HOOSIER HUNDRED'S SUNSET BELONGS TO SUNSHINE

Indianapolis, Indiana (May 23, 2019).........Bravery, machismo, bravado, call it what you will. On a late restart with seven laps remaining, Tyler Courtney used every ounce of it in his figurative tank to rip around near-race-long leader Kevin Thomas, Jr. to win a bittersweet "Hoosier Hundred" Thursday night, in the final running of the event at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Courtney, the Indianapolis, Ind. native whose parents were part of the promotion team for the 2005 Hoosier Hundred, kept pace with Thomas, following him for 92 straight laps until making the winning move on a restart that made all the difference, one that came with a bit of advice courtesy of a voice from above.
"(Tyler Ransbottom), who's my crew chief on the sprint car and midget, and my spotter tonight, told me on the open red that Jason McDougal had been making up time on restarts doing that same move. KT was lifting on restarts into one. So, I knew that if I could just outbrave him a little bit getting in and make sure I didn't blow past it, it would work. Luckily, it did. You get the open track, no lapped cars, nothing, I got to run as hard as I wanted to for the last eight laps and that's what I did. If it was going to blow, it was going to blow with me trying."
The Hoosier Hundred's illustrious history runs the gamut in terms of the names that have won since its debut in 1953. Courtney is fully aware of the history, and Thursday night's win was something he doesn't take for granted.
"My name is now alongside a lot of great names," Courtney realized. "Including Kody Swanson, one of the best Silver Crown drivers in our lifetime. Foyt, Andretti, Pancho Carter, all those names. It's incredible."
Courtney started third on the grid as Chris Windom got the jump on the field on the initial start from his outside front row starting position. Windom led the first five trips around the one-mile dirt oval, but Thomas and Courtney were able to make up ground and close the gap. Thomas ducked to the inside of Windom coming off turn four with Courtney a car length behind in third when all broke loose.
Seemingly without warning, Windom's right rear tire shredded, sending the 2016 Silver Crown champ into one of the most harrowing crashes witnessed in the century-plus history of the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Windom's car immediately veered his car right, hitting nose first into the outside wall, which sent him barrel-rolling seven times and lasting nearly a half-straightaway.
Brian Tyler and Brady Bacon took evasive action, swerving to miss the helpless Windom machine as it bounced aimlessly toward the middle of the racetrack.
Miraculously, Windom climbed from the mangled wreckage unscathed and plans to move on with his weekend, which includes his Indy Lights debut Friday afternoon at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a Friday night Silver Crown race at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis and a 500-lap Sprint Car race in Anderson, Ind.
Following the lengthy red flag, Thomas dominated up front, driving for four-time "Hoosier Hundred" winning team Foxco Racing to lead a race-high 87 laps. By lap 16, Thomas had already infiltrated lapped traffic and the interval between he and Courtney rarely fluctuated as Thomas built a half-straightaway lead over Courtney with a quarter of the laps in the books.
Just after halfway, four-time "Hoosier Hundred" winner Kody Swanson put the heat on Courtney for second while Thomas managed to stretch his lead from 1.5 sec. to 2.5 sec. over the following ten laps. Six-time All Star Circuit of Champions titlist Chad Kemenah then found t the turn two wall in his maiden Silver Crown start.
Though Swanson applied pressure, Courtney wasn't going to allow him to make any sort of run at him as he bid his time in anticipation of making his own move.
"I knew if I kept KT within sight and Kody behind me, I was going to be at a good pace," Courtney realized. "We tried not to let KT get too far. If he got too far, then I'd pick up the pace a bit. Luckily, we got that last red there and made a few adjustments, timed the restart right and made a bold move. I wanted it really bad."
On the lap 69 restart, Swanson turned up the wick, getting to second briefly by going underneath Courtney between turns one and two. Courtney fought back on the outside and regained second by the exit of turn two as Swanson slipped back to third. Jason McDougal, meanwhile, making his second career Silver Crown start was mega-impressive using the cushion long thought to be extinct to travel from his 25th starting spot and into the top-five with 25 laps remaining.
