Cap Henry earns second-ever All Star victory in Ohio Sprint Speedweek opener at Attica Raceway Park

ATTICA, Ohio (July 3, 2020) - For the second time in his career, and for the first time at Attica Raceway Park, Republic, Ohio’s Cap Henry is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, doing so over a stout contingent of 46 entries during night one of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires.

Impressive, nonetheless, Henry’s route to Attica Raceway Park victory lane commenced from the third row, forced to work his way to the front twice while fending off former All Star winner and California standout, Buddy Kofoid, as well as two-time All Star champion and current Series point leader, Aaron Reutzel. Henry’s second and final takeover occurred on lap 35, using the last inch of Attica’s bottom groove to sneak under Kofoid as the pair battled off of turn four.

Kofoid chased Henry to the final checkers, followed by Reutzel, Cale Thomas and Cale Conley.

“Brett and Patty Lane gave me a great opportunity here and we continue to make the most of it. Zack (Meyers) came on board last year and this is incredible,” Cap Henry said, driver of the Brett and Patty Lane-owned/Dragon’s Milk White/Beer Barrel Bourbon/Pro Auto Wraps/FK Rod Ends/No. 4 sprint car. “I’ve come so close to winning one of these speedweek races here and to finally knock one off is so cool.”

Starting from the fifth position, Henry’s initial jump proved to be beneficial, using momentum to slip his way into third before the completion of lap one. Aaron Reutzel, fresh off of a win at Volunteer Speedway, led the field from the outside-pole.

By the end of lap three, Henry had powered by Kofoid to take control of second, now setting his aim on the defending All Star champion. Inching closer and closer as the laps clicked down, Henry was in position to take the lead for the first time on lap 12, eventually cruising by Reutzel on the bottom just as the leaders were approaching slower traffic. Kofoid mimicked Henry’s move and also powered by Reutzel to take second on lap 15.

The 40-lap main event’s first and only caution appeared on lap 21 ultimately setting up a single-file restart. A better launch for Kofoid proved to be a benefactor for the Penngrove, California-native, using the top of turns one and two to slingshot around Henry before pinching off the No. 4 in turn three.

Although Kofoid was able to maintain composure and keep command, Henry never lost sight of the Ed Neumeister-owned entry and kept himself within striking distance. By lap 35, Henry was ready to pounce again, this time squeezing by Kofoid on the bottom of turn four.

Despite one last encounter with traffic, Henry held tough, driving away to a $5,000 payday.

“Once Buddy (Kofoid) got back by me, I just needed to settle down and get back into my rhythm,” Henry continued. “I kept trying to get lower and lower, all while avoiding the infield tires. I just had to be patient. Lucky for me, our car was great on those long runs. We ended up getting back to him just in time.

“I really wasn’t sure what to do for that restart. I heard (Kofoid) and then I saw him, then I knew I was in trouble. I just had to get settled down and rely on my car on those long runs.”

Aaron Reutzel tracks down Cory Eliason to score Volunteer Speedway victory

BULLS GAP, Tenn. (June 27, 2020) - It took fifth-starting Aaron Reutzel 23 circuits to track down Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 championship rival Cory Eliason, but once the Clute, Texas-native secured the top spot on lap 24, the Texas Sprint Car Nationals main event on the highbanks of Volunteer Speedway was as good as complete. Although forced to endure a green-white-checkered finish, Reutzel’s dominance was clear, eventually escaping to a two-second advantage in just two trips around the speedway.

A sweet ending to a bitter night for the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports team, Reutzel was forced to change motors after his respective hot lap session, only to be caught-up in an incident during the evening’s dash. The familiar No. 87 did restart the dash, but had to settle with a fifth-place result.

The $5,000 triumph, a first-ever for Reutzel at Volunteer and a first-ever as a full-time All Star in the state of Tennessee, bumped Reutzel’s 2020 win tally to six during All Star Circuit of Champions competition, continuing his chase toward a third consecutive Series title.

Eliason, who led the first 23 laps before losing the top spot to Reutzel, held on to finish second at Volunteer on Saturday night, followed by Nashville’s Paul McMahan and three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Tony Stewart.

