ATTICA, Ohio - Tim Shaffer, a hall of fame sprint car driver certainly has the resume that would draw the attention of any owner. But, sprint car owners are scarce so Tim Shaffer got on the phone and a former ride was available - with Bryan Grove. It has paid off so far in 2020 as Shaffer earned his 18th career 410 win at Attica Raceway Park Friday, June 19 on Craig Miller Trucking/Erie Blacktop/Bucyrus Road Materials Night.
"It's pretty awesome. Hats off to Bryan Grove and the boys helping us. We had a blast together before it was just short on money...we used a lot of used tires. This time we're doing it right. We changed bars and stuff before the feature...we're here to learn and the only way you're going to learn is if you change things up and take chances and it paid off tonight," said Shaffer beside his Canton Erectors, Kinards Lounge backed #28.
Whitehouse, Ohio's Matt Miller didn't race for the past year and half and it took him only a few laps to knock the rust off but it all came back and he drove the Rick DeLong late model to his 9th career Attica victory.
"We haven't raced in like a year and a half so it took a little bit to knock the rust off. I can't thank Rick DeLong enough....he does this all out of his own pocket. There's nothing on the sides of this car. I was committed to the bottom. The sprint car guys built that ledge up there and it was treacherous. I saw Markham (Ryan) up there and it made me a little bit nervous but I just hit my marks and it worked out," said Miller.
Fremont, Ohio's Paul Weaver held off mid race challenges from Brandon Moore and a late race charge from Kyle Peters to score his 50th career 305 sprint victory at "Ohio's Finest Racing" speedplant.
"Fifty more wins would be nice but I'm not Art Ball," joked Weaver. "I was having fun and then I saw them racing underneath me I figured I have to race around the tires. If I had seen the 26 car (Jamie Miller) behind me I would have had to move up," said Weaver beside his B&B Drain Service, Hampshire Racing Engines, M&L Excavating, Seagate Sandblasting, Weaver Performance backed machine.
Cale Conley and Shaffer brought the field to green for the 30-lap Callie's Performance Products 410 Sprint feature with Conley gaining the advantage over Shaffer, Trey Jacobs, Craig Mintz, Lee Jacobs and last week's winner Cap Henry. With six laps scored Shaffer began to make his move, closing on Conley as they prepared to race into heavy lapped traffic. Meanwhile Henry had moved into third and was also reeling in the top two.
Henry took second on lap 10 but Shaffer and Jacobs continued to hound him as Conley led but a narrow margin. Shaffer used lapped traffic to regain second on lap 12 and just began to pressure Conley when the caution flew on the restart Shaffer drove under the leader to take the top spot while Jacobs grabbed third. Shaffer began to pull away as Conley, Jacobs and Henry waged an entertaining battle for the runner-up spot.
Traffic again came into play with 10 laps to go and Craig Mintz had found something on the top of the track and and took third two circuits later. Another caution wiped out a substantial lead for Shaffer with seven laps to go. Shaffer hit his marks perfectly on the restart and continued to lead with Henry and Mintz in tow. The final caution flew on lap 25 and once again Shaffer rocked away on the restart with Henry and Mintz battling hard for second.
Shaffer drove away for the win with Mintz holding off Henry for second. Jacobs and Byron Reed (up from 15th) rounding out the top five.The victory was worth an extra $500 thanks to Gill Construction and CK Plumbing.
Tim Sabo and Devin Shiels brought the field to green for the 25 lap Propane.com/Dirt Nerds Podcast DIRTcar late model A-main. Sabo led the first lap but Shiels, a former Attica track champion, grabbed the top spot a lap later while last week's winner Ryan Markham and Miller battled hard for third. Miller drove into second on lap three and applied pressure to Shiels and made the pass for the lead but a caution flew handing the top spot back to Shiels.
When the green flew with 19 laps to go Miller drove under Shiels to take the lead. A rash of cautions the first half of the race kept the field close. Miller pulled away slightly in the lead while a very intense battle took place for second involving Shiels, Matt Irey, Markham and Sabo. Irey took the runner-up spot with 10 laps to go but Shiels would not give up continuing to race side by side. Miller was able to maintain his smooth corners and drove away to the win over Irey, Shiels, Sabo and Jon Henry.
Weaver and Brandon Moore comprised the front row of the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints A-main and when the green dropped Weaver took the lead over Moore, Kyle Peters, Steve Rando, Kyle Capodice, Kody Brewer and Jamie Miller. Weaver quickly began to pull away but a caution on lap five wiped that big lead away. On the restart Moore pressured Weaver with Peters, Capodice and Miller staying within striking distance.
Heavy lapped traffic was about to come into play when the caution flew just as Moore was making his bid for the lead. On the restart Weaver hit his marks perfectly and pulled away while Moore now had to contend with Peters. Following a caution with six laps to go, Weaver continued to lead but Peters drove into second over Moore and a closing Jamie Miller. Peters utilized the extreme high line and caught weaver with five laps to go but contact with front stretch wall with two circuits left slowed his momentum and Weaver drove to the victory over Peters, Miller, Moore and Seth Schneider who had charged from his 18th starting spot.
Attica Raceway Park will kick off the 2020 All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series Presented by the Baumann Auto Group for the 410 sprints vying for $4,000 to win along with the opener for the Napa Auto Parts of Bryan AFCS Presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales 305 Sprints battling for $1,000 to win thanks to Gressman Powersports. It will also be the first race of the Attica-Oakshade Raceway Challenge Series for the late models paying $1,200 to win.

