RISLONE URC SPRINT SERIES

ED AIKIN TOPS URC FIELD SATURDAY NIGHT ON MACH 1 CHASSIS NIGHT AT WINCHESTER SPEEDWAY

URC last competed at the Winchester Speedway in Winchester, VA back in 1985 but on Saturday night, a huge crowd will remember the thrilling 25 lap Rislone URC Sprint Series feature won by Ed Aikin.

The event sponsored by MACH 1 Chassis saw Aikin of Lincoln University, PA lead the entire twenty-five feature event, but runner-up Kevin Darling ran side-by-side with Aikin for countless laps. Even with a caution flag just one lap from the checker flag, Darling used the far, far outside groove as Aikin took the low lane. When the checker flag it, the win went to Aikin, his first of the season and seventh career URC win. This was the fifth race of the season for URC and Aikin became the sixth different winner. Sponsors on the Ed Aikin sprinter include Viper Venom, BRB Site Contractors, Chips Auto Center, CnB Mushrooms and Tan Racing Collectibles on line. Winchester Speedway Management was thrilled with the show and they are already looking for a possible second date with URC before the end of the 2012 racing season.

A field of twenty-four URC sprints took part in the program with heat race victories go to Chad Trout, Ed Aikin and Kevin Darling.

In the twenty-five lap feature, Aikin led the first lap before a caution flag was displayed for Andy Best who spun in turn four. On the restart, Steve Downs and Davie Franek tangled with Franek taking a slow roll. Both drivers walked away uninjured.

When racing resumed, Aikin remained in control of the lead but Darling was on a mission. With the passing of each lap, Darling slowly reeled in Aikin.

At the halfway point, Aikin remained the leader with Darling close in the chase followed by Kramer Williamson, Chad Trout and Joey Biasi.

On lap eighteen, Darling again staged a challenge for the lead, rim-riding the outside lane around the track. On of nowhere, Josh Weller appeared in fourth on lap eighteen. One lap later, Weller and West tangled with Weller tapping the homestretch wall and rolling to a stop just shy of turn one. The damage was too extensive and Weller was forced to retire to the pits.

When green flag racing resumed, Aikin again had to deal with a determined Kevin Darling who was using the top lane. Again the two front runners brought the crowd to their feet in the duel of the season.

Chris Weiss brought out the caution on the twenty-fourth lap after spinning in the fourth turn. . The one lap run to the wire was a thriller with Aikin again on the bottom and Darling up high. With the checker flag waiving, Aikin was the winner over Darling, Joey Biasi, Kramer Williamson and Robbie Stillwaggon.

FEATURE FINISH: Ed Aikin, Kevin Darling, Joey Biasi, Kramer Williamson, Randy West, Robbie Stillwaggon, Art Liedl, Tim Kelly, Chad Trout, Scott Lutz, Tim Hogue, Jonathan Swanson, Troy Betts, Jared Fink, Dan Mazy, Steve Downs, Andy Best, George Streaker, David Swanson, Chris Weiss, Josh Weller, Jimmy Stitzel, Davey Franek, Kameron Darling.

BRYAN CLAUSON CLAIMS $6,000 IN RACE TWO OF THE USAC EASTERN STORM, DR. DANNY JOHNSON MADE A HOUSE CALL TO NEW EGYPT VICTORY LANE THURSDAY NIGHT AND POCKETS $3,000

Mother Nature delivered a heavy dose of liquid sunshine on the New Egypt Speedway just hours prior to the start of the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Series and Big Block Modified double-header on Thursday night.

And as the saying goes, “the show must go on” , and it did with Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Indiana winning the 30 lap USAC now-wing sprint car feature event as Dr. Danny Johnson of Rochester, NY earned the victory in the 30 lap Big Block Modified feature.

The late afternoon rain forced a one hour delay in the start of the event that was still completed just after 10:30 PM. The track crew did an outstanding job with the track surface that produced some hair-raising thrills in both feature events. Clauson, also the winner of the opening night Eastern Storm event at the Grandview Speedway on Tuesday, set fast time in qualifying with a time of 16.344. Despite the violent storms in the neighboring counties around the track, and the rainfall at the speedway, a strong crowd turned out for USAC’s third annual visit to New Egypt Speedway. Bob Miller, event promoter did announce that the 7th Annual Eastern Storm will take place in 2013.

A field of twenty-three USAC sprint cars took part in qualifying with heat race victories going to Damion Gardner, Levi Jones and “The Beast” Bobby East. For the Big Block Modifieds, a quality field of twenty-nine cars were in the pits with heat race victories going to Billy Pauch, Mike Iles and Jimmy Blewett as the consolation victory went to Ryan Godown.

The thirty lap AMSOIL USAC non-wing sprint feature was a thriller and filled with passing galore. Pole sitter Jerry Coons was the early race leader followed by Trenton, NJ driver Mark Bitner. On the move was Dave Darland who moved into second on lap four. Sixth place starter Bryan Clauson took over third place on lap five and the stage was set for the three wide racing and slide jobs that were still to come.

By lap ten, Coons, Darland and Clauson were in a three car battle for the lead and on lap twelve, Darland went to the front of the line. Coons and Clauson then battled for second and as the field passed for the halfway sign, Darland had a two car length lead with Clauson now second and Coons third as Darren Hagen and Damion Gardner made up the top five.

