THE ELIMINATOR: Daryn Pittman wins Elimination Showdown at Cedar Lake
Kerry Madsen and David Gravel each set Quick Time for Independence Day Spectacular weekend
NEW RICHMOND, WI – July 2, 2020 – Daryn Pittman outlasted three rounds of elimination in a special Feature Thursday night at Cedar Lake Speedway to earn his first win at the Wisconsin track during the Independence Day Spectacular weekend.
For the first time, the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series ran a special $3,000-to-win 23-lap Elimination Showdown at the 3/8-mile track, after running two qualifying sessions for Friday and Saturday’s programs.
In a field of 20 cars, four were eliminated every five laps until there were eight left. The final eight cars ran an eight-lap dash to determine the winner. Pittman dominated the event, leading every lap from the pole and held off a late attack by 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz.
“It’s just something totally different from what we’re used to putting on,” said Pittman, of Owasso, OK. “Obviously, just glad to be out here racing this weekend with full capacity crowd. Thanks to the fans for coming out tonight and watching us time trial and hopefully they enjoyed that. From my seat, it was fun.”
The day started with participants and the large crowd of fans entering through state-of-the-art COVID-19 screenings, which will be in place all weekend. Then two qualifying sessions for Friday and Saturday’s race programs were held. Kerry Madsen set Quick Time for Friday’s race with an 11.243 sec. lap and David Gravel set Quick Time for Saturday’s event with an 11.690 sec. lap – his fourth Quick Time award of 2020. Pittman qualified 12th for Friday and ninth for Saturday.
Friday’s qualifying session set the lineup for the Elimination Showdown with the top 16 locking into the race. With a 12-car invert, Pittman, who qualified 12th for Friday’s program, was awarded the pole position. The top four cars in the Last Chance Showdown rounded out the 20-car field.
Dominic Scelzi, Jake Blackhurst, Mason Daniel and Shane Stewart were eliminated after the first five laps. Scotty Thiel, Ian Madsen, Bill Balog and Logan Schuchart were the next four to be eliminated. And then Tim Kaeding, Kraig Kiner, Parker Price-Miller and Brad Sweet were the final four to be eliminated.
Pittman, Schatz, Sheldon Haudenschild, Carson Macedo, David Gravel, Kerry Madsen, Jacob Allen and Paul Nienhiser lined up for the final eight lap dash.
Like the restarts before, Pittman gapped second-place Schatz by about half a straightaway and was on cruise control to the win. However, with two laps to go, Nienhiser brought out a caution due to a flat right rear tire.
When the race went back green, Schatz made Pittman work for the win. He dove underneath Pittman going into the first corner and slid in front of him exiting Turn 2. His last-ditch effort to steal the win faded a few seconds later when Pittman utilized the momentum built around the top of the track to dart back by Schatz down the backstretch. Pittman went on to win his first race of 2020 with Schatz second and Haudenschild third.
While the race wasn’t for points and doesn’t count as an official World of Outlaws win, Pittman was still happy to get extra seat time in preparation for the $20,000-to-win Features on Friday and Saturday.
“Truthfully, I was really just happy to get extra track time here,” Pittman said. “This historically hasn’t been one of my best racetracks. I love coming here. I run good at places a lot like it but never had a lot of success here. We definitely got better. Obviously, our starting position made a huge difference. My Roth Motorsports guys have been working hard. We just keeping making changes and improvements to our 83 car and we’re getting better (after two podium runs at the Jackson Nationals, as well).”