“Everyone always talks about how good their team is, but I have the best team in the pit area. This was definitely a tough night,” Aaron Reutzel boasted in Volunteer Speedway victory lane, backed by Folkens Brothers Trucking, Fischer Body Shop, Ti22, and Hollywood Blasting. “We had to do so much tonight, but they never gave up and continued to work hard no matter what was thrown at them. They proved why we won the championship the last two years. My team won this race tonight.”

Utilizing the outside-front row starting spot, Visalia, California’s Cory Eliason jumped to the early advantage, quickly driving away from Paul McMahan, Sye Lynch and Tony Stewart. In fact, Eliason’s only challenge during the first 15 laps of the 30-lap contest was in the form of lapped traffic, which came into play for the first time on lap nine. At the time, Reutzel was battling in the fifth position, eventually earning a spot over Stewart to claim fourth on lap 13. Two circuits later, Reutzel was on the move again, this time working by the Pete Grove-owned entry occupied by Sye Lynch.

Working the very topside of turns one and two, and sneaking through the middle and very bottom of turns three and four, Reutzel powered his way around McMahan to take second on lap 20, this time using a slide job between turns one and two to secure the position.

Despite Eliason’s attempt to escape in traffic, Reutzel’s momentum was too powerful to overcome, as the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports entry cut the near-straightaway lead to less than a car length by lap 22. One circuit later, Reutzel made his first bid for the lead, and although the slider did not stick, a slider the following lap would, driving by Eliason at the exit of turn two on lap 24.

The main event’s first and only caution appeared on lap 29 forcing the aforementioned green-white-checkered finish.

“You could only drive into the corner so hard above the cushion because you would just slide to the fence,” Reutzel continued. “There was only one piece of moisture in that whole corner and that was right along the bottom. When I went in and turned down, I could get a good run down the front stretch. I just kept digging at it and digging at it and I was able to make up some time on people. We were able to track down (Eliason) without a caution and that’s just a statement of how good we were.”

“We were good in one and two, but we struggled in three and four. That’s where Aaron (Reutzel) beat us,” Cory Eliason said, driver of Rudeen Racing No. 26. “He was able to carry momentum a lot better than I could. We are getting a lot closer to where we need to be. This kinda happened to me in Australia where I finished on the podium twelve or so times in a row before I finally won one. Sometimes finishing second can get frustrating. Hats off to my team. We were fast all night.”

As an added bonus for Reutzel, his feature performance also secured the evening’s Hercules Tires Hard Charger Award.

Anthony Macri outruns field in Port Royal’s Keith Kauffman Classic for first-ever All Star victory

PORT ROYAL, Pa. (June 24, 2020) - For the first time in his young career, Dillsburg, Pennsylvania’s Anthony Macri is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, doing so, in unbelievable form, during Port Royal Speedway’s annual Keith Kauffman Classic on Wednesday, June 24. The victory, earning Macri $6,000 in the process, was accomplished in flawless fashion, eventually outrunning the entire field, including a late-charging Kyle Larson, by just under four seconds.

Macri started from the pole position and led every circuit of the 30-lap main event, navigating through waves of intense traffic with ease, and in certain periods, separated himself from the field by upwards of four lapped cars.

“I don’t even know what to say,” Anthony Macri said in victory lane, driver of the Macri Concrete/J&S Fabrication/No. 39M sprint car. “We threw some stuff at (the car) for the dash and we weren’t even sure it was going to work, but clearly it showed that it worked in the dash. So all we did was add some fuel and let her eat in the feature.”

Although imposing no threat on Macri, Kyle Larson, Danny Dietrich, Aaron Reutzel, Brent Marks, and Brock Zearfoss all battled within the top-five over the course of the Keith Kauffman contest, swapping positions on several occasions. It was not until a caution on lap 22, brought out for a slowing Zearfoss, that allowed a few of the teams to find their true finishing potential. In fact, the ensuing restart propelled Larson from fourth to second, banging the boards on the top edge of the speedway to drive around Dietrich and Reutzel on laps 24 and 25, respectively.

A final lap maneuver by Dietrich to get around Reutzel allowed the Gettysburg-native to claim third at the line, followed by Reutzel and Brent Marks.

