MAURIELLO BREAKS WALL STADIUM DROUGHT WITH MODIFIED WIN SATURDAY

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. September 24, 2016- Eric Mauriello put all of his bad fortunes of the 2016 season behind him Saturday night and won the 40-lap Downs Ford Modified stock car main event at Wall Stadium Speedway. The “Snap On Night” win was the Howell resident’s first victory of the season.

Mauriello took full advantage of the front row starting spot, earned in the handicapping system by his streak of poor fortunes, to rocket to the lead at the outset. He was first forced to fight off the advances of Derek Hopkinson before the Toms River race was forced to pit on lap 26 with a flat right front tire. Steven Reed of Jackson, the defending champion and point leader, then took up the chase and hounded Mauriello most of the way.

At the checker flag Mauriello was the winner while Reed stretched his point lead slightly by finishing second. Title contender Andrew Krause of Holmdel, who spent much of the race passing cars in the outside lane, finished third and another title contender, Chas Okerson of Freehold, was fourth. New Egypt’s Jason Hearne was fifth.

“It just feels good to get this off my shoulders and win a race,” Mauriello said in the winner’s circle. “This has been a real tough year. We’ve had some good finishes and we’ve had out share of bad luck. It is really nobody’s fault, just racing. I have to thank Dick and Robert Barney for giving me a great car every week and for sticking with it.”

Snap On Sportsman title contender Ricky Collins of Willow Grove, Pa. overcame challenges by Dom Fattarusso of Brick and Jackson’s Blake Barney to cross the finish line first in the 30-lap “Fan Appreciation Night” feature race. Barney was second and Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan was third. Tyler Truex of Mayetta and Nick Shaw wrapped up the top five. Howell’s Kevin Davison, the point leader going into the event, was involved in two skirmishes during the race and was forced to come from the rear of the field twice. The combination of Collins’ crossing the line first and Davison’s eighth place finish puts them in a points knot going into this Saturday’s final point race of the campaign.

As of Sunday the Sportsman finish is not yet official while technical inspectors determine whether or not a motor part in Collins car conforms to rules.

Ron Booth of Eatontown grabbed the lead with ten laps remaining to win the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stock 25-lapper. Booth, who works for Snap On, enjoyed his win in front of his company’s crowd. Brick’s Joe Mongeau all but wrapped up the driving title by finishing second, with early leader Scott Maher of Brick, Union’s Joey Helberg and Gerry Koenig of Seaford, N.Y. completing the top five.

TJ Graves of Wall crossed the finish line first in the Surf Side Collision 4 Cylinder Stock 25-lapper, but when his car had trouble with an unapproved chassis part in post-race inspection Brick’s Ronnie Mullen was awarded the win. Howell’s Brian Osborn, Darren Burdge of Jackson, Brick’s Jason Lane and Jeff Loesch of Neptune City were second through fifth.

Defending champ Robert French of Howell won the 25-lapper for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars grabbing the top spot near halfway. Joe McGrath of Middletown, Edgewater Park’s Nick Van Wickle, Brick’s Chris Gall and Peter Bruno of Little Silver completed the top five.

Shannon Mongeau of Manchester won his second straight 25-lapper for the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models coming from the rear of the field. Freehold’s Howie Conk, Ray Minieri of Bay Shore, N.Y., Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. and point leader Mike Tillett of Bayville were second through fifth.

The Saturday night stock car regular season wraps up this Saturday (Oct. 1) with “Champions’ Night” competition. All feature races will offer double points and champions will be crowned in every division. In competition will be the Modifieds in a 40-lapper, the Sportsman cars in a 30-lapper and the Factory Stocks, Legend Cars, Limited Late Models and the 4 Cylinder Stocks all racing in 25-lappers. INGRAHAM TAKES WALL STADIUM LADIES’ NIGHT MODIFIED WIN

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. September 17, 2016 - Shawna Ingraham was flying Saturday night and appropriately won the Downs Ford Modified stock car 40-lap main event during “Ladies’ Night” competition at Wall Stadium Speedway. It was the Brick resident’s second win of the season and the third Modified triumph of her career. She remains the only female to win in Modified competition since the speedway opened in 1950.

