CALI CRUISING: David Gravel dominates at Calistoga Speedway
Gravel, Jason Johnson Racing earn eighth win of the season at West Coast swing finale
CALISTOGA, CA – Sept. 14, 2019 – David Gravel wants his win total with Jason Johnson Racing to be in the double digits by the end of the season.
He came one step closer to achieving his objective Saturday night at Calistoga Speedway by winning the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown – his eighth World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series victory of the season.
“Feels good to get another win,” Gravel said. “I feel like we could have won last night (at Stockton Dirt Track). To let that slip away, it feels good to get a win.”
Gravel dominated the night, but Californian Brad Sweet, looking to close the points gap between he and points leader Donny Schatz, almost crushed the Watertown, Conn.-native’s dreams.
The two drivers started the night in polar opposite scenarios. Sweet qualified 17th out of 22 cars. Gravel set Quick Time for the 15th time this season and set a new track for Calistoga Speedway with a time of 15.672 sec.
Both drivers went on to finished second in their Drydene Heat race. However, Gravel fell from first to second and Sweet charged from sixth to second. Their performance put them both in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash, which Gravel drew the pole for and then went on to win.
At the start of the 25-lap Feature, Gravel launched to the lead and Sweet – who started third – took second from Logan Schuchart. Riding the high line of the half-mile track, Gravel gapped Sweet by close to half a track.
On Lap five that changed. Gravel had to wait on the throttle for the slower car of Stephan Ingraham blocking his line, killing his momentum. That allowed Sweet to cut Gravel’s lead in half. After they crossed the line for Lap seven, Sweet threw a slide job at Gravel going into turn one. He rocketed underneath the Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 41 car and put his NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 car in the lead by turn two.
“I got to the 93 car (of Ingraham) at a bad spot and tried to slid him, it was a dumb mistake on my part,” Gravel said. “I deserved to lose the lead there. Racing all of these races, you should know better than that.”
Gravel was able to still exit the corner better than Sweet, though. He hammered the throttle off the turn with the confidence his rear tires would hold on to every inch of the clay surface. They did and he powered back by Sweet going into turn three.
However, Gravel got out of shape on corner entrance, slowing his pace. Sweet was directly behind him and also had to slow to avoid running into Gravel. Before Sweet could attempt a run underneath him on the exit of turn four, a caution came out for Shane Stewart slowing on track.
The next segment of the race after the restart was déjà vu of the first. Gravel launched back to the lead with Sweet behind him, unable to close in. Less than 10 laps later Gravel found himself back on Ingraham’s bumper. Back to having to slow his momentum. And back to having to worry about Sweet breathing down his neck.
Before Sweet could strike again, another caution came out. This time for Chase Johnson having motor issues that resulted in a burst of flames underneath his car, which extinguished by the time he stopped the car.
“It’s one of those things, man, it’s part of dirt track racing, you’ve got to be good in lap traffic and luckily we were,” Gravel said.
Lined up single file for the restart with eight laps to go, Gravel bested Sweet and third-place Schuchart on the start pulling away by several car lengths before the flag stand. With clean air in front of him and no lap traffic to deal with, Gravel put the cap on his dominating night by leading all 25 laps and winning his first career race at Calistoga Speedway.
Sweet had to settle for second but accepted the finish as it allowed him to gain points on Schatz – who finished fourth, after a charge from seventh. Sweet is now 10 points behind Schatz.
“The cautions just kind of came at the wrong time for us,” Sweet said. “He would get out front with clean air and we could stay a half straightaway behind. You needed lap traffic to break his pace… We’ll take it after our qualifying effort. It’s a good rebound for our NAPA Auto Parts car. We’ve got a big picture going on here.”
While Gravel sits third in points, more than 100 points behind Schatz, the big picture for he and his Jason Johnson Racing team is to keep winning. Their eighth win – tying Schatz for the second most wins this season – at Calistoga Speedway was a confidence booster to make that happen.
