Gravel Defeats Non-Outlaws in Barn Burner at Tri-State Speedway

Holds off challenges from Brady Bacon and Parker Price-Miller for second win of the season

HAUBSTADT, Ind. - May 14, 2016 - David Gravel utilized his speed, and a touch of luck, Saturday night as he clawed his way around pole-sitter Kerry Madsen on the opening lap of the feature, then held off another non-Outlaw, Brady Bacon, in the closing laps to score his second World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory of the season at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.

Gravel controlled the top spot for all 40-laps, but his victory did not come easily, as he had to battle through lapped traffic while also trying to hold off a hard charging Bacon for the win.

"The CJB Motorsports car is obviously pretty good here after Paul [McMahan] won the two years previously, so I had to back that up," Gravel said. "Hopefully, this leads to more wins to come and a great season."

When the checkered flag fell, three non-Outlaws drivers: Bacon, Parker Price-Miller and Kerry Madsen held top-five finishing positions. Series regulars, Gravel, and seven-time series champion Donny Schatz, held the other two spots.

"This place - I guess my adrenaline pumps extra hard when we are here - I was just trying to get to the front," Bacon, a non-Outlaws driver who finished second said. "I am disappointed we didn't get there, but I'm just thrilled to have another good run. It's been a good year in the winged car and a good year in everything so far, so hopefully I can keep it up and maybe we can steal one somewhere else."

Gravel, in the Big Game Treestands/JRC No. 5, showed speed early in the night as he recorded the overall quick-time during qualifying.

Unfortunately for Gravel, his speed did not translate to his heat race as Price-Miller, a native of nearby Kokomo, Ind., was able to defeat Gravel for the heat win.

Price-Miller's heat win provided an insight into things to come for the non-Outlaw drivers, as former Outlaw driver Madsen also defeated series regulars in his heat race to join Price-Miller and Bacon in six-car dash field.

The dash field was split evenly with the three non-Outlaw drivers versus the three Outlaw drivers of Gravel, Schatz and Brad Sweet, for a six-lap showdown to determine the starting six positions in the feature.

Gravel's luck started with the dash invert draw, as the top four were inverted, catapulting him to the pole-position. Gravel could not capitalize on the lucky draw however, as Madsen, who started on the outside of Gravel, was able to capture the victory in the dash, which placed him on the pole for the feature.

When the green-flag dropped for the feature, Gravel, from the second starting position, powered around Madsen's outside on the opening lap to claim the lead.

Gravel maintained a steady lead early over Madsen and Price-Miller in the Flying AG/360 Yield Center No. 2x, who had started fourth and made his way around third-place starter Schatz.

For the second night in-a-row, the leader was never able to escape his pursuers and build a large lead on the field. Instead, Gravel fought his way through lapped traffic at the tight, quarter-mile track all night, allowing Madsen and Price-Miller to stay glued to his bumper.

As the laps ticked off, Bacon, in the Fatheads Eyewear/Telstar No. 99, managed to charge his way from the fifth starting position to the second spot, as he made his way around both Madsen and Price-Miller near the halfway point in the race.

Bacon reeled in the leader and applied pressure, as he tried to force Gravel to change his line while the two battled through slower lapped traffic.

"[Gravel] just caught a couple of breaks late in the race in traffic when a couple of guys pinched me up into the wall, and I lost just enough ground," Bacon said. I think in open track I could catch right back up to him but the leader sometimes has an advantage when second place shows him their nose, they kind of hesitate a little bit.

With just 10 laps to go, Gravel jumped to the bottom of the race track to stall Bacon's momentum.

"I saw Brady [Bacon] on the bottom, so I had to move down and protect it," Gravel said. "I thought in lapped traffic we were pretty good but it was hard to pass lapped cars, so I was just happy that I could move down and hold him off."

When the checkered flag fell, it was World of Outlaws driver David Gravel that led all 40 laps of the feature to claim the highly contested $10,000 to-win prize at Tri-State Speedway.

"I thought it was big when I cleared two guys on the bottom when Brady was running the bottom, and I know that gave me a little bit of time," Gravel said. "I was just trying to move around and make them guess where I was going, because running first you don't always know what is going on behind you and it's a disadvantage."

Bacon, for the second year in-a-row, finished in the runner-up position to a CJB Motorsports car at Tri-State after finishing behind Paul McMahan in 2015.