ASCS National Sprint Series
Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour Restarting 2020 Season At Caney Valley and I-30 Speedway
Bryan Hulbert – TULSA, Okla. (June 18, 2020) With venues opening and ASCS Officials able to work with tracks across the country, the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network is set to roar back to life on Thursday, June 25, 2020, at Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kan.
The first time back at the Kansas quarter-mile since June 21, 1993, during Speedweek, the win went to Terry Gray.
Presented by Terry Mattox Promotions, the event is co-sanctioned with the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region presented by Smiley’s Racing Products and includes Factory Stocks and Stock Cars. The Thursday showdown will include a Fireworks Show after the races.
The first of a two-part weekend, the series will see action on Saturday, June 27 at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark. The 76th National Tour event at “Hammer Hill”, the last visit on May 12, 2018, went to Sam Hafertepe, Jr.
Going into the two-race affair, Oklahoma’s Harli White leads the way over Sam Hafertepe, Jr. by 14 markers with Roger Crockett, Blake Hahn, and Matt Covington all within 37 points of the lead. California’s Tanner Carrick holds sixth with Jordon Mallett, Scott Bogucki, Dylan Westbrook, and Blake Carrick completing the top ten in tour standings.
Thursday, June 25 at Caney Valley Speedway opens at 5:00 P.M. with racing getting underway at 8:00 P.M. (CT). Admission is $20 for adults and Kids 12 and under get into the grandstand for free. Caney Valley Speedway is located at CR 1300 in Caney, Kan.

Opening at 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 27, the action at I-30 Speedway is slated to begin at 7:30 P.M. (CT) and includes IMCA Modifieds, Dixon Road U-Pull-It Factory Stocks, NOW600 Micros, and, Mod-Lites. The event is co-sanctioned with the ASCS Mid-South Region. Admission is $20 for adults with Kids 12 and under free thanks to Camron's Upholstery. I-30 Speedway is located on the I-30 Frontage Road, eastbound at Exit 126.

$10,000 TO WIN 410 SPRINT SPEED WEEK HODNETT CUP UP FOR GRABS, 358 MODIFIEDS ON DOUBLE HEADER TUESDAY NIGHT, JUNE 30 AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
The powerful roar of the 410 Sprints will return to the Hill on Tuesday night, June 30 when the Pennsylvania Sprint Speed Week Series joins the 358 NASCAR Modifieds in this always thrilling double header at the Grandview Speedway. This will mark the opening event of the 2020 NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series and $10,000 will go to the winner of the 35 lap 410 Sprint Hodnett Cup. This event is dedicated to the memory of former Thunder on the Hill Champion Greg Hodnett, who lost his life in a racing accident in 2018. The Hodnett Cup is a trophy that belonged to Greg Hodnett and will now carry the name of every winner of the Hodnett Cup. Joining the high powered 410 Sprints will be the always exciting 358 NASCAR Modifieds taking part in a series of qualifying events leading up to the $3,000 to win 30 lap feature. Gates open at 5 PM with race time set for 7:30 PM.
Event sheets and payoff details for both the 410 Sprints and 358 Modifieds are posted on the website at www.thunderonthehillracingseries.com. Grandstand admission for this event is $30 for adults, $10 for children 6 to 11 and kids five and under will be admitted for free. The Pit fee is $40 and a license is not required.
Advance tickets for this event are available by calling 443-513-4456. Please speak clearly, provide you first and last name and the number of tickets you need. There is no need to leave your phone number. Tickets may be paid for and picked up on race night at the Will Call Window after 4:30 PM. With advance tickets, you may enter the grandstands immediately after receiving your tickets. We do ask that you please bring exact change. General admission tickets will go on sale at 5 PM.
The Thunder Series will continue on Tuesday night, August 4 when the USAC National Midgets invade the Hill for the 2nd Annual Ken Brenn Midget Masters also joined by the 358 NASCAR Modifieds with action getting underway at 7:30 PM. On Thursday night, August 27, Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions 410 sprints will bring the party to the Hill with the 358 NASCAR Modifieds being part of this double header on Levan Machine & Truck Night at Grandview.
The Thunder Series will close out 2020 with the Annual October Halloween event on Saturday night, October 17 with the Trick or Treat Triple 20’s for 358 Modifieds joined by the Sportsman with a 6 PM starting time.

