Schuchart bucks wild Stockton to become sixth different winner in seven races
STOCKTON, CA — MARCH 16, 2019 — Blue and orange confetti painted the landscape around Logan Schuchart, who climbed to the top wing of his Shark Racing Sprint Car with the checkered flag in one hand and other pointing to the sky.
Thousands of fans cheered, and the first-time winner this season, Schuchart, cheered with them in Victory Lane at the Stockton Dirt Track.
It was a scene that could have looked much different for Schuchart until about five laps to go in Saturday night’s World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series 30-lap FVP Platinum Battery Showdown.
Shark Racing showed they were the apex predator from the start of the event. Hanover, Pa. native Schuchart was quickest in practice, and backed that up qualifying second behind teammate Jacob Allen. He then won his Heat race and drew the pole for the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash, which he also won.
At the start of the Feature, Schuchart and Allen dueled side-by-side in front for less than half a lap before Schuchart shot to the lead. Four cautions in the first six laps never allowed him to get into a rhythm, but he maintained the lead each restart.
Lurking behind him, though, was Bixby, Okla., native Shane Stewart — equally as hungry for his first Series win of the season, after finishing outside the top-10 the day prior. When restarting on lap six, Stewart did not let Schuchart out of his sight. With each passing lap he inched closer and closer to the red-and-white Drydene-sponsored #1s.
Coming off of turn four on lap 11, Schuchart, who had kept his car on the high side of the track, hit a rut, about bounced his car completely off the ground and into the wall, and lost the lead to Stewart.
“I was running pretty hard when I was out by myself,” Schuchart said. “That’s what kind of got me in trouble. I almost flipped the thing, bouncing around, jumping up and down.”
He added to stay consistent on the rough track conditions you had to “cowboy up.”
While Stewart began to pull away to close to a half a track lead, Schuchart didn’t lose hope. He knew Stewart would face the same rough conditions running the top side of the track — providing the potential for his own mistake.
But he never made one. Even when navigating lap traffic. Schuchart still didn’t give up hope.
“I knew he was going to have the same issues, he’s going to want to get out front and stand on it,” Schuchart said. “You can count on probably some more yellows, because we were having one right after the other.”
On lap 23, he got one. Kasey Kahne stopped on the front stretch when his right rear tire gave up, with debris left in turn four. When the race went back green, Stewart maintained the point once again. Until a lap later. His paced slowed, and Schuchart shot by Stewart for the lead with Brad Sweet following to surge into second place. Shortly after, Stewart was off the track in turn three with a flat right rear tire.
“They were saying some stuff may have broke off of Kasey’s (Kahne) car when I was trying to get around him, and I must have ran something over,” Stewart said. “Just one of those deals.”
When the race went back green, Schuchart took command of the lead once again and drove his car into Victory Lane, claiming his ninth World of Outlaws win.
“I thought his (Stewart’s) right rear looked a little low, but I’m not going to be the guy running second and tell him his tire is low, but I knew he wasn’t going to give up,” Schuchart said. “I’m just happy for this whole team. It’s very rewarding for all of their hard work to be able to get a win this early in the season.”
Schuchart is the sixth different Series winner this year in seven races. Carson Macedo, who was the fifth different winner this season Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway pulled off another impressive run finishing seventh after starting 23rd – making him the KSE Hard Charger of the night.
Having as equally of an impressive run was Sheldon Haudenschild, who started 25th using a provisional and finished 10th.
Even though Stewart’s promising night ended with disappointment, he is still leaving with newfound confidence.
“I think we made some big gains throughout the night and learned a lot of stuff,” Stewart said. “We continue to learn. Even Barry (Jackson), you know, he’s been out here a long, long time. But he is dealing with a new driver, so we’re still trying to learn each other. We’re getting better.”
