Jimmy Phelps Untouchable at Sharon Speedway
Takes home first series win of the season

HARTFORD, O.H. - July 21, 2016 - Jimmy Phelps proved that his J&B Installations, Inc. No. 98h team had what it took as he was untouchable in the return of the Super DIRTcar SeriesBig-Block Modifieds 100-lap feature at Sharon Speedway.

"I had no idea but I got nervous there in the end with all of those yellows happening with twenty to go," Phelps said in victory lane. "The tires started to cool off and I didn't know how good the guys were behind me. We started slip-sliding around there but we've been good here since we unloaded today."

Ryan Watt and Ryan Susice were the ones to bring the field to the green. Watt's pole position was short lived as Susice took the lead by the time they scored lap one.

Susice used the outside cushion to his advantage as Watt hugged the bottom in second place.

By lap 13 fifth place starter, Phelps, passed Matt Sheppard for third position.

On lap 25 the scoreboard saw Watt, Sheppard, Phelps, Susice, and Brett Hearn as the top five. Watt caught the back end of the field on lap 31.

On a lap 46 restart Watt chose the inside lane with Phelps restarting on the outside in second. Phelps charged into turn one on the topside and drove passed Watt for the lead coming out of turn two.

Billy Decker, who started in 10th, took advantage on the lap 65 restart as he passed Watt for second place. On lap 75 the scoreboard saw Phelps, Decker, Watt, Hearn, and Dave Blaney as the top five.

The biggest caution of the night was brought out with just four laps to go as everyone scattered when Eric Rudolph and Blaney got together in turns three and four running fifth and sixth as Rudolph dove below Blaney, contact was made as Rudolph's right rear tore apart sending Blaney sideways coming out of turn four. Jimmy Horton and Larry Wight got collected up in the middle of it causing all four to go to pits.

The final restart of the night saw the field go single file as Decker moved to the outside going into turn one and shot to the bottom coming out of turn two to try and pass Phelps for the top position. Decker made the move but just couldn't get the job done as Phelps pulled away.

It was Jimmy Phelps who took the checkered for his first series win of the season over Decker, Watt, Hearn, and Ward. His last series win came in August 2015 at Albany-Saratoga in Malta, N.Y.

"I can't thank Curt and Al and everybody at Mohawk and HBR enough. We had a good race and we just have to keep digging to prove it," Phelps said.

"I couldn't make any mistakes, the track got real narrow there especially in one and two. Fortunately we got out front and had good track position. We had a real good restart on the outside and passed the 14 on the outside. That was the real key to the deal."

The cautions are what Decker had hoped for but just couldn't make it happen.

"We had a different tire on than Phelps did and he got rolling pretty good. I was pretty good on those restarts," Decker said. "I was starting to fade but was then coming through a bit so I liked all of those cautions because I could pass all of those cars for a lap or two. The last restart I tried to cut across, maybe if I stayed to the outside of him I could have gave him a shot but he was really good."

For pole-starter Ryan Watt, the third place run was his best finish with the series.

"That's my best run we had with the series. Williams Grove we had a good run going there but my car was getting tighter and tighter and I made a mistake and got a left front flat. We may have had a top five," Watt said. "I don't get a chance to come up here and run with these guys very often and now we know we can do it. I just wish it wasn't such a far ride to go."

Race Notes: Prior to Phelps' win at Sharon Speedway he only had three top five's out of 10 series races. 51 cars attempted to qualify and 32 cars started the field. The top two points leaders, Matt Sheppard and Stewart Friesen, didn't finish in the a-main. Friesen's suspension broke as he pulled into the pits on lap nine. Sheppard's car overheated as he pulled into the pits on lap 47. The fastest overall in time trials was Jimmy Phelps with a 16.375.

The Super DIRTcar Series returns to action in Quebec, Canada on Monday, July 25 at Granby and on Tuesday at Drummond.

Stewart Friesen Wins Wild Race at Cornwall Motor Speedway
Captures first Super DIRTcar series win of the year

CORNWALL, Ont. - June 27, 2016 - Stewart Friesen battled to a wild first win of the season Sunday night as the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds took on Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway.