UNSTOPPABLE LARSON WINS PARAGON INDIANA MIDGET WEEK OPENER

Paragon, Indiana (June 16, 2020).........When you're hot, you're hot, and Kyle Larson is absolutely untouchable at the moment.
Larson (Elk Grove, Calif.) won Tuesday's opening round of the 16th annual Indiana Midget Week at Paragon Speedway with a late-race pass of Tanner Thorson four laps from the finish to claim his sixth consecutive win behind the wheel between World of Outlaws, All Star and USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget competition over the past couple of weeks.
The victory also marked Larson's sixth-straight victory when competing in a midget inside the United States, with victories in the final three USAC National Midget features to conclude the 2019 season in California at Placerville, Bakersfield and Ventura. He then promptly won his first two starts of 2020 in January with a prelim win and a final night triumph at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Okla.
Larson's sixth career Indiana Midget Week win, which ranks second all-time behind Bryan Clauson's nine, was also the 20th of his USAC National Midget career, tying him with A.J. Foyt for 32nd all-time. And it came in the first USAC National Midget race held at Paragon since 1985.
Prior to Tuesday night, only once had Larson visited Paragon Speedway. That occasion came as a spectator of a sprint car race at the 3/8-mile several years ago.
"I've been waiting a long to come here to Paragon to get my chance to race," Larson said. "I'm glad I could add my name to the winner's list here."
In Fatheadz Eyewear qualifying, Larson laid down a new one-lap track record for the series at Paragon in his Tucker-Boat Motorsports/Pristine Auction - K & C Drywall/Spike/Speedway-powered machine, setting the new mark of 14.813 seconds and shattering the former record held by seven-time USAC National Midget champ Mel Kenyon for three-and-a-half decades at 16.442.
That placed Larson in the third row for the 30-lap feature while pole sitter Gio Scelzi, the last driver to beat Larson head-to-head in a USAC Midget race, jut out to an early five-car length lead in the beginning stages over outside front row starter Thorson.
Thorson closed the gap on Scelzi, and on lap six, made his first attempted slider for the lead in turn one, to no avail. The move ultimately cost Thorson substantial ground in the immediate aftermath, dropping him back 10 lengths before regrouping and incrementally began to reel Scelzi back in.
On the 11th lap, Thorson hit the slide to perfection on his second shot, slinging past Scelzi to take over the race lead.
One lap later, USAC western standout Chase Johnson flipped off the turn two banking in his first series start of the year. He walked away without injury.
One lap into the ensuing restart, now third-running Larson put Scelzi on notice with a slider on both ends of the racetrack, in both turn one and three. Each time, however, Scelzi masterfully cut back under to retain the position while Thorson opened up his advantage at the head of the field.
A yellow on lap 14 for a Brady Bacon turn two spin reset the deck, and on the following lap, Larson stuck the slider in turn one to corral the second position from Scelzi. At that point - the halfway mark - Thorson's advantage was 1.1 second, but that margin dwindled with each tick of the clock down to half a second when third-running Scelzi met his race's demise when he flipped in turn two, emerging uninjured.

