By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media

Losing a show to Mother Nature has always made it extremely tough for the speedway promoters as they have to scramble in hopes of completing their racing season on a solid and positive note. The Pocono Mountains were awash on Labor Day and created a plethora of events for the Smith Family to complete at their 1/5th mile clay cushioned oval on the final day of the racing season Saturday night. The quick change in the weather pattern also brought out the change in garments for the racing fans but the sizzling racing action that took place out on the speedway channels between the drivers produced heat and sizzle that kept the fans warm and excited until the final checkered flag fell on the season. The heart-stopping side by side action highlighted a great evening of racing that found the speedway hosting nine feature events were completed at 11 PM. The evening of speed was presented by S&S Speedways Indoor Go Karts located in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and JPA Masonry located in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania.

The racing action produced some familiar names on the Hamlin scene with the cream of the crop rising to the occasion to land in the coveted Victory Circle while some new winners did emerge during the evening. "The Connecticut Cruiser" Josh Marcus had the field covered as he led all but one lap to record his second win of the season in the held-over All Star Slingshot event. "The Angle" Cole Stangle wired the field in the Hampton RV and Trailer Stage One Modified thirty lap feature to win the annual Roy Smith Memorial event. Two JPA Masonry Rookie 600 Sprint events were offered and "The Whiz Kid" Jack Hanna after only a couple of starts found himself in victory lane for his first ever win at the speedway. "The Ry-Guy" Ryan Stangle is another first year performer who has excelled and he went topside to win his second feature of the season. "The Electric Man" Colin White was full throttle as he used all of the Hamlin Speedway real estate in a show stopping run for the roses to claim his third win of the season in the JPA Masonry 600 Sprints. Tyler Banks only led one lap but it was the final one as he raced to his third win of the season in the Junior Slingshot main event. "The Oxford Express" Dale Kober utilized his right foot from the start and wired the field for his ninth win in the Super Slinger finale. "The Fearless One" Kyle Ferrucci found himself alone in the zone as he captured his fifth win of the season in the Wingless 270 Sprint finale. In the 50-lap National Tour event for the All star Slingshots, Scott Neary inherited the lead when race leader Jared Silfee tangled with a slower car and led the final laps to score the biggest win of his young career to capture the $1,000.00 prize offered for the win.

Tess Horvath and CJ Fritz brought the 17-car All Star Slingshot field down for the start of their held-over twenty lap feature encounter. Horvath led one lap before she and Fritz tangled, sending both cars to the rear. On the restart, Josh Marcus bolted into the lead and would lead the rest of the way in a great run for the budding star as he picked up his second win of the season. Mike Taylor was a strong second with Cole Stangle third, Taylor Mills fourth and Cody Kline completing the top five. The second five consisted of Austin Silfee, Amanda Buchel, Wes Hearn and Tyler Peet. Sixteen of the seventeen starters completed all laps of the main event.

Glenn Macomber led the first five laps of the Wingless 270 Sprint main until yielding to Kyle Ferrucci. Ferrucci was a rocket once out front as he found the Hamlin Speedway surface superb and led the rest of the way lap to capture his fifth win of the season. Glenn Macomber would finish second with Alex Reinsmith nailing down third.

Cody Smith seized the moment at the drop of the green flag and glued himself to the top reaches of the speedway to grab the lead for the first two laps until Adam Huff would get sideways down the backstretch and execute a heart stopping flip. Huff was uninjured in the incident. On the restart Colin White made everyone aware he meant business as he went to the far reaches of the speedway to climb into the lead from his sixth place start. Joel Smith, Mack Brink and Cody Smith kept pace as the racers hit their stride. Mick D'Agostino would race from tenth to fifth and Danny Buccafusca after dropping back a few notches was coming on like gangbusters. This would be a night for Colin White as he raced to his third win of the season, with Joel Smith, Cody Smith, Mack Brink and Mick D'Agostino completing the top five. Buccafusca would finish sixth with Paul Richards Jr, Chad Sandt, Ryan Neil and Damon Paul rounding out the top ten.

Abby Yates brought "the stars of tomorrow" starting field to the line for their 20-lap main headliner. Yates was quick and had no problems in driving away from the field after a couple of restarts. Cruising along, Yates caught the back end of the field and while being cautious allowed second place man John Kendall to close in on her. Going into turn three of the final lap had Kendall trying to slip underneath Yates but a slower car caused the pair to connect and have Tyler Banks inherit the lead. The final lap belonged to Banks as he scored his third win of the season at Hamlin. Adam Buchel kept up his steady performances at the speedway with a runner-up finish while Shelby McLaughlin was third, Kyle Swart fourth and Tommy Stillo rounding out the top five. James Hendricks, Jake Mason, Joey Kalafut, John Kendall and Abby Yates completed the top ten.

Two JPA Masonry Rookie 600 Sprint features were needed for the growing roster at the speedway. In the first one, Jack Hanna took the early lead and had no problems in separating himself from the field. Hanna was flawless in a wire to wire triumph for his first win at Hamlin. Zack Weisenfluh was the runner-up with Ryan Lacoe, Alex Reinsmith, Aidan Borden and Dennis Chamberlain completing the field.

In the second Rookie 600 Sprint main event, Carmen Leggio led the first eleven laps until a run to the top of the speedway for Ryan Stangle found him exiting the turn with the lead. Stangle would go and capture his second win of the season with Paul Richards Jr, Carmen Leggio, Noah Zielinski and Joey Amantea completing the top five. Savannah Leggio, Tony Parlanti, Cody Powell and Mike Traver would complete the field.

