Brotherly Battle: Ian Wins Battle of Madsen Brothers on opening night of 39th Annual AGCO Jackson Nationals

By: Tony Veneziano

JACKSON, MN - June 1, 2017 - The Madsen brothers are nothing short of exciting every time they strap into a sprint car. The intensity level is often ratcheted up even more when they are racing each other for a win. They lived up to this moniker Thursday on the opening night of the 39th Annual AGCO Jackson Nationals for the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series. While younger brother Ian led all 25 laps of the main event, older brother Kerry gave him a run for his money, especially on a late-race double file restart.

Ian fended off Kerry on that restart, which saw the elder brother get a monster run on the high side of the track heading down the front straightaway. As the laps wound down, the leaders encountered lapped traffic, with Kerry closing back in on Ian, nearly stealing a win on the last lap. The finale margin of victory was a scant three-tenths-of-a-second.

"When you come to race with the World of Outlaws, the double-file restarts are always tough," said Ian Madsen. "It's pretty cutthroat and can go either way. You have to give it your all. I'm really thankful we could get the job done tonight. We've had an awesome car lately and have been strong with the World of Outlaws all years. It's great to finally get one."

The race started with I. Madsen on the pole, quickly jumping out to a lead before a caution with four laps in the books. On the ensuing double-file restart, I. Madsen chose the low side of the track. David Gravel actually took the lead in turns one and two on that restart, but a red flag, before that lap was completed, kept I. Madsen in the lead for the next restart, which was single-file.

The win was Madsen's second with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series, with the first coming in 2013 at Deer Creek Speedway, also in Minnesota.

"Jackson is kind of like a home track for us," said Ian Madsen. "We gave a lot of friends, fans and supporters of the KPC team here tonight. I can't thank my team enough. This is awesome. Minnesota is kind of close to home and I really like the tracks. Thanks to Tod (Quiring) and everyone for putting this event on. Hopefully it gets bigger and bigger each year."

Kerry Madsen, the defending winner of the AGCO Jackson Nationals, started third and had a torrid battle in the early going with David Gravel, before moving into second behind his brother. Kerry had a strong car on the top side of the half-mile and used this to his advantage to keep pace with brother as the laps wound down.

"That last restart, I was thinking, 'You gave me the top' and I got a good run," said Kerry Madsen. "I thought I was going to get him, but just didn't quite have it. That last corner, the last lap, I thought I had position and kind of wished I had gone in there a little harder and maybe was a little forceful. I just didn't get it done, but the Go Muddy/AGCO car was great. This car is a rocket ship right now and it's fun to drive and I am enjoying every minute of it."

Brad Sweet finished third aboard his No. 49 NAPA machine for Kasey Kahne Racing. Sweet lined up sixth and worked his way into the top-five in the early going. He used a couple of strong restarts to gain spots on his way to a podium finish.

"It's fun watching the Madsen brothers up there," said Sweet. "Kerry definitely gave his brother a run for his money. I guess he had to make his little bro work for it. The key was to get through this first night. Our NAPA car has been fast, so we'll come the next two nights and hopefully can get a win."

Current series point leader Donny Schatz finished fourth in the Arctic Cat machine for Tony Stewart Racing, while Danny Lasoski rounded out the top-five. David Gravel, who ran among the lead pack in the early going, ended up sixth, after nearly getting into the wall coming off turn four, battling for the second spot. Jason Sides was seventh, with Tim Kaeding eighth, while Sheldon Haudenschild came from 16th to ninth. Shane Stewart rounded out the top-10.

The 39th Annual AGCO Jackson Nationals continues on Friday, June 2, with another complete race program for all three sprint car classes.

Tickets for the remaining two nights of the 39th Annual AGCO Jackson Nationals, featuring the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series, along with the Upper Midwest Sprint Car Series (UMSS), Midwest Sprint Touring Series (MSTS), Nebraska 360 Sprint Series and the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Cars at the Jackson Motorplex can be purchased online at slspromotions.ticketforce.com or at the track.

TONY STEWART & RICO ABREU JOIN ALL STAR SPRINTS IN THUNDER SHOW THURSDAY, AUGUST 17

BECHTELSVILLE, PA (June 1, 2017) – Two of the country’s most popular drivers head towards ‘The Hill’ in a special event of epic proportions.