The All Star triumph included, Macri has now won three-in-a-row at the Port Royal ‘Speed Palace.’

“My team has given me a great car over the last few weeks. I could put the car wherever I wanted,” Macri continued, who earned his pole position by way of dash victory; he started fifth. “I know the fast lane is normally the top of turns one and two, and it normally cleans off in turns three and four on the bottom. After about 15 laps, I pretty much killed my tires. I was actually on defensive mode for a little while just hoping they weren’t going to blow by me. I was trying to push hard through traffic, but I was happy to see the yellows just so I could have some clean air. I knew I could drive the car as hard as I could.

“The month we spent out on the road this year really changed me as a driver. I came back here and I’m ready to win.”

What’s Next:
Diving deep into the heart of Dixie, the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will continue their 2020 championship campaign with a doubleheader on the highbanks of Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee, on Saturday and Sunday, June 27-28. Dubbed the Food City presents the Tennessee Sprint Car Nationals, the Bulls Gap invasion will feature back-to-back $5,000-to-win main events, also awarding points toward the season-ending championship purse.

Although the Tennessee Sprint Car Nationals visit will be a first during Tony Stewart’s tenure as owner of the All Stars, it is certainly not the first stop in Series history, most recently invading the northern Tennessee facility on March 19-20, 2010, with Joey Saldana and Jason Meyers each earning feature wins.

Dominic Scelzi scores first-ever All Star victory during Thunder Through The Plains finale at Chatham Speedway

CHATHAM, La. (June 14, 2020) - Just 24 hours following his near-tie for second-place at Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, eventually resolved over a friendly game of rock-paper-scissors with Rudeen Racing’s Cory Eliason, Fresno, California’s Dominic Scelzi did two spots better on Sunday evening and scored a first-ever Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory during the Cometic Gasket Thunder Through The Plains presented by Hercules Tire finale at Chatham Speedway in Chatham, Louisiana.

Including his win, Scelzi ended the eight-race Thunder Through The Plains schedule with five top-five finishes.

“I’ll tell you what man, this is big for me. We’ve really been hitting our strides the last couple of nights and it’s really shown,” Dominic Scelzi said, driver of the SE Inc./Red Rose Transportation/No. 41S sprint car. “Jimmy, Marty, Aaron, Brandon; these guys have really busted their asses this week, going to a bunch of new places we’ve never been to before. I’m not even sure I ever made an All Star dash before this week. For me, this is every bit as big as winning the World Challenge. I have one more mark to add to my resume and that’s an Outlaw win. Hopefully we can do that real soon.”

The $5,000 triumph was accomplished in exciting fashion, first working underneath fellow California-native and race leader, Justin Sanders, at the exit of turn four with eight laps complete, then surviving multiple single-file restarts before holding off two-time All Star champion and Kilgore winner, Aaron Reutzel, in a drag race to the final checkers. The drag race, separated by a mere-.2 seconds, was initiated by a caution and a restart with two circuits remaining.

Justin Sanders, who actually retook command from Scelzi for a single circuit on lap 27, doing so by using the bottom groove to sneak below the familiar No. 41s at the exit of turn four, held on to finish third at Chatham, followed by Zeb Wise and Paul McMahan.

“We were lucky to hang on those last two laps, especially with Aaron (Reutzel) breathing down our neck,” Scelzi continued. “Getting a little love tap at the end from Aaron, and Paul (McMahan) and everyone giving me a thumbs-up, it just goes to show how big of a following and friends I have in this sport. I haven’t won a lot of races, but this is a big one. I just want to thank the big man upstairs. I’m going to get really drunk tonight.”

What’s Next:

Aaron Reutzel earns 30th-career All Star victory during visit to Lonestar Speedway

KILGORE, Texas (June 13, 2020) - Performing in true championship form, two-time and defending Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 titlist, Aaron Reutzel, put on an impressive performance on Saturday evening during his visit to Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, ultimately capping the Cometic Gasket Thunder Through The Plains presented by Hercules Tires program with a main event victory, the 30th Series win of his career and scoring $5,000 in the process. Padding the stat book, the All Star triumph was a first in his home state of Texas, decimating the field after taking command on lap 10 and crossing under the final checkers by a margin of victory just shy of four seconds.