Meanwhile, following an early-race pit stop that sent him to 28th, Brady Bacon had been shot out of a cannon and drove into the top tier nearing the race's end and into the top-five.
Thomas worked through lapped traffic once again, getting hung up ever so slightly, allowing Courtney to close the gap briefly while Thomas nudged ahead, yet Courtney remained within striking distance, chopping down Thomas' lead to a half-second with nine to go.
With Thomas and Courtney's battle set to rage on down the stretch, just in front of them in turn two was two-time ALMS champion Chris Dyson who banged the turn two wall and endured his own upside-down thrill ride from which he escaped injury.
During the open red flag, Joe Devin, chassis builder for Courtney's Hans Lein-owned entry, came over and talked to my crew chief Greg Nelson and I told him I was lacking sidebite in the middle of the corner. So, we made a couple of adjustments that helped me a ton."
It appeared the changes helped immensely when the green flag dropped on the lap 93 restart. Without lapped traffic on the horizon now, Courtney showed no hesitation whatsoever, aiming for the top and driving it into turn one harder than he had all night up to that point. Thomas showed no vital signs of reestablishing the top spot down the stretch as Courtney grew his lead by leaps and bounds to win his second career Silver Crown race, but first on one of the historic one-mile dirt ovals where he became the first driver won in all three USAC National divisions in 2019.
Thomas finished his fourth-straight USAC Silver Crown race on dirt in the runner-up spot. Swanson's bid for a fifth-straight "Hoosier Hundred" victory to break a tie with Al Unser (1970-73) came up short, finishing third ahead of Justin Grant and Bacon.

USAC AMSOIL SPRINT CAR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP EASTERN STORM OPENS AT GRANDVIEW TUESDAY NIGHT, JUNE 11, $10,000 TO WIN JESSE HOCKETT CLASSIC
BECHTELSVILLE, PA . . . . .Rain and bad weather has not been a friend to local short track racing of late, but all race fans welcome and look forward to this storm, the thirteenth annual EASTERN STORM for the USAC AMSOIL Non-Wing Sprint Cars, and it’s coming to the Grandview Speedway on Tuesday night, June 11 with the $10,000 to win Jesse Hockett Classic. The NASCAR 358 Modifieds will be part of this big doubleheader with qualifying events leading up to the 30 lap, $3,000 to win feature even.
This wildly popular traveling series comes east just one time a year and this show is one you just can’t miss. Watch the non-wing sprints slide and glide around the one-third mile high banked Grandview Speedway and you’ll see some wheel banging, rooster tails and wheelies. And that’s just warm-ups.
For the thirteenth consecutive year, the USAC AMSOIL Non Wing Sprint Car National Championship returns East with stops at the Grandview Speedway, Bridgeport Speedway, BAPS Motor Speedway, Port Royal and Weedsport Speedway’s. The five race swing, in keeping with tradition will open with the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill signature event at the Grandview Speedway. The Tuesday night, June 11 show will boast the USAC $10,000 to win Jesse Hockett Classic joined by the 358 NASCAR Modifieds with racing getting underway at 7:30 PM. This year also marks the 30th Anniversary of the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series.
Wednesday night, June 12 the Bridgeport Speedway will present the USAC AMSOIL Non-Wing sprints in a double header with the 600 micros, Thursday night, June 13 the tour moves to the BAP’S Speedway joined by the 360 Sprints and Super Sportsman. Saturday night, June 15 the traveling non-wing racers invade the Port Royal Speedway before closing out the swing at the popular Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, NY on Sunday night, June 16. Defending USAC Eastern Storm Champion Chris Windom is already planning his trip East.
USAC brings a long and rich history especially to Berks County. USAC first raced in Berks County at the Reading Fairgrounds in 1956 and it was Oley, PA driver Tommy Hinnershitz who won the first three USAC events on the Reading half-mile. The USAC/Berks County tradition continued until April 1979 when Paul Pitzer took the win at what would be the final USAC event at the Reading Fairgrounds.
