NAPA AUTO PARTS THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES OPENS 26TH SEASON . . . . . . .
102 CARS TAKE PART IN GRANDVIEW THUNDER 5-25’S, VICTORIES FALL TO STRUNK, BROWN, GILMORE, BUCKWALTER & STOUGH SUNDAY NIGHT AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
Sunday night at the Grandview Speedway the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series opened their twenty-sixth season with the Grandview Thunder features only program. The five twenty-five lap feature events saw Robert Stough take the win in the twenty-five lap Legends feature as Tim Buckwalter took the win in the ARDC midget feature as Kenny Gilmore won the Sportsman feature. David Brown was the winner of the TSRS Sprint feature as Jeff Strunk made the winning pass off the final turn on the last lap to win the twenty-five lap Modified feature over Doug Manmiller. A total of one hundred and two race cars took part in the five division racing program.
The twenty-five lap Legends feature opened the racing program at the one-third mile oval with Robert Stough setting the early pace. By lap eleven, Stough had his hands full with Chad Earnst and Jason Rochelle now challenging for the lead On lap thirteen, Earnst took the lead and set the pace for two laps. Stough worked his way back to the top spot on lap twenty-one with Jason Fuhrman and Bill Diehl in the hunt. The top five ran under a blanket with Stough taking the win over Bill Diehl, Jason Fuhman, Donnie Leiby and Nate Renfro,
The ARDC Midgets were called to the track for the second feature of the night. Tommy Kunsman Jr set the pace for the first two laps with PJ Gargiulo taking the lead on lap three. Tim Buckwalter entered the picture and took the lead on lap five. Once on top, Buckwalter appeared to be on his way to victory but Nick Wean had other thoughts which included taking that win for himself. At the halfway point, Buckwalter, Wean PJ Gargiulo, Danny Stratton and Steve Drevicki made up the top five.
By lap sixteen, there was a three car battle for the lead between Buckwalter, Wean and Gargiulo. Wean continued to apply pressure in the final laps and as the field passed the line on lap twenty-one, Wean was challenging for the lead. As the laps ticked by, Wean again reeled in the leader and with the white flag waiving, he was looking to make one more challenge for the win. Coming off turn four with the checker flag waiving, race leader Tim Buckwalter and Nick Wean tangled with both cars spinning, third place runner PJ Gargiulo now made a move for the lead. Buckwalter managed to get his midget going in the right and was heading to the wire as Gargiulo was in the hunt. As the checker flag fell, Buckwatler pulled out the win with Gargiulo second, Nick Wean third and Danny Stratton third.
The Sportsman took over the speedway for their twenty-five laps feature with Mike Lisowski the front runner for the first two laps. By lap three, Jim Houseworth was the race leader with Brad Arnold quickly moving into contention. Kenny Gilmore was making a run to the front of the pack and on lap nine, he became the new race leader. Gilmore continued to set a torrid pace with Jim Houseworth now racing second with Craig Whitmoyer challenging in third. Whitmoyer moved into second on lap twenty and with just five laps remaining, he was chasing down Gilmore. Gilmore rallied home the winner over Whitmoyer, Brett Gilmore, Jim Housework and Paul Kline for the win.
The TSRS Sprints made their first appearance at a Thunder on the Hill event and young Ryan Stillwaggon led the first two laps with Tim Tanner taking the lead on lap three. David Brown was racing in second by lap five. By lap nine, Brown caught the leader and for the next three laps, they would race side-by-side for lead, but suddenly, Stillwaggon was back in the chase and challenging for the lead. On lap thirteen, Stillwaggon went to the front of the line to again take the lead. Stillwaggon had solid command of the top spot over David Brown and Tim Tanner. A late race red flag was now going to change the outcome of the race.
When green flag racing resumed, Stillwaggon was setting the pace but when exiting turn four, the leader spun displaying the yellow flag. Brown now sat on the pole with just two laps remaining. The race went green and David Brown ran to hide from the rest of the field taking the victory over Tim Tanner, Jeff Geiges, Karl Fryer and Scott Frack.
The night cap was the 25 lap Modified feature and this was also going to be a thriller. Mike Gular led the first lap with Jeff Strunk taking the lead on lap two. Once on top, it appeared that Strunk may have an easy ride. One thing all drivers learn, nothing comes easy at Grandview and this race was far from over. At the halfway mark, Strunk was cruising in the lead followed by Gular with Doug Manmiller inching in on the leader. Manmiller was on a mission and by lap nineteen, he not only caught Strunk, he offered his first challenge for the lead.
