ASCS National Sprint Series

From 13th, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Wins At Texas Motor Speedway

FT. WORTH, Texas (April 7, 2017)... While several drivers have entered the season with back-to-back wins with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. is the first to go three-for-three right out of the gate; adding his third win in as many outings with a dominating run from 13th at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.

The opening night of Tony Stewart's Texas Sprint Car Nationals presented by Machinery Auctioneers, the win is also Hafertepe's third at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track since 2014.

"My third win here, I feel like we're getting pretty comfortable here, but I have to thank these fans for coming out tonight. I tried to make it an exciting race, and I think we did coming from 13th," said Hafertepe who is also Friday's CP-Carrillo Hard Charger of the Night.

Utilizing the high side of the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, Sam was all the way to fifth by the third round. Cracking the top three following a Lap 5 restart for Blake Hahn, who flipped in turn two without injury, Sam restarted third and began working a line unlike anyone on the racing surface.

Giving chase to Wayne Johnson, the Outlaw Wings No. 2c rolled the bottom while Hafertepe set a diamond through turns one and two, then low in three and four. From a half straightaway behind to Wayne's back bumper, the Hwy. 79 Collision No. 15h rolled to the race lead on Lap 10.

Finding the back of the field at the race's mid-point, Sam rolled into slower traffic with ease as the No. 15h was able to catch drivers slipping the bottom line, giving the resident of Sunnyvale a 4.852 second advantage at the checkered flag.

Wayne Johnson rolled across the line second with Aaron Reutzel third. Danny Jennings earned the final transfer into Saturday's A-Main. Dustin Morgan, while one spot shy of a transfer, picked up his first top-five of the 2017 season. Tommy Bryant sixth was trailed by Matt Covington, Danny Lasoski, Josh Baughman, and Tony Stewart who started 16th on the grid.
With 40 cars on hand, five Heat Races went to Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Danny Jennings, Wayne Johnson, James Mosher, and Tony Stewart. Qualifier wins were earned by Danny Lasoski, Dustin Morgan, and John Carney II. Two B-Feature scores went to Sammy Swindell and Alex Hill.

Tony Stewart's Texas Sprint Car Nationals presented by Machinery Auctioneers continues on Saturday, April 8, 2017 with Hot Laps getting underway at 7:00 P.M. (CDT). For more information, log onto www.texasmotorspeedway.com.

Hafertepe Perfect At The Lucas Oil Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals

MESQUITE, Texas (March 18, 2017) Sam Hafertepe, Jr. proved unstoppable at the 44th annual Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals as the Hwy. 79 Collision/Keith Dobbs Motorsports No. 15h sailed to his second victory in as many nights with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.

Having to bounce back from an inauspicious start that saw Sam slip back to sixth from a third starting spot, the point was held by Johnny Herrera with Justin Henderson in tow.

"You know, I looked like an idiot there early on. I think we fell back to sixth and that's not like us but we just had it a little too tight early on. I had them make a change after that 305cid A-Feature and we probably shouldn't have made the change, but it actually made our car great later on in the race," commented Hafertepe, who also topped the night's IMCA RACEsaver Sprint Car feature event. "I just have to say, hats off to everyone who helps make this thing happen."

Caution working Lap 6 as the leaders found the tail of the lead lap, the field rolled back to life with John Carney II taking over the runner-up position Lap 7 with Hafertepe back to third by Lap 8. Working into slower traffic, the leaders ran multiple grooves on the Devil's Bowl with Herrera working low in one and two, then high in three and four while Carney railed the cushion.

With momentum and traffic working to his favor, the Lubbock Wrecker Services No. 11x bolted to the lead on Lap 18. Taking over second two laps later, Hafertepe pursed Carney with great vigor; running down the No. 11x as the pair approached slower cars. Able to move the No. 15h through the different grooves of racing, Hafertepe took the point with eight laps to run.

Leaving Carney to battle for second with Herrera and Henderson, the No. 11x would see his night come to an early close due to a cut right rear tire that brought out the caution on Lap 24.

Keeping the Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 45x at bay on the restart, Johnny was left to contend with the NGK Spark Plugs No. 1 of Justin Henderson who grabbed away second on Lap 28, but there was not catching Hafertepe as the Texas native raced the win by 3.337 seconds.

Justin Henderson's runner-up finish was his second result in as many nights. Like Henderson, the No. 45x placed on the bronze step for the second night running. Improving his position by one from Friday night, Washington's Seth Bergman raced to a fourth place finish with Wayne Johnson rebound from a DNF on Friday night to round out Saturday's top-five.

