KODY SWANSON REDEEMS WITH NIGHT BEFORE THE 500 SPRINT WIN

By: Richie Murray - USAC Media

Brownsburg, Indiana (August 22, 2020).........Following a discouraging conclusion to a superb first half performance in Friday night's USAC Silver Crown event at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Ind., Kody Swanson and Nolen Racing were opted to claim a sense of redemption in Saturday night's Night Before the 500 USAC Sprint Car non-points special event.

Swanson, the Silver Crown point leader, led the first 40 laps of Friday's main event before a rear brake caliper failed on his car, relegating him out of contention for a win. Come Saturday, Swanson and the Nolen team weren't keen on having their winning plans thwarted once again, which they demonstrated by completing a night's sweep as fast qualifier and feature winner, leading all 40 laps in wire-to-wire fashion to claim the $10,000 top prize.

After Friday's whirlwind, the lost opportunity ate at Swanson, and he along with the Greenwood, Ind. based team weren't going to let opportunity slip through their fingers when they rolled their car onto LOR's pit lane bright and early on Saturday morning for the Sprint Car debut at the 70th Night Before the 500.

"It was actually pretty rough, I tell you," Swanson admitted of his two-race losing "'streak.'" Last night was actually tough because we put so much into the Silver Crown series and the effort there. We had one whale of a racecar last night."

Well, they had one whale of racecar on this night as well by any measure. Kody was Saturday's fastest qualifier in both the midget and sprint car divisions, which set him up for a spot on the pole in both of the night's features with the races lining up "straight up" based on qualifying time.

A win this past June at LOR in Must See Racing Sprint Car competition came with the team's trusty V6 engine. This time, the otherwise traditional V8 was under the hood of the Nolen Racing/KECO Coatings - Goodridge - K & N Filters/Beast/Tranter Chevy.

"It's the first time we've had this engine in this racecar," Swanson revealed. "We're a V6 team but we didn't know if we'd be able to hold everybody off here in a big race like this with it."

Right off the bat, the first lap spelled doom for eighth starting Nick Hamilton and fifth starting Ken Schrader, who was making his first Sprint Car start at LOR in his long, illustrious career. Both drivers and their cars wound up against the SAFER barrier in turn two, putting a sudden conclusion to each of their nights.

Early on, outside front row starter Aaron Pierce presented a steady challenge to Swanson as he kept pace to the inside of Swanson throughout the duration of the opening circuit. Swanson reached the start/finish line first at the end of lap one by a mere nose over Pierce, who promptly fell into line behind Swanson and gave chase to the five-time Silver Crown titlist.

Throughout the middle stages, Swanson's main culprit was the slew of traffic that lie ahead of him. As Swanson darted around and in-between the cars at the tail end of the lead lap, second-running Pierce inched his way closer to Swanson to within a couple car lengths away from the lead.

By lap 25, Swanson was in the clear as he ripped by the last remaining tail-end lead lap car, for the time being, that stood in his path to victory. Once clear, Swanson's field of vision only involved one car within his sight that shared the same straightaway as himself, providing him ample time to open his lead back up and distance himself from Pierce.

Kody Swanson and Nolen Racing completed a night's sweep as fast qualifier and feature winner, leading all 40 laps, wire-to-wire, to claim the $10,000 top prize.

It was easy-peasy from that point forward as Swanson was switching to glide to lead the remainder, and the entirety, of the feature event for his second LOR win in the past two nights, and third of the year. It was a more-than-welcome sight for the Kingsburg, Calif. native after the wrinkle that dogged the team the night before in the Silver Crown race.

"Today, they rallied and gave us a great sprint car," Swanson remarked. "I appreciate the effort of everyone that's a part of this Nolen Racing team. We do this in memory of Gene (Nolen), and I'm so thankful for his son, Greg, who's carrying the torch for us and doing a great job of running a race team. These guys are first class and I'm thankful to be racing for them."

Pierce finished 2nd to a Swanson for the second consecutive night at LOR. Friday night, it was Tanner, and on Saturday, the culprit was Kody keeping Pierce at Bay. Kyle Hamilton recorded a pair of third-place results on Saturday in both the midget and the sprint car feature. Tyler Roahrig (Mishawaka, Ind.) took 4th in the final tally while Tanner Swanson finished 5th on the heels of a Silver Crown victory the night before. Bobby Santos, meanwhile, scored a 6th after winning the Midget feature earlier in the evening.

