Hometown Heroes Night Proves Perfect for Lussier’s First Devil’s Bowl Win

Aube, McKiernan, Messier on top in support classes

WEST HAVEN, Vt. –June 25, 2016 ... Billy Lussier thrilled his hometown crowd at the half-mile Asphalt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, June 25, taking his first career victory in a wire-to-wire romp. Somewhat fittingly, the Fair Haven, Vt. driver’s milestone win came on “Hometown Heroes” Night presented by Rutland Regional Medical Center and Whelen Engineering. Other winners in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action included Jamie Aube, Jim McKiernan, and Eric Messier.

Lussier, who lives just five miles from the speedway and had a large cheering section in the grandstands, drove the entire caution-free 30-lap feature race for the Bond Auto Parts Sportsman Modified division out front and opened up a sizeable lead on the field. It was almost not to be for Lussier, however, as his crew discovered a broken suspension component on the No. 25 Fair Haven Chrysler-Dodge/Liberty Street Discount Beverage & Deli car after qualifying and made hasty repairs just minutes before the green flag.

“This one is for the whole crew and my family, and all the fans that have supported us for so many years here,” Lussier said in victory lane. “The hard work paid off tonight. This is just awesome.”

Jackie Brown Jr. of Hurley, N.Y., held second place for much of the race before former champion Ron Proctor chased him down in the final 10 laps. Proctor, of Charlton, N.Y., took the runner-up spot, followed by Brown, Jason Durgan, and Vince Quenneville Jr.

North Ferrisburgh, Vt., native and veteran racer Jamie Aube took his first win of the season in the Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Model division, which ran a two-segment, scored feature event. Aube was the runner-up in both 20-lap legs of the race for a total low score of four points. Robert Bryant Jr., Seth Bridge, and Steve Miller all tied at seven points, but Bryant got the tiebreaker for the runner-up position based on his win in the final segment. Bridge was third overall followed by first-segment winner Miller, and John Donahue with eight points.

The Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegade division ran a similar format with two 15-lap scored segments, and Jim McKiernan of Moriah Center, N.Y., swept both halves of the race for a perfect two-point score and the overall win. R.J. Germain finished second overall with five points, followed by rookie Austin McKiernan – the winner’s son – at seven points. Scott FitzGerald and Tony Salerno completed the top five.

Rookie Eric “Mongo” Messier of Hinesburg, Vt., overcame a hard crash last week and transmission problems on Saturday afternoon for his first career win in the hotly contested Portland Glass Mini Stock race. Messier, runner-up Brad Bertrand, and third-place Harold LaVair were among the drivers that combined for nine lead changes in just 15 laps. Garrett Given and C.J. LaVair rounded out the top five finishers.

The annual “Hometown Heroes” event recognized all members of local law enforcement, first responders, and members of the armed forces with free admission, and an on-track parade of fire trucks representing the West Haven, Fair Haven, and Castleton departments highlighted intermission. The Thomas Dairy Kids Club also hosted a candy scramble on the frontstretch during intermission.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is back in action for two nights on Independence Day weekend with Rutland County’s biggest and loudest fireworks shows. Racing is on the half-mile Asphalt Track on Saturday, July 2 and on the 3/10-mile Dirt Track on Sunday, July 3. Special general admission each night is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors (62+) and students (13-17), and free for kids age 12 and under.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is located on Route 22A in West Haven, Vt., four miles north of Exit 2 off of U.S. Route 4 and just 20 minutes from Rutland, Vt. Tremont Tramples Topless Modifieds on Devil’s Bowl Speedway Dirt

Donnelly wins Sprint Car thriller; Mosher gets first Renegade win

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Kenny Tremont Jr.’s name repeats throughout Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s record books as its most successful stock car driver, and on Sunday, June 19, he added to his legacy by winning for the 71st time at the Vermont facility. The West Sand Lake, N.Y., veteran dominated on Central Vermont Motorcycles Night for his first win in the track’s 50th season, taking the “topless” special on the 3/10-mile Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl. Also in victory lane during the night were Chris Donnelly and Matt Mosher.

Tremont started ninth on the 22-car NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sportsman Modified field, which ran with the cars’ roofs removed for the special 35-lap race, and once he gained the lead he was untouchable. A stackup involving all but six cars slowed the race on lap 2 and several other cautions dotted the event, but “Slingshot” Tremont was never headed for the lead during any of the restarts and his familiar No. 115 S&S Asphalt Paving/Rifenburg Construction-sponsored car won by a full straightaway.

Derrick McGrew of Ballston Spa, N.Y., was the best of the rest and had a solid drive to second place. Behind him, several drivers battled for third place before it came down to Adam Pierson and Bobby Hackel; Pierson, of East Corinth, Vt., tried for several laps to get past Hackel before finally rocketing underneath him in Turn 2 with two laps remaining. Hackel finished fourth with Tim LaDuc fifth.

