LARSON THE LAST ONE STANDING IN BC39 STOOPS PURSUIT

Speedway, Indiana (September 4, 2019).........Kyle Larson literally became the last man standing on the final lap of the Stoops Pursuit during Wednesday's opening night of the Driven2SaveLives BC39 powered by NOS Energy Drink at The Dirt Track at IMS.
On the last lap of the fifth and final segment of the 25-lap event, three drivers remained on track and were in contention for the victory after 22 of the 25 starters had been eliminated from competition in the unique format that sent drivers to the infield if they were passed or were involved in an accident.
Michael Pickens (Auckland, N.Z.), Kyle Larson (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) entered the back straightaway off turn two under a proverbial blanket on the last lap. Pickens dove underneath Larson entering turn three on the final lap. As both went for the same piece of real estate at the entrance of turn three, Pickens' right rear tire climbed Larson's left front, sending Pickens flipping wildly and Larson into a 360 spin at the edge of the infield.
Moments later, Grant seemed to have a clear path to victory on the top side, but instead, banged his right rear tire off the turn three wall, sending himself into a series of barrel rolls against the concrete.
Remember Larson? With a cloud of dust kicked up from the infield and his camber askew, he pointed his Keith Kunz-Curb-Agajanian/Curb Records/Bullet by Spike/Speedway Toyota in the right direction, tip-toed around the bottom of the fourth turn and gassed his way back to the finish line as the winner.
The unpredictable turn of events was reminiscent of a combination of both the 1976 Daytona 500 finish between Richard Petty/David Pearson as well as Danny Sullivan's spin-and-win on the same property at IMS back in 1985, earning Larson $2,100 for his efforts and being a part of one of the wildest moments in the century-plus history of racing on the IMS grounds.
"That was wild," Larson exclaimed. "I didn't know it was going to be that crazy of a race. On the second to last stage, Justin (Grant) got by and then (Jason) McDougal got by, and I knew I needed to get back to second to be able to run that last round."
"I was really good up top," Larson continued. "I knew if I got a good restart, I could get by Pickens. But this track was so racy that sliders were easy to throw. Michael (Pickens) was throwing everything he had at me. We made contact there on the back stretch. He was trying to park it on the bottom, and I was trying to do what I did the lap before, two laps before."
Wednesday marked the first night Larson had been on track in competition at The Dirt Track at IMS after not competing in last year's inaugural BC39 event.
"I was bummed I couldn't make it last year," Larson admitted. "I saw how exciting it was and said, 'screw it, I'm going to try to make it.' I made it to the Indy airport at 4:45 just in time for hot laps. It was worth it, though. I hope we can be up here again tomorrow."
The BC39 continues Thursday, Sept. 5, with the finale. The event will have the public gates opening at 3pm and cars on track for practice at 4:30pm, with qualifying races to follow at 5:30pm. Opening ceremonies are slated for 7pm and immediately followed by the main feature events, starting with multiple D-Mains, C-Main, the semi-feature and the 39-lap main event.

Sweets gets first Willamette Speedway win with late race slider on David Gravel
LEBANON, OR – Sept. 4, 2019 – Brad Sweet saw the collapse of a fruitful performance in less than a second during Wednesday night’s World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Feature at Willamette Speedway.
With lap cars slowing the Grass Valley, Calif.-native’s progress, David Gravel threw a slide job underneath them all into turn one and exited the corner with the lead. After leading 25 of the 30 laps, Sweet was forced to watch defeat drive away from him.
He wasn't willing to settle for second, though. Not now. Not this late in the season.
The next time into turn one Sweet wasn’t forgiving with the throttle. Or his car. He dove to the bottom of the corner and slid the NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 car up across the track, directly in front of Gravel, nearly making contact with the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 car.
But it was the winning move. Sweet led to the end, picking up his first Willamette Speedway victory and 13th World of Outlaws win of the year – 47th career victory overall.
