Carson Macedo goes back-to-back in the Empire State; Earns first-ever All Star victory at Weedsport Speedway

WEEDSPORT, N.Y. (June 11, 2018) - Just 24 hours after earning his first Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory of the 2018 season, Lemoore, California’s Carson Macedo dominated his way back to All Star victory lane, this time during action at the state-of-the-art Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, N.Y., on Sunday, June 10. Much like his feature campaign on Saturday evening at Stateline Speedway, Macedo led all 35 circuits during main event competition at Weedsport, clinching a second consecutive $5,000 payday, as well as a third-career All Star victory.

To make things more impressive, Macedo crossed under the final checkers eight seconds ahead of eventual runner-up finisher, Paul McMahan, lapping up to the 15th position in the running order. Danny Dietrich finished third just behind McMahan, followed by Aaron Reutzel and a hard charging Parker Price-Miller, who advanced 13 positions to earn the evening’s MSD Performance Hard Charger Award.

The Weedsport Speedway appearance was a first-ever for the All Star Circuit of Champions.

“This is pretty unbelievable. What a weekend for this team,” Carson Macedo explained in Weedsport Speedway victory lane. “Tim and Cindy Norman, Joe Gaerte; they all do such an amazing job with this race team. The car keeps getting better and better. Our plan was to come to New York and be competitive all weekend, but to win two straight is pretty special. This is a perfect transition into Ohio Sprint Speedweek.”

Brock Zearfoss led the field to green on Sunday night at Weedsport Speedway. Unfortunately, Zearfoss found himself facing the wrong direction after entering turn one during the initial start, also collecting Dave Blaney. With two cars involved, the feature field was criss-crossed allowing Aaron Reutzel to inherit the top spot with Carson Macedo to his outside. Macedo took advantage of his inherited starting position and jumped to an early lead right from the drop of the green.

Although distracted by two additional cautions, one on lap 4 and another on lap 20, Macedo maintained control, actually extending his lead to just shy of two seconds by the time the feature’s second caution appeared on lap 20.

Perhaps, the most challenging segment of the 35-lapper took shape with just over ten circuits remaining. Relying on the very topside of the speedway to navigate the 4/10-mile, dirt oval, Macedo was faced with traffic stacking up two and three cars wide, ultimately forcing Macedo to rely on the bottom, as well as the middle to maneuver through lapped cars. Although challenging as first, Macedo’s technique through traffic was flawless, instantly bouncing back to a four second lead with five circuits remaining, increasing to eight by lap 35.

With their first New York swing of the season in the books, the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will switch gears and begin preparations for a nine-day campaign in the Buckeye State. The 2018 edition of Ohio Sprint Speedweek will feature nine straight days of sprint car competition, comprised of eight different facilities throughout all four corners of Ohio. Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe will host Tony Stewart’s All Stars twice during Ohio Sprint Speedweek, with Attica Raceway Park, Eldora Speedway, Waynesfield Raceway Park, Wayne County Speedway, Sharon Speedway, Muskingum County Speedway, and Limaland Motorsports Park each hosting the Series once.

More information pertaining to Ohio Sprint Speedweek will be posted during the next few days. Fans are encouraged to stay alert online and on social media.

THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES

12TH ANNUAL USAC EASTERN STORM OPENS AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY THURSDAY, JUNE 14, SIX NIGHTS, THREE STATES OF NON-WING RACING PLANNED

The tradition of USAC Non-wing Sprint Car racing in Berks County goes all the way back to 1956 when Tommy Hinnershitz , a resident of Berks County won the first three USAC events held at the Reading (PA) Fairgrounds.

Hinnershitz, known as the Flying Farmer, raced without a wing, no roll cage and for many years, wore a leather helmet. He was a pioneer in the sport, a legend. A man whose handshake was as firm at the end of his career, as it was the first time his fingers embraced the steering wheel of a sprint car.

Later in life, Hinnershitz returned to the Reading Fairgrounds, a property then occupied by a Mall, to take part in the Annual Reading Racing Reunion & Car Show. Hinnershitz enjoyed the fan fun event annually until his passing in 1999. Hinnershitz competed in the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950 on dirt, asphalt and yes, the board tracks.

Since those three USAC consecutive victories by Hinnershitz, the roster of drivers who have won USAC features in Berks County is a who's who of auto racing.

