(June 8, 2019): Defending Modified champion David VanHorn of Harmony, NJ captured his first Vahlco Wheels Modified feature event of 2019 in thrilling fashion Saturday night at New Egypt Speedway. In a race that will be talked about for a long time, VanHorn grabbed the lead from Pat Wall and Ryan Krachun with just two laps remaining and held on for his 7th career win ay NES. The trio had a spirited battle over the final 5 laps, racing three-wide on several occasions including the race-winning pass.
“We weren’t good on the outside early in the race”, exclaimed a jubilant VanHorn in the winner’s circle, “The moisture was coming up on the low side and you just had to be patient. It was a tough week and our team really needed this win tonight!”
Blaine Bracelin & John Pakenham brought the 24-car field to the start for the second week in a row. On the second attempt the two made contact with both bringing out the yellow after collecting Billy Osmun and Wade Hendrickson. With a new front row of Pat Wall and Ryan Krachun the race was on with Wall getting the lead only to see Krachun make a nice pass and assume command. Krachun pulled out quickly to a half straightaway lead while battles raged behind him throughout the top ten. When the caution appeared on lap 9 this gave Wall another shot at the leader and on the restart Wall went back out in front with Krachun working on the inside of him. Lap 12 found tenth starting Davey Sammons racing into third and challenging the leaders. Sammons made it a three car battle until the yellow flag flew just before the halfway point of the event. The restart was wild as the top ten shuffled positions behind the lead duo and last weeks winner Ryan Godown charged into third from his 16th starting position. Godown began pressuring the leaders as defending champ David VanHorn, who had been treading water in the back of the top ten suddenly found a bite on the bottom of the speedway. With ten laps remaining Wall continued to hold off a fast and persistent Krachun on the high groove as VanHorn raced by Godown into third and caught the leaders. The three raced together in close quarters and as the flagger signaled five laps to go each decided it was time to make their move. What ensued brought the crowd to their feet as the trio raced side by side and at times three wide for the top spot with Wall continuing to be shown the leader each lap. As the two-to-go signal was given DVH finally found the grip he had been patiently waiting for on the inside as all three cars raced side by side for the lead and he surged to the front. Wall and Krachun were both not done as the stayed right with VanHorn challenging the veteran over the final two circuits but it proved to be VanHorn’s night as he crossed the stripe just in front of Wall. Krachun settled for a very close third ahead of point leader Billy Pauch Jr. and Davey Sammons.
The Hammer Sportsman 20 lap feature saw three-time champion Bob Lineman Jr. post his first win of the season and 21st of his career. Lineman used a late race restart to charge from 4th to the lead on the high side of the track passing leader Jim Housworth, who settled for a hard fought second. Joseph Brown, last week’s winner Steve Davis and 2018 Rookie champ Ryan Heim rounded out the top five.
The Lyons Construction/MetalFab Rookie feature was won for the fourth time by point leader Anthony Tramontana Jr. as he bested DJ Hunt by three car lengths. Ryan Krushinski finished third followed by Zach Merola.
The Mike’s Performance 4-Cylinders were won for the third time this season by point leader Mike Fox. Fox inherited the lead on lap 11 when leader Dom Antonelli suffered a broken motor. Justin Dunn chased Fox across the finish line followed by 2 time winners TJ Graves and Joe Garey Sr. with Jim Avery completing the top five.
The Street Stock feature was won Bill Liedtka for the third time this year. Liedtka beat out Jim Avery and Joe Reid for his 29th career Street Stock triumph at NES.
Next week Sat. night June 15th it is Jackson Twp. night at New Egypt Speedway. All residents of nearby Jackson NJ will receive free general admission into the speedway with proof of residency. The Vahlco Wheels Modifieds headline the evening joined on the track by the Larry’s Hot Rods and Harley’s NEWS Sprint cars, Crate Modifieds, and the Lyons Construction/MetalFab Rookie Sportsman. In addition the annual Father’s Day races will take place at the end of the night, as the driver’s dads will jump into their son’s cars and challenge each other. Admission will be $20 for Adults, and gates will open at 5pm, with warm-ups at 6pm and the first race taking place at 7pm.