Grandview Track Owner Bruce Rogers and Thunder on the Hills’ Bob Miller made several attempts to bring 410 non-wing sprint cars back to Berks County, presenting CRA and SCRA events in the 1990’s . After many discussions, a deal was worked out and in June 2007, USAC made the trip to Grandview and it was Levi Jones who took the win in a historic USAC return to Berks County. Now in 2019, the Eastern Storm will mark its’ thirteenth tour to the East, opening on the famed “hill” of Grandview Speedway.
Drivers from all over the country will gather on the “hill” Tuesday night, June 11 for the 40 lap Jesse Hockett Classic and the roster will include Chris Windom, Justin Grant, C.J. Leary, Brady Bacon, Chase Stockon, Justin Grant, Tyler Courtney and Robert Ballou.
The Berks County one-third mile high banked Grandview Speedway is just the perfect setting for a USAC National Non-Win Championship event. USAC time trials at Grandview are usually more exciting than the main divisions elsewhere, so don’t miss time trials.
Advance tickets may be ordered for the Tuesday, June 11 USAC Sprints & Modified show by calling 443 513 4456. Please speak slowly and clearly when leaving a message and be sure to leave your name and number of tickets you will need. Feel free to leave your phone number as well. Tickets may be paid for and picked up at the WILL CALL Window on race night after 3:30 PM. These tickets will entitle you to enter the grandstands at 4:30. Adult admission tickets are $30, children 6 to 11 $10 and children five and under will be admitted for free.

MODS AND SPORTSMAN IN ACTION ON SATURDAY, MAY 25TH
BECHTELSVILLE, PA May 22, 2019 . . . The battle for the NASCAR championships in T.P.Trailers Modifieds and T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman will continue this Saturday night, May 25, at Grandview Speedway as a doubleheader show kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
Craig Von Dohren sits on top of the standings in the Modified division while Brad Grim has the top position in the Sportsman. However competition is close in both divisions as the racers battle for the lucrative titles.
Two wins this season has allowed Von Dohren, a ten time champion, to hold on to the top spot in the Modified division with 1300 counters while Rick Laubach is just nineteen points behind without benefit of a win. Veteran campaigner Frank Cozze is third with 1153 followed by Duane Howard’s 1130 and Kyle Weiss’ 1049 rounding out the top five.
The last few Modified races have attracted more than 40 entries per night.
Brad Grim has just a 25 point lead over last Saturday’s Sportsman feature winner. Grim has 1061 tallies while Hirthler has 1036. Jack Butler sits in third with 1023 followed by Brad Brightbill at 1016 and Mark Kemmerer with 1011.
On Saturday, June 1, there will be a first time appearance of Central PA Legends racers as they join the NASCAR Modifieds and Sportsman for a tripleheader that will be the first of the season to have RCN-TV coverage.
Featured in the Low Down and Dirty Meet & Greet this Saturday, starting at 5 p.m., will be Modified talent Skylar Sheriff and Sportsman racer Mike Mammana. The two racers will have their race cars on display just outside of the main entrance.
Spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m. Adult admission is just $15 while youngsters under the age of 12 are admitted free.
And coming up on June 8th is Whelen Engineering Night featuring the T.P.Trailers Modifieds and T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman.
The first Thunder on the Hill Racing Series event, now in its 30th year, is set for Tuesday, June 11th at 7:30 p.m. The night of racing excitement will include the United States Auto Club Non-Wing Sprint Tour along with the 358 Modifieds in the Jesse Hockett Classic. The Sprints will be racing for $10,000 to win.

DIETRICH OUT DUELS SCHATZ
Danny Dietrich wins World of Outlaws debut at 3/8-mile Bridgeport Speedway
Sweat masked Danny Dietrich’s face. His breathing adjusted to the need for an extra pocket of air. His boisterous posture tired, but a smile stayed. The Gettysburg, Pa. native wore the appearance of a lonely diver seconds after surviving a shark attack.
And in his own way, he did.
