Hafertepe Dominates Hockett/McMillin Memorial Finale At Lucas Oil Speedway
Bryan Hulbert - WHEATLAND, Mo. (September 22, 2018) Winning for the second year in a row, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. dominated the 30-lap, $10,000 to win finale to the 8th annual Hockett/McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com.
"Just unbelievable, we haven't won a big race all year long and we were really missing it last night and I just told my guys, we're thinking too hard. Let's just go back to what we know and that's what we did tonight, and the track came around exactly like I thought it would," said Sam, who picked up his 36th career win with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com.
Winning out through several restarts that saw a pair of flips and a pair of cautions, every time the green dropped it was Hafertepe who won the drag race into the first turn over Wayne Johnson. Normally sticking to the high line, the final restart saw Johnson jump across the cushion, but it was still Hafertepe who pulled away.
Asked what the key to getting the lead, Sam stated, "It didn't really matter, we were so good that he could lead into one, and we were still going to lead off two. We had a really good race car and having a car that was that good, even if the start doesn't go your way, you just wait a half-lap and get it done."
Working into traffic by Lap 7, the back markers didn't slow the Heidbreder Foundation No. 15h an inch, Wayne Johnson sat a distant second battling an ever-tightening race car, the Outlaw Wings No. 2c finally had a challenge for the runner-up spot on Lap 20 with Scott Bogucki working to the second podium step the following revolution.
Hoping for a caution despite the myriad of lapped cars in the running order, the caution lights stayed dark as Sam rolled under the checkered flag 5.853 seconds ahead of Bogucki's Sawblade.com No. 28. Wayne Johnson held for his 158th career podium finish.
Moving through the field from 12th, Seth Bergman was the night's CP-Carrillo Hard Charger with his fourth-place finish. Tony Bruce, Jr. crossed fifth with Matt Covington sixth after a fierce battle with Dylan Westbrook who crossed seventh. Johnny Herrera finished eighth with
Blake Hahn making the most of provisional to claiming from 23rd to ninth. Carson Short rounded out the top-ten.
With the Hockett/McMillin Memorial in the books, teams will gear up for the final run to the 2018 Championship as four nights remain. Things fire off again on Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20 with the 45th Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals in Mesquite, Texas followed by the Creek County Speedway Fall Fling on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27 in Sapulpa, Okla.

Brad Sweet Tames Lernerville for Exciting Commonwealth Clash Victory
SARVER, PA – September 23, 2018 - Brad Sweet’s fantastic 2018 season continued Saturday night at Lernerville Speedway when he passed Donny Schatz on Lap 28 to become the fourth and final different leader of the 2018 Commonwealth Clash for his eighth win on the year. Schatz settled for second with former Lernerville track champion Tim Shaffer completing the podium.
Daryn Pittman won the Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole for the 35-Lap Feature, alongside Tim Shaffer. Pittman jumped out to the early lead through a caution-filled first few laps. Brent Marks fell off the race track in turn three on the opening lap, leaving David Gravel nowhere to go as the two made contact, resulting in terminal front end damage for Marks
After consecutive Yellows on Lap 1, the field lined up single-file. Shaffer went for the slide job to take the lead on the restart, but Pittman turned it back under to maintain control.
Shaffer was relentless in pursuit of Pittman and took the lead off of turn four to lead Lap 6 to the delight of the hometown crowd.
During the long Green Flag stretch, Shaffer established a healthy lead through the heavy traffic. Donny Schatz got underneath Pittman to take second on Lap 18 and set his eyes on Shaffer.
Sweet continued his way forward getting by Pittman and getting an up-close look on the battle for the lead between Schatz and Shaffer. Schatz got a good run off the cushion in turn four to slide Shaffer into turn one to take command on Lap 22.
A lap later Sweet slid in front of Shaffer as the top two in Outlaw points established themselves as the class of the field as they have so many times this season.
Sweet got a massive run on the nine-time Series Champion out of turn two and blasted underneath to take the lead down the backstretch and officially lead Lap 28. Sweet powered away and looked to be well on his way to his eighth victory of the year, but a caution for sixth-place running Sheldon Haudenschild with three laps to go put the celebration on hold.
With less than five to go in the Feature World of Outlaws rules dictate a single-file restart, which allowed Schatz to attempt a slide job for the lead. Sweet powered around the Schatz slider to maintain the lead down the backstretch and go on to win his first Outlaw Feature at Lernerville.
