HOWARD AND VON DOHREN WIN NASCAR MODIFIED FEATURES WHILE GULDIN COLLECTS HIS FIRST CAREER GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY SPORTSMAN FEATURE WIN
TRIPLEHEADER ACTION AT GRANDVIEW ON JUNE 22 FEATURING MODS, SPORTSMAN AND WINGLESS SUPER SPORTSMAN
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. June 16, 2019 In the Saturday night racing action at Grandview Speedway broadcast by RCN-TV, Allentown later in the week, five-time NASCAR track modified point champion Duane Howard started off the show by putting the Norm Hansell-owned Norm’s Save Station No. 357 in victory lane at the conclusion of the 30-lap TP Trailers NASCAR 358 Modified feature postponed by rain on June 1 for his second win of the season.
It appeared Steve Swinehart, winless since May 2004, was going to claim the win in the first feature only to get bottled up behind a lapped car on the 27th lap. Howard capitalized on the opportunity to sneak through the opening on the backstretch to motor into the winner’s circle for his 74th career win. Howard commented they have a good team with good equipment, but they just have to start showing it to get the results of their hard work.
Craig Von Dohren, behind the wheel of the Pioneer Pole Buildings/Keith Harring Transportation No. 1 C, overtook Ray Swinehart for the lead in the second Modified feature from the regular portion on the 20th lap and proceeded to hold off the continuous pressure from runner-up Kevin Hirthler to garner his third win at the oval. Von Dohren felt his car didn’t feel that fast towards the end of the “interesting” race, but he still got the job done.
TP Truck Equipment Sportsman rookie driver Parker Guldin has been experiencing his share of ups and downs with carburetor and other issues in his first year learning stages at the 1/3-mile oval having been in competition in New Jersey last year where he won two features. Finally fellow Craig Whitmoyer, a rookie in the Modified class, stepped in to help and found the problem for the team. Whatever Whitmoyer did, helped as Guldin regained the lead from Sean Weiss on the fifth lap and later held off the constant challenges of Dean Bachman and finally second place finisher Brad Brightbill. Guldin’s crate powered engine earned him an extra $100.
Providing all feature winners met the necessary requirements, they received monetary awards from TP Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were S. Swinehart, R. Swinehart and Guldin.
Steve Swinehart grabbed the early lead at the onset of the first Modified feature trailed by Justin Grim, Jordan Henn, Ryan Lilick and K. Hirthler.
The only yellow was on the fourth lap caused when Louden Reimert slowed his pace. Swinehart held his position, but by now Henn, Hirthler, Howard and Jeff Strunk were chasing him.
Lap traffic by lap 17 caused the front runners to use heads-up driving, but Swinehart still managed to maintain the lead.
With five laps remaining, Howard and Strunk moved into second and third respectively to put their bids in for the lead.
On the 27th lap a slower car in the high lane in front of Swinehart allowed Howard to scoot by and become the new pacesetter.
Howard never looked back and went on to capture the victory followed by S. Swinehart, who endured a heartbreak at a chance for victory; last week’s feature winner Strunk, Henn, for his best finish and K. Hirthler.
Steve Wilson, another rookie, took the early lead at the drop of the green in the second Modified feature.
Wilson held the lead until Ray Swinehart took over the number one position on the 10th lap.
Behind Swinehart dicing for the remaining positions were Wilson, Hirthler, Grim and Mike Lisowski with the order constantly changing.
Hirthler was challenging his father-in-law for first by the 13th lap with Von Dohren, Doug Manmiller and Grim chasing.
Von Dohren charged into second on the 17th lap to pursue Swinehart and four laps later he was at the head of the pack.
Lap 22 saw Hirthler advance to second and give Von Dohren a run for the money as the side-by-side battle ensured.
Von Dohren succeeded at holding off the competition and chalked up Saturday night win number 108 chased across by Hirthler, Manmiller, Jared Umbenhauer and Howard, the Hard Charger recipient in both features starting 13th and 22nd.
Heats were won by R. Swinehart, Ron Seltmann Jr., S. Swinehart and Wilson. Jordan Henn and Howard won the consies.
