Joey Saldana Scores Win in Battle at Jacksonville Speedway
Scores his third World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - May 4, 2016 - The road to Joey Saldana's third World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory of the season was not an easy one, but Saldana did what he had to, overcoming fierce challenges and near misses Wednesday night at Jacksonville Speedway.
"It was one thing I learned here tonight - if you do get into trouble, just be patient with the bottom," Saldana said. "Just stick with it. So I just tried to do a better job than what I've been doing in the past and it paid off tonight."
Saldana, who started from the pole after a Dash inversion of eight put him in position, lost the lead in the feature on lap eight to Aaron Reutzel and slipped back to third. He battled back around Shane Stewart and then Reutzel to regain the lead ten laps later and avoided getting tangled in the various cautions and red flags.
Saldana said the win is a big boost for his No. 83 Roth Motorsports team on a challenging short track following struggles in California through the last two months.
"Luckily Dennis and Teresa (Roth) were patient with us and with me and we've definitely turned it around here because this is a true short track," Saldana said. "We did everything right tonight and I can't thank everyone at Roth enough for what they do for us - giving the opportunity to compete at this level."
Saldana joins Christopher Bell as the only two winners of a World of Outlaws event at Jacksonville.
Logan Schuchart kicked off the night's action after taking the qualifying quick time with a lap of 10.805 over 45 other entered cars - the largest field of the season, so far.
Saldana and Reutzel led the field to the green flag on the tight, 1/4 mile bullring. Saldana jumped out to the early lead through the first three laps until a caution flag flew. Back to green, Reutzel needed just four laps and a slip up from Saldana as he exited turn four to take over the lead.
Stewart followed up Reutzel and threw a slider on Saldana as the two drivers worked their way through turns three and four to take over the second position on lap 10. The move for Stewart was short-lived though as Saldana used a lapped car as a pick and got back around Stewart's No. 2 Eneos/Larson Marks machine.
"I went from first to third. I just had to be real patient on the bottom," Saldana said. "It was easy to miss it, so I just started running on the bottom, patient with that. And then just run the top in open track. I figured if I hit my marks it was going to be tough for them to get by me."
With Reutzel back in Saldana's sights, he began to close back on the lead. Just short of halfway, Saldana made his move, getting around Reutzel to retake the lead as the two drivers drove off of turn four. The next lap by, Stewart got around Reutzel for second.
With traffic in play, the leaders stayed close to each other, with Stewart looking for a line around Saldana.
Back in the field, Brad Sweet, who started in fifth and Donny Schatz, who started in 16th and would go on to take the night's KSE Racing Hard Charger Award, were moving forward. Sweet was in fourth and Schatz was picking off his opponents, moving into third by lap 26.
As the battle intensified up front, multiple cautions and a red flag changed the complexion of the night as it tightened the field back up and forced Saldana to go on defense.
One final caution came out with three laps remaining as Sheldon Haudenschild spun in front of the leaders - all were able to avoid the No. 93 car.
On the final restart, Saldana jumped out to a safe lead as Stewart and Sweet battled for the second position with Schatz just behind. Ultimately, it was Stewart who took the position. Sweet finished in third in his No. 49 Razorback Professional tools car and Schatz fourth.
"Brad kind of snookered me there on that one restart and got by me," Stewart said. "I felt like I had five or six bad laps there and I felt like if I could have done that differently, the outcome may have been a little different. Once you get out front your car acts so different. Joey had a great car so congrats to him and his team."
Stewart, who sits in second in the championship standings has been the picture of consistency throughout the season. He has two wins, including seven podium finishes, as well as 13 top-five finishes and 20 top-10 finishes.
Sweet, the current championship points leader, picked up his 12th podium finish of the season, the most of any driver. Tonight, Sweet said, was all about finding the right line.
"You're always searching for grip and the right line and they're hard to win because of that," Sweet said. "There's always someone behind you searching for the right line. We had a good car. We had a car capable of winning, I just didn't do a good job on that last restart and let Shane get back by me. We'll take a top three out of here. There's a lot of cars here, a lot of competition, a lot of mayhem and that's short track racing at its finest."
Saldana's win tonight was his 97th career World of Outlaws victory. That mark, which places him sixth on the all-time wins list, puts him just 10 wins short of Doug Wolfgang, who sits fifth with 107 wins.
"I'm just thankful to be here and now we're off to one of my favorite tracks," Saldana said. "Hopefully we can carry this momentum into Eldora."

Daryn Pittman Perseveres to Score Perris Win
Joey Saldana finishes third with pass on last turn of last lap
PERRIS, Calif. - April 16, 2016 - Daryn Pittman dominated Saturday night's SoCal Showdown at Perris Auto Speedway to claim his second World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory of the season. The win came one night after a crash ended his night while he led at Bakersfield Speedway.
"Last night was dumb," Pittman said of his Bakersfield Speedway run. "I ran over Joey [Saldana] and took ourselves out of contention for a win there and tore up a lot of equipment."
Pittman, who claimed his first ever series win at Perris, said perseverance is the motto of his No. 9 Great Clips team.
"This car has been so fast and we're right there in the hunt every night," Pittman said. "We've just got to put it together and that starts with me.
"This track has been really good to me and I got my very first Outlaw win here beating Steve Kinser to the line by I don't know how close - it was really close. It's one I'll never forget so I always enjoy coming here."
Pittman, who led the feature flag-to-flag, had to contend much of the night with traffic and perhaps more pressing, his Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb teammate Brad Sweet behind him.
The all KKR front row, was in charge early, as Pittman took the lead on the first lap. As he worked his way through lappd traffic, he built up an impressive multi-second lead over Sweet and Shane Stewart.
Sweet held firm in second as Stewart worked to close the gap on the second place position. The two were within a car length of each other much of the night.
