New Egypt, NJ – 2019 Track Champions in all weekly support divisions were crowned on Saturday night at New Egypt Speedway during Hammer Electric Championship Night.
Brian Spencer (Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars), Art Liedl (Hammer Sportsman), Eric Palmer (Crate Modifieds), Bill Liedtka (Street Stocks) and Joe Garey Sr. (Mike’s Performance Center 4-Cylinders) were winners on the evening. Rich Mellor (Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars), Steve Davis (Hammer Sportsman), Joe Toth (Crate Modified), Bill Liedtka (Street Stocks) and Joe Garey Sr. (Mike’s Performance Center 4-Cylinders) all earned season-long point championships.
Brad Schaale led the early going in the 20-Lap Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Car feature with Larry Drake in tow. Schaale would continue to lead past the halfway point where the caution would fly for a spinning Drake. Brian Spencer who was in search of his third straight win in the division would line up third and steal the lead from Schaale on the restart. Spencer would flat out dominate the last 1/3 of the event scoring his third consecutive win in the class. Heidi Hedin would come home second, Duane Nixon third with Drake rebounding to finish fourth and Brad Schaale completing the top-5. After clinching the title in the previous race, 2019 track champion Rich Mellor would suffer a blown motor in his heat race and would be unable to start the main event.
Art Liedl picked up his first New Egypt Speedway win of the season aboard the Mongiello No. 94m which saw the 2019 track championship decided on the last lap. Virtue of his rough past couple races Bob Lineman Jr. started the Hammer Sportsman feature from the pole position. Lineman would lead the event until the halfway point where Art Liedl would pass him on inside lane coming off of two on a lap 10 restart. Jim Housworth who was in control of the points race most of the event came home 2nd with Steve Davis finishing third quintessentially scoring the 2019 Hammer Sportsman championship when Bob Lineman Jr. slipped up coming off of turn two on the last lap. Ryan Heim completed the top five.
The Crate Modifieds had the closest point battle heading into Championship Night. Eric Palmer led wire-to-wire in the Crate Modified event but it didn’t come easy. Palmer jumped out to the early lead with 2019 rookie graduate Nick VanWickle in tow. The pair would run side by side virtually the entire distance of the 20 lap event with VanWickle rim riding around the top with Palmer using a variety of grooves to keep VanWickle at bay. At one point Palmer even clipped the inside guardrail coming off of turn four late in the going. Palmer would pick up his second win of the 2019 season at NES with VanWickle coming home second, a hard-charging Ryan Simmons came home third, coming up just shy of the Crate Modified points championship with Jeremy Martino and Joe Toth completing the top five and picking up his first career NES track championship. For Toth he wins the 2019 Crate Modified crown without winning a points paying race.
Following clinching the 2019 Street Stock title a few weeks back, Bill Liedtka picked up his eighth Street Stock win of 2019 over Mick Search, Todd Dige, Brian Spencer and Joe Reid.
Following an exciting last lap in where Dom Antonelli took the white flag as the leader in the Mike’s Performance Center 4-Cylinders. Antonelli and Joe King Jr. headed down the backstretch on the final circuit with King to his inside. King then made contact with Antonelli putting him backwards in turn four and taking the checkered flag first but due to his contact with Antonellli, New Egypt Speedway officials deemed that King was over-aggressive with his move handing the win to Joe Garey Sr. Garey who was the 2018 NES 4-Cylinder champion would win the 2019 championship by just two markers over Mike Fox.
New Egypt Speedway will be dark on Saturday September 28th but will be back in action in a big way on Saturday October 5th with the 3rd Annual Legends of the Fall 75 for the Big Block vs. Small Block Modified event that will pay $7,500 to the winner and $500 just to start the main event. A plethora of invaders are planning on coming into try and steal the money on October 5th. The Crate vs. Sportsman will also be on the docket in a 25-lap feature paying $1,000 to win. Pits and Grandstands will open at 3pm on the 5th, Hot Laps are scheduled for 5pm with the first green flag of the evening flying at 6pm! Adult admission (16+) is $28, Seniors (65+) are $25, Teens (12-15) & Military w/ID are $18 with Kids 11 & Under being FREE! Pit admission will be $40.