"We had a really good car, and we have had a really good car all year," Bacon said. "This is my best chance every year to get a chance to win, and we were really close. It is easier to swallow after last year leading most of the race - tonight we were charging, but just couldn't get there."

Price-Miller held on for a third place finish, which is his best World of Outlaws finish.

"Haubstadt is probably one of my favorite tracks in a winged car," Price-Miller said. "We had a fast car...I think we had a car that could've won, but I just made too many mistakes and lapped traffic was really hectic. I got a little tight in the dirty air, but I'll take it, it was a good run.

"The World of Outlaws are the greatest out there and the toughest in the business...if you can run with them and finish on the podium, it's a good night."

The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series will cross into Pennsylvania for the first time in 2016 for a midweek showdown at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa. for the Gettysburg Clash on Wednesday, May 18. Sweet Surges for Inaugural Plymouth Speedway Win

Picks up series-leading sixth World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory of the season

PLYMOUTH, Ind. - May 13, 2016 - Brad Sweet captured the lead from pole-sitter Joey Saldana early, then held off a challenge from teammate Daryn Pittman late in the race to claim the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series inaugural race at Plymouth (Ind.) Speedway Friday night.

Sweet's victory, his first since Bakersfield Speedway on April 15, is his sixth of the season which breaks a tie with seven-time World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz for most in 2016.

"Typically, I'm not that great on these quarter-mile tracks, but for whatever reason, this year with this package we built it seems we are better on the short tracks but need to get better on the half-miles," Sweet said. "That's part of racing - you're always searching and trying to find things. It's great to get another win under our belts and build momentum."

The Grass Valley, Calif. -native was never able to build a large lead during the 30-lap feature as he had to fight around Saldana early, then fend off tonight's quick-time Logan Schuchart during the middle stages of the race, and finally hold off Pittman at the end for the win.

"It was a great effort by our Great Clips team - congrats to Brad, he did a heck of a job," Pittman said. "We have been running good, just have a lot of second place finishes and we want a win. Kale [Kahne] and Michelle had their baby boy on Tuesday so that was a pretty awesome week for them, just would've liked to get them a win."

At the beginning of the day, Schuchart appeared to be the man to beat after setting a new track record during qualifying.

Unfortunately for Schuchart, the dash draw did not work out in his favor as he had to start at the rear of the six-lap race. Saldana, in the No. 83 Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock car, started from the first position and dominated his way to the victory and the pole position for the feature.

Once the green flag fell, Saldana pulled out to an early lead, then held off second-place starter Sweet on an early race restart.

Following a second early-race caution, Sweet, in the No. 49 Ollies Bargain Outlet/Sage Fruit car, was able to get the jump on the leader for the top spot, as Saldana slid back into the field. When his slide ended, Saldana was marred in the fourth position behind Sweet, Pittman and Schuchart.

As the laps winded down, Sweet maintained his lead but his teammate in the Great Clips/Team ASE No. 9 remained glued to his bumper.

"Daryn [Pittman] would shorten the corner up and gain ground on me and put pressure on me," Sweet said. "I knew I had the lane covered, I just needed to not make a mistake.

"My guys gave me a great race car all night. Once we got the lead, I had a really good car, I just needed to move around a bit there in lapped traffic."

Pittman tried on several occasions to muscle his way around Sweet but could never complete the pass as the leaders navigated through slower traffic.

As Sweet and Pittman fought lapped traffic and each other, a hard charging David Gravel had managed to claw his way from the 14th starting position to crack the top three. Gravel, in the Big Game Treestands/JRC No. 5, joined the Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb cars in the battle for the top spot but came up just short of claiming his second win of the season.

"The track changed and I was able to kind of find the line but Brad had the advantage because he was leading," Pittman said. "We were so much better than him in the middle of three and four that I thought that was going to be the corner I was going to get him, so I was just trying to maintain in one and two.

"He must've really messed up on the cushion in one and two and I got beside him. It must've looked like I was trying to pull a slider on him but I wasn't trying to pass him at that point, I was just trying to get close enough so I could pass him in three and four. Once I showed him my nose, he moved down and that was pretty much the end of the race."

When the checkered flag dropped, it was Sweet who was able to lead a race-high 21 laps and hold off Pittman and Gravel at the end to claim the $10,000 to-win inaugural victory at Plymouth Speedway.

