“NIGHT BEFORE THE 500” MIDGET WINNER TARGETED FOR $20,000 PAYOUT MAY 29!

A prize of $20,000 awaits the winner of the May 29 “Night Before the 500” USAC Mopar Midget race at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis! The prize matches the largest single race winner’s share in Midget racing history and is a result of an endowment left by long-time Midget racing scribe and historian Crocky Wright, who passed away in December of 2009 at age 90.
The “Night Before the 500” Classic, was among beneficiaries of Mr. Wright’s last will and testament and the winner’s share matches the $20,000 claimed by Jason Leffler for his victory at the 1999 “Summer Sizzle” at Indianapolis’ 16th Street Speedway.
"The $20,000 payday this year only adds to the lure of this race,” says Bryan Clauson, who won USAC’s 2010 Narional Driver Championship and Mopar National Midget title. “The Night Before the 500 midget race is one of the crown jewels of midget racing, and it is definitely circled on every midget driver’s calendar each year. With a winners share that matches the highest ever in our sport, fans will see a lot of tough guys show up for this one. After finishing second the last two years in this race, I can't think of a better year to finally breakthrough and add my name to the winners list for this great event."
The “Night Before the 500” race is one of America’s most traditional motorsports events and has made its home at the Indianapolis oval since 1980. It was also held at the then-named Indianapolis Raceway Park from 1969-1971 and 1974-1978. Other Indiana facilities which have hosted the race include 16th Street Speedway (1948-1958), Kokomo Speedway (1959-1961 and 1965-1968), the Indianapolis Speedrome (1962-1964 and 1979) and the Indiana State Fairgrounds (1972-73).
Tanner Swanson of Kingsburg, Calif. would like nothing better than to repeat as the race winner. “This is going to be huge. Repeating as the race winner would be one thing but to take home that kind of money would be fantastic. Last year I hadn’t even planned on running the race. The deal came together at the last minute and we put the seat in the car Tuesday, the motor Wednesday and the driver on Saturday! I had never turned a lap at the track until the night we won! I’d like to walk away with that trophy again and put my name in the record books alongside Jason Leffler as the biggest prize winners in Midget racing history.”
To put this race in some perspective, Mel Kenyon won 17 races on his way to the 1967 USAC National Midget championship. His total take for the 49 Midget races that year was just over $11,000!
The 1999 “Summer Sizzle” victory still gives Jason Leffler a considerable amount of pride. “I was nearly broke when I won that race at 16th Street,” Leffler admits. “It’s really special that Crocky has done this and hopefully some racer can share the joy I had when I collected that big paycheck. It’s going to be a special night for Midget racing and I only wish I could be there. We all share Crocky’s passion for the sport and I’m happy to see this happen at a race I will always cherish having won (2002).”
Crocky Wright’s legacy is one of extreme dedication to the sport of Midget auto racing. A 2005 inductee into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame, he was presented his award that year by his hero, Tony Stewart, whom many consider was a key beneficiary of Crocky’s many columns and writings. A racer himself, Wright, whose real German-born name was Ernest Schlausky, witnessed his first Midget race the same year the sport was born, 1933, and is one of only two motorcycle stuntmen honored by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the other being Evel Knievel! In 2004 Crocky was awarded the prestigious “Jim Blunk Award” at the USAC Awards Banquet in honor of his many contributions to the sport he loved.
“We feel this purse will add to the excitement and historic significance this race holds in the race community,” said Wes Collier, general manager of Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. “The purse will pull the finest Midget racers from across the country and fans are sure to see thrilling racing during the feature event as they battle to the checkered flag.”
“It’s a fitting tribute to Crocky that this race honors his memory,” adds USAC President/CEO Kevin Miller. “He was so much a part of the fabric of this sport and we are honored to be part of this celebration of his life and his contributions to Midget auto racing.”
For the sake of history, it should be noted that Dave Steele claimed the largest single night payout in Midget racing history in 2002 when he won back-to-back 25-lap feature races at the then-named Indianapolis Raceway Park. Those two wins, worth $10,280, earned a bonus of $50,000 posted by a lubricant company, plus other contingencies, resulting in a total take for Steele of $64,560!

JONES, GARDNER RENEW RIVALRY NEXT WEEK AS AMSOIL SPRINTS KICK OFF 2011 AT OCALA SPEEDWAY
Posted by: | CommentsFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FEBRUARY 9, 2011
DICK JORDAN
Defending AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Champion Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. opens his quest for a record fifth series championship Feb. 17-19 at Ocala (Fla.) Speedway in the second annual “Bubba Army Sprint Nationals.”