BOOT HILL OUTLAW: Donny Schatz outguns field at Dodge City Raceway Park
Schatz dominates the first night of the Outlaw Boot Hill Showdown, winning his fifth race at the raceway
DODGE CITY, KS – Sept. 20, 2019 – The crowd of thousands hushed. Only the relentless wind was brave enough to make a sound. Anxiety and impatience brewed in people’s chest as they watched the field of Outlaws pace their steps before hammering the trigger, hoping to be the fastest to fire first.
Leading the field at Dodge City Raceway Park Friday night was 10-time World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz with Knoxville Nationals winner David Gravel to his outside. Both eyed another win for their team. Both looked to be the best in Kansas. And both were determined to take the lead on the start.
The green flag flew, and the showdown was on. Schatz hit the trigger first, launching to the lead. But Gravel fired back.
He dove to the bottom of turns three and four under Schatz and outgunned him for the lead down the front stretch. The reigning champion was loaded for another attack, though.
Gravel slid off the bottom on the exit of turn two, holding his car sideways onto the backstretch. With a clean run around the bottom of the track, Schatz fired back to the lead and went on to win the first night of the Outlaw Boot Hill Showdown weekend doubleheader. It was his ninth win of the season and second win in-a-row at the raceway – fifth overall.
“Hats off to my guys,” Schatz said. “They’re hitting on all cylinders. They always have. Sometimes the drivers falter and that’d be me. Tonight, we didn’t have any of them faults.”
Schatz started the night strong by qualifying fourth, while Gravel picked up his 16th Quick Time of the year. The two drivers then had their first front row battle of the night during the first Drydene Heat race. Schatz got the jump on the outside of Gravel at the start and drove away with the win.
Shortly after, the duo found themselves on the front row together again during the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash. Schatz started on the bottom with Gravel up top. Gravel got the jump this time. The Connecticut-native charged to the lead, but Schatz methodically ran him down and passed him for the win.
The 25-lap Feature placed Schatz and Gravel back on the front row for the start. After their one lap duel around the 3/8-mile track for the lead, Schatz pulled away from Gravel to about a straightaway lead.
“When they threw the green, I thought it was going to take a while for it (the bottom of the track) to go away,” Schatz said. “I think as you’ve seen what happened with David when he went down in there, we were able to get back by him right away. It went away real quick. I didn’t expect it to do that, either. I like it when it does that.”
Schatz reached lap traffic by Lap 6, but was able to pass every slower car with ease. However, nearing the end of the race, the pack of lap cars grew. They raced each other side by side, sometimes going three-wide. Schatz no longer had an easy passage by. There was now hope for Gravel, who began reeling in Schatz.
Before Gravel could take another shot at the North Dakota-native, the caution came out for Mike Woodruff stopping in turn two. While it put him on Schatz’s bumper for the restart, Schatz was rewarded with clean air again.
“Clean air was going to win there,” Gravel said. “Wish I could have had the lead there on the first lap, I thought we would have had a good chance to win there. Sucks to come up second. We had a shot. Lap traffic was my only shot.”
Once the race restarted Schatz launched back to the lead and cruised to his 292nd career Series victory, with Gravel second and Logan Schuchart third. He also increased his points lead over Brad Sweet, who finished ninth after struggling to find his way forward. Schatz now leads Sweet by 28 points.
“It’s not the year you’ve had when you’ve won 20 plus a year, but, hey, it’s a very competitive deal at the moment,” Schatz said. “I mean, look at all of the cars that have run good. We’re in a position to try and run for a championship and that’s all you can ask for when you start the year.”
He and the rest of the field will again be gunning for the win in the final day of the Outlaw Boot Hill Showdown at Dodge City Raceway Park on Saturday.

FREMONT, Ohio - When leader Caleb Griffith got into the back stretch wall and flipped with eight laps to go, Tim Shaffer was there to capitalize and went on to score the opening night win at Fremont Speedway for the 12th Annual Jim and Joanne Ford Classic.
The lap prior, Griffith made a fantastic move in turn two to regain the lead from Shaffer as they battled in heavy lapped traffic. But, flying down the back stretch Griffith got into the guard rail and flipped violently into turn three. He walked away uninjured, with Shaffer taking the lead. Shaffer, a four time and defending Ford Classic winner, drove away the final eight laps for his 19th career victory at "The Track That Action Built" on All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads Night featuring the FAST 410 Sprint Series.
"Cody Jacobs and I have a lot of time together and I want to keep it that way. He knows what to fix if I come in and look at him wrong. We work great together. Ron Gorby and his guys...hats off to them. They maintenance the car and got it ready for us and here we are," said Shaffer beside his Howard Johnsons of Lima/Indy Race Parts/Fast Signs backed #G1.