The Berks County half-mile saw drivers of the likes of Johnny Thomson, Eddie Sachs, A.J. Foyt, Jim Hurtibise, Roger McCluskey, Jud Larson, Greg Weld, Red Riegel, Johnny Rutherford, Bobby Unser, Larry Dickson, Gary Bettenhausen, Bruce Walkup, Toby Tobias, Lee Kunzman, Larry "Boom Boom" Cannon, Pancho Carter, Lee Osborne, Ron Shuman, Gus Linder and Paul Pitzer collect a very charmed Berks County victory.

In 1979, USAC left Berks County for the final time as the Reading Fairgrounds closed. Well, until 2007.

In 2007, Bob Miller, who co-promoted the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series at Grandview Speedway with track owners Bruce and Theresa Rogers, had a thought -- to bring USAC non-wing racing back to Berks County. Local businessman Gene Franckowiak brought Miller and USAC Race Organizer Greg Stabb together to open discussions. Miller had a face-to-face meeting with Stabb in 2006 at the Larwanceburg, IN Speedway and that marked the birth of the USAC Eastern Storm.

Levi Jones won that first event in 2007 at Grandview Speedway and went on to win the first Eastern Storm Championship. USAC was back -- and alive and well in Berks County. Since that time, Cole Whitt won the Eastern Storm Title in 2008 and 2009; Jones returned to take the championship in 2010 and 2011. Bryan Clauson scored championships in 2012 and 2013 followed by Brady Bacon in 2014, Robert Ballou in 2015, Clauson again in 2016, and Chris Windom just last year, in 2017.

And now we gear up for the 12th Annual AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series Eastern Storm, opening at the Grandview Speedway on Thursday night, June 14, and continuing at Williams Grove on Friday, June 15, Port Royal on Saturday, June 16, BAPS Motor Speedway on Sunday, June 17 Bridgeport Speedway on Monday, June 18 and the Weedsport Speedway on Tuesday night, June 19.

The Eastern Storm of 2018 is boasting the most expansive schedule in the history of the series with six events in three different states for the first time in USAC's 63 year history.

Grandview Speedway and the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series in Bechtelsville, PA have been part of the Eastern Storm since it's inception in 2007 and is the only track that can make that claim.

Grandview is a high-banked, one-third mile oval that is the perfect venue for the non-wing warriors. USAC at Grandview is a must-see show and offers slide jobs, plenty of rooster tails and rub rails, a little wheel banging and a bounce or two off the tracks outside boiler plate is just the norm.

Joining the USAC Non-wing sprints at Grandview are the popular 358 Modifieds, racing for a $3,000 payday to win the 30 lap feature. For USAC, the 40 lap Jesse Hockett Classic will pay $6,000 to the winner.

General Admission ticket pricing for Thursday, June 14 is $30 for Adults, Children 6-11 are $10 and Kids 5 & under are FREE! Pit Admission pricing is $35.

Advance tickets are on sale now and may be ordered by calling 443-513-4456. Please provide your name and the number of tickets requested. Tickets may be picked up and paid for on race night after 3:30 PM. Advance ticket holders may enter the grandstands at 4:30 PM, one-half hour prior to the sale of General Admission tickets.

The Pioneer Pole Buildings Mobile Sales Unit will be on display in the mid-way along with all of the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series mainstay promotions including the Low Down & Dirty Radio Show pre-race Meet and Greet, pit area tours, the Inside/Out Experience - where fans can watch hot laps from the infield, Joe 'The Pizza Dude' offering up free pizzas to the rowdiest fans, give-a-ways, and appearances by Miss Thunder on the Hill.

Grandstand Gates open at 5:00 PM and Racing starts at 7:30 PM

Carson Macedo outruns Greg Hodnett for Stateline All Star victory

BUSTI, N.Y. (June 9, 2018) - Although forced to fend off challenges by one of Pennsylvania’s finest, Lemoore, California’s Carson Macedo earned his way to the top of the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 feature podium on Saturday night at New Stateline Speedway, leading all 30 circuits around the 1/3-mile oval to score the first All Star victory since Lee Osborne accomplished the same feat in 1970.

The $5,000 payday, Macedo’s first All Star triumph of the 2018 season, increased his career win total to two with the traveling Series, also scoring a feature win during action at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway exactly one year prior on June 9, 2017.

Pennsylvania Posse invader Greg Hodnett chased Macedo to the final checkers in Busti, N.Y., followed by six-time and defending Series champion Chad Kemenah, recent Outlaw Speedway winner Paul McMahan, and Tony Stewart.

