Kyle Larson opens Ohio Speedweek with Attica win
Posted by: | CommentsContact: Brian Liskai – liskai2x@roadrunner.com
ATTICA, Ohio .. Friday, June 17, 2016– NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kyle Larson doesn’t get many opportunities to wheel a sprint car, but when he does he is usually very successful. That was the case Friday as Larson drovethe Paul Silva machine in his first ever appearance at Attica Raceway Park to a victory on Kistler Engines/Ohio CAT Night. Larson, from Elk Grove, California, took the $5,000 payday to open the 34th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions.
In a field that included NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kasey Kahne with fellow NASCAR competitor Tony Stewart in attendance overseeing his All Star organization, Larson would take the lead on a lap five restart and had a few close calls in lapped traffic before earning his third career All Star win.
“That was a fun race. This is a great race track…really racey. I know the racing was good throughout the pack because the lappers were racing hard in front of me. It was just fun. I’ve always wanted to race here and haven’t had the chance to,” said Larson beside his Finley Farms, XYZ Machining, Probuilt Construction, Lucas Oil backed #57.
“Paul Silva did a really good job. I’ve never been here before and he’s only been here a couple of times and for us to put it in victory lane is pretty special,” Larson added to the approval of the standing-room-only crowd.
Reed, who won at Attica the previous week, drove his Crown Battery, Ken Gill Construction backed machine to a second place finish.
“I didn’t get a really good restart…spun my tires bad coming off of two and that was it. I told Kyle we were really rooting for him down in NASCAR land but I don’t know why we had to root for him tonight,” joked Reed.
Chad Kemenah closed on Reed several times but settled for third.
“If we stay up here long enough the wins will start coming. Me and my brother always took pride with the UUI #15 car that we consistently stayed up front to start consistently winning,” said Kemenah beside his Hunter Racing, Seneca Energy, Knight Hawk Holdings, Brilex LLC, JRC Transport, Bonnell’s Rod Shop backed #10H
The Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models ran two features – the regular show on the make-up feature from a May 20 rain out. The results were the same – Wooster’s Doug Drown in victory lane. Drown has five wins at Attica in 2016 and his career total is now at 18 as he sits second on the all-time win list.
In both features Drown would lead all 25 laps and in both Chub Frank would apply pressure but would finish second.
“When I saw Chub I knew he was better than me on the bottom. I just can’t slow down enough to run the bottom. It just isn’t me. Chub is one of the first guys to help me get started so it’s kind of fun to be able to race with him. I knew I had to search around on the track if I was going to stay in front of him. This whole family, Leroy, Tim, my family, my wife….it’s just a great thing,” said Drown beside his Halls Auto Sales, Malcuit Racing Engines, Wooster Glass, Kar Konnections, Hoosier Tire, Swartz Race cars backed #240.
Drown also dedicated the wins to sprint car driver Brad Haudenschild who is fighting health issues.
“I hope people keep Brad in their prayers and help his family out financially. They aren’t rich but the family is diehard racers and hopefully we can come together as a racing family and help them get through this,” Drown said.
In the 40-lap All Star feature Caleb Helms and Reed brought the field to green with Helms gaining the advantage. Reed would still the lead on lap two with Larson driving around Helms a lap later. The caution flew on lap four for a TJ Michael spin. On the ensuing restart Larson would execute a classic slider in turns three and four to take the lead.
Larson pulled away slightly from Reed with Kemenah staying close. Helms, Cale Thomas, Lee Jacobs and Dean Jacobs waged a terrific battle for fourth. Michael would spin again on lap eight, keeping Larson out of heavy lapped traffic.
By lap 10 Larson had pulled away as Reed and Kemenah gave chase and the battle continued for fourth with Lee Jacobs, Thomas and Dean Jacobs. The leaders would encounter very heavy lapped traffic by lap 16 but a caution for a Danny Holtgraver spin would give them a clear track on lap 17.
When the green flew so did Larson, building his lead to 1.17 second by lap 22. Meanwhile Reed and Kemenah began battling for second with Thomas, Lee Jacobs, and now Stuart Brubaker in pursuit. Larson would again hit heavy lapped traffic with 15 laps to go but Reed and Kemenah couldn’t close.
Larson got a scare on lap 28 when he made contact with a lapped machine, which allowed Reed to close to within .5 seconds. Larson then got more aggressive in traffic and pulled away for the win over Reed and Kemenah.
“I knew with 40 laps it would clean off and we would get some grip. I got a better start than I thought I would and we had that restart and Byron (Reed) slipped up off the bottom just a little bit and spun his tires and I was able to get a big run down the back stretch and slide him. >From there I just had to hit my marks every time. The bottom was getting narrower and narrower. Especially on exit there in turn two. The last seven laps or so I thought I could see him once or twice running lower than me in three and four. I wasn’t closing on lappers out of turn two any more. It was tough running in their dirty air and the dirty track and I started to lose grip. I stayed cautious and we were able to get the lead early enough and I was able to run my own pace,” Larson said.
In the first 25 lap late model feature pole-sitter Drown would grab the lead at the drop of the green and only a couple of cautions would keep him from a huge win. Drown was never seriously challenged as he took the win over Frank, Ryan Markham, Doug Eck and Rick Bond.