WINDOM GUNS IT FOR 2ND CAREER HULMAN CLASSIC TRIUMPH

Terre Haute, Indiana (July 1, 2020).........Nine years after first holding the coveted rifle as a first-time Tony Hulman Classic winner, Chris Windom joined the ranks of multi-time winners of the event following his wire-to-wire performance Wednesday night at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track in the 50th running of the race.
The 2011 Hulman Classic winner from Canton, Ill. became the 12th different driver to score multiple feature wins in the event, joining the likes of Dave Darland, J.J. Yeley, Jack Hewitt, Jerry Coons, Jr, Jon Stanbrough, Pancho Carter, Rich Vogler, Robert Ballou and Steve Butler, and just one shy of three-time winners Cary Faas and Levi Jones.
"This is the coolest race to win at Terre Haute. It's one I've been gunning for every year," Windom said following his 26th career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory, tying him for 18th all-time alongside Tyler Courtney, Tony Elliott and Dave Steele. "It's been a few years since we've won it. This car's been so good all year, I feel like we should've had a few wins already but that's racing. It's so tough right now in this series, it's so tough to get these."
Windom rolled off from the pole position for the 30-lap main event in his Hayward Motorsports/NOS Energy Drink - OilFire - B & H Contractors/DRC/Claxton Mopar, breaking away solo on the bottom at the drop of the green as the rest of the field jostled for position two-wide, high and low, behind him.
In the early stages, it was and would remain a two-horse race throughout the majority of the feature as Windom led a two-car breakaway from the rest of the pack with Brady Bacon, who started 6th. Earlier in the night, Bacon recorded his 35th career Fatheadz Fast Qualifying time, equaling him with Rich Vogler for 7th all-time. It was also Bacon's 3rd career Tony Hulman Classic fast qualifying effort, joining Vogler atop the all-time list in that category for the event.
The pair, who got together in an early-race collision in the most recent series race last weekend at Plymouth (Ind.) Speedway that sent Bacon flipping, remained glued together as the two raced through lapped traffic just past the halfway mark of the race. Windom led the charge with Bacon lying in the weeds waiting for a chance to pounce on any hiccup suffered by Windom, who knew full well he couldn't hold back and had to be the aggressor, or thus be the proverbial gazelle being chased down by the lion.
"At this place, you can lose so much time if you come off your line and have to mess with lapped cars for very long," Windom explained. "I knew that if I had a shot, I had to take it. I probably crowded a few of them, but you've got to be aggressive here and you've got to do what you've got to do to get through them. If you don't, the guy in second's got a better vantage point than you do because he can go the opposite way you go."
First, in turn one on the 18th lap, Windom followed Dustin Smith high into turn one, forcing Windom to breathe the throttle and cut back underneath as Bacon ate up some time on the interval. Then, with 10 to go after regathering himself, Windom exited turn four with both Mitchell Davis and Brandon Morin running side-by-side at the tail end of the lead lap. Windom didn't wait, instead splitting right between the 7/10 of Davis and Morin at the start/finish line to gain some much needed air away from Bacon for the time being.
"I felt like we got through lapped traffic pretty good," Windom recalled. "I felt like the pace I was running up top was good enough that no one was at least going to drive by us on the bottom, especially the second half of the race. I was just trying to get good restarts with all those cautions at the end and avoid getting a slider into one.
Restarts came into play on multiple occasions down the stretch, first after Davis slowed to a stop on the 26th lap, bringing an end to Windom's 1.379 second lead over Bacon. On the ensuing restart, the action didn't resume for much longer when 4th running Tanner Thorson slowed dramatically with a flat right rear tire between turns three and four. As the field scattered to avoid contact, 11th running Nick Bilbee ramped over Thorson's left side wheels and flipped once over in turn four. Bilbee was okay. Thorson restarted with new rubber and drove back to a 6th place finish in the final rundown.
Once racing resumed with one more lap of green under the belt, turmoil found C.J. Leary once again on this evening as he stopped at the top of turn four after charging from 22nd to 9th. Earlier in the night, the defending USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champion and his team were forced to swap engines after suffering from mechanical problems in hot laps.
Moments later, under yellow, second running Bacon stopped in turn one when the engine inexplicably stopped running. There was still fuel in the tank with four laps remaining but no luck left for Bacon, the two-time series champ who was aiming for a first career Hulman Classic triumph.
That slotted Justin Grant, winner of three of the last four series races in 2020 and the winner of the most recent series race at the Terre Haute half-mile in September of 2019, into second behind Windom. The patented late-race turn one slider is a fixture at Terre Haute and Windom was prepared to expect that coming, but he also had a plan.

"I felt like if I restarted on the top, it would kind of throw them off a little bit," Windom revealed. "This place is notorious to get a turn one slide job thrown on you, especially when you're leading, so you've got to get a good restart here. Luckily, I was able to do that."
Picking up the throttle midway through turns three and four on the topside, Windom instantly gapped Grant and, nearing the race's end, had established a half-straightaway advantage over Grant that he never relented, collecting his first USAC AMOSIL National Sprint car feature victory of the season and first for Hayward Motorsports since joining the team during the latest offseason.
Windom's victory was his sixth in USAC national competition at the Terre Haute Action Track (five sprint, one Silver Crown), which makes him the sixth winningest driver at the track behind Vogler (13), Jack Hewitt & Gary Bettenhausen (10), J.J. Yeley & Bubby Jones (7) and tied with Levi Jones & Sheldon Kinser (6).
Windom was followed to the checkered flag by series point leader Grant, 2.399 seconds behind at the finish, with 2019 Hulman Classic winner Chase Stockon in 3rd, 2017 USAC West Coast Sprint Car champion Jake Swanson in 4th and B & W Auto Mart/KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Carson Short in 5th after starting 14th.