Another driver turning a 180 on the weekend, a fresh bullet under the hood put Aaron Reutzel sixth with Sammy Swindell coming from 11th to seventh. Ray Allen Kulhanek crossed eighth with Sean McClelland ninth. Earning the CP-Carrillo Hard Charger of the Night, Zane Lawrence advanced eight spots to finish tenth.

Saturday saw 44 drivers returning to competition in the 44th Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals. Five Heat Races were topped by Scott Bogucki, Chris Martin, Kaley Gharst, Zane Lawrence, and Sean McClelland. Qualifier wins went to Skylar Gee, Wayne Johnson, and Aaron Reutzel. A pair of B-Mains went to Scott Bogucki and Zane Lawrence.

ASCS National Sprint Series

Hafertepe Dominates Lucas Oil ASCS Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals Opener

MESQUITE, Texas (March 17, 2017) Picking up seemingly where he left off in 2016, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. led start to finish to pick up his first win of the season with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network in the series opener at the 44th Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals.

"I don't know how good we really were. I thought I heard him [Henderson] behind me a few times but it may have very well be that we were just over turning it but I'll tell you what, that car on the restarts was just so good rotating the corner," commented Hafertepe.

"We had to make big changes after the Heat Race. We just weren't where we needed to be. Everybody thinks I know this place really well, and I thought I did too but we just had to go to work on the car again and that's what we did last year. If things weren't going good, we just went after it and gave the car what we think it needed."

Giving thanks to his crew, family, and fans Hafertepe followed up saying, "Right now I just have to say that I've got Shirley Kears in my thoughts and prayers for everything she's going through right now and I hope things get better soon."

Earning the outside of the front row, Hafertepe got the jump of pole sitter, Ryan Roberts, going into the first two turns. Chased by Justin Henderson through the opening laps, the BDS Motorsports No. 1 would get his first chance at the leader with a Lap 5 caution for Wayne Johnson who was having braking issues.

Unable to keep pace with Hafertepe's Hwy. 79 Collision No. 15h, the field went under the caution again on Lap 11.

Keeping the field at bay once again, the leaders quickly raced their way to the back of the field. Having to carefully time slide jobs through traffic, Henderson with Herrera in tow were able to close, but never able to capitalize as Sam Hafertepe, Jr. sped away to the victory by 1.786 second.
Chasing Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour points for the first time, Justin Henderson crossed runner-up in the NSCHoF No. 1.

"Sam is on a different level here than most so running second to him isn't bad. I don't know if we had anything for him. Lapped traffic was difficult but this EMI Chassis, Parker Engine was great. Bryan [Sundby] worked hard all night and gave me a good car and just have to thank BDS Motorsports," said Henderson of his runner-up result.

With the start of the race key to his success, Johnny Herrera took the race five wide on the opening lap to advance from eight to the final podium step.

"On the start, they left the top wide open. A few guys got tight there and I was able to sneak by and really, it was just a hope and a prayer. I knew we had to get there in a hurry before we fell in line because here, the guys that start up front tend to finish up front. Had I started front row, it would have been a different deal but hats off to Sam. I felt like we had a great car, and looking forward to tomorrow."

Racing back and forth with Seth Bergman throughout most of the A-Feature, John Carney II captured the final transfer spot into Saturday's championship feature event with Seth Bergman completing the top-five.

Moving up from 12th, Matt Covington came up to finish sixth with Blake Hahn seventh. Josh Baughman from 13th came up to eighth with Travis Rilat capturing the CP-Carrillo Hard Charger of the Night with a run from 18th to ninth. Advancing from 16th, Brandon Long completed the top-ten. Paring with the Griffith Truck and Equipment ASCS Gulf South Region, Ray Allen Kulhanek was the highest finishing regional driver.

The opening night of the Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals saw 48 drivers draw in for competition. Six Heat Races went to Josh Baughman, Johnny Herrera, Chad Wilson, John Carney II, Ryan Roberts, and Sean McClelland. Qualifiers were topped by Justin Henderson, Blake Hahn, and Wayne Johnson. The night's B-Mains went to Dustin Morgan and Travis Rilat.

ASCS National Sprint Series

Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Focused On Lucas Oil ASCS National Title Defense As Tour Opens At The Devil's Bowl Speedway

TULSA, Okla. (March 13, 2017) The 2017 season for the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network goes green this St. Patrick's Day Weekend at the Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas with the 44th running of the Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals.

