'Super Matt' Sheppard speeds to victory at New Egypt Speedway

Sheppard's win over Laubach, Pauch launches him to Super DIRTcar Series point lead

NEW EGYPT, N.J. - June 18, 2014 - Fending off challenges until the very last lap, "Super Matt" Sheppard raced to victory Tuesday, June 17, at New Egypt Speedway's Super DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Series Pioneer Pole Buildings, Inc. 'Dirty Jersey 60.'

"It was an unbelievable race," the three-time Super DIRTcar Series Champion said after the action-packed 60-lapper. "Great race track, wide race track, start to finish. There are a few guys that I think could have won that race. Lucky enough, we were able to get to the front and hold on till the end."

Sheppard, who made the haul from Waterloo, N.Y., started in fifth while Heinke-Baldwin Racing teammate Jimmy Phelps, of Baldwinsville, N.Y., took the initial lead over Tim McCreadie and eight-time series champion Brett Hearn.

However, Sheppard's FX Caprara Car Co. / Troyer Race Cars No. 9h was quickly gaining momentum from the green. By lap 4, Sheppard was challenging for second against Phelps, who lost a position when McCreadie grabbed the lead in lap 2.

Sheppard claimed second as the No. 4* of leader McCreadie was pulling away from the rest of the field. As McCreadie started lapping cars in lap 8, Sheppard gained ground and tenaciously chased McCreadie through lapped traffic.

In lap 21, the No. 27J of Danny Johnson spun in front of the flagstand, coming to a stop in turn 1, to bring out the race's first caution. Sheppard was strong on the restart, racing side-by-side with McCreadie before falling behind after a lap. Johnson returned tot he pits in lap 24.

Hometown hero Billy Pauch, of Frenchtown, N.J., was also strong on the restart, charging past Phelps from fourth to third place. He passed sheheppard on the outside in lap 26 and claimed the lead from McCreadie in lap 29.

Behind Pauch, the battle for second place was fierce, with Rick Laubach joining the fray in lap 34 for a three-wide challenge. Sheppard came out ahead, taking second from McCreadie and setting his sights on Pauch in first.

However, Pauch's racecar was fast, seeming poised to stay in the lead through the checkered flag. Every fan in the crowded New Egypt Speedway grandstands simultaneously gasped with shock as Pauch's No. 1 broke town in the frontstretch in lap 46. A drive shaft issue took the No. 1 to the pits and left Sheppard's No. 9h in the lead.

Laubach was fast on this restart, wheeling around McCreadie and charging toward the leader. Another yellow flag in lap 56 slowed the momentum with just four laps to go. Laubach lept into action in the final laps, nosing under the No. 9h in turn 2 of the last lap, but unable to make the pass before the checkered flag.

"I was leaving that bottom wide open and he was good enough to get there, but I could get a good run off th top of (turn) 2," said Sheppard. "I could get a good run off the backstretch and clear him into (turn) 3, and that's what we needed."

Laubach, who took home the trophy from last year's inaugural 'Dirty Jersey 60,' was pleased with a strong second-place finish after an exciting race.

"That was a good race. I would have liked to have been watching that one," Laubach said after the race. "Everyone was running on all they had. It was just good track position, we could move around low, high. When Matt started to see me run the top and I realized he was going to block that from me, then I had to change and do something. I just figured out another groove and it was working, it just needed time. The yellow with four to go took away probably two laps. If I would have had that four in a row continuous, I think I would have had it then."

After starting fourth and leading early in the race, McCreadie finished in third. Hearn started second and finished fourth. Billy Decker, of Sidney, N.Y., charged from his tenth place starting position to finish fifth. Rounding out the top ten are Larry Wight in sixth, Phelps in seventh, Billy Dunn in eighth, Anthony Perriego in ninth and event co-promotor Stewart Friesen in tenth.

Sheppard's victory in Tuesday's 'Dirty Jersey 60' marks his first points win of the 2014 season, launching him past defending champion Hearn in the point standings to the lead with 190.

The Super DIRTcar Series heads to Central New York for the fourth points race of the season Wednesday, June 25, at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y. For more information about the Super DIRTcar Series, including a schedule of upcoming races, visit www.superdirtcarseries.com.