McGrew, Chris Murray, and Billy Lussier won qualifying heats, and rookie Justin Severance won the consolation race for the second-straight week.

“Professor” Chris Donnelly of Piermont, N.H., won a barnburner of a 30-lap feature for the Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) series. Donnelly came from 13th starting position and trailed Dan Douville for several circuits as they navigated heavy lapped traffic. Donnelly surprised Douville with a three-wide move on the backstretch to take the lead and then ran to the win.

Douville, of Bridgewater, N.H., held on as the runner-up. Double-duty racer Hackel, of Rensselaer, N.Y. – in just his third start in a winged Sprint Car and first with the SCoNE group – started last on the 18-car field and was electric on his way through traffic, finishing in third place with an underpowered 305-cubic-inch engine racing against the high-horsepower SCoNE 360s. Dash winner Jake Williams and Kevin Chaffee rounded out the top five; Douville and Chaffee won heat races.

Matt Mosher of Queensbury, N.Y., captured his first-ever victory in a weekly division at Devil’s Bowl by taking the 15-lap feature for the Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegades. Mosher held off a strong charge by Paul Braymer of Granville, N.Y., for his landmark win. Heat winner Aaron Fachini was third, followed by Curtis Condon and rookie Brian Bishop Jr.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is back in action on the half-mile Asphalt Track on Saturday, June 25, with the annual “Hometown Heroes” Night presented by Rutland Regional Medical Center and Whelen Engineering. All fire, police, rescue, military, veterans, and corrections officers in uniform or with proper identification will be admitted for free. Regular general admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and free for kids age 12 and under. The next Dirt Track event is on Sunday, July 3.

Fireworks Fly for Ryan in Wild Memorial Day Modified Fight at Devil’s Bowl

Masterson, Wood repeat; McKiernan, Murray score first wins of season

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Jimmy Ryan may have led every lap of the Bond Auto Parts Sportsman Modified feature race on the Asphalt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, May 28, but the box score won’t show just how wild the action was behind him. The veteran stock car racer from Shoreham, Vt., outlasted a rough-and-tumble field of competitors to end a six-year winless streak at the inaugural “Yorkmont Memorial Day 5000” and headed a winners list that included Josh Masterson, Jim McKiernan, Zach Wood, and Jeff Murray.

In addition to the on-track action, race fan Emily Catellier of Rutland, Vt., was the happy winner of a $5,000 cash prize given away by sponsor Yorkmont Auto Auctions of Fair Haven, Vt. The event was capped off by a holiday fireworks show by Northstar Fireworks.

One week after a fuel line problem left him on the sidelines, Ryan was in the right place all race long, ahead of several multi-car wrecks that shook up the field. Although Ryan said that his car wasn’t handling well, he was able to withstand a sequence of restarts and drive away from the pack every time. No less than eight different drivers tried to rattle Ryan in the early stages of the race before wrecks, spins, or damage hampered their progress.

When the smoke cleared after 30 laps, Ryan was the convincing winner for the first time since August 29, 2010, and for the first time in his career under the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Jackie Brown Jr., of Hurley, N.Y., withstood a long challenge from Jason Durgan and held on for the runner-up spot. Morrisonville, N.Y., racer Durgan settled for third ahead of Ron Proctor and Joey Roberts.

Josh Masterson of Bristol, Vt., was the winner of an entertaining 40-lap race in the Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Model division, for his second victory in as many races in 2016. The Late Models threw off a barnburner, with side-by-side racing leaving tire marks on the doors of almost every car in the class. Masterson drove a strong car to the front of the field after battling with several drivers, then beat hard-charging Robert Bryant Jr., in a restart with just two laps remaining.

Brooklyn, Conn., racer Bryant thrilled the fans with back-to-front run, and came out on top of a sensational fight with Bobby Therrien of Hinesburg, Vt., for the runner-up position. The ever-improving Seth Bridge finished fourth with early leader Steve Miller fifth.

Jim McKiernan of Moriah Center, N.Y., traded some full-fender barbs with Scott FitzGerald during the 20-lap Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegade race, but came out on top for the second main-event win of his career at Devil’s Bowl. The runner finished ahead of FitzGerald, of West Rutland, Vt., with Colchester, Vt.’s Matt Monaghan third. Ray Germain Jr. finished fourth in his first start in two years, and Tony Salerno was fifth.

Rookie Zach Wood continued the perfect start to his Portland Glass Mini Stock career, going two-for-two in his first two starts. After winning on opening night a week ago, the Georgia, Vt., youngster ran to the win. Wood’s teammate and fellow rookie Eric Messier of Hinesburg, Vt., finished second for the second-straight week. Brad Bertrand, Garrett Given, and Andrew FitzGerald completed the top five.