KYLE LARSON MAKES THE MOVE ON FREDDIE RAHMER TO WIN THE HODNETT CUP AND POCKET $10,000, RYAN WATT TOPS MODIFIEDS
BECHTELSVILLE, PA (June 30, 2020) – A late race slider led Elks Grove, California’s Kyle Larson to a $10,000 win in the Pennsylvania 410 Sprint Car Speed Week event presented by Red Robin. Ryan Watt of Boyertown, PA picked up the NASCAR 358 Modified victory and $3,000 at Grandview Speedway on Tuesday Night, as part of the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series. With scattered showers over Grandview Speedway from noon to 7 PM the track crew and staff of Thunder on the Hill was determined to get this event in the books, and they did. The win also earned Kyle Larson his place on the Greg Hodnett Cup and perpetual trophy. Hodnett, a six time Thunder Champion and nine time Thunder on the Hill feature winner was remembered Tuesday night after losing his life in a racing accident in 2018.
In the 410 Sprint Cars, Larson overtook Freddie Rahmer to win was his third Grandview win in four years after scoring the 2017 and 2018 editions of the Speed Week event.
“Freddie (Rahmer) set such a good pace on the restarts, I’m surprised I could stay with him,” Larson said while celebrating his big payday. “At times we were good, it’s great to get a win.”
NASCAR Cup Series competitor, Christopher Bell set Fast Time and by the luck of the draw started on the pole of the 35-lap A-Main event. At the drop of the green flag, Bell pulled away to about a straightaway lead over Freddie Rahmer setting the pace for the first five circuits around the the one-third mile, Grandview high banks.
Bell’s night would come to an end quickly, after Kyle Reinhardt slowed collecting the leader, and handing the lead to Freddie Rahmer.
Rahmer hit lapped traffic on the 11th trip around the track, but that didn’t faze him, he switched lanes sliding passed cars, while Larson had his hands full battling Sammy Swindell for second position.
Larson would move into second on the 20th lap, and closed on Rahmer in lapped traffic.
A late race restart opened the door and Larson pulled a slide job on Rahmer, pulling away for the victory and the Greg Hodnett Memorial Cup.
Rahmer finished in second and Sammy Swindell rounded out the podium. Ryan Smith finished in fourth and Danny Dietrich completed the top five finishers.
There was no cruise control on the way to victory for Ryan Watt in the NASCAR 358 Modified feature event. Kevin Hirthler led the field to the green flag running side-by-side with Watt for the first 6 laps before Watt’s No. 14W machine could complete the pass.
The top five ran nose-to-tail with Watt leading the way followed by Hirthler, Craig VonDohren, Jeff Strunk and Brett Kressley. Kressley tangled with a lapped car, bringing out the first yellow flag of the night.
On the restart, the top-5 used every inch of the Grandview Speedway battling it out, with Strunk claiming the second spot.

