Terry McCarl Masters VANKOR Texas Sprint Car Nationals Opener

WORTH, Texas (October 31, 2019) Halloween at Texas Motor Speedway delivered a few tricks, and all the treats for Terry McCarl, as the Altoona, Iowa driver wheeled TheSnowPlow.com/Destiny Motorsports No. 4 to his 14th career victory with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network on Night 1 of Tony Stewart presents the VANKOR Texas Sprint Car Nationals.

"Man, it feels good to win because this wasn't an old man track. This place was cowboy-up tonight so I just want to let everyone know old T-Mac can still cowboy-it up," said McCarl. "Doug just gave me a great car; I really have to thank him and everyone who helps us. Every name on this car means a lot."
McCarl's first career win at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network, the multi-time Knoxville Raceway track champion is the 15th different SawBlade.com A-Feature winner on the season.
Taking the green from sixth, McCarl rode fourth until Lap 8 when the caution flew for Harli White, who made contact trying to avoid a lapped car while running second.
Set to go green from third, Terry would end up taking off in second as race leader, Danny Jennings, started dropping water out of his engine. Giving the lead to Dylan Westbrook, the Hills Racing No. 47x shoe couldn't hold off the charge of McCarl with Terry edging into the lead Lap 9 by 0.017 seconds.
Pulling away from the field until the red lights flashed on as Channin Tankersley, who was running sixth, slammed the wall in the second turn after something came apart in the front suspension. Giving Westbrook a shot, the No. 47x could not keep pace, nor could anyone get a run with the field under caution again working Lap 23 for Seth Bergman.
Back to Lap 22 for the final drop of the green flag, Terry stretched his lead to 2.042 seconds before it was all said and done.
Getting a run on the final lap just as Dylan Westbrook suffered a mechanical issue, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. snagged second, and in doing so, secured his fourth consecutive championship with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.
Westbrook was able to hold onto third with Matt Juhl and Blake Hahn making up the top five.
Moving up from 11th, Colorado's Jake Bubak was sixth with Scott Bogucki earning Hard Charger honors with a run from 20th to seventh in the SawBlade.com No. 28. Tony Bruce, Jr. followed in eight with Robbie Price making up nine positions to finish ninth. Matt Covington likewise gained nine positions from 19th to complete the top ten.
A field of 40 drivers was on hand for the first night of Tony Stewart presents the VANKOR Texas Sprint Car Nationals at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. Five SCE Gaskets Heat Races were won by Sammy Swindell, McKenna Haase, Matt Juhl, Seth Bergman, and Danny Jennings. Hoosier Tire Qualifiers were topped by Tony Bruce, Jr., Brandon Hanks, and Dylan Westbrook. The two BMRS B-Features was won by Sammy Swindell and Robbie Price.
The 2019 season with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network concludes Friday, November 1, 2019, with the second round of Tony Stewart presents the VANKOR Texas Sprint Car Nationals. Howard Holds Off Pauch Jr. For $6,000 New Egypt All Star Cup Victory
New Egypt, NJ – Oley, PA’s Duane Howard held off a hard charging Billy Pauch Jr. to pick off his second career All Star Cup victory at New Egypt Speedway worth $6,000 on Saturday night. It was Howard’s fourth career NES win.
“I’ve been around this game a long time and to beat Billy here at his home track is something special. We came here a little under-motored but we freed the car up and got some momentum up in the feature. I got to thank Norm with the 357, he gives us great equipment to come and race with. It’s really fun to come here and race and beat the weather tonight. Thanks to the fans for sticking this out tonight, what a great-prepared racetrack, you can run the bottom and the top”, said Howard post race.
Ryan Simmons led the field to the green flag but it would be Duane Howard leading lap one. Howard would lead the first 11 laps with third place starter Brandon Grosso in tow. The first caution of the event would fly on lap twelve when Stan Frankenfield came to a stop on the backstretch. Grosso would jump out to the lead on the restart and would pull away from the field at will. It would all come undone for Grosso as the yellow fell for the halfway break, it appears the motor broke and he headed to the pit area handing the lead back to Howard. On the ensuing restart from the halfway break Cale Ross would spin in turn two to bring out the caution. 12th place starter David VanHorn would enter the picture as he reached the third position on lap 33. Following the restart Howard would again jump out to the lead with fifth-place starter Billy Pauch Jr. on his back bumper on lap 34. Pauch Jr. would work the bottom to perfection while Howard rim-rode on the top of the speedway. On lap 35 the caution would fly again for Cale Ross who spun again in turns one and two. As leaders choice, Howard chose the outside for the restart and again jumped out to the lead with Pauch Jr. inching ever so closely lap after lap on the back of Norm Hansell’s No. 357. Pauch would appear to be faster but just couldn’t manage to pull even with Howard to complete the pass. Pauch Jr. would try the top of the Speedway on lap 50 in turns three and four but would lose a bit of ground as Howard would pull out to a four car length lead. Pauch Jr. would make one last effort on Howard but it was to no avail as Howard would pick up his second All Star Cup victory. Pauch Jr. would come home second with Wade Hendrickson, David VanHorn and Frank Cozze completing the top five.