In the night’s regular feature, Drown again drew the pole starting spot and battled Matt Irey at the drop of the green. Frank would take second on lap four and closed on Drown. Drown would then make the move of the race, going from the middle lane to the cushion and he began to pull away from Frank.
Lapped traffic at the half-way mark would cause Drown to move to the bottom groove and that allowed Frank to close. Meanwhile a tremendous battle ensued for third involving Irey, Cody Scott, Larry Kingseed, JR Gentry, Bond and Ryan Markham. Scott took third on lap 15 and began to close on Drown and Frank.
Once clear of the traffic Drown would move back to the cushion and drove to the win over Frank, Kingseed who got around Scott at the checkers and Irey.
Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, July 1 on Baumann Auto Group Night. General admission is just $10. There will be a complete program of 410 and 305 sprints, late models and dirt trucks. The 410 sprints will also run their make-up feature from the May 20th rained out affair.

Swanson caps off great week with Fremont BOSS win

FREMONT, Ohio – What a week for Kingsburg, California’s Kody Swanson. It started Thursday with a win in the Hoosier Hundred champ car race, continued Friday with a second place run behind his brother at the Carb Night Classic in a sprint car on the pavement in Brownsburg, Indiana. Saturday Kody would win the Little 500 on the pavement in Anderson, Indiana in a sprint car and ended the week with a victory Sunday on Fremont Speedway’s clay oval in a sprint car for the Mike Hensel Memorial Presented by Budweiser and Maple City Ice.
Sunday’s $5,000 victory at Fremont was Swanson’s second Mike Hensel Memorial victory.
Sunday at Fremont, Swanson would take the lead from Shane Cottle on lap 16 and drove away for his second career Rick’s Truck & Equipment Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (BOSS) win.
“What an unbelievable week. It’s hard to put into words. The Hensel family…I won this race two years ago and met them, what an awesome group of people. You see them throughout race tracks wherever we’re at…crown races, saw them at the Hoosier 100 and the Little 500…what great people to have in the sport,” said Swanson. “I’m so thankful to be a part of this event to honor Mike.
“I’m not that good at all. I’m so lucky to be driving this week for three fantastic race teams, the DePalma 63, the Hoffman 69 and tonight Kent Wolters 21…what an unbelievable group of guys. My career was in shambles and probably over and Kent picked me up and gave me another chance and I’m happy to put this in victory lane for him,” added Swanson.
Fremont’s Paul Weaver would dominate the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature for his second win in as many nights at Fremont. Both wins were worth $1,000 each for Weaver who not has 38 career victories at Fremont Speedway.
Weaver’s win Sunday also garnered him valuable points in the chase for the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Sprint Series presented by Engine Pro title.
“That was a lot easier than last night…I don’t know why,” said Weaver beside his Schiets Motorsports, Weaver Performance Center, M&L Excavating, Hampshire Engines backed #1w.
In a race cut short by just six laps due to curfew constraints, Tiffin’s Chester Fitch would garner his second win of the hear in the McCullough Industries 602 Late Models. Fitch led every lap for his fifth career Fremont victory.
“The car felt good and felt like it was finally ready to run and be a race car,” said Fitch beside his Tiffin Auto Auction, Westside Auto Sales, Hi-Way 101 Auto Parts, Danner’s Recycling backed #101.
Shane Cottle and Swanson would bring the field to green for the 33-lap Mike Hensel Memorial. Robert Ballou would spin necessitating another start. Cottle would grab the early lead over Swanson, DJ Foos (making only his third non-wing sprint start), Brady Bacon, Cooper Clouse, Thomas Meseraull and Dave Darland.
On lap 3 Dustin Stroup and Paul Dues would get together to halt the action. On the restart Sodeman and Dues would spin. When the green reappeared Cottle and Swanson pulled away slightly as Bacon moved into third with Foos, Meseraull, Clouse and Darland battling for fourth. Meseraull would take fourth on lap eight.
The big cushion in turn four kept the field close and often jumbled the running order from third on back.
On lap 11 the red would appear when Mike Burkin spun sending Tyler Gunn hard into the soft wall in turn three. He was okay but done for the night. Prior to the red Bacon hit the curb in turn four hard and dropped several positions. The restart order was Cottle, Swanson, Foos, Darland, Meseraull, Clouse and Bacon.
After following Cottle for the first 15 laps, Swanson made his move to the lead on lap 16 just before the caution would fly for Clouse who won the BOSS event a few weeks ago at Fremont.
On lap 19, Foos and Meseraull would tangle while battling for third, with Foos spinning. That would necessitate a fuel stoppage. The race would go the last 14 laps non-stop.
On the restart Swanson began pulling away from Cottle. The car on the move was Ballou who stormed from the rear of the field following his opening lap spin to fourth by lap 20. By lap 24 Swanson had built a sizeable lead while Cottle battled with Meseraull, Ballou and Bacon.
With seven laps remaining Swanson’s lead was over three seconds with Cottle, Meseraull and Ballou waging a very entertaining battle for second. Meseraull would grab second on lap 28 but Swanson held a commanding lead.
Swanson would drive to the checkers over Meseraull, Cottle, Ballou and Landon Simon.
In the 25 lap 305 sprint feature Dustin Dinan and Ricky Peterson would bring the field to green. Dustin Stroup would bring out the caution before a lap could be completed. Once the green flew again the race would go non-stop.