“I’m just glad I led the last one,” Sweet said. “I about gave it away in lap traffic. It’s nice to get this NAPA Auto Parts car back in Victory Lane. We’ve had a great season. When you have a great season and you go on a little winless streak it kind of feels like the world is ending.”
The winless streak was eight races – about a month’s time. Many drivers are on longer winless droughts, but in those eight races Sweet lost the points lead to 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz and struggled to find the podium at times – an uncommon characteristic for he and his Kasey Kahne Racing team.
The pairing looked back in traditional form at the Oregon track. Sweet started the night by setting Quick Time – five hundredths of a second off the track record he set in 2016. He then finished second in his Drydene Heat race and won the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash.
Sweet jolted to the lead at the start of the 30-lap Feature, but Gravel never let the “Big Cat” out of his sight. The Watertown, Conn.-native stayed within a second to half of a second gap behind Sweet throughout the race.
Lap traffic came into play on Lap seven, but every time a slower car would obstruct Sweet’s run around the high side of the track – allowing Gravel to close on him – Gravel would also face the same issue once having to deal with the lap car himself.
However, with five laps to go, Sweet found himself stuck behind the slower cars of Brent Marks and Jessie Attard going into turn one. The two cars blocked the top lane, forcing Sweet to hammer the brakes and kill his momentum into the turn. That allowed Gravel to dive into the turn and exit off the bottom with the lead.
“I miss judged how slow that fifty-three (car) was going,” Sweet said. “Brent got kind of tangled up with him and I basically had to stop. I was stopped up by the cushion and I knew I was in a bad spot. It wasn’t surprising to see David go by there.”
With the hunger and determination to win again, Sweet said Gravel left the door open the next time around and he threw the power slider at him to take back the lead. Gravel tried to throw another slide job at Sweet with three laps to go but couldn’t slide up in front of the No. 49 car in time. Sweet went on to claim the victory.
Looking back on the race, Gravel has an idea of what he could have done differently.
“Maybe just throw a bomb on him like he gave me back there,” Gravel said. “It’s just one of those things that you’ve got to put moves on guys to win these races. I was just a little nice. He put a big boy move on me and I should’ve done the same back.”
While Gravel and Sweet dueled for the lead, Ian Madsen found his way back to a podium finish – finishing third – and picked up the KSE Hard Charger award by racing from his sixth-place starting position.
“It’s been quite frustrating as of late because we’ve had a lot of car speed, just not luck on our side,” Madsen said. “Just to get on the podium is awesome, especially starting a couple of rows back like we did.”
Schatz finished fourth, allowing Sweet to gain eight points on the reigning champion and continue to keep the battle for the championship tight – now 28 points separating them with 21 races to go this season.
The win couldn’t have come at a better time for Sweet, too, with the Series spending the next five races in his home state of California.
“It’s a good win for us,” Sweet said. “We needed a little confidence booster. These races aren’t easy to win. Even though sometimes they’re easier than others. Tonight was no easy task, even though we started on the pole. The track wasn't super conducive to passing. But it all comes down to lap traffic and I think years of experience has helped me figure out how to finish these things off.”

90 DRIVERS ON FINAL BC39 ENTRY LIST

Speedway, Indiana (September 2, 2019).........Ninety, count 'em, 90 drivers are on the final entry list for the Driven2SaveLives BC39 powered by NOS Energy Drink on September 4-5 at The Dirt Track at IMS in Speedway, Ind.
The 90 entered drivers marks the third largest field for a USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship event in the past three decades, which includes 23 USAC National championships and 208 total USAC National Midget feature wins spread out among the 90 drivers, a stacked field from top-to-bottom who are gunning for the $15,000 prize awarded to the winner of the A-Main on Thursday, Sept. 5.
Among the 90 drivers entered are eight drivers who have extensive experience on the famed 2.5-mile oval surrounding the dirt track located in turn three of the infield.