“I struggled for the first few years of my career at this track, it’s nice to come here and be as fast we’ve been this year. The track was great, there were so many options of where to go in lapped traffic. You could rimride on that thin ledge or get going around the bottom,” Sweet said in Victory Lane in appreciation of the racing surface.
“This one is for Greg Hodnett, he was a good friend of mine. It’s been a tough year. We’ll celebrate this one a little for him and move on to the next one,” Sweet said with his heart on his sleeve.
Donny Schatz bounced back from an uncharacteristic bad night at Eldora to finish second.
“The track was tricky tonight, second isn’t bad, especially considering the night we had last night,” Schatz, who was forced into a Provisional for the first time in 2018 last night, said with a little grin.
When asked about the late-race restart, Schatz was honest. “I didn’t have much grip and I’m not going to use Brad up or run myself off the track. Luckily, I have these [crew] guys behind me and we’ll have more grip next time we come back,” Schatz said positively.
Tim Shaffer completed the podium and complimented Sweet and Schatz. “Those guys are on their game and third isn’t too bad against these guys. Those [pointing at Sweet and Schatz’ team] teams are what we are trying to build up this team up to,” Shaffer said next to his DR Racing No.49X.
Logan Schuchart was strong for the second consecutive night coming home fourth with Daryn Pittman completing the top-five. Central Pennsylvania invader Danny Dietrich earned KSE Hard Charger Honors coming from 14th to sixth.
The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series heads into Central Pennsylvania next weekend for the Champion Racing Oil National Open against the Pennsylvania Posse at Williams Grove Speedway. Saturday’s Feature at The Grove will pay $56,000 to win, making it the second-highest paying event on the World of Outlaws schedule in 2018. CUMMINS DOMINATES AT LUCAS OIL SPEEDWAY IN HOCKETT/MCMILLIN MEMORIAL

Wheatland, MO (September 22, 2018) - Outlasting a historic 78-car field, Kyle Cummins dominated Saturday's Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial main event to extend his POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprints League record to three career victories. After earning LRB, Inc. #HighPointMan honors in preliminary action, the Princeton, Indiana native followed that up with a win in the RAMS Racing Pole Shuffle and then a wire-to-wire triumph as he led all 30 feature laps. The victory means that if Cummins can park his EZR No. 3C in victory lane at Fairbury American Legion Speedway on October 6th, then he will sweep the Bell Racing USA Triple Crown Challenge and take home a $20,000 payday.
With combined points from the split preliminary fields lining up Saturday's action, all that was on tap for the Hockett/McMillin Memorial finale was two C-Mains, a pole shuffle, two B-Mains, and the 30-lap main event.
Jack Wagner kicked things off with a win in Hinchman Racewear C-Main one and transferred on with Mitchell Davis, Brad Ryan and Ben Brown. Jack's younger brother, Samuel Wagner, won the second Bell Racing USA C-Main and transferred with Joe B. Miller, Chase Porter and Vinny Ward.
In the RAMS Racing Pole Shuffle, Colten Cottle of Kansas, Illinois was the show early on, as he electrified the crowd by winning three straight rounds. In the end, Kyle Cummins topped Landon Simon, Riley Kreisel and Wyatt Burks to secure the pole position of the 30-lap main event.
Moving onto B-Main action, the first Schure Built Suspension B-Main saw Tyler Thomas take the win and transfer to the main event with Mitchell Davis, Brandon Mattox, Korey Weyant, Andrew Deal and Chris Parkinson. In Wilwood Disc Brakes B-Main two, it was Zach Daum winning and transferring with Thomas Meseraull, Danny Smith, Chad Goff, Clinton Boyles and Wesley Smith. The story from the B-Mains was quite simply Mitchell Davis, who entered the night 73rd in points and ensued to go 15th-to-2nd in the C and 17th-to-2nd in the B as he ran the alphabet soup and qualified for the main event.
Firing off the POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprints League main event in front of a packed house at Lucas Oil Speedway, it was Kyle Cummins taking the early lead over Landon Simon, Colten Cottle, Wyatt Burks and Riley Kriesel. A red flag on lap six for ninth-place running Matt Moore would bring the field to a halt as the No. 9 went wildly flipping down the front stretch. Moore quickly climbed out of the car under his own power.
As Cummins pulled away on the ensuing restart, a fierce battle for the second spot developed between Simon, Kreisel Cottle and Burks. As the cross flags waved at the halfway mark, all eyes were locked on Simon and Kreisel, who were engaged in a full on WAR for the runner-up position. That battle would soon end, however, as the turn two cushion bit Kreisel and sent his No. 90 on the bike. The young Warsaw, Missouri native miraculously set the car back down and saved a near-disastrous crash, but could not prevent it from sliding into the wall and coming to a stop to bring out the caution.