With just nine to go, leader Thorson went on the defensive, sliding himself into turn one, thus trying to prevent Larson from doing the job himself. But Larson stuck to his instincts and went even lower than Thorson in turn one and the two made very slight contact as they drifted in unison to the top of turn two.
The pair kept each other in check, and with six to go, Larson took another run at Thorson in turn one, diving to the bottom and sliding up in front of Thorson by the time the two reached the second turn. Thorson ducked underneath and there, Thorson's right rear wheel and Larson's left front wheel had a meeting of the minds, knocking Larson askew and allowing Thorson to open his lead back up to 10 car lengths.
It took but just one lap before Larson was right back on Thorson's tail tank, following the 2016 series champ for a full circuit before changing up his approach.
There, Larson utilized a line which he had found just a few laps earlier as he drove it in a bit over the turn one cushion, then drove downhill off the banking and met wheel-to-wheel with Thorson exiting turn two, likewise leaving Thorson little room off the corner as they made slight contact similar to what had transpired just two laps prior with the roles now reversed.
From there, Larson quest for victory was undisputedly undenied as he extended the interval to 1.696 seconds over Thorson at the checkered to win his first Indiana Midget Week event since the 2018 opener at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Thorson finished second ahead of NASCAR Cup Series regular Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Chris Windom with Justin Grant rounding out the top-five.
"That was a fun race there," Larson exclaimed. "(Turns) one and two were a lot of fun, throwing slide jobs like that and getting to race hard with a lot of my friends was cool. My car just kept getting better and better throughout the race, especially there at the end when it got a little bit of patchiness of rubber at the exit of both ends. I happened to open my entry there on the last restart in one and could make up a lot of time on Tanner there. I threw a slider on him with four or five laps to go, and he didn't leave me much room, so when I got my opportunity, I didn't leave him any at all either."

IT'S A FIRST-TIME USAC SPRINT WINNER AT TRI-STATE!

Haubstadt, Indiana (June 14, 2020).........Stephen Schnapf knew he had the speed at Tri-State Speedway. He just had to finish that final third.
After last year's oh-so-close second-place finish in midsummer to Kyle Cummins in which Schnapf led all but the final four laps, the Evansville, Ind. native felt a victory on the big stage was just within reach, but just needed to close it out Mariano Rivera style.
"I knew last year we were fast," Schnapf remembered. "I knew we were able to get out and roll early, but Cummins got us every time last year. That last third of the race, he'd always be quicker and was able to get around us and we just couldn't quite hang on."
Sunday night, Schnapf finally found that final third to finish off his first career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory in the Midwest Sprint Car Series co-sanctioned "Showdown" at Haubstadt, Indiana's Tri-State Speedway, a monumental victory for the 31-year-old just one day shy of his 32nd birthday.
"This is like 22 or 23 years I've been racing now," Schnapf recalled. "We've won local championships, state championships, and have run well. I've been close to a feature win on the national level and this is honestly, truly, my first ever national feature win in any type of race car. It's taken so many years to finally get it, and I've had so many great people behind me over those years, and things just weren't quite able to work out. Finally, tonight, the stars just lined up for me. Tonight, it was kind of destiny, and it was going to be hard to be beaten."
Right from the get go, Schnapf was on point. Despite Schnapf starting from the pole, Cummins, who swept all nine Sprint Car feature victories in USAC and MSCS competition at the ¼-mile dirt oval track in 2019, was the odds-on favorite from the third starting spot and was already challenging Schnapf for the lead at the conclusion of lap one.
Schnapf withstood Cummins' challenge and burst off the top of turn four to beat Cummins to the line and, from there, extended his lead lap-after-lap, eventually carving out a half-straightaway lead in the first half of the 30-lapper.
As Schnapf fenagled his way through the back half of the field, Cummins began to reel him in, shaving a second off Schnapf's 1.6 second lead. On the 20th lap, Schnapf encountered Max Adams, attempting to put him a lap down, but Schnapf was caught up just enough to nearly allow Cummins to take full advantage of the door he left open underneath.
However, Schnapf secured his grasp, denying what ultimately became Cummins' last shot. Leading USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Rookie Anton Hernandez slowed moments later to bring out the caution, thus putting the intensity of traffic and the immediate pressure of Cummins' presence off Schnapf for the time being.
With that said, Schnapf was in a rhythm, and some drivers loathe the thought of restarts. Not so much for Schnapf, who considered it a blessing in a way with how well he could launch each time he saw the green.
Cummins was able to stay within a couple car lengths of Schnapf in the ensuing laps following the last restart, which started the final, crucial third of the race, but Cummins wasn't quite able to get a run. With six to go, however, any thought of Cummins making a run at a 10th consecutive Tri-State victory vanished.
Cummins was disposed of by Donny Brackett for second off turn four on the 24th lap, then a half-lap later, was overtaken for third by Robert Ballou. Suddenly, it was apparent something was amiss as Cummins slowed dramatically and pulled into the infield with an engine issue, ending his astounding winning streak with a 22nd place finish.
With the victory, Schnapf became the initial first-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature winner of 2020, and the first since Logan Seavey at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway in August of 2019. Schnapf stretched his lead out over Brackett and Ballou and appeared headed for surefire victory when 16th running Kendall Ruble spun to a stop in turn two, presenting a green-white-checkered finish, and another instance of Schnapf having to display his prowess this night on another restart.
"I knew I could restart," Schnapf confidently stated. "The motor was firing really good and I knew that just getting a restart, we got an opportunity to put three or four car lengths between us. I was happy to see that one, but with two go, I really wasn't as excited to see the caution. But I knew that, even there, just get a good start and don't miss the bottom, and it was ours."
And it was. Schnapf zipped away from the pack, leaving the battle to be fought for the runner-up position. Insanity ensued on the final corner of the final lap behind Schnapf when second-running Brackett, headed for his best career USAC finish, spun sideways in turn four, recovering only by driving through the infield and soldiering on to an 11th place result while Ballou, Kevin Thomas Jr., Carson Short and Justin Grant freight-trained by to take the remainder of the top-five spots at the checkered.
Following a relatively tough start to the night, Schnapf credits his ongoing building of experience to help him forge forward in diagnosing changes to take his ride from a good car to a winning car.
"Tonight, we actually came in way too tight; I couldn't keep the front end down on the ground," Schnapf admitted. "But, now with a few years of experience, we were able to keep traction and make a few tweaks just to make it driveable. That's where it was. It was hard to see Kyle drive away last year. All year, we searched to find that extra speed and we were never able to find it. Even though we didn't find it last year, we finally found that little bit of extra speed we needed here."
With the victory, Schnapf became the initial first-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature winner of 2020, and the first since Logan Seavey at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway in August of 2019. Schnapf was also the first first-time USAC Sprint winner at Tri-State since Carson Short in 2016.
Dave Darland's 61st career fast qualifying time during Fatheadz Eyewear time trials moved him past Tracy Hines for second all-time in series history. Darland, the all-time winningest driver in series history now ranks just four behind Tom Bigelow's record of 65 fast qualifying times.