On lap sixteen, Clauson made a bold move and took the lead with Coons back to second and Darland third. Gardner, who started thirteenth, was now racing in the top five and trying to reel in the leaders. Levi Jones was also threading his way through traffic after starting near mid-pack.

The race once again became real interesting with just five laps to go as Coons and Darland were reeling in race leader Bryan Clauson. With just two laps to go, the top three were racing under a blanket and on the white flag lap, Coons made a run for the lead. Coons had to check-up as Darland used the fast lane to challenge for second. On the final lap heading into turn three, the crowd went to their feet watching the three car race for the win. Clauson held on to take the victory was Jerry Coons second, Dave Darland third, Damion Gardner fourth and Levi Jones fifth.

Danny Johnson

The 30 lap modified feature was also a thriller. Dr. Danny Johnson started on the pole but the win was far from easy. After leading the first two laps, Johnson gave-up the lead to Sammy Martz as Neal Williams followed in third. Danny Bouc was turning in a strong ride, advancing to third on lap ten. Out of nowhere, Ryan Godown who won the consolation, was now running in the top five.

At the halfway point, Sam Martz had solid command of the lead followed by Bouc, Williams, Godown and Mike Iles. The Dr. came back to life and on lap seventeen, he caught Martz to battle once again for the lead. Martz fought hard but by lap nineteen, Danny Johnson was the leader. On lap twenty-five, Bouc caught Martz and challenged for second, moving into the runner-up spot on lap twenty-six.

At the front of the pack, Bouc was closing on race leader Danny Johnson as Godown began to challenge Martz for third. Martz developed mechanical problems and pulled off the track on lap twenty-seven, opening the door for a Ryan Godown to move into third.

With the checker flag waiving, Danny Johnson took the victory over Danny Bouc, Ryan Godown, Mike Iles and Neal Williams. Making up the top ten were Billy Pauch, John Stangle, Billy Pauch Jr., Darren McCaughey and Richie Pratt.

Thunder Wins Out Over Mother Nature . . .

FROM THE INDIANAPOLIS 500 TO GRADVIEW, BRYAN CLAUSON WINS THE USAC JESSE HOCKETT CLASSIC TUESDAY NIGHT ON THE HILL

During the month of May, 22 year old Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Indiana dedicated his efforts to making the starting field in the 2012 running of the Indianapolis 500.

After making that historic start in the 500, Clauson went back on the road with USAC and the AMSOIL National Non-Wing Sprint Series and made the first race of the 6th Annual Eastern Storm, opening at the Grandview Speedway. Clauson was one of nine drivers who broke the track record during the CnB Mushroom Time Trials. Fast time of the night was Kevin Thomas with a time of 13.360. In the 40 lap Jesse Hockett Classic, Clauson took the lead on lap twenty and went on to score the victory, worth $6,000. Also on the program were the ARDC Midgets and Alex Bright was the winner in their feature event.

The NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series went against the odds of the weather forecast, and after a one hour rain delay, the show did go on. A steady rain began to fall during warm-ups and lasted at least thirty minutes. After about a thirty-minute window for track prep, the lightning fast Grandview Speedway saw the USAC sprints return to the track for warm-ups and time trials.

The USAC Non-wing sprints ran three qualifying heats with victories going to Mark Bitner, Tracy Hines and Mark Smith. For the ARDC Midgets, heat winners include Alex Bright, Trevor Kobylarz and Mark Gilmore as Jerry Coons won the “B” main for ARDC.

In the 40 lap Jesse Hockett Classic, Jerry Coons set the immediate pace at the drop of the green flag. As the field was completing lap two, Coleman Gullick took a wild ride flipping violently down the backstretch then breaking through one of the billboards and exiting the speedway, out of sight of the crowd. Gullick’s walked away uninjured and a delay of forty-five minutes was required to safely bring the damaged sprint car trackside and return it to the pits.

On the restart, Coons remained the pace setter with Levi Jones in the chase followed by Chris Windom. Following in the top five were Bryan Clauson and Kevin Thomas. Levi Jones moved into second and went to work on reeling in the leader with Chris Windom in the chase. On lap seventeen, a three car tangle brought out the caution for the final time. The restart was wild as Clauson, who was running third passed Levi Jones and Jerry Coon for the lead. Kevin Thomas remained in the thick of the battle, holding down second followed by Coons.

In the closing laps, Levi Jones entered a battle for second with Thomas and on the final lap, Jones took over the runner-up spot.

Clauson took the win over Levi Jones, Kevin Thomas, Chris Windom and Jerry Coons.

Alex Bright

In the ARDC midget feature, Alex Bright was the winner over Ryan Watt and Nick Wean. Bright took the lead on lap six from Steven Drevicki. The crash marred feature was scheduled to go 20 laps but was cut short to sixteen when Kerry Becker flipped in turn four displaying the red flag. Putting on a real show was Bruce and Steven Buckwalter who were charging to the front after going to the rear earlier in the event. Bruce Buckwalter finished fourth with Steven Buckwalter rounding out the top five.

For Alex Bright of Collegeville, PA, it was his first ARDC win of the season and his third career win with ARDC.