Coming to the final restart with 14 laps left, Simon bolted to the top and presented a challenge for the lead momentarily as Cummins remained committed to the bottom. Cummins would slowly extend his lead as Cottle and Burks both snuck past Simon to move into podium positions with ten to go. With five laps remaining, it looked as if Cottle was cutting into the lead, but he nor the other 26 starters could stop Kyle Cummins on this night.
Cummins, of Princeton, Indiana, led all 30 laps to score the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial championship in dominating fashion. Marking his fourth night of competition with the POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprints League, it was the third time Cummins has visited victory lane with the league. His win at Lucas Oil Speedway was preceded by a victory at Lake Ozark Speedway in August, and means that a triumph at Fairbury American Legion Speedway on October 6th would give Cummins a clean sweep of the Bell Racing USA Triple Crown Challenge and send him home with a whopping $20,000 payday!

Following Cummins to the finish line in the Hockett/McMillin Memorial finale was Wyatt Burks with a second-place finish in his No. 11W entry. Colten Cottle backed up his impressive pole shuffle run with a podium result of third for his No. 5C machine in the main event. Landon Simon of Brownsburg, Indiana brought his Mount Baker Vapor No. 24 home in the fourth spot, while Anthony Nicholson of Tennessee rounded out the top five. Closing out the top ten on Saturday night was Chris Phillips in sixth, Brandon Mattox in seventh, Thomas Meseraull in eighth, Clinton Boyles in ninth, and Zach Daum in tenth.
The POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprints League will take next weekend off before reconvening on Friday and Saturday, October 5th and 6th, at Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, Illinois for "Sprint Mania." The event will mark the conclusion to the 2018 season as we crown the league champion at FALS. It is a co-sanctioned event along with the POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Wildcard Sprints League.

SUNSHINE STRIKES 10 WITH ELDORA SPRINT WIN

Rossburg, Ohio.........To get to double-digits in the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car win column, you must win at Eldora Speedway.
Maybe it's an omen, a harbinger or what have you, but history tells us as much.
Courtney reiterated that fact Saturday night during the 37th running of the "4-Crown Nationals" presented by NKT.TV, marking just the tenth occasion a driver has reached at least 10 series wins in a season and the 10th of those select drivers in that club to win at Eldora during their banner year.
Tom Bigelow (14 wins), J.J. Yeley & Robert Ballou (13), Larry Dickson & Pancho Carter (12), Bubby Jones (11), Dickson, Carter & Jay Drake (10) each got it done at Eldora on their magical seasons. Now you can add a little "Sunshine" to that list.
However, the ride to get there on this night was a tad turbulent early on as the team ran into mechanical issues that forced them to swap out the engine for another bullet following qualifying. It seemed to do the trick as Courtney walloped the competition in his heat race, then proceeded to decimate the field for much of the 30-lapper in his Clauson Marshall Newman Racing/Priority Aviation - Competition Suspension, Inc./Spike/Rider Chevy until having to hold off a late surge from hard-charging C.J. Leary left that fairytale ending hanging in the balance momentarily.
Courtney started from the pole position, but it was 2007 "4-Crown" USAC Sprint Car winner Robert Ballou who eked into the lead from his outside front row starting spot to lead the opening lap with Leary and Courtney in tow.
As Leary trailed Ballou, the reigning "4-Crown" Sprint Car winner was amidst a battle with Courtney for second. Courtney threaded the dot of the i around the outside of Leary in turn two. Leary then snagged the concrete and spun completely around down the back straightaway and somehow, someway, avoided catastrophe as the entire field missed him, allowing him to restart, although he would now have to come from the tail in 22nd.
Following the restart, Courtney made his surge, sliding past Ballou entering the third turn. Ballou countered with an uppercut to the chin and clung to his grip of the lead as the pair crossed the line. Courtney reloaded and fired his next shot, sliding to the lead past Ballou entering turn one. By lap 10, Courtney's advantage was a full-straight ahead of Ballou.
Ballou's bid to get back into the game hit a literal snag on the 14th lap when he clipped the turn two outside wall and spun around to a stop, ending his evening earlier than anticipated. That moved Justin Grant into second where he and the hard-charging Leary took a full head a steam at running down Courtney. Grant found the demise of his night in the same spot that took caught Leary and Ballou earlier in turn two. Grant's car churned against the concrete along the back straight before grinding to a halt with four laps remaining.