"Cody gave me a great car where I could run the bottom. The cushion up top was ferocious...to run that thing for 30 laps...if he (Griffith) could do it he deserved to win that thing. Back in the day I'd be up there too. We worked on getting our car good on the bottom or middle so we could move around and I think that's what happened in lapped traffic. He (Griffith) was pretty much committed to running up there and it probably shook him up a little bit when we got by him," added Shaffer in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.
Fremont's Paul Weaver dominated the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 sprint feature for his fourth victory of the season at Fremont. The $1,000 pay day was his 51st career win at the track, placing him eighth on the all-time win list.
"I thought a couple of lapped cars were trying to wreck me. I guess you're just paranoid when you're leading," said Weaver beside his B&B Drain Service/Hampshire Racing Engines/Adkins Motorsports/M&L Excavating/Schiets Motorsports/Miller Rigging/Weaver Performance Center backed #1W.
Fostoria, Ohio's Shawn Valenti bobbled on the last corner of the last lap in the dirt truck feature but was able to hold off Kent Brewer for his eighth feature win of the year. It was Valenti's 54th career win at the track, tying him with hall of famer Herbie Robinson for sixth on the track's all-time win list.
"To be able to climb the ladder and be tied with Herbie and be up there with the greats is pretty amazing. That last lap I threw it in there too hard and it took off up the race track and it was wide open after that and jumped the cushion and held on. That caution with three to go...I got over the cushion and Kent (Brewer) got under me. It's not every day you get a do-over in racing. We caught a break there. Thanks to the Babcocks for everything they do for me and Best Performance Motorsports, Craig Miller Trucking, Gressman Powersports and A Plus Auto Center said Valenti.
Kelsey Ivy and Brandon Long brought the field to green for the 30-lap Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint A-main but it was third starter Griffith who shot into the lead. Griffith pulled away as Ivy held second over Long, Shaffer, Travis Philo and Cale Conley.
Griffith's lead was 2.7 second by lap five as Ivy maintained second over Shaffer, Philo, Conley, Long and Byron Reed. It was near disaster for Griffith as he prepared to race into lapped traffic as DJ Foos and Stuart Brubaker tangled right in front of him but he avoided the incident. On the restart Griffith again pulled away as Shaffer took second with Ivy trying to hold off Philo and Conley for third.
Nate Dussel stopped on the track with 10 laps scored to bring out the caution. Griffith again rocketed away on the restart over Shaffer and Ivy as Reed, Conley and Philo battled for fourth. Ivy was forced to retire from the fray on lap 13 with front hub issues as the caution flew. Again when the green flew so did Griffith, opening a 1.4 second lead with 12 laps to go over Shaffer who had his hands full with Reed.
Heavy lapped traffic awaited the leaders with 10 laps to go and Shaffer used it to drive into the lead as they crossed the line to complete lap 22. Griffith drove back to the front exiting turn two but disaster struck as he prepared to enter turn three. With Shaffer no in the lead he was able to pull away from Reed as Conley and Philo battled for third.
Shaffer took the checkers with room to spare over Reed, Conley, Philo and Long.
Weaver and last week's winner Alvin Roepke brought the field to green for the 25 lap 305 A-main with Weaver gaining the advantage over Roepke, Mike Keegan, Valenti and Matt Foos. Zeth Sabo stopped with seven laps in just as Weaver was finding the back of the pack.
On the restart Bobby Clark stopped but when the green came back out Weaver checked out and held a two second lead over Roepke by lap 12. Meanwhile Valenti, Foos and Keegan were entertaining as they battled for third. With eight laps to go Weaver's lead was 3.8 seconds but he encountered heavy lapped traffic.
Weaver made great moves to slice through traffic and never lost a tick to Roepke. In fact, with five laps to go Weaver had put three lappers between himself and Roepke as Valenti and Foos continued to battle hard for third.
Weaver lapped up to 11th place as he took the checkers over Roepke, Valenti, Foos and Ricky Peterson.
Dustin Keegan and Dan Hennig brought the field to green for the 20 lap Burmeister Trophy Dirt Truck feature with Hennig grabbing the lead over Jeff Ward, Keegan and Valenti. Hennig maintained the lead until the caution flew on lap five for Jamie Miller. On the restart Valenti drove around Hennig to take the lead with Ward, John Brooks, Keegan and Kent Brewer battling hard for third. Brooks was able to drive into second on lap eight with Brewer moving into third.