As the leaders passed the line on lap twenty, Manmiller was the new race leader with Strunk now doing the chasing. Strunk stayed close looking for a chase to regain the lead, then a yellow flag on lap twenty-four would determine the outcome of this race. The green flag fell and Manmiller took the high lane as Strunk dove to the bottom. The two leaders race side-by-side for the final lap. Exiting turn four, Strunk used the bottom and took the lead and the win off the final turn for a thrilling crowd pleasing finish. Strunk took the win over Manmiller, Jaren Umbenhauer, Danny Erb and Glenn Strunk.

RISLONE URC SPRINT SERIES
MACH1 $10,000 TO WIN NATIONAL OPEN FALLS TO AARON OTT SATURDAY NIGHT AT SELINSGROVE SPEEDWAY
Aaron Ott of East Berlin, PA caught Justin Barger on lap thirty-one then led the final four laps to pocket the $10,000 first place prize for winning the 35 lap MACH 1 360 Sprint Nationals Saturday night at the Selinsgrove Speedway. For Ott, this marked his third Rislone URC Sprint feature win of the season and his fifth career victory. Ott was thrilled in victory lane for this, the biggest win of his career. “I was gonna win even if I had to stuff it in the fence, fortunately, I didn’t have to do that”, said Ott who was elated as the camera’s were flashing.
Thirty-four cars took part in timed warm-ups to determined the starting line-up for the heat race events. Jason Shultz set fast time, turning the half-mile with a time of 17.444 or 109.296 mph. Each driver would complete in two rounds of heat race events. The first four heats were won by Jason Shultz, Mark Smith, Chuck Hebing and Cody Keller. The heat races finishes were then inverted and the second round of heats were won by Ryan Kissinger, Shannon Fisher, Justin Barger and Troy Betts. The “B” main victory went to Matt Horst.
In the thirty-five lap MACH 1 National Open, pole sitter Davie Franek of Wantage, NJ was the man to beat, immediately taking command of the lead position. Justin Barger and Chuck Hebing were in a wild battle for second with Aaron Ott and Mark Smith just off the pace.
On lap nine, the red flag was displayed for Parker Evans to flipped in turn four. When green flag racing resumed, Franek remained the pace setter followed by Barger with Aaron Ott now in third, with Hebing and Smith in the top five.
The red flag was displayed again, this time on lap sixteen when Chuck Hebing flipped with Cody Keller making contact and flipping as well in turn three. Both drivers walked away uninjured.
As the field lined-up for the restart, race leader Davie Franek developed mechanical problems and gave up the lead, retiring to the pits. At this point, Justin Barger became the new race leader and brought the field down to restart the feature event. At the halfway point, Barger, Ott, Smith, Jason Shultz and TJ Stutts made-up the top five.
On lap twenty-five, TJ Stutts moved into third as Ott closed in on Barger. As the field passed the flag stand on lap twenty-nine, Ott pulled along-side of Barger to challenge for the lead and at the same time, the yellow was displayed on lap twenty-nine for Shannon Fisher stopped in turn four.
The restart saw Barger, Ott, Shultz, Smith and Stutts take the green flag and Ott immediately went after the leader. Barger held on to the top spot until lap thirty-one when Ott took the top spot. Ott quickly established a comfortable lead and went on to claim the victory with Barger delivering a very respectable second followed by Jason Shultz, TJ Stutts and Mark Smith.

In the 30 lap Jersey Rush sprint feature, Ryan Smith took the lead at the drop of the green followed by Mark Smith and Freddie Rahmer. Smith quickly established a comfortable lead with JJ Grasso and Lucas Wolfe on the move to the front. On lap ten, the first caution was displayed for Joey Hershey who stopped in turn four. On the restart, Smith now had to contend with Mark Smith and two time Jersey Rush winner JJ Grasso. At the halfway mark, Ryan Smith was on top followed by Mark Smith, JJ Grasso, Freddie Rahmer and Lucas Wolfe.
By lap nineteen, the battle was now between Mark Smith and Grasso for second. On lap twenty-one, Grasso moved into second and began the task of chasing down Ryan Smith.
Following a lap twenty-three restart, Lucas Wolfe made a strong run and advanced to second, passing JJ Grasso going into turn one. With five laps remaining, Wolfe was reeling in Ryan Smith as slower traffic was now making the race very interesting. On lap twenty-seven, Wolfe pulled along-side of Smith but the pass was not going to be completed this time.
Smith pulled a two car length advantage but with two laps remaining, Wolfe was back in the hunt. With the white flag waving, Wolfe took another run for the lead but Ryan Smith was not to be denied his first 410 win and a $5,000 payday. Lucas Wolfe finished second, JJ Grasso third, Kyle Reinhardt was fourth with Freddie Rahmer making up the top five.
The three Lentini Auto Salvage Modified heats were won by Dominick Buffalino, Billy Pauch and Ryan Godown.