Leary was in second behind Courtney for the lap 27 restart, but a challenge to Courtney's throne was discarded almost immediately as Courtney blitzed to a good jump when action resumed. The only race for position was behind Courtney as Leary, Kevin Thomas, Jr. and Isaac Chapple roamed three-wide at times for the runner-up position.
It was all to Courtney's advantage, however, as he drove away to his tenth series win of the year and joined Jack Hewitt, Kyle Larson, Jerry Coons, Jr. and Dave Darland as the fifth driver to win in a Midget, USAC Sprint Car and Silver Crown car during his "4-Crown" career.
Leary finished second ahead of Chapple, who scored a career-best third-place result. Point leader Thomas was fourth ahead of Chris Windom.

Aaron Reutzel cruises to 4-Crown victory at Eldora Speedway
ROSSBURG, Ohio (September 22, 2018) - Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 championship contender Aaron Reutzel made his ninth All Star victory of the season look effortless on Saturday night at The Big E, charging ahead from row four to the top spot in just 12 circuits, eventually driving on to score a first-ever Eldora Speedway victory during the 37th running of the coveted 4-Crown Nationals.
After starting from the outside-pole position and leading the first 11 circuits, Kokomo, Indiana’s Parker Price-Miller held on to finish second at the World’s Greatest Dirt Track, followed by Indy Race Parts teammate Gio Scelzi, Travis Philo, and Cole Duncan.
In response to the tragic loss of sprint car great Greg Hodnett, the All Star 4-Crown Nationals A-main was altered from 25 laps to 27 laps.
“It is unbelievable to win at Eldora,” Aaron Reutzel explained, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports No. 87. “This win is all because of my crew chief, Grant Boyum. What a race car. We had the boss’ car out last night during the Outlaw show and we weren’t any good. We tried some things and they didn’t work, but tonight Grant did what he had to do and this car was incredible. It was going to be tough to beat Parker [Price-Miller], but luckily I had a car that could drive through the center and rotate well. This is exciting.”
A dominating performance to say the least, Reutzel’s charge to the front started right from the drop of the green flag, advancing four positions during the first three circuits of the 27-lapper. A red flag incident on lap eight involving Carson Macedo, who was battling within the top-five at the time, gave Reutzel an opportunity to capitalize. The ensuing restart resulted in Reutzel advancing two more positions, ultimately getting by Brock Zearfoss for third, then utilizing a slider in turns three and four to get by Cole Duncan to take second on lap nine.
Caution flags flew again on lap 11 once again setting up a single-file restart, this time putting Reutzel right on the back bumper of race-long leader, Parker Price Miller. When green flag action returned, Reuzel made his move, actually chasing Price-Miller back to the flagstand to complete lap 11 before getting underneath the Indy Race Parts No. 71P entry at the midpoint of turns one and two on lap 12. For the second time in four laps, a big move by Reutzel equaled success, keeping Price-Miller behind him as the duo raced back to the start/finish line to complete the circuit.
Despite caution flags reappearing on lap 15 creating another single-file restart, the field had nothing for Reutzel. The Clute, Texas, native drove on unchallenged, even manhandling a few spurts of lapped traffic during the final five circuits.
“We have one hell of a points battle going on right now and it has taken all the fun out of the racing,” Reutzel continued. “We needed this win bad. I didn’t want to go into the final round behind someone in the point chase. We want to win this championship so bad.”
With Eldora Speedway’s 4-Crown Nationals officially in the books, Aaron Reutzel will enter the final round of the 2018 All Star Circuit of Champions season in two weeks with a 64-point cushion in the All Star driver championship chase, also owning a 32-point lead in the owner title chase for car owner, Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports. The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will conclude the 2018 season with the #GYATKExtravaganza at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Ind., on Saturday, October 6.

Brent Marks Caps Emotional Evening with Thrilling Eldora Triumph
ROSSBURG, OH - September 21, 2018 — On an emotional night at one of the most famous dirt tracks in the world, Brent Marks won a thrilling race, passing fellow Central Pennsylvania Outlaw Logan Schuchart for the lead on Lap 23 and holding off a furious charge from 13th-starting Dave Blaney, Schuchart and 23rd-starting Greg Wilson. It was Marks' third career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory and first at the historic Eldora Speedway. Marks dedicated the win to Greg Hodnett, who passed tragically the night before in an unsanctioned race in Pennsylvania.
