TOP NORTHEAST FEATURE WINNERS TO BE HONORED AT MOTORSPORTS 2011 RACE CAR AND TRADE SHOW

OAKS, PA December 9, 2011. . . Keith Rocco and Stewart Friesen took it down to the wire. Literally.
Both drivers did their best to claim supremacy in the Northeast overall feature win category, as maintained by Area Auto Racing News, as each entered two events in last month’s Turkey Derby XXXVII at Wall Stadium, but both fell short of winning.
Therefore, both will be honored at Motorsports 2011 presented by SEF Race Car and Trade Show on January 22 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center.
Rocco and Friesen have confirmed their plans to attend the event along with Josh Richards (dirt Late Models), Gene Knaub (dirt Late Models), Tim Shaffer (open cockpit) and Sean McAndrew (Micro Sprint Cars). Asphalt Late Model category winner Wayne Helliwell Jr. will be unable to attend.
“It is quite an honor to win something this big,” said Friesen, who also won the dirt Modified category. “This has been a dream season for me and I am so fortunate to have great car owners. This title is just as much about them as it is about me.”
Rocco, who also won the asphalt Modified category, had similar thoughts about this respective honor. “You get so caught up during the season with racing, preparing cars, etc. and you tend to forget about what it all means,” Rocco said. “Winning that many features is incredible and it’s quite a statistic, when you sit back and think about it.”
Rocco’s superb season in the asphalt Modified circuit included 24 victories, five more than Ted Christopher. The Meriden, Conn., driver added another win to his season with an asphalt Late Model win, which came on July 9 at Stafford Motor Speedway.
Rocco, who won the SK-Modified track titles at Stafford Motor Speedway and Waterford Speedway, earned pivotal SK-Modified wins at New Smyrna Speedway in February and Concord Motorsports Park in November.
In between those victories, Rocco grabbed checkered flags at and 10 wins each at Stafford Motor Speedway and Waterford Speedbowl, and another two at Thompson International Speedway. He is the NASCAR Whelen All American Series National champion.
Friesen of Niagara-on-the-Lakes, Canada, captured his first career 360 Sprint Car main in ’10 with an ASCS Patriot Sprint victory at Ransomville Speedway. However, it was his Outlaw-type Modified schedule that made him a fan favorite this past racing season. He won 24 dirt Modified mains, two more than Matt Sheppard. Friesen didn’t commit to any series, opting for an all-out assault to the season, which included track titles at the Utica-Rome Speedway and Five Mile Point Speedway.
Friesen opened ’10 with a Super DIRTcar Series win at Volusia Speedway Park. His other SDS wins came at Cayuga County Fair Speedway and the prestigious SEF 200 at the New York State Fairgrounds.
He dominated at Five Mile Point Speedway by claiming 10 feature events, with five coming at Utica-Rome Speedway, two at Ransomville Speedway, two at Fonda Speedway and one each at Penn Can Speedway and Grandview Speedway.
Shaffer of Aliquippa, Pa., is returning to the Motorsports show for the second consecutive year. After a successful ’09 season, Shaffer had a career-making season with his 21-win season, two more than Pat Cannon.
Shaffer’s banner win season started with an ASCS 360 Sprint Car win at East Bay Raceway Park in February and it concluded in October with an All Star Circuit of Champions win at Lawrenceburg. Shaffer won his second consecutive ASCoC title.
Shaffer’s season was highlighted with the $150,000 Knoxville Nationals, which he captured in mid-August. His 21 wins came in 10 different states and Canada, He also won with the ASCoC, WoO, ASCS and two unsanctioned events.
Knaub of Dover, Pa., and Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., tied with 15 countable dirt Late Model victories.
Knaub dominated the 358 Late Model scene with track titles coming at Williams Grove Speedway, Lincoln Speedway and Trail-Way Speedway.
He captured main events at Williams Grove Speedway (seven), Trail-Way Speedway (three), Susquehanna Speedway Park (three) Central Pennsylvania Speedway (one) and Lincoln Speedway (one).
Richards became the first driver in the modern history of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series to win back-to-back titles. Richards kicked off the season with a January victory at Golden Isles Speedway. His other wins came at Winchester Speedway (four), Hagerstown Speedway (two), Delaware International Speedway, the Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Eriez Speedway, Fayetteville Motor Speedway, Mohawk International Raceway, Ohsweken Speedway, Pennsylvania Motor Speedway and Volusia Speedway Park.
Helliwell of Dover, N.H., narrowly won the asphalt Late Model win category with his 10 win season. Austin Kochenash finished with nine victories, while Woody Pitkat was third with eight. Nine of Helliwell’s 10 victories came at Lee USA Speedway with another coming at Canaan Fair Speedway.
In ’11, Helliwell will drive a small-block Supermodified at Lee USA Speedway. The small-block Supermodifieds are the headline division at the track.
In the Micro Sprint Car category, McAndrew of Apollo, Pa., had a banner season with 22 feature wins, four more than runner-up Phil Durham. McAndrew piloted his No. 15 to 15 wins at Path Valley Speedway, three at Blanket Hill Speedway, two at Deerfield Speedway and one each at Clinton County Raceway and Sportsman’s Speedway.
The awards presentations are part of the huge three day (January 21-23) Motorsports 2011 Presented by SEF Race Car and Trade Show. The show fills all available floor space at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA and offers just about everything imaginable in motorsports.
Complete information on the show may be had at www.aarn.com or telephone 609.888.3618.