Ingraham wrestled Shaun Carrig of Little Falls at the opening green flag of the event before stretching a lead through the first 18 laps of the race. Four-time champion Chas Okerson of Freehold then challenged her on a restart and remained within striking distance before Anthony Sesely of Matawan advanced to second with ten laps remaining. Sesely tried to race into the lead on a restart but drifted high in turn two with point leader Steven Reed of Jackson and Okerson getting by for second and third.

Okerson was then able to get by Reed for second and chased Ingraham to the finish line. Sesely and Andrew Krause of Holmdel, who was forced to pit to change a flat tire earlier in the race, wrapped up the top five.

“I felt I couldn’t do the same thing on every restart so I tried to mix it up to keep them off guard,” Ingraham said of her restart strategy. “The car was very fast tonight and was handling well. That allowed me to change things up and stay out front.”

Howell’s Jimmy Blewett came from deep in the 19-car field to win the companion 30-lapper for the Snap On Sportsman cars. Dom Fattarusso of Brick led the first 17 laps before he and Blake Barney of Jackson touched on the front stretch with Barney taking the lead. Blewett was soon second and took over the lead with a diving pass in turn two on the 25th lap.

Blewett then fought off Tyler Truex of Mayetta on a late race restart before taking the win. Barney, Fattarusso and point leader Kevin Davison of Howell completed the top five.

The Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars battled in a pair of 25-lappers with “invaders” taking a win in each. In the first race Mike Alcaro of West Milford was tops over a top five of Joe McGrath of Middletown, Howell’s Robert French and Richie Davidowitz and Kevin Nowak, both of Medford, N.Y.

Davidowitz came back to win the nightcap while Nowak, Alcaro, French and point leader Louie Keraitis of Toms River wrapped up the top five.

Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg took the lead on lap 17 and went on to win a non-stop 25 lapper for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks. Eatontown’s Ron Booth was providing the pressure in the closing laps with point leader Joe Mongeau of Brick, early leader Tim O’Shea of Wall and Manchester’s Scott Riggleman rounding out the top five.

Shanon Mongeau of Manchester hitched a ride in the Cole Ormsbee No. 19 and came from behind to win the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Model 25-lapper. Early leader Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., Freehold’s Howie Conk, Bill Vanderveen of Beachwood and Bayville’s Mike Tillett were second through fifth.

Geoffrey Sutton of Easton, Pa. won the 25-lapper for the visiting TQ Midgets while Gabrielle Olender of Sayreville won her first ever race for the Sunday Series Champ Karts.

Stock car racing continues this Saturday night (Sept. 24) with “Fan Appreciation Night” action which features a late afternoon “On Track Party” where fans are welcome to walk the speedway, check out all the racecars and visit with the drivers starting at 4:30 p.m. In competition will be the Modifieds in a 40-lapper, the Sportsman cars in a 30-lapper and the Factory Stocks, Legend Cars, Limited Late Models and the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks all racing in 25-lappers. WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. September 3, 2016 – With a majority of those on the speedway grounds keeping an eye on the weather due to the impending forecast of a tropical storm Andrew Krause of Holmdel and Derek Hopkinson of Toms River kept their eyes on the track to win Downs Ford Modified main events on Saturday night at Wall Stadium Speedway. Krause’s win was his third of the campaign while Hopkinson won his first main event of the year.

In the first Modified 40-lapper, rain postponed from July 30, Brick’s Ron Frees jumped to the lead at the outset with Krause soon riding his bumper. On lap five Krause dove to the inside lane on the backstretch, took the lead and was never headed.

In a race that was slowed only once for a spin on lap 27 by Toms River’s Jonathan Mandato, Krause stretched an advantage at times with Frees behind him all the way. Shaun Carrig of Little Falls was third with defending champion Steven Reed of Jackson, who passed several cars during the race, fourth. Kenny Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. was fifth.

“We’ve had our share of trouble so this win feels real good,” Krause said referring to a motor problem that knocked him from winning contention one week earlier. My family, my friends and my sponsors never let me down.”

The regularly scheduled Modified 40-lapper went non-stop with Hopkinson leading all the way. Matlach chased him before settling for second with multi-time champ Chas Okerson finishing third. Reed, riding in the outside lane, wrestled with Carrig for several laps before nailing down fourth. Carrig was fifth.