Conor Daly (Noblesville, Ind.) and J.J. Yeley have each finished in the top-ten at the Indianapolis 500, Daly in this past May's race and Yeley in 1998. Yeley has also made eight Brickyard 400 starts, with fellow Brickyard starters Kyle Larson (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (Olive Branch, Miss.) ready to give the BC39 a go along with NASCAR Xfinity Series race veterans Chase Briscoe (Mitchell, Ind.), Christopher Bell (Norman, Okla.) and Chad Boat (Phoenix, Ariz.), who finished as the runner-up in the inaugural BC39 in 2018. Meanwhile, Chris Windom (Canton, Ill.) made a start in this year's Freedom 100 Indy Lights race on Carb Day at IMS.
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's Brady Bacon is the reigning BC39 race winner from a year ago, leading the final nine laps to score the popular victory. Bacon is a two-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champ in 2014 and 2016 and one of 11 past USAC National champs in the BC39 lineup, in addition to Yeley (2001 & 2003 Silver Crown, 2002-03 Sprint and 2003 Midget), Bell (2013 Midget) and Windom (2016 Silver Crown & 2017 Sprint).
Tyler Courtney (Indianapolis, Ind.) is the defending USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car titlist, while Logan Seavey (Sutter, Calif.) is the reigning USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget champ. Lincoln, Indiana's Dave Darland (1997 Silver Crown, 1999 Sprint, 2001-02 Midget) and Tucson, Arizona's Jerry Coons, Jr. (2008 Silver Crown, 2008 Sprint & 2006-07 Midget) are among the three USAC Triple Crown champs, along with Yeley, to have won all three USAC National championships throughout their career.
Lebanon, Indiana's Spencer Bayston (2017), Minden, Nevada's Tanner Thorson (2016) and Peru, Indiana's Russ Gamester represent three more titles among eight previous USAC National Midget champions represented in the BC39 field.
Nearly one-third of the BC39 field has tallied a USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget feature victory in their career, 28 drivers to be exact, led by Darland (30), Bell (23), Coons (19), Yeley (17), Larson (16), Thorson (13), Gamester (12), Courtney (11), Boat (9), Bacon (7), Seavey (6), Bayston (5), Stenhouse (5), Cullman, Alabama's Kevin Thomas, Jr. (5), Ione, California's Justin Grant (4), Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania's John Heydenreich (4), Auckland, New Zealand's Michael Pickens (4), Pocahontas, Illinois's Zach Daum (3), Noblesville, Indiana's Billy Wease (3), Angola, Indiana's Zeb Wise (3), Pittsboro, Indiana's Critter Malone (2), Windom (2), and single-race winners Steve Buckwalter (Royersford, Pa.), Tanner Carrick (Lincoln, Calif.), Jason McDougal (Broken Arrow, Okla.), Cannon McIntosh (Bixby, Okla.) and Tyler Thomas (Collinsville, Okla.).
Meanwhile, current USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car point leader C.J. Leary and recent Kokomo Speedway Sprint Car Smackdown prelim night winner Thomas Meseraull are seeking their first USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget points-paying victories. Meseraull has won a pair of non-points midget races in USAC competition, in 2004 at California's Irwindale Speedway and again in 2018 at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin.
USAC Regional series champions are well-represented in the BC39 lineup, namely 2018 Eastern Midget titlist Alex Bright (Collegeville, Pa.), 2017 Gulf Coast Speed2 Midget champ Kyle Jones (Kennedale, Texas), 2017-18 Midwest Thunder Speed2 Midget champion Aaron Leffel (Springfield, Ohio) and 2009 Kenyon Midget champion Dillon Welch (Carmel, Ind.).
USAC's Western States Midgets have brought a strong contingent, including current series point leader Robert Dalby (Anaheim, Calif.), a two-time winner with the series this year, along with 2012 overall series champion Shannon McQueen (Bakersfield, Calif.) and July Santa Maria winner Maria Cofer (Macdoel, Calif.), two of the five female drivers in this year's BC39 field. David Prickett was the 2012 Western States Midget Dirt champ while Cody Swanson (Norco, Calif.) is a two-time winner with the series.