Peterson would grab the early lead over Weaver, Dinan, Jamie Miller, Steve Rando, Luke Griffith and Jason Keckler. Weaver would drive to Peterson’s outside to take the lead on lap three.
Despite encountering heavy lapped traffic by the eighth circuit, no one could catch Weaver as Peterson tried to fend off Miller and Rando. With 10 laps to go Weaver’s lead was five seconds over Miller with Peterson, Rando, Keckler, Dinan, Nate Dussel and Bobby Clark in pursuit.
By lap 20, Weaver had built a seven second lead with Rando and Miller trading the second and third spot over the next few laps.
Weaver drove away to the win over Rando, Miller, Peterson and Keckler.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Friday, June 3 as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series invades. The 305 sprints will all run feature events – odds in the point standings and evens in the point standings.

Blaney gets late race pass for All Star win at Attica

ATTICA, Ohio Friday, May 27, 2016– On a slick race track there are few better than Hartford, Ohio’s Dale Blaney. “The Low Rider” proved it again Friday at Attica Raceway Park as he threw a “slider” on Chad Kemenah on a restart with five laps to go and went on to score his 130th career Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions victory.
Blaney’s win on Tusing Builders/Kear’s Speed Shop Night is the 25th of his career at Attica of which 18 have been All Star victories.
“That was a hell of a race and a hell of a win. I apologize to James (McFadden) for getting into him. We were both racing really, really hard and I was coming pretty hard at that point and we were going for the same spot. We collected each other…fortunate enough I got through it. We will have some more runs…he’s here for about four months so I know we’ll race hard again,” said Blaney beside his Muddy Outdoor and Hunting Equipment, Big Game Tree Stands, Penske Shocks, Ti22 Performance, GF1 Chassis backed machine.
“I have to thank my guys George and Skippy and Donny…they do an unbelievable job. This is a brand new car. We put it together this week. We really haven’t been running very good, but this was flawless. First time in a long time from lap 20 on I got better,” added Blaney, a six time All Star champion.
Seven time Attica champion Byron Reed from Monclova, Ohio, would get around Kemenah late for a second place finish.
“We’ve had a really good year. We’ve been fast every night out. It felt good. I made one mistake and that’s where Dale got by me. I don’t know if he was a lot faster than me. I think maybe if I didn’t make that mistake it might have been different. I’m happy with what we did,” said Reed beside his Crown Battery, Kistler Engines backed #5.
Kemenah, from Alvada, Ohio, led laps 5 through 35, but would record a third place finish
“We keep hanging around the top five and we get better every time we come here. When it gets to the ‘creeper’ deal like that…that’s where he (Blaney) shines. We weren’t bad…not bad at all. We’ll keep working at it and get better. Every time we run in top five it adds up and the team gets better. You hang around long enough and the wins come in bunches,” said Kemenah beside his Hunter Racing, Seneca Energy, Brilex LLC, JRC Transport, DKW Transport, Champion Oil, Bonnel’s Rod Shop, Nighthawk Holdings backed #10H.
In the Sunoco American Late Model Series “Hammer Down” Doug Drown from Wooster, Ohio would hold off Matt Irey for his third win of the season at Attica. It is his 16th career victory at the track. But the night wasn’t easy as mechanical issues early had the team scrambling to make repairs
“We’ve won four out of the six races we’ve run. This Swartz Race Car is phenomenal. I don’t know why other people haven’t switched to them sooner. They are definitely a pretty damn good piece. I went a little harder on tires than the other guys,” said Drown beside his Hall’s Auto Sales, Kar Konnections, Malcuit Racing Engines, Nationwide Vehicle Protection, Wooster Glass backed #240.
“The guys worked their butts off. We broke a header in hot laps. We welded one up…thanks to Byron Reed and Mike Bores for letting us borrow their welder. My son brought me another one from the house…it’s been an adventure in the pits for us. But the car was just phenomenal,” Drown added.
The Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature was a barn-burner with Jason Keckler, Jamie Miller, Paul Weaver and Brandon Moore battling throughout. Keckler would withstand a restart with four laps to go to grab his second win of the season. It was the third of his career at Attica.
“I was a little bit nervous on that restart knowing Paul (Weaver) was behind me. I was wondering ‘is he up top or on the bottom.’ Paul’s usually on the top but I saw someone under me and I didn’t know if it was him or Jamie (Miller). I really didn’t want that yellow…especially when I saw who was behind me and how far back he had come from and knowing how good he is when the track gets like this,” said Keckler beside his Meggit Farms, Uncle Bob’s Paint Shop backed #25.
Broc Martin and Brady Bacon would bring the field to green for the 40-lap All Star feature with Martin gaining the advantage. Kemenah would quickly challenge Bacon for second as Martin pulled away slightly. The car on the move early was James McFadden. The Australian would drive into fourth on lap three and took third a circuit later.
Kemenah would drive to the high side of turn four on lap five to take the lead from martin with Bacon and McFadden trading the third spot lap after lap while Cap Henry and Byron Reed stayed close. McFadden would take third on lap seven and two laps later drove into second.
Following a caution on lap nine for a Bradley Howard spin, the racing up front would get very entertaining. Kemenah held on to the lead over McFadden, martin, Bacon, Henry, Blaney, Reed and Trey Jacobs. Henry would storm into third on lap 12 with Reed grabbing fourth a circuit later.
