Dixon Tops IndyCar Day 1 Practice

Scott Dixon was fastest Tuesday at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the first IndyCar test session of the week. His lap of 211.372 mph was just seven-hundredths of a second faster than Ryan Briscoe’s top speed of 210.793 mph. Dario Franchitti didn’t require long to get re-acclimated to an Indy car. He was third-fastest at 210.603 mph on the 1.5-mile banked oval. Dixon is the defending IndyCar Series champion.

Rounding out the top 10 were Mario Moraes, Will Power, Marco Andretti, rookie Robert Doornbos, Briscoe in a second car, Tony Kanaan, and Graham Rahal. Danica Patrick was 11th-fastest.

In all, 21 cars participated in the test, turning nearly 2,100 laps combined.

Testing resumes on Wednesday from 4:00pm to 10:00pm ET.

1959

Jerry Unser... Died ... He was the 1957 USAC Stock Car champion. Jerry was the first of the Unser family to compete at Indianapolis. He died in a practice crash before the 1959 Indianapolis 500, leaving behind a widow, Jeanne Unser, and two sons, Jerry and Johnny Unser. His brothers Al and Bobby and his nephew Al Jr. have won the "500". His son Johnny and nephew Robby have also competed in the race. ____________________

1964

Jimmy Davies won the USAC Midget race at the 25th Street Fairgrounds, Columbus, IN.

Nolan Johncock won the Super Modified race over Harry Jones at the Dixie Motor Speedway, Birch Run, MI. ____________________

1970

Gary Bettenhausen won the USAC Sprint Car race over Johnny Parsons, Larry Dickson, Sammy Sessions and Bill Puterbaugh at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, Indianapolis, IN. ____________________

1980

Sammy Swindell won the World of Outlaws Sprint Car race over Jim Edwards, Jay Myers, Smokey Snellbaker and Bobby Allen at the Lincoln Speedway, Hanover, PA. ____________________

1996

Scott Brayton ... Died ... USAC/CART driver 1981 to 1996. Scott tragically lost his life in a fatal crash during practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Six days before the accident, Scott captured his second consecutive Indy 500 pole position.
