PROVIDENCE, RI February 6, 2011 . . . Ted Christopher likes this indoor racing gig.
He proved why Saturday night as he captured the TQ-Midget Coffee Cup at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
The victory was Christopher’s second consecutive in as many weeks as he won the Gambler’s Classic in Atlantic City, N.J.
With his most recent victory, which was his fifth in 10 outings in TQ-Midget action, Christopher of Plainville, Conn., captured more than $9,000. In addition to the winnings in Atlantic City, N.J., and Providence, R.I., he won the Leonard J. Sammons Jr Indoor Series for having the best overall finishers over the past two weeks.
“This is absolutely great,” Christopher said. “You can’t ask for a better way to start the racing season.”
Christopher topped Ryan Smith of Kunkletown, Pa., in the 40-lap race. Tim Buckwalter of Douglassville, Pa., was third, followed by Stewart Friesen of Niagara-on-the-Lakes, Ont., and Mike Lichty of Innerkip, Ont.
“It means a lot to win in these cars and at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center,” Christopher said. “Just last two years ago, we were all anxious about finally having a race in Rhode Island and to win a race in the northeast with all the race fans is pretty special.”
Christopher started fifth and really did not pose a threat until the 10th lap.
Billy Pauch led the first four circuits before Lou Cicconi Jr took over on a restart.
As the cars started to maneuver through lapped traffic on lap 15, Christopher used the slower cars and some aggressive moves to generate the lead from Cicconi.
When the race went to caution on lap 19, Cicconi showed his displeasure with Christopher.
“I guess he wasn’t too happy,” Christopher said. “He pulled up beside me and gave me a gesture with his arm and he bumped me a few times, but he thanked me after I won.”
Cicconi fell from the runner-up spot on lap 31 when his engine overheated.
Smith, who secured a ride for the Coffee Cup on Tuesday, did his best to get Christopher over the final nine circuits but nothing materialized.
“It was good we got to stick with him there at the end,” Smith said. “I figured he would be gone.”
Double heat events were run as qualifiers. Billy Pauch won his two heat events, while Christopher, Joey Payne, Matt Janisch, Frank Fischer, Friesen and Mike Stefanik had one win each.
Mike Osite and Tim Proctor won the B-Mains.
Bryan Shields of Bethlehem, Pa. won a thrilling 25-lap Champ Kart main as he took the lead with two laps remaining in the main event,
Nick Hadden of Vernon, Conn., was second, followed by DJ Shaw of Center Conway, NH; Mike Perry of Dighton, Mass; and Matt Fenn of West Springfield, Mass.
Double heat events went to Shaw (two), Gavin Soraghon, Gary Putnam Jr, Perry and Hadden.

The Tri-State area surrounding the Phillipsburg Mall in Phillipsburg, New Jersey enjoyed a wealth of great raceways dating back to World War II days and followed into the 50's years and beyond, and with that one of the great racers of the day, local racing ace Carl "Fuzzy' Van Horn cast his dreams, hopes and dollars in the local region not far from the Mall site and began building a dirt track fashioned after the old Pitman-Alcyon Speedway that was closed somewhere around 1960. Van Horn opened the Harmony Speedway in 1963 and then budding racing great great Sammy Beavers captured the initial grand opening night event. While the speedway never enjoyed the success Van Horn envisioned, the legacy of the Harmony race track and the many more speedways in the Tri-State area that hosted racing events, brings each of us to the fourth Annual IRCO Community Federal Credit Union Dirt Track Heroes Car Show set to return to the Phillipsburg Mall in 2011 with opening day set for Sunday, March 6. The show will continue through Saturday, night, March 12. The Phillipsburg Mall, located on Route 22 East in Phillipsburg, NJ is a popular location for this event and will offer a broad variety of race cars on display throughout the course of the week long show. Last year 122 cars from all divisions of racing filled the Mall space as the past, present and future of racing are highlighted in a week long show that celebrates the love each of us has found in attending races and meeting so many good people associated with the sport. With an exciting schedule of events to whet the appetite of any true race fan, large crowds are expected to "over flow" the Phillipsburg Mall. This event is a Mall favorite and one of the leading attractions, drawing record crowds for the week-long event.