The Lonestar Speedway win resulted in Reutzel’s second trip to victory lane during the Thunder Through The Plains campaign, earning the first over Kyle Larson during a barn burner at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Oklahoma, on Friday, June 5.

“The last couple of starts have been frustrating, I’m not going to lie. It’s really taken a toll on me. I feel like we’ve been good enough to be a podium car every night, we’ve just had a lot of dumb stuff happen. But my guys never gave up and they continue to do a phenomenal job,” Aaron Reutzel said, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/Folkens Brothers Trucking/Fischer Body Shop/Hollywood Blasting & Coating/No. 87 sprint car. “I hate to say that only our team works their butts off because every team out here works their butts off. We’ve been at the track every night for the past ten nights. Tonight, it just all finally worked out for us. It certainly wouldn’t be possible with my guys, Jim Bob and Dylan, and all of our great partners.”

Lining up fourth on the 30-lap grid by way of dash result, it did not take long for Reutzel to battle his way toward the front, already powering into second by the time the first two laps were checked off the counter. At the time, Cory Eliason maintained the race lead, utilizing the pole position to earn the top spot after the initial start.

By lap nine, Eliason found himself in traffic, nearly getting caught up with a slower car which allowed Reutzel to close-in on the Rudeen Racing entry. The very next circuit, Reutzel made his move, first pulling even with Eliason through turns one and two, all before driving by his fellow All Star full-timer as the pair raced off of turn four. From that point on, it was the ‘Aaron Reutzel Show,’ picking off slower cars one at a time with ease before earning his fifth All Star Circuit of Champions victory of the 2020 season.

“I’m just trying to represent the great state of Texas the best that I can,” an elated Aaron Reutzel continued, followed by an immediate cheer from the crowd. “To get a win in front of this awesome crowd is phenomenal. I’m glad I could pull it off for my fellow Texans.”

Although Reutzel went on to be unchallenged, Visalia, California’s Cory Eliason was not so fortunate, eventually feeling pressure from third row starter Dominic Scelzi during the closing circuits. Despite failing to get by Eliason, Scelzi certainly made things exciting and fell short of the runner-up spot by less than a ten-thousandths of a second. Refusing to admit he was defeated on-track, Scelzi proceeded to challenge Eliason to a rock-paper-scissors battle in the pit area after the feature was checkered; the result was a tie.

Justin Sanders finished fourth at Lonestar Speedway, followed by the ‘Jonestown Jet’ Brock Zearfoss.

Danny Dietrich leads all 30 to score All Star victory at Monarch Motor Speedway

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (June 12, 2020) - Improving one position over his Thursday night result at Southern Oklahoma Speedway, ‘Double-D’ Danny Dietrich nearly swept the entire evening program on Friday night at Monarch Motor Speedway, first earning victories during heat race and dash competition, then capping the Cometic Gasket Thunder Through The Plains presented by Hercules Tires showcase by leading all 30 circuits during the evening’s main event and scoring $5,000 in the process. For Dietrich, the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory was his first of the season, simultaneously increasing his career All Star win total to 12.

“My goal coming down here was to win at least one of these races. We were pretty close last night, so to get it done here tonight is pretty awesome,” Danny Dietrich said, driver of the Gary Kauffman Racing/Weikert’s Livestock/Sandoe’s Fruit Market’/Pace Performance/Big Cove Whitetail Trophy Hunts/Drop Of Ink Tattoo/Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC/Self Made/No. 48 sprint car. “It has been a pretty demanding week. Getting a win with the All Stars makes the work and the heat totally worth it. Hopefully we get to come back to this place and do it again next year.”

Earning the pole position by way of dash win, Danny Dietrich’s route to Monarch Motor Speedway victory lane was relatively unchallenged, first dealing with a pair of opening lap stoppages before the race could officially commence.

Immediately choosing the cushion over the bottom groove, Dietrich jumped to the early advantage, keeping fellow front row starter Cory Eliason at bay as the duo raced beyond the flagstand to complete the opening lap.