With 15 laps recorded Kemenah’s commanding lead began to dissipate as he drove into lapped traffic. McFadden was comfortably in second while Henry, Reed, and Blaney battled for third. At the half-way point, Kemenah would lead but the race for second had the huge crowd on the edge of their seats between McFadden, Henry, Reed and Blaney.
Henry would take the runner-up spot on lap 22 with McFadden, Blaney, Reed and Trey Jacobs in tow. Blaney and McFadden would make contact on lap 26, sending McFadden off the high side of turn three. On the restart Kemenah lead Henry, Blaney, Reed, Jacobs and Chris Andrews.
Kemenah narrowly avoided disaster with 10 laps to go when he jumped the cushion in turn four. He would gather it back up and maintained the lead over a closing Henry with Blaney, Reed, Jacobs and Andrews in pursuit. Howard and Martin would spin on opposite ends of the track on lap 32.
When the green reappeared Blaney and Reed would get around Henry. With five laps to go Bacon would spin. On the restart Blaney threw a slider at Kemenah and it stuck as “the Low Rider” took the lead. Kemenah would have his hands full now with Reed with Henry, Andrews and Jacobs staying close.
Reed would grab second on lap 38 but ran out of time to reel in Blaney.
“Cap was showing Chad his nose a little bit off of four and two. On the yellow with eight laps to go Chad dropped to the bottom of one and two. That left top open for me and I drove by Cap and it got me in a good spot. I wasn’t very good around the bottom. I couldn’t stop and go very good. Luckily enough he (Kemenah) kept running the bottom of one and two and it gave me an opportunity. It was up in the air what he was going to do on that restart. I thought he would drop but I didn’t know and it gave me a good run at him and I threw it across there and it stuck. I thought I’d see him back under me,” said Blaney of his winning move.
Behind Blaney, Reed and Kemenah, Henry and Andrews would round out the top five with rookie Trey Jacobs, Danny Holtgraver, Kraig Kinser (up from 26th starting spot), Dean Jacobs (up from 20th starting spot) and Travis Philo rounding out the top 10.
Drown and Devin Shiels led the field to green for the 30-lap late model feature. Drown would grab the lead over Matt Irey, Shiels, Brad Malcuit, Rob Anderzack, Ryan Markham and Mike Bores before a caution was displayed for a Larry Bellman, Nate Potts tangle.
On the restart Drown would be hounded by Irey with Shiels, Malcuit, Markham and Bores waging a terrific battle for third. With five laps in Drown had pulled away slightly from Irey with Shiels, Malcuit, Markham, Bores and Jon Henry in pursuit.
The final caution flew on lap 15 for a multi-car crash. This time on the restart Drown couldn’t shake Irey as the pair would run nose to tail the last half of the race. Meanwhile, the race for third continued to entertain between Shiels, Malcuit, Bores, Markham and Henry.
Henry was the car on the move as he drove into sixth with six laps remaining and into fourth by lap 26. No one was going to touch Drown as he drove to the win over Irey, Henry, Shiels and Bores.
“I had a little bit of a respect issue…on those restarts they hit me in the rear a little bit. I don’t understand. That’s why I locked them up. If you can’t pass on the race track you shouldn’t have to wreck somebody. I’m a little upset about that. But other than that the car was phenomenal,” Drown said.
Brandon Moore and Keckler brought the field to green for the 25-lap 305 sprint feature but before a lap could be scored Dan McCarron and Thomas Schinderle would spin. On the ensuing restart Moore would grave the lead over Keckler, Kelsey Ivy and Seth Schneider.
Keckler would close on Moore by lap four and drove around him into the lead a lap later. Behind them was a great battle involving Ivy, Schneider, Jamie Miller and Paul Weaver. Miller took third on lap five and started to close on Keckler and Moore.
With 14 laps scored the battle for the lead was intense between Keckler, Miller, Moore and Weaver. It would have the fans on the edge of their seats until the caution flew with four laps to go for a Steve Rando spin.
The restart order was Keckler, Weaver, Miller, Moore and Ivy. Miller would regain second when the green flew but Weaver and Moore stayed close while Kyle Capodice moved into the top five. Keckler wouldn’t make a mistake and drove to the win over Miller, Weaver, Moore and Capodice.

FREMONT, Ohio – Wooster, Ohio’s Broc Martin watched a huge lead wiped out late in the 410 sprint feature at Fremont Speedway. But, he got a tremendous restart, hit his marks and went on to dominate for his second career win on Root’s Poultry Night.
Martin had built a 3.2 second lead late in the 30-lap feature for the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints. But a red flag with seven laps to go put Cole Duncan – who had been chipping away at the lead by .2 seconds every lap – right on Martin’s rear bumper. Martin focused and drove away for the victory, leading all 30 laps.
“I have to thank a real special friend of ours. Health wise he’s had some issues here lately and that’s Jim Smith Enterprises…Smitty…he’s been a huge influence on my career and my life in general. I have to thank Guerne Heights Drive In, a great please to eat if you’re down in the Wooster area. I have to thank Orrville Trucking and Grading, Santmyer Oil, Keizer Wheels, my friends Rick and Barb…Mt. Dew Rick, he helps a ton. I have to thank my buddies Wayne and Matt and my parents. My mom retired and got a second job just so we can do this. My dad works 55 hours a week,” Martin said in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.