ATTICA, Ohio – Cap Henry continued his dominance at Attica Raceway Park Saturday, lapping up to the fourth place car to earn his seventh 410 victory of the year and an extra $1,000 for sweeping the double-header weekend at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant on Foster’s Auto Body/Croghan Colonial Bank Night.

Henry, from Republic, Ohio, took the lead on lap 8 of the 30 lap affair and never looked back in the non-stop feature for the Callie’s Performance Products 410 Sprints. It was his 10th overall victory of 2020 and his 12 career win at Attica.

“With tonight not being a points night Zach (Meyers) and I kind of took a little bit of an effort to try some stuff we haven’t been able to….not really sure if it was better or not but we were good. It’s crazy to stand down here this much in a season. Zach and Jim and Brett and Tess and Dana and Patty and everyone involved…it takes a team effort to do this and I’m super grateful for what I have,” said Henry beside his Dragons Milk White, New Holland Spirits, Beer Barrel Bourbon, FK Rod Ends, Wings Unlimited, Kistler Engines, J&J Auto Racing, Linder Shocks, Simpson, Ballistic Designs, Big D’s Pizza, Lead Head Water Fowl, Geck Electric, Nemesis Designs backed #4

Fremont, Ohio’s Paul Weaver became the third leader of the 25 lap Fremont Fence 305 Sprints A-main on lap 20 and drove to his fourth feature win of the season at Attica. It was his 53rd career win in the division at the track.

“We struggled the last couple of weeks….we were a top five car. We just tightened it up a little more and going out second definitely helped as far as maneuvering around. You didn’t have to rely on the top which was fast with a clear track. I have to thank B&B Drain, Bob Hampshire and Dave Rice, M&L Excavating,” said Weaver.

Fostoria, Ohio’s Shawn Valenti held off several late race charges from Jim Holcomb to earn the dirt truck feature win. It was his 19th career win in the division at Attica as he sits atop the all-time victory list.

“I watched Jamie (Miller) in that 305 race and I thought man he’s going to do same thing in truck and be tough. A lot of guys want to count this truck out already but I think we’re going to be around awhile. I have to thank Adam Jones at A Plus Auto Center for the extra money tonight. He’s an awesome guy and a great backer on this truck,” said Valenti beside his Best Performance Motorsports, A Plus Auto Center, Craig Miller Trucking, KS Sales & Service, Gressman Powersports, Dave Story Equipment, Speedways Bar and Grill backed #7B.

“A couple of weeks ago I lost a dear friend who was a good fan. We lost him to cancer and I want to say this one is for you crazy Dave,” added Valenti.

Cale Conley and Henry brought the field to green for the 30-lap 410 A-main with Conley bolting into a commanding lead over Henry, Mitch Harble, John Ivy, Travis Philo and Chad Kemenah. With two laps in a tremendous battle ensued for third involving Harble, Philo and Ivy with Philo taking the position a lap later.

Henry started steadily eating away at Conley’s lead and on lap eight threw a slider at him for the top spot in turns three and four. Philo grabbed second from Conley on lap 11 with Harble, Ivy, Stuart Brubaker and Kemenah in pursuit.

Henry was simply too good and drove away for the win with Philo, Conley, Ivy and Brubaker rounding out the top five.

Jamie Miller and Steve Rando comprised the front row of the 25 lap 305 sprint A-main and when the green flew Miller gained the advantage of Kyle Peters, Matt Foos, Rando, Mike Keegan and Weaver. Following a caution on lap two, Miller began to pull away while Foos moved into second.

Following a caution on lap four, Miller again got an excellent restart but could not shake Foos with Peters locked in a battle for third with Rando and Weaver. The race ground to a halt on lap eight for a Kody Brewer flip and after he walked back to the pits the racing action resumed with Miller leading Foos while Weaver charged from fourth to third.

By lap 14 Weaver began to close on Miller and Foos. Foos was able to wrestle the lead away on lap 17 with Weaver taking second two circuits later. With five laps to go Weaver drove into the lead but Foos and Miller were glued to his rear bumper.

Once in the lead Weaver pulled away the remaining four laps for the win over Foos, Miller, Keegan and Seth Schneider.

Things heated up quickly at the drop of the green for the 15 lap dirt truck feature with Dustin Keegan holding a slight advantage over Steve Sabo, Andy Keegan, Kyle Lagrou, Paul Brown Junior and Valenti. Following a caution after a lap was scored, Keegan and Sabo battled side by side for the lead while Valenti worked his way to fourth by lap three.