Polesitter Sean Weiss led the Sportsman feature until the fifth lap restart created for an incident in the second turn and on the backstretch. On the restart Guldin put the Penny’s Shear Heaven/Oley Feed Mills No. 11 into the lead.
The battle behind Guldin for second through fifth was intense between Dean Bachman, Brad Brightbill, Weiss and Mark Kemmerer, who were just waiting for Guldin to slip-up.
Guldin and Bachman diced for the lead for a while until Brightbill took over second.
Guldin stuck with his “don’t give up” attitude and never faltered to pull into the winner’s circle a very jubilant first time victor followed by Brightbill, Bachman, for his best finish, Weiss and Kemmerer.
Weiss, Guldin and Bachman won the heats.
Here is what is coming next at Grandview. Saturday, June 22nd, Wingless Super Sportsman make their first appearance in a tripleheader that also features the T.P.Trailers NASCAR 358 Modifieds and the T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman plus the qualifying events for all divisions. Spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing getting the green at 7:30 p.m. Adult admission for this tripleheader card is just $15 for adults while youngsters under 12 are admitted free.
On Sunday, June 23, 1 p.m. Outlaw Enduro and Blast from the Past Vintage racing action is the attraction.

COURTNEY RULES PORT ROYAL EASTERN STORM ROUND

Port Royal, Pennsylvania (June 15, 2019).........For Tyler Courtney, the date of June 15th and the location of Port Royal Speedway means more than just another stop on the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car tour.
For Port Royal was the half-mile dirt oval where his mentor, Bryan Clauson, recorded his record sixth and final "Eastern Storm" win in 2016. Saturday night also marked what would've been Clauson's 30th birthday.
Courtney, the defending series champ, was bound and determined to make his own personal mark to honor BC on this night during round three of the 13th annual "Eastern Storm" series but felt there was a spirit helping him along the way.
"We've kind of struggled all week," Courtney admitted. "But I think we had somebody looking down on us tonight. This one's for him. He's done a lot for my career. He's done a lot for everybody on this team. Even without him being here, he helped us more than he knows."
The emotional victory for Courtney aboard his Clauson-Marshall-Newman Racing/NOS Energy Drink - Competition Suspension, Inc./Spike/Rider Chevy appeared as smooth as silk for 30 laps with barely any threats posed en route to his second series victory of the year. His half-mile record with the series in 2019 now includes wins at Eldora and Port Royal to go along with a 3rd at Terre Haute.
Indianapolis, Indiana's Courtney started from the outside of the front row and was seemingly gone, ripping the top, as Chris Windom attempted to keep pace in second. Courtney's lead stretched out to three-quarters of a straightaway over Windom in the first-third of the race until 2015 Port Royal winner Robert Ballou made contact in turn three, heavily damaging the torsion bar and the left rear wheel, forcing him on the sideline for the remainder of the night.
Courtney had been solid as a rock at Port Royal in his previous two campaigns, finishing 4th in 2017 and 3rd in 2018. But Windom, who lined up second on the ensuing restart, was victorious in both of those instances. Windom's best opportunity to get past was to dive low in one to the inside guardrail to throw the slider on the restart. He did just that when racing resumed on lap 12, but there wasn't enough mustard on the fastball to surge ahead, and instead, tucked in behind Courtney exiting turn two.
Yellows and restarts were the only things tugging on Courtney's cape this night as each time Courtney stood on the throttle, his competition was left in the distant past. The separation from Courtney to Windom was instantly a half-straightaway while Windom found himself a 10-car length lead over the fierce battle for third between Kevin Thomas, Jr., Chase Stockon and new one-lap track record holder, C.J. Leary.
At the midway point, Thomas slid by Stockon on the bottom of turn three. Stockon countered to regain third exiting four. Stockon's grasp on the spot was hanging in the balance and Thomas was able to pick Stockon off by the time they reached turn two on the 16th lap. By turn four of the same lap, Leary had slid by Stockon to take ownership of fourth to begin the second half of the 30-lapper.