“We’ve had a lot of trouble trying to get this car under us so it was real nice when it was almost perfect for this race,” Hopkinson said. “It can be a bit of a workout going 40-laps non-stop but I didn’t want to see a caution to tighten up the pack.”

Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan won his second main event of the year in the companion 30-lapper for the Snap On Sportsman cars. Van Wickle took the lead a third of the way in from eventual runner-up Jarret DiGiantomasso. Kevin Davison of Howell, Jackson’s Blake Barney and Brick’s Robert Sutphin were third through fifth. Ricky Collins of Willow Grove, Pa., the point leader going into the test, was involved in an early wreck and finished 18th.

Defending O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stock champ Joe Mongeau of Brick slipped into the lead on the final stretch to win his second 25-lapper of the year. Early leader Joey Helberg of Union was second followed by Eatontown’s Ron Booth, Gerry Koenig of Seaford, N.Y. and Manchester’s Scott Riggleman.

Point race leader Louie Keraitis of Toms River won his third Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars 25-lapper fighting off defending champion Robert French of Howell in the closing laps. Vinny Troia of Browns Mills, Nick Van Wickle of Edgewater Park and Ron Merlino of Pine Beach wrapped up the top five.

Brick’s Ronnie Mullen raced to his second win of the year in the 25-lapper for the Surf Side Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks. Early leader Jason Lane of Brick was second with Beachwood’s Todd Pilla, Fred Cannock of Port Monmouth and Howell’s Brian Osborn completing the top five.

Stock car racing continues this Saturday night (Sept. 10) with “Pack the Track” night action. Adults will be admitted for just $10 while students aged 7 to 17 are just $5. Children six and under are always free. On the track the Factory Stocks will race in three 25-lap main events and a “Dash for Cash.” The Sportsman cars will compete in a 30-lapper while the 4 Cylinder Stocks and the Legend Cars will battle in 25-lappers. A championship Demolition Derby will also be presented. Grandstand seating opens at 5:00 p.m., qualifying starts at 5:30 p.m. and feature racing begins at 7:00 p.m.

KRAUSE BEATS HEAT TO WIN WALL MODIFIEDS SATURDAY

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. August 13, 2016 - Young veteran stock car driver Andrew Krause beat both the excessive heat provided by the weather and the on the track heat offered by contender Derek Hopkinson of Toms River to win the 40-lapper for the Downs Ford Modifieds at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. The Holmdel resident’s second win of the campaign was a turnaround as his chances of winning two big races recently were spoiled by a broken wheel spacer in the “Garden State Classic” and a broken wheel in the “Summer Scorcher.”

Because of his recent bad fortunes Krause started on the front row and took full advantage of the spot. Krause jumped to the lead early but was forced to battle Hopkinson every step of the way. A handful of cautions for minor incidents forced many double file restarts during the first half of the event with Krause and Hopkinson spending most of their time wrestling side-by-side around the third mile high banked paved oval.

The second half of the event calmed down as far as yellow flags went but Hopkinson still offered a stiff challenge most of the way. Jason Treat of Jackson posted his best finish of the season with an impressive third while Brick’s Shawna Ingraham recovered from a first lap spin to finish fourth and Willingoboro’s Zack Alspach was fifth.

“It was in the back of mind my all through the second half of the race,” Krause said in victory lane in regards to his recent issues with broken parts. “I just tried not to think about that and focus on the race. Derek was real fast tonight and kept the pressure on. He is a clean driver so I knew he would race clean but hard.

“I want to thank my mom, my dad, my sister and everyone who works on this car. They never give up and that really keeps me going.”

The O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks were also in the spotlight in an extra-distance 50-lap race and defending champion Joe Mongeau of Brick took the win after passing teammate Richie Byrne of Howell. Ryan Flores, Scott Riggleman of Manchester and Scott Maher of Brick were third through fifth.

Former champion Kevin Davison of Howell won the first of two Snap On Sportsman main events. In the early evening 25-lapper, rain postponed from July 30, Davison took the lead on the sixth lap and fought off Tyler Truex of Mayetta and Brick’s Robert Sutphin for the win. Manchester’s Shannon Mongeau and Tuckerton’s Robby Walton wrapped up the top five.