Sabo took the lead on lap four with Keegan and Valenti making it a three-wide affair with Valenti taking the lead on lap six. Valenti could not shake the field as Sabo and a charging Jim Holcomb stayed within striking distance.

A caution with four laps to go put Holcomb and Sabo right on Valenti’s deck lid but Valenti blasted the high line and drove to the victory over Holcomb, Sabo, Jamie Miller and Austin Black.

It’s season championship night with double points on the line for the 410 and 305 sprints and late models on Kistler Racing Products/Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome Plating presents the Mark Keegan Classic Friday, Aug. 28

RIVER RUNNER: Kyle Larson Steals Win In River Cities Debut
Logan Schuchart extends his points lead over reigning champion Brad Sweet

GRAND FORKS, ND — Aug. 21, 2020 — Kyle Larson was sideways in the Turn 4 grass with four laps to go as Logan Schuchart ran away with the lead at River Cities Speedway Friday night.

Yet, he still managed to turn an unpredictable situation into a characteristically canny conclusion.

The Elk Grove, CA driver rallied in three laps to catch and strong arm his way past the Shark Racing #1S to claim his eighth World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win in 2020 — making him the winningest driver, so far, this year in the Series.

“The Outlaws is as tough as it gets for Sprint Car racing throughout the world," Larson said. "To come in here and be as strong as we have all year long and get a lot of wins, it’s been a lot of fun. We need to keep getting our stuff better, because everyone is chasing us and getting their stuff better each race.”

Friday’s event at the quarter-mile speedway was Larson’s debut at River Cities and his first time racing in North Dakota. He kicked it off my setting quick time in Qualifying and making his way into the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash with a second-place run in his Drydene Heat Race behind David Gravel.

He drew the rear for the Dash but in typical Larson fashion, he seamlessly teleported his way from sixth to third on the opening lap of the Dash and ended up second. Gravel claimed the win — placing he and Larson on the front row for the 40-lap Feature.

Their battle around the bullring would be an extension of the war they waged for the win at Knoxville Raceway last weekend.

When the duo drag raced to Turn 1 at the start of the Feature, Larson darted ahead by ripping the top lane of the corner. Points leader Logan Schuchart followed in his tire tracks, stealing second from Gravel on the first lap, as well. The Silva Motorsports #57 did as it does every race, though, and pulled away from the field.

The end of the first 14 laps saw reigning champion Brad Sweet’s streak of bad luck continue. Wayne Johnson spun in Turn 4, causing cars to stack up. Sweet, who was fifth, jumped a tire of a slowed car in front of him and went head first into the Turn 4 wall. His Kasey Kahne Racing team was able to get his car repaired and send him back on track to make a charge from the rear. And he did. While Larson and Schuchart battled, Sweet made his way back to fifth by the end of the Feature.

Larson held a commanding lead over Schuchart for the majority of the race, but with heavy traffic in the final five laps Schuchart took advantage of the opportunity to strike. Locked on Larson’s bumper down the backstretch with four laps to go, Schuchart dove to the bottom in Turn 3. Larson also had the same idea. The two drivers made contact with Larson getting turned into the Turn 4 grass off Schuchart’s front bumper.

“I felt contact into (Turn) three,” Larson said. “I wasn't sure if it was a lapper because I came across. But thank God I was able to keep it straight. I knew there wasn’t many laps left. Had to get up on the wheel there.”

Schuchart sped away while Larson added off-roading to his resume by steering his car straight through the grass and back on to the track without losing another spot.

The win appeared to be in Schuchart’s hand as he held about a half of a straight away lead on Larson coming to the white flag. However, Larson tested the limits of his machine each corner. He throw it into Turn 1 and found enough traction to cut a few car lengths off Schuchart's lead.

On their exit of Turn 2, Schuchart couldn’t put the power down quick enough and allowed Larson to close even further. At Turn 3, Schuchart entered through the middle, while Larson went as high as he could go. Their cars met at Turn 4, but while Schuchart was sliding up, Larson turned down underneath him and rocketed by to steal the win.

“I knew he was going to have to make a decision going into (Turn) three and hoped he wasn’t going to run the cushion,” Larson said. “I knew that would be my only shot. I was just able to time the run good and clear him off of (Turn) four here.

“That was definitely an exciting one. It’s been fun to win a lot. I hope we keep it going.”