As Valenti maintained the lead, Brooks and Brewer ran side by side over the next seven laps with Brewer finally taking the spot before Ben Clapp brought out the caution with six laps to go. Following a caution on the restart, when the green flew again, Valenti had his hands full with Brewer as the pair raced side by side. When Valenti got over the cushion in turn two on lap 17, it looked like Brewer would drive to his second win. But, a multi-truck crash brought a halt to the action and put Valenti back in front.
Valenti was able to hold off Brewer but on the last corner of the last lap again bobbled on the cushion but Brewer couldn't capitalize. Valenti took the checkers over Brewer, Brooks, Ward and Cory McCaughey.
Fremont Speedway will wrap up the 2019 season with the 12th Annual Jim and Joanne Ford Classic featuring a $10,000 to win 40-lap feature for the FAST 410 Sprint Car Series on Kear's Speed Shop Night. Kear's will also hand out nearly $10,000 worth of products to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The 305 sprints and dirt trucks will battle for $1,000 to win their respective features.

Aaron Reutzel leads All Stars to Williams Grove Speedway victory lane for second time of 2019
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (September 20, 2019) - Less than a month after etching his name in Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 history books by becoming the first full-time Series regular to defeat the Pennsylvania Posse at Williams Grove Speedway, Clute, Texas-native Aaron Reutzel achieved the once-elusive feat yet again, this time during Tommy Hinnershitz Memorial competition on Friday night, September 20.
Ultimately a wire-to-wire performance by the defending All Star champion, the route to Williams Grove Speedway victory lane was far from plain sailing, as Reutzel was forced to withstand continuous pressure from Kasey Kahne Racing’s James McFadden, as well as a late charge by The Grove’s all-time win leader, Lance Dewease. Impressive enough, Reutzel’s victory bumps his All Star win total to an impressive 14 in 2019, simultaneously increasing his championship point lead to 98 markers over six-time champion, Dale Blaney.
Despite a last-ditch effort to drive around Reutzel during the final two circuits, Dewease was forced to settle for second, followed by Gio Scelzi, James McFadden and Brian Montieth.
“Hats off to this crew. This was one hell of a team effort,” an elated Aaron Reutzel said in victory lane, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/Folkens Brothers Trucking/Fischer Body Shop/No. 87 sprint car. “Twenty second laps around this place is really hard. We’ve been working at trying to get better in the slick. Tonight, we basically opened our Port Royal notebook and put that in our car. It was like magic again. Our format is nice because it gives us a chance to test. It’s nice to go out in the dash and try things.”
Launching to a convincing command right from the drop of the green, Aaron Reutzel led the first handful of circuits without a hiccup keeping McFadden, Dewease and Scelzi in check as the first eight circuits checked off the counter. Just as the lead cars were about to hit slower traffic for the first time, yellow flags appeared giving Reutzel the opportunity to start fresh in clean air.
When green flag action commenced, Reutzel returned to his familiar pace, once again relying on the cushion through turns one and two and the bottom groove through turns three and four. By the time the Texan found the back of the field on lap 18, McFadden and Dewease had found Reutzel, soon creating a three-car battle for the top spot.
Lap after lap, McFadden hounded Reutzel for the lead keeping the No. 87 within a car length through lap 27. In a desperate attempt to drive around Reutzel the following circuit, McFadden charged to the top of the corner at the entrance of turn three, hoping to use the cushion as a slingshot to drive around the All Star point leader. Unfortunately for McFadden, the move to the top proved costly, eventually resulting in a pair of lost spots to Dewease and Gio Scelzi.
Now with Reutzel in clear view, Dewease attempted to chase down the front-runner during the final two circuits. Although closing in to a half second, Dewease was out of time.
“I kept watching the scoreboard and I kept seeing McFadden in second,” Reutzel continued. “When Dewease got into second, I could kinda hear someone behind me. I wanted to try and run harder, but at the same time, I didn’t want to get caught up in any of the lapped cars.”
The Tommy Hinnershitz Memorial triumph earned Reutzel $6,000.
The sixth running of the prestigious Dirt Classic at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pennsylvania, will follow Williams Grove action on Saturday, September 21. Utilizing a unique format to help determine the evening’s outcome, complete with two rounds of heat race action, the 2019 Dirt Classic champion will leave with a $20,000 winner’s share, a monster portion of the $60,000+ purse that will be handed out at the conclusion of the evening's main event. Hot laps are set to fire off at 6:30 p.m., sharp.