“It means a lot,” said Philip Dietz, Gravel’s crew chief. “Lately I feel like we’ve been struggling a bit on these tracks out here in California. I feel like they’re a little bit different than a lot of places we go. Calistoga, I feel is more comparative to places we’ve had success at this year, like the Grove and Knoxville. We were kind of able to keep our car pretty similar to what we’ve done there and had success with. Just made for a much easier night.”
With the West Coast swing finished and the World of Outlaws tour heading to the Midwest and East Coast, Gravel and his team have their eye on more dominating performances.
“It’s been an awesome year,” Gravel said. “Hopefully we can keep this thing going. I really want to get to double digit wins. Hopefully we get there and keep this thing going.”

IMMACULATE CUMMINS TAKES HAUBSTADT HUSTLER

Haubstadt, Indiana (September 14, 2019).........In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and Kyle Cummins winning at Tri-State Speedway in 2019.
Cummins, of Princeton, Ind., continued his immaculate season at the quarter-mile dirt oval in Haubstadt, Ind., winning his seventh race in seven tries this year at Tri-State, and picking up his second career Haubstadt Hustler victory after collecting Saturday night's $10,000-to-win 40-lap feature co-sanctioned by the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship and the Brandeis Midwest Sprint Car Series.
Despite the blistering run of success, which now includes three USAC victories in 2019, Cummins was cautious to call his shot ala Babe Ruth entering the night.
"I felt like after winning this many in a row here, I was bound to lose because everything's been going right and we really haven't had a real bad night," Cummins admitted. "Throughout a whole season, the more good nights you have, the bad ones are right around the corner."
That was certainly not the case in the final results, though the beginning of the main event saw him jump quickly to the lead on the second lap past USAC Sprint Rookie of the Year point leader Dustin Christie, then fall back to second as USAC Sprint point leader C.J. Leary bolted to the front around the outside of Cummins between turns one and two on the third circuit, where he'd hold down the fort for the remainder of the first quarter the feature.
Traffic was thick entering the 10th lap for Leary as he swung high and dove low to split his way to the nearest escape route away from Cummins, but to no avail, as his lead diminished and Cummins was prime to strike on the 12th lap when Leary got himself sideways in the middle of turns three and four. Cummins slipped by underneath off turn four to assume control up front.
The evening's lone red flag arrived on the 16th lap when previous night's Terre Haute winner, Saturday's Fatheadz Eyewear fast qualifier and fourth-running Justin Grant, ramped over the infield tire off turn four and spiraled through the air before landing upside down along the main straightaway where he'd climb from the wreckage unharmed.
The lapped car of three-time Haubstadt Hustler winner Kevin Thomas, Jr. separated Cummins and Leary on the lap 17 restart. Leary ably disposed of Thomas quickly around the top in turn one, but Cummins had scooted away to a one second advantage by that point, forcing Leary into catchup mode right off the bat.
Just after halfway, Cummins was rapidly approaching the throes of lapped traffic, allowing Courtney to rip by Leary for second, then carve deeply into Cummins' advantage, whittling the interval down to a quarter of a second. On the 27th lap, Cummins met the side-by-side duo of Christie and Brian Karraker, both on the cusp of being put a lap down while battling for position. Cummins was briefly stifled behind the pair before opting for the top at the entry of turn three with Courtney now less than a car length off Cummins' rear bumper.
Traffic will certainly be a part of the equation with 25 cars going 40 laps on a quarter-mile bullring. Although Cummins has attained more success and completed more laps at Tri-State than anybody on track this night, there's nothing that can completely prepare an individual for the decisiveness it takes to maneuver through it without a hindrance. But that's just the type of challenge Cummins was ready to embrace.
"One time I thought (a car in front of me) had spun out," Cummins remembered. "I'm not sure who it was, but I was crossed up as much as I could be, and I thought they had spun out. I really had to backpedal, and when I came off the corner there, I thought, 'man, I'm really scrubbing off some speed.' I didn't know where they were running, so I decided to get away from the bottom and run a couple laps around the top. Then, we got to the next group and they were running the top. It seemed like if you pressured them a little bit, they would slide up. I didn't feel like (Courtney) was going to pass around the top if they were there too."