While Schuchart had to settle for second, he was still able to extend his points lead over Sweet – now 24 points ahead of the defending champion.

“It is just tough when you’re behind a guy like that,” Schuchart, of Hanover, PA, said about racing with Larson. “Kyle doesn’t make any mistakes. He’s tough. I had one shot right there. I felt like I could get through (Turns) one and two a little bit better at times and catch him.

“I felt like I had one shot there. I was getting close and had a really good run into (Turn) three when he cut to the bottom and I was trying to back off and go to the outside of him and caught his back bumper. I’m not trying to hit him, and I know he didn’t the other night at Knoxville. That’s racing and we’re racing hard. He just drove a little bit better than I did and got the job done.”

Ten-time Series champion Donny Schatz, of Fargo, ND, put on a show for his home state crowd, battling with Gravel and James McFadden for third throughout the Feature. He was able to come out on top of that battle, rounding out the podium, and rebound from a rough weekend in Knoxville where he was unable to score a top-10 finish.

“We didn’t have the right combination here tonight,” Schatz said. “Just the way it goes. When you get behind the eight ball a little bit you get a long way behind. My guys are doing an incredible job with what we have to work with and will have to keep digging.”

Gravel’s fourth-place finish helped keep Jason Johnson Racing in close contention for the team championship – only eight points behind Schuchart’s Shark Racing team.

Cory Eliason wins at Wilmot Raceway for second consecutive All Star victory

WILMOT, Wis. (August 21, 2020) - For the second time in as many starts, Visalia, California’s Cory Eliason is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, accomplishing his feat during All Star/IRA Outlaw Sprint Series co-sanctioned action at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin, on Friday evening, August 21. Impressive, nonetheless, leading 21 circuits of the 30-lap contest while maneuvering through wave after wave of slower traffic, the 2020 All Star championship hopeful was forced to manhandle an ill-handling car, as ignition trouble kept the Rudeen Racing powerplant from reaching full potential.

Despite the loss of horsepower, Eliason held strong, ultimately holding off advancements by Ian Madsen, Hunter Schuerenberg and Tyler Courtney during a pair of green-white-checkered restarts. The Wilmot Raceway victory, Eliason’s first with the Series at the southern Wisconsin short track, was accompanied by a $5,000 top prize.

“This just goes to show how hard these guys work back at the shop,” Cory Eliason said in victory lane, driver of the Rudeen Racing/Hager Realty/Rayce Rudeen Foundation/Rudeen Management/No. 26 sprint car. “It was an eventful few weeks for us with all the racing at Knoxville, but it was nice to come to a place like Wilmot and run at a track that really reminds me of back home in California. I’m not really sure what happened, but by lap three, the motor started to really go flat. Honestly, that may have helped me overall because it didn’t allow for the tires to spin. But regardless, I can’t thank Kevin Rudeen and his family enough for what they do for this race team. I’m sure they were all watching at home tonight.”

Starting third on the feature grid by way of dash result, Eliason’s initial jump proved to be an instant turning point, allowing the driver of the familiar blue No. 26 get around pole sitter Hunter Schuerenberg to secure second by the completion of lap one. At the time, Aurora, Illinois’ Blake Nimee was the main event leader, followed by Eliason, Aaron Reutzel and Schuerenberg.

By lap five, the top three found themselves staring at the back of the field, which was stacking up to be two and three wide and engulfing all lanes of the speedway. The gaggle of slower cars actually proved to be a major benefit for Eliason, who was chipping away at Nimee’s lead in a hurry.

Just four laps later, Eliason was all over Nimee for the top spot, eventually utilizing a slingshot move into corner three to blast around the race leader and a slower car. The move was successful, leaving Nimee in his tracks with Aaron Reutzel and Ian Madsen in tow.

With a caution on lap 15 making way for a clear track and clean air, Eliason’s campaign at the front of the field was relatively uneventful during the middle segment of the main event, that until caution flags reappeared with only two laps remaining, brought about by two-time All Star Circuit of Champions champion and current point leader, Aaron Reutzel, who did a 360-degree spin while battling in the fourth position.

The ensuing restart was only a tease, as Tyler Courtney, who had battled his way from tenth to second, and looked strong enough to challenge Eliason for top honors, spun to a stop in turn one collecting a handful of other competitors. Contact between Ian Madsen’s front bumper and Courtney’s rear bumper ignited the small pileup.

