Housworth Highlights New Egypt Speedway Championship Night; Takes Two Track Championships

NEW EGYPT, NJ - In 2019, Jim Housworth lost the Sportsman championship by a scant two markers, the equivalent to just one position on the race track. Housworth who picked up Crate Modified championships in 2010 & 2011 came back with a vengeance in 2020 and earned not one, but two New Egypt Speedway track championships in the Sportsman and Ice Less LLC Crate Modified divisions respectively, becoming the first driver to win two different titles in the same season at NES.

“It’s good to be the first to win two titles in one season, I can’t thank my crew enough, these guys, both cars, two championships, everybody makes it possible. My sponsors make it so if we need something we can get it. It was a lot of hard work and dedication by those guys. It means alot, New Egypt is my home track, this year things just rolled our way,” said Housworth post race.

In the Ice Less LLC Crate Modifieds it was Robbie Holzwarth and Aaron Weaver bringing the field down to the green flag with Holzwarth jumping out to the early lead before fourth place starting Robby Dunn would make his move, taking the top spot on lap three.

Trouble would strike on lap 11 when Glenn McIntyre would end up getting stuck on top of the turn one fence. When green replaced yellow Dunn continued to lead the way over 10th place starting Johnny Bangs. The red flag would fly on lap 14 when Holzwarth made hard contact with the frontstretch wall and then rolled over, he would be ok. When racing resumed Dan Fleming was able to wrestle the lead away from Dunn on lap 15 bringing Bangs back with him into the runner-up position just three laps later. The final yellow of the event flew on lap 18 when Aaron Weaver crept to a stop in turn four. Over the final two laps Bangs would take his shot at Fleming but it would be to no avail. Fleming went on to dedicate the win to his mom who is doing better in the hospital after being involved in a car accident on her way to the track last week. Bangs came home as the runner-up, Robby Dunn third with Jeremy Martino fourth and Sammy Martz Jr. fifth. Crossing the line sixth and picking up the 2020 Ice Less LLC Crate Modified title was Jim Housworth.

In the Sportsman main event it was Jimmy Amato and Marty Resnick leading the field to the green flag. Title contender David Burns would shoot to the lead on lap number two after starting sixth and appeared to be in control of his first Sportsman championship, that was until a restart just prior to the halfway point when Burns was put back one row after Speedway officials deemed he was taking other title contender and second place running Jim Housworth up the Speedway twice in a row. That handed the lead to Housworth who ran away and hid into the Central Jersey night, picking up the victory. Will Dupree came home second, Burns third, with Ryan Heim and Bob Lineman Jr. fourth and fifth. Housworth would win the Sportsman title by 13 points over Burns.

Heidi Hedin led the Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Car Presented By: The Meat Shoppe main event at the start but it was Brad Schaale leading the first lap when Hedin got out of shape coming down to complete lap one. Schaale went untouched the rest of the distance to score his first career Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Car Presented By: The Meat Shoppe victory over Heidi Hedin, Rich Mellor, Brian Spencer and Kevin Nealis. By virtue of his third place finish Rich Mellor is the Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Car Presented By: The Meat Shoppe titleist for the second consecutive season.

Larry Reed was awarded the Street Stock victory when Shanon Mongeau and Mick Search were both disqualified in post-race tech inspection. Brian Ludwig came home second with Spider Ensinger Sr., Lee Allen and Joe Reid rounding out the top five. Ludwig wrapped up the 2020 New Egypt Speedway Street Stock Championship with his second place finish, his first in 18 seasons of racing.

Mike Fox picked up his third 4-Cylinder main event of the 2020 season at NES over Joe Garey Sr., Justin Dunn, Joe Garey Jr. and Shea Willis. Justin Dunn and Garey Sr. would tie for the points title. For Garey it is his third in a row and Dunn his first at New Egypt Speedway.

In Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman competition Paul Mancini did exactly what he needed to do which was win Saturday night’s event as he too would end up tying Mason McGee for the overall 2020 championship.