When the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series heads to Grandview Speedway on Thursday, August 17, three-time NASCAR Cup Champion Tony Stewart and two-time Chili Bowl Nationals champion, Rico Abreu, will strap into a 410 sprint car and compete with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions.

Tony Stewart

Rico Abreu

Brought to you by Levan Machine & Truck Equipment, you’ll find “Smoke on the Hill” and Rico Abreu when the green flag falls for the third Annual Thunder Cup -- a 30 lap, $5,000 to win 410 sprint car special event.

Levan Machine & Truck Equipment located in Fleetwood, PA (just outside of Reading, PA) is part of the Thunder on the Hill family of sponsors. Levan Machine & Truck Equipment is a full-service machine shop and custom truck up-fitting center for Central Pennsylvania. Levan also provides a full line of truck bodies, van interiors, and utility and service bodies. They are the local Boss Snowplow distributor including snowplows and salt spreaders; a Knapheide retailer for truck bodies and lift gates, and a Weatherguard distributor for van and truck interior products. Levan Machine & Truck Equipment also provides repair as an ASE Blue Seal recognized service location. For full details on all of Levan Machine & Truck Equipment products and services log onto www.levanmachine.com

The Levan Machine & Truck Equipment visit will mark Tony Stewart’s first in action racing appearance at the Grandview Speedway located about 50 miles south of NASCAR mainstay, Pocono Raceway.

"Grandview was one of the first events I added to my schedule this year,” Tony Stewart explained. “After attending the race last year as a spectator and owner of the All Stars, I knew I had to participate in the race this year. As a sprint car fan, it is one of the most exciting tracks to watch a sprint car race. I cannot wait to get my [No.] 14 car unloaded on the Hill. The competition will be nothing short of spectacular. I hope we can have a good night and put ourselves in a position to compete for the win.”

Abreu, one of the most exciting and most popular Sprint Car drivers in the country is anxious to get to the Berks County dirt track.

“I’m really excited to get to Grandview, I've heard a lot of great things about the track,” Abreu stated. “I've got a lot of fans in Pennsylvania and I don't get to race that far east too much, but definitely look forward to that night with the All Stars and all the tough Pennsylvania cars. It's always fun going to new tracks especially in an area known for some of the best sprint car drivers in the country."

Stewart and Abreu join more than 15 full-time Arctic Cat All Stars competitors, but while the All Stars bring an elite group of drivers, a battalion of Central Pennsylvania’s top stars are prepared to defend their home turf – and when the greatest Sprint Car drivers in the world do battle it is sure to be unpredictable, especially “on the hill”.

Expected top guns include nine-time Grandview 410 Sprint Car winner and six-time Thunder on the Hill Champion, Greg Hodnett; along with past Thunder Cup winner Danny Dietrich, Lucas Wolfe, Freddie Rahmer, Alan Krimes, Brandon Rahmer. While series regulars include Chad Kemenah, Caleb Armstrong, Ryan Smith, Max Stambaugh, T.J. Michael and Caleb Helms.

About the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions

All Star Enterprises, LLC, owned by Tony Stewart, d/b/a the All Star Circuit of Champions, is a winged sprint car series. The All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series is one of the oldest traveling 410 sprint car organizations and is a staple of grassroots, open-wheel racing. Formed in 1970 by Bud Miller, the series has largely been considered the first 'outlaw' Sprint Car organization of the modern era. After a 10 year stint as owner of the All Stars, Miller passed control of the series to Bert Emick in 1980; a reign that would continue through 2002. Guy Webb then purchased the series from Emick in the summer of 2002 and served as the series President for the next 12 years. Motorsports entrepreneur Tony Stewart agreed to terms with Guy Webb to become the sole owner of the original winged sprint car tour in January of 2015.

Stewart Beats the Boss at Lawrenceburg Speedway Larson charges from sixth for runner-up finish

LAWRENCEBURG, IN. - May 29, 2017 - In an action-packed 35-lap Feature at the Lawrenceburg Speedway, Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series standout and Larson Marks Racing team owner, Kyle Larson used a line that no one dared to run, enabling him to the lead with over 10-laps remaining. A mistake in traffic by Larson allowed his driver, Shane Stewart to get back by his Boss in lap-traffic for his second World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series win of the 2017 season at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

The fans at Lawrenceburg Speedway were treated to one of the best World of Outlaws races of the season. It was a day that had everything from, slide-job passes, several lead changes, drama and much more.

"Man, that was blast," said Kyle Larson. "I hope you [fans] enjoyed that because that was awesome from my seat. That was one of the most intense Sprint Car races I've ran."