Jeff Murray of Georgia, Vt., won one of the most competitive Enduro Series races in recent memory, taking the lead from Rutland, Vt.’s Cory Gray with a dozen laps remaining and fending him off in the final laps. Gray held on for second ahead of Andrew Lopes, Brandon Gray, and Brett Wood.

The Dirt Track at Devil’s Bowl Speedway is in action on Sunday, May 29 at 6:00 p.m. for its season-opening event. The Sprint Cars of New England headline the program along with Sportsman Modifieds, Renegades, and Mini Stocks. Regular general admission is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors (62+) and students (13-17). Kids age 12 and under are always admitted for free.

The Asphalt Track resumes on Saturday, June 4 at 6:00 p.m. with the People’s United Bank 100 for the American-Canadian Tour Late Models, plus the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series weekly divisions.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is located on Route 22A in West Haven, Vt., four miles north of Exit 2 off of U.S. Route 4 and just 20 minutes from Rutland, Vt. Quenneville Opens Devil’s Bowl Speedway Title Defense With Victory

Masterson, FitzGerald, Wood also take opening night wins

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Vince Quenneville Jr. showed a good opening night crowd that he never missed a beat over the winter at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, May 21. The Brandon, Vt., speedster and defending Asphalt Track champion ran to a dominant win in the Bond Auto Parts Sportsman Modified division to open the 50th season of racing at the Rutland County facility. Other winners in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) action included Josh Masterson, Scott FitzGerald, and rookie Zach Wood.

Quenneville left little doubt during the 50-lap lid-lifter, and was fortunate to start on the outside of the front row by virtue of random draw. He had to endure only a single restart, and quickly stretched out to a big lead and a relatively easy win. As fast as he was, Quenneville’s biggest challenge came from his own car, which was quick on the stopwatch but a monster to handle.

“The car was really tight entering the corners, so I had to compensate for it and drive harder to make the back end loose and help me rotate in the center of the turns,” Quenneville said. “It was a lot of work inside the car, but it was a lot of fun.”

A red-hot battle for second place between Jason Durgan of Morrisonville, N.Y., and Charlton, N.Y.’s Ron Proctor was interrupted when a lapped car spun off the track and brought out the yellow flag. The field had crossed over into two columns for the ensuing restart, but just after the yellow lights were turned off and as the pace car was exiting the track, another lapped car pulled out of its place in line, directly in front of Durgan, who was running in third place at the time. Per track rules, Durgan’s outside lane was supposed to have advanced, though several drivers tried instead to re-cross the order and caused a bit of confusion.

The restart was called off by race control and the re-cross was undone, therefore giving Durgan second place in the restart running order. He held on to keep the spot for the balance of the race, while a disappointed Proctor settled for third. Joey Roberts finished fourth with Jackie Brown Jr. fifth in his first start on the Asphalt Track at Devil’s Bowl.

Josh Masterson of Bristol, Vt., practically mirrored Quenneville’s performance in the 40-lap feature for the Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Model division. The defending champion started from the outside pole and survived a lone restart for the opening-night win. Veteran racer Jamie Aube of North Ferrisburgh, Vt., gave chase in the final laps but was unable to reel the leader in and took the runner-up spot. Robert Bryant Jr. of Brooklyn, Conn., won a hard-fought battle with Steve Miller for third place. Miller was fourth with Bill Donahue fifth.

Scott FitzGerald of West Rutland, Vt., made his large cheering section happy with a victory in the 20-lap Rosen & Berger Auto Recyclers Renegade feature. FitzGerald drove what he called a “perfect” racecar to his third career win ahead of a charging Jim McKiernan of Moriah Center, N.Y. Matt Monaghan, Austin McKiernan, and Bill Burlingame completed the top five.

Portland Glass Mini Stock rookie Zach Wood of Georgia, Vt., put a nifty story together in the first start of his weekly NWAAS career. Wood stole the lead from teammate and fellow rookie Eric Messier of Hinesburg, Vt., with a nudge, then put his father, Brett Wood, a lap down on the final lap to drive to his first victory. Messier took second in his first start as well. Defending champion Chris LaVair – who sold his title-winning car to Zach Wood – finished third ahead of Brad Bertrand and Garrett Given.

Winners of the “Best Appearing Car” awards from last week’s fan festival in Downtown Rutland were revealed; Durgan’s red-and-yellow No. 17 car topped the Sportsman Modifieds, Bryant’s black-and-blue No. 3RB Chevrolet won the Late Model class, Jimmy Bushey’s “Purple Rain” No. 11 car won in the Renegade division, and Messier’s white-and-green No. 88X car was the Mini Stock winner.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway Opens 50th Season with Action-Packed Weekend

Kids bike races, Modified 50-lappers, tribute to ’67 champ Hulbert highlight two nights of racing

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – The wait is over for local stock car racing fans, as Devil’s Bowl Speedway opens its 50th season of action this weekend, May 21-22, with a two-night schedule jammed with action. The Rutland County track’s landmark golden anniversary will be the first full season of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing on both the half-mile Asphalt Track and the 3/10-mile Dirt Track.