Brad Sweet overcomes mistake to win big at Granite City Speedway
A rapid of blood forced its way through hearts of thousands. Beats per minute spiked to the redline.
Leader Brad Sweet hit the cushion exiting turn four at Granite City Speedway Saturday night, launching his NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 car several inches off the track. With David Gravel breathing down his neck, he was about to lose a jackpot of a night.
Not only was he en route to claiming another World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win, after four podium finishes in-a-row, he was destined to reclaim the points lead due to points leader Donny Schatz not finishing the race.
His error sent a wave of shock, excitement and qualm among the crowd.
Under Sweet’s helmet, there was nothing but focus. No shock. No thrill. No qualm. His heart, beating as normal – as normal as a heart does in a 900hp Sprint Car.
“I’ve been on the tour long enough that I don’t let the emotions get to me,” Sweet said.
That mentality led to him overcoming his mistake and claiming his third Series win this season at the Sauk Rapids, Minn. speedway – his 37th career Series win overall. And the points lead.
“I was bound and determined I think to win that one,” Sweet said. “I’m just happy to get the win.”
At the start of the 35-lap Feature, Sweet was a cheetah among kittens. He rocketed by polesitter Gravel for the lead on the initial start and pulled away by half a track.
Sweet caught lap traffic by Lap six and was lapping up to 14th-place by Lap 15. There was no catching the blue and yellow Kasey Kahne Racing car.
However, once the race reached the halfway point, Gravel began to reel Sweet in. The obstacle course of lap cars Sweet had mastered became a cluster of road blocks.
Then, with 11 laps to go, the unimaginable happened. Ten-time Series champion Schatz hit the wall exiting turn four, destroying the rear end birdcage and ending his night.
On the following restart, Gravel snuck underneath Sweet, slid up in front of him in turn one and launched to the lead.
“I just spun my tires,” Sweet said. “I was too anxious to make sure I got the jump. Once you get spinning there’s really no way to get your tires back.”
Sweet wasn’t ready to let another win slip away. He followed Gravel’s tracks, riding the high side of the speedway, keeping the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 in sight.
With seven laps to go, Gravel bounced his car off the cushion exiting turn four, drastically killing his speed. Sweet then threw his car underneath Gravel going into turn one and slid back in front of him.
Sweet's next trip around turn four crashed a wave of shock, excitement and qualm into the crowd. He hammered the cushion, sending his front end toward the wall. While he wrestled to stay off the white barrier, Gravel turned back underneath Sweet and reclaimed the lead.
Sweet was bound and determined, though.
With a Hail Mary slide job, he hurled his car to the bottom of the turn one and slid up in front of Gravel exiting turn two. The lead was his. And in the next few laps, the win was, too.
“All you can do is try your hardest and sometimes when you over try bad things happen,” Sweet said about having to rebound from hitting the cushion. “I thought we had the superior car, so I was frustrated with myself I was even in that position. But it played out right. You’re going to win some of those. You’re going to lose some of those. Luckily, tonight we got the win.”
When Sweet sped away with the lead, Gravel was left having to defend second from a hard charging Logan Schuchart in third-place.
“It was a good effort. It was a good race,” Gravel said. “He (Sweet) just pulled away from us early, but I kind of let him go and hopefully I was going to be better than him.”
Schuchart claimed his fourth win of the season Friday night at River Cities Speedway to become the winningest driver, so far, this year. However, he said then his team still needed to put together consistent podium finishes. Saturday night’s third-place run was a good start to that.
“This is definitely what we’re talking about,” Schuchart said. “You always want to win, but this is the consistency we’re talking about.”
Sweet’s consistency of five podium finishes in-a-row has led to him holding a 12-point lead over, now second-place, Schatz. He doesn’t let the emotions of battling for the points lead get to him either.
“Honestly, I don’t pay much attention to the points,” Sweet said. “I don’t want Donny to have a 200-point lead because our goal is to win the championship. But I also know that there are stretches of races that if you’re not running good the points can shift so much.