"I can't thank Ollie's Bargain Outlets enough, they have been sponsoring me for about six or seven years," Sweet said. "After I won all those races with Razorback Professional Tools, they were giving me grief saying I need to get the Ollie's car back in victory lane, so it was nice to do that."

Gravel captured tonight's KSE Hard Charger Award after picking up 11 spots to finish in the top 3.

"The track was awesome - it widened out, there was a cushion and you could just run everywhere," Gravel said. "It's awesome running this car, starting in 14th and getting on the podium, I can't complain."

2016 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contended Greg Wilson finished fourth, his best finish so far this year.

Tomorrow the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series will travel over 250 miles south to Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. For more race information and ticket purchasing options, visit www.WoOSprint.com/Tri-State-Speedway.

Captures first victory of the season in front of hometown crowd

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - April 26, 2016 - With friends and family standing next to him in victory lane, Jason Sides exited his car after scoring the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series win on Tuesday night at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark.

The victory, his first since night one of the Boothill Showdown at Dodge City Raceway Park in July 2015, was especially memorable for Sides, who is just over a two hour drive from his hometown of Bartlett, Tenn.

"I am glad everyone made it over from the Memphis, Tenn. area," Sides said. "I guess Pevely (Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55) is the next closest to home, but this is our home track now and I just appreciate everybody coming out on a Tuesday night."

In the closing laps of the 40-lap feature, Sides had to hold off a late race charge from the Big Game Tree Stands/Nyce Crete & Landis No. 5 of David Gravel, who had overcame a deficit of over a second to get to Sides' back bumper. Gravel, who tried a last lap dive bomb for the lead, came up just short and settled for a second-place finish.

"I thought we had something for him," Gravel said. "A couple more laps with those lapped cars and we maybe could've gotten him. But we will take a second, it was a good run for us and we will see what happens in the future.

"We were just trying to do some things different. Sometimes people get too tentative and just run around the bottom, so you just got to keep your momentum up and keep your wing speed up."

Added third place finisher Daryn Pittman on Sides' home track victory:

"I was probably Jason's biggest fan there the last four laps cheering him on. I knew this would be a pretty big win for him, obviously being from close to here, and one of his home tracks. Pretty cool to see him win in front of all the people he has here - his friends and family."

To start the night, Gravel's CJB Motorsports teammate and World of Outlaws champion, Sammy Swindell, set quick-time at the track he has won at three times in series action: twice in 1981 and again in 1992.

Swindell continued his early-night dominance as he led every lap of his heat race and easily earned a spot in the dash.

The invert draw proved to be unlucky for Swindell, as he had to start at the rear of the six-car field following an invert of six. To make matters worse, Swindell eventually lost a motor on the opening laps of the eight-lap dash, and had to take his car to the pits where his team hastily started replacing the motor for the feature.

Oklahoma driver, Brady Bacon, won the dash, which gave him the best view of the green flag for the feature. Unfortunately for Bacon, he lost the lead to the King Racing Products/East Coast Logistics No. 7S of Sides on the opening lap, as the second-place starter easily rocketed to the top spot.

Sides dominated the feature as he led all 40 laps, the victory did not come easy for the 43-year-old driver. Multiple cautions early in the feature never allowed the leader to build up a lead, but also kept Sides from encountering heavy lapped traffic at the 1/4-mile track.

Sides held off challenges from Bacon on the early restarts, then had to fight off challenges from Pittman in the No. 9 Great Clips/Sage Fruit car, who had started third and stayed glued to the front of the field all race long.

Pittman eventually lost the runner-up position to Gravel on a late-race restart, as Gravel jumped from fifth to second in one lap.

"The caution flags hurt and helped, I hated the restarts but it kept us out of lapped traffic," Sides said. "I didn't know [David Gravel] was out there in the closing laps. I saw Daryn [Pittman] on the restarts but I never knew that [David] Gravel got by him on the restart.

"That's good for him, but I am just happy we got the win here. It's as close as we get to home, and I love this place!"

Gravel tried everything he could to rattle Sides for the lead, but Sides held firm at the front of the field, as Gravel settled for second, his first podium finish since Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway on April 15.

"You can't complain with second," Gravel said. "We had a really good car there early, it got tight and scared me a little bit, but I got a few more laps under me and got more confident.

"We got a little free in one and two on those last three laps. We had something there but came up just a little bit short. It really would've been good to get a win there. My buddy Tyler back home got in a real bad car accident and he's still in a coma, so we were trying to get a win here for him but we will get one soon."

