Kyle Larson claims Sharon’s Salute to the Troops Speedweek finale; Aaron Reutzel wins 2020 Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (July 13, 2020) - For the third time during Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires, and for the seventh time in 2020, Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, doing so during Justin Snyder’s Salute to the Troops Speedweek finale at Sharon Speedway on Sunday, July 12. ‘Yung Money’ led the final 21 circuits to claim the $6,000 payday, eventually holding off a late surge by two-time and defending All Star champion, Aaron Reutzel.

Skylar Gee, who started from the pole position after winning the first of two All Star dashes, led the first several circuits of the 30-lap contest before losing command to the familiar No. 57. Hard contact with the outside retaining wall just before the flagstand on lap nine resulted in a flat right-rear tire forcing the Leduc, Alberta, Canada-native to retire, ultimately allowing Larson to inherit the top spot. At the time, Reutzel was battling in the third position, followed by Cory Eliason and Dave Blaney.

Restarting on the point, Larson shot out of a cannon, driving off on a very narrow cushion with Reutzel and Eliason still in tow. Although a caution on lap 16 would stack the field and keep Larson in clean air and out of traffic longer, Reutzel eventually chipped away at Larson’s near-two second advantage and powered within just a few car lengths, utilizing a wall tap by Larson on lap 27 and a three-wide pack of lappers to his advantage. A last minute slider by Larson on lap 29 to put a lapped car between himself and Reutzel sealed the deal for the Paul Silva-owned entry.

“I hit the wall and kinda got stuck in it, so I figured I was going to get a flat tire or something. I was just trying to stay calm. I guess I lost focus a little bit right there,” Kyle Larson said of his brush with the wall, driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Durst/Lucas Oil/Tarlton and Sons/No. 57 sprint car. “I knew Aaron (Reutzel) was probably running pretty hard behind me. I didn’t know where he was, but I figured he was going to be right there. I felt like I hadn’t made any mistakes up until that point, but you never know where they’re at.

“This place is awesome,” Larson continued. “Especially when it gets glass slick to the fence. I thought I could maybe shortcut three and four, but I wasn’t as good as what Skylar (Gee) was up against the wall. Once I got the lead, I knew I needed to commit up there as long as I didn’t see Aaron poke to my inside. I never really saw his nose other than that restart.

“I really enjoy coming to Ohio and running Ohio Speedweek. A big thanks to all of the fans for coming out and supporting your local dirt track racing.”

Reutzel held on to finish second on Sunday evening, solidifying a first-ever Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires speedweek championship. The overall Speedweek title earned the two-time All Star champion and Clute, Texas-native a $4,000 payday.

“We’ve been consistent, so we’ve definitely accomplished that, but I feel like we need to get back on the winning part. If we keep doing what we are doing, the wins will come. Or if we can get Kyle (Larson) to go away, the wins will come. He’s just unreal.” Aaron Reutzel said, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/Fischer Body Shop/Hollywood Coating and Blasting/Folkens Brothers Trucking/No. 87 sprint car. “To watch him run that close to the wall and make contact and keep going is just crazy. I think I needed a caution-free run and additional traffic if I was going to get by Larson. I think I was a little better than he was in those long runs.

“A big thanks to everyone who came out. It was a fun week, but we still have more work to do.”

Cale Conley wins Lou Blaney Memorial for first-ever All Star victory

HARTFORD, Ohio (July 12, 2020) - Officially etching his name into the Series’ history book, Vienna, West Virginia’s Cale Conley is now an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, accomplishing his storied feat during Lou Blaney Memorial competition at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, on Saturday, July 11. The win, Conley’s seventh top-ten finish of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires, was worth $7,500.

Although forced to withstand pressure from the likes of Rico Abreu, Brock Zearfoss and Cory Eliason during the 30-lap contest, Conley would prevail, eventually leading every lap while remaining patient on an ultra-quick and choppy surface that proved relentless for much of the field. In total, eight caution periods were recorded inducing three red flag stoppages, one for fuel on lap 19.

Conley’s campaign at the front of the field commenced right from the drop of the initial green, getting the early jump over fellow front row starter, Brock Zearfoss, as well as Rico Abreu and Gerard McIntyre. It would not take long for the leaders to reach the back of the field, already getting trapped behind slower cars on lap four. A caution on lap five, and again on lap six, would prove to save the day for Conley, negating any chance for a battle in traffic on a narrow groove.