“I want to thank all the fans and folks at Fremont Speedway. I drive past a track 20 minutes from my home to come up here because I run with some of the best drivers in the country at one of the best facilities in the country. Everyone here has treated me like a member of the family,” Martin concluded.
The Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint Feature couldn’t get more exciting. Dundee, Michigan’s Dan McCarron held off 15th place starter Nate Dussel to earn his first career Fremont victory. It was by the narrowest of margins - .01 seconds.
“I have a lot of people to thank, mainly my wife Kate who helps me out on this car night in and night out…every night. My dad and my sister are usually here. Blake Smith is just awesome help. We’ve really struggled but tonight I think we hit the balance. I don’t know what we did but Blake’s not changing it,” said McCarron beside his McCarron Sales and Promotions, All Star Performance, XYZ Machining, Timken, Rod End Supply, Engler Machine & Tool backed #22M.
Delta, Ohio’s Ky Harper would dominate the McCullough Industries 602 Late Model feature, though he had a close call late in the race with a couple of lapped cars. He would dig his way through for his second win of the season and the seventh of his career.
“I wasn’t breathing there when I almost tangled with those lapped cars. This car isn’t anything like the car we had last year. We’ve had to do a ton of work on it. We’re getting it closer. That’s two victories in last two outings,” said Harper beside his Handy Grafix, Cut Right Lawn Care, Jed’s Twist T-Freez, Rocket Chassis, Childress Collision, Classic Industries backed #34.
Fostoria, Ohio’s Shawn Valenti would battle with Cory McCaughey throughout the 15 laps of the Burmeister Trophies Dirt Truck feature before driving to his second win of the season. It is Valenti’s 27th career win at Fremont and moves him into 16th on the track’s all-time win list.
“When I was a little kid sitting up there in the stands just hoping one day I could be standing out here on the front stretch let alone collect 27 of them…it’s pretty amazing,” said Valenti who was involved in a multi-car crash in the 410 sprint feature earlier.
“I have to thank Jeff Babcock for putting me in this thing. I have to thank Craig Miller Trucking, Gressman Powersports, JP Enterprise, KS Sales and Service, Real Geese Decoys…it feels good to be back up here,” added Valenti.
The start of the 30 lap 410 sprint feature got off to a horrendous start as seven cars were involved in a vicious crash on the back stretch. It would eliminate the cars of Dean Jacobs, Valenti, Caleb Griffith, Duane Zablocki and Stuart Williams with Cale Thomas and Jody Keegan making repairs to rejoin the field. On the second attempt at green Ben Rutan would spin.
On the third attempt Martin battled with Trey Jacobs with Duncan, Stuart Brubaker, Brian Lay and Travis Philo in tow. Martin began to build up a sizeable lead over Jacobs and Duncan with Lay moving into fourth on lap four.
Martin caught the back of the field with just seven laps scored but his lead grew over Jacobs and Duncan with a great battle shaping up for fourth with Lay, Brubaker and Philo. By the half-way point Martin’s lead was over three seconds as Jacobs and Duncan battled for second followed by Lay, Philo, Brubaker, Jack Sodeman, Jordan Ryan and Tyler Gunn.
Duncan would take second on lap 18 but Martin had built a four second lead. Duncan was closing lap after lap when, on lap 23, Gunn made contact with the front stretch wall, flipping hard. He would emerge okay.
Martin got a tremendous restart and began rebuilding his lead. Duncan and Jacobs would battle again for second with Lay, Philo, Brubaker and Ryan in tow. With just three laps remaining Martin had built his lead back to over two seconds as he would drive to the win.
Duncan, Jacobs, Lay and Brubaker would round out the top five.
“You (pointing to announcer Brian Liskai) were freaking me out…I could hear you saying he was chopping of two tenths of a second. I know Cole, he’s a heck of a racer, and last year when I won I had to do almost the same thing except Byron (Reed) had to come all the way from fifth to second. I knew Cole was definitely going to be a challenge. I knew as long as I could hit my marks…and to be honest with you probably with about five laps to go I messed up in three and four but in one and two I was nailing it. It’s tough when you’re leading like that because you don’t know which lane to chose but I guess it worked,” Martin said.
McCarron and Steve Rando brought the field to green in the 25-lap 305 sprint feature with McCarron gaining the advantage. Alvin Roepke and Brian Gibbs would tangle after a lap was scored necessitating a single-file restart. McCarron would rocket back into the lead while Bobby Clark would slip past Rando for second with Luke Griffith ready to pounce in fourth.
Griffith would move into third on lap four but would spin with five laps scored. The restart order was McCarron, Clark, Rando, Jamie Miller and Dustin Stroup, Ricky Peterson, Paul Weaver and Nate Dussel.
Once again McCarron would pull away from Clark with Rando and Miller in tow. A great battle was underway for fifth involving Stroup, Weaver and Dussel. Griffith would bring out another caution with 10 laps scored. When the green flew so did McCarron over Clark, Rando, Miller, Weaver, Dussel and Stroup.
As McCarron pulled away slightly, Clark and Rando would battle for second. A quick caution for a Dustin Rall spin on lap 14 was the only thing keeping the rest of the field close to McCarron who had driven a flawless race to that point.
On the restart McCarron hit his marks as Rando drove around Clark for second with Dussel up to fourth followed by Miller, Weaver, and Roepke from the back of the field. The final caution flew on lap 19 for Gibbs.