Brian Spencer would hold off a hard charging Joey Biasi to win his fourth straight Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Car event. 2019 track champion Rich Mellor, Heidi Hedin and Larry Drake would complete the top five.
Pennsylvania invader Branden Edgar picked up his first career New Egypt Speedway Sportsman win in just his second start. Art Liedl would come on late in the going to finish second with Jim Housworth Joseph Brown and Bill Liedtka completed the top five.
Joe Toth would win the rain shortened Crate Modified event. Toth who took the lead from Johnny Bangs on lap 10 said he would rather be lucky than good as he told Nick Leach post race had something break in the driveline and had to be pushed to Victory Lane. Ryan Godown Jr., Bangs, Jeremy Martino and Ryan Simmons rounded out the top five.
The final event of the 2019 schedule will be held on Saturday December 7th with our 22nd Annual Fall Swap Meet and Flea Market. Gates open to sell at 7:30am, it is free to browse and $15 to sell. Anything automotive is welcome to be sold.
Plans for the 2019 New Egypt Speedway awards banquet should be announced in the coming weeks.

A ROYAL WIN: Donny Schatz cuts points deficit down to 8 points with Port Royal win
Schatz’s 11th win of the season helped cut Brad Sweet’s points lead down by 24 points
PORT ROYAL, PA – Oct. 26, 2019 – Donny Schatz has spoken modestly about this year’s dramatic points battle with Brad Sweet. However, his on-track performance shouts anecdotes about it every race night.
Friday night at Port Royal Speedway it shouted load enough to capture everyone’s attention.
Schatz won his 11th World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series victory of the year, his third consecutive Series win at Port Royal Speedway and decimated Sweet’s points lead over him by 24 points due to Sweet finishing 12th – now Schatz is only eight points behind Sweet with three races to go.
“We just got to focus on what we do,” a modest Schatz said in Victory Lane. “There isn’t anything I can do to effect what he does. We never won a championship worrying about who we’re racing against or what they were doing. Obviously, what these (Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing) guys are doing is working. They made all of the right changes to the car.”
The Fargo, N.D. driver has been the king of the “Speed Palace” ever since the World of Outlaws returned to the half-mile track in 2014. Since then Schatz has yet to finish worse than third.
He started the night in dominant fashion by winning his Drydene Heat race and the first DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash.
When the 30-lap Feature for the first night of the Nittany Showdown went green Schatz was a rocket. He launched ahead of the field from his pole position and held the top spot into turn one. Brian Brown was in hot pursuit behind him, though.
While Schatz ran low for the first lap, Brown ran high. The FVP No. 21 built momentum and speed around the top, charging to Schatz’s rear bumper off each corner. Brown eyed an opening to the outside of Schatz off turn four, but the 10-time Series champion slammed the door shut before Brown could sneak his bumper between him and the wall.
Schatz then moved to the middle of the track and began to pull away from Brown. Behind the top-two Aaron Reutzel had charged from sixth to third on the first lap.
The Toco Warranty No. 15 was in lap traffic by Lap eight, but the slower cars did little to slow Schatz down.
The battle for second heated up near the midway point with Reutzel putting pressure on Brown and eventually darting underneath him for second on Lap 12. However, a red flag for Danny Dietrich hitting the wall in turn two came out before the lap was completed and Brown held second.
On the restart Schatz, again, bolted ahead of the field and Anthony Macri charged to third with Reutzel having a bad start.
While Schatz pulled away with the lead, Macri grew faster as the race progressed. He passed Brown for second with five laps to go and reeled in Schatz. Time was not in his favor, though. The Dillsburg, Pa. driver had to settle for second – his first World of Outlaws top-five finish – with Schatz a car length away. Brown rounded out the podium in third.