Jones, whose four series titles (2005, 2007, 2009-1010) matched Steve Butler’s feat (1986-87-88-90), nosed out Damion Gardner of Concord, Calif. by 132 points for last year’s National crown. Gardner, however, was the 2010 star of the “Bubba Army Sprint Nationals,” winning both feature events at East Bay Raceway.
While Jones pilots a #20 Bass Pro Shops car entered by NASCAR and USAC veteran Tony Stewart, Gardner will compete in his familiar Pace Lighting #71. Last year Jones finished fifth and seventh in the two Florida openers, while Gardner led all 30 laps both nights.
The 2011 series will be contested entirely on dirt, as opposed to the dirt-pavement series conducted in 2010. On the dirt last year, Jones outpointed Gardner by 179. All eight of Jones’ victories came on dirt and all five of Gardner’s also came on the dirt.
Jones and Gardner will have to turn back challenges from some of the nation’s top dirt-track pilots in the three nights of racing at the 3/8-mile dirt oval. Indiana Sprint Week Champion Jon Stanbrough, 2010 USAC National Drivers Champion Bryan Clauson and USAC Triple Crown Champion Jerry Coons Jr. are expected to be among drivers competing in the Feb. 17-19 races. Coons will be trying to extend the all-time career mark for USAC National Sprint car victories set by his team, Hoffman Auto Racing of Milford, Ohio. The Hoffman’s have 76 wins to their credit, dating all the way back to 1961.
Race fans will be treated to a pre-race party on Wednesday night, Feb. 16, at Ker’s Wing House in Ocala and Saturday night’s entertainment package at Ocala Speedway includes a performance by the rock band Red Society.

PROVIDENCE, RI February 6, 2011 . . . Ted Christopher likes this indoor racing gig.
He proved why Saturday night as he captured the TQ-Midget Coffee Cup at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
The victory was Christopher’s second consecutive in as many weeks as he won the Gambler’s Classic in Atlantic City, N.J.
With his most recent victory, which was his fifth in 10 outings in TQ-Midget action, Christopher of Plainville, Conn., captured more than $9,000. In addition to the winnings in Atlantic City, N.J., and Providence, R.I., he won the Leonard J. Sammons Jr Indoor Series for having the best overall finishers over the past two weeks.
“This is absolutely great,” Christopher said. “You can’t ask for a better way to start the racing season.”
Christopher topped Ryan Smith of Kunkletown, Pa., in the 40-lap race. Tim Buckwalter of Douglassville, Pa., was third, followed by Stewart Friesen of Niagara-on-the-Lakes, Ont., and Mike Lichty of Innerkip, Ont.
“It means a lot to win in these cars and at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center,” Christopher said. “Just last two years ago, we were all anxious about finally having a race in Rhode Island and to win a race in the northeast with all the race fans is pretty special.”
Christopher started fifth and really did not pose a threat until the 10th lap.
Billy Pauch led the first four circuits before Lou Cicconi Jr took over on a restart.
As the cars started to maneuver through lapped traffic on lap 15, Christopher used the slower cars and some aggressive moves to generate the lead from Cicconi.
When the race went to caution on lap 19, Cicconi showed his displeasure with Christopher.
“I guess he wasn’t too happy,” Christopher said. “He pulled up beside me and gave me a gesture with his arm and he bumped me a few times, but he thanked me after I won.”
Cicconi fell from the runner-up spot on lap 31 when his engine overheated.
Smith, who secured a ride for the Coffee Cup on Tuesday, did his best to get Christopher over the final nine circuits but nothing materialized.
“It was good we got to stick with him there at the end,” Smith said. “I figured he would be gone.”
Double heat events were run as qualifiers. Billy Pauch won his two heat events, while Christopher, Joey Payne, Matt Janisch, Frank Fischer, Friesen and Mike Stefanik had one win each.
Mike Osite and Tim Proctor won the B-Mains.
Bryan Shields of Bethlehem, Pa. won a thrilling 25-lap Champ Kart main as he took the lead with two laps remaining in the main event,
Nick Hadden of Vernon, Conn., was second, followed by DJ Shaw of Center Conway, NH; Mike Perry of Dighton, Mass; and Matt Fenn of West Springfield, Mass.
Double heat events went to Shaw (two), Gavin Soraghon, Gary Putnam Jr, Perry and Hadden.