The race cars are on display for various reasons. The restored race cars represent the past or as many race fans refer to as the "Golden Era" of racing. While some of the cars in attendance are original works, some of the race cars are replicars, re-created to look much like the racers the legendary drivers drove to glory at one of the many speedways that hosted the events. Those great cars and the saved memories gain much more impact when the fans have the opportunity to chat with many of the drivers who will be making special appearances during the week long event. All historical racing groups including Reading, Flemington, Harmony, Dorney Park and Nazareth will have their memorabilia on display and their scrapbooks open for the fans to take another long look at the glory years of racing and possibly find a picture or two they want to purchase as a keepsake of past glory or racing exploits.
Current day race cars are displayed by race teams to gain for their sponsors additional exposure and create an interest for mall walkers to visit a race track in their area. New cars are displayed for similar reasons, and to also show the new and changing technology of the race cars. You can visit the IRCO Dirt Track Heroes Car Show and on any given night, meet the drivers who pilot these four wheel high powered race cars. Many race tracks participate in this event as a way to distribute their schedules for the coming season and meet and greet their loyal fans and hopefully, make some new fans to attend their racing events.
Hall of Fame driver Carl Van Horn will be at the Mall on special nights to sign autographs and to talk about the 46 seasons he spent behind the wheel of a high powered Modified. His Grandson David will have the family hot rod in the show and will be part of the New Egypt Speedway night at the Mall. From the Flemington group it is reported that Stan "The Man" Ploski will be signing autographs at their display. URC will have representation from talented Jonathan Swanson, Mark Bitner and his Bitner Automotive and Performance sponsored sprinter and up and coming local talent Chris Weiss. Stephanie Stevens, the talented local female racer from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, will have her new TSRS 305 sprinter on hand for the event as she steps into a new phase of her racing career in 2011. "The Negotiator" Ricky Yetter will possibly have both of his race cars on display as the Wilson Boro resident prepares for not only a big season in racing but is running for District Court Judge as well. The "Rieglesville Rocket" Larry Lippincott will have his mount on display after a brilliant season at the Bridegport Speedway where he scored four wins and lost the point title by one single digit. His teammate Frank Dorry will have his car on display as well. Frank was 7th in the final points at Bridgeport a season ago. The "Magic Man" Mike Mammana will have his spruced up hot rod on display during the show. Mike rode the strength of two wins and the point lead into the final night of competition at Big Diamond only to be wrecked early in the event. The Gilmore Brothers, Mark and Brian will have their race cars on display. The New Jersey based brother act will go in separate directions this season as Brian will go after the 600 Wingless title at the Hamlin Speedway while brother Mark will test the waters in ARDC competition as he vies for Rookie of the Year in the series after a championhip season came his way in 2009 at Hamlin and he followed it up with a runner-up performance in 2010. Mark will be aboard a former Drew Heistand race car. More and more drivers will be referenced in upcoming stories as the pieces continue to fall into place for this great annual event.
Entries continue to be accepted to display in the IRCO Dirt Track Heroes Show. More information is available by calling: 443-513-4456 or you may complete the entry form located on the home page of the: www.thunderonthehillracingseries.com web site. Follow the simple instructions posted on the web site to register. Space is available for race cars of all divisions, vendors and race tracks as well.
In the previous events, cars that were on display include big and small block Modifieds, Sportsman, Micro-Sprints, ARDC Midgets, URC Sprints, Late Models, go-karts and a broad variety of vintage and restored race cars. Several race tracks will also use this event as an opportunity to get the word out on their up-coming 2011 racing season. New Egypt, Grandview, Bridgeport, Hamlin, Kutztown, Borger's and Snydersville will again be involved in the 2011 show. The week-long event will set aside one evening to salute the "Stars of Tomorrow" with a special night set aside for the budding young racing talents competing with the many quarter midget clubs in the area.
For the fourth consecutive year, CARQUEST Gasoline Alley and the Pados Brothers will host the nightly events and interviews along with some guest announcers. Bobby Stull, Joel Murns and Justin Beltrame have already signed on to play a part in the show. The taping of the show will be on Sunday, March 6th for a two hour span that will be aired the following evening through WALN at: www.walncableradio.com In 2010, 368 drivers, owners, racing legends and track promoters were interviewed or featured during the nightly activities.
The IRCO Dirt Track Heroes Car Show will again offer a great keepsake event souvenir program book and shirt. The Phillipsburg Mall is open Sunday 11 AM to 6 PM; Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 9 PM.
IRCO Community Federal Credit Union remains the lead show sponsor since the event first opened in 2008. More information on IRCO is available at the company's web site at: www.ircocu.com or please contact Greg Collins via e-mail at: gcollins@ircocu.com

PROVIDENCE, RI February 2, 2011 . . . The driver besting all others last weekend in Atlantic City, NJ., is looking forward to this weekend’s Coffee Cup indoor TQ-Midget race at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn., is looking to add another notch to his TQ-Midget earnings this weekend as he’ll drive the potent No. 13 car this Saturday night. Christopher made a statement in the TQ-Midget class as he dominated the Gambler’s Classic at Boardwalk Hall.