McCarron now had his hands full when the green flew as Dussel drove from fourth to second with Rando challenging as well. With four laps to go McCarron, Dussel and Rando were neck-and-neck for the lead with Weaver, Clark and Roepke battling in their tire tracks. Two laps from the end Dussel was racing right on McCarron’s rear bumper.
As they took the white flag, McCarron dove to the bottom to block Dussel’s advance. As they raced into the final two turns McCarron slipped off the bottom just enough to give Dussel a shot. The duo had a drag race to the checkers with McCarron winning by less than a bumper.
Dussel, Rando, Weaver, and Clark would round out the top five.
“Before the last restart (with six laps to go) my crew guy Blake told me to keep it wound up into three. I thought if I could just carry enough momentum and then even if I had to slide I’d be alright. Luckily I was. Nate is a heck of a driver and has won a ton of races here. He didn’t run me up and I appreciate that,” McCarron said.
Harper and Chester Fitch brought the field to green for the 15-lap late model feature but before a lap could be completed Jamie Miller would spin. On the ensuing restart Harper would battle with Fitch before wrestling the top spot with Brandon Perkins, Steve Sabo and Matt Shipley in tow.
The race would go caution-free the rest of the way. Harper would build a sizeable lead over Fitch with Sabo taking third on lap two, bringing Shipley to fourth. Shipley would drive into third on lap five.
The only thing that would slow Harper was two lapped cars with three laps to go as he nearly made contact. Harper was able to negotiate through the traffic and drove to the win over Fitch, Shipley, Steve Sabo and John Brooks.
Jim Holcomb and Cory McCaughey brought the field to green for the 15 lap dirt truck feature. It was immediately a seven truck battle for the lead with McCaughey holding the slight advantage over Holcomb and Dana Fry. Eighth starter Valenti would drive into fourth on lap two and around Fry into second a lap later.
Valenti took the lead using the high line on lap five with McCaughey continuing to battle to his inside. Frey, Kent Brewer and Brandon Leighton remained within striking distance. The event’s only caution flew on lap six for a Brad Stuckey spin.
When the green flew the battle between Valenti and McCaughey resumed with Frey racing with Brewer for third while Leighton and Dustin Keegan waged war for fifth. With five laps to go Brewer now challenged Frey for third as Valenti moved to the low groove to try and block McCaughey’s advance.
McCaughey gave Valenti all he could handle but when the checkers flew Valenti took the win. Brewer would come in third followed by Frey and Jeff Ward.

ATTICA, Ohio – Matt Irey just needed one little break Friday, May 6 at Attica Raceway Park on Bazell Fuels/Croghan Colonial Bank Night. He got it on a restart with just six laps to go.
The Mansfield, Ohio driver took advantage of leader Devin Shiels slight bobble on the cushion in turns three and four to drive into the lead. He then held off a late race rally by Shiels to score his second career win at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant in the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model division. It was the first race of the season for the Attica/Wayne County Speedway Late Model Series Challenge.
“The car was good all night. I knew the top would be treacherous…I saw that cushion building and building and I saw him (Shiels) bobble and knew I had to go for it. I switched chassis this year and I love it,” said Irey beside his Sensmeier Oil, Fultz Fabrication, Sluss Realty and Robin Jackubic, Rod Eddleblute’s Garage backed machine.
“I have to thank my mom and dad too. Actually my mom is in Vegas tonight so she has missed both my wins now. I always tell her ‘maybe you should stay home, I have better luck,’” Irey joked.
In the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature Paul Weaver would utilize the high line to take the lead on lap 12, survived a couple of late race cautions and held off Kyle Capodice for his 34th career win in the division. Weaver leads the 305 sprint division in all-time wins at Attica.
“I got it right on the cushion 10 out of 25 laps. I saw that young kid (Capodice) behind me and I said to myself ‘he can’t win two in a row.’ Luck was on my side tonight. We changed the tires tonight…I couldn’t stand the other ones and I changed the top wing, and that helped a bunch,” said Weaver beside his M&L Excavating, Hampshire Racing Engines, Schiets Motorsports, Weaver Performance Center backed sprint car.
Fremont, Ohio’s Keith Sorg has been racing six years in the dirt trucks without a win. A couple of weeks ago he got his first at Fremont Speedway. He scored his second straight win Friday at Attica after a great battle with Cory McCaughey throughout the feature.
“It doesn’t get any better than this. That battle with Cory wore me out. I have to thank my mom and dad, Fremont Fence, Advance Auto, Westend Tire, M&L Excavating and Level Performance,” said Sorg.
Ryan Markham and Shiels brought the field to green for the 25-lap late model feature. Shiels would gain the advantage over Markham, Rob Anderzack, Cody Scott and Dave Hornikel. Action would grind to a halt when John Bores got out of shape in turn two with J.R. Gentry making contact and flipping onto the car of Ken Hahn. No one was hurt.
When the race resumed Shiels continued to lead Markham who had his hands full with Anderzack while Scott, Hornikel, Rick Bond and Irey gave chase. Rocky Owens would stop on the track with three laps in for another caution. On the restart Markham and Anderzack both applied pressure to Shiels with Scott, Bond, Hornikel and Irey in tow.