Schuchart’s win moves him to fourth in the Series’ championship points – tied with Macedo, 58 points behind leader Daryn Pittman. The Oklahoma driver finished 11th for his California-based Roth Motorsports team, allowing 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz, who finished 8th, to continue to close the points deficit to just four points.
Quietly closing on the two points leaders is Sweet, who finished second two nights in a row – now 10 points behind Pittman.
“Tonight, it took some juevos, you had to get up on the wheel and try to hammer through the holes (in the track),” Sweet said. “Logan did a good job. It was kind of survival there… Two seconds place, we’re knocking on the door (of the points lead).”
While Sweet took his second-place finish with stride, Schuchart basked in the glory of his win in Victory Lane, confetti still floating to the ground and fans still cheering.
“The fans are awesome (in California),” Schuchart said. “They’re very passionate. It’s awesome to win in front of this great crowd.”
The Series will make its next stop on the California tour Saturday, March 22, at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif. and Saturday, March 23, at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif.

Macedo claims second World of Outlaws win, first with Kyle Larson Racing
CHICO, CA — March 15, 2019 — “Rookie” is a title Carson Macedo will hear before his name throughout the 2019 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series tour, but at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., it should be “veteran.”
Or “winner.”
Lemoore, Calif., native, Macedo, bested 34-time Series winner, and Grass Valley, Calif., native, Brad Sweet in a spectacular dual on Friday night at the quarter-mile speedway, to claim his second ever Series win and second at the track — his first win came in 2014.
His advantage; it’s a track he grew up racing on – local knowledge that paid off as he led an all-Outlaw podium sweep in the Mini Gold Cup presented by Riebes NAPA AUTO PARTS.
“I’ve raced here so much and just know the characteristics of it,” Macedo said. “It’s not a big part of winning these races, but it gives you that edge. It’s a home track for me.”
Sweet is no stranger to Silver Dollar Speedway, though. He, too, grew up racing at the track, and won a race there last year.
Having led more than half the race, Sweet looked to be en route to his second win at the speedway. Last week’s Feature winner at Thunderbowl Raceway, Ian Madsen – who ended up third – hunted Sweet for most of the race with enough speed to potentially make his own challenge for the lead. But then came Macedo.
From his seventh starting spot, Macedo raced much like his car owner Kyle Larson so often does — on the cushion lap after lap. Never considering another line. That confidence almost cost him, though. About half way through the race, he hit a rut on the high side of the track, throwing his car of balance and dropping from fourth to fifth.
That didn’t deter the young rookie’s victory lust. Continuing to stick to the high side of the track, he fought his way into the top three and then traded slide jobs with Madsen for second. In the lead Sweet had a different mentality then Macedo. He stuck to the bottom of the track — a move that ultimately proved to be his downfall.
On a restart with 15 laps to, Macedo got a strong enough run off turn four to slide under Sweet going into turn one and steal the lead. Madsen, on the bottom of the track, tried to best them both, edging Macedo for the lead out of turn two. He couldn’t compete with Macedo’s strength on the high side, though. Once Macedo cleared Madsen, the race was his.
“I had been getting some pretty good runs off of four on the top, with people in front of me, so I knew without anyone there I could get a run on him (Sweet) going down the front stretch,” Macedo said.
Sweet knows his rookie mistake was staying on the bottom of the track.
“Obviously, I made a mistake there, and stayed on the bottom probably one or two restarts too long,” Sweet said. “It was just really hard to get me to change my mind because I kept winning the restarts. But I really felt vulnerable on the restart, so it was no surprise when Carson got by me. You have to be perfect to win these races.”
Madsen went into the Series’ month-long California tour unsure how he’ll perform at the Golden State short tracks, claiming he’s not good at them. In two races, he’s secured two podium finishes — one being a victory.
“It’s (California) has been really good to us, so far,” Madsen said. “We’ve had an awesome race car ever since we got here. I just have to thank my crew for that.”