Jake Neuman (New Berlin, Ill.) established the 10-lap track record at The Dirt Track at IMS a year ago at 2:06.99. Andrew Layser (Collegeville, Pa.) leads all Rookie drivers in the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget point standings.
Brady Bacon captured the inaugural BC39 victory one year ago after starting 7th. He was followed in the top-ten by Chad Boat, Kevin Thomas, Jr., Tyler Courtney, Christopher Bell, Alex Bright, Justin Grant, Holly Shelton, Jerry Coons, Jr. and Ryan Robinson. Rounding out the balance of the field were Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Chris Windom, Logan Seavey, Zeb Wise, Shane Cottle, Jason McDougal, Maria Cofer, Terry Babb, Brayton Lynch, David Budres, Brian Karraker, Tyler Thomas, Tucker Klaasmeyer, Jake Neuman, Dillon Welch and Dave Darland.
Kevin Thomas, Jr. led the first 30 laps of the event and Bacon the final nine. Zeb Wise captured the 2018 Stoops Pursuit race on the opening night of the BC39.
On track action begins Wednesday, Sept. 4, beginning with the drivers meeting in the IMS Media Room at 2pm. Public gates open at 3pm with cars hitting the track for practice at 5pm, followed by opening ceremonies at 6:30pm. Heat races and the Stoops Pursuit race will conclude the night's racing action.
The finale, on Thursday, Sept. 5, will have the public gates opening at 3pm and cars on track for practice at 4:30pm, with qualifying races to follow at 5:30pm. Opening ceremonies are slated for 7pm and immediately followed by the main feature events, starting with multiple D-Mains, C-Main, the semi-feature and the 39-lap main event.

The BC39 officially gets underway on Tuesday, Sept. 3 with team parking at noon. From 4-6pm, catch five USAC icons at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum's USAC Stars: From the Dirt Track to the Brickyard series. The event will feature legends Don and Mel Kenyon, and current drivers Michael Pickens, Chris Windom and Chad Boat. Pat Sullivan, longtime USAC public address announcer, historian, and author, will emcee this evening of entertaining banter and thrilling stories.
Tickets are available to Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum members for $15 and non-members for $20. Limited seating. Tickets must be purchased in advance. For more information or to buy tickets, contact Kelly Hartman at khartman@brickyard.com.
Following the event, make your way to USAC headquarters, just across the street from the IMS Administration office at 4910 W. 16th Street, for the BC39 Draft Party from 5:30pm to 8:30pm Eastern where drivers will draw for their heat race positions. All cars entered will be randomized into a draft order for the heat race draft. Teams will be able to pick their heat race spot, either in person with a representative, or remotely through USAC officials. Any unrepresented team will be given the first available spot. The heat race position draft is open to the public with team members getting priority into the new USAC worldwide headquarters. Food and beverages will be available.

The popular Blast from the Past Vintage racers are part of another tripleheader show on Saturday, September 7 along with the T.P.Trailers NASCAR 358 Modifieds and T.P.Trucks NASCAR Sportsman racers at Grandview Speedway. Racing gets the green at 7:30 p.m. Spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m.
Last Saturday’s Sportsman feature winner Brad Arnold and Modified racer Ron Kline, who enjoyed his best effort of the season last Saturday, will have their cars on display and will be meeting fans as part of the weekly Low Down and Dirty Meet & Greet starting at 5 p.m.
Duane Howard, the five time Modified champion, continues to lead the standings with 4608 points. Brett Kressley has moved into second with 4197 counters followed by ten time champion Craig Von Dohren at 4192. Doug Manmiller holds fourth with 3872 followed by Rick Laubach’s 3834. In Sportsman competition Brad Brightbill is the man to beat with 3707 points. Second spot is held by Brad Grim at 3363 points while third belongs to two time champion Brian Hirthler at 3351 followed by Kyle Lilick with 3281 counters and Saturday night feature winner Brad Arnold has 3188. Eighteen races have been completed in each division.