In the 20+ year history of New Egypt Speedway there has only ever been one tie for a championship and that occurred in 2006 when Bryan Driver and Mike Smith tied for the Rookie Sportsman championship, in 2020 it occurred twice.

While we are dark next Saturday night, we return on Saturday night October 3rd for the All Star Cup 100 for the Vahlco Wheels Modifieds paying $10,000 to win, $1,000 for 10th and $500 just to make the 100 lap feature. The Ice Less LLC Crate Modifieds will do battle in a 30 lap main event paying $1,000 to win event with the 4-Cylinders completing the racing card. Gates will open at 3pm on the 3rd with hot laps hitting the Speedway at 5pm and racing beginning at 6pm.

Buffalino Wheels Small Block To Third NES Victory; Bouc 2020 Modified Champ

NEW EGYPT, NJ - Dominick Buffalino took the lead from Dakota Kessler on a lap 20 restart and went on to pick up his third New Egypt Speedway Vahlco Wheels Modified win of 2020 on Saturday night.

“This is getting to be a thing, I like it,” exclaimed Buffalino post race. “I want to thank my crew, my girlfriend, everyone that helped me. Thanks to the fans, everyone that’s here.

Frank Venezia led the field to the green and jumped out to the early race lead before relinquishing the lead on lap seven to Dakota Kessler who was fast a week ago until he tangled with a lapped car while running second.

The man on the move early on in the 30 lap affair was Ryan Krachun who started seventh and cracked the podium on the 10th lap.

The first yellow flag of the event flew when Cale Ross spun at the exit of turn two after contact with the No. 76 of Jimmy Blewett on the 15th lap.

On the restart Kessler continued to lead the way and appeared to be on his way to his first career Vahlco Wheels Modified victory.

A new challenger entered the fray on lap 17 when two-time winner Dominick Buffalino made his way past Krachun and into the runner-up position.

The second yellow flag of the event occurred when Danny Carlough crept to a stop in between turns three and four putting Buffalino alongside Kessler on the ensuing restart.

Kessler jumped back out to the lead following the restart despite being hounded by Buffalino, Buffalino utilizing a spec-small block power plant versus the big block in which he had used throughout the season would draw even with Kessler but would not be able to clear him for position over the course of the next two laps.

The final yellow of the event flew when championship contender Mike Butler was found facing the wrong way on a one way street in turns one and two.

When green replaced yellow, Buffalino wound his small block up on the outside and as the field came down to complete lap number 20, Buffalino would be scored as the new race leader.

Over the course of the next 10 laps, Buffalino would check out and run off into the Central Jersey night winning his third Modified event of the year by 2.923 seconds over runner-up Dakota Kessler.

17th place starter Billy Pauch Jr. charged hard late in the game to finish third, while Ryan Krachun and Wade Hendrickson completed the top five.

“I didn’t get to sleep much this past week because we had to change motors, this motor wasn’t done until Wednesday. I gotta thank Frank Boardwick for rushing to get this done. I’m glad it’s in, it’s a hell of a lot easier to drive with a small block in it,” said Buffalino.

By virtue of his 10th place finish Danny Bouc is officially the 2020 New Egypt Speedway Vahlco Wheels Modified champion.

“This has been in the works for a long time,” said Bouc. “I think this is the year I showed the least amount of speed and consistency out of all of them. We’ve lost them just about every way you could have over the years but we’ll take it.

“It doesn’t matter if it's a short season or whatever the circumstances were, we worked really hard for this, this one is for my guys, my mom, my dad, my girlfriend, they all sacrifice so much so that I can do this, we’re non stop working on this car. I’m very relieved.”

Rich Mellor took the race lead from Heidi Hedin on lap four and went on to score his fourth Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars Presented By: The Meat Shoppe win over Brian Spencer, Mick D’Agastino, Heidi Hedin and Mark Bitner.

Howie Finch passed Walt McIntyre coming to the two to go signal to pick up his first Ice Less LLC Crate Modified main event of the 2020 season. McIntyre ran a career best to finish second, Dan Fleming, Sammy Martz Jr. and Justin Grosso rounded out the top five.