Pittman continued his recent podium domination, as he picked up his fourth top-three finish in the last four races.

"It was a good race, we kept making gains on our car all night," Pittman said. "This is a track I have never had a lot of success at, so we were able to run up front and contend for the win.

"That last restart we kind of got pinched on the bottom and just didn't get a good start and got beat, and then [David] Gravel got by us. The car just went away on us a little bit at the end, but all-in-all a great night for our Great Clips team. We will take third and go on to Friday. [Salina Highbanks Speedway] is a really cool track and one that I look forward to going to and hopefully we will be able to improve a few spots there."

Stewart Earns Emotional Texas Outlaw Nationals Victory

Captures Ted Johnson Memorial trophy at Devil's Bowl Speedway

MESQUITE, Texas - April 23, 2016 - An emotional Shane Stewart climbed from his car and wiped away tears of joy after he fought his way to the front of the field and claimed Saturday night's Texas Outlaw Nationals $20,000 to-win finale at Devil's Bowl Speedway, his second World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season.

Stewart is just the third driver to chisel his name into the Ted Johnson Memorial trophy, after Daryn Pittman claimed the inaugural event in 2014 and Donny Schatz won in 2015.

"I'm a little choked up, this is a big win for me," Stewart said. "A lot of people have helped me get to this point. I drove for a lot of good car owners, like my mom and dad who are here.

"It's been a long road to get here that's for sure, and some days you don't think you're ever going to get here but when you finally do it makes it really special. There were plenty of times I thought "this is it, I am going to have to get a regular job" but people kept believing in me and giving me opportunities - [team owners] Justin [Marks] and Kyle [Larson] are a great example of that."

Stewart's victory was not due to a lack of competition, as the Bixby, Okla. -native fought his way around Pittman, who owned the top spot for much of the night after leading the opening 23 laps, then held off Joey Saldana for the victory.

"This year we are believing in each other and doing a good job," Saldana said. "Dennis [Roth] is providing us with all the great equipment we need to compete at a high level and that is showing out here on the racetrack, so hopefully we can continue this and keep the Roth family happy."

To start the night, Jason Sides captured the quick-time award, which is his first of the season, then won his heat race to qualify for the dash. Unfortunately for Sides, the dash invert hurt his chances, as he had to start the six-lap race in the sixth position and never returned to the front of the field.

The winner of the dash and first place starter went to Jason Johnson, who started third Friday night and finished fifth. Unfortunately for the Eunice, La. -native, he never led a lap in the 30-lap feature, as Pittman, who started second, rocketed around him for the lead on the opening lap.

Pittman, in the No. 9 Great Clips/Sage Fruit car, appeared to have control over the top spot, much the same way he did Friday night, as he easily pulled away from second place Joey Saldana, who had worked his way up from the fourth position.

Early in the feature Pittman and Saldana stayed nose-to-tail, but it wasn't until a spree of late race cautions that Stewart would enter the picture in his American Born Moonshine/Eneos Oil No. 2.

Stewart started the feature in the third position and lurked in the top-five the entire race, biding his time and waiting for a chance to challenge the leaders.

That chance came following a red flag with six laps to go.

Stewart worked his way around Saldana on the ensuing restart, then set his sights on the Pittman who was leading. Stewart got by Pittman for the lead just before the race-long leader suffered a flat left rear tire, which all but ended his chances of claiming the win.

Stewart held off challenges from both Saldana in the Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock No. 83 and Kerry Madsen in the Keneric Healthcare/American Racing Wheels No. 29 in the final few laps to capture the victory, one that he was able to share with his family, who was present for the race.

"Restarting on the outside just saved me," Stewart said. "I'll humbly accept this win - we didn't have the best car tonight. We didn't have anything for Daryn [Pittman], and you never want to see a competitor go out with a flat tire, but we were just in the right place at the right time and took full advantage of it."

Saldana, winner of Friday night's feature at Devil's Bowl, finished the runner-up position after again contending for the win, but just coming up one spot short of sweeping the weekend.

"On that last double-file restart, Pittman had a flat tire and you know that tire is going to go down and have an issue," Saldana said. "I ran my car too safe there and got snookered there by Shane [Stewart] and got tight.