A similar situation would arise on lap 11, and again on lap 18, as cautions would end the potential for a battle among slower cars. Still in command, Conley’s biggest threat occurred after a red flag incident on lap 26, ultimately giving St. Helena, California’s Rico Abreu and Rudeen Racing’s Cory Eliason an opportunity to pounce with only five circuits remaining. Fortunately for Conley, a battle between Eliason and Abreu would break out allowing the West Virginian to escape unscathed in clean air.

Eliason would get by Abreu to secure second on the final circuit, followed by Abreu, Tim Shaffer and a hard-charging Danny Dietrich, who advanced 12 spots to finish fifth.

Brock Zearfoss, who was racing in the runner-up spot at the time, was the reason for the red flag stoppage on lap 26, as right-front suspension damage caused the familiar No. 3Z to dig itself in and end up upside-down in turn two; Zearfoss walked away from the incident.

“That was a long race,” Conely said out of breath in Sharon Speedway victory lane, driver of the Ravici Racing No. 3C. “It was hot out there and I was just ready to see the laps wind down. It took us a while, but I’m so happy to win here during the Lou Blaney Memorial. It’s such a special night for my wife’s family. Our little boy’s name is Louie, so this is really cool. To get my first All Star win in front of such an awesome crowd is cool. I was just asking God on those restarts to help me focus because I had some really good guys behind me. I was just trying to hang on for dear life.

“This race car was so good, and it’s the first night out for this car; it’s a brand new car,” Conley continued, who is married to the granddaughter of Lou Blaney, Dave Blaney’s daughter, Emma. “We tore one up last night at Portsmouth, so we had to put together a whole new car. That just goes to show how lucky I am to get to work with Brian Kemenah. This is just unreal. Brian always finds ways to make my job really easy. I really can’t show how appreciative I really am.”

Kyle Larson scores Dean Knittel Memorial payday at Portsmouth Raceway Park

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (July 11, 2020) - ‘Yung Money’ Kyle Larson was certainly ‘money’ on Friday night during the annual Dean Knittel Memorial at Portsmouth Raceway Park, not only scoring his second Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires main event win in four tries, but the Elk Grove, California-native secured $15,554 in the process, simultaneously bumping his 2020 Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 season win count to six.

Starting from the pole position by way of dash result, Larson was nearly untouchable during the 30-lap contest, escaping to a hefty advantage right from the drop of the green flag. The driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Tarlton and Sons/Lucas Oil/Durst/Finley Farms/No. 57 sprint car reached slower cars by lap five, and although a few near-close calls with lapped traffic may have forced Larson to tap the brake pedal, his momentum never shifted, still placing two to three lapped cars between himself and second-place running Aaron Reutzel.

The main event’s first and only caution, occurring with five laps remaining, did give Reutzel an opportunity to restart on the back bumper of Larson, but it did not matter. The Clute, Texas-native was forced to settle for second, followed by Brock Zearfoss, Shane Stewart, and Cole Duncan.

With all bonuses considered, Kyle Larson collected upwards of $18,000 at Portsmouth, as extra money was awarded for his respective dash victory, as well as his overall fast time during qualifying time trials and for leading lap 15 during the 30-lap feature.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of pace you set, Aaron (Reutzel) seems to find a way to match what you’re doing, so I was trying to go as hard as I could,” Kyle Larson said in Portsmouth victory lane. “It was good to hold on and get another big payday.

“I was hoping we weren’t going to catch traffic again, but we ended up reaching the back anyhow,” Larson said of his restart with five laps remaining. “But what makes these cars fun is that we don’t have mirrors, so it makes you a little nervous of what’s going on behind you. Just another great race car. And thanks to all of you who help out on this car. We certainly couldn’t do it without each and every one of you. And thanks to all of you fans. This place is really neat and I’m glad I got the chance to race here.”

Rico Abreu goes wire-to-wire at Muskingum County Speedway for first All Star victory of 2020​

DRESDEN, Ohio (July 9, 2020) - Snapping an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 winless streak that dates back to Atomic Speedway on August 25, 2017, St. Helena, California’s Rico Abreu demolished the field on Thursday evening at Muskingum County Speedway, eventually leading all 30 circuits from the pole position to score night six of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires.