With one lap to go, Pittman made contact with Paul McMahan that sent McMahan spinning. The caution flag waved. Pittman later apologized to McMahan in victory lane.
The reset field, with a green-white-checkered finish ahead, looked for one last chance to make a move.
Stewart, looking for the second position, made a bold charge on Sweet through one and two but was not able to get around the No. 49 Razorback Professional Tools car. The move opened the door for fourth-place running Saldana to close the gap with his No. 83 Roth Motorsports car.
"I think Brad had his tires going down a little and Shane had a good racecar so he was trying really hard to get by him and he just used his tires up there or had his tires going down there and missed the rubber going into three," Saldana said. "That was the only shot I had so I went for it and luckily we were on the front straightaway."
Saldana completed the pass on the final lap coming off of turn four.
Pittman claimed his second series win of the season - the first driver not named Schatz or Pittman to score a repeat win - and Sweet picked up his tenth podium finish of the season.
"We're running up front every night and it's just a good team effort," Sweet said. "We've got momentum on our side and a little bit of luck here and there but the car has been really fast… We're happy for Daryn and his team. It's a KKR 1-2. You can't beat that."

Captures win one year after serious accident at same event
PLACERVILLE, Calif. March 23, 2016... After being involved in a horrible accident during this event last year that sidelined him for the season, Jason Johnson returned to Placerville Speedway for the 2nd Annual Brad Sweet presents the Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown presented by Riebes Auto Parts and captured his first victory since Texas Motor Speedway in 2003.
Daryn Pittman, who was also injured in the same event last year, finished second to Johnson, as both drivers overcame their troubles from a year ago for podium finishes.
We have a tremendously strong team right now, and things are clicking, and when they are clicking it is fun, Johnson said. Daryn [Pittman] and I were standing there in the dash and I was like man I would be happy just walking out of here tonight and then we finish one and two.
This was a place I really wanted to redeem myself. Its really cool we are able to come to a small track like this and be able to race and I really got to thank Brad Sweet and thank all the fans for coming out, its been a great night.
Johnson, a Eunice, La. native, showed speed early in the night, clocking in with the second fastest time, just behind quick-time recipient Sean Becker, who is a native of Chico, Calif.
Johnson then piloted his Priority Aviation/Masilla Valley Transportation No. 41 to a victory in his heat, defeating Auburn, Calif. driver Andy Forsberg, which qualified him for the dash.
Coming short of sweeping all the races during the night, Johnson finished fourth in the dash, as Pittman, in the Great Clips/Sage Fruit No. 9, captured the victory in the 8-lap race after he overtook Forsberg on the opening lap.
Pittman, starting in the first position, lost the top spot once the green flag fell, to second place starter Forsberg, who regained the position Pittman took from him in the dash on the opening lap.
Johnson charged from his fourth starting position early, quickly making his way to the second position just behind Forsberg, after he passed Pittman on lap four.
Johnson reeled in Forsberg and started battling with the driver of the PitStopUSA/Autism Awareness No. 7C. The back-and-forth duel for the top position lasted 10 laps, with Johnson finally overtaking Forsberg on lap 14.
As the leaders hit slower lapped traffic, Johnson padded his lead on the rest of the field, but a caution near the halfway point brought both Forsberg and Pittman to his rear bumper.
On the ensuing restart, Johnson pulled away again as Forsberg lost a position to both Pittman and race promoter Sweet, who cracked the top three for the first time all night.
Sweets time in the top three was short lived as another local California driver, Kyle Hirst from Paradise, Calif., rocketed from his 10th starting position to the top three with less than 15 laps remaining.
Much like Sweet, Hirsts time in the top three was short lived as he blew a tire causing a late race restart with only five laps remaining.
Unfortunately, the caution for Hirst was not the final caution of the night.
Just before the leaders took the white flag, Joey Saldana brought out the final caution, setting up a green-white-checkered finish between Johnson, Pittman and Sweet, who had reclaimed his podium position.
On the final restart, Sweet slipped off the track allowing Forsberg around him for the third position.
At the front, Pittman could not muscle his way around Johnson, who proved to be too fast for the rest of the field as he dominated the majority of the race, leading 26 laps en route to claiming the victory at Placerville.
I had no clue [how fast we were], Johnson said. But I knew if we were racing with Andy [Forsberg] then we were pretty good, because I watch a lot of video, and Andys pretty good at this type of racing.
Its all about pacing yourself. You watch Donny Schatz pace himself, his fastest laps come at the end of the race so at the beginning of the race I paced myself and shopped around, then I got the and tried not to make mistakes.
Pittman recorded his second runner-up finish in-a-row, finishing second to Donny Schatz on the final night at Stockton Dirt Track on Saturday before finishing second to Johnson tonight.
You couldnt have scripted a better finish than that one tonight, Pittman said. Starting on the pole you want to win but for [Jason Johnson] to come back and win and me to finish second...It was a lot of fun to come back to a racetrack that we both had a bad night, and both got hurt, and come back and run strong.
Our goals werent too high coming in here tonight. My goal was to see more of the track than I did from the Placerville hospital, so luckily we achieved that and finished second. But congrats to Jason [Johnson], he has definitely been fast this year. He has probably been the most improved and theyre in the hunt every night, so it was a great win for that team, and a good run for us.
Forsberg brought home a third place finish after being one of the fastest cars all night and contending for the victory early in the feature.
We were all working today until about noon so we were able to come out here today and run with the Outlaws these guys are pros, Forsberg said. Am I a little disappointed I didnt win? Of course...Weve been here twice and been in contention twice, so I dont know what else to say, other than I am happy to be in third place.
It sure broke my heart to see Brad [Sweet] drive off the track and let me by him, it was definitely nice of him.