“At the beginning of my career with the Outlaws, I would look at the points after every race. Now I’m lucky to look at it every three or four races and kind of see where things are at. I know if we’re running good and (Schatz) is behind us we’re going to be gaining. If he’s in front of us every night, then he’s going to be ahead of us. The points will take care of themselves. We’re 26 races into an 80-race schedule. Really, June, July and August are what set the tone for the points. Honestly, we just want to win races.”
They’re bound and determined to do so.

WINDOM BREAKS THROUGH FOR FIRST MIDGET WIN AT THE BURG

Lawrenceburg, Indiana (June 8, 2019).........All throughout "Indiana Midget Week," Chris Windom was confident that he had a car to win. Yet, when it came time to start the first four feature events this week, the Canton, Ill. driver found himself seemingly light years away from his destination.
Through the first four nights, no driver had passed more cars than Windom (42), an astonishing 24 more than his nearest competition. But that's what happens when you start 11th, 23rd, 14th and 22nd. He got up on the wheel on each of those nights and drove to finishes of 10th, 9th, 5th and 4th.
Just imagine the shot in the arm he felt in Saturday's penultimate round of IMW at Lawrenceburg Speedway when he qualified 2nd and secured the 5th starting spot for the 30-lap feature. The same refrain lingered in his mind all week. "If only..."
"I knew we've had fast cars all week," Windom said. "We've just been behind the eight ball early in the night all week and have had to come from 20th, 21st and 16th. Like I've been saying all week, if we start up front, I think we can pull one off."
Few drivers had ever had to wait as long as Windom to reach victory lane in USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget competition, 102 starts to be exact. Finally, that night arrived for the 2016 USAC Silver Crown and 2017 AMSOIL National Sprint Car champion on Saturday.
Even before the green flag dropped, track position was key. Scheduled outside front row starter Jerry Coons, Jr. had a left rear tire go flat, sending him to the work area for new rubber and a new starting spot from the tail. That moved previous night's Bloomington winner and National point leader Tyler Courtney up to the outside of the front row, where he took full advantage.
Initially, Shane Golobic took his brief turn at the point, sliding past Courtney on the start in between turns one and two. Courtney, using the "mo" from the topside, drove downhill off turn two to zip past the 2017 IMW champ. Golobic took another shot in turn three, but Courtney was ready, countered off turn four and shot away to a 2.5 second lead.
Sixth-running Andrew Layser clipped the infield berm in turn three on the sixth lap, spinning sideways up to the middle of the racetrack where all incomers were able to scatter and dodge contact with the car of the series Rookie of the Year contender.
On the restart, Windom made quick work to get by Golobic and set forth toward CMR teammate Courtney and the race lead. Entering turn one on lap seven, Windom dove to the bottom, sliding up the hill past Courtney who turned down and drove back past Windom midway down the back straight. Windom shot to the bottom of turn three and stuck it, riding the low line by Courtney to secure the top spot at the stripe.
The following lap, Courtney arched turns one and two like a three-point line around the top to get a massive run that took him underneath Windom as the two hit turn three. Windom, though, slammed the lid on Courtney's fingers, keeping him in check behind him.
"When I got to Courtney, it was about being in the right place at the right time," Windom explained. "He messed up on the cushion and I hit the bottom just right that lap and got a big run to throw a slider on him into one. That worked out just out of luck, but I knew we had a car that could win."
At the halfway mark, similarly to how he executed the night prior at Bloomington, Seavey began to surge, sliding by Courtney for second in turn one on lap 16 before turning up the pressure on Windom. Seavey put his right rear up on the cushion all the way around the 3/8-mile dirt oval, while Windom switched it up with a rim-riding line in one and two and the catfish line in three and four.
On the 22nd lap, heartbreak befell Courtney who ran third as he slowed with a flat right rear tire, sending him to the tail where he eventually finished 15th, putting a damper on his hopes for a first "Indiana Midget Week" title following runner-up finishes in each of the last two years.
For the first two laps following the ensuing restart, March "Shamrock Classic" winner Cannon McIntosh poked his nose under Seavey for second. The two ran side-by-side for a back-to-back laps before Seavey cleared him around the outside of four for second and aimed to make a run at Windom.