Justin Dunn scored the 4-Cylinder victory over his father Scott Dunn, Mike Fox, Joe Garey Sr., and Tim Jones.

Nick Stephan was the victor in the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman.

Fulper Flies To First New Egypt Victory; Housworth Hustles To Romano Memorial

NEW EGYPT, NJ - Milford, NJ’s JR Fulper picked up his first career New Egypt Speedway Modified victory on Saturday night as he held off Frank Cozze and a hard charging David VanHorn in the 30-lap main event.

“I’m so happy, when I was going to work this morning something told me that we would be here tonight. I can’t believe it. We were able to put everything together,” said Fulper post race.

Kory Fleming led the Vahlco Wheels Modified feature to the green flag and would lead the first five laps of the event before giving way to JR Fulper.

With Fulper out in front the man on the move in the early stages was Dakota Kessler racing up to second from his seventh place starting spot by lap eight.

The first yellow of the event flew on lap 11 when Eric Engstrom broke and veered into traffic, clipping Kessler severely damaging the right rear corner of his No. 449 and ending his promising night.

Fulper maintained the lead on the restart which saw Frank Cozze charge up to third from the sixth position.

The second and final caution of the event occurred on lap 12 when Ryan Krachun debuting a new Bicknell machine had trouble on the backstretch ending his event.

Fulper again shot out to the lead on the restart and this time brought Frank Cozze with him who had finally cleared Cale Ross for the runner-up position. David VanHorn entered the fray at the lap 17 mark as he was now on the charge up from his 13th starting position. At the five to go signal VanHorn had caught Cozze for second, finally getting past the No. 401 with two laps remaining.

While all of this was going on JR Fulper pulled out to over a second lead. Unfortunately for VanHorn’s sake he would run out of time as Fulper held him off for his first career Modified win.

VanHorn crossed the stripe in second with Frank Cozze third, 15th starting Billy Pauch Jr. in fourth and Davey Sammons fifth.

“We did a good job getting through lapped traffic, everything went good. We work so hard, we’re a small family team. I can’t believe we beat those guys,” said an elated Fulper in victory lane.

The Sportsman had their night in the spotlight on Saturday with the John Romano Memorial 30 lapper.

Marty Resnick used his pole position starting spot to jump out to the early lead but the caution would fly on the first lap when Matt Ellery and Joseph Brown tangled causing a pile up that also included John Scarpati and Bill Liedtka.

When green replaced yellow, Resnick continued to set the pace with John Criscione all over the back bumper of the No. 13. The second caution of the race flew when points leader David Burns spun in turns one and two.

Resnick held his ground out front before Criscione finally got the best of him on lap seven.

The caution flag came unfurled again on lap 17 for Joseph Brown who again was pointed backwards in turns three and four, this time after contact with Aaron Weaver.

Criscone would be back out front on the restart but it would be Jim Housworth leading lap 18 as he cleared Criscione for position.

The final yellow of the event flew when Jimmy Amato was found backwards in turns one and two.

Housworth continued to lead on the restart and went on to score the John Romano Memorial victory. Bob Lineman Jr. charged from his 10th place starting position to come home second with Criscione third, Burns rebounded from his spin to finish fourth and 2019 John Romano Memorial winner Will Dupree rounded out the top five.

Sammy Martz Jr. rocketed to the front of the Ice Less LLC Crate Modified main event from his 15th starting position for good on lap 15 as he took the lead from Robbie Holzwarth to pick up his second of the season at NES. Jim Housworth ran second followed by Dan Fleming, Anthony Tramontana Jr. and Vinny Troia.

Shannon Mongeau won his second Street Stock feature event of the season as he was chased by Bill Liedtka, point leader Brian Ludwig, Larry Reed and Joe Reid.

Amanda Buchel was the winner in the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman.

Romano, who passed away after a brief illness in 2009 did anything and everything that he absolutely could to help a fellow racer, whether it was lend them a motor, help change a flat or even run back to his own house to get parts. You name it; John did it to help them out.