"Definitely felt like I had a second place car. I was right there with Daryn [Pittman] on that restart, and you hate losing races on restarts - I lost one last week at Bakersfield Speedway...I have got to get better at that if I am going to win these races like this."

Madsen managed a third place finish after he started the feature in the 10th position and charging his way to the front of the field.

"The car was great," Madsen said. "I had a great time coming from mid-pack to the podium. The track was fantastic and the car was great, my guys did a great job.

"I have two good race cars and I keep letting the guys down. Hopefully, if we continue to get this thing up front, people put so much into this team, and the team deserves better than what I am giving them at the moment."

Saldana Outduels Pittman for Texas Outlaw Nationals Victory

Captures lead with two laps to go to win opening night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway

MESQUITE, Texas - April 22, 2016 - Joey Saldana charged from his fifth starting position to rocket around a red-hot Daryn Pittman with just two laps remaining to claim the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Texas Outlaw Nationals at Devil's Bowl Speedway on Friday night.

Saldana returned to victory lane for the first time since the opening night at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 3.

"We've had a really good car this year, but the driver's made a lot of mistakes," Saldana said. "Tonight everything hit on all cylinders and it was just an awesome night...I can't thank Dennis and Teresa Roth enough for this opportunity.

"It was just a great effort by everybody tonight, they worked really hard and I am proud of what we have done tonight. It shows that we should have done more of this but I have got to do a better job, and tonight I feel like I did a pretty good job."

Pittman, after leading the majority of the 25-lap feature, settled for a second-place finish, the seventh time he has finished in the runner-up position this season.

"We were sniffing three in-a-row, but just got beat at the end of the race," Pittman said. "I got in traffic and got tighter as the race went on and I guess I was just kind of afraid to try a different line.

"I wasn't really close enough to a lapped car to try the bottom and so I just got tight behind a lapped car there and got rolled up and Joey [Saldana] drove by us on the bottom in one and two. I don't know if he was running down there the whole time, but he stayed down there the rest of the race."

To start the night, Sam Haftertepe Jr. in the Wells Engines/Highway 79 Collision Center No. 15H, looked to have the car to beat as he paced qualifying and captured the win in his heat to gain admittance to the dash. Hafertepe started on the pole-position for the six-lap dash after drawing a zero for the invert.

The Texas native continued his early night dominance, as he rolled to the victory in the dash after leading every lap and holding off a challenge from Kerry Madsen.

Once the green flag fell to start the feature event, Madsen, in the Keneric Healthcare/American Racing Wheels No. 29, accomplished what he could not do in the dash, and made his way around Haftertepe to claim the top spot.

Madsen's grip on the top spot was short lived and slipped away following an early race caution that allowed Pittman, who started the race in the third position and worked his way into second, to restart next to the leader and eventually complete the pass for the lead on lap nine.

As the race reached the latter portions, it appeared Pittman was staring at a three-peat after winning the SoCal Showdown at Perris Auto Speedway and the NAPA Wildcat Showdown at USA Raceway.

Pittman led a race-high 13 laps but Saldana, in the No. 83 Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock car, continued to lurk behind the leader. Saldana never allowed the leader to escape his grasps, even as the leaders reached the tail end of the field and started lapping slower cars.

With just a handful of laps remaining, Saldana closed on the leader. With just two laps remaining, the "Brownsburg Bullet" completed the pass on Pittman for the top spot.

Saldana pulled away from Pittman and third-place finisher Brad Sweet to claim the victory on the opening night of the Texas Outlaws Nationals at the historic Devil's Bowl Speedway.

"I moved around a little bit through the top and the middle and I could see Daryn [Pittman] was staying on the bottom and then moved to the top," Saldana said. "For some reason I decided to run the bottom through three and four and I caught some ground on him, so I knew if we got to lapped traffic I could use that. It just worked out, it was a great race, and the fans saw a great race - a lot of different lead changes with people moving all over the place."

Even though Pittman didn't capture the victory, he was still excited to continue their recent momentum and looks forward to tomorrow's race at Devil's Bowl.

"We just got beat, nothing to be disappointed about, we had a great race car," Pittman said. "We were up front tonight and that's all you can ask for. We will come back tomorrow night and try again and try to improve one spot."

Picking up his series leading 16th top-five of the season, Sweet in the Razorback Professional Tools/Riebes Auto Parts No. 49 managed to charge his way from the 11th starting position to score a podium finish.