With three laps remaining, Seavey had not only caught Windom, but slid by him into one to take the lead. Windom countered and matched him wheel-to-wheel to the bottom of three. Windom stuck the bottom again and throttled off the corner to edge Seavey by the width of dzus button. As the pair headed into turn one with two laps remaining, the caution fell for fifth-running Michael Pickens of New Zealand, whose hard luck week continued as he slowed off turn four. That set up one final restart, and one final opportunity to receive last-minute final instruction as it turned out.

"On the last restart, Rizzy (Crew Chief Tyler Ransbottom) told me to get up on the wheel," Windom recalled. "So, I knew that Seavey was probably ripping the top. I had to slide myself to kill his momentum because you could throw big sliders into one. I hadn't been to the top in three and four the whole race and went up there with a prayer, and it worked."
Sliding himself into turn one prevented a patented Burg slide-job from Seavey and, getting into turn three a half-lap later, Windom threw a proverbial Tom Candiotti knuckleball by going topside. Seavey jumped the cushion between three and four, allowing Windom to break away while Chad Boat and Tanner Thorson went into Blue Angels formation, surrounding Seavey.
Boat streamed through the middle between one and two on the final lap as Seavey got above the cushion again, this time at the exit of two, allowing Boat to slip away into the night with second.
At last, Windom's pressure was normalized as he arrived off turn four with the checkered flag in clear view without too much of a challenge to capture his long-awaited first series win by 0.607 sec. over Boat, Seavey, Thorson and McIntosh.
With 23 career USAC Sprint and 8 Silver Crown triumphs, it's almost hard to believe it took Windom this long to enter his name onto the list of USAC National Midget winners. He's won twice in USAC Regional Midget action, in 2008 at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway and in 2016 at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway, but it was Saturday's win at Lawrenceburg that stands above the rest.
"I was at a loss for words in victory lane," Windom said. "I haven't run a lot of midgets in the past few years, but I've been trying for a long time. We've been working our butts off over here trying to get me in victory lane. I know this is just as sweet for everybody on this team as it is for me."

Hafertepe Tops Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series Speedweek With Salina Speedway Victory

(June 8, 2019) Earning his fifth win of the season, and 42nd overall with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. picked up his first career victory at Salina Speedway in Salina, Kan. and in doing so, secured his second career ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek title.
Getting the outside of the front row for Saturday's 30-lap affair, Hafertepe, trailed into the first two turns as Blake Hahn led the way. Slight contact battling for the top spot into the third turn, Hafertepe was able to edge out the Sage Fruit, Co. No. 52 to lead the opening lap.
"I knew I had to get to the lead early and get to the bottom and I ended up getting into Blake down the backstretch, and I didn't mean too. Just trying to get to the bottom otherwise, we could have easily ended up second or third all night," commented Hafertepe.
Finding traffic by Lap 8, the driver of the Townline Variety No. 15 picked off several slower cars to open his advantage to well over a straightaway as Blake Hahn battled for the runner-up spot with John Carney II. Caution on Lap 19 for Tanner Berryhill, who spun in the fourth turn, Hafertepe's lead was 5.396 seconds.

Restarting with four lapped cars in the mix, Hafertepe bolted as John Carney II worked around Blake Hahn for second. Taking the slower cars down to two before the caution flew again on Lap 23 for Grady Chandler who rolled to a stop after contact with Alex Hill, the restart saw Carney drive deep into the first turn, clearing the remaining slower machine and pulling almost even with Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Racing hard into turn three, Sam held point before yellow lights flashed again; this time for Fred Mattox and Matt Covington.
With no slower cars between himself and Sam Hafertepe, Jr., the Lap 24 restart saw Carney swap up his attack with a high side run to pull his Mesilla Valley Transportation No. J2 side by side again with Hafertepe. Able to run deep and swing to the center through turns three and four, Sam was able to put distance over Carney.
One final chance to battle of the lead as the field set up for a green, white, checkered finish after Robbie Price and Fred Mattox came together off the second turn, Carney couldn't mount the charge as Sam Hafertepe, Jr. grabbed the win by 2.033 seconds.