“The car was pretty solid all night long,” Macri said. “About halfway through the Feature I could pretty much put the car wherever I wanted. That’s always nice. This thing was operating smooth tonight.”
Schatz’s win was his 294th career Series victory and the second win in two weeks for the new Ford FPS 410 engine. The new engine’s capabilities were put to the test in the 30-lap Feature with fuel a potential issue.
“Thirty laps around this place with the way the conditions are was going to be questionable on fuel,” Schatz said. “They said, ‘Hey, you might want to conserve a little bit.’ I don’t know how much fuel we have left, but we made it. That’s the important part. Just the nature of the beast. These things pump a lot of fuel through them, a lot of air. We got a little extra air and fuel tonight with the Ford. Hats off to those guys. It’s been a fun project.”
Sweet was able to race from 18th to 12th on the fast track surface Friday night, but his performance wasn’t enough to withstand Schatz’s dominating run. The final night of the Nittany Showdown at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday will be Sweet and Schatz’s last chance to have the points lead before the final two races of the year at the World Finals in November.
“We’re running out of races to win, so it’s good to get one tonight,” Schatz said.

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series on Saturday, Oct. 26, will return to Port Royal Speedway for the final night of the Nittany Showdown. The start times have been changed with the front gate and pit gate opening at 11 a.m., Hot Laps scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and Heat races scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

STORYBOOK CLASSIC: David Gravel wins Jason Johnson Classic
Gravel wins at Lake Ozark Speedway, his 10th win of the year with Jason Johnson Racing
ELDON, MO – Oct. 19, 2019 – Jason Johnson had a black book of goals he’d like to accomplish. One was to promote a race.
On Saturday night at Lake Ozark Speedway it was checked off Johnson's list. His widow, Bobbi Johnson, promoted the Jason Johnson Classic with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.
The event started with rain but had a storybook ending.
Like a wave rising in the ocean before crashing down, the sea of people filling the grandstands simultaneously rose to their feet and applauded as David Gravel piloted the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 car to Victory Lane.
Family, friends and team members – all with smiles and some with tears – flooded Victory Lane to congratulate Gravel and Johnson on the victory – reminiscent of Gravel’s Knoxville Nationals win in August.
“Just couldn’t have been a better night,” said a jubilated Gravel. “We’ve had two weeks this year that are storybook weeks. To get this done and win tonight… it might look like it’s fixed, but it isn’t. Sheldon (Haudenschild) made me work for that race.”
The Watertown, Conn. driver was fast all night, winning his Drydene Heat race – holding off a hard charging Haudenschild to do so – and finishing fourth in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – won by Jason Sides, who also held off Haudenschild for the win.
When the 41-lap Feature when green Sides rocketed ahead of the field and threw his King Racing Products No. 7S car to the high side. He committed to the line in his pursuit for the win. If someone was going to pass him the bottom was their only option.
Haudenschild followed in line with Sides, riding the high side, trying to hunt him down. Behind them, Gravel worked his way by Brian Brown for third on Lap two and reeled in the top two every lap.
Sides got loose off turn two on Lap seven, allowing Haudenschild to close to his tail tank and Gravel to charge toward them both.
When the trio reached turn three Gravel slung his Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 41 car to the bottom of the track, sliding by Haudenschild and Sides for the lead. Gravel powered in front of them off turn four to officially take the lead on Lap eight, while Haudenschild also snuck by Sides to take second.
The battle was now Gravel versus Haudenschild. Both favored the cushion around the 1/3-mile speedway. Haudenschild’s NOS Energy Drink No. 17 was utilizing it better, though. He caught Gravel on Lap 14 and dove underneath him in turn three to steal the lead away from him.
Haudenschild led the next 11 laps, with Gravel keeping pressure from behind, before a caution spoiled the Wooster, Ohio driver’s night.
On the restart with 17 laps to go Haudenschild slid over the cushion in turn two and Gravel pounced. He charged underneath Haudenschild down the backstretch and sailed his car into turn three, gapping Haudenschild by two car lengths.
“Being on the outside I kind of pinched him (Haudenschild) a little bit,” Gravel said. “You’ve got to do those things to win races. I think I just had a little bit of an advantage on him on the double-file restart and was able to get the lead.”
Haudenschild kept Gravel in sight for the rest of the race but wasn’t able to put together another strong enough run to catch him.
“I would have liked to have raced in traffic a little bit more,” Haudenschild said. “I think it mixes it up and made a little bit more possibilities. When we were in clean air we were just ripping around there and waiting until we got traffic to get anything.”