Each night will feature a 50-lap Sportsman Modified race and lots of other action, along with kids bicycle races, and Sunday’s event will also honor inaugural Devil’s Bowl track champion Mert Hulbert. It appears that Mother Nature is prepared to cooperate as well, with spectacular weather forecasted for the weekend.

The Devil’s Bowl season kicks off on Saturday, May 21, at 6:00 p.m. with a full four-division card on the Asphalt Track, featuring the Bond Auto Parts Sportsman Modifieds, the Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Models, the Rosen & Berger Renegades, and the Portland Glass Mini Stocks. Vince Quenneville Jr., Josh Masterson, and Chris LaVair will be back to defend their 2015 titles in their respective Modified, Late Model, and Mini Stock divisions, while the Renegade chase is wide open.

On Sunday, May 22, at 6:00 p.m., the Dirt Track is in action with Sportsman Modifieds, Renegades, and Mini Stocks. Kenny Tremont Jr. chases his eighth Devil’s Bowl Modified title, and Renegade champion Darrell Older will have to contend with Mini Stock champion Brian Bishop, who will compete as a Renegade rookie.

Sunday’s Dirt Track event will open the 50th season’s “Tribute Series” by honoring inaugural Devil’s Bowl Speedway track champion Mert “Socks” Hulbert. The Oak Hill, N.Y., native, now 79, was the first Devil’s Bowl title winner in 1967. Hulbert, who earned his nickname because he often raced in his stocking feet, will be in attendance at the event and will display one of his former racecars.

The Thomas Diary Kids Club hosts bicycle races on both nights, and kids of all ages are encouraged to bring their bikes to the track. Races will be divided into three age groups, and – like all Kids Club activities at Devil’s Bowl – are free to enter. The ever-popular Interstate Batteries “Fun Bus” will also be in action both nights.

Special general admission for the Asphalt Track event on Saturday, May 21 is $15 for adults and $13 for seniors (62+) and students (13-17). Regular general admission for the Dirt Track on Sunday, May 22 is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors (62+) and students (13-17). Kids age 12 and under are always admitted for free.

Next Era of Racing Ready to Begin at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in 2016

New schedule to see Vermont track host full-time asphalt and dirt racing in 50th season

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Transformation has been almost constant at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in its first 49 seasons, and the Vermont track’s 50th summer in 2016 will continue the trend. Since its opening, the speedway has seen action shift from natural Slate Valley clay to asphalt – and back again – twice. As both a nod to the past and a look toward the future, the facility will host races on both surfaces on a full-time basis this year for the first time.

A brief history: Founder C.J. Richards built Devil’s Bowl Speedway in 1967 as a half-mile dirt track before paving it in 1971. The clay returned in 1975 and remained for the next 35 seasons, and then Richards repaved the track in 2010. Mike and Alayne Bruno began promoting the track in 2012 and have grown the asphalt program as part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, but also realized that many local fans missed the dirt.

In response, a new 3/10-mile dirt track was constructed inside the asphalt oval, and eight races were run during a trial period in 2014-15. After learning the quirks of the new layout, both the asphalt and dirt tracks got the green light to each hold full seasons of NASCAR-sanctioned racing in 2016 – a “best of both worlds” scenario.

For the 50th season, the biggest change is the schedule itself. Racing has moved to an earlier 6:00 p.m. start so that most events will end around 9:00 p.m. and allow fans and racers to return home earlier. Weekly asphalt events, 14 in all, have been moved to Saturday nights – instead of Friday nights in recent years – to better accommodate fans and racers during the work week. And in keeping with a tradition that was held for most of the “dirt years” at Devil’s Bowl, the 13-race schedule for the dirt track will see Sunday night racing at 6:00 p.m.

“I’ve always felt that if you keep doing the same things over and over every year, the product becomes boring and stale,” Devil’s Bowl promoter Mike Bruno said. “We have exciting racing, but we saw the need to shake things up a little bit. We’re really excited to kick off the 50th season at Devil’s Bowl in a couple weeks.”

The rulebooks for both surfaces are virtually identical in the Sportsman Modified, Renegade, and Mini Stock divisions, and a dual NASCAR sanction means double the post-season money. Several drivers in each class have indicated that they will race full-time on one surface and at least part-time on the other, and Modified veterans Vince Quenneville Jr., Billy Lussier, and Jackie Brown Jr. have each committed to running all 27 events.

The asphalt oval opens on Saturday, May 21 at 6:00 p.m., and the dirt track opens on Sunday, May 22 at 6:00 p.m. Each track will have kids bicycle races, 50-lap Modified features, and lots of other action.