Asked about the restarts and being pressured, Hafertepe replied, "We just didn't have a lot of bite going straight to the throttle and actually we've had the problem several times. I was just trying to time it right. [John] Carey is good and he's a smart racer, so I knew I had to do my job, or I'd be having to block into one and two so to come out on top was really good. I've never won here before, so this is really cool and I have to say, from the track we had at the start of the night to what they gave us at the end was a hell of a job to the track crew."
John Carney II's 13th podium appearance with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network, Jordon Mallett used the race's last restart to work past Blake Hahn for his first career National Tour podium finish. Hahn in fourth was trailed to the line by Harli White.
Battling around the top five most of the night, Scott Bogucki ended up sixth with Roger Crockett seventh. Involved in an early caution and having to fight back from the tail, Grady Chandler came bake to finish eighth. Sean McClelland was ninth with Tanner Berryhill also rebounding from a caution to finish tenth.
A field of 21 was broken down into a trio of SCE Gaskets Heat Races with Harli White, Blake Hahn, and Scott Bogucki each earning wins. No Provisional starts were needed. Speedweek standings with Sam Hafertepe, Jr. earning the crown by 43 markers had John Carney II, Blake Hahn, Scott Bogucki, and Harli White complete the top five in driver standings.
The next events for the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network are promoted by Track Enterprises with Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen, S.D. on Friday, June 14 and Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D. on Saturday, June 15.

Dale Blaney goes wire-to-wire for first All Star victory since 2016
BUSTI, N.Y. (June 8, 2019) - For the first time in nearly three years, Hartford, Ohio’s Dale Blaney is back in Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory lane, adding Stateline Speedway in Busti, New York, to a win list that now includes 135 Series victories.
Piloting the Sam McGhee Motorsports-owned No. 11, Blaney was under immense pressure during his 30-lap trip to Stateline Speedway victory lane, first forced to deal with NASCAR Hall of Famer, Tony Stewart, then defending All Star champion and current Series point leader, Aaron Reutzel. To top things off, Blaney was also forced to end the program with an infamous green-white-checkered restart, ultimately persevering, crossing under the final checkers with Reutzel and Stewart in tow.
“It kinda sucks to have that happen, especially when the finish is that close,” Dale Blaney said, a six-time All Star champion and National Sprint Car Hall of Famer. “Regardless, it all worked out for us in the end. Things are getting better and better for this team right now. We’ve been changing a lot of things around on this car and I’m starting to get more and more comfortable. Hopefully we can get another one of these tomorrow night at Weedsport and head into Ohio Sprint Speedweek on a positive note.”
From the pole position, Blaney led the field to green, eventually earning the initial jump over fellow front row starter, Skylar Gee, and third-starting Tony Stewart. By the time the leaders reached the flagstand for the first time, Stewart already worked his way to second, instantly setting his aim on the tailtank of Dale Blaney.
By lap seven, lapped traffic was already a factor giving Blaney the opportunity to run and hide from Stewart and now third-running Aaron Reutzel, who battled his way to third around Skylar Gee by the completion of lap three. Despite Blaney’s ability to navigate slower cars, Stewart stayed hot on his heels, eventually making a bid for the top spot as the pair raced off of turn four to complete lap 11.
A two-car battle for the lead eventually turned into a three-car battle, as Reutzel was able to chase down the lead pair to a mere-car length by lap 18. In hot pursuit of the two positions ahead, Ruetzel did everything he could to power around Stewart for second, attempting slide job after slide for the next three circuits, only to be denied with Stewart driving back underneath the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports No. 87. Although Stewart and Reutzel battled vigorously, the pair still managed to reel in Blaney. The Low Rider’s only saving grace was a caution on lap 21, ending a near-chaotic and exciting battle for the top-three positions.
Utilizing the ensuing single-file restart, Reutzel finally put Stewart behind him, driving underneath the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion through the bottom of turns one and two. With second now in his control, Reutzel could finally set his aim on Blaney.