Meanwhile, Courtney was cruising with nothing but Warren Alston's double checkers on his mind and vision with six laps remaining. That was until third-running Thomas, who was on the topside of turn three and in the midst of a joust with Leary for third, suffered a blown right rear tire which sent him hard into the outside guardrail with a mighty wallop, elevating all four wheels of his car off the ground before landing back on all fours. The incident ended his night with a disappointing 18th place finish and placed a huge dent in his Eastern Storm title chances where he dropped form 2nd to 8th, and in the National Sprint points in which he fell from 2nd to 5th.
Four lapped cars separated race leader Courtney and second-running Windom on the lap 25 restart, negating any reasonable chance for Windom to toss a slider for the lead heading into turn one. Instead, all Windom could do was stay pat on the topside while the lappers cooperated on the bottom. Once again, any notion of anyone else having a shot at taking down Courtney was all for naught as Courtney opened it up to a lead of three seconds while Leary tried to step up a spot by challenging Windom, to no avail.
Courtney finished off a sterling performance by setting his fastest lap of the race on the 30th and final lap that ultimately resulted in his second career Eastern Storm victory by 3.15 seconds over Windom, Leary, Stockon and Justin Grant.

Courtney fell the struggle was real in the first two rounds this week with 4th and 6th place runs at Grandview and Bridgeport, respectively. The prevailing feeling was that they needed to return to the basics and remember why they do what they do in the first place, and when winning is part of the equation, the fun never seems to find an end.
"We've been banging our heads against the wall just trying to figure out what we're doing," Courtney explained. "I think we just came to the conclusion that we weren't really having fun. So, we went back to the basics, 'have some fun.' (Port Royal) is a place that suits our style, high speed, and when you get to run it nice and straight up against the wall like that, it's a lot of fun."
Courtney's win was the 19th of his USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car career, moving him to within two of 1967 series champion Greg Weld's 21 victories for 28th on the all-time list.

Butler, Nixon, Holzwarth and Krushinski All Win First At New Egypt
New Egypt, NJ – It was a night of firsts at New Egypt Speedway as there were four first time feature winners on Jackson/Wrightstown/North Hanover night. Mike Butler picked up his first career Vahlco Wheels Modified win, Duane Nixon scored his first Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars feature event win, Robbie Holzwarth won the Crate Modified feature and Ryan Krushinski was the winner in the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman division.
Billy Osmun III led the Vahlco Wheels Modified’s to the green flag and would get out to the early lead. Osmun would lead the first four laps of the 30-lap affair until the first yellow flag flew when PJ Oliver came to a stop in turn number four. Osmun would lead the field back to the green on the ensuing restart but it would be Mike Butler jumping out to the lead clearing Osmun off of turn two. Ryan Krachun would be the man on the move as he charged up to fourth place behind Butler, Osmun and Kevin Vaclavicek.
Butler would continue to lead the way over the course of the next 22 laps when John McClelland came to a stop in turn two. Under the caution for McClelland Ryan Godown went pitside with a left-rear flat tire. On the restart Butler would again jump out to the lead but less than a lap later the yellow flag would come unfurled again when Pat Wall spun off of turn four. Butler again would jump out to the lead following the yellow. Brandon Grosso would enter the top-5 for the first time on lap 27. Butler would take the white flag as the leader but the final caution would wave on lap 29 when Danny Bouc came to a stop on the frontstretch setting up a one-lap dash for the win. Butler would again jump out to the lead and beat Osmun back to the stripe to pick up his first career Modified win. Kevin Vaclavicek, Ryan Krachun and Brandon Grosso would round out the top 5.
“We had some bad luck last week and this is a hell of a way to capitalize on it. It’s been years since I’ve seen Victory Lane. The last thing I wanted to see was caution after caution going for your first win. I can’t thank everyone enough that makes this possible”, said Butler postrace.
Duane Nixon jumped out to the lead during the Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Car feature event and would not look back as he as well picked up his first career victory over Brad Schaale, Kevin Nealls, Eric Degler and Chace Leahy.