“I am looking forward to getting to Providence,” Christopher said. “We have a fast car and we know it will just as fast in Providence.”
Christopher is one of four different drivers who have previous TQ-Midget victories at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Mike Iles, Mike Lichty and Mike Stefanik are the other victors in TQ-Midget action.
“The event is a must-see for race fans in the northeast,” Christopher said. “This breaks up the monotony of the long winter season. Fans can come and watch some of the tightest and closest racing they’ll ever see.”
Christopher has a monetary incentive to run all-out this Saturday night. If he can win the Coffee Cup, his earnings in a span of a week from racing indoors could be near $10,000. He earned $5,000 last Saturday night in Atlantic City, N.J., and another $3,000 awaits the winner of the Coffee Cup.
Christopher won multiple contingency cash awards and bonuses in Atlantic City, N.J. Also, he leads the Leonard J. Sammons Jr. Indoor Winter Series, which pays the champion an additional $500.
Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I., enters the Coffee Cup as the defending champion. Stefanik thrilled the homestate crowd last season.
“Winning that race was exciting for me,” Stefanik said. “It is pretty right racing, very challenging. There are an array of drivers coming who are very talented and that’s what is so enticing.”
One of those drivers is asphalt Modified standout Woody Pitkat of Stafford Springs, Conn. Pitkat will make his indoor debut at the Coffee Cup.
“It’ll be interesting,” said Pitkat who finished second to Keith Rocco in the ’10 SK-Modified point standings at Stafford Motor Speedway. “It’s another notch in the belt.”
Pitkat will drive a TQ-Midget prepared by indoor expert Lou Cicconi Jr.
“I know that I am getting in a good ride,” Pitkat said. “Lou has a great reputation for putting great cars on the race track and I am anxious for this opportunity.”
In addition, Stewart Friesen, a 25-time winner outdoors last season, found a ride with Mike Iles after a dismal outing in Atlantic City, N.J. The Niagara-on-the-Lakes, Ontario, native is always a top contender indoors.
The one-day event will be action packed with grandstands opening at 6 p.m. Time trials for the TQ-Midgets and Champ Karts will follow at 6:05. Race action, which includes 10 qualifying events, begins at 7, followed by feature events for both divisions.
Tickets for the Coffee Cup are available at the Dunkin’ Donuts box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000.

RACING NEWS THE WAY IT IS MEANT TO BE
Christopher Aces Second Career Gambler’s Classic TQ-Midget Victory
Posted by: | CommentsATLANTIC CITY, NJ January 30, 2011. . . There is a certain pride that comes in winning the Gambler’s Classic TQ-Midget race at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
Just ask Ted Christopher.
The former NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion claimed his second career Gambler’s Classic title Saturday night.
“When you think about this race and the history that is involved in indoor racing in Atlantic City, it really means something special to win it,” said Christopher of Plainville, Conn. “We only come here once a year and we, as a team, put a lot of effort into winning this race so I take a certain amount of great pride with this victory.”
Christopher joins an elite group of Gambler’s Classic winners as he joins Lou Cicconi Jr and Joey Payne as the only two-time winners of the event. Christopher’s only Gambler’s Classic win came in 2009. Christopher visited AC Victory Lane last season, but that victory came in the preliminary main event.
Matt Janisch of Nazareth, Pa., was second in the final tally, while Billy Pauch of Frenchtown, N.J. was third; Billy Wease of Noblesville, Ind., was fourth; and Matt Roselli of Broadheadsville, Pa., was fifth.
Christopher’s victory came in a car that he purchased four years ago from Art Lawshe for a small sum of $4500. The win on Saturday night earned Christopher a cool $5000.
But it was the off-season preparation that provided Christopher with a car that was simply “bad fast.”
The chassis and surrounding bars were tricked out and the car weighed-in at 826 pounds, one pound over the mandatory weight.
“I owe it all to my crew guys and especially to Michael O’Sullivan,” Christopher said. “He worked incredibly hard in getting this car ready for the toll that it can take with the indoor racing.”
Christopher started seventh in the 26-car grid, but he wasted little time in showing his strength.
By lap four of the 40-lap main event, Christopher already worked up to second where he followed Joey Payne.