With less than two circuits remaining, Reutzel made his move, reeling Blaney in to less than a car length before attempting a bonzai slider between turns three and four. With mere-inches separating himself from the outside retaining wall, as well as Reutzel’s right rear tire, Blaney squeezed through, maintaining control as the leaders raced under the white flag.
Just as Blaney turned the final corner, yellow flags waved again, ultimately forcing a green-white-checkered restart with Reutzel and Stewart breathing down his neck.
All Star Circuit of Champions rules mandate that races be completed with two, consecutive green flag laps, thus forcing the main event’s distance to be stretched to 31 circuits. Despite the extra lap, Blaney prevailed, keeping Reutzel in his rearview mirror for the $5,000 payday.
“There wasn’t a lot of room separating myself from the outside wall,” Blaney continued. “There was probably less than a car length left, but I made it fit. Reutzel could have driven in there a little harder and really squeezed me out, but he didn’t. It just feels really, really good to get it done here tonight.”
Aaron Reutzel hung on to finish second at Stateline Speedway, followed by Stewart, Spencer Bayston, and Outlaw Speedway winner, Brock Zearfoss.
With two events down and one to go, Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions will conclude their three-day sweep of the Empire State with a visit to the state-of-the-art Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, N.Y., on Sunday, June 9. Like the two nights prior, the traveling All Stars will once again battle for a $5,000 top prize.
Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, New York, will open pit gates at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 9. FREMONT, Oh. - DJ Foos thought coming into the weekend he needed at least a pair of top three finishes to gain some momentum going into Ohio Sprint Speedweek. He did much better than that.
The Fremont, Ohio driver led all 30 laps of the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint feature Saturday at Fremont Speedway on Vision Quest Night to sweep the weekend for the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Sprint Championship (AFCS) Presented by the Baumann Auto Group. Like Friday's win at Attica Raceway Park, Saturday's victory was worth $4,000 thanks to Spanky's Pizza of Carey.
"This is pretty awesome. Back in the day in 305s me, my dad and brother were pretty good but we never swept a weekend. To do this with the Burmeister crew is pretty awesome. We want to dedicate the win to John Wisbon and his family. I know John drove for them a long time ago and hopefully I'm making him proud up there," Foos said of the late driver who was inducted into the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame earlier in the afternoon.
Foos' 12th career Fremont victory wasn't easy though, as a bobble on the cushion in turns three and four with three laps to go nearly allowed Tim Shaffer to get by. "I kind of got off the back side there. The cushion was getting on the back side of the banking and I was trying to cheat it cause there was a nice little rut to follow through. On that last yellow I saw Shaffer was in third...I knew that wasn't going to last long so I knew I needed to step it up a bit. I had trouble getting around some last cars and I'm sure he made it exciting," Foos said.
"I love Fremont. This is where I grew up watching every weekend as a little kid. To come here now and win with an amazing crowd, great staff and great team...it doesn't get any better than this. Also congrats to Rich Farmer (former Fremont promoter) who got inducted into the hall of fame today. If it wasn't for him I'd have never been in a sprint car," said Foos beside his Jet Express/CR Juices/Crown Battery/Greer Automotive/Burmeister Trophy/KS Sales & Service/Kistler Engines/Kistler Racing Products/NAPA Auto Parts/Dave Story Equipment/Minor Customs backed machine.
Ivy, who celebrated his 50th birthday earlier in the week, battled with fellow veteran Alvin Roepke throughout the 25 non-stop laps of the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature and drove to his 57th career win at "The Track That Action Built." Ivy, who owns 8 track championships at Fremont combined in the 305 sprints, 410 sprints and dirt trucks, now is one shy of tying Jim Linder for fourth on the track's all-time win list.
"You forget to breath some times when you get going and I screwed up a couple of times going into turn one there and thought I was going to give it away. I had to settle down. I grew up watching Jim Linder race and he does our shocks for us now. We stunk the place up last night at Attica but we put our heads together today at the shop and the boys worked their butts off today and made my job a whole lot easier," said Ivy in the Engine Pro Victory Lane of his L&R Farms/C&N Supply/Rohr Lawn care/Sonny's Welding & Machine/Welty Financial/Atkinson Farms/Story Equipment backed #77i.