“Man, I feel like we’ve been close so many times. It feels really good to be standing up here,” Carson Macedo explained in victory lane, driver of the familiar Lucas Oil/Slade Shock Technologies/Tarlton and Son Inc./No. 3G. “We’ve been consistently finishing inside the top-five and top-ten, but winning is what we are working for. With Ohio Sprint Speedweek right around the corner, I can’t think of a better time to get hot.”

Utilizing his outside-pole position, Macedo was able to earn the early jump, quickly moving ahead of Greg Hodnett and Chad Kemenah as the field drove by the flagstand for the first time. Besides periods of heavy traffic and eventual pressure by Greg Hodnett, a pair of cautions, one on lap six for a spinning Aaron Reutzel, and another on lap nine for a slowing John Garvin, were the only two distractions during Macedo’s march at the front of the running order.

Traffic appeared for the first time just before the midpoint of the 30-lap program giving Hodnett an opportunity to eat away at Macedo’s built advantage. As traffic intensified, so did the battle for the top spot; Macedo relying heavily on the very topside of the speedway while Hodnett worked the bottom. A miscalculated slide job effort on lap 22 was Hodnett’s first, true attempt at getting by the California native. Macedo was able to counter, immediately increasing speed and stretching his advantage back to nearly two seconds.

By the time the final checkers flew, Macedo’s advantage was up and over two seconds, crossing over the start-finish line by a margin of victory equalling 2.176 seconds over Hodnett.

“Traffic made things a little tricky. I tried my best to keep up with track changes and race where I felt the most comfortable. As traffic got worse, I was forced to move around quite a bit,” Macedo continued. “When Greg (Hodnett) took a look under me, I knew I had to turn it up a little bit. His move forced me to drive a little bit harder and pick up my pace. I wasn’t sure where he was at the end, but I didn’t see him again.”

The New York triple-header will come to a close on Sunday evening, June 10, when the All Star Circuit of Champions travel to the north side of the Finger Lakes for a first-ever visit to Weedsport Speedway. Padding an impressive All Star stat sheet in the Empire State, Weedsport Speedway will become the 14th track in the state of New York to host All Star Circuit of Champions competition.

Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, N.Y., will open pit gates at 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 10. A pit sweep will take shape at 3 p.m., followed by the All Star drivers meeting at 5 p.m. All Star hot laps are scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m. Additional information can be found online at www.weedsportspeedway.com.

Donny Schatz Pockets $40,000 with AGCO Jackson Nationals Win

JACKSON, MN – June 9, 2018 – When big money is on the line, Donny Schatz and the Tony Stewart Racing No.15 team find an extra gear and that was the case on the final night of the AGCO Jackson Nationals at Jackson Motorplex. Schatz came from seventh and prevented a Jason Johnson sweep of the weekend, overtaking the Eunice, LA native on Lap 18 to capture the $40,000 prize. Johnson was resilient but settled for second with Brian Brown completing the podium.

After winning the first two nights of the AGCO Jackson Nationals, Jason Johnson won the Sears Craftsman Dash, earning the pole for the 40-lap Feature.

The Feature got off to a bumpy start with Ian Madsen bicycling in turn one and coming to a stop with rear end damage. Jason Johnson got the jump on the start and led the opening two laps before the lone Red Flag on the evening flew after Daryn Pittman received contact while running in the top five and slowed significantly into turn one leaving Cory Eliason nowhere to go, ending both of their evenings.

On the ensuing restart, Donny Schatz charged up to second only to be negated by a caution for Brad Sweet, who came to a stop backwards in turn two while running third. Sweet was able to make repairs and return to the rear of the field.

When action resumed, Johnson continued to lead as Schatz disposed of Brian Brown for second and set his eyes on Johnson.

Johnson continued to set a torrid pace on the cushion and reached lapped traffic by Lap 8. The majority of the slower cars were on the cushion, slowing Johnson’s pace and allowing the Nine-Time Series Champion to close in. Schatz began reeling in Johnson and made his move underneath for the lead on Lap 18. Once he took command, it was clear Schatz was the class of the field.

The final caution of the night flew on Lap 24, bunching the field together, putting Johnson on Schatz bumper. Schatz motored away on the restart and was proficient in traffic.

Johnson stayed with Schatz as the duo navigated traffic as rubber became more prominent on the racing surface. Johnson took a brief look underneath Schatz entering turn one with less than 5 laps to go and continued to close back in, crossing the line .637 seconds behind the Fargo, ND driver.

Schatz, who described himself as non-existent during the first two nights, came into the evening 11th in Jackson Nationals points and started the Feature from 7th.