Robbie Holzwarth III also would score his first career Crate Modified feature event as he controlled virtually the entire distance. Holzwarth would hold off a hard-charging Johnny Bangs. Ryan Heim would come home third with Steve Hicks and Eric Palmer completing the Top-5.
Ryan Krushinski would complete the first career win trifecta winning the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman feature over Anthony Tramontana Jr., DJ Hunt, Zach Merola and Vinny Troia.
New Egypt Speedway is back in action next Saturday night with Graduation Night. In action will be the Vahlco Wheels Modifieds, the Hammer Sportsman, Crate Modifieds, Street Stocks and the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman along with the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club. We will crown our first champion of 2019 next Saturday night in the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman as they will be graduating into the Crate Modified and Hammer Sportsman divisions. All 2019 graduates will receive free grandstand admission with a copy of their diploma. Pit gates will open at 4pm, grandstand turnstiles will unlock at 5pm with hot laps scheduled for 6pm and racing kicking off at 7pm. Adult (16+) admission will be $20, Seniors (65+) are $18, Teens (12-15) & Military w/ID are $10 while Kids 11 & Under are Free.

Kyle Larson opens Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Indy Metal Finishing with convincing victory at Attica Raceway Park
ATTICA, Ohio (June 14, 2019) - Ohio Sprint Speedweek has certainly been kind to Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson, as each of his Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victories have occurred during Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Indy Metal Finishing, including the 2019 opener at Attica Raceway Park.
Larson, pilot of the Chevrolet Accessories/Finley Farms/Priority Aviation/Howard Johnson of Lima/No. 57sprint car, dominated Speedweek competition at the Attica bullring on Friday night, ultimately leading 25 circuits of the 40-lap program and crossing under the final checkers with a margin of victory nearing eight seconds, all while lapping up to the 12th position. The $5,000 victory increased Larson’s Series win total to nine, now with two at Attica Raceway Park; his first since 2016.
“Just a great car all night,” Kyle Larson explained, who will join the All Stars during the next five nights of Ohio Sprint Speedweek. “It was either starting to clean off, or take a little bit of rubber through turns three and four. That made things pretty technical. At times, I felt like I needed to cheat it and run below it to stay on a clean track, but I knew I needed to be in the rubber at the same time. Definitely a fun track. I haven’t raced Attica too much, but this is the slickest Attica I’ve been on, so it’s pretty neat to get a win.”
Although starting from the pole position, ‘Yung Money’ Kyle Larson was beat to the initial punch, forced to follow defending All Star champion and current Series point leader, Aaron Reutzel, for the first 15 circuits. A pair of cautions, one appearing on lap five and another on lap ten, gave Larson a set of opportunities to earn the advantage over Reutzel, but the Clute, Texas-native remained strong and in control.
Unfortunately for Reutzel, but a fortune circumstance for Larson, lap 16 proved to be drama-filled for the front-runners, as a spinning car would create a definite road block leaving Reutzel will little time to react and nowhere to go. Eventual contact with the spinning car ended with Reutzel laying on his side, ultimately ending his evening at Attica Raceway Park. Reutzel’s early retirement inherited the lead to Larson, and that is where he stayed.
Despite Buddy Kofoid’s ability to hang with Larson during the first 15 circuits, actually showing Larson his nose on multiple occasions, the driver of the familiar Ed Neumeister-owned, No. 11N entry was no match for Larson during the latter stages of the main event. Larson eventually escaped in traffic, extending his lead to nearly eight seconds with over half of the field left a lap down.
Six-time All Star champion, Dale Blaney, eventually snuck by Kofoid on lap 27 to secure the second position. Kofoid held on to finish third at the final checkers, followed by DJ Foos and 12th-starting Tim Shaffer.
“I obviously caught a big break when Reutzel got caught up in that wreck. We were a little bit lucky tonight,” Larson continued. “It’s tough when you’re in second and the track is really dirty. I felt like Reutzel was a little bit better than me when he was leading, but then, once I was the leader, I felt like I was better than I had been when I was behind him.”