At the halfway point, Pauch and Manmiller were at the front of the pack with Jimmy Blewett third, Williams fourth and Keith Hoffman. On lap eighteen, Blewett moved into second and now it was up to him to take the win away from Pauch. With five laps remaining, the top five was Pauch, Blewett, Manmiller, , Keith Hoffman and Duane Howard.
In the final two closing laps, Blewett caught Pauch and offered several challenges but at the drop of the checkered flag, the $3,000 payoff went to Pauch. Blewett was second with Doug Manmiller third, Keith Hoffman was fourth and Duane Howard fifth.

As the field passed on lap thirty-eight, Friesen, Laubach, Howard and Strunk were now surrounded by slower traffic as the four drivers began to duke it out for the lead. Howard moved into second and began his job to reel in the leader.
It was a new race on lap forty as Rick Laubach became the new leader and by lap forty-two, Howard was second with Friesen third and hard charging Jeff Strunk was now running in fourth. USAC EASTERN STORM NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY
BRYAN CLAUSON WINS THRILLER OVER CJ LEARY AS THE USAC EASTERN STORM INVADES NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY THURSDAY NIGHT
Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, IN caught early race leader CJ Leary with just two laps to go and went on to win the 30 lap AMSOIL USAC Eastern Storm feature at the New Egypt Speedway Thursday night. The victory was worth $6,000. CJ Leary, looking for his first ever USAC win led twenty-eight laps of the thirty lap feature. Clauson and Leary swapped the lead twice on lap twenty-nine and on the final lap, Leary and Clauson were side-by-side down the backstretch. Clauson brought the crowd to their feet with his run off of turn four on his way to the checker flag. Clauson won the thriller over CJ Leary. In the twenty-five lap ARDC feature, the race was equally exciting with Steve Buckwalter earning the win over Alex Bright. Buckwalter led the race from the outset, then with five laps to go, Alex Bright took the top spot. Buckwalter regained the lead and went on to the win.
USAC heat race winners were Dalton Gabbard, Mark Smith and Chris Windom as Jon Stanbrough won the semi.
In the thirty-lap USAC sprint feature, CJ Leary took immediate command of the lead with Dave Darland in the chase. By lap four, Bryan Clauson was in second followed by Leary with Darland in fourth. Leary was impressive as he ran to hide from the rest of the field. Brady Bacon was now on a strong run advancing to fourth by lap seven. At the front of the pack, Leary was far ahead and out of sight of runner-up Bryan Clauson.
At the halfway point of the race, CJ Leary was far ahead with no signs of Clauson closing. Dave Darland followed in third with Brady Bacon fourth and Chase Stockon fifth. Brady Bacon was now challenging Darland for third and made the pass on lap eighteen.
The caution flag was displayed on lap nineteen when Jon Stanbrough stopped entering turn one. On the restart, a three car tangle took place in turn four, delaying the race for the final time.
On the restart, Leary was in good company with Clauson and Bacon now challenging. Leary had a six car length lead over Clauson but suddenly, Clauson found a fast lane on the inside of the backstretch. With two laps to go, Clauson, racing on the bottom of the track was now challenging Leary for the win. Leary and Clauson exchanged the lead twice on lap twenty-nine. With the white flag waiving, Leary was back in the lead. Off of turn two, Leary opened the door for Clauson on the bottom and entering turn three, Clauson took the lead. Off of turn four, Leary and Clauson were side-by-side with Clauson edging out Leary for the win at the checker flag. Leary finished second followed by Brady Bacon, Dave Darland and Chase Stockon.
ARDC heat race winners were Steven Drevecki, Tim Buckwalter and Trevor Kobylarz. In the twenty-five lap feature, Steve Buckwalter was the winner but not without a challenge. Buckwalter was the early race leader with Tim Buckwalter in contention. On his way to the front was Alex Bright, racing in fourth on lap four. Bright moved into second on lap six.
Buckwalter had a commanding lead as it was up to Bright to reel him in. At the halfway point, Steve Buckwalter continued to set the pace followed by Alex Bright, Tim Buckwalter, Branden Bright and Trevor Kobylarz. By lap eighteen, Alex Bright was on the leader and the battle was about to start. On lap twenty Bright took the lead but Bruckwalter continued to fight back regaining the lead. The one and only yellow flag of the race was displayed on lap twenty for Tony DiMattia who stopped on the homestretch. At the same time, third place runner Tim Buckwalter retired to the pits.
When green flag racing resumed, Steve Buckwalter held the lead as Branden Bright now moved into second. Alex Bright returned to the runner-up stop and tried to catch the leader but he ran out of time. Steve Buckwalter took the win over Alex Bright, Brenden Bright, Bruce Buckwalter Jr. and Trevor Kobylarz.
The one lap track record for the USAC non-wing sprints was broken twice early in time trials by Bryan Clauson but eventually, it was Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, OK who set the new one lap mark with a time of 15.655.