Despite the pause, and a sour engine, Eliason held tough on the following restart, keeping Ian Madsen, Hunter Schuerenberg, Zeb Wise, and Gerard McIntyre at bay.

ATTICA, Ohio – Cap Henry continued his dominance at Attica Raceway Park, driving to his sixth win of the year at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant in the 410 sprints on Central Ohio Farmers/Columbus Equipment /Adkins Group Night, Friday, Aug. 21.

For Henry it’s his 9th overall victory of 2020 and the 11th of his career at Attica. Henry has now won six of the 10 Callie’s Performance Products 410 Sprints A-mains at Attica this year.

The only close call Henry had was with two laps to go when he bottled slightly on the cushion in turns three and four.

“I kind of got out of my rhythm….I thought that thing was only like 25 laps long. I could have swore I took the white flag three or four times. I never got back into a good rhythm after that. I about owned these guys a huge apology. Zack (Meyers) has been getting this thing so fast. We made some last minute changes and he did the right ones. It’s a lot of fun driving something this fast,” said Henry beside his Dragon’s Milk White, Beer Barrel Bourbon, New Holland Spirits, FK Rod Ends, Wings Unlimited, Kistler Engines, J&J Auto Racing, Linder’s Speed Equipment, Simpson, Ballistic Designs, Big D’s Pizza, Lead Head Water Fowl, Geck Electric, Nemesis Designs backed #4.

Matt Miller and car owner Rick DeLong had to borrow an engine to compete but they made it pay off at Attica as Miller held off several challenges to win his second Propane.com/Dirt Nerds Podcast Late Model feature of the year at the track. It was his 10th career victory at Attica.

“I didn’t know where to run to be honest. The track’s been a little different each time we’ve been here. I felt okay but not awesome. A big shout out to Matt Carmody. We blew up our motor a couple weeks ago. He owns Jon Henry’s car but he was nice enough to let us borrow a motor,” said Miller beside his Dominator Racing, Rocket Chassis, DeLong Racing #3.

The only thing that would slow down Jamie Miller was a mechanical issue and he nearly experienced just that. Miller, the defending Fremont Fence 305 track champion, nursed a six engine the final hand full of laps, edging Paul Weaver and Kyle Capodice to the checkers for his third win of the season at Attica. It was his 27th career win at the track as he sits second all-time behind Weaver.

“I had to take it easy that last lap. This thing was only running on seven cylinders with five to go and the temperature gauge was at 280,” said Miller beside his Reedtown Tavern, Fostoria Mod Shop, Sloopy’s Pizza, Smitty’s Pizza, Phil Rister Racing, York Carpet, Crown Battery, Schriner Farms backed #26.

Shawn Dancer and TJ Michael brought the field to green for the 30-lap 410 A-main with Dancer taking the lead over Michael, Chad Kemenah, DJ Foos, Henry, Nate Dussel and Cole Macedo. A caution on lap two kept the field close and on the restart Henry vaulted from fourth to second. Another caution on lap four put Henry right on Dancer’s rear bumper and when the green flew the battle up front was on.

Dancer and Henry raced side by side for several laps before Henry was able to wrestle the lead away on lap 10 with Dancer, Kemenah, Michael, Dussel and Foos giving chase. At the half-way point Henry had built a three second lead over Dancer and increased it to nearly six seconds by lap 20.

Kemenah got around Dancer for second on lap 21 but the car on the move was eight time track champion Byron Reed who had stormed from 12th to fourth. Reed took third with four laps to go.

Henry caught the back of the field with about eight laps remaining and was content to ride behind them as Kemenah could only close to within 3.6 seconds. Henry bobbled once with two to go but kept his composure and took the win with Reed getting around Kemenah on the white flag lap to finish second. Kemenah, Foos and Dancer completed the top five.

In a caution-filled 25 lap late model feature, Miller immediately grabbed the lead from his pole starting position as two cautions prevented any laps to get scored. Four cautions within the first four laps kept the field close.

When the green flew after three circuits had been complete Miller and Ryan Markham battled hard for the lead with Mike Bores, Jeff Warnick, Devin Shiels giving chase. The final caution flew on lap 13 with Miller leading Markham, Bores Shiels, Matt Irey who had gone to the tail after an early race incident, Larry Bellman and Ryan Missler.

Bores drove into second on lap 15 and closed on Miller with Irey taking third from Markham who would go pit side on lap 19. Miller kept his car straight and smooth on the bottom and drove to the win over Bores who edged Irey, Shiels, who has yet to finish out of the top five in 2020 at Attica and Bellman rounding out the top five.