Abreu, driver of the Rico Abreu/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Abreu Vineyards/Lucas Oil Products/Curb Records/Self Made Racing/Dancer Logistics/No. 24 sprint car, was just shy of perfect during his visit to the Dresden, Ohio, highbanks with his only defeat during the entire program coming in the form of a runner-up performance during his respective heat race. The now eight-time All Star Circuit of Champions feature winner, two of which occurring during Ohio Sprint Speedweek, set the fastest qualifying time in his respective group of qualifiers, and won the first of two dashes, ultimately setting up his pole position.

Eventually escaping to a comfortable margin of victory that reached nearly a full straightaway, Abreu did encounter some pressure during the non-stop 30-lap contest, most of which in the form of lapped traffic. Although reaching slower cars by lap seven, it was not until lap 12 when things started to really bunch up in front of the familiar No. 24. The high speed roadblock allowed fellow frontrunners Aaron Reutzel and Shane Stewart to close the lead gap, all within just a few car lengths by lap 15.

Although intense for a moment, the pressure faded just as rapidly as it started, as Abreu was able to patiently navigate slower cars and padd his lead to a pair of lappers by lap 22.

“Patience was keen there when we got to lapped traffic. You got guys like Aaron Reutzel, Shane Stewart, Kyle Larson behind you; you gotta really hustle it,” an elated Rico Abreu said in victory lane. “My car had a really good right rear squeeze to it, so I could carry a lot of momentum to the center of the corner then just kinda back everything up getting off. My guys did a phenomenal job. They worked all night long and made little tweaks every time we got off of the track. It’s all based on communication with them and making sure you’re giving them the right feedback. I feel like we hit all of our steps tonight.

“A big thanks to all of the fans for coming out tonight. It’s a Thursday night, so it’s great to see a healthy crowd. I’m looking forward to racing the rest of the week with the All Stars. It’s a lot of fun getting to race with them.”

Shane Stewart worked his way around Aaron Reutzel to claim second with two laps remaining. Reutzel, the current Ohio Sprint Speedweek points leader, maintained third at the final checkers, followed by Kyle Larson and Josh Baughman.

Kyle Larson scores Ohio Sprint Speedweek victory at Brushcreek Motorsports Complex

PEEBLES, Ohio (July 8, 2020) - Forced to settle with a hard charging performance at Wayne County Speedway after getting involved in a tangle during his respective heat race, ultimately rallying from 21st to sixth in 30 green flag laps, Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson bounced back on Wednesday night at Brushcreek Motorsports Park and leveled the field during night five of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires, eventually leading 26 laps to claim a 14th-career Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory worth $5,000.

Lining up sixth on the main event grid, it was apparent from the start that Larson’s pace was unrivaled, utilizing his initial jump to climb three spots before crossing by the flagstand for the first time. By lap three, ‘Yung Money’ was powering by Eliason for second, next setting his aim on Vienna, West Virginia’s Cale Conley. Just two circuits later, Larson was in command, sneaking under Conley’s No. 3C as the pair raced through turns one and two.

From that point forward, it was all Kyle Larson at the top of the charts, easily navigating through traffic before escaping to a near-five second advantage at the end of 30 non-stop laps.

“I watched a little bit of video, but that was it,” said first-time Brushcreek competitor, Kyle Larson, driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Finley Farms/Tarlton and Sons/Durst/Lucas Oil/No. 57 sprint car. “It was a unique race track, for sure. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a track quite like it.

“My car was really good. I could run where everyone else wasn’t,” Larson continued. “All of the lapped cars were either on the bottom or the top, so I could stay relaxed knowing that I would have a lane open when I got to lapped cars. I started to get a little stressed late in the race. When you’re the leader, you never know where second and third place are. I knew (Reutzel) and (Abreu) would be there somewhere. There were some lappers that showed me their nose on the bottom. You just have to focus on what’s ahead and keep moving forward.”

Rico Abreu made a late charge to finish second at Brushcreek Motorsports Park, followed by two-time and defending All Star champion, Aaron Reutzel, Cale Conley, and polesitter, Cory Eliason. Abreu faded as far back as fifth before making the surge to second in the final two circuits.
