BLEWETT WINS TWO MODIFIED RACES AT WALL SATURDAY
Posted by: | CommentsWall Stadium
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. .. Jimmy Blewett of Howell had a Saturday night to remember at Wall Stadium Speedway as he not only topped the Downs Ford Modified 40-lap main event but also won a special 25-lapper for the visiting Dirt Modifieds. Both wins were both hard fought and well earned.
With the starting front rows of the 40-lapper occupied by the faster cars in the field the race was intense from start to finish. Howell’s Ken Woolley led the early laps of the test while Eric Mauriello and Justin Gumley, both of Howell, Jackson’s Steven Reed and Blewett fought for position on his bumper. All five drivers wrestled for position as Woolley fought to hold on to the lead.
Gumley was the first to leave the battle when he spun on lap six and soon after Blewett and Reed advanced to second and third spots. Blewett then picked the outside lane to charge past Woolley and into the lead on lap 15 and then raced on to the win.
Reed crossed the finish line second while Matawan’s Anthony Sesely came from deep in the pack to finish third. Mauriello and Brick’s Shawna Ingraham completed the top five.
“With a lot of the faster cars starting in the front rows this was a fun race,” Blewett said. “Everyone was fast and everyone was doing a good job. The car was just about perfect thanks to Rob Ormsbee. Troyer Race Cars give us a real good car.”
Mike Traver led most of the Dirt Modified 25-lapper as Blewett worked to challenge. Blewett tried several paths into the lead before finally taking the top spot with four laps remaining with an inside lane pass on the backstretch. Rick Coons, Traver, Mark Levy and John Cook rounded out the field.
Shanon Mongeau of Manchester avoided accidents and made critical passes to win the 30-lapper for the Snap On Sportsman cars. Jarret DeGiantomasso was the impressive runner-up, with Matt Langbein of Laurence Harbor, Ricky Collins of Willow Grove, Pa. and Brick’s Dom Fattarusso completing the top five.
Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg crossed the finish line first in the accident filled 25-lapper for the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks, but when his car was found to have non-approved suspension parts in post-race tech defending champ Joe Mongeau of Brick was awarded the win. Manchester’s Scott Riggleman, Gerry Koenig of Seaford, N.Y, Mike Montano and Marco Flores were second through fifth.
Mitchell Dowd of Pottstown, Pa. made his high school graduation weekend complete by winning the 25-lapper for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars. Howell’s Robert French was the runner-up while Browns Mills’ Vinny Troia, who spun in the final turn while trying to steal the lead, recovered quickly to finish third. Ron Merlino of Pine Beach and Malcolm Campbell of Eatontown were fourth and fifth.
Dedicating his win to crewmember “Tommy Boy” who passed away during the off-season, Mike Tillett of Bayville grabbed his first Elite Maintenance Limited Late Model 25-lap win of the year. Brian Doyle of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., Jackson’s Glen Conk, and Michelle Moorman and Bill Vanderveen, both of Beachwood, completed the top five.
The stock cars get the night off on June 18 when the Formula Drift touring series invades Wall Stadium for the annual “Gauntlet” event. Stock car racing then returns on Saturday evening June 25 with the annual running of the “Garden State Classic” for the Modified stock cars. The Factory Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks and the TQ Midgets will also be on the schedule.

HEARNE AND INGRAHAM TOP MODIFIED TWINS AT WALL SATURDAY
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Jason Hearne of New Egypt and Brick’s Shawna Ingraham were main event winners in the Memorial Day weekend Twin 35 lap feature races for the Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Saturday night. Both enjoyed their first win of the 2016 season.
Jason Treat of Jackson was the leader at the outset of the first 35-lapper with Hearne and Jonathan Mandato of Toms River almost instant challengers. Hearne slipped into the lead on lap nine with Mandato and Derek Hopkinson of Toms River close behind. By the time 19 laps were complete Eric Mauriello and Jimmy Blewett, both of Howell, advanced to second and third and the battle for second was on!
This battle boiled over when the duo touched in the third turn on lap 20 with Mauriello spinning as a result. That left Blewett to chase down Hearne but his race ended with three laps to go when his car lost power. Hearne then raced on to the win with Brick’s Ron Frees crossing the finish line second. When it was learned during a post race inspection that Frees raced with a tire that was not in his tire bank. He lost the runner-up spot.
Andrew Krause of Holmdel was then recorded as second while Howell’s Justin Gumley, Ingraham and Chas Okerson of Freehold wrapped up the top five.
“I am so glad for (car-owner) Jim Wolf,” Hearne said after the race. “We’ve had a tough couple of years and really needed this win.”
The second 35-lapper saw Mandato the early leader as defending champ Steven Reed of Freehold soon advanced to second. Reed soon looked for a path to the lead but slowed on the backstretch with a broken flywheel moments later. Mandato then fought off Hopkinson and Ingraham as Blewett, who picked up a ride in the Kenny Matlach No. 34 for the second race, moved into contention.
At halfway Blewett had advanced to second and went after the leader when the duo touched in turn four. Mandato was somehow able to retain control of his sliding car while Blewett left the race with a cut tire. On the restart Ingraham chased the leaders before a lane opened on the inside and she made the winning pass. Mandato was the runner-up with Hopkinson, Matawan’s Anthony Sesely and Trevor Alspach of Willingboro wrapping up the top five.
“A lane opened up on the inside and I just took it,” Ingraham, the only woman to win in the Modifieds here said. “The car was awesome.”
Dom Fattaruso of Brick crossed the finish line first in the companion 30-lapper for the Snap On Sportsman cars but when his car’s rev limiter failed to function during post race inspection he was dropped to fourth place on the finishing order as required by the rules. That moved Brick’s Scott Brannick, who was in winning contention most of the way; to the top spot for his first ever win. Howell’s Kevin Davison and Ricky Collins of Willow Grove, Pa. were second and third. Blake Barney of Jackson was fifth.
Steve West of Howell led almost the entire 25-lap distance to win the O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stock main event. Wall’s Rob Haberstick was second, with Ron Booth of Eatontown, Brick’s Joe Mongeau and Jerry Stanzione of Keansburg completing the top five.
Leslie Harrigan won the Demolition Derby.

KRAUSE GRABS FIRST MODIFIED WIN IN WALL STADIUM OPENER SATURDAY
Posted by: | CommentsWall Stadium
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Andrew Krause of Holmdel had an opening night to remember Saturday at Wall Stadium Speedway as he won his first ever Downs Ford Modified stock car race at the third mile high banked paved oval. Krause, the 2015 Sportsman driving champion here, battled Jackson’s Steven Reed on numerous restarts before taking the win.
At the drop of the green flag Krause and Reed, the defending Modified champion, battled side by side around the oval for a couple of laps before Krause was finally able to slip to the front. Freehold’s Chas Okerson was third while Brick’s Shawna Ingraham and Howell’s Eric Mauriello wrestled their way into fourth and fifth.
“This is just awesome,” Krause said of his initial Modified triumph. “There is nobody better on restarts than Steven (Reed) so it was tough on every one of them. He always runs hard but he runs real clean. I thank him for that.”