Howell’s Jimmy Blewett won the regularly scheduled Sportsman 30-lapper taking the lead with 20-laps in. Truex was again the runner-up with Matt Langbein of Laurence Harbor, Davison and Jackson’s Blake Barney completing the top five finishers.

Two first time winners were in the spotlight after a pair of 25-lappers for the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks were completed. In the first, rain postponed from July 30, Howell’s Brian Osborn took the victory over Beachwood’s Todd Pilla, Fred Cannock of Port Monmouth, Brick’s Ronnie Mullen and Mike Carr of Wall.

Kyle Scisco of Jackson won the regularly scheduled 4 Cylinder Stock main over Mullen, Osborn, Brick’s Jason Lane and Pilla.

Dalton Rovira won the main event for the visiting Micro Stocks.

Stock car racing continues this Saturday night (August 20) as the speedway presents “Champions’ Night” with many of the track’s past title winners on hand to meet with fans. On the track the Downs Ford Modifieds will battle in a 40-lap main event and the Snap On Sportsman cars will compete in a rain postponed 50-lapper. The Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks will compete in two 25-lappers and the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars will each compete in a 25-lapper. Grandstand seating opens at 5:00 p.m., qualifying starts at 5:45 p.m. and feature racing begins at 7:00 p.m.

The complete updated regular season schedule, which runs on Saturday nights through the end of September, is available at wallspeedwayracing.com as are the rules and regulations for all divisions. Post-season events, the “Spooky Spectacular” in October and the Thanksgiving weekend “Turkey Derby,” are also being planned.

HEARNE TAKES EMOTIONAL MODIFIED WIN AT WALL SATURDAY

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Jason Hearne used power, speed, handling and raw emotion to race to victory in the 40-lap main event for Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Saturday night. The victory on Christmas in July/NAPA Auto Parts Night was the second win of the season for the New Egypt resident who is the son of the speedway’s all-time most winning driver, Gil Hearne (101 wins).

Hearne took advantage of a front row starting spot to jump into the lead early and fought to hold that spot each and every lap. Brick’s Ron Frees was his first challenger before Holmdel’s Andrew Krause moved to second with Chas Okerson of Freehold advancing to third. Only three cautions slowed the test and Krause spent the first half of the event riding the outside lane trying to take the lead while Okerson was on their bumpers in third.

Okerson was finally able to slip into second on the inside lane near the half way mark and Howell’s Eric Mauriello followed him through for third. The tight top four of Hearne, Okerson, Mauriello and Krause then battled all the way to the finish with Ken Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. wrapping up the top five.

“It is incredible to win on the birthday of the greatest racecar driver ever Richie Evans,” an emotional Hearne said in the winner’s circle. “He gave so much to so many but the greatest gift Richie Evans left me personally was Tara Evans Farrell and Richie Evans Jr. Also, I was given a photo of (the late) Jim Willis early tonight. I took the picture of his beautiful smile and sat alone for a while and it brought tears to my eyes. I had two angels riding with me that gave some much to so many and I hope I made them both proud tonight.”

Unlike the Modified race the 30-lapper for the Snap On Sportsman cars suffered with so many incidents that it had to be cut to 20-laps. Larry Thompson of Parlin moved to the front on lap eight and avoided all the trouble to take the win. Mayetta’s Tyler Truex was the runner-up with Jarrett DiGiantomasso, Tuckerton’s Robby Walton and Brick’s Dom Fattarusso completing the top five.

The Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks ran non-stop in their extra-distance 40-lapper with Mike Carr of Wall grabbing his second win of the year. Brian Osborn of Howell chased him most of the way before finishing second with Todd Pilla of Beachwood crossing the line third. Brick’s Ronnie Mullen and Fred Cannock of Port Monmouth were fourth and fifth.

Louie Keraitis of Toms River grabbed the lead on the final lap to win the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars 25-lapper. Defending champ Robert French of Howell was second while Nick Van Wickle of Edgewater, who led most of the way, settled for third. Vinny Troia and Malcolm Campbell were fourth and fifth. WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. July 2, 2016 ~ Four time Downs Ford Modified driving champion Chas Okerson of Freehold held off Howell’s Jimmy Blewett Saturday night at Wall Stadium Speedway to win the Independence weekend 40-lap main event. It was Okerson’s first win of the season and the 17th of his Modified career.