Logan Schuchart had his own exciting race, charging from 11th to third – his second podium finish in-a-row.
“There in the beginning it was pretty interesting, we were battling back there with Brad (Sweet) and Donny (Schatz). That’s something you don’t want to get in between,” Schuchart said. “It was a good race. We were able to get up there on some restarts, pass some cars when we needed to.”
Sweet and Schatz – who are first and second, respectively, in the championship points – battled around each other most of the night. Sweet had the better night, racing from 12th to fourth, while Schatz raced from 14th to eighth. Sweet is now 32 points ahead of Schatz with only four races left this season – only two before the World Finals.
Gravel’s win was his 10th of the year – first at Lake Ozark Speedway – and 49th career World of Outlaws win.
With Gravel and Schatz having 10 wins and Sweet having 16, it’s the first time since 2000 that there are at least three drivers with 10 or more wins in the Series.
“To hit double digits this year is great,” Gravel said about his win total. “It’s a hard feat to do on the World of Outlaws tour. For us to do that, it feels awesome.
“This is for Jason’s family. Put a smile on their faces tonight and hopefully for the whole week coming up."
Bobbi Johnson called Gravel and the JJR team a “dream team” with how well they have meshed this year and the success they’ve had. Their victory helped put a period on the storybook ending for the inaugural Jason Johnson Classic – a big goal checked off Jason’s list.
“Tomorrow when you sit back and realize and think about all of the man hours and all of the time and all of the help and preparation, there’s a whole team that put on this deal and stood behind me,” Johnson said. “Just to feel like I checked off one of Jason’s things he always wanted to do… he had a black book and there’s a couple of things in there that’s not checked off, so that’s what I’m trying to do next.”

KANSAS CITY, KS – Oct. 18, 2019 – When Ford wanted to win Le Mans against the unstoppable Ferrari team it turned to legendary car designer Carroll Shelby, his team and his ace driver Ken Miles to get the job done.
Spoiler: They won.
A similar mentality was used when Ford wanted to return to Sprint Car racing with a new 410 engine, after a more than 20-year absence in the sport. It turned to NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, his team and his ace driver Donny Schatz.
Friday night at Lakeside Speedway, for the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown, Schatz brought a Ford powered World of Outlaws Sprint Car back to Victory Lane for the first time since August 26, 1998 when Jeff Swindell won at Southern Oregon Speedway.
It was the new Ford FPS 410 engine’s third appearance in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series – Schatz finished on the podium in his first two races with it.
“It’s pretty rewarding,” said Schatz about winning with the new Ford engine. “Sometimes you have to do things in life that are off the beaten path. That’s what this whole program is. They got a lot of dedication to it. Tony (Stewart) does. And what Tony asks us to do we do. Here we are.
“Rick (Warner, Schatz’s former crew chief who helped develop the FPS 410) has put a lot of time and blood and sweat and countless sleepless nights on it and to bring it out and to have two podiums at Williams Grove and a win tonight is huge… It’s going to be a live and learn experience. Tonight, it was a live on it. The next night we might be learning. But they did a great job and that’s what we’re here to do, have fun and win races with it.”
Schatz and his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing had to fight for the win all night. He finished second in his Drydene Heat race to Logan Schuchart, who was about half of a second faster than everyone else. Schatz then finished fifth in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash and had to change a motor after.
The motor wasn’t at fault for the change, Schatz said. It wasn’t sealed properly and leaked oil.
With a new FPS 410 installed for the Feature, Schatz put its full potential on display throughout the 30 laps.
The beginning of the race was plagued with multiple cautions for accidents and poor restarts. Brian Brown, in the FVP No. 21 car, led the field through it all. Daryn Pittman, David Gravel, Logan Schuchart, Brad Sweet and Donny Schatz battled amongst themselves for position in the short runs between cautions.
Schatz made his way from fifth to second by Lap 10.
A reg flag for Matt Juhl flipping on Lap 12 brought out an Open Red, allowing teams to fuel their cars and make adjustments.
When the Feature when back green Schatz didn’t waste time testing the limits of his new engine to pass Brown for the lead.
Brown hung on to the high side of the track through turns one and two, while Schatz searched for grip low. What he found allowed him to hammer the throttle and exit the corner side-by-side with Brown.
They drag raced down the backstretch and remained in line through turns three and four. However, Brown couldn’t match the lightspeed launch Schatz got off turn four. The Toco Warranty No. 15 shot to the lead on Lap 13.