"My guys have given me great race cars all year and we seem to shine in the A-mains," Sweet said. "These are the nights we need to have, big picture-wise, coming from 11th to third.

"We were really coming on strong there, but it was a short race - 25 laps went by really quick. We got caught in lapped traffic and were able to maneuver around a little bit. We got to get the car better for tomorrow night, big money is on the line and a few more laps."

The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series will resume action tomorrow night for round two of the Texas Outlaw Nationals double-header at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. Great seats are still available, and can be purchased at the track box office.

Schatz Gets Mini Gold CUp Win after Bad Luck for Netto

California driver leads most laps but comes up five laps short at Silver Dollar Speedway

CHICO, Calif. - April 2, 2016 - DJ Netto led the Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway on Saturday night with five laps left when he ran out of fuel and allowed Donny Schatz, who started 14th, to capitalize on his misfortune and score his fifth World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series win of the season.

"The guys have given me a great car every time we unload here at Chico," Netto said. "Tonight, right out of the box we were good...the main event I knew we were going to be good. We got to the top early and were able to make some moves early before anybody else found it.

"We got out to the lead and I felt good. Then we had all those yellows, I was running the fuel valve, bleeding it down, but I guess it just wasn't enough. I felt it stumbling coming down the back stretch and it's a tough way to lose one, but we win as a team and lose as a team and we will come back and try again next week."

Schatz, in the Bad Boy/Chevrolet Performance No. 15, captured his series leading fifth victory of the season, four of which have come within the last month.

"On the restart, I'm assuming [DJ Netto] ran out of fuel and was right in the middle of the track, and Daryn [Pittman] didn't get a very good start and I was able to capitalize on that" Schatz said. "Passing is such a premium, everybody's got good cars. If there's an opportunity you have to take it - make it or break it."

The Fargo, N.D -native struggled with his car early in the night, as he posted one of the slowest times in qualifying.

The California drivers appeared to be the ones to beat early on, as both Netto and Tyler Walker passed quick-time recipient, and Friday night's winner, Brad Sweet in their heat race to qualify for the 6-lap Dash.

Walker started on the pole-position of the Dash and dominated as he held off Daryn Pittman, who finished second and accompanied him on the front row for the 40-lap feature event.

When the green flag dropped on the 40 lap feature, Walker rocketed away from Pittman and Netto, who started the feature in fourth place in the Netto Agricultural/Penny-Newman Grain No. 88N.

Walker's lead proved to be short lived, as a hard charging Netto powered by both the leader and Pittman on the outside following an early race caution on lap three.

The feature was slowed by a flurry of cautions early, allowing many drivers such as Kerry Madsen, who started 11th, and Schatz to climb their way to the front of the field.

One of the cautions that slowed the field early was for Jason Johnson as he hit the cushion and flipped multiple times. Johnson was OK, but his car had to be pushed to the work area, where his crew hastily changed a front axle and got him back into the race.

Their quick work allowed Johnson to rebound for a hard fought seventh place finish at the end of the night.

With less than 10 laps remaining, Netto had firm control on the top spot as he led Madsen and Pittman by over two seconds. Lurking just behind the leaders was Schatz, who had quietly marched from his 14th starting position to crack the top five.

Nearing the closing laps, another rash of cautions slowed the race. As the field prepared for the final restart, Netto led Pittman and Schatz to the green flag.

Shortly after taking the green, Netto's car sputtered on the back stretch, leaving his first World of Outlaws win out of reach.

Netto pulled off the track and into the pits, handing the lead to Schatz who made his way around Pittman for second just before the leader encountered his issues.

Schatz controlled the top spot for the remaining handful of laps, as he defeated Pittman and Shane Stewart for his series-leading fifth victory of the season.

"This race team doesn't give up," Schatz said. "We haven't showed what we are capable of qualifying, but you have to think outside the box a little bit and I think we just eliminated the box.

"We had to come a long way to get to that spot. At the end of the race, guys kept doing different things...A lot of scenarios were going on, we had a lot of yellow flags, but that's the way it goes and I am just glad to be here."

Pittman had one of the more consistent cars of the night as he qualified third, won his heat, finished second in the dash and ran inside the top three for most of the night, resulting in a second place finish in the feature.

"I was just trying to get to the checkered flag," Pittman said. "We got a lot of damage on the front end...I just had to run the bottom because I didn't trust the damage I had. We had nothing for Donny [Schatz] at that point with a wounded car, so I am happy with second.