Markham continued to hound Shiels when a debris caution flew on lap 10. Meanwhile Irey, who started seventh, had worked his way to fourth. Another car on the move was Doug Drown. A late arrival at the track, Drown had started last in the B-main and won, and started the A-main in 16th and had worked his way to seventh by lap 10.
On the ensuing restart Shiels got a great jump while Markham had to deal with Anderzack and Irey. With 13 laps scored Markham was racing right on Shiels’ rear bumper. But, a costly stumble on the cushion in turn two on lap 16 by Markham allowed Shiels to get away as Anderzack raced into second.
With seven laps to go Shiels held a four car length lead while Anderzack, Irey, Markham and Drown waged an entertaining battle for second. Irey would move into second on lap 19 as Anderzack spun, collecting Drown. That would wipe out a comfortable lead for Shiels.
When the green flew, Shiels would make a costly error on the cushion in turns three and four as Irey drove into the lead with Markham taking second and Shiels moving back to third. As the laps wound down, Shiels and Markham began to close on Irey. Irey would hold them off for the win with Scott coming home fourth and Bond rounding out the top five.
In the 25 lap 305 sprint feature Trey Jacobs and Trevor Baker brought the field to green with Jacobs – who plans to run mostly 410 sprints this year – taking the lead. Seth Schneider would make contact with an infield tire on lap three to keep the field close.
On the restart Jacobs would continue to lead Baker while Kyle Capodice and Paul Weaver battled for third. Weaver would rim-rid into third on lap five and after a great battle with Baker, took second on lap 10 as Baker made contact with an infield barrier, ending his night.
When the green flew Weaver drove to Jacobs’ outside and would drive into the lead on lap 12 with Capodice staying close in third. Meanwhile Dustin Dinan had charged from his 13th starting spot to fourth with Dan McCarron, Dustin Stroup, Steve Rando and Jamie Miller giving chase.
Just as Weaver began to pull away, another caution would fly for Luke Griffith on lap 14. Jacobs would drive to Weaver’s inside on the restart with Capodice, McCarron, Dinan and Stroup staying close. Capodice would take second on lap 16 and closed on Weaver.
With just four laps to go Thomas Schinderle would stop setting up a four lap shoot out. Weaver would go right to the cushion on the restart with Capodice continuing to drive the bottom groove. The pair ran side by side to the end. Weaver would get the close victory with Jacobs settling for third and Dinan and McCarron rounding out the top five.
Sorg and McCaughey would lead the charge to the green in the 15-lap dirt truck feature. After an opening lap incident involving Brian Arnold and John Jones, the race would go green the rest of the distance.
McCaughey grabbed the early lead but Sorg applied pressure with Dustin Keegan and Brad Stuckey staying close. McCaughey and Sorg race each other clean and hard over the first eight laps until Sorg finally got past on lap nine.
Sorg would hold off McCaughey for his first career Attica win with Stuckey taking third over Keegan and Curt Inks.
Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 13 for the Eric Phillips 28th Anniversary Classic presented by American Powersports and Merrill Lynch. It will be a Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series Presented by KS Sales and Service point night for the 410 sprints and a JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Sprint Championship Series Presented by Engine Pro for the 305 sprints as they vie for $1,000 to win thanks to Gressman Powersports. The UMP Late Models will also be in action.

Blaney holds off Kemenah for Attica All Star win

ATTICA, Ohio – When a sprint car driver is leading, sometimes it puts him at a disadvantage…not knowing where the best groove is or where to make a pass. For Dale Blaney, it took another driver to show him where the track was taking rubber Friday night at Attica Raceway Park.
Blaney, a six-time Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions titlist, would battle with two time series champ Chad Kemenah while dealing with a rubber-down racing surface and lapped traffic to earn his 128th career All Star win.
Blaney’s 24th career Attica win – 17 of which have been All Star victories – came on the rescheduled HD Supply Spring Nationals Presented by Fisher Performance and Underground Utilities Inc.
“I smelled it (rubber) off of two early as soon as I got a straight away from lapped traffic. I kinda didn’t know really where to run. They were all running through the middle here (turns three and four) and I thought I might be able to clear a few of them up. All of sudden Chad got a run and went by. I picked the pace up in a different spot. I knew I wasn’t very good and I knew I had to get going and he kind of showed me where to run,” said Blaney, pilot of the GoMuddy.com, Big Game Tree stands, CH Motorsports #1.
“CH Motorsports….Janet (Holbrook), Aaron (Call), Todd Quiring and everybody at Big Game and Muddy...we have a great situation. George and Skippy and Donny are killer on the car. I just have to drive this thing. Ninety-eight percent of the time it’s really good…20 percent of the time I’m really good so I was 20 percent tonight. Glad we started up front tonight. Track position meant a lot. I love coming to Attica….you fans have treated me great the past 28 years of my life and I appreciate it,” added Blaney.
At one point – from lap 13 through lap 17 – Blaney and Kemenah would trade sliders while battling in lapped traffic. It was frustrating for Kemenah, who sits fourth on Attica’s all-time win list right behind Blaney.
“The track took rubber and then we got behind someone who, in my mind, probably shouldn’t be out there but we just make things up as we go along but we’ll have that. I want to thank all these fans. I’m really proud of my team. Rob Hunter gives us a great race car. I want to thank Scott Bonnell for coming on board this year, JRC Transport…we have a big team effort going on right now and to get off this good of a start is awesome,” said Kemenah.