Payne’s night ended on lap seven when a radius rod broke which sent his car hard into the outside turn three wall. Payne was not injured in the crash.
“I saw the bolt come out on the backstretch,” Payne said. “There wasn’t anything I could have done except to ride it out.”
Christopher was handed the lead spot while Janisch and Ian Cumens followed in the top three.
The scariest crash of the evening occurred on lap 22 when Ryan Smith was clipped into the outside frontstretch wall. His car climbed the wall, rolled on its side and slid down the frontstretch, drilling the turn one wall. He was not injured.
Over the final 18 tours, Christopher dominated the race as he defeated Janisch by five car lengths at the line.
The weekend was near perfect for Christopher as he set a track record on Friday and he won his heat race on Saturday. A damaged left-front wheel sent Christopher to the pits with five laps left on Friday. He was leading at the time.
Christopher, Cicconi, Payne and Smith won heat races, while Ryan Greth and Frank Fischer won B-Mains. Glenn Heverin won the Non-Qualifiers race.
Michael Butler of Milford, N.J. won the Herr’s Snacks Slingshot main event over Tiffany Wambold, Shannon Smith, Mario Page and Jim Houseworth.
Butler earned $1500 for the victory, his first in Atlantic City and he dedicated the win to his grandfather Oliver.
Modified ace Rick Laubach won the B-Main.
Norman Hynes of Lithicum, Md., earned $1500 for claiming the Champ Kart feature event. Hynes led the entire 25-lap main event en route to scoring his first career win in Atlantic City.
Ryan Kendall was second, followed by TJ Laro, Eric Zeh and Donnie Nale.
Kevin Orlando won the B-Main.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR on Wednesday announced that it has added a wild-card element to setting the Chase for the Sprint Cup field and it has simplified its points system for 2011, making it easier for fans, competitors and the industry to understand.
While the 12-driver Chase field remains intact, the final two spots will be determined by the number of victories during the first 26 races.
The top 10 in points following Race No. 26 -- the "cutoff" race -- continue to earn Chase berths.
Positions 11 and 12 are "wild-card" qualifiers and will go to non-top-10-ranked drivers with the most victories, as long as they're ranked in the top 20 in points. The top 10 Chase drivers will continue to be seeded based on victories during the first 26 races, with each win worth three bonus points. The wild-card drivers will not receive bonus points for wins and will be seeded 11th and 12th, respectively. It's a move aimed toward rewarding winning and consistency during the regular season.
NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France made the announcements at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C., during the Sprint Media Tour.
"The fans tell us that winning matters the most with them, so we're combining the tradition of consistency in our sport with the excitement that comes along with winning," France said. "This makes every race count leading into the 26th race of the season at Richmond, when we set the field for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup."
The new points system -- which applies to all NASCAR national series -- will award points in one-point increments. As an example, in the Cup Series, race winners will earn 43 points, plus three bonus points for the victory. Winners also can earn an extra point for leading a lap and leading the most laps, bringing their total to a possible maximum of 48 points.
All other drivers in a finishing order will be separated by one-point increments. A second-place finisher will earn 42 points, a third-place driver 41 points, and so on. A last-place finisher -- 43rd place -- earns one point. In the Camping World Truck Series, the last-place finisher receives eight points, to account for that series' 36-driver race field.
"Many of our most loyal fans don't fully understand the points system we have used to date," said France, referencing the system that has been in use since 1975. "So, we are simplifying the points system to one that is much easier to understand. Conceptually, it is comparable to our previous system, but it is easier to follow."
During his remarks Wednesday night, France reflected on the outstanding competition the sport enjoyed in 2010 and expected to see that high caliber of racing to continue once the green flag drops for the 53rd running of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 20.
"NASCAR enters 2011 with positive momentum and a great sense of excitement and optimism," France said. "We're extremely excited for the launch of the season. Leading the season off with Daytona, Phoenix and Las Vegas, we believe our fans are in store for some of the best racing the sport has to offer."
Other competitive enhancements announced Wednesday:
Pick a Series -- Drivers in all three national series now must select the series where they'll compete for a drivers' championship. Drivers still may compete in multiple series and help their teams win owners' titles in series where they're not competing for a drivers' title. The move helps spotlight young talent in the Nationwide and Truck series.
New Qualifying Procedure -- The qualifying order will be set based upon slowest-to-fastest practice speeds.
Inclement Weather Qualifying -- If bad weather cancels qualifying, the final starting lineup will be determined by practice speeds. The same rule book procedures will be used to determine eligibility to start a race. If weather cancels practice sessions, then the starting lineup will be set by points, per the rule book.