The Tri-State area surrounding the Phillipsburg Mall in Phillipsburg, New Jersey enjoyed a wealth of great raceways dating back to World War II days and followed into the 50's years and beyond, and with that one of the great racers of the day, local racing ace Carl "Fuzzy' Van Horn cast his dreams, hopes and dollars in the local region not far from the Mall site and began building a dirt track fashioned after the old Pitman-Alcyon Speedway that was closed somewhere around 1960. Van Horn opened the Harmony Speedway in 1963 and then budding racing great great Sammy Beavers captured the initial grand opening night event. While the speedway never enjoyed the success Van Horn envisioned, the legacy of the Harmony race track and the many more speedways in the Tri-State area that hosted racing events, brings each of us to the fourth Annual IRCO Community Federal Credit Union Dirt Track Heroes Car Show set to return to the Phillipsburg Mall in 2011 with opening day set for Sunday, March 6. The show will continue through Saturday, night, March 12. The Phillipsburg Mall, located on Route 22 East in Phillipsburg, NJ is a popular location for this event and will offer a broad variety of race cars on display throughout the course of the week long show. Last year 122 cars from all divisions of racing filled the Mall space as the past, present and future of racing are highlighted in a week long show that celebrates the love each of us has found in attending races and meeting so many good people associated with the sport. With an exciting schedule of events to whet the appetite of any true race fan, large crowds are expected to "over flow" the Phillipsburg Mall. This event is a Mall favorite and one of the leading attractions, drawing record crowds for the week-long event.
The race cars are on display for various reasons. The restored race cars represent the past or as many race fans refer to as the "Golden Era" of racing. While some of the cars in attendance are original works, some of the race cars are replicars, re-created to look much like the racers the legendary drivers drove to glory at one of the many speedways that hosted the events. Those great cars and the saved memories gain much more impact when the fans have the opportunity to chat with many of the drivers who will be making special appearances during the week long event. All historical racing groups including Reading, Flemington, Harmony, Dorney Park and Nazareth will have their memorabilia on display and their scrapbooks open for the fans to take another long look at the glory years of racing and possibly find a picture or two they want to purchase as a keepsake of past glory or racing exploits.
Current day race cars are displayed by race teams to gain for their sponsors additional exposure and create an interest for mall walkers to visit a race track in their area. New cars are displayed for similar reasons, and to also show the new and changing technology of the race cars. You can visit the IRCO Dirt Track Heroes Car Show and on any given night, meet the drivers who pilot these four wheel high powered race cars. Many race tracks participate in this event as a way to distribute their schedules for the coming season and meet and greet their loyal fans and hopefully, make some new fans to attend their racing events.
Hall of Fame driver Carl Van Horn will be at the Mall on special nights to sign autographs and to talk about the 46 seasons he spent behind the wheel of a high powered Modified. His Grandson David will have the family hot rod in the show and will be part of the New Egypt Speedway night at the Mall. From the Flemington group it is reported that Stan "The Man" Ploski will be signing autographs at their display. URC will have representation from talented Jonathan Swanson, Mark Bitner and his Bitner Automotive and Performance sponsored sprinter and up and coming local talent Chris Weiss. Stephanie Stevens, the talented local female racer from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, will have her new TSRS 305 sprinter on hand for the event as she steps into a new phase of her racing career in 2011. "The Negotiator" Ricky Yetter will possibly have both of his race cars on display as the Wilson Boro resident prepares for not only a big season in racing but is running for District Court Judge as well. The "Rieglesville Rocket" Larry Lippincott will have his mount on display after a brilliant season at the Bridegport Speedway where he scored four wins and lost the point title by one single digit. His teammate Frank Dorry will have his car on display as well. Frank was 7th in the final points at Bridgeport a season ago. The "Magic Man" Mike Mammana will have his spruced up hot rod on display during the show. Mike rode the strength of two wins and the point lead into the final night of competition at Big Diamond only to be wrecked early in the event. The Gilmore Brothers, Mark and Brian will have their race cars on display. The New Jersey based brother act will go in separate directions this season as Brian will go after the 600 Wingless title at the Hamlin Speedway while brother Mark will test the waters in ARDC competition as he vies for Rookie of the Year in the series after a championhip season came his way in 2009 at Hamlin and he followed it up with a runner-up performance in 2010. Mark will be aboard a former Drew Heistand race car. More and more drivers will be referenced in upcoming stories as the pieces continue to fall into place for this great annual event.