Lee Jacobs, who ran second during the early stages of the 40-lap feature, would stay within striking distance but would come home third.
“This place and Fremont were both home tracks to me for a long time and laps around here meant a lot tonight. When the track gets slick like that you know where you have to move and when you have to move. About half way through I saw Dale begin to gain speed and he passed Chad on the bottom and got a hint of rubber down there so I moved and then it was hold on to position and don’t miss the bottom,” said Jacobs beside his Simcox Grinding and Steel, Amanda J. Lewis Attorney at Law, Crown investments backed #81.
“I can’t thank Johnny Lewis enough and the two guys helping me Brian Shane and Steve Shane. This is an unbelievable first night with the All Stars. I’m making all the calls on my own so to do this and end up on the front stretch is pretty damn awesome,” added Jacobs.
In the 30-lap Sunoco American Late Model Series feature which had only one caution, Doug Drown would utilize the high line to take the lead from Rusty Schlenk on lap 17 after a very spirited battle, and went on to claim his 14th career Attica win. For the defending track champion, the victory moves him into second on the Attica all-time win list.
“This thing was great any where we went on the track. I have to thank Keith Berner for building a heck of a shock and helping us out on things to do and Dave Hornikel for the help with the Swartz chassis…I really had no clue what we were doing but the car was awesome,” said Drown beside his Hall’s Auto Sales, Wooster Glass, Kar Konnections, Malcuit Racing Engines backed #240.
“I have to thank Leroy Hall for believing in us to do a switch after the year we had,” Drown. “I’ve always struggled in slick so to have a car we can maneuver around and beat Rusty who is one of the best in the business in the slick…hopefully we can keep working and get better.”
Young Kyle Capodice showed the maturity of a season veteran in the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint Feature. At the drop of the green, he let pole sitter Jamie Miller pull ahead going into turn one, and then he turned under him to the bottom and took the lead. The Sandusky, Ohio driver was then patient with lapped traffic and made another veteran move on a lapped car with four laps remaining to drive to his first career sprint car win.
“I’m speechless…. I want to thank Franklin Sanitation and Joe Darmofal of Dramofal Racing, Fred Wolfe Auctioneer, Alvin Roepke at Vision Quest, my dad for all the hours he puts in the shop with me, my brother, my girlfriend and most of all the man above,” said Capodice.
For the Arctic Cat All Star feature, Blaney and Jacobs would bring the field to green with Blaney gaining the advantage. Jacobs, opening week winner Caleb Griffith, Byron Reed and Kemenah would stay close. The action would slow on lap 7 for a Broc Martin spin. On the restart Blaney would lead Jacobs and Griffith with Kemenah getting around Reed.
Kemenah had found something on that restart as he immediately then took second on lap 10 and began reeling in Blaney. On lap 15 Kemenah executed a slider for the lead in turns three and four with Blaney returning the favor in one and two and Kemenah moving back into the lead on lap 16. Blaney would drive to the bottom of turns three and four to regain the lead on lap 17 as the leaders entered lapped traffic.
Kemenah stayed close to Blaney with Jacobs, Reed and Griffith in tow while Chris Andrews, Bryan Sebetto, Sheldon Haudenschild and Ryan Smith waged a terrific battle behind the leaders. With 12 laps to go, Blaney muscled his way around a lapped car to put a little distance between himself and Kemenah.
Blaney would stay in the rubber the remainder of the race for the win over Kemenah, Jacobs, Reed, Griffith, Smith, Haudenschild, Sebetto, Travis Philo (up from 18th) and Andrews.
In the ALMS feature, Schlenk and Rocky Owens brought the field to green with Owens gaining the advantage over Schlenk, Drown and Matt Irey, the top four would entertain the big crowd with Schlenk taking the lead on lap three while Owens continued to race to his inside with Drown ready to pounce.
Drown was able to squeeze under Owens for second on lap 14 and then used a lapped car to drive around Schlenk for the lead on lap 17. The only caution would fly for Bob Mayer on lap 19 with Drown leading Schlenk, Owens, Irey and Jeep VanWormer. The car on the move was opening night winner Mike Bores who had worked his way to 7th from his 17th starting position.
Drown was able to pull away the final 11 laps for the win over Schlenk, Owens, VanWormer and Irey.
Jamie Miller and Capodice would lead the field to green for the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, but C.J. Jones would tangle with Kelsey Ivy sending Ivy against the wall in turn one and Jones upside down. On the ensuing restart Capodice would drive under Miller for the lead as Nate Dussel rocketed into second before the caution flew for Jerry Dahms. On the restart Alex Hill would spin. The race would go green the rest of the way.
Capodice would pull away slightly from Dussel as Ricky Peterson took third on lap three. Paul Weaver would drive around Miller into fourth by lap six. The car on the move was Dustin Dinan who drove into six from his 15th starting spot.
Capodice encountered heavy lapped traffic by the half-way point as Dussel and now Weaver closed. Capodice showed patience beyond his years as he stayed glued to the bottom despite the lapped cars. With four laps to go Dussel was within a car length with Weaver, Peterson, Miller and Dinan closing.
Capodice was finally able to dispatch a lapped car with two laps to go and drove away to his first win over Dussel, who edged out Weaver, Peterson and Miller.