“I could actually see [Buddy] Kofoid to my inside at the beginning when I was in second, so when I got the lead, I kept peeking to my inside every corner waiting for him to show a nose.”
Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Indy Metal Finishing will continue on Saturday evening, June 15, at the World’s Greatest Dirt Track - Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Fans should take note that Eldora Speedway’s event schedule has been modified with the intent to avoid threatening weather.
Saturday’s schedule now has the pit area opening to competitors at 1:30 p.m., the grandstands opening to spectators at 2 p.m., the All Star Circuit of Champions driver meeting beginning at 3:15 p.m., and hot laps on track at 4:10 p.m., sharp. BACON THE LAST MAN STANDING IN DRAMA-FILLED WILLIAMS GROVE 100

Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania (June 14, 2019).........For Brady Bacon, it was the best of times. For Steve Buckwalter and Chris Windom, in particular, it was the worst of times.
That about sums up the Helter Skelter roller coaster ride of emotions among the top-three drivers during the final laps of Friday's "Williams Grove 100" USAC Silver Crown race at Williams Grove Speedway.
For Bacon, the times couldn't have gotten any better as he avoided the misfortune in front of him. On the 100th and final lap, second-running Windom got into the rear bumper of Buckwalter, sending Buckwalter spinning out of the race lead.
On the ensuing restart, Windom, the new race leader, led the field into turn one on the final lap only to see his right rear tire give out, handing the lead to Bacon who ended the drama once-and-for-all by cruising the last three-quarters of a lap to capture his first career USAC Silver Crown win.
Bacon's score came in his 23rd series start aboard his Beast Chassis - Wilwood Disc Brakes - Hoosier Racing Tire-sponsored Beast/Ford, the second-straight win for the Klatt Enterprises No. 6 following Kyle Hamilton's victory on the pavement at Brownsburg, Indiana's Lucas Oil Raceway in May.
Bacon, the two-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champ out of Broken Arrow, Okla., started third, but dropped to sixth on the opening circuit which, though had him a tad worrisome, became an afterthought as he preserved his equipment and steadily moved up as the race wore on, running fourth as late as nine laps remaining with Buckwalter, Kody Swanson and Windom sitting ahead of him in the pecking order.
Following the lap 90 restart, Bacon surged from fourth to third to second between laps 91 and 93 and was challenging for the lead. Just a lap earlier, Swanson had slid by Buckwalter for the lead in turn one with just a bit too much gusto, sliding up just out of the bottom groove as Buckwalter didn't fret and drove back by underneath.
That opened up the door exiting turn two, allowing Bacon to sweep past Swanson to second as the field passed under the legendary back straightaway bridge, while Windom presented an inside challenge to Swanson entering the third turn. Windom's right front and Swanson's left rear tangled not once, but twice in between turns three and four, forcing Swanson wide off turn four and allowing Windom to take the third position.
Bacon challenged Buckwalter for the lead entering the outside of turn three on three consecutive laps to no avail. With five to go and Bacon unable to make the lane up from the bottom work to his liking, Windom took advantage and skirted underneath on the low line to grab second.
"It took me a lap to get going before I could start trying to squeeze on the outside of turn three," Bacon recalled. "But Buckwalter was really smart. He races a lot here, so he was keeping himself just far out enough to where I couldn't get a run on him, and then I slid out."
The top-four of Buckwalter, Windom, Bacon and Swanson ran practically nose-to-tail entering the conclusion. Heading into turn one on the final lap, though, local favorite Buckwalter from Royersford, Pa., a nine-time wing sprint car and five-time ARDC Midget winner at Williams Grove, seemed poised and primed to capture his first career Silver Crown victory in his 25th series start.
That's when the complexion of the race, and seemingly the universe, turned on its figurative head. Second-running Windom entered turn one a couple car lengths behind Buckwalter. Windom tagged Buckwalter's rear bumper with his own front bumper, turning Buckwalter sideways and, ultimately, to a stop in the middle of turn one. Windom barely escaped to the outside behind Buckwalter's tail tank while third-running Bacon snuck by underneath without getting caught in the melee.