Okerson jumped to the lead early with Chris Reynolds of Howell, Jackson’s Jason Treat and Howell’s Ken Woolley each taking turns early to run second. Meanwhile Blewett was charging from the rear of the field and arrived in the runner-up spot on the 13th circuit.

The final 27 laps of the contest offered a constant fight for the lead. On several occasions cautions for minor incidents slowed the action and lined Okerson and Blewett side-by-side on the front row for the restart. Okerson was able to slip back into the on every one. Woolley crossed the finish line third with Brick’s Shawna Ingraham and Jackson’s Steven Reed completing the top five.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been here,” Okerson said referring to the fact that his last win came in May 2015. “Actually I was happy to see some lapped traffic in the closing laps of the race. I thought that might help me put distance between and Jimmy. I also want to dedicate this win to our family’s Aunt Weezer. She passed away recently and we all really miss her.”

The Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks were in the spotlight in twin 25-lap main events with Mike Carr of Wall taking the win in the first contest in his first ever race in the division. Wall’s TJ Graves, Todd Pilla of Beachwood, Brick’s Jason Lane and Darianne McLaren of Edison wrapped up the top five. Darren Burdge of Jackson won the second 4 Cylinder Stock 25-lapper over Mike Lavery of Orangeburg, N.Y., Pilla, Lane and McLaren.

Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan ended a bad luck streak by winning his first 30-lap Snap On Sportsman main event of the year. Matt Langbein of Laurence Harbor slipped into second in the closing laps with Dom Fattarusso of Brick, Howell’s Kevin Davison and Jarrett DeGiantomasso finishing third through fifth.

Kevin Nowak of Medford, N.Y. won the 25-lap main event for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars beating friend and fellow New Yorker Richie Davidowitz to the finish line. Louie Keraitis of Toms River was third, with Howell’s Robert French and Malcolm Campbell of Eatontown finishing fourth and fifth.

Cole Ormsbee of Wall won his second Elite Maintenance Limited Late Model 25-lapper of the year over Bayville’s Mike Tillett, Beachwood’s Bill Vanderveen, Jackson’s Glen Conk and Michelle Moorman of Beachwood.

Wall Stadium

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. June 25, 2016.. Defending driving champion Steven Reed of Jackson raced to victory in the 55th running of the Garden State Classic for Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. It was his second career win in the Classic race and it earned him $5,000 for finishing the 125 lap distance first.

Reed was in contention for the win for the entire distance as he launched into the top five at the start, advanced to the top three by the ten lap mark and raced into second behind Freehold’s Chas Okerson with 20 laps in the books.

Reed then chased Okerson until a lap 58 caution when he ducked into the pit area to change two tires. Upon returning to the track Reed was easily able to race from the rear of the field back into contention. Then, when many of the top runners pitted for tires on a lap 79 yellow, Reed was able to take over the lead.

The final laps of the race did offer suspense as Matt Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. rode in second and shadowed Reed to the finish. Justin Gumley and Eric Mauriello, both of Howell, were third and fourth while Kenny Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. was fifth.

“We pitted for tires as early as we did because in last year’s Turkey Derby we waited and that really hurt us,” Reed said. “The car was real good and we were just able to ride. I guess reading all those stories about the outside guys coming in for this race also inspired me. It is nice to be the local guy who defends his turf when outsiders come in to race.”

Third generation driver Richie Byrne of Howell led from start to finish to win the non-stop 25 lap main event for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stock cars. It was his career first win. Wall’s Rob Haberstick was the runner-up, while Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg, Brick’s Joe Mongeau and Scott Maher of Brick wrapped up the top five.

Beachwood’s Todd Pilla won the 25-lapper for the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks over Howell’s Brian Osborn, Wall’s T.J. Graves, Christian LaCicero of Lavallette and Jackson’s Blake Barney.

Matt Janisch of Nazareth, Pa. won the 25-lap main event for the touring ATQMRA TQ Midgets.

Stock car racing continues this Saturday night (July 2) as the speedway presents a celebration for the Independence Day holiday weekend.