The final NASCAR point races of the season are set for Saturday, September 14 as WNPV-AM Radio Champion’s Night is presented. The T.P.Trailers NASCAR 358 Modifieds and T.P.Trucks Equipment Sportsman will battle it out for the lucrative championships and top point finishing positions.
Fans will have the opportunity to win pairs of tickets for the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup race, October 6, at Dover International Speedway along with a four pack of “ride all day with coaster” tickets to the popular Knoebel’s Park, America’s largest free admission park which features the #1 Wooden Roller Coaster in the world, the Phoenix, all courtesy of WNPV.
Bound to get more attention for the Friday, September 20th is the fact that the Freedom 38 Sportsman race will be paying $2,000 to win with the top finishing Crate racer earning an extra $100. There is no license required and there is no entry fee. The Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series will also be part of the doubleheader show along with practice for the Modifieds entered in the Saturday Freedom 76.
Lap sponsorships and heat race sponsorships for the September 21st Freedom 76 are available $20 for laps and $200 for a heat race. Check in with Tina Rogers or Tommy Kramer at the track. And don’t forget that advance tickets are on sale for the 49th Annual Freedom 76 set for September 21. Buy in advance and pay $35 while on race day an adult ticket will run $40.
Enduro fans should get out their calendar and mark down these dates. Enduro and Vintage racing happens at Grandview on Saturday, September 28th, as long as it is not needed as a rain date for the Freedom 76, and again on Sunday, October 20 (a demo derby is included with this one).

MODIFIEDS AND TWIN 4 CYLINDER RACES HEADLINE WALL STADIUM THIS SATURDAY (SEPT. 7)
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ The All American Auto Group Modified stock cars and the Surfside collision 4 Cylinder Stocks will take center stage at Wall Stadium this Saturday night (Sept. 7) as they compete in headlining main events.
The Modifieds will race in a 40-lapper while double duty action will be offered for the 4 Cylinder Stocks with Twin 25-lappers. The Center State Engineering Sportsman cars and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars will full out the card in 25-lap main events. Grandstand seating will open at 5:00 p.m. and qualifying is set for 5:45 p.m. The evening’s main event action will follow around 7:00 p.m.
On the third mile high-banked paved oval “Retro Night” competition will see former champ and current Modified point leader Steven Reed of Jackson, Andrew Krause of Holmdel, Neptune's Chris Andretta, Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan, Derek Hopkinson of Toms River and Jackson's Jason Treat, just to name a few, competing in a 40-lap feature race.
The 4 Cylinder Stocks will be led into their twin main events by point leader Neil Rutt III of Edison, Alonzo Morales of Mt. Ephraim, Neptune City's Jeffrey Loesch and Ryan Maher of Neptune, plus many more.
Saturday’s schedule will see the competitor pit area open at 1:00 p.m. Regular practice will start at 3:00 p.m., while spectator seating will open at 5:00 p.m. Qualifying for the night’s program starts at 5:45 p.m. and main events will follow at 7:00 p.m.
Wall Stadium presents professional motorsports events on Saturday evenings through October 5. Special events are also featured in the fall including the “Spooky Spectacular” on October 19 and the season ending Turkey Derby on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend.

Former Champs Pauch Jr. & VanHorn Split Twin 20’s at New Egypt Speedway
(Aug. 31, 2019): 2017 track champion Billy Pauch Jr. of , Frenchtown, NJ won his fifth Vahlco Wheels Modified feature event of the season in the first feature, and 2018 track champ David VanHorn of Harmony, NJ took his fourth win of the season in the nightcap at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday night. For Pauch Jr. it was career win number 26, tying him for 4th on the all-time Modified win list with Keith Hoffman and Frank Cozze. VanHorn’s tenth career victory came in one of the most exciting feature events in track history, as he bested Mike Butler and Brandon Grosso in a torrid three car battle for the win.