Macedo also credited his crew for his winning performance, including his crew chief Joe Gaerte, who he called “his hero.” Macedo drove for Gaerte in the All Star Circuit of Champions Series last year, finishing second in points.
With a win in the first six races of the more than 90 race World of Outlaws schedule, Macedo said it won’t change how he approaches the remainder of the season.
“I think I’m just going to race exactly the same,” he said. “Just drive every lap like it’s my last. Wherever the cards fall at the end of the year at the banquet, that’s what they’ll be.”
He currently sits fourth in the Series’ championship points — 66 points behind leader Daryn Pittman.
Pittman, who was coming off two second place finishes in a row, managed to salvage a ninth-place finish after starting 18th. He continues to lead the championship standings for California car owners Dennis and Teresa Roth over second place Donny Schatz, who finished fourth and cut his points deficit in half, now only 10 points behind Pittman.
The Series will make its next stop on the California tour Saturday, March 16, at the Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., where Macedo hopes to utilize his veteran California track skills to once again be called, “winner.”

New Egypt, NJ – David VanHorn celebrated his first career New Egypt Speedway Modified Track Championship worth $10,000 this past Saturday night in front of a packed ballroom at the Clarion of Toms River.
“If you look at some of the names that have won track champions at New Egypt, you have guys like Roger Laureno, Billy Pauch, Jimmy Horton and Frank Cozze. That’s some good company to be in”, said VanHorn. “The competition at New Egypt weekly is about as tough as it is anywhere, they have a lot of talent through out the field and a lot of young talent coming up through the ranks.”
A regular at the Ocean County D-Shaped oval since 2010, DVH notched his title on a base of consistency. VanHorn ended the 2018 NES points race without a points-paying win, nine Top-5’s and 13 Top-10’s in 15 points paying races. The only time VanHorn failed to finish out of the Top-10 was on May 9th following a flat tire and August 18th with a blown motor. David’s only win of the season came in the Non-Points Garden State Gunfight held in June.
“I can’t thank Fred Vahlsing enough for what he has done for me, a few year’s ago he called me while we were on our way to a Deyo race and he asked me to drive his car and I told him I wanted to win championships for him and I’m glad that I can make good on that”, revealed VanHorn. “This all wouldn’t be possible without my family either, they support me no matter what, this one is for them as much as it is me.”
The ageless Karl Freyer was officially crowned the 2018 Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Car champion and announced some exciting news that the legendary Stan Ploski would be driving his car during the 2019 season at New Egypt Speedway.
Bob Lineman Jr. was crowned the Hammer Sportsman champion on the evening. For Lineman, it was his third career NES Track title after winning it previously in 2013 and 2016.
Like VanHorn, Kyle Kania won the 2018 Crate Modified championship with out winning a feature event. Kania announced on Saturday night that he intends on moving up to the Modified ranks at New Egypt Speedway in 2019.
Jon Meyer picked up his first career Street Stock title in 2018 after just a few seasons of racing. He indicated that he would be back to defend his title again in 2019.
Joe Garey Sr. will go down in the history books as New Egypt Speedway’s first ever 4-Cylinder track champion. Garey will also be back to defend his title in 2019.
Ryan Heim was crowned the 2018 Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman champion.
The Top-10 in each division were honored with trophies, while specialty awards went to Brandon Grosso (Best Appearing Car), Kevin Vaclavicek (Most Improved Modified Driver), Brian Spencer (Most Improved Northeast Wingless Sprint Car Driver), David Burns (Most Improved Sportsman Driver), Johnny Bangs (Most Improved Crate Modified Driver) and Ryan Freshneck (Most Improved Street Stock Driver. Noted engine builder Gary Bouc was named the 2018 Overall Track Champion due to his generosity in loaning engines out so that many drivers could keep returning to NES weekly.
New Egypt Speedway is scheduled to open up its gates for the first time next weekend, March 23rd with the March Meltdown that will pay $5,000 to win for the Modifieds, which will be run under Short Track Super Series South rules, with Sail Panels. Madsen Dominates World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars in Tulare
TULARE, CA – March 9 – Last year’s World of Outlaws NOS® Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Ian Madsen claims one of his weak points has been short tracks.