With three-time Lawrenceburg Speedway winner, Donny Schatz starting on the front row of the 35-lap Feature, he knew he had to contend with some heavy-hitter drivers in the field such as Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, David Gravel, Shane Stewart and the rest of the 25-car field.

2016 Lawrenceburg Speedway winner, Shane Stewart started the day off on the wrong foot. During hot laps, the team found an oil leak, but wasn't able to find the cause. The Larson Marks Racing team decided to change the powerplant on the No. 2 machine for precautionary reasons.

During the opening lap of the Feature event, Schatz rocketed out front but he was quickly challenged by Stewart, who started the race in the fourth position.

Schatz was able to hold the lead for the opening six laps, until the leaders got into slower lap traffic. Stewart, running second, was able to pounce on Schatz and overtake the No. 15 machine for the lead. The two would run side-by-side until the only yellow flag of the event was displayed on lap 13.

Stewart would hold the lead for the restart with Schatz in second. Kyle Larson who had started the event in the ninth spot had worked his way up to the sixth position.

A great restart by Larson propelled him from sixth to fourth but he didn't settle there as he quickly worked his way up to the runner-up position.

"I found a line just before the caution, running just above the cushion in Turns 1 and 2 and do a little bit of the same in Turns 3 and 4; was able to get to the lead like that," added Larson.

Larson Marks Racing co-owner didn't take it easy on his driver, as the No. 57 of Larson and the No. 2 of Stewart came together battling for the lead in turn two.

"I feel like I race [Shane] harder, it's always fun racing Shane," said Larson.

"I was just out there for a cool drive, until [Larson] came up," said Stewart. "I was shocked when [Larson] went by me up [top]; its Kyle Larson, what can you say?"

Larson would get by the No. 2 of Stewart for a couple laps as the two approached lap traffic.

"I got to lead there and made a mistake in traffic and [Shane] got back by," said Larson. "I cut across [the cushion] a little too soon and got in the holes and starting bouncing, that was what allowed Shane to get back by me. I knew I showed [Shane] my line and what I was doing so it was going to be tough to get back by him. We had a couple more opportunities at [Shane] but we just ran out of time, but that how's racing goes. I can't wait to race Sprint Cars some more."

After getting back by his Boss in lap traffic, Stewart was able to put a lap car between him and the No. 57 of Larson on the white flag lap giving Stewart the separation he needed to go on to repeat as winner at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

"It was fun racing against my car owner, definitely a fun race. I always enjoy coming here. The guys gave me a great car; they work endless hours to keep this car fast. I'm just the lucky man that gets to drive it."

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series returns to action for three-nights at the The 39thAnnual AGCO Jackson Nationals at the Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, MN on Thursday, June 1 - 3. Tickets can be purchased online at slspromotions.ticketforce.com or by calling SLS Promotions at 815-344-2023.

INCLIMENT WEATHER HALTS RACING AT GRANDVIEW, MASS RAIDS DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL ON JUNE 10TH

BECHTELSVILLE, PA
By ERIKA PALMAI WAGNER
Twenty-Six Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series competitors were eagerly ready to take part in the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series events at Grandview Speedway on Sunday. But with the forecast drastically take a turn for the worse, officials were forced to cancel the ‘Triple Thunder Thriller’ event.

“We were really happy with the number of teams that supported us today, even with threat of rain,” Eddie Wagner, Regional Director of MASS said. “The quality of talent we had in the pits tonight was sure to shape up to be a great night of racing, that’s for sure. I can’t thank the Thunder on the Hill management and officials enough for trying to make a go at it, and for including us in their show tonight.”

Fans, drivers and teams who attended Sunday’s rained out event can use their wristbands for any future Thunder on the Hill event “of equal value or they may pay the additional fee for a show of great value” as per the Thunder on the Hill website. The Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series will be back for a Thunder on the Hill event on October 14th for the ‘Madhouse Halloween Party’.

With Big Diamond Speedway cancelling the June 2nd appearance of the MASS 305 Sprint Cars due to rain outs plaguing their season and special events that they’ve had to continuously postpone, the series will shift their focus on its first ever race at Delaware International Speedway on Saturday, June 10th.

“We are really excited for our first ever appearance at Delaware International,” Wagner stated. “I’ve raced myself at DIS when I ran with URC a few years ago, and I think this track is the perfect place for Sprint Cars. The surface is very racy to where you can use both the top and bottoms of the speedway to your advantage, making the show always exhilarating for the fans and the drivers as well”.