Courtney tried with all his might, riding high into turn one and diamonding off two to get a run on Cummins. Yet, Cummins wasn't about to give Courtney an open door to the front as the defending USAC Sprint champ harassed Cummins, doing everything but passing the new all-time winningest MSCS driver with the laps dwindling.
With three laps to go, heartbreak befell fourth-running Jason McDougal who slowed to a stop in turn two after charging from his 21st starting position. For Cummins, though, it was a godsend to get to step out of the line of traffic for good for the final dash to the finish.
Cummins and the crew on his Rock Steady Racing/Debra Corn Foster Care - Lucas Oil Center Oil-Lube-Wash/Mach 1/Foxco Chevy went with a slightly different plan of attack. With track conditions changing, it threw the team for a bit of a loop.

"We kind of did a couple things differently from what we normally do," Cummins explained. "Once I moved up there (to the top), I didn't know I was as good as I was. Once I got up there on the restart again, it felt good. I couldn't pass the lapped cars for a while. They were running two-by-two and I was just trying to pick my way through and get in the right spot. Thankfully, we got that last caution to get them out of the way, and we were able to run my own line those last couple of laps."
For the sprint to the checkered, Cummins' plan was to throw it into the corners knowing his competition was going to have to pull off something special to get by.
"When I went through (turns) one and two, I couldn't believe how good it stuck," Cummins exclaimed. "I'm like, 'this is where I'm going to be,' and if they're going to pass me, they're going to have to slide me or something. I was a little nervous. I got a little loose coming out of turn two on the last lap, and it's happened multiple times where a guy throws a big haymaker slider. I got into three and actually got a little tight. I'm just glad they weren't right on me. It felt good to make some money tonight."
From there, Cummins buttoned up his sixth career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature victory, four of which have come at Tri-State Speedway, by a margin of 0.879 sec. over Tyler Courtney, C.J. Leary, Kendall Ruble and Chris Windom.

Howard and Brightbill Crowned 2019 Grandview Speedway Point Champions
KRESSLEY AND BELTZ SCORE NASCAR FEATURE VICTORIES IN FINAL POINT RACES OF SEASON
BECHTELSVILLE, PA SEPTEMBER 15, 2019 . . . Brett “The Threat” Kressley avoided being involved in two red flagged incidents that blocked the track during the running of the T.P. Trailers NASCAR 358 Modified 30-lap feature on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway in the action sponsored by WNPV 1440 AM Radio, Lansdale. The Orefield leadfoot went on to chalk up his third win of the season.
Ryan Beltz overtook Tom Miller to become the new leader on the sixth lap of the TP Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman 25-lap feature to claim his first win of the season and become the 15th different winner in the series. The last time Beltz stood in victory lane was June 30, 2018.
Providing the feature winners met the necessary requirements, they received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Jesse Leiby and Beltz. Wyatt Harrar, who finished 10th in the Sportsman feature received an extra $100 for being the highest finishing crate engine driver.
Kressley and Beltz may have won the battle by winning their respective features, but it was Duane Howard and Brad Brightbill that won the war claiming the 2019 point championship title in their divisions.
Howard, involved in some early mishaps finished seventh, but had enough points to actually clinch the crown last week; earned his sixth Modified point title at the 1/3-mile oval behind the wheel of the Norm’s Save Station/Norm Hansell-owned No. 357. Howard, who praised Norm and the crew for providing him with a great car powered by a Carroll Hine engine every week, said it takes a team effort to win a championship.
Sportsman point champion Brightbill, who missed a feature earlier in the year on the night they ran a make-up feature in which he had engine problems and didn’t participate in the regular show feature, still had enough points to earn his first title ever in his self-owned No. 19. He became the fifth different driver to earn the title since 2015.
The big one, the 49th annual Freedom 76, is set for Saturday, September 21 at 7 p.m. The winner walks off with at least $25,000.
Kicking off the weekend will be the Freedom 38 Sportsman action on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The event pays $2,000 to win and is sure to attract a stellar field of Sportsman racing talent.