Not anymore.
The Australian won everything there was to win at the third-mile Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., Saturday night. Not even a couple of rain showers could slow him down.
His team has been working hard to get the KCP Racing car better on the California short tracks, and “it showed tonight,” said Madsen, as he earned his first victory of the season with championship leader Daryn Pittman second and Sheldon Haudenschild in third.
Madsen, who hails from St. Mary’s, NSW, Australia, started the night fastest in practice — three tenths faster than second fastest Donny Schatz. He followed that up by claiming his second pole of the season.
Then he dominated the first Heat race of the night, crossing the line about one second ahead of second place Tim Kaeding. That led to him being the first driver to draw for the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash and leaving seven other drivers disappointed by drawing the pole.
A heavy rain shower lingered over the track for about 15 minutes in between Madsen’s Heat and the Dash. It only made him faster. Again, in dominating fashion, he led every lap of the Dash, this time finishing close to two seconds ahead of second-place Pittman.
While he already dominated everything up to the Feature, Madsen showed his true speed in the final 35 laps of the night. He pulled away to an early lead, but “The Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer showed muscle early on, keeping pace with Madsen. It didn’t last though.
By lap 10, Pittman slid his way underneath Shaffer for second and began to hunt Madsen. Pittman, coming off a heartbreaking runner-up finish in Las Vegas, looked to be the only driver all night who could contend with Madsen. While Madsen battled lap traffic, Pittman closed the gap between them to about a couple of car lengths.
And that was as close as he was going to get to the #18’s bumper. Madsen found his rhythm in lap traffic, pulling away to about a four second lead over Pittman, whose #83 Roth Motorsports car was able to close on Madsen again, but only to a second-and-a-half gap.
“Ian was good. We just got beat,” said Pittman, of Owasso, Okla. “I liked the track conditions before it rained, but it is what it is.”
Like Madsen, Pittman was unsure how he would perform at the Tulare short track, coming off strong performances at half-mile speedways.
“We were kind of curious how our car was going to shake out at a smaller place,” he said. “We kind of got both spectrums there of super dry early in the night and pretty wet after the rain and the car was really good.”
Both Madsen and Pittman drive a KPC Chassis, which is located nearby in Fresno, Calif.
Aside from leading every lap, Madsen’s dominance was showcased by him lapping the field up to 11th-place and catching 10th-place Donny Schatz toward the end of the race.
“It was just unreal,” Madsen said in almost disbelief, standing on the front stretch podium. “To get the clean sweep tonight is pretty awesome.”
Madsen’s best finish at Thunderbowl Raceway had been 12th. Of his previous three wins, the smallest track he had won at is the 3/8th-mile Deer Creek Speedway in Minnesota.
“I feel like we’ve been working hard toward this for the last two years,” Madsen said. “It’s really good to see some good results pay off.”
While Pittman finished second, he said he won’t hang his head on the finish. He continues to lead the Series’ championship standings over second-place Donny Schatz — adding 16 points to his cushion between the 10-time Series champion. This is the first time in the storied history of the California-based Roth Motorsports team it continues to lead the points through the Series month-long California swing.
The Series continues its trek through California next weekend on Friday, March 15, at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., and March 16 at the Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif.
Even though Madsen began the California tour dominating Thunderbowl Raceway, to him there is still a question on how he’ll perform at the upcoming races.
“We ran good at Stockton last year and Chico we’ve been hit or miss, so we’ll see what happens,” Madsen said. “Hopefully we can keep it (momentum) going through the Cali-swing.”

McINTOSH MASTERS MINI MAGIC MILE FOR FIRST USAC WIN

Du Quoin, Illinois (March 9, 2019).........Cannon McIntosh's grace under fire was demonstrated literally and figuratively in a multitude of manners Saturday night in the fourth annual "Shamrock Classic" at the Southern Illinois Center.