JACKSON BLOCKBUSTER: Logan Schuchart claims first AGCO Jackson Nationals title
The Pennsylvanian wins his first crown jewel event in a barn burner Feature with seven lead changes
JACKSON, MN – June 27, 2020 – Crown jewels dangled in front of Logan Schuchart throughout 2019 but were never close enough for him to grab.
He finished second in the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway and then finished second at the Knoxville Nationals.
On Saturday night at the Jackson Motorplex, Schuchart fended off an assault of slide jobs and dive bombs throughout the 35-lap Feature to finally grab a crown jewel. He claimed the 42nd Annual Jackson Nationals title and the $30,000 prize that came with it.
“It’s awesome,” Schuchart said about winning the AGCO Jackson Nationals. “We’ve been so close to a couple of them (crown jewel events). It’s a huge win. Great for our team, without even thinking about the money. To win a race like this at a great facility with all of these great names here. To be able to win during these trying times in 2020 with everything that’s going on and to get a big win is great for our team.”
The win is his fourth of the season – second in a row at the 4/10-mile track – and 20th career World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win.
The Hanover, PA driver entered the night as the points leader with his Shark Racing team for the event after a fourth-place finish and a win in the preliminary races.
He finished second in the DIRTVision Fast Pass King of the Hill Dash behind winner Daryn Pittman, placing them on the front row of the 35-lap Feature.
Schuchart darted ahead of Pittman at the start of the Feature, bringing two-time and defending Jackson Nationals champion Brad Sweet and Sheldon Haudenschild along with him. The next 30 laps became a summer blockbuster worthy of an Oscar nomination.
The lead officially changed hand six times throughout the event – not counting every time Schuchart, Sweet and Haudenschild swapped the lead before crossing the finish line. Haudenschild stole the lead from Schuchart in lap traffic on Lap 10. However, a red flag for Parker Price-Miller’s flip in Turn 1 put Haudenschild and Schuchart side by side on the restart.
Unwilling to lose another crown jewel event, Schuchart timed the restart perfect and powered his way around the outside of Haudenschild to reclaim the lead. But Haudenschild, who is winless this year, was just as hungry for the victory. He charged his way back around Schuchart the next lap.
Their duel of the fates was not yet over. Schuchart threw a slide job on Haudenschild going into Turn 1 and reclaimed the lead on Lap Lap 13. And this time, he was able to pull away, running the high line. Haudenschild fell victim to Sweet, as well.
With Schuchart in the lead, Sweet second and Haudenschild third, the three drivers ran single file around the top of the track for about the next 10 laps.
Once the Feature was under 10 laps to go and Schuchart again caught slower traffic, Sweet and Haudenschild closed in.
Like fighter jets playing war games, seeing how close they can dive around each other without touching, the three drivers swapped lanes every corner to try and get an advantage on the other. Haudenschild and Sweet almost made contact exiting Turn 4, forcing Haudenschild over the cushion with eight laps to go. He faded to the clutches of Pittman, while Sweet went after Schuchart.
“The Big Cat” pounced on Schuchart and edged him for the lead on Lap 29, but Schuchart dove into Turn 1 and slid ahead of Sweet for the final time. With tires wearing down, the reigning Series champion had nothing more for Schuchart. The Drydene #1S drove away with one of the biggest wins in his career.
“It’s tough when you get guys like that, that are so good,” Schuchart said about having to race Sweet and Haudenschild for the win. “Sheldon is going to pound the top down and take his shots. He can pull a slider from way far away. And I knew Brad was going to be coming at the end. You just have to keep your composure with those guys. You just have to hit your marks and not get overly excited.”
Sweet finished on the podium all three nights of the 2020 AGCO Jackson Nationals, including a win on the first night. However, he had to settle for another runner-up finish with his Kasey Kahne Racing team.
“I went really hard there in the middle of the race and kind of used my one shot to get by Logan and didn’t make it stick,” said Sweet, of Grass Valley, CA. “He did a good job. I think he was able to set a nice pace out front and able to save his tires, while I tried to stay close.
“There’s some nights you just can’t get it done. NAPA Auto Parts guys gave me a good car. We’re working hard. It’s competitive out here right now. We’ll take a second and try to get better next week.”
Pittman was able to get around Haudenschild to finish third – his second podium finish in a row.
“We just got some work to do and got beat by, arguably, the two best cars on the tour this year,” said Pittman, of Owasso, OK. “We’re making gains.”
Haudenschild finsihed fourth in his NOS Energy Drink Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing car – his ninth top-10 finish in a row this year. David Gravel rounded out the top-five.
Ten-time Series champion and 2018 Jackson Nationals champion Donny Schatz ended the night eighth – his second top-10 finish in a row with his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team after four straight races outside the top-10.
Carson Macedo earned the KSE Racing Hard Charger award in his Kyle Larson Racing #2 car with his run from 18th to ninth. He’s now tied with Schuchart for the second most top-10 finishes, so far, this season with 14.
Now, with a crown jewel win under his beat, Schuchart said it only gives he and his team more confidence going forward this year.