Continuing to zing the top of the speedway, Dietrich and Eliason met traffic for the first time on lap 12, thus allowing Eliason to close the gap on Dietrich ever so slightly. Traffic continued to be a factor over the next several circuits, ultimately intensifying with cars stacked two and three wide by lap 21. Although Dietrich did his best to lose Eliason among the slower cars, the driver of the Rudeen Racing entry held on and kept pace with the Gettysburg-native, driving himself within a few car lengths of Dietrich’s back bumper.

Eventually finding his way back to clean air, Dietrich quickly picked up the pace and sailed home, increasing his lead to just shy of three seconds by the time the final checkers waved.

Besides the pair of red flag incidents on the opening lap, the first for Premier Motorsports’ Justin Peck and the second for a multi-car pileup on the front straightaway, the evening’s 30-lapper would go on to be caution free.

“I just want to thank my car owner, Gary Kauffman, for allowing this trip to happen. There are a lot of great people who support this race team and we wouldn’t be in this position without them,” Dietrich continued. “We still have two nights to go, so hopefully we can do this again and give our fans back home something to be even more proud of.”

Cory Eliason would finish second at Monarch Motor Speedway, followed by Southern Oklahoma winner Brock Zearfoss, Roger Crockett, and Dominic Scelzi.

Brock Zearfoss bests field at Southern Oklahoma Speedway for first All Star victory of 2020

ARDMORE, Okla. (June 12, 2020) - For the first time in 2020, and for the fourth time in his career, the ‘Jonestown Jet’ Brock Zearfoss is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, this time reigning supreme at Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Oklahoma, during Cometic Gasket Thunder Through The Plains presented by Hercules Tires action on June 11. Utilizing the outside-pole position, Zearfoss took command for the first time on lap 15 and never looked back, zinging his preferred line around the very topside of the speedway for a $5,000 top prize.

A bit of sweet redemption for the Jonestown, Pennsylvania-based race team, Zearfoss was forced to overcome a mechanical malfunction during qualifying time trials at Devil’s Bowl Speedway before finishing eighth during main event action. Just 24 hours later, Brock Zearfoss and Brock Zearfoss Racing are standing in victory lane.

“This just goes to show how badass my team is. They never stop digging. Even after getting banged up yesterday during qualifying, they had the spare car down before they even towed me off the track,” Brock Zearfoss said, driver of the Brock Zearfoss Racing/Moose’s LZ Bar & Grill/Heavy Equipment, Loaders & Parts Inc./C&D Rigging Inc./BAPS Auto Paints & Supply/No. 3Z sprint car. “A lot of other teams helped us get ready for that heat race. It was nice to salvage the night for an eighth-place finish, but this feels a lot better.”

Before Zearfoss drove his way to the top spot on lap 15, the battle for the lead was perpetual, first held by pole-sitter and full-time All Star, Skylar Gee, for the first five circuits. A caution on lap six would spell bad news for the Canadian hotshot, eventually losing command to Fresno, California’s Dominic Scelzi. The lap six restart would also spell bad news for Zearfoss, who actually slipped back three spots by the time the frontrunners completed the sixth circuit. Zearfoss was racing in the second spot at the time of the caution.

A trio of upcoming caution periods, including a red flag scenario, would give Zearfoss a chance to recover his slip, ultimately battling back to second by lap 11. The ensuing restart after a lap 15 caution is when the ‘Jonestown Jet’ made his winning move, quickly scooting by Scelzi’s No. 41S to lead the circuit.

Despite another four-pack of caution flags, one of which resulting in an open red to allow teams the opportunity to add fuel, and one with just two circuits remaining, Zearfoss held strong and remained untouchable, quickly escaping to a near-straightaway lead as the white flag waved.

“I was pretty mad at myself early on when I lost those three spots. That red flag gave me some time to stew on things a little bit. I knew I was going to have to get up on the wheel,” Zearfoss continued. “I just can’t say enough about my team. Noisey, Tye, and everyone else involved in this deal; they put their heart and soul into this race team. I’m very blessed to be in the position that I’m in. Hopefully we put on a good show for everyone tonight.”

Danny Dietrich powered home second after starting eighth on the grid, followed by Dominic Scelzi, Cory Eliason, and an 11th-starting Justin Sanders.