Alex Friesen Remembered & Honored At Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. ‘Dirty Jersey 2’ Tuesday, June 17 At New Egypt Speedway; Each Super DIRTcar Series Modified Heat Pays $68 To Final Qualifier; Touch Of Green Landscaping Posts $268 Hard Charger Award

NEW EGYPT, NJ – One of the sport’s most innovative minds who was lost far too early will be remembered at New Egypt Speedway during the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. ‘Dirty Jersey 2’ special.

Alex Friesen, the uncle of ‘Dirty Jersey’ co-promoter Stewart Friesen and the promotional mastermind who unfortunately passed away in 1996, is gone but not forgotten. Special incentives in Alex Friesen’s honor are set for the Tuesday, June 17 Friesen-Deyo Promotions event at the Garden State facility featuring Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modifieds and new for the 2014 edition, 360 Sprint Cars.

In each of the Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modified heat races, the driver earning the final qualifying spot will take home $68 cash. The cash bonuses have been posted by “friends of Alex” in recognition of his signature number, 68, when he raced.

In the 60-lap Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modified main event, Touch of Green Landscaping of Boyertown, Pa., will reward the Hard Charger Award recipient with a cash bonus of $268, also in Alex Friesen’s memory. Touch of Green owner Matt Reidenauer holds fond memories of the late Alex Friesen.

“He (Alex) was a great guy who really loved people,” Reidenauer said. “That’s what made him so successful in the sport as a promoter. I had a lot of fun with him. I remember him being at our house when he had a race at Grandview (Pa.) with Jeff Strunk. Three of us flew up to Alex’s place for a weekend one time. That is something I will never forget.”

In addition to the Hard Charger cash award, the recipient will also take home a complete set of bumpers and rubrails courtesy of Jimmy Wismer’s WizFab located in Upper Black Eddy, Pa.

The ‘Dirty Jersey’ is the second promotional attempt by Modified and Sprint Car driving star Stewart Friesen in conjunction with special events promoter Brett Deyo. The event debuted successfully at New Egypt in June 2013.

The ‘Dirty Jersey’ event, which carries a rain date of Wednesday, June 18, marks the only appearances of the ’14 season by the Super DIRTcar Series big-blocks and 360 Sprint Cars at New Egypt.

Competitors in both divisions will race for lucrative purse structures at the ‘Dirty Jersey’ event. Some $42,180 will be distributed to racers prior to any bonuses or cash incentives.

The 60-lap Super DIRTcar Series big-block Modified event will pay $6,000 to the winner from a healthy total payout of $29,405. The green money for the Modifieds has been increased from a year ago to $400. This is a boost of $100 from the inaugural event and the standard Super DIRTcar Series purse.

The ‘Dirty Jersey’ is slated to be the second event on a busy Super DIRTcar Series calendar in ’14. The opener takes place Wednesday, May 28 at Brockville (Ont.) Speedway.

360 Sprint Cars will compete in a 25-lap main event - the ‘Turnpike 25’ - offering $3,000 to the winner. Tenth-place pays $400 with $250 reserved to start the main.

“This is going to be a ‘must-see’ show of the summer,” Stewart Friesen said. “Our Super DIRTcar Series field last year was awesome. There was a mix of cars and talent racing together that night you only saw once all year, at that race. Add in the Sprint Cars, and you won’t want to miss this show.”

Friesen-Deyo Promotions will again lease New Egypt – a racy D-shaped 7/16ths-mile clay oval – from facility owner Fred Vahlsing for the midweek special.

Despite heavy rains a year ago that postponed the program 24 hours, a potent field of 45 big-block Modifieds filled the track’s pit area representing New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and the Canadian province of Ontario.

Rick Laubach of Quakertown, Pa., registered his first Super DIRTcar Series victory in the ’13 ‘Dirty Jersey’ with a dominant performance driving the Gary and Lori Herrmann-owned No. 7. He earned more than $7,000 in cash and contingencies. Friesen (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.), who started the event from 15th, finished second, followed by Danny Johnson (Rochester, N.Y.), Ryan Godown (Ringoes, N.J.) and Frank Cozze (Wind Gap, Pa.).