Aaron Reutzel tracks down Cory Eliason to score Volunteer Speedway victory
BULLS GAP, Tenn. (June 27, 2020) - It took fifth-starting Aaron Reutzel 23 circuits to track down Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 championship rival Cory Eliason, but once the Clute, Texas-native secured the top spot on lap 24, the Texas Sprint Car Nationals main event on the highbanks of Volunteer Speedway was as good as complete. Although forced to endure a green-white-checkered finish, Reutzel’s dominance was clear, eventually escaping to a two-second advantage in just two trips around the speedway.
A sweet ending to a bitter night for the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports team, Reutzel was forced to change motors after his respective hot lap session, only to be caught-up in an incident during the evening’s dash. The familiar No. 87 did restart the dash, but had to settle with a fifth-place result.
The $5,000 triumph, a first-ever for Reutzel at Volunteer and a first-ever as a full-time All Star in the state of Tennessee, bumped Reutzel’s 2020 win tally to six during All Star Circuit of Champions competition, continuing his chase toward a third consecutive Series title.
Eliason, who led the first 23 laps before losing the top spot to Reutzel, held on to finish second at Volunteer on Saturday night, followed by Nashville’s Paul McMahan and three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Tony Stewart.
“Everyone always talks about how good their team is, but I have the best team in the pit area. This was definitely a tough night,” Aaron Reutzel boasted in Volunteer Speedway victory lane, backed by Folkens Brothers Trucking, Fischer Body Shop, Ti22, and Hollywood Blasting. “We had to do so much tonight, but they never gave up and continued to work hard no matter what was thrown at them. They proved why we won the championship the last two years. My team won this race tonight.”
Utilizing the outside-front row starting spot, Visalia, California’s Cory Eliason jumped to the early advantage, quickly driving away from Paul McMahan, Sye Lynch and Tony Stewart. In fact, Eliason’s only challenge during the first 15 laps of the 30-lap contest was in the form of lapped traffic, which came into play for the first time on lap nine. At the time, Reutzel was battling in the fifth position, eventually earning a spot over Stewart to claim fourth on lap 13. Two circuits later, Reutzel was on the move again, this time working by the Pete Grove-owned entry occupied by Sye Lynch.
Working the very topside of turns one and two, and sneaking through the middle and very bottom of turns three and four, Reutzel powered his way around McMahan to take second on lap 20, this time using a slide job between turns one and two to secure the position.
Despite Eliason’s attempt to escape in traffic, Reutzel’s momentum was too powerful to overcome, as the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports entry cut the near-straightaway lead to less than a car length by lap 22. One circuit later, Reutzel made his first bid for the lead, and although the slider did not stick, a slider the following lap would, driving by Eliason at the exit of turn two on lap 24.
The main event’s first and only caution appeared on lap 29 forcing the aforementioned green-white-checkered finish.
“You could only drive into the corner so hard above the cushion because you would just slide to the fence,” Reutzel continued. “There was only one piece of moisture in that whole corner and that was right along the bottom. When I went in and turned down, I could get a good run down the front stretch. I just kept digging at it and digging at it and I was able to make up some time on people. We were able to track down (Eliason) without a caution and that’s just a statement of how good we were.”
“We were good in one and two, but we struggled in three and four. That’s where Aaron (Reutzel) beat us,” Cory Eliason said, driver of Rudeen Racing No. 26. “He was able to carry momentum a lot better than I could. We are getting a lot closer to where we need to be. This kinda happened to me in Australia where I finished on the podium twelve or so times in a row before I finally won one. Sometimes finishing second can get frustrating. Hats off to my team. We were fast all night.”
As an added bonus for Reutzel, his feature performance also secured the evening’s Hercules Tires Hard Charger Award.

Flat Left Front Not Enough To Stop Hafertepe At I-30 Speedway With Lucas Oil ASCS

(June 27, 2020) Even with a flat left front tire over the final four laps on Saturday's SawBlade.com A-Feature, it was not enough to slow Sam Hafertepe, Jr. as the driver of the Hills Racing/Heidbreder Foundation No. 15h led start to finish with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network at I-30 Speedway.

"I just got a little too greedy," chuckled Hafertepe over the flat front tire. "I did that with about four laps to go, and I just started being careful, so it didn't dig in."
Hafertepe's third career victory with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network at the Arkansas quarter-mile, the win is Sam's 50th overall with the National Tour since 2010.
Fending off numerous restart attempts at the lead by Mississippi's Dale Howard, the No. 15h used the final 15 lap green flag run to stretch his advantage to 2.747 seconds. Battling with Roger Crockett over the last half of the Feature, the pair went side by side several times as Howard held off the No. 11. Blake Hahn grabbed third on Lap 26 after Dale and Roger nearly made contact. Blake was able to hold on to complete the night's podium after starting seventh on the grid. Roger Crockett ended up fourth with Jordan Mallett, from 11th, taking the fifth position on the closing lap.
Moving up six positions, Missouri's Garet Williamson ended up sixth with Cody Gardner seventh. Having to race through the first BMRS B-Feature, after being disqualified during his Qualifier for rough driving, Howard Moore rebounded to eighth after starting 19th. Having fallen out the top ten late in the A-Feature, Matt Covington came back to finish ninth with Chase Randall posting his first top ten of the season against the National Tour.
The 76th event at I-30 Speedway since 1993 with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network; the Saturday showdown drew a field of 42 drivers from 10 states and three countries. SCE Gaskets Heat Races were topped by John Carney II, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Brad Bowden, Howard Moore, and Zach Pringle. Hoosier Tire Qualifiers went to Justin Sanders, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., and Roger Crockett. A pair of BMRS B-Features were topped by Tim Crawley and Dylan Westbrook. Provisional were utilized by Harli White and Robbie Price based on National Tour Owner Points. A Regional Provisional was used by Joseph Miller.
The next event for the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network is slated for Saturday, July 11 at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark. Live coverage is available for those who cannot make the trip on www.racinboys.com.