In the first event, heat race winner TJ Lilly grabbed the initial lead ahead of PJ Oliver, Rich Rutski and Cale Ross. Lilly looked strong in the early going as Rutski took over the runner-up position. Rutski was persistent and finally wrestled the lead away from Lilly on lap 9, but this was short lived as PJ Oliver roared back to life and raced from 4th to the lead on a restart to lead at the halfway mark. Oliver began to stretch his lead as fifth starting Kevin Vaclavicek raced into second and 13th starting Billy Pauch Jr. was now third. Pauch Jr. wasted no time as he quickly charged into second and reeled in the leader. Lap 13 saw Pauch Jr. grab the lead before the caution flew for a tangle between top five runners Danny Bouc and Vaclavicek. The restart saw Pauch Jr. pull away with ease as he cruised to his third Modified victory this week. Ryan Krachun drove from his 9th starting spot to finish a very solid second, besting David VanHorn, Brandon Grosso and Rutski, who completed the top five. In victory lane, Pauch Jr chose the child holding the inversion number 11, meaning that the top 11 finishers would be inverted for the start of the second Twin 20.
Billy Osmun and Danny Bouc made up the front row for the second feature with Bouc racing out to the lead. Bouc quickly opened up a lead with the rest of the pack virtually on his heels racing 2, 3, and twice 4 wide for the top 12 positions in a wild and crowd pleasing battle. With positions changing radically on each passing lap in the top ten Bouc continued to lead each lap. Finally on lap 9 ground swell behind Bouc caught up to the leader as Mike Butler and three other cars passed him on both sides. Two-time winner Butler now had the lead at the halfway sign, but the pressure was relentless from behind as VanHorn and Brandon Grosso raced side by side on his back bumper. The following lap this duo caught the cushion riding Butler and brought the crowd to their feet as they raced under Butler to make it three-wide for the lead. Unknown to the crowd, they would stay on their feet for the remaining last half of the race, as VanHorn & Grosso would not give each other an inch, racing side by side around the speedway lap after lap, and pulling up under Butler to make it 3-abreast in every corner of the speedway. On lap 16 VanHorn showed that his relentless pounding on the bottom groove was paying off as he finally got the bite he was looking for off turn 2 and nosed ahead into turn three. Just as DVH grabbed the lead he got into a little fluid on the bottom of turn four forcing the car to push up the speedway as if he was diving into the pits directly in front of the leaders. VanHorn made an incredible save on the far outside of the track as Butler shot by with Grosso in tow. VanHorn had not only saved it, but was right on the back bumper of the leader down the frontstretch and tried to swing back under Butler, however Grosso was right there as well with the two making hard contact but immediately recovering and both picking up the chase once again. In one lap it was back to the three-wide battle again and as the white flag flew VanHorn grabbed the lead on the low side of turn 4. The final lap saw Butler and Grosso battling for second as VanHorn went on to capture the exciting 20 lap event. Butler came home second, Grosso third, followed by Billy Pauch Jr. and Cale Ross.
Steve Davis of Jackson, NJ was victorious in the Hammer Sportsman 20 lap feature event. Early race leader and new point leader Jim Housworth came home second. John Criscione, David Burns and last week’s winner Ryan Heim rounded out the top five.
The Larry’s Hot Rods and Harley’s NEWS Sprint cars saw a first time winner in victory lane, as Brian Spencer finally posted his first career win after being so close on so many occasions. Spencer got by race long leader Al Cheney, who was also looking for his first career win in a sprint car, and then held off point leader Rich Mellor for the victory. Cheney settled for third, trailed by Duane Nixon and Heidi Hedin.
Dom “the Bomb” Antonelli won his second straight Mike’s Performance 4-Cylinder 15 lap feature. Defending champ Joe Garey Sr. was second, Jim Avery third, Rob Longo fourth and Robby Dunn fifth.
This coming Saturday, Sept. 7th will be the John Romano Memorial 30 lap event for the Hammer Sportsman sponsored by 48Barriers.com along with G&M Dill Trucking and Amwell Auto Body. They will be joined by the Vahlco Wheels Modifieds, Crate Modifieds, and the Street Stocks. Many lap sponsorships and contingency bonuses including heat race $$ continue to come in for The John Romano Memorial event.