The Delaware Auto Exchange Mid-Atlantic Sprints will also be part of the doubleheader show. Featured with the Sprints will be standout racers such as Eddie Wagner, Tom Carberry, Tim Tanner, Jr., and others.
Jesse Leiby, a rookie that started competing midway through the season, took the early lead in the Modified feature trailed by the son and father duo of Steve and Ray Swinehart; Brett Gilmore and Craig Whitmoyer.
With five laps completed, Ray Swinehart took over second and set his sights on Leiby.
The first yellow was thrown on the 17th lap when Louden Reimert slowed between the third and fourth turn, but then pulled away. R. Swinehart, winless since the Forrest Rogers Memorial on September 1, 2018, became the new leader when action resumed.
The red had to be thrown on the 19th lap for a multi-car accident that blocked the track that eliminated defending point champion Mike Gular and Frank Cozze. Eight cars were out of contention on the restart red in turn one. It was Swinehart in front when racing went green again followed by Doug Manmiller, Leiby, Kressley and Whitmoyer.
Kressley was slicing through the pack advancing a position almost every lap and by the 22nd lap he was challenging Swinehart for the lead.
A new leader emerged on the 24th lap when Kressley stormed past Swinehart for the number one position to become the third different front runner.
Once Kressley took command he never looked back and pulled the family-owned No. 19K into the winner’s circle to post his 12th career Modified feature victory. Claiming his season best finish in second was Swinehart followed by Manmiller, who despite a damaged race car in third; early leader Leiby in fourth and Whitmoyer fifth who had his best run since May 4, 2019.
The four qualifying heats were won by Danny Erb, Brett Gilmore, Whitmoyer and R. Swinehart. Rick Laubach and Gular won the consies.
Sportsman action saw Tom Miller take the early lead to set the pace for three laps before the red was thrown when one of the back runners was pinched into the third turn guard rail which triggered a chain reaction that eliminated ten cars. Jack Butler, who was also involved, was shaken up a bit. Miller resumed the lead on the restart with Scott Kohler, Beltz, Dean Bachman and Wyatt Harrar in pursuit.
Beltz moved into second on the fifth lap and one lap later he put the Just Cruisin’ No. 221 at the head of the pack.
Within no time Beltz had a straightaway lead built up leaving Kohler, Bachman, Brandon Edgar, a feature winner earlier in the year and Brian Hirthler dicing for the remaining positions.
Positions behind Beltz were constantly changing, but he never faltered and went on to garner his third career win. Having his best finish of the year was runner-up Bachman, followed by Hirthler, newly crowned point champion Brightbill, who managed to come home in fourth after being involved in the third lap incident and having to go pit side before rejoining the race in time and Brad Arnold, who was also a feature winner this year.

Fans attending Friday’s doubleheader featuring the Freedom 38 for Sportsman and Mid-Atlantic Sprints will also have this as the final opportunity to purchase their Freedom 76 tickets for just $35 rather than the race day price of $40.
Admission for the Friday night show is $12 for adults, $5 for youngsters 6 through 11 and admission is free for kids under 6. Starting time is 7:30 p.m. There is no rain date for this event.
Then on Saturday the $25,000 to win dirt track racing classic, the 49th Annual Freedom 76, is expected to attract many of the top names. Gates for advance ticket holders open at 3 p.m. while admission gates will open at 3:30 p.m.
The first qualifying event will get the green at 7 p.m.
Adult tickets are priced at $40, youngsters 6 through 11 pay 10 and kids under 6 are admitted free.

EMOTIONAL STEVEN REED TOPS WALL MODIFIEDS SATURDAY
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Two-time All American Auto Group Modified stock car champion Steven Reed raced to his fourth main event win of the season Saturday night at Wall Stadium Speedway. The Jackson resident and current point leader was emotional in the winner's circle after the event.
A pair of drivers, Joey Merlino of Pine Hill and Kevin Davison of Howell, fought for their first main event wins in the test as Reed worked his way to the front of the pack. A lap 18 restart saw Davison power to the front past Merlino in the outside lane before another caution slowed the action. Davison again worked the outside lane on the ensuing restart before both Merlino and Davison tangled in turn two. Reed then raced into the lead after his climb to the head of the field.