Dominic Scelzi scores first-ever All Star victory during Thunder Through The Plains finale at Chatham Speedway
CHATHAM, La. (June 14, 2020) - Just 24 hours following his near-tie for second-place at Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, eventually resolved over a friendly game of rock-paper-scissors with Rudeen Racing’s Cory Eliason, Fresno, California’s Dominic Scelzi did two spots better on Sunday evening and scored a first-ever Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory during the Cometic Gasket Thunder Through The Plains presented by Hercules Tire finale at Chatham Speedway in Chatham, Louisiana.
Including his win, Scelzi ended the eight-race Thunder Through The Plains schedule with five top-five finishes.
“I’ll tell you what man, this is big for me. We’ve really been hitting our strides the last couple of nights and it’s really shown,” Dominic Scelzi said, driver of the SE Inc./Red Rose Transportation/No. 41S sprint car. “Jimmy, Marty, Aaron, Brandon; these guys have really busted their asses this week, going to a bunch of new places we’ve never been to before. I’m not even sure I ever made an All Star dash before this week. For me, this is every bit as big as winning the World Challenge. I have one more mark to add to my resume and that’s an Outlaw win. Hopefully we can do that real soon.”
The $5,000 triumph was accomplished in exciting fashion, first working underneath fellow California-native and race leader, Justin Sanders, at the exit of turn four with eight laps complete, then surviving multiple single-file restarts before holding off two-time All Star champion and Kilgore winner, Aaron Reutzel, in a drag race to the final checkers. The drag race, separated by a mere-.2 seconds, was initiated by a caution and a restart with two circuits remaining.
Justin Sanders, who actually retook command from Scelzi for a single circuit on lap 27, doing so by using the bottom groove to sneak below the familiar No. 41s at the exit of turn four, held on to finish third at Chatham, followed by Zeb Wise and Paul McMahan.
“We were lucky to hang on those last two laps, especially with Aaron (Reutzel) breathing down our neck,” Scelzi continued. “Getting a little love tap at the end from Aaron, and Paul (McMahan) and everyone giving me a thumbs-up, it just goes to show how big of a following and friends I have in this sport. I haven’t won a lot of races, but this is a big one. I just want to thank the big man upstairs. I’m going to get really drunk tonight.”