Dietrich won his fifth World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series victory Tuesday night in the Series’ debut at the 3/8-mile Bridgeport Speedway. To claim it, he fended off attacks by David Gravel, Carson Macedo and 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz – who even stole the lead from him late in the race.
“It was pretty nerve racking,” Dietrich said after the 35-lap Feature.
His night started on a less nerve-cringing note, setting Quick Time in Qualifying – making him the current track record holder for the new 3/8-mile track configuration. From there he went on to finish second in his Drydene Heat race to Schatz and then won the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash.
His Dash victory lead to concern, though. He and his team discovered an issue with the rear end of their No. 48 car and had to change it. While sweat leaked from Dietrich and his crew, their nerves never faltered. Focused and determined, the Dietrich team, along with help from others were able to replace the car’s rear end in about 15 minutes.
Having a new rear end in the car was of no concern to Dietrich, but the new brakes were.
“We rolled out there (for the Feature), we had new brake pads and rotors. It needed to set the brake pads in a little bit,” Dietrich said. “We didn’t have very good brakes there rolling around before the green flag. They came in. That’s the only thing I was worried about.”
When the green flag flew, all that matter was the throttle. He mashed it, jolting to the lead over second-place Macedo and put several car lengths between them by the end of the first lap.
At the same time, Schatz – who was hungry for a win after getting passed for the win last week – almost found himself off the track on the first lap and fell from third to 10th. He wouldn’t stay there long, though.
At the front, Dietrich enjoyed a clear race track for six laps before catching lap traffic. Behind him, Gravel worked his way by Macedo for second-place and could sense the blood in the water with lap cars slowing Dietrich’s pace. The Watertown, Conn. native looked for déjà vu when lap cars helped him pass Dietrich at Williams Grove Speedway and he went on to win.
Gravel had set himself up to make a pass of Dietrich, finding grip on the bottom of the track, but a caution came out for a car stopped on the front stretch.
When the race went back green, Gravel didn’t let Dietrich pull too far away. Macedo didn’t let the No. 41 car get away either. On Lap 11, Macedo got by the No. 41 car, while Gravel tried to set himself up for another pass on Dietrich. At the same time, Schatz had made his way to fourth-place, steadily making his way back to the front.
For the next two laps Gravel and Macedo traded positions, while Schatz waited for his moment to strike. Macedo eventually won the battle for second-place with seven laps to go. Less than a lap later he was back in third, as Schatz found his way by Gravel and continued the run past Macedo. Next was Dietrich.
With three laps to go, Schatz snuck under the No. 48 car in turns three and four and took the lead.
“Slow down and just be patient,” Dietrich said is what he told himself at that point. “When he passed me, I hit the bottom of (turns) one and two and I just had to slow down and just wait for the moisture. It felt like I was just going so slow, but patients.”
A lap later his patients paid off. Dietrich slid underneath Schatz in turns three and four and fended him off to be the first Series winner on the 3/8-mile configuration of the Bridgeport, NJ track.
“Good hard, racing,” Dietrich said. “I’m sure he’s not happy to finish second, but I’m real happy to win.”
Digesting the result back at his hauler, Schatz said he wishes he could have pulled off the win but isn’t hanging his head too low.
“He did a little better job when I got by him and I probably should have used up more of the track a little bit,” Schatz said. “But, hey, it’s racing. There will be another one tomorrow.”
Schatz also continues to hold the points lead over Brad Sweet – extending it to a 36 point lead. Daryn Pittman remains third – 74 points back – and Gravel, who finished third, remains fourth – 80 points back.
“The track was awesome,” Gravel said. “It was really racey. A lot of grooves. Just disappointed I didn’t get my wing back earlier. We had a good enough race car to win. Just got stuck on the bottom a little bit. I should have kept my speed up a little bit more.”
Dietrich had the track figured out all night. Why? How?
“I have no idea,” he said with a chuckle.
Wiping the sweat from his face and regaining a normal breathing pattern, Dietrich just knows he survived the big sharks of the World of Outlaws – a special present on his 31st birthday.