Entries continue to be accepted to display in the IRCO Dirt Track Heroes Show. More information is available by calling: 443-513-4456 or you may complete the entry form located on the home page of the: www.thunderonthehillracingseries.com web site. Follow the simple instructions posted on the web site to register. Space is available for race cars of all divisions, vendors and race tracks as well.
In the previous events, cars that were on display include big and small block Modifieds, Sportsman, Micro-Sprints, ARDC Midgets, URC Sprints, Late Models, go-karts and a broad variety of vintage and restored race cars. Several race tracks will also use this event as an opportunity to get the word out on their up-coming 2011 racing season. New Egypt, Grandview, Bridgeport, Hamlin, Kutztown, Borger's and Snydersville will again be involved in the 2011 show. The week-long event will set aside one evening to salute the "Stars of Tomorrow" with a special night set aside for the budding young racing talents competing with the many quarter midget clubs in the area.
For the fourth consecutive year, CARQUEST Gasoline Alley and the Pados Brothers will host the nightly events and interviews along with some guest announcers. Bobby Stull, Joel Murns and Justin Beltrame have already signed on to play a part in the show. The taping of the show will be on Sunday, March 6th for a two hour span that will be aired the following evening through WALN at: www.walncableradio.com In 2010, 368 drivers, owners, racing legends and track promoters were interviewed or featured during the nightly activities.
The IRCO Dirt Track Heroes Car Show will again offer a great keepsake event souvenir program book and shirt. The Phillipsburg Mall is open Sunday 11 AM to 6 PM; Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 9 PM.
IRCO Community Federal Credit Union remains the lead show sponsor since the event first opened in 2008. More information on IRCO is available at the company's web site at: www.ircocu.com or please contact Greg Collins via e-mail at: gcollins@ircocu.com

PROVIDENCE, RI February 2, 2011 . . . The driver besting all others last weekend in Atlantic City, NJ., is looking forward to this weekend’s Coffee Cup indoor TQ-Midget race at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn., is looking to add another notch to his TQ-Midget earnings this weekend as he’ll drive the potent No. 13 car this Saturday night. Christopher made a statement in the TQ-Midget class as he dominated the Gambler’s Classic at Boardwalk Hall.
“I am looking forward to getting to Providence,” Christopher said. “We have a fast car and we know it will just as fast in Providence.”
Christopher is one of four different drivers who have previous TQ-Midget victories at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Mike Iles, Mike Lichty and Mike Stefanik are the other victors in TQ-Midget action.
“The event is a must-see for race fans in the northeast,” Christopher said. “This breaks up the monotony of the long winter season. Fans can come and watch some of the tightest and closest racing they’ll ever see.”
Christopher has a monetary incentive to run all-out this Saturday night. If he can win the Coffee Cup, his earnings in a span of a week from racing indoors could be near $10,000. He earned $5,000 last Saturday night in Atlantic City, N.J., and another $3,000 awaits the winner of the Coffee Cup.
Christopher won multiple contingency cash awards and bonuses in Atlantic City, N.J. Also, he leads the Leonard J. Sammons Jr. Indoor Winter Series, which pays the champion an additional $500.
Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I., enters the Coffee Cup as the defending champion. Stefanik thrilled the homestate crowd last season.
“Winning that race was exciting for me,” Stefanik said. “It is pretty right racing, very challenging. There are an array of drivers coming who are very talented and that’s what is so enticing.”
One of those drivers is asphalt Modified standout Woody Pitkat of Stafford Springs, Conn. Pitkat will make his indoor debut at the Coffee Cup.
“It’ll be interesting,” said Pitkat who finished second to Keith Rocco in the ’10 SK-Modified point standings at Stafford Motor Speedway. “It’s another notch in the belt.”
Pitkat will drive a TQ-Midget prepared by indoor expert Lou Cicconi Jr.
“I know that I am getting in a good ride,” Pitkat said. “Lou has a great reputation for putting great cars on the race track and I am anxious for this opportunity.”
In addition, Stewart Friesen, a 25-time winner outdoors last season, found a ride with Mike Iles after a dismal outing in Atlantic City, N.J. The Niagara-on-the-Lakes, Ontario, native is always a top contender indoors.
The one-day event will be action packed with grandstands opening at 6 p.m. Time trials for the TQ-Midgets and Champ Karts will follow at 6:05. Race action, which includes 10 qualifying events, begins at 7, followed by feature events for both divisions.
Tickets for the Coffee Cup are available at the Dunkin’ Donuts box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000.