Ivy has climbed his way back into contention for the KS Sales & Service AFCS Presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales title with the $1,000 victory.
The 20 lap Burmeister Trophy Dirt Truck feature was a barn-burner involving five drivers - Dustin Keegan, Brad Keckler, Jim Holcomb, John Brooks, Kent Brewer - and when the dust settled Keegan, Fremont's 2017 truck champion and 2018 late model champion, claimed his eighth career victory at the track.
"To race my teammate (Keckler) like that was just unreal. We started seventh and tried a little something and I guessed it worked. I love slick tracks like this. It's been two years since I won in the trucks. I want to thank my dad, my fiancée, Dabby, Denny, Brad, Noah, Gappy, Uncle Hoppy and everyone who helps out," said Keegan beside his LST Excavating/Kevin Walby/ Green Creek Lawn Care/MRE of Ohio/York Fabrication backed #17x.
Prior to the night's racing the 11th Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame induction ceremonies took place. Being enshrined in the hall were John Wisbon, Bruce Berryman, Dave Marko, Jerry "Dude" Creeger, Chuck Kear, Rich Farmer, Floyd Slater and Chuck Keegan.
In the 30-lap 410 A-main Brian Smith and Foos brought the field to green with Foos gaining the upper hand. Foos immediately began to pull away from Smith while a tremendous battle ensued for third involving Travis Philo, fast qualifier Justin Peck, Byron Reed, Shaffer, Stuart Brubaker, Craig Mintz and Nate Dussel.
Foos drove into heavy lapped traffic by the 10th circuit but Smith was unable to close while Philo, Peck and Shaffer continued their torrid battle for third. Shaffer would finally move into third on lap 14. The only caution of the race fell on lap 17 for a Ryan Broughton spin and on the restart Foos drove away from Smith who had his hands full with Shaffer. Shaffer drove into second on lap 19 but Foos held a commanding lead.
With a clear track Foos began to pull away as Shaffer and Smith gave chase. Meanwhile a great battle for fourth was underway involving Peck, Philo, Buddy Kofoid and Mintz. Foos encountered heavy lapped traffic with five laps to go and Shaffer began to close with Smith holding off Kofoid. Foos nearly lost the lead in turns three and four with three laps to go but maintained his composure and kept the lead to the checkers over Shaffer, Smith, Kofoid and Peck.
Paul Weaver and Roepke brought the field to green for the 25 lap 305 sprint feature with Roepke taking the lead as fourth starter Ivy bolted into second. Roepke and Ivy raced nose to tail and side by side over the first nine laps until lapped traffic came into play. That's when Ivy pounced and drove into the lead but Roepke didn't give up and raced under Ivy lap after lap.
In a feature that went green to checkers and completed in just over seven minutes, Ivy was never able to complete shake Roepke as they battled in traffic. Ivy didn't make a mistake though and took the checkers over Roepke, Weaver, Brandon Moore and Kyle Peters.
Keith Sorg and Brad Keckler paced the field for the 20 lap dirt truck feature with Keckler gaining a slight advantage over Sorg, Jim Holcomb, Jimmy McGrath Jr., Steve Endicott and Brad Mitten. Meanwhile Dustin Keegan began his march to the front and was third by lap five. The fist caution flew on lap eight with Keckler leading Holcomb, Keegan, McGrath, Kent Brewer, John Brooks and Endicott. Another caution for debris on lap 11 kept the field close.
On the ensuing restart Keckler held Holcomb at bay while Keegan, Brewer and Brooks battled for third. With six laps to go it was a tremendous three truck battle for the lead with Keckler holding off Holcomb and Keegan. That trio raced each other hard over the next couple of laps before Keegan utilized the bottom lane to take the lead with just four laps to go.
Keegan drove to the close win over Holcomb, brooks, Keckler and Brewer.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, June 15 on Fort Ball Pizza Palace Fan with a Can Night (fans are encouraged to bring canned, non-perishable food items for local food pantries. The Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (BOSS) non-wing sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks will be in action. Also the trucks will run their feature events that were cancelled due to weather on May 26.