"My biggest mistake was going slow through turns one and two on that restart because I thought the yellow was coming out for [DJ] Netto...but it is what it is, I don't think with a wounded car it would've changed the outcome of the race if we had a yellow and restarted with the lead or not."

Stewart, in the American Born Moonshine/Eneos Oil No. 2, quietly came home with another podium finish, his fifth of the season.

"It was a solid third place night and I really feel bad for DJ [Netto], it really stinks to lead a race like that and run out of gas," Stewart said. "It was a wild race, it typically is here at Chico. That's the crazy thing about this racetrack is you never know what you're going to get here."

Brad Sweet Battles Logan Schuchart for Ocean Speedway Win

Shark Racing teammates Schuchart and Allen claim second and third place finishes

WATSONVILLE, Calif. — April 1, 2016 — Logan Schuchart looked poised to claim his first ever World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory Friday night at the Ocean Outlaw Showdown at Ocean Speedway, but a late race restart put Brad Sweet in position and Sweet battled past Schuchart with 13 laps to go and claimed his fourth win of the season.

“If everyone knew what Shark Racing goes through to run two cars up and down the road, hats off to them,” Sweet said. “For both of them to be up here on the podium that’s amazing and I hate to steal this win away from them, but that’s racing.

“My guys have given me a great car all season long. When you run in the top five each week, you get a couple of these wins every now and then.”

For Schuchart, the disappointment of coming short of his first win was tempered by his second place finish and the third place finish of his teammate, Jacob Allen.

“When we started this thing three years ago, most of these guys didn’t think we wouldn’t last the first year,” Schuchart said. “Now we’re out here in our third year. Without our sponsors and everyone that helps us out, we wouldn’t be able to be out here.

“For Jacob and I we wanted to be a little bit better, a one-two would’ve been awesome, but Brad [Sweet] is on top of his game and they’re really fast right now, but the Shark team is getting better and better.”

The finish is his best since a second place finish at Thunderbowl Raceway in 2014.

Jason Johnson, fresh off a victory at Placerville Speedway, kicked off the night, the Outlaws’ first appearance at the track since 2008, with the qualifying quick time.

But it was Schuchart and Allen out front after the Dash inversion draw gave the teammates the top-two starting positions in the Dash.

Allen, in the Mark Pell Tire Service/Marty Thompson Investments No. 1A, jumped around his teammate and grabbed the early lead in the Dash, as he dominated all six laps to capture the first-place starting position for the 35-lap feature. Schuchart finished in second, setting up a Shark Racing front row.

When the green flag fell on the feature, Schuchart shot around Allen for the lead on the opening lap, and pulled away from the rest of the field as his teammate settled into the second position with Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb teammates Daryn Pittman and Brad Sweet lurking behind.

The young, Hanover, Pa. –native controlled the top spot for much of the race, leading the opening 21 laps. Unfortunately for Schuchart, winning his first ever World of Outlaws race would not be that easy.

A restart just past the halfway point gave Sweet the opportunity he needed to gain on Schuchart. Sweet drove his Razorback Professional Tools No. 49 from fourth on the restart around Pittman and Allen to move into the second position, just behind the leader.

Schuchart did everything he could to hold off Sweet, but Sweet had too much momentum built up on the high-side of the track and rocketed around Schuchart for the lead with 13 laps left.

Sweet controlled the top spot through the final laps and held off Schuchart and Allen to capture his first victory since he won at Cotton Bowl Speedway on Feb. 26.

“That’s racing in California in March and April,” said the Grass Valley, Calif. –native Sweet. “It’s always going to be a little more hooked up than in July or August. They gave us a great racing surface tonight, it was smooth and opening up all night, but it’s hard to account for the cooler temperatures, it keeps the moisture in the dirt.”

Sweet extends his championship lead to 84 points over second place Shane Stewart.

Allen completed the sweep of the podium for the Shark Racing team, as he scored a career best finish of third.

“With the lead that close to you, I was just going for it all and hoping to finish the race,” Allen said. “That was a lot of fun. Being up there with everybody, it means the world to me and I can’t thank everyone enough for helping us out.

“This is a huge night for me, I am just very blessed and thankful to be here.”

Donny Schatz was the night’s KSE Racing Hard Charger, advancing 12 positions to finish in sixth.