Buckwalter didn't mince words in his thoughts of what happened just three-quarters of a lap away from payday.
"I knew I had to get in low and protect the bottom," Buckwalter explained. "I was running as hard as I had to (in order) to make that happen. I just feel bad for all the PA fans. We had them beat. I don't know what else to say. I guess he just didn't want to get second, but he just drove through me."
"You don't get that many opportunities to win one of these," Buckwalter continued. "We only run (Silver Crown Cars) four or five times a year. It's kind of out of my element. These guys are driving non-wing sprint cars all the time and I maybe run half a dozen midget races a year. To get out there and drive from eighth to the lead, and not touch anybody, and on the last corner to have somebody drive through your rear bumper, it's just heartbreaking."
From Windom's point of view, he admitted he just plainly misjudged the entry to turn one.
"I obviously misjudged it and I feel terrible about it," Windom admitted. "I'd been battling brake issues the last 40 laps of the race and he got in so slow and low to protect the bottom. Once the white flag came out, I got excited going down the front stretch and I got in too hard. I had my left foot through the floor trying to slow the car down. I just knew at that point that I had gotten in way too hard. I tried to turn up at the last second, but it just ended up catching him even harder with the bumper and spun him. I can't change it now. I had a bad misjudgment there."
Brady Bacon's win Friday night was actually his second in USAC competition at Williams Grove Speedway, following his ARDC victory in 2017.

That set up a green-white-checker finish. Though there was a tad fretfulness at the beginning, Bacon's car had come to life late. Once he gained a close-up look of the leader's tire situation, he knew there was blood in the water.
"I knew we had a better car at the end," Bacon noted. "I was a little worried when we weren't very good at the beginning, then I saw some tire issues come about. Buckwalter's tire was looking pretty bad and Windom's was looking bad. Once they had that little altercation over there, that gave us an extra lap. I knew that wasn't good for Windom because I could see his cords."
At that point, it was all about hanging on, although Windom still had the feeling that despite all the indicators he was feeling, he would still be able to preserve enough rubber to make it to the end.
"I knew it was low; I could feel it shaking down the straightaway," Windom remembered. "But I thought it was going to be enough to last to the end, but it just wasn't."
As Windom's tire went down, forcing him to slip up the racetrack in turn one, Bacon scooted underneath and it was in the books as Bacon drove away and got out of Dodge to claim one of the most drama-filled last laps in USAC Silver Crown history. Although confident, another yellow could've thrown a wrench into the deal for Bacon with tire wear weighing heavily on the mind and a hard-charging four-time champ in Swanson could have possibly resulted in a different outcome.
"Coming off turn two, maybe," Bacon explained when he thought he had the win sewn up. "But then I'm like, there's no telling who's behind me. I don't know how much I slowed down to miss (Windom), but I was pretty confident I had it. I was just hoping they didn't throw the yellow. It feels like I should've won a couple of these, but glad to get my first one," a cheerful Bacon said. "I love coming out here to PA. This is a really cool place to win a race."
Swanson finished six-tenths of a second behind Bacon in the second spot ahead of Fatheadz Eyewear pole winner Justin Grant in third. KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Mike Haggenbottom earned a career-best fourth from the 15th starting spot while Eric Gordon rounded out the top-five.
The breakthrough win for Bacon comes following consecutive second place finishes in Silver Crown competition at The Grove for the Klatt team, with drivers Bryan Clauson (2016) and Damion Gardner (2017). It's the first Silver Crown win for a Klatt-owned car on dirt and the first of any kind on dirt in USAC National competition since a 2011 Sprint Car win with Bobby East an hour and a half east at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa.
Friday's win marked Bacon's second career USAC-sanctioned win at Williams Grove following his ARDC Midget win in June of 2017.
Contingency award winners Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway included Justin Grant (Fatheadz Eyewear Fast Qualifier), Mike Haggenbottom (KSE Racing Products Hard Charger) and Shane Cottle (WIlwood Brakes 13th Place Finisher).