A favorite destination for many on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network, the Devil's Bowl is the track of choice for defending series champion, Sam Hafertepe, Jr.

"Everybody knows Devil's Bowl Speedway is my favorite place to race, and to start the season off at a place like that means a lot. I'm excited to get there and I always feel like we're one of the cars to beat so to start the year out there makes me really confident about the season," commented Hafertepe who has two Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour triumphs at the Devil's Bowl Speedway.

Having to play a bit of catch up following the opening swing of 2016, that's something that Sam looks to rectify in order to get racing for points out of the way.

"Our weak spot last year was the start of the year and even with a couple solid runs after that, we didn't really get going until about June when the season really took off so what I'm focusing on this year is being up front from the get go and being in contention for wins right out of the gate. We just didn't have that last year so I feel like if we can do that, then hopefully we can get a handle on the points now and just focus on running our races."

No longer a young man, but not yet an old man, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. credits a lot of his success in 2016 to his maturity both on, and off the track saying, "I know that was probably the biggest key to our success is maturing as a driver. I've said for years that I have the talent and the ability, just mentally never focused hard enough and did the right things where last year, that was something I felt I did well and coming into this year I've been working on cutting down weight, getting in better shape, and just tidying up the loose ends we had last year."

Returning as the driver of Keith Dobbs Motorsports, the Hwy. 79 Collision/J&J Chassis No. 15h is one of 15 drivers who have made the choice to be a part of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network in 2017.

"To be honest, I think first and foremost people are starting to realize how good it is to race in the ASCS division. It's attracted a lot of teams and we've got a lot of good drives. Just going down the list, you've got a good mix of talent and there's no one on the list that doesn't have a chance to run up front and be in contention."

The 44th running of the Devil's Bowl Spring Nationals takes place on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18 with each night of racing getting underway at 8:00 P.M. By the numbers, this weekend stands to be the 87th and 88th nights of racing at the Devil's Bowl with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour since 1994. In the series last visit for the Winter Nationals on October 16 and 17, Johnny Herrera and John Carney II split the weekend.

The weekend also serves as the opener for the Griffith Truck and Equipment ASCS Gulf South Region which is co-sanctioning the two day affair. Channin Tankersley enters the year as the defending series champion.

Mark Smith is Once Again The King of the 360's

TAMPA, Fla. (February 25, 2017) For the second time, Pennsylvania's Mark Smith ended his weekend at Tampa's East Bay Raceway Park as the King of the 360's with the Lucas Oil ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints.

While Smith gave chase early on, the race on the start saw outside pole starter, Shawn Donath, taking the early advantage over Travis Rilat. Slowed on Lap 3, Rilat was not to be counted out as the No. 29 stole the advantage by just over two tenths before the caution flew again.

Slowed again with five laps compete, Rilat had company on the restart as fourth starting, Mark Smith, began his run on the point. Giving chase and challenging until Lap 13, the following revolution saw the No. M1 advance into the top spot.

Keeping pace with Smith, the race for the lead came quickly as the top two ran to slower traffic. Trading slide jobs at both ends of the East Bay Raceway Park, Smith was able to return the favor for every pass by the No. 29.

With varying slower traffic in play, that allowed Smith to gain a small advantage before the red lights blinked on for Caleb Helms on Lap 31. Helms was able to walk away unhurt. Two attempts at the restart, and both times Travis Rilat railed the cushion to a side-by-side race with Smith. Retaking the lead on the second attempt, Travis peddled hard on the high side with Smith patiently working the hub.

With the run on the thirty-fourth round, Smith rocketed back to the lead the following lap and would not be contested for his second King of the 360's title. Battling in the closing laps with a hard charging, Thomas Kennedy, the No. 21k advanced to the runner-up spot with Travis Rilat completing the night's podium.

Falling back in the early goings, Terry McCarl was able to rebound to finish fourth with Tampa's A.J. Maddox coming from 16th to complete the top-five. Chad Kemenah came home sixth with Danny Martin, Jr. seventh. Jason Sides was eighth with Tim Shaffer and Rico Abreu completing the top-ten.

East Bay Raceway Park begins their regular season on March 3, 2017. The full lineup of events can be found at www.eastbayraceway.com.

The Lucas Oil ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints returns to action at Southern Raceway in Milton, Fla. on March 11, 2017. For continued updates on the American Sprint Car Series, log onto www.ascsracing.com.
