Gravel Perfect at Knoxville
Earns Pole for Saturday's 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals Finale
KNOXVILLE, IA - August 10, 2017 - David Gravel became the seventh different driver, and first in 25 years, in the 57-year history of the 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals, to complete a perfect score by setting quick time, winning his heat race and winning the feature. Gravel's perfect night will earn him the pole of Saturday's $150,000 to-win Feature alongside nine-time Knoxville Nationals Champion, Donny Schatz.
A first lap incident saw Dominic Scelzi and defending 5-Hour ENERGY Nationals Winner Jason Johnson get together, ultimately ending the latter's evening.
"I don't know exactly what happened, I stepped on the throttle and the car got way loose on me," Johnson said following the evening. "We're going to have to go to work tomorrow. It's obviously not the position we want to be in, but we're thankful for the way format is now to get to run tomorrow."
The melee moved Gravel from his original eighth starting position up a row to sixth. Gravel rocketed off the top of turn two and was third by the completion of the opening circuit. Gravel worked his way to second before a caution for then third place running Brooke Tatnell on lap 10 bunched the field together.
Brian Brown, who fell as far back as seventh, restarted third and passed Gravel for the runner-up position, allowing race-long leader Mark Dobmeier to extend his lead. Gravel found moisture on the bottom of the speedway, passed Brown back and set his sights on the leader. Dobmeier stumbled a bit in lapped traffic and Gravel pounced and took the lead on lap 18 and never looked back. "Clean air is so important these days. It's better to be running second in lapped traffic," Gravel said about his pass for the race lead.
Gravel drove away and completed the perfect night by winning by 3.413 seconds. The perfect score for David Gravel was the first recorded since Steve Kinser did so in 1992, coincidentally the same year Gravel was born. "It's surreal. We're going to enjoy try and enjoy this tonight and end up with a solid finish Saturday," a modest Gravel said in regard to his perfect evening.
Brown settled for second after an adventurous evening that saw him get crossed up on a couple of starts. "After being in the C-main here last year, I had some newfound respect for this place. I am thrilled to start fifth in the feature this year," Brown said following his evening.
Following the qualifying nights, World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series drivers own the top three in points with Gravel, Donny Schatz and Brad Sweet. Daryn Pittman (7th), Shane Stewart (10th) and Paul McMahan (12th) are also locked into Saturday's 50-lap finale.
Jason Sides will start third in the Last Chance Showdown on Saturday, while the rest of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series drivers will re-qualify on Friday night to determine their fate for Saturday's program.

Kyle Larson Continues Dominance on Dirt; Scores Preliminary Win at 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals
Schatz, Sweet atop Wednesday point totals
KNOXVILLE, IA - August 9, 2017 - Kyle Larson continued his dominance in the racing world, convincingly winning the opening night of the 57th Annual 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey's General Store. Nine-time Nationals champion and current World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series points leader, Donny Schatz finished second, but ended the night as the high point man and will be in prime starting position come Saturday night.
Kyle Larson's third career Knoxville Raceway win leaves the dirt racing world waiting for the results of a phone call with his NASCAR car owner, Chip Ganassi. Larson, who currently sits third in the Monster Energy NASCAR point standings, has a contract built in that he cannot race the day before a NASCAR event. The Knoxville Nationals finale is Saturday, with NASCAR racing at Michigan the following day.
"I hope he understands how big this event is to me. I think I know what his answer will be," Larson said about his upcoming phone call.
As for the race, Larson started on the pole and won it with a masterful drive through lapped traffic. Knoxville regular Austin McCarl got a good start and led the field down the backstretch before giving way to Larson shortly after. "I could run the bottom decent and once I got up top, I felt like I had a lot of speed," Larson said.
Pennsylvania Posse member, Greg Hodnett, closed in on McCarl for the runner-up position but was overtaken by Schatz before he could do so. Schatz got by McCarl with ease and set his eyes on the California driver as the two raced through lapped traffic. Schatz never closed in enough to make a serious attempt for the lead. "Kyle did a phenomenal job. He moved around when he needed to. We had a very decent night," Schatz said in the post-race press conference. Hodnett settled for third.
Brad Sweet was strong all night and ended the night second in points, "You have to put yourself in position and I think we did a great job of that all night. Coming to the biggest race of the year, we had high expectations. There's still room for improvement, but I feel like we are really close right now."
World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series drivers Shane Stewart and Paul McMahan sit sixth and eighth in points, respectively. Sheldon Haudenschild battled motor woes in the Last Chance Showdown, as did Logan Schuchart, who scratched for the evening following hot laps.
The action continues at the Knoxville Raceway Thursday for Night Two of the 57th Annual 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals. Defending Nationals champion, Jason Johnson, and 12-time feature winner with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series this season, David Gravel, headline the field. 2016 Knoxville Nationals polesitter Daryn Pittman and 2005 Nationals winner Kraig Kinser will be in action along with Jacob Allen, Greg Wilson, Brent Marks, Clyde Knipp and Jason Sides from the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.

Pittman Scores First Win of 2017 at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55
PEVELY, MO - August 5, 2017 - It's been a long time coming for Daryn Pittman, who secured his first win of the season Friday night at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55. The 2014 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Champion has had a trying season by his standards. Friday night, he was able to fend off the eight-time and defending Series Champion Donny Schatz, including on a late-race restart with six laps to go.
"Man, I needed that. I think this team needed that," a relieved Daryn Pittman said upon exiting his Great Clips No. 9 for his first win of the 2017 season Friday night at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.
The Craftsman Club Dash draw was four putting Sheldon Haudenschild and Paul McMahan on the front row. Haudenschild and McMahan led laps in the dash before giving way to Pittman on the third circuit.
"I'm blessed to be able to drive for Kasey [Kahne]," Pittman said in Victory Lane. "I was on the phone with him all night. He worked on this thing during the week and put in a setup that I would have bet everything in the world would not have worked," Pittman said with a smile. "Thanks to DIRTVision.com for the great coverage so he could watch up in New York."
Although Pittman led all 35 laps it was far from an easy victory. Donny Schatz stalked the Owasso, Oklahoma-native for the majority of the race.
"You get nervous when you're leading, even when it is hard to pass, when that No. 15 car is behind you. He has stolen more than one rubber race away from me pretty late," Pittman said of the eight-time series champion, Schatz.
Schatz took a peak to the outside of the Kasey Kahne Racing No. 9 momentarily in turn three, "You got to try something if given the opportunity," the current Series point leader said." All around it's a decent finish. We haven't been in the top three here in a little bit, so I'm glad to get to a good finish."
Sheldon Haudenschild came home third, in what was his Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 debut. "I'm happy. I feel like we haven't been on the podium since California," Haudenschild said jokingly. Although it was Sheldon's first visit to Pevely, his crew chief Bonzai and father, Jac, have many laps around the bullring. "Having Bonzai on our team for these tracks I've never been to has been huge," Sheldon, the leading contender for Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, reiterated.
Kraig Kinser and Brad Sweet completed the top five. The first twelve drivers across the finish line were World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series regulars, with last year's Ironman 55 winner, Rico Abreu, finishing 13th. Brandon Hanks was the KSE Hard Charger coming from 23rd to 16th aboard his No. 84 machine.