Brian Brown dominates World of Outlaws field to win at Knoxville Raceway
There was gravitas in Brian Brown’s yell. After slapping the top wing of his Casey’s General Stores/FVP No. 21 Sprint Car, he held his right fist in the air and stared out to the crowd with the expression of an alpha predator after claiming his territory.
Brown won his first World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series race of 2019 at Knoxville Raceway Friday night, and his fourth win in four starts, this year at the iconic raceway.
“It’s huge,” Brown said, holding his emotion back with chuckles. “I dreamed of racing and saying, ‘I hope when I win my first Outlaw show, I can win it at Knoxville.’”
It wasn’t his first World of Outlaws win. Instead, his fifth. That doesn’t make it any less special, though. He wanted a World of Outlaws win at the track he considers home.
“That was my goal,” Brown said. “But I won at North Carolina. Then we won the next two in Arizona. Then I finally win one in Kansas, but it’s still not home. This is.”
To claim the win, he had to fend off Daryn Pittman and Shane Stewart – both winners already this season – and 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz. Beating the eminent World of Outlaws competition meant Brown had to be aggressive.
“My mindset the whole while, really all night, was to just be aggressive,” Brown said. “If there was an opportunity to do something, go.”
He took that opportunity in the first turn on the initial start. Polesitter Daryn Pittman fired to the lead past second-place Shane Stewart and took his Roth Motorsports No. 83 to the high side going into turn one. At the same time, Brown had made his way underneath Stewart and threw a daring slide job into turn one, clearing Stewart and Pittman at the apex of the corner.
Brown’s car then slid to the high side of turn two, a car length ahead of Pittman. Exiting the turn, Pittman could get as close as Brown’s bumper before the white No. 21 rocketed down the back stretch, putting about a three-car length distance between first and second-place.
“We got a good start there and got by Shane, and I didn’t really know what Daryn was going to do… I went on across,” Brown said. “I thought that was very important.”
Brown continued to grow his lead over Pittman until a caution on Lap two for Sammy Swindell who lost power on the front stretch.
On the restart, Brown launched to the lead, clearing Pittman going into turn one. Like the original start, Pittman closed to Brown’s bumper exiting turn two, but that was as close as he would get to the lead again all night. Brown sped away, putting almost half a track distance between he and Pittman 10 laps into the 25-lap Feature.
The three-time Knoxville Raceway track champion – two in a 410 Sprint Car, one in a 360 – cruised around the half-mile raceway like it was a house he built. Lap cars only made Brown faster. He stayed aggressive, passing two or three of the slower cars at a time.
“I knew it was going to be tough to pass lap cars,” Brown said. “I knew I had to make my moves count. If I could get a chance to get two or three at the same time, we had to do that. Because that just makes it harder for the guys behind.”
Brown took the checkered flag four seconds ahead of second-place Pittman. He led all 25 laps. Stewart finished third, after dueling with Schatz for the position.
Pittman showed speed all night, finishing second in his Drydene Heat race and winning the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – after getting the outside pole starting position in the Dash draw.
While he didn’t leave with the win, Pittman was still pleased with the overall performance.
“That’s the closest I’ve ever been to the front or seeing the front here,” Pittman said. “This is not a great race track for me. So, for me, to feel like I could keep him (Brown) in my sights was a huge accomplishment for myself and this race team. All and all, my car was pretty close. I’ve just got to make a few better decisions and maybe get our car a little better.”
His second top-five in-a-row has now left him tied for third in points with David Gravel, who finished ninth. Brad Sweet continues to lead – now by 10 points over Schatz, who finished one spot ahead of him Friday night; Schatz, fourth, and Sweet, fifth.
Brown, not running full-time with the World of Outlaws, isn't concerned about points. He’s here for wins. And when it comes to Knoxville Raceway, he’s solidified himself as the current alpha.
“I’ve been here before where I’ve maybe been the fastest car at Knoxville, but come to these (World of Outlaws) races I kind of lay an egg, or finish fourth or fifth, which is laying an egg for us,” Brown said. “It’s good to be able to have a fast race car and capitalize on that. We’ll celebrate tonight and get back to the drawing board tomorrow.”