Reed then survived a few more cautions before stretching his advantage to the checker flag. Andrew Krause of Holmdel and Eddie McCarthy of Pt. Pleasant were second and third while Brick's Eric Mauriello and Neptune's Chris Andretta wrapped up the top five.
“This win is for the fans,” an emotional Reed said after the win. “Every week a lot of people come up to me in the stands and that really means a lot. Some come up and wish me luck like I'm a man going off to war. Their encouragement helps. Even the haters help us by encouraging us to go faster!
“I also have to thank my family and backers for all they do to make this car fast. It is so much fun to drive because it is so good. My spotter kept telling to to take it easy and save the tires in case there was another restart. It is hard to slow down when the car is so good!”
Point leader Elliot Wohl of Beachwood took a step toward his first O'Shea's Auto Repair Factory Stock title by wining his fifth 25-lap main event of the year. Former champ Scott Riggleman of Manchester led much of the first half of the race before settling for second, while Tom Rajkowski of Fords, Wall's Bryan O'Shea and Joey Helberg of Union wrapped up the top five.
Former champion Brian Osborn of Howell raced into the lead on lap five and drove on to his second victory of the year in the 25-lapper for the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks. Alonzo Morales of Mt. Ephraim and point leader Neil Rutt III of Edison were second and third while Sal Liguori of Hazlet and Jeffrey Loesch of Neptune City were fourth and fifth.
Eric Mauriello jumped into the Alan Camp No. x3 for the Center State Engineering Sportsman 25-lapper and crossed the finish line first, but when that team suffered a tire bank infraction Jonathan Laureigh of Lanoka Harbor was awarded the feature race win. Farmingdale's Tommy Martino, point leader Carsten DiGiantomasso, Jake Nelke of Manahawkin and Roland DeMartino of Beachwood were second through fifth.
Auto racing continues at Wall Stadium Speedway this Saturday (Sept. 21) night with the Factory Stocks battling in two 25-lappers and the Sportsman cars and Mike's Performance Center Limited Late Models each racing in a 25-lapper. The visiting Three Quarter Midgets will race in a 25-lap event on the inner oval and Demolition Derby action will also be presented. Grandstand gates open at 5:00 p.m., qualifying begins at 5:45 p.m. and features start at 7:00 p.m. This “Pack the Track” night event offers a discounted admission of just $10 for adults and $5 of children aged 6 to 16. Kids five and under and parking is always free.

Sammons Scores Third While Pauch Jr. Wraps Up 2019 Title At New Egypt
New Egypt, NJ – Davey Sammons and Dakota Kessler led the 30-Lap Vahlco Wheels Modified feature to the green. Sammons would jump out the early lead and led the first six laps when Johnny Guarino, Cale Ross and Wade Hendrickson tangled in turn three. Sammons would jump back out to the lead on the ensuing restart with Kessler in tow. The second caution of the event would fly on lap ten when Kevin Vaclavicek, Dominick Buffalino and Blaine Bracelin got together in turn four. Sammons would again take command of the field on the restart. Brandon Grosso would take over the runner-up spot from Kessler after starting 10th on lap 13. The only slight hiccup that Sammons would have would be on lap 15 when his right side sail panel came loose and folded over which would not phase him one bit as he continued to set a torrid pace. Billy Pauch Jr. who started 12th would now be in the third position as him and Grosso battled for second while they chased after Sammons. 2018 track champion David VanHorn had now raced up from his 13th starting spot while him and Mike Butler put on a crowd-pleasing duel running side by side for the fourth position lap after lap toward the end of the event. They would all be no match for Sammons and he would lead wire-to-wire scoring his third Vahlco Wheels Modified main event of 2019 at New Egypt Speedway. Brandon Grosso would come home second with Billy Pauch Jr. third, David VanHorn fourth, and Mike Butler completing the top five.
“Two weeks ago we changed something on the car and had a motor issue, we got everything back in time for last week and found out we had a bent valve. So, we found something and it took us two weeks to run it. I drove as hard as I could. The track was really fun, I’ve won races where I had to run the bottom and it’s nice to win one where you have to get up on the wheel. We fought for this and we’re just happy to be here”, said Sammons post race.