Friesen, who took the lead on the initial start from pole-sitter Max McLaughlin, was able to capture the Mel Valade Backhoe Service 100 lapper, but not without a hard fight by fourth-place starter, Matt Sheppard.

"What a racecar," Friesen said in victory lane. "Those cautions drive me crazy. When you pass Matt Sheppard back, that's really something. He's on top of his game right now."

The initial start saw Friesen pulling away from the pack on the topside of the track while McLaughlin and Sheppard battled for second position.

It didn't take long for Friesen to find himself in traffic as he caught the back of the pack by lap 12. He got bottled up on the top of the speedway and Sheppard went to the bottom of the exit of turn four to snatch the lead away.

Friesen was able to take back the lead but only to be halted by a yellow.

By lap 30, Brett Hearn battled McLaughlin for third place.

The track was starting to slick off by lap 40 as Friesen and Sheppard began to pull away from the field.

Once again Friesen closed in on lap traffic by lap 39. Friesen went in high in turns one and two which opened the door for Sheppard to pass Friesen on the bottom. Friesen came back through the middle, three wide in lap traffic to take back the lead

By lap 45, the scoreboard showed Friesen, Sheppard, Hearn, Johnson, and Britten as the top five. Danny Johnson was up to fourth after starting in eleventh.

All eyes were on Friesen and Sheppard as they kept swapping lines, battling for the top position.

Chris Raabe was showing a late race charge as he ran down Hearn and passed him for the fourth spot on lap 69.

The fifth caution of the night was necessary on lap 75 after Britten and Williamson, both running in the top 10, got into a tangle on the track.

The action resumed again on lap 75 as Sheppard tried to crisscross and slide to the top coming out of turn two but Friesen was able to hold him off and pull away on the backstretch with the lead. Friesen then muscled his way around the top of the track and pulled away with a five-car lead.

The sixth caution of the night was brought out. On the restart Johnson tried to pass Sheppard on the bottom but Sheppard was able to squeeze Johnson out.

As the battle behind the leader grew strong, Friesen was in his own race. He was consistent, running the top in one and two and right around the bottom in three and four.

The last caution of the night flew on lap 88. It was a single file restart as Johnson tried the inside lane to pass by Sheppard but Sheppard made sure to come back down on him to close this out.

Sheppard tried his hardest to pull Friesen on the top side and cut down across to the inside. They were running side-by-side for the lead.

On lap 97, as lapped traffic got thicker, Friesen started to pull away on the top side of the track as that same traffic held Sheppard up on the bottom. Friesen shot to the outside corner number four and drove away to win his first Super DIRTcar Series event of the year.

"We were a little tight early," said Friesen. "Our crew was great tonight though. Halmar International team is awesome. They give me everything I need. We do a lot of racing and we're starting to pick it up a bit."

Matt Sheppard was in high spirits over his battle between Friesen for the lead.

"I hope the fans got their money's worth," said Sheppard. "I think he had the best car tonight. I could stay with him but he was able to pull away. Next thing you know I thought I was able to steal this from him. I probably should have stayed on the top and blocked but it is what it is. He had the better car and he won tonight."

The top ten respectively were Friesen, Sheppard, Johnson, Raabe, Hearn, Cozze, Decker, Fuller, McLaughlin, Clair.

Forty-four Modifieds attempted to qualify for the Mel Valade Backhoe Service 100 lapper. Thirty cars started the field. Eight cautions were brought out during the feature. Larry Wight set fastest time in time trials with a 13.136. Chris Raabe was the only small block to finish in the top-five.

The Big-Block Modifieds return to action this Tuesday, June 28, at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, the 4/10 semi-banked clay oval for Brett Hearn's The Big Show 8 with Kenny Wallace. The eighth annual event makes its fifth appearance at Albany-Saratoga. Decker and Jimmy Phelps both have two wins at the event with Bobby Varin, Hearn, and Johnson the other drivers to have claimed wins over the years.