A fuel leak during hot laps ignited the Bixby, Oklahoma driver's ride, giving the 16-year-old driver a scare he won't soon forget and forcing him to borrow crew member Grady Chandler's firesuit for the remainder of the night as a replacement.
"I got blisters on my ankle right now," McIntosh pointed out. "That was definitely the scariest moment of my life. I had flames up to my eyes and couldn't grab my belt. I was starting to freak out a little bit. There's a great crew around here to put the fire out. God was on my side there."
In turn, the flames lit a fuse under the young driver, and after relinquishing the lead to the defending series champ and reigning race winner, he refused to cave-in to the pressure, snookering Logan Seavey on a lap 30 restart and completed the remaining 21 laps at the point to win his first career USAC feature in just his second series' start.
By accumulating the most passing points throughout the evening, McIntosh earned the pole for the 50-lap feature. However, an opportunity arose that, for some, may have seemed too enticing to turn a blind eye to with a $50,000 bonus awaiting him if he could start from the tail and win the feature.
Yet, McIntosh turned down the opportunity, basically intimating that while the money is nice, he came here to win.
"Fifty-grand would be awesome," McIntosh admitted. "It would've been great to win all that money, but to me, winning that race was the money."
Instead, McIntosh took the pole and, from lap one, showed he wasn't gun shy next to outside front row starter Seavey, instantly rocketing out to a half-straightaway advantage in the opening laps as he quickly closed in on the tail end of the field.
With the bottom occupied, McIntosh had to figure whether to stay in line and try to sneak by on the bottom or snake around the outside to build his lead as Seavey made his blitzkrieg to the front, first around Andrew Layser on the 14th lap before clamping down on McIntosh.
On lap 20, Seavey was right on the cusp, delivering what seemed to be the knockout blow, as he drove around the outside of McIntosh in turn two and beat McIntosh to the position on the back straight before securing the lead exiting the fourth turn.
A turn four tangle on lap 29 sent Matt Veatch on his lid. He would restart. But this set up a lap 30 restart with Seavey and McIntosh running one-two. McIntosh wasn't exactly sure what he had left in the tank, but there was a lot on his mind.
"When (Seavey) got around me, he got me pretty good," McIntosh recalled. "I didn't know if we'd have anything left for him. I didn't know if the car was going away or what was going on. But the caution came out and just going through my mind was all kinds of things. My crew guy on the fence didn't know whether to tell me top or bottom. He's saying top and bottom. We went green and I went to the bottom and it worked. Once we took the lead and it was all good from there."
After multiple cautions with less than 20 laps remaining, the question remained whether Seavey would have something up his sleeve on the restarts in the same manner McIntosh did just moments before. McIntosh wasn't fazed in any aspect, motoring away to solidify his position at the top of the leaderboard.
Zeb Wise made a late-race run, sliding Seavey for second on the 36th lap, then began to make his run at McIntosh, reeling him in in a hurry. But the savvy McIntosh altered his path, moving to the high line in turns one and two while remaining on the inside berm in three and four.
"The bottom was pretty good most of the race," McIntosh explained. "Toward the end, especially one and two, it felt real sandy. I'm like 'it's going away.' Then one corner, going into one and two, I heard somebody on my outside and I knew I had to jump up. We were pretty good in three and four on the bottom, so I stayed on the bottom down there, but went to the top in one and two. We were pretty steady, so I figured we were good from there."
And that he definitely was, mastering one more restart with nine laps remaining to pull away for a 1.645-second victory over Chad Boat, Wise, Zach Daum and Justin Grant. In doing so, McIntosh became the fourth driver in the four-year history of the "Shamrock Classic" to win his first career USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship feature in the event following Shane Golobic (2016), Justin Grant (2017) and Logan Seavey (2018).