“We fought the weather last year, but our first “Dirty Jersey’ was a success,” Stewart Friesen said. “We picked out some areas where we can improve our experience even more for fans and drivers this year.”

Friesen’s promotional roots run deep through his late grandfather Stan, late Uncle Alex, and his Uncle Joel and father Jamie, the operators of Ransomville Speedway in Western New York.

A rules package has been devised for the 360 Sprint Car portion of the ‘Dirty Jersey’ program and has been posted at www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com in addition to a complete purse structure. Empire Super Sprint (ESS) officials will be working with Friesen-Deyo Promotions to manage the Sprint Car program.

Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. of Schuylkill Haven, Pa., for the second consecutive year, has signed on as a leading sponsor of the event. Pioneer Pole Buildings is the premier builder of post-frame buildings in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and New York. News from Bridgeport Speedway's 'Poker Series'

Promoter: Doug Hoffman - 610-398-4923
'Poker Series' Publicity: Brett Deyo - Deyo99H@aol.com or 845.728.2781

Ryan Godown and Car Owner Rick Clay Hope For Another Winning Hand At Bridgeport Speedway May 27 Poker Series Event; Memorial Day Weekend Special Presents Plenty of Activities for Fans Plus First TSRS 305 Sprint Car Appearance of 2012

BRIDGEPORT, NJ - Ryan Godown hopes for another winning hand on Sunday, May 27 at Bridgeport Speedway.

Godown and the Rick Clay-fielded No. 88c team have set their sights on 'Hand Two' of the Poker Series at Bridgeport Speedway on Memorial Day weekend. The Colonial Pipeline-811 Awareness program at the South Jersey five-eighths-mile oval is headlined by a 40-lap, $4,000-to-win event for big-block Modifieds paying a complete Race of Champions purse: $1,000 for fifth, $500 for 10th and $300 to take the green flag.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps planned for 6 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.

Off the track, there will be plenty of activities for fans enjoy. A driver autograph session is set for the grandstand area from 5-5:30 p.m., an opportunity for fans to meet the drivers who will be competing later that night.

WXTU 92.5 FM will be on hand with a "Ticket Stop" for the 28th anniversary show June 2 at Susquehanna Bank Center (Camden, N.J.) starring Miranda Lambert, Chris Young and Uncle Kracker. Seventy-five pairs of tickets will be raffled off that night. WXTU representatives will be on hand from 6-7 p.m.

Following the completion of racing, there will be music under the pavilion during a post-race party. Camping on the speedway grounds is encouraged.

Godown, of Ringoes, N.J., won the first Poker Series event contested at Bridgeport on March 31. After pitting for two fresh tires, Godown sliced through the field for a victory worth more than $4,000. He also took away an 'Ace' from the five-race series' first hand and gave Lebanon, Pa., area car owner Clay his first big-block victory. The Teo-Pro car is maintained by former PA 358-Modified racer Tom Umbenhauer.

At each 'Poker Series' event, the winner receives an Ace (A), second a King (K), third a Queen (Q) and so on down to the 13th-place finisher receiving a Deuce (2). Following the completion of the five-race series, the driver with the best poker hand earns $2,500, second $1,500 and third $1,000. The driver with the worst hand receives $1,000. Drivers must participate in all five events to be eligible for a points fund.

Rick Laubach of Quakertown, Pa., and Ryan Watt of Boyertown, Pa., both Bridgeport weekly regulars, finished second (King) and third (Queen), respectively in the March race. Hillsborough, N.J.'s Mike Barone, who recently won his first Bridgeport main event, was 13th in the opener and earned a 'Deuce' in March.

A shorter 40-lap distance for 'Hand Two' with the solid purse structure should prove economical for teams. Joining the Modifieds on the program are TSRS 305 Sprint Cars (their first visit to Bridgeport this season), Crate Sportsman and Outlaw Stocks. There will be no racing at Bridgeport on Saturday, May 26 in advance of the 'Poker Series' event.

Grandstand admission is $25 for Adults and $23 for Seniors (65 and over) and Students (with ID). Kids 12 and under are admitted FREE. Pit admission is $30 for Bridgeport members and $35 for non-members. Rules for Modifieds are identical to the Race of Champions event run in March.