After clinching the 2019 Vahlco Wheels Modified title the week prior, Billy Pauch Jr. was officially crowned champion this week, for Pauch Jr. it is his second championship in three years and four straight seasons where he hasn’t finished worse than second in points.
“It was a tough and challenging year, we really got going there. We really wanted to win tonight but hats off to Davey (Sammons), Our guys are awesome, this means a lot, I grew up here as a kid, we’ve had a good couple of years here and we have a lot of fun”, Pauch Jr. said following the race.
Brian Spencer picked up his second straight Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Car feature over Rich Mellor, Larry Drake, Duane Nixon and Heidi Hedin. With his second place finish Rich Mellor has clinched the 2019 Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Car championship.
Robbie Holzwarth scored his second Crate Modified win of 2019 and the second of his career over Ryan Heim, Sammy Martz Jr., Matt Miller and Johnny Bangs. The point battle is closer than ever with Joe Toth leading Johnny Bangs by just two points and Ryan Simmons 10 out of the lead in third heading into next week's final points race. The Crate Modified results are currently unofficial.
Rob Longo won the 15-lap feature for the Mike’s Performance Center 4-Cylinders over point leader Mike Fox, Joe Garey Sr., Dom Antonelli and Scott Dunn.
New Egypt Speedway is back in action next Saturday night when Hammer Electric presents Championship Night along with ¼ Midget Night. Track champions in the Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars, Hammer Sportsman, Crate Modifieds, Street Stocks and the Mike’s Performance Center 4-Cylinders will all be crowned. Also all area ¼ Midget Racers are invited to put their cars on display and take part in our ¼ Midget parade during intermission.
Adult Admission (16+) is $20, Seniors (65+) are $18, Teens (12-15) & Military w/ID are $10 while Kids 11 & Under are FREE. Pit gates will open at 4PM with the grandstands opening at 5PM. Hot Laps are scheduled for 6PM with racing scheduled to begin at 7PM next Saturday.

FORTUNE FAVORED: Logan Schuchart wins NOS Energy Drink Showdown at Stockton
Schuchart benefits from teammate Jacob Allen’s bad luck to win race and $20,000 prize
STOCKTON, CA – Sept. 13, 2019 – Logan Schuchart could see victory at the Stockton Dirt Track with three laps to go. He could see his opportunity to sweep the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series races at the track. And he could see collecting the $20,000 award for winning the NOS Energy Drink Showdown.
However, he could also see his Shark Racing teammate Jacob Allen leading, searching for his first World of Outlaws win. He couldn’t catch him. A runner-up finish looked like his calling, and he was OK with that.
Cruising down the backstretch, he saw Allen’s Drydene No. 1a car power into turn three, heading for two laps to go. When Schuchart exited turn four, he no longer saw Allen in front of him. The white and blue No. 1a slowed and pulled into the infield.
The lead was Schuchart’s. And after two clean laps, so was the win.
“It’s a tough deal,” Schuchart said of Allen’s affliction. “I’m happy to get the win. It’s awesome to have these cars up front. Whatever happened, this team works really hard to keep these cars on the racetrack.”
The victory was Schuchart’s seventh of the year – further breaking his record of winning at most four wins in a season – and 15th career World of Outlaws win overall.
While he celebrated in Victory Lane with his Drydene cladded Shark Racing team, Allen was back at the trailer diagnosing an engine failure with his crew under a full moon Friday the 13th night.
“Pretty much a heart break,” said a deflated Allen, trying to find the words to describe the loss. “It’s kind of tough.”
The Shark Racing duo were fast all night. Schuchart qualified third and Allen fourth – both setting times that broke the previous track record. Ten-time Series champion Donny Schatz set Quick Time and the new track record with a time of 12.543 sec.
Schuchart and Allen went on to both finished second in their Drydene Heat races. Then finish third and second, respectively, in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – won by Austen Wheatley.