For upcoming details on the next event at Delaware International Speedway and news on what’s happening with the Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series, please visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/midatlanticsprintseries/ or visit our website at www.masprintseries.com.

FREMONT, Ohio – Aliquippa, Pennsylvania’s Tim Shaffer made the long drive from Charlotte, N.C. to Fremont, Ohio Saturday and stole the loot from the drivers in the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST Championship 410 Series presented by Ohio Logistics and the Ohio Sprint Car Series (OSCS). Shaffer had competed with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Friday in North Carolina. The team drove throughout the night to Fremont to compete in the 2nd installment of the “North vs. South” battle in Ohio pitting FAST against the OSCS. Shaffer steadily worked his way through the field from his 12th starting position and blasted under Parker Price Miller to earn his 16th career victory at Fremont Speedway.

“I’ve always loved this place. I hope everyone can get things straightened out and get some All Star shows or Outlaw shows back here. This place is awesome. It races so great…no matter if it’s rough, heavy, slick, tacky what ever. Hats off to Farmer (Rich Farmer, track promoter) for putting this on. They did a great job despite all the rain in the area. Hats off to Cody Jacobs and the Redzik-Demyan team. Cody’s been working his tail off and he’s given us a great car. We’ve been working together and making it nice and I’m grateful to have him. He makes my job a lot of fun again,” said Shaffer of his Rudzik Excavating; Triple X Chassis; VRP Shocks; FK Rod Ends; Scoville Designs backed #49.

Jordan Ryan and Broc Martin brought the field to green for the feature event with Martin gaining the advantage over Cale Thomas, Ryan, Parker Price Miller, FAST point leader D.J. Foos, Lee Jacobs and quick qualifier Adam Kekich. The fast track placed the leaders into heavy lapped traffic by lap eight and that allowed Thomas to take the lead. Martin drove back by to regain the top spot a lap later with Price Miller closing in third. Martin, Thomas and Price Miller put on a clinic in slicing through traffic over the next hand full of laps with Price Miller taking the lead on lap 12.

The first of only two race stoppages came on lap 15 when Ryan Myers took a spill. The restart saw Price Miller continue to lead Martin, Thomas, Ryan, Shaffer and Lee Jacobs. Lapped traffic came back into play at the half way point with Price Miller pulling away slightly over Martin, Thomas, Shaffer and Ryan. Shaffer moved into third on lap 28 as the leaders raced through heavy lapped traffic. Shaffer used the traffic to grab second on lap 33.

The car on the move was 2016 OSCS champion Cole Duncan who had worked his way to fourth from his 16th starting position. However, Duncan’s great run came to a crashing end with three laps to go when he tangled with a lapped car. Shaffer had just executed the winning move exiting on the bottom of turn two to grab the lead. With a clear track on the restart Shaffer pulled away for the victory over Price Miller, Martin, Thomas and Brady Bacon rounding out the top five.

The “Battle for Ohio” will resume Friday, June 2 at Attica Raceway Park as the OSCS teams travel north once again to battle the FAST stars. It will be a double-header weekend for the FAST teams as they also compete Saturday, June 3 at Fremont Speedway.

Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Dominates ASCS Gulf South At The Devil's Bowl

MESQUITE, Texas (May 27, 2017) Sam Hafertepe, Jr. has stated that the Devil's Bowl Speedway is his favorite track, and so far in 2017 the Sunnyvale, Texas racer is perfect at the Mesquite half-mile with Saturday's $3,000 paycheck coming with the Griffith Truck and Equipment ASCS Gulf South Region.

Sam's third win on the year at the Devil's Bowl, and seventh overall in ASCS competition, the Hwy. 79 Collision/J&J Auto Racing No. 15h shot straight to the lead from the fourth starting spot to pace all 25 laps for his 11th career ASCS Gulf South score.

Just off his first ASCS victory of the season one night ago, Ray Allen Kulhanek kept his momentum going with a runner-up finish while Washington's Seth Bergman came up to finish third. Switching cars after Friday night, Johnny Herrera wheeled to a fourth place finish after starting 12th with John Carney II placing fifth.

Matt Covington sixth was followed by Sammy Swindell in seventh from 16th. Channin Tankersley, Harli White, and 17th starting Blake Hahn completed the top-ten.