Tire Rules Revision -- Cup teams now are allowed five sets of tires for practice and qualifying instead of six. They must return four of those sets to Goodyear in order to receive their race allotment, and may keep one set of practice/qualifying tires. Tire allotments for race weekends will vary according to historical performance data.
Closed Loop Fueling System -- Introduced in the Truck Series, this goes into effect for all three national series in 2011. It combines a more efficient fueling system with the elimination of the catch-can man, considered the most "vulnerable" pit-crew member. Teams now will use six, rather than seven, over-the-wall pit-crew members.
Evolution of Cup Car -- NASCAR continues to work with the manufacturers and teams to enhance the look of the Cup Series car. The cars have new fronts this season and the body makeover will continue to help appeal to fans and aid manufacturer identity.

BERTLING READY TO REHASH SOME GOOD MEMORIES OF BOARDWALK HALL
69 Year Old Set To Race In Gambler’s Classic Events
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ January 25, 2011 . . . Jack Bertling isn’t one to gloat over the number of wins he has at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
He’s old school.
The checkered flags collected over the years were a product of what he did as a race car driver. The details are forgotten.
So when asked how many victories he collected over the years, Bertling, 69, answered in a matter-of-fact tone.
“I don’t really know, but I know it was a few times,” Bertling said. “I think my first might have been in 1969 and my last one was in 1979, but I don’t know how many total wins I have in Atlantic City.”
For the record, Bertling, a former New Jersey resident who now resides in Kannapolis, N.C., has five wins in Atlantic City, and he will return to the track this weekend for the Gambler’s Classic as he’ll drive a well prepared car that was formerly driven by Donnie Adams
“I always loved that race track,” Bertling said. “Man, we could fly around it. It had a great feel to it. Atlantic City. … my, I loved racing there.
“It’s not the same as it is now, you know. It used to be a lot bigger. We would actually vanish from the fans when we were on the straight stretches, because we went underneath the bleachers. Let me tell you, that place was really cool.”
Today, the ice hockey rink is transformed into a racing surface. When Bertling was racing indoors, Boardwalk Hall hosted many activities including the Liberty Bowl college football game.
“It was so big that they could play football in there,” Bertling said. “In fact, they even offered a money prize if someone could punt and throw a ball and hit the roof. I even once saw a helicopter in that building.”
The racing surface has been trimmed from the days when Bertling zipped around it, but there is still a common denominator that you still have to be aggressive behind the wheel.
“I am sure that hasn’t changed,” Bertling said. “I haven’t seen a race at Boardwalk Hall in two years, but I am sure you have to be up on the wheel.”
Bertling’s first time behind the wheel will come this Friday.
“I’d like to be competing in the practice session on Thursday, but I don’t believe we can pull it off,” Bertling said. “We’ll just have to be ready and get some practice time on Friday.”
It’s not like Bertling needs the practice.
He might be a bit rusty, but his experience and expertise of racing TQ-Midgets speaks volumes and will help when the engines are fired.
In fact, Bertling was so good in his time that he earned the nickname “Black Jack.”
“I got it from a promoter at Pine Brook Speedway,” Bertling said. “A lot of people didn’t like me and one night they had this deal at Pine Brook.
“I went there and the fans in the grandstands were wearing either blue or yellow shirts. It was incredible. I was like, ‘What the devil is going on?’”
Bertling was, in fact, the reason for the promotion.
“The blue shirts had I love Jack Bertling writing on them, while the yellow shirts had I hate Jack Bertling on them,” Bertling recalled.
It gets a bit worse.
“Before the feature, I went to walk on the track and the track crew said, ‘No Jack, hold on.’
“Out of nowhere, a stretched limousine pulls up. The door opens up and they tell me to get in. They ended up taking me to the frontstretch and when it stopped, they rolled out the red carpet. My, oh my, the fans started booing and I had nothing to do with it.”
Bertling, who is married to Nick Fornoro Sr’s daughter, spends his days and nights in North Carolina. He moved south just slightly more than six years ago.
He has sent out a countless number of resumes in search of involvement in some NASCAR-related team, but with the current state of the economy he is finding it hard to procure employment.
For this weekend, Bertling won’t care about finding a job.
Instead, he’ll focus on what makes him happy – driving and competing.
“I can’t wait for it,” Bertling said. “I can’t wait to get back racing behind the wheel of a TQ-Midget and I can’t wait to see a lot of my buddies from that area.”