“This race team is what the difference is,” Schatz said in Victory Lane when prompted about the improvement throughout the weekend. “We changed up a lot of little things and I felt as good as I have all weekend during Hot Laps tonight and it showed then and now,” Schatz added.

“This is awesome. The improvements here to the facility, grandstands and racing surface are amazing,” Schatz said after the race.

Jason Johnson finished second in the big one but established a new level of speed for his team during the AGCO Jackson Nationals. “When it comes to big races, Donny isn’t going to make any mistakes. Hats off to the track crew all weekend dealing with all the rain and thanks to everyone in the stands for sticking it out,” Johnson said.

Brian Brown completed the podium and echoed both Schatz and Johnson’s statements about the job Jackson Motorplex did this weekend. “This is an awesome event, they gave us a great track all weekend. We were pretty good,” Brown said before thanking the large Jackson crowd.

David Gravel finished fourth with Logan Schuchart completing the top five. Dominic Scelzi scored KSE Hard Charger honors coming from the Last Chance Showdown to finish 14th, although it was Brad Sweet putting on the passing clinic, charging back to seventh after going to the rear on Lap 2.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series continues its 40th Anniversary Season with a doubleheader in North Dakota starting Friday at River Cities Speedway and concluding Sunday at Nodak Speedway in Minot, ND. If you can’t make it to the track, be sure to watch every lap LIVE on DIRTVision.com!

SUNSHINE SWEEPS HIS WAY TO KNOXVILLE REDEMPTION

By: Richie Murray - USAC Media

Knoxville, Iowa.....June 9, 2018 - One year ago, Tyler Courtney rode out one of the wildest flips of the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car season when the series visited Knoxville Raceway.

Three-hundred-seventy-one days later, the next chapter of Courtney's Knoxville story played out like a fairy-tale as he swept each and every challenge he confronted: fast qualifying time. Check. Heat race win. Check. Winning the 30-lap main event. Check. Victory lane. Another check, but one he was able to hoist high over his head after collecting his series-leading fourth feature win of the year Saturday night on the famed half-mile.

However, Courtney acknowledges that what happened last year actually did weigh on his mind, but it became a factor he was able to turn into a motivator rather than an obstacle to overcome.

"Obviously, it's in the back of your mind every time you get up close to that cushion," Courtney admitted. "When it gets a little tight, you have flashbacks to last year, but you can't let it affect you too much. You've got a job to do and we did that tonight. I was able to redeem myself because I didn't put myself in as bad of a position as last year and it worked out. I think we definitely had a winning car last year, but I know we had a winning car tonight. I wanted to make sure it happened, and I did everything in my power to keep all four wheels on the ground."

Starting sixth in a stacked lineup, though, made things challenging for the Indianapolis, Indiana native as 2011 Knoxville USAC Sprint Car winner Brady Bacon checked out on the 24-car field from his pole starting position, quickly constructing a half-straightaway lead in the opening laps.

Meanwhile, Courtney was slicing through the field with the precision of a Ron Popeil Ginsu knife, splitting between Chase Stockon and Chad Boespflug in one swing entering the third turn on lap four to move from fifth to third.

Already meeting up with heavy lapped traffic in the first third of the race, the top-three ripped the top in synch as they separated themselves from the competition. Courtney attempted a big slider on Leary between turns one and two that didn't quite have enough mustard to achieve, sending Courtney a tad over the cushion, costing him ground as he wiped his brow and regathered himself and his Clauson Marshall Newman Racing/Priority Aviation - Competition Suspension, Inc./Spike/Rider Chevy.

'I've gotten to win at Terre Haute and Knoxville this year, which is something I thought I'd probably never do. Winning at Knoxville is not easy to do. To get to do this with the team I'm with, this family and this crew and to get to do the things were doing this year, it's pretty special. To do this in front of a big crowd like we had tonight is even cooler. This one goes up there with the 'Hulman' and the 'Smackdown.'' - Tyler Courtney

On the 18th lap, Courtney reloaded and tried the same maneuver again in turn one to no avail. Mired in traffic heading into turn three, Leary got stuck in the meat grinder of gridlock briefly, then pointed his ride to the bottom at the exit of four as he fought to hold off the hard-charging Courtney. Courtney then aimed for the bottom of turn one and slid up to the berm in front of Leary to snag the second position.