The Super Slingers finale found Dale Kober taking off in the lead from his pole start. Kober would drive away from the field at will early on but a skirmish would slow the action. On the restart, Kober would remain in command and would go and record his ninth win of the season. Wes Hearn was second with Mike Taylor third, Jim Conroy fourth and Greg Zellman, Roger Collins and Jeff Haduck following.

The Hampton RV and Trailer Sales Stage One Modified shootout with the running of the annual Roy Smith Memorial, found Cole Stangle hustling into the lead at the drop of the green flag. Stangle quickly found the zone and was clicking off 13 second laps as he drove away from the field. Stangle was unstoppable as he led every lap and picked up the win and much sponsorship money for his efforts. Joel Smith was second with Joel Price third, John Comandini fourth and Cody Motto nailing down fifth. John Mirabelli, Michael Samony, Anthony Recchio, newcomer "Chops" Anthony Chrobak and Evan Civick completing the field.

The final event of the season came down to the National All Star Slingshot 50-lap finale with $1,000.00 on the line. Jared Silfee grabbed the lead at the start and was comfortable out front with most of the action taking place behind him. The fight for position was fantastic as no dimes were given and none were taken. The real estate was tough as the bidders were going full bore in an attempt to gain an advantage. Lap forty one proved to be the waterloo for Silfee as he tangled with a slower car in traffic and got turned around ending his bid for the roses. Scott Neary, driving Silfee's regular mount, inherited the lead and would lead the final laps to secure the win, the bragging rights and the gold. Tyler Peet was a solid runner-up with Brett Bieber, Danny Buccafusca in a guest ride and Taylor Mills completing the top five. The second were equally as stout with Cody Kline, Dale Kober, Josh Marcus, Wes Hearn and Ashley Kober following. The third five found Samantha Muller, Tanner VanDoren, Mike Taylor, Amanda Buchel and Seth Spayd in order. 22 of the 27 starters completed all fifty laps in a tribute to some great driving efforts.

Pearl Jams:

Even though the weather was breezy to begin the day, it turned very chilly in the evening hours. A great crowd came out to the speedway to witness a tremendous evening of racing activities. The racing surface was impeccable as the track remained racy throughout the evening with side by side, three wide and at times four wide action rocking the house. Promoter Randy Smith and crew worked on the track throughout the evening to give the drivers a great surface with which to ply their trade.

Time trials kicked off the preliminary racing activity for two of the divisions while qualifying heats provided the fans with what were like mini-feature events as the talented drivers dug deep into the Hamlin clay to earn their starting spots for the feature events. Jack Hanna was quick timer for the Rookie 600 Sprints as he timed at 12.387 seconds. Dennis Stawinski was second fast with a 12.748 time. In the Junior Slingshots, Shelby McLaughlin was quick time with a 14.898 time over John Kendall's 15.001 time.

Dale Kober was the heat winner in the Super Slingshots. Alex Reinsmith captured the lone heat win for the 270 Sprints. Wingless 600 Sprint heats were claimed by Joel Smith, Joseph Smith and Danny Buccafusca. . captured the Rookie 600 Sprint heats. Two rounds of heats were utilized for the Stage One Modifieds with Cole Stangle and Joel Smith victorious in the first round while Cole Stangle and John Mirabelli claimed the wins in round two. Newcomer Zack Cox had the misfortune of getting upside down in his heat and withdrew from competition for the evening. The All Star Slingshot also ran two rounds of heats with Amanda Buchel, Ashley Kober, Scott Neary and Seth Spayd winning the first round while the second round found Taylor Mills, Cody Kline, Josh Marcus and Tyler Peet in for the wins.

New faces made visits to the speedway and All Star Slingshot drivers who didn't make it into the feature included Rachel Dickinson, Henry Anderson, Tanner Jones, Nick Delcampo, Troy Langendoerfer, Austin Homan, CJ Fritz, Emily Fleming, Clayton Davey and Ryan Conrad. Tim Bauer was back in action in the 600 Sprints along with Doug Snyder and Carmen Leggio Jr. Brandon Nicholas, Mike Traver and Rich Maguire were among the recent additions to the Rookie 600 Sprints. Zack Cox got upside down in the Stage One Modified in his debut. Also joining the field was USAC Quarter Midget Champion "Chops" Anthony Chrobak as he tried the Smith Fabrications Rental Car on for size. He did a great job for his first ride in a bigger car as he seeks to transition into another division after having a very successful career in the Quarter Midgets.

Close to $500.00 was raised in a couple of days for lap sponsorship of the Roy Smith Memorial event. The Hamlin Speedway and Staff and Smith Fabrications would like to thank JPA Masonry, Buchel Motorsports/Florida Keys Air Conditioning, Amy Renee Hanna, MRS Racing, Tom Motto Racing, Ed Stangle Landscaping, Hampton RV and Trailer Sales, Accord Speedway, APS Powdercoating Services, Upstate Auto, Floor Excellence, Diane Stewart, TVD Racing, J&E Motorsports and GA Motorsports Media for their great support of this annual event. Cole Stangle earned the most lap money while also securing the Winner's Bonus posted by JPA Masonry. Mark Connelly and Zack Cox were awarded with the Hard Luck drivers and John Comandini was the Hard Charger for the event.

This ends the 2017 season at the Hamlin Speedway for the seven regular divisions although next week will find the X-Treme Dirt Series coming to the speedway for their next leg of racing in their series of events. If you have never seen the Quads in action, now would be a good time to come out and see the many divisions traverse the Hamlin course. More information regarding the event will be posted on the website.

Joey Amantea recently enjoyed his 13th birthday.