BACON BAGS LATE-RACE WIN ON NIGHT TWO AT HOCKETT/MCMILLIN MEMORIAL
WHEATLAND, MO. (September 20, 2019) - Fans at Lucas Oil Speedway played witness to an instant classic in Friday's Rockwell Security preliminary program. The 25-lap POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League feature offered a handful of lead changes, side-by-side racing through the pack, and a race-deciding move in the closing laps. Ultimately, it was Brady Bacon capping a perfect night as he pounced on Mario Clouser on lap 23 and survived for an epic win on night two of the ninth annual Jesse Hockett / Daniel McMillin Memorial.
Entering the feature, a trio of drivers including Brady Bacon, Wyatt Burks and Logan Seavey all had the chance to record a perfect night with a feature win. Bacon, Burks and Seavey each set quicktime in their respective groups, then they all won their heat races from fourth, and they each won qualifiers from sixth, slotting them sixth, seventh and eighth in the 25-lapper.
Catching the eight-car inversion and landing on the front row, however, was Anthony Nicholson of Bartlett, Tenn. with Brandon Mattox of Cory, Ind. Nicholson, who won Friday's Hockett/McMillin Memorial prelim in 2018, commanded the opening circuit while Mario Clouser of Auburn, Ill. drove into second.
Seavey of Sutter, Calif. and Bacon of Broken Arrow, Okla. came storming into the top five early on as Clouser reeled in Nicholson and lighted a fight for the top spot. Locked in a side-by-side affair, Nicholson and Clouser went toe-to-toe as Nicholson kept his No. 16 glued to the low line and Clouser continued to push the cushion aboard his No. 6 machine.
Officially taking the lead on lap 12, Clouser cleared Nicholson and began to pull away, but a few circuits later on lap 16, Bacon came bursting into the second spot and had his sights set on Clouser. Switching to the bottom of turns three and four, Bacon failed to make much ground early in his chase for the lead, but a costly bobble on the cushion from Clouser allowed the "Macho Man" to close quickly in the final laps.
Going wheel-to-wheel for the lead on lap 23, Bacon and Clouser sent the crowd into a frenzy as the race heated up. Launching a slider into turn one, Bacon sent his No. 410 to the point as Clouser went for a crossover off turn two and prepared for his own slider into turn three. However, his momentum wasn't enough, as Bacon mashed the gas and powered around the outside to see the white flag waving.
The final 3/8th-mile went by without hesitation for Brady Bacon, who sealed the deal on his fourth POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League win of 2019. Completing a perfect night, Bacon's tally of 264 points from quicktime, heat win, qualifier win, and feature win solidified himself as the Jesse Hockett / Daniel McMillin Memorial high point man.
Mario Clouser followed Bacon to the line with a heartbreaking, but strong second-place result for his No. 6 entry. Logan Seavey rounded out the podium in the Donnie Cooper No. 01 after making a late charge to pass Anthony Nicholson. Closing out the top five was Nicholson in fourth and Dave Darland with a fifth-place finish in the JD Black owned No. 7R.
Also finishing inside the top ten was Brian Beebe in sixth, Wyatt Burks in seventh, Katlynn Leer in eighth, Chris Parkinson in ninth and Brandon Mattox in tenth.

Baughman Flies To Friday Night Score At 9th Annual Hockett/McMillin Memorial

(September 20, 2019) Denied the win in Thursday's opener, Josh Baughman was not about to let that happen again as the Precision Catalyst No. 17 led start to finish on the second night of the General Tire Hockett/McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.
With a fifth on Thursday to go with his win, Baughman has secured the pole for Saturday's $10,000 to win Hockett/McMillin Memorial finale.

"We've been close here and just hadn't been able to get it done, so this is pretty cool," commented Baughman of his first career win at Lucas Oil Speedway. "We have Fischer Body Shop here and this is their backyard, so it's really good to win for them and everybody back home. Aaron [Reutzel] won tonight too at Williams Grove, so this is the second time we've both won on the same night. I feel like that says a lot about our entire team."
Leading start to finish for his second career SawBlade.com A-Feature triumph, Baughman's night was nearly cut short a couple of times as the cushion became deeper and deeper off the fourth turn.