Matt Foos and Miller paced the field for the 25 lap 305 A-main and after an opening yellow, Miller quickly used the extreme high line to take the lead over Foos, Paul Weaver, Mike Keegan, Jimmy McGrath and Seth Schneider.

Miller quickly pulled away from the field as Foos, Weaver, Keegan and Schneider gave chase. A caution with seven laps in kept Miller within striking distance. But once the green flew so did Miller, once again pulling away while Foos and Weaver battled side by side lap after lap for second. The car on the move was 10th starter Kyle Capodice as he moved into fourth by lap 12.

Following a caution with 10 laps to go, Miller’s over-heating mount would not let him pull away as he had before. Weaver stayed within a car length while Foos and Capodice battled for third. The final caution flew with just six laps to go and Miller had his hands full on the restart with a closing Capodice and Weaver.

Coming to the checkers it was a three-wide drag race for the win with Miller holding off Weaver who edged Capodice for the runner-up spot, Foos and Schneider rounded out the top five.

SPRINT CARS MAKE NIGHT BEFORE THE 500 DEBUT ON SATURDAY

By: Richie Murray - USAC Media

Brownsburg, Indiana (August 18, 2020).........Ken Schrader, Tanner Swanson and Bobby Santos have each shared their taste of Night Before the 500 glory once in their careers behind the wheel of a midget.

This Saturday night, August 22, at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Ind., these three, amongst many others, will have their opportunity to become the first to place their name on the winners' list in a sprint car at the NB4500, a USAC non-points special event.

Ken Schrader (Fenton, Mo.), the 1982 USAC Silver Crown and 1983 USAC National Sprint Car champion, won the event in a midget back in 1983. The four-time NASCAR Cup series winner, and 23-time pole starter, also corralled victories in a Silver Crown car at LOR in both 1986 and 1989.

Tanner Swanson (Kingsburg, Calif.) notched his NB4500 victory in 2010. He's been a victor in two of the three series of USAC National racing in his career at LOR, winning a record-tying five Silver Crown races along with one in the midget. He finished 2nd and 3rd in his two most recent USAC Sprint outings at LOR in 2011.

Bobby Santos (Franklin, Mass.) won his very first career USAC National Sprint Car race at LOR back in 2006. The 2006 NB4500 winner is one of just eight drivers to win a USAC National Midget, National Sprint and Silver Crown feature event at LOR in his career, taking a total of three USAC Sprint wins there in 2006-07-11. This past June at LOR, Santos was the fastest qualifier in a Must See Racing Sprint Car event at LOR, then finished 2nd in the feature.

The man who won the feature that night in June at LOR was Kody Swanson (Kingsburg, Calif.), who also won in 2011 for his first and still only career USAC National Sprint Car feature win. Like his younger brother Tanner, Kody also possesses five Silver Crown wins at LOR, but none yet in a midget. In seven prior NB4500 starts, all in a midget, the five-time Silver Crown titlist has collected five top-tens, including a 3rd in 2010, 4th in 2008, 5th in 2012, 6th in 2009 and 7th in 2014.

The last time Sprint Cars raced on the .686-mile paved oval on Independence Day weekend in July, Kyle Hamilton (Danville, Ind.) was the winner in an Auto Value Super Sprint Series event. Hamilton, the 2017 Little 500 winner at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway, is also a Silver Crown winner at LOR, taking the win in May of 2019 at the Dave Steele Carb Night Classic. A midget victory at LOR has eluded him thus far, but he has had two solid NB4500 midget results in his career, a 6th in 2013 and an 8th in 2011.

It's been 24 years since Russ Gamester (Peru, Ind.) last made a Night Before the 500 start in 1996. The 1989 USAC National Midget champion made the first of his seven NB4500 starts in 1984 and scored a best of 8th in 1986, both coming in a Midget. The six-time Silver Crown series winner has one of those six victories right at Lucas Oil Raceway back on a Sunday afternoon in 2000.

Billy Wease (Noblesville, Ind.) finished in the 6th position in each of his two LOR Sprint Car starts this year in June with Must See and in July with Auto Value. The 2006 Turkey Night Grand Prix midget winner has made seven career NB4500 midget starts, recording a best of 3rd in 2007 to go along with a pair of 6th place finishes in 2006 and 2010 and a 9th in 2008.