FRIESEN READY FOR BACK-TO-BACK TQ (THREE QUARTER)-MIDGET INDOOR EVENTS IN ATLANTIC CITY AND PROVIDENCE

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ/PROVIDENCE, R.I. December 7, 2010 . . . Stewart Friesen wants another photograph in his garage.

The likeable Canadian driver, who now resides in Old Forge, N.Y., still looks at the picture that shows him, Joey Payne and Jack Hewitt in Victory Lane after the indoor TQ (Three Quarter)-Midget race in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

That picture brings a smile to his face as it marked the one and only indoor victory that Friesen, 27, scored when he was a mere 16-year-old driver.

Now, he wants more pictures and Victory Lane photos.

Friesen is stoked for the upcoming Gambler’s Classic indoor TQ-Midget race at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., on January 27-29, 2011, and the Coffee Cup indoor event at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., on February 5.

“I love racing indoors,” Friesen said. “There is nothing like it for the drivers and fans.

“I think one of the reasons I enjoy it so much is due to the cross section of drivers you get at those events. You get guys from the dirt and asphalt world. You have drivers who run TQ-Midgets all season outside. You have guys who run the NASCAR Modified Tour. There are guys who run dirt Modifieds, Sprint Cars and Midgets. All of them seem to migrate to the indoor events.”

Friesen enters the winter indoor events as one of the most decorated drivers of ’10.

He tied NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series champion Keith Rocco for the most wins in the Northeast (25), as compiled by Area Auto Racing News.

Twenty-four of those wins came in dirt Modified racing, while another came in a 360 Sprint Car at Ransomville (N.Y.) Speedway.

His dirt Modified event victories came at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, N.Y (10 wins); Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y. (five wins); Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway (two wins); Ransomville (N.Y.) Speedway (two wins); and one win each at the following tracks, Cayuga County Fair Speedway in Weedsport, N.Y.; Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa.; the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, N.Y.; Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna, Pa.; and Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.

Now, Friesen wants to focus his efforts on the indoor TQ-Midget world.

“The intensity of racing is something like you get at the dirt-track bullrings,” Friesen said. “I would equate the indoor circuit as the same intensity you get from racing at Accord, Five Mile Point or Penn Can speedways. It’s pretty incredible when you’re racing in Atlantic City and/or Providence and you’re constantly turning left, trying to avoid the guy in front and/or in back of you.”

There is another reason why Friesen likes the indoor racing TQ-Midget circuit.

“It is a homecoming of sorts,” he said. “My owner Mel Rapp gave me my first TQ-Midget ride when I was a teenager and that car I drove then is driven by James Michael Friesen.

“Mel’s given me a lot over the years. He’s given me an opportunity to race indoors and I appreciate his loyalty.”

The Friesen name is well represented in Atlantic City and Providence.

Stewart is joined by his cousins, James Michael and Curtis.

“For us, it’s like a family reunion,” Friesen said. “There is no better place to have a family reunion than at a race track. The sport has united our family for years.”