"It was getting narrow in turn-four. Just real slick on exit to a big curb and that wall has gotten me plenty of times here. I know how bad it hurts and I didn't want to give it up for this team. I can't say enough for Dylan and Wayne, plus we have R.J. with us this weekend. These guys gave me a badass car every time we pulled onto the track tonight."
Keeping Roger Crockett at bay through a complete restart that came after Sam Hafertepe, Jr. went sideways and collected Bales, Seavey, and Phillips, another red on Lap 5 for Scott Bogucki saw the Rocket Designs No. 11 take another shot at the lead.
Pulling away to nearly three seconds as the race cleared the half-way point, one of Baughman's encounters with the cushion allowed Crockett to close in with Seth Bergman in tow. Getting the run for the runner-up spot on Lap 16, the Young Tool Co. No. 23 grabbed the spot on the following lap. Making up more time on the No. 17, the red lights came on one last time working Lap 19 for Brad Bowden who biked hard and flipped in turn four.
Back to the 18th lap on the restart, Bergman kept pace but could not keep Baughman in striking distance with the Odessa, Texas driver pulling away to a 0.621-second advantage at the checkered flag over Seth Berman with Roger Crockett holding on to complete the podium.
Jumping from Victory Lane with the POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League 10th on the grid with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series, Oklahoma's Brady Bacon worked to a fourth-place finish with Derek Hagar charging forward 14 positions to complete the top five.
Moving up 10 spots, Jack Dover gabbed sixth with Blake Hahn rallying in the last half of he feature to climb from 18th to seventh. Up as high as sixth from 17th, Mark Smith ended up slipping to eighth with Jonathan Cornell and Tim Crawley making up the top ten.
With Preliminary Nights in the books, Josh Baughman (312) will be joined by Blake Hahn (305) on the front row of Saturday's A-Feature. Roger Crockett (292), Derek Hagar (286), Dylan Westbrook (259), Paul Nienhiser (252), Ayrton Gennetten (249), and Jack Dover (249) made up the top eight that automatically lock into the A-Feature. The remainder of the field will start their night on one of four Last Chance Qualifiers.
Overall, 71 drivers from 15 states and three counties have taken part in the 2019 Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.

GRANDVIEW SPORTSMAN CHAMP BRAD BRIGHTBILL WINS FREEDOM 38 SPORTSMAN FEATURE AND JOE KAY EARNS HIS FIRST CAREER MID-ATLANTIC SPRINT SERIES FEATURE WIN; FREEDOM 76 TAKES PLACE TONIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA September 21, 2019 . . . Brad Brightbill and Kevin Hirthler thrilled the fans in the stands Friday night at Grandview Speedway with a spirited battle for the top spot in-and-out of heavy lapped traffic over the final dozen laps or so in the sixth annual “Night Before The Sixer” Freedom 38’er, with Brightbill coming out on top to earn the $2,000 payday at the checkered.
For Brightbill, who just a week earlier earned his first career Sportsman track championship at the Bechtelsville, PA dirt track, it was career win number 10 and Brightbill’s fifth win of the 2019 racing season. The popular triumph was his first since August 17 of this season. The Sinking Spring, PA second-generation chauffeur became the sixth different winner in six Freedom 38’er events overall to date at the high-banked third-mile oval.
Brightbill captured checkered flags in his heat race and the feature to give him a clean sweep for the evening.
Also on the card were the Delaware Auto Exchange Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series winged 305 Sprint Cars, with Dublin, PA based self-employed electrician Joe Kay powering out on top with the drop of the green after starting from the pole position and leading every lap in the 25-lap feature to earn his first career MASS victory by a safe margin. Kay was never seriously challenged in the fray, leading by nearly a full straightaway through much of the event.
“I can’t really put it into words,” revealed Brightbill afterwards. “I am so thankful for all the guys who helped me this season. To go out on a high note like this, it really means a lot.”
Nate Brinker, 24, of Allentown, PA started on the pole in the 38-lap Sportsman main event as the 26-car starting field took the green and was the race leader until Kenny Bock, who started outside row one, grabbed the top spot on lap 4.
By lap 8, Brightbill, who started from fifth by the luck of the draw, climbed into the runner-up role, followed by Brian Hirthler and Brinker. The 26-year-old Birdsboro, PA resident, Bock, remained out in from as the laps clicked off, with Brightbill closing the gap by lap 14.