A lap later, Courtney hunted down Bacon, squared him up in turn one and slid by to take the lead, said 'sayonara' and immediately pulled away down the stretch for a 2.5-plus second victory over Leary, Bacon, Justin Grant and Brody Roa.

"I got myself in trouble last year by being impatient," Courtney recalled. "I knew this year that it's a longer race than you anticipate. I just rode, rode, rode a little bit behind those guys, got to lapped traffic and I knew I was going to have to do something drastically different than what they were doing because of how hard it was to pass. I was able to stick the bottom there in one and two and get by C.J., then slid up in front of Brady in one and two."

Courtney became the tenth different driver to win in ten appearances by the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars since the series' debut in 1968. It's an honor he doesn't take lightly and considers it one of the highlights of his burgeoning career resume.

"This is one of most historical tracks we go to," Courtney said. "I've gotten to win at Terre Haute and Knoxville this year, which is something I thought I'd probably never do. Winning at Knoxville is not easy to do. To get to do this with the team I'm with, this family and this crew and to get to do the things were doing this year, it's pretty special. To do this in front of a big crowd like we had tonight is even cooler. This one goes up there with the 'Hulman' and the 'Smackdown.'"

In the process, Courtney surpassed what had seemed like an untouchable record of sorts over the past five decades: Gary Bettenhausen's 30-lap USAC Sprint Car track record at Knoxville, which Courtney defeated in 10 minutes and 45 seconds, nearly 19 seconds faster than the mark set by the 1969 and 1971 series champ.

"That's pretty cool stat right there," Courtney exclaimed. "Gary was one of the greatest to ever do this. To be able to break that is pretty dang special. That might be as cool as winning the feature!"

Contingency award winners Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway included Tyler Courtney (Simpson Race Products First Heat Winner & Saldana Racing Products Clean Sweep), Justin Grant (Competition Suspension, Inc. Second Heat Winner), Chris Windom (Chalk Stix/Indy Race Parts Third Heat Winner), Dave Darland (KSE Racing Products Hard Charger), Josh Hodges (Wilwood Brakes 13th Place Finisher), Dave Darland (Roger & Barb Tapy 13th Fastest Qualifier).

Winner Sammy Swindell (Bobby Thomas Photo)

Swindell Kicks At Route 66 With The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series

Bryan Hulbert - AMARILLO, Texas (June 9, 2018) Fighting through a rain delay that kept track crews busy all night, Route 66 Motor Speedway was lightning fast with Tennessee's Sammy Swindell wrestling the A.G. Rains owned No. 3 to victory with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com in round-two of the ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek.

"I feel really blessed to be here. There's not too many people my age who get to come out here and do this or be this competitive, so I'm grateful to the Lord for that. Looking forward to a lot more wins and it's great that everyone stayed, they did the best they could with this track and made it pretty fast at the end," stated Swindell who at 62 years old picked up his 16th career win with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com.

Nearly seeing his A-Feature end as it started, the first attempt at green saw Swindell and Colt Treharn make contact going into the first turn; ending the night for Colt with his front axle in two pieces. Able to continue, the contact left Sammy with his hands full the remainder of the 30-lap event as the right rear shock was ripped from the lower arm along with a damaged Jacobs Ladder.

"The incident we had on the start, I didn't know the guy was still there, but we broke the shock and bent the ladder up. The car was good, just a little bit tight, but when I got into traffic it was real tight," commented Swindell. "Even being broke, the car still rolled good."

Keeping any challenge at bay through several restarts, traffic, and dirty air played havoc on Swindell, but it was not enough to allow anyone a chance to advance. Winning by 2.841 seconds, the runner-up position went to Matt Covington who came to the line with Travis Rilat in tow. Rolling from the 12th starting spot, restarts were pivotal for the BDS Motorsports No. 1. Opening his entry into turn one, Rilat would diamond to the bottom and rocket down the backstretch, clearing three and four drivers at a time before finally settling into third, despite several holes in the right sideboard from Colt Treharn's front axle.

Coming from eighth, Blake Hahn crossed fourth with Harli White posting her best finish of the 2018 season in fifth. Ripping through the field from 18th, series point's leader Sam Hafertepe, Jr. was the night's CP-Carrillo Hard Charger with a run to sixth. Tony Bruce, Jr. in seventh was trailed by Scott Bogucki from 14th. Skylar Gee was ninth with Jamie Ball moving up six spots to tenth.

The Lucas Oil ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek heads for the Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas for action on Tuesday, June 12. Track information, ticket prices, and directions can be found at http://www.devilsbowl.com.