Tickets for the Atlantic City Indoor Race are currently on sale through Ticketmaster (1-800-736-1420) or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets are available with no extra fee applied at the Boardwalk Hall box office and at the Area Auto Racing News office in Trenton, N.J. at 609-888-3618

Activity in Atlantic City will begin on Thurs., Jan. 27, with paid practice from 5-10 p.m.

Weekend activity will begin on Fri., Jan. 28, at 4:30 p.m. with time trials. The night will include heat events for TQ-Midgets and B-Mains for the 600cc Micro Sprint Cars, Slingshots and Champ Karts. It will culminate with a 20-lap 600cc Micro Sprint Car main event and a 30-lap TQ-Midget feature race.
The Sat., Jan. 29, program kicks off at 5 p.m. with the Fanfest, which will be held on the indoor racing surface.

The Saturday-night portion of the show is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Heat races and semis will lead up the 40-lap "Gamblers Classic" for TQ-Midgets, with Slingshots and Champ Karts also on the schedule.

Tickets for the Coffee Cup are available at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000.

TQ-Midgets and Champ Karts will share the one-day card which begins at 7 p.m.

USAC AND ARCA TO JOINTLY COMPETE DURING THURSDAY NIGHT OF 2011 KROGER SPEEDFEST

INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 2, 2010) O’Reilly Raceway Park officials in conjunction with key personnel from the United States Auto Club (USAC) and the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards announced today that both series will be featured during Thursday night of the 2011 Kroger SpeedFest on July 28th. The evening will be called the ‘Thursday Night Triple Header’ and will feature the, USAC Mopar National Midget Series, the USAC Silver Crown Series and the ARCA National Stock Car Series. This will be the first time in history that all three series have raced at one venue on the same night.

“We feel the Thursday Night Triple Header will be an incredible night of racing and will be a tremendous addition to the storied history of Kroger SpeedFest,” said Wes Collier, acting general manager at O’Reilly Raceway Park. “All three of these series will add to what is already some of the best racing in the country during the course of three evenings.”

USAC has a rich and storied tradition at O’Reilly Raceway Park with 292 races run at the facility with a list of winners including A. J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman and Jeff Gordon. USAC and ARCA have raced together in the past with the Silver Crown Series in 1998 at Memphis and the Mopar National Midget Series at South Boston in 2003.

“Our long relationship with our friends at ARCA has produced some memorable racing weekends,” adds USAC President/CEO Kevin Miller. “We are pleased that we can offer this tremendous tripleheader event to the race fans at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, one of the nation’s premier racing facilities. It’s been seven years since the Midgets and ARCA shared billing and a dozen years since ARCA and the Silver Crown cars were on the same bill. We are extremely excited about this program and look forward to what we expect to be one of our season’s signature events.”

This also marks the first time that ARCA has returned to O’Reilly Raceway Park since the 1985 season when Bob Schacht won at the facility. Schacht has the most ARCA wins at the track with two victories.

“USAC and O’Reilly Raceway Park have provided us with a tremendous opportunity to join what is already a great night of racing during the Kroger SpeedFest,” said ARCA President Ron Drager. “We hope to add to the energy and excitement of all the racing taking place in Indianapolis that week.”

The 2011 Kroger SpeedFest triumphantly returns to O’Reilly Raceway Park on July 28 – 30 and will once again feature the NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, ARCA National Stock Car Series, USAC Midget and Silver Crown series during the course of three thrilling nights of racing.

One of five drag racing facilities owned and operated by the National Hot Rod Association, O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis was built in 1960 and has presented organized racing events since 1961. From March through October, the facility hosts more than 120 dates of racing on three tracks, a quarter-mile drag strip, a .686-mile paved oval and a 2.5-mile road course. Home to drag racing’s biggest event, the NHRA U.S. Nationals over Labor Day weekend, the drag strip runs more than 50 days of point-to-point action, from national events to street legal community programs. The oval track draws racing’s biggest events, including annual visits from the NASCAR Nationwide, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and annual USAC races. The road course provides a home for several racing sanctions, while providing an ideal resource for driving schools, corporate outings and open-road tests for professional drivers.