Logan Schuchart won the Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole for the 30-Lap Feature, alongside David Gravel. Schuchart darted out to the early lead and Brent Marks, who started third, blasted around the bottom to take second down the backstretch.
Schuchart set a torrid pace out front as Marks went to war with Kraig Kinser for the runner-up position. With Marks banging down the cushion and Kinser catfishing around the bottom, the duo battled side-by-side for the better part of five laps.
As Schuchart reached heavy lapped traffic, Kinser and Marks’ battle continued and they both closed in on the Shark Racing No.1S. Kinser edged Marks by a nose at the line on Lap 12, which would prove crucial as the caution would fly for Parker Price-Miller, who lost a left rear tire running in the top ten.
Schuchart elected the bottom on the double-file restart, moving Kinser to his outside. Kinser, who was glued to the bottom prior to the caution, fell back on the start, as Marks moved back into second.
Some contact the following lap between a slew of cars in the top ten, sent Gio Scelzi high into turn one, grazing the wall. Scelzi came down off the wall and got together with Daryn Pittman, resulting in the Kasey Kahne Racing No.9 upside down. Both drivers were uninjured but done for the evening.
The ensuing double-file restart saw Schuchart again choose the bottom with Marks to his outside this time. Schuchart remained in command with Marks in tow. 13th-starting Dave Blaney threw his name in the ring, battling Gravel and Kinser for the third position, three-wide at times.
Simultaneously, 23rd-starting Greg Wilson was coming, in typical Greg Wilson Eldora fashion, glued to the inside guard rail.
Back up front, Marks was closing in on Schuchart and threw a slide job for the lead into turn one on Lap 23. Schuchart fought back underneath Marks to maintain the lead going into turn three, where he went to the bottom. Marks put his family-owned No.19 right up against the wall, grabbing the cushion off of turn four and taking command of the field to lead the lap.
Marks powered away from Schuchart, who now had his hands full with the hard-charging Blaney and Wilson. Blaney took second from Schuchart and set his sights on Marks. After Marks got held up ever so slightly in traffic, Blaney attempted a slide job in turn three with three laps remaining, but Marks stayed on the gas and powered around the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame member to maintain control.
Blaney’s slide job attempt for the lead cost him momentum as Wilson and Schuchart, who found late race speed right up against the outside wall, caught and surpassed the veteran by the White Flag.
But tonight, there was no catching Brent Marks, as the Myerstown, PA native went on to win his third World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Feature of the season and of his career.
“We’re all really thinking about Greg [Hodnett] and his family, he’s somebody I’ve respected tremendously throughout my whole career and was always a fan of growing up in Central Pennsylvania. This race is for him and his whole family and everyone back in Pennsylvania mourning his loss,” an emotional Marks said to a large applause from the Eldora Speedway crowd.
“This is awesome, I can’t believe I won a race at Eldora. This is my first Outlaw win that my Mom and Dad were able to see. I can’t thank my guys Jesse and Dallas enough, and we just added Jim Shuttlesworth. Last week was our first weekend together, we kept talking and improving throughout the night and working together well. This is special, I can’t believe I’m standing in Victory Lane at Eldora,” Marks added.
When asked about the race itself, Marks talked about the tricky cushion, “I knew I needed to be more aggressive on the wall, but the top was right up against the wall and I didn’t want to tear this thing up. I changed my entry into turn three and Logan started coming to me,”
“I can’t believe it’s my sophomore season with the World of Outlaws and I have three wins now, I can’t thank everyone who helps out with this operation enough,” Marks concluded.
Fellow Central Pennsylvania native Logan Schuchart settled for second after leading 22 laps, “It’s tough, lapped cars are so hard to judge. It’s hard leading a race and knowing where to go, I didn’t feel as comfortable up top and I felt I was slowing down, so I moved down. Brent drove a great race.”
“This is all for the Heffner Racing No.27 team and everybody back home, we’ve got a couple of PA boys up front and this is all for them,” Schuchart added with emotion.
The obvious KSE Hard Charger was 23rd-starting Greg Wilson who finished on the podium for the second time this year at Eldora.
“We’re good when it slicks off. This is how the tracks need to be. The race track was awesome tonight, there was passing,” Wilson said before reflecting about the recent tragedy in Sprint Car Racing.
“My heart goes out to the Hodnett family. I woke up this morning and looked at my wife and girls and wondered if I should keep doing this. I love it, though. I wouldn’t trade this opportunity to race with my wife and kids at Eldora in front of all you fans for anything,” Wilson, the Ohio native, said to a thunderous roar from the crowd.