Kyle O'Gara (Beech Grove, Ind.) has been knocking on the door for a victory at LOR throughout his career. His two recent sprint car efforts this year at LOR resulted in a 3rd in June and a 2nd in July. The 2014 USAC Pavement Midget driving champion has been a stalwart at the front of the pack in two career NB4500 starts with a 2nd in 2014 and a 4th in 2013.

Dakoda Armstrong (New Castle, Ind.), a veteran of 133 career NASCAR Xfinity Series starts, was 8th in his June sprint car appearance at LOR. His NB4500 experience in a midget dates to the year 2009 where the 2004 USAC Kenyon Midget champion finished a personal best of 7th in the event in addition to 12th place results in both 2010 and 2011.

Aaron Pierce (Muncie, Ind.) is prepared to make his first NB4500 appearance this Saturday as one of eight drivers to pull double-duty in both sprints and midgets. His last NB4500 appearance came back in 2002 where he finished 9th in the midget feature. Pierce owns 17 career Silver Crown starts at LOR with seven top-five finishes.

Derek Bischak (Angola, Ind.), made his NB4500 debut an impressive one, finishing 3rd in his lone midget start in the event in 2014. Bischak, a past ESPN The Magazine academic all-district honoree in track and field at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, finished 9th in a sprint car run at LOR this past July.

Nick Hamilton (Danville, Ind.), brother of Kyle Hamilton, earned a top-five finish in Auto Value Sprint Car action in July at LOR. Nick finished 4th in his lone previous NB4500 start, in a midget, in 2014. Chris Neuenschwander (New Haven, Ind.), meanwhile, was the 5th place finisher in June's sprint at LOR. Tyler Roahrig (Mishawaka, Ind.) was a 4th place finisher in June at LOR and won back in July in sprint car action at Anderson.

Experienced LOR combatants who are making their NB4500 debuts Saturday in the sprint car are Tony Main (Farmland, Ind.), 8th in July at LOR; Justin Harper (Denver, Ind.), 9th in June at LOR; Ronnie Wuerdeman (Cincinnati, Ohio), 10th in June at LOR; Chris Jagger (Warsaw, Ind.), 10th in July at LOR; Brian Vaughn (Shirley, Ind.), 18th in June and 13th in July at LOR; Gary Dunkle (Lincoln, Neb.), 23rd in June and 17th in July at LOR; and Christian Koehler (South Bend, Ind.), 26th in June at LOR.

They'll be joined by fellow NB4500 first-timers Cord Ehrhart (Antwerp, Ohio), Joey Vallone (Crestwood, Ill.) and Nick Landon (Dorr, Mich), part of the famed Landon racing family out of the Wolverine State.

A combined 50 cars have already pre-entered for the 70th running of the Night Before the 500, featuring a USAC non-points special event for both sprint cars and midgets in the famed race to be run on Saturday, August 22, at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Ind.

The tradition is being renewed at the .686-mile paved oval west of Indianapolis after the event has been on hiatus since its last edition run in 2014. Midgets have been a staple of the event, dating back to its origins in 1946 at the former 16th Street Speedway, across the street from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The festivities begin on Saturday, August 22, with pit gates/credentials opening at 7am ET. Spectator gates open at 10am, Midget practice from 10am-10:55am, Sprint Car practice 1 from 11am-11:55am, Midget practice 2 from noon-12:55pm, Sprint Car Practice 2: 1pm-1:55pm, Midget practice 3 from 2pm to 2:55pm, Sprint Car practice 3 from 3pm-3:55pm before a break at 4pm.

Action resumes with Midget qualifying from 4:30pm-5:55pm, Sprint Car qualifying from 6pm-7:25pm, then opening ceremonies from 7pm-7:30pm, followed by racing action that culminates with the $5,000-to-win Midget feature and the $10,000-to-win Sprint Car feature.

Tickets are $25 for ages 12 and up, $5 for ages 5-11 and free for ages 4 and under. Tickets can be ordered at https://nhra.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetEventList?groupCode=IINB&linkID=nhra&shopperContext=&caller=&appCode=.

The big racing weekend kicks off Friday, August 21, with the Dave Steele Carb Night Classic featuring USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series, USF2000 and Indy Pro 2000. Pits open at noon ET, spectator gates open at 3pm, Silver Crown practice from 3pm-3:40pm, USF2000 practice from 3:55pm-4:15pm, Indy Pro 2000 practice from 4:30pm-5:45pm, a break at 4:50pm, Silver Crown qualifying at 5:45pm, USF2000 race at 6:45pm, Indy Pro 2000 race at 7:50pm and the Silver Crown race at 9pm.

THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES

LEVAN MACHINE & TRUCK EQUIPMENT PRESENT 410 SPRINT & MODIFIED DOUBLEHEADER. . . . .

RYAN TAYLOR EYES FIRST THUNDER WIN WHEN TONY STEWART’S ALL-STAR CIRCUIT OF CHAMPIONS INVADE GRANDVIEW THURSDAY, AUGUST 27

BECHTELSVILLE, PA AUGUST 18, 2020 . . . . . . The 410 Sprints will make their final visit of the year at Grandview Speedway on Thursday night, August 27 when Tony Stewart’s Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions team up with the 358 Modifieds as part of the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presented by Levan Machine & Truck Equipment.

Both divisions will compete in qualifying events leading up to the 35 lap Thunder Cup paying $5,000 to win for the 410 Sprint feature and a 30 lap 358 Modified feature paying $3,000 to win. Gates open at 5 PM with race time set for 7:30 PM.

One 410 sprint driver looking to claim his first Thunder on the Hill victory is Ryan Taylor of nearby Mertztown, PA. Taylor started his racing career in the open-wheel karts at Oreville, and he credits his Dad for teaching him the basics. He progressed his driving career advancing to the slingshots then on to the modifieds at Grandview and Bridgeport. Somewhat exhausted of the weekly repairs needed to a modified, at age 18, Ryan made a move to the 410 sprints, and in Ryan’s words, “It was the best racing decision I’ve made yet!”

“Grandview is the track I grew up at, going there as a child, it holds a special place to me.” Taylor continued, “ I’ve raced modifieds at Grandview for a season and got to know many familiar faces.”

“To me, Grandview is one of my favorite places to run a sprint car. I think the track configuration provides a very fast-paced race with lots of traffic and passing, which is great for the fans and drivers alike.” Ryan describes Grandview this way, " It’s the right length straightaways for the right width corners with the right banking to provide wide-open racing early on at high speeds, with slick fun to slide on the surface at the end of the night."

Sponsors play a big part in the on-going success of this race team, and Ryan is quick to recognize Abreu Vineyards, CP=Carrillo, and Wilwood Racin. “Winning the Thunder Cup would be a huge win for myself, there are a lot of family and friends that come to Grandview to watch us race, and it would be nice to pick up a win there in this race. There sure would be a lot of celebrating going on!”

Winning will be no easy task with Aaron Reutzel of Clute, TX, in the field. He won the last two All Star events at Grandview, he is the defending All Series Champion and currently leads the 2020 point chase. Expected entries include Cory Eliason of Valisia, CA, Paul McMahan of Nashville, TN, Zeb Wise of Angola, IN, and Josh Baughman, Odessa, TX. Some home town favorites looking to chase the $5,000 first prize include Freddie Rahmer, Danny Dietrich, Anthony Macri, Alan Krimes, Brandon Rahmer, Brock Zearfoss, and Kyle Reinhardt, to name a few.

The thrilling 358 NASCAR Modifieds are the charm of Grandview Speedway every Saturday night. They never disappoint the fans when they are on a Thunder on the Hill Racing Series event. Very few tracks present shows with two star-studded divisions. After a series of qualifying events, the Modifieds will battle in a 30 lap feature paying $3,000 to win. The talent-filled field is expected to include Craig VonDohren, Duane Howard, Jeff Strunk, Brett Kressley, Rick Laubach, Doug Manmiller, Jared Umbenhauer, Mike Gular, Colt Harris, Kevin Hirthler and Mike Lisowski.

This big night of racing is presented by Levan Machine & Truck Equipment, a full-service machine, and truck shop, as well as a custom fabrication shop located in nearby Fleetwood, PA, just outside of Reading. Check out their full line of truck and trailer equipment, including snowplows and salt spreaders. To learn about their capabilities, including CNC machining, complete driveline service, MIG, TIG, and Stick welding, check out our web site at www.levanmachine.com.

For the August 27 event, adult admission tickets are $30, Children 6 to 11 are $10, Children 5 and under will be admitted free. The pit fee is $40, and a license is not required.

Advance tickets are available by calling 443 513 4456. Please speak clearly and provide your first and last name and the number of tickets you need.