Laps 15 and 16 saw Bock and Brightbill in a fan-pleasing battle, with Brightbill exiting turn 4 on lap 17, driving under Bock to become the new race leader.
“Kenny was running me pretty good there and I just couldn’t shake him on the outside,” explained Brightbill. “As the track started to get slicker our car just started to come around and we were lucky to prevail there at the end.”
Kevin Hirthler, 39, of Boyertown, PA, who won the event in 2018, started from eleventh-place and hustled his way up to fourth-place by lap 9. Ten circuits later, Hirthler advanced into second-place and lap 20 saw the only caution of the night as Ryan Beltz spun out in turn 2.
When racing resumed it was Brightbill rocketing out in front of Kevin Hirthler, as Bock battled wheel-to-wheel with 27-year-old Jared Umbenhauer for third for a lap, prior to Umbenhauer eventually taking the spot on lap 22.
With 26 tours complete, Kevin Hirthler closed in on the rear of Brightbill’s homebuilt mount and the battle for first was on. Hirthler challenged Brightbill racing in-and-out of lapped traffic, but Brightbill fought off every challenge with ease.
“I didn’t know how close anyone was,” Brightbill was saying. “I just tried to pick and choose very carefully where I went without getting tangled up with anyone else in lapped traffic. Things just turned out in our favor.”
“It was a tough track, being so narrow,” offered Kevin Hirthler. “I understand the lapped cars are out there racing for position too and I wished we could have had some good side-by-side racing for the lead, but that’s not how it turned out. Everyone was running clean and it is what it is.”
Brightbill brought home the victory over Kevin Hirthler, who earned an additional $100 as the first Crate powered car to cross the line, with Jared Umbenhauer finishing third, after starting thirteenth, with 37-year-old Brian Hirthler of Perkiomenville, PA fourth, after starting from eighth, and Bock rounding out the top five finishers in that order.
“We were fighting the car all night and finally figured it out before the feature,” announced the third-place finisher from Richland, PA, Umbenhauer. “I couldn’t tell who the race leader was racing in all that lapped traffic. I had to look up at the leader’s board to see just who was where at one point. It feels good to finally finish a feature race for once.”
Heat race victories with a total of 42 Sportsman on hand went out to Brightbill, Jesse Leiby, Brad Grim and Brian Hirthler, with consolation wins earned by Brad Arnold and Mike Toth.
In the MASS Sprint Car feature, Kay started on the pole and immediately jumped out on top over 29-year-old Eddie Wagner, of Franklinville, N.J., who started outside of row one. Dominic Melair of Jamison, PA followed as the third-place car.
Christian Rumsey, 21, of Middletown, N.Y. advanced to fifth-place on lap 10, just behind 36-year-old Jon Haegele out of Rockledge, PA, and climbed to fourth at the halfway point, just prior to Wagner spinning out all alone in turn 2, bringing out the only caution of the event that started 20 cars.
With the new green Kay again powered out in front and by lap 17 he was nearly a full straightaway out in front over Melair, Rumsey, Haegele and recently crowned champion Bordentown, N.J. veteran racer Larry McVay, who’ll turn 56-years-old on September 28, in that order. That’s how the race finished, as Kay authored his first-ever MASS 305 Sprint Car feature win.
“Damn, this feels good,” announced Kay, who also races 600 wingless micro sprints throughout the season. “I tried not to worry and not make any mistakes while I was running out in front. I tried to be consistent and just hit my marks each lap. I did my best to not get tangled up with any of the lapped cars. Tonight we just had all our ducks in a row.
“I’ve got to thank Brian Carber and my good friend Tim Tanner Jr. They both helped me out and Tanner Jr. is always there if I need something. This is just totally awesome. It feels great,” Kay pointed out.
Heat victories for 20 MASS 305 Sprint Cars went to Daniel Leaper and Dominic Melair. No consolation was needed.
Some 43 358 Modified campaigners showed up for a night of practice sessions throughout the night preparing for the Freedom 76 scheduled for Saturday night. In all the pits were packed with a grand total of 105 race cars for the evening of competition.
Next on the agenda is the $25,000 to win 49th Annual Freedom 76 for Modifieds. Racing will get the green for the first qualifying event at 7 p.m. Adult admission is $40, with youngsters 6 through 11 paying $10 and kids under 6 admitted free. Advance ticket holders are admitted at 3 p.m. with general admission tickets on sale at 3:30 p.m.