Dave Blaney faded to fourth in the closing laps, still no small feat coming from 13th, with Gravel completing the top five.
Kraig Kinser was strong all evening and settled for sixth with Hunter Schuerenburg, who set Quick Time, and Sheldon Haudenschild finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Rico Abreu charged from 21st to ninth with 17th-starting Jason Sides completing the top-ten.

ANTHONY NICHOLSON WINS CAREER-FIRST WITH WAR ON NIGHT TWO OF HOCKETT/MCMILLIN MEMORIAL
Wheatland, MO (September 21, 2018) - The fans in attendance at Lucas Oil Speedway on Friday night were treated to a thrilling show as the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial continued on with the Rockwell Security qualifying night. Another field of 39 POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprints League competitors signed-in for action, giving us a new event record of 78 total entries this weekend. At the conclusion of Friday's show, another new winner rose to the top as Anthony Nicholson of Millingston, Tennessee outlasted a fleet of challengers in the green-to-checkered 25-lapper to score the preliminary triumph at the 'Diamond of the Dirt Tracks."
Opening the night with another four-set series of group qualifying hot laps, quicktime honors were taken by Kyle Cummins (16.053), Anthony Nicholson (15.771), Danny Smith (16.055) and Colten Cottle (15.358) as the Rockwell Security qualifying night fired off. In heat race action, Hinchman Racewear heat one was taken by Kyle Cummins, Bell Racing USA heat two was won by Chad Goff, Schure Built Suspension heat three was claimed by Wyatt Burks and Wilwood Disc Brakes heat four went to Mitch Wissmiller. A trio of ten-lap qualifiers was next, which saw Riley Kreisel score High Side Design qualifier one, Quinton Benson take Indy Race Parts qualifier two and Matt Moore steal Chalk Racing Stix qualifier three.
With another eight-car inversion mixing up the feature field, it was Anthony Nicholson and Mitch Wissmiller leading us to the green flag. However, neither would command the opening circuit, as third-starter Matt Moore methodically hit the bottom and snuck by both to lead the first lap. Lead change after lead change would follow as Nicholson took the lead on lap two, before Wissmiller held the point on the third circuit.
Wissmiller finally grabbed a firm command of the top spot as he started to sneak away, blasting the top of the 3/8th-mile surface in his No. 1 entry. While Wissmiller maintained the lead, Wyatt Burks snuck into the second spot from fifth and Riley Kreisel and Kyle Cummins were hustling into the top five.
As Wissmiller remained committed to the cushion, Burks approached him by rolling the bottom and overtook him for the lead on the tenth circuit. While a new leader emerged, a hectic battle ensued for the runner-up spot as Wissmiller, Nicholson, Kreisel, Cummins and Moore were practically competing under a blanket. Taking over second just past halfway, Kreisel looked to be the firm challenger for Burks' lead, but a mistake on the cushion sent Kreisel fading and moved Nicholson up to P2 with ten to go.
Reeling in Burks lap-after-lap, Nicholson re-appeared after falling to fourth and was there to contend in the late running. As Burks slipped off the bottom of turns one and two, Nicholson capitalized and drove by him to reclaim the top spot on the 20th circuit. From there, Nicholson went unchallenged en route to a victory.
The Friday night triumph marked the first of Nicholson's POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprints League career. It was an emotional win for the Tennessee native, who admittedly had a troubling 2018 season, prior to this huge breakthrough on a big stage. Nicholson's victory also made it 19 different winners in 26 WAR races this season, with 11 of those being first-time winners.

Following Nicholson to the line on Friday night was Wyatt Burks in the second spot after leading ten laps around the midway point. Entering the feature as the LRB, Inc. #HighPointMan, Kyle Cummins continued his stellar night and grabbed an eighth-to-third charge in the feature. Making a last-lap pass to take the fourth position, Oklahoma's Matt Moore continued his streak of never finishing outside the top five with WAR, as tonight marked his third race with the league. Falling to fifth after a nearly-disastrous last-lap encounter with lap traffic, Warsaw, Missouri's Riley Kreisel hung on to round out the top five in his No. 90. Closing out the top ten was Colten Cottle in sixth, Danny Smith in seventh, Zach Daum in eighth, Andrew Deal in ninth and Quinton Benson in tenth.
With both preliminary nights now complete, all that remains for the 2018 Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial is the Saturday night championship finale. With the new format, Saturday's program includes two C-Mains, two B-Mains, a pole shuffle and the final main event, to decide this year's champion.