Brown, of Grain Valley, Mo., was hungry for another hometown win, though. Continuing to favor the top line, he built momentum off turn two and charged to the outside of Schatz down the backstretch. They again raced side-by-side through turns three and four, but the FPS 410 continued to conjure remarkable speed off the corner.
Schatz took the lead and ran away with it. He found himself more than a second ahead of Brown a few laps after passing him.
Schuchart eventually charged his way to second by Lap 20 and Sweet moved into third by Lap 27. Time was running out to catch Schatz, though. Lap traffic became a factor in the closing laps, but before either driver could try to use it to their advantage a caution came out for Ian Madsen slowing in turn four.
When the green flag flew again, Schatz was gone. The 10-time Series champion sprinted away from the field and had almost a second lead over Schuchart when he crossed the finish line.
“I would’ve liked to see what would have happened if we kept going or had some lap traffic,” Schuchart said. “This is a great team. An awesome year. We would’ve liked to have gotten the win… But still a great night.”
Sweet’s third-place finish allowed Schatz to chip away at his points lead. The Fargo, N.D. driver is now 24 points behind Sweet, of Grass Valley, Calif., with five races left this season – three before the World Finals in November.
“We’re happy with a podium run,” Sweet said. “We were just a little bit off and fighting a few things. We’ll take a podium with the NAPA Auto Parts car and move on to tomorrow night.”
Schatz’s victory was his 10th of the year – 293rd career Series win – and first win in almost a month.
“These guys, it’s incredible what they do,” Schatz said about his team. “The race car was awesome. Yeah, we got to make changes to it for the extra power and a little bit extra weight, but they do an awesome job. It’s great to finally get a win again.”

Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Dominates Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals Opener
Bryan Hulbert - MESQUITE, Texas (October 18, 2019) A dominating performance for Sam Hafertepe, Jr. at the Devil's Bowl Speedway, the driver of the Heidbreder Foundation/Hills Racing Team No. 15h picked up his 10th SawBlade.com A-Feature win of the season with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.
His 47th career National Tour victory, the win was very emotional for Sam. Fighting back tears in Victory Lane, he dedicated the win to his Grandfather, George Hafertepe, who passed away last week at the age of 90.

"All we wanted to do was come out and win tonight for him, and we did it," stated Sam, who will join with family and friends to celebrate his Grandfather's life on Saturday.
Taking off from the right of the front row, Hafertepe chased the lead the opening nine laps as Harli White took off with the top spot. Finding traffic on Lap 7, that allowed the No. 15h to close. Battling with the Dustin's Dream No. 17w through the eighth circuit, Hafertepe snagged the top spot the following lap. Held up by the slower cars, the No. 11 of Roger Crockett took advantage of the situation to take over second on Lap 10.
Trying to run down the No. 15h, the caution lights slowed the field on Lap 11 as Scott Bogucki slowed to a stop in the second turn.
Caution again on the restart for Steven Shebester, the lights around the Devil's Bowl dimmed. Giving a couple of safety laps, officials called off the restart; doing so just, before the lights went completely dark.
Getting the problem fixed and lights restored, the field re-fired with Sam Hafertepe, Jr. absolutely dominating the last half of the A-Feature. Pulling to as much as a seven-second advantage before a caution on Lap 18 for Kevin Ramey, the final result was a lights out performance by the Sunnyvale, Texas shoe with a 3.894 second advantage over Roger Crockett at the drop of the checkered flag.
Diving the bottom of the Devil's Bowl through turns one and two on the Lap 18 restart, Matt Covington went from sixth to third and held on for his 36th career podium finish with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network. John Carney II ended up fourth with Harli White picking up her ninth career National Tour top-five finish.
Blake Hahn picked up a couple of spots to finish sixth with Jack Dover seventh. Chris Martin in eighth was followed by Dylan Westbrook. Picking up 10 positions to earn Hard Charger honors, Colorado's Jake Bubak completed the top ten.
A field of 31 drivers was on hand to open the 46th annual Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals. Four SCE Gaskets Heat Races went to Danny Jennings, Tucker Doughty, Roger Crockett, and Jack Dover. BMRS B-Feature action was topped by Kevin Ramey. Provisionals were used by Alex Hill and Casey Carter.
The 46th annual Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals continues Saturday, October 19 with gates opening at 3:00 P.M. and racing at 8:00 P.M. (CT). Admission is $25 with Seniors, Military, and Kids 13-15 admitted for only $10. Children 12 and under are free into the grandstands. Pit Passes each night are $30.