Wheatley and Allen made up the front row of the 30-lap Feature – both attempting to win their first World of Outlaws race. On the initial start, Wheatley hit the throttle and wheeled onto the front stretch, allowing Allen to get the jump on him and pull away with the lead into the first turn.
His comfortable lead was eliminated in two laps when the first caution came out for Shane Stewart going off track in turn two. On the restart Allen launched back to the lead, but Wheatley stayed close and got side by side with Allen through the first corner. Allen had the better grip on the high groove and drove away from Wheatley down the backstretch.
While Allen ran away with the lead, David Gravel worked his way around Schuchart for third and after dueling with Wheatley for eight laps moved into second. By that time, Allen had found himself in heavy lap traffic. Gravel was able to gain yards on him every lap.
However, once Allen found clean air again, he left Gravel searching for speed by pulling away to about a straightaway lead.
With nine laps to go Allen caught more traffic, including Brad Sweet, and got loose exiting turn two. He lost traction exiting turn four, too, unable to hold his line. That allowed Gravel to go from being a straightaway back to being at Allen’s tail tank.
Allen continued to run the low line into turn one and Gravel darted high to try and get a run around him. However, the move cost Gravel a chance at a win. Going high opened the door for Schuchart to dive underneath. The two almost made contact at the apex of the corner, hurting Gravel most. Schuchart accelerated away from the Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 41 car down the backstretch.
“I kind of punched myself in the head there after that,” Gravel said. “I tried to pass Jacob on the top going into one and two, ended up giving the spot to Logan.”
Now, the only car Schuchart saw in front of him was his teammate. With seven laps to go inches separated the Shark Racing drivers due to a caution for Tim Kaeding going off track in turn two.
On the final restart of the night Allen rocketed ahead of Schuchart. He made it look like a race between a great white shark and a carp. Schuchart couldn’t keep pace with his teammate and in the closing laps found himself having to hold off a hard charging Schatz, who got around Gravel for third.
With three laps to go Allen wore the appearance of a first-time winner. Clean laps. No mistakes. And fields of clean air between the cars behind him and in front of him. Appearances meant nothing, though. While driving through turns three and four his fairy tale turned into a horror movie. His engine let go. Speed lost. Win lost.
“After that last restart it felt like it was kind of starting to lose power a pinch,” Allen said. “But it’s hard to say. You know, you’ve got a lot on your mind. There’re only a few laps left. You’re just trying to finish it and win the race. It’s a pretty shitty deal really. I don’t know. It sucks. I guess it’s just part of it.”
Allen’s misfortune became Schuchart’s gain as he inherited the lead and drove to his second straight win at the Stockton Dirt Track.
“He was way faster than I was,” Schuchart said about Allen. “It showed after the restart. It’s tough. Once Jacob got to the lead, he was gone. I couldn’t really hit my marks there for a few laps. I was just trying to make myself wide. I was happy to run second in this race. But I’m a competitor at the same time. I was going to try and pass him if I got the spot.
“Jacob, he’s been working really hard at this deal. It’s tough. It takes a lot out of you. Especially when you get beat all of the time. But he’s right there. We’ve seen it in the past. I hope he can get his spirit up and win one of these things. I’ve never been so big as a fan as I was running second tonight.”
While Allen’s slumped body posture and hanging head expressed his disappointment in his 17th place finish, he was still able to find the light in a gloomy situation.
“It gives you confidence for sure, just being that close and just leading laps,” Allen said. “Definitely a confidence booster. Probably the biggest thing, besides me getting my first win, is just knowing Logan was running second and we had a shot at getting our first one-two finish. Schatz finished second and Gravel had to settle for third. With Schatz’s runner-up finish he was able to retake the points lead over Grass Valley, Calif.-native Brad Sweet – who finished 10th – one race after Sweet took it from him. The reigning champion is now 14 points ahead of Sweet heading into the final California race of the year.
Schuchart is in a close points battle of his own. Sitting fifth in points, he is 38 points behind fourth-place Daryn Pittman after winning the NOS Energy Drink Showdown.
The Pennsylvania-native now has his sights set on a win at Calistoga Speedway.
