Perrego Victory Caps Electric “Battle at the Bowl” Event at Devil’s Bowl Speedway

Root beats Drellos in King of Dirt Crate Modified thriller

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Anthony Perrego beat the most talented field of dirt Modified drivers ever assembled at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday, August 9, winning the second annual “Battle at the Bowl” Big Block/Small Block Challenge before an electrified, pandemic-weary crowd. With 65 combined entries vying for 30 starting spots in the 50-lap main event, Perrego came away with the big win and a check for $7,500.

Seating was limited to a sold-out 750 masked-and-socially-distanced grandstand spectators and about 400 infield drive-in fans – many of whom were attending their first race of the season amid COVID-19 restrictions – and the appreciative gathering made enough noise to substitute for 5,000. Cheers rained down during the night on winners Perrego, Jessey Mueller, Mat Williamson, and King of Dirt Racing Crate Modified Series winner Kevin Root.

Home-track favorite Mueller struck first, winning the 25-lap feature race for the Big Block Modifieds. The Chestertown, N.Y., racer – who started his career at Devil’s Bowl as a teenager – was good from the outset, winning his qualifying heat, starting on the pole of the feature, and leading every lap on his way to the 13th win of his career at the Vermont track. Mueller won $1,500 with his victory.

Canadian racer Williamson was one of 11 drivers who entered both the Big Block and Small Block divisions, beginning his impressive night as the runner-up to Mueller. Equally strong in both classes was Erick Rudolph, who finished third. Marc Johnson and Perrego rounded out the top five in the Big Block race, which drew 27 cars.

With 38 Small Block cars in the pit area, qualifying for just the 25-lap race was challenging enough. Lance Willix and Stewart Freisen led the field to the green flag, with Friesen leading the first 15 circuits. Williamson, of St. Catherines, Ont., was smooth and calculated, though, and drove past Friesen 16 laps in to sail away with the win.

Rudolph moved forward from seventh to take second place away from Friesen late. Friesen finished third ahead of Demetrios Drellos – who raced in all three divisions on the card – and a hard-charging Larry Wight.

Perrego and Willix were the darlings of the unique “Pole Shuffle” event, which saw the top eight finishers from each feature square off in short-distance, March Madness-style elimination races to determine the first 16 starting positions of the 50-lap Challenge. Underdog Willix won two rounds in the Small Block bracket and Perrego also advanced twice, squaring off against each other for the Small Block finale, which Perrego won. Jimmy Phelps and defending Pole Shuffle and Battle at the Bowl champion Matt Sheppard each advanced twice in the Big Block bracket, with Phelps beating Sheppard heads-up in the Big Block finale.

Perrego’s Small Block car ran the inside lane in the one-on-one, green-white-checker Pole Shuffle championship finale, with Phelps stuck to him on the outside lane. The fans cheered loudly as Perrego crossed the line first to earn the pole position for the main event.

It was all Perrego in the 50-lap main event, as the Montgomery, N.Y., racer led every step of the way despite restarts on laps 9 and 38. Phelps ran second until the final restart, when Marc Johnson, Williamson, and Rudolph – who struggled in the Pole Shuffle and started 13th in the main event – entered the picture. Perrego continued with the lead and stretched out ahead for a few laps before Williamson and Rudolph began reeling him in. The trio ran nose-to-tail in tight formation as they navigated lapped traffic with two laps to go, and Rudolph snuck past Williamson in the final moments.

Perrego’s Superior Remodeling No. 44 Teo Small Block sped across the finish line for the win ahead of Rudolph, who barely beat Williamson to the line. Johnson and Phelps completed the top five, followed in order by Wight, Willix, Mike Mahaney, Mike Maresca (from 22nd on the starting grid), and Sheppard.

The King of Dirt Racing (KOD) Crate Modified Series was the undercard on the evening, but the 40-lap “Leon Gonyo Memorial” race once again stole the show. Invader Kevin Root made the long haul across the New York Thruway from Geneva, N.Y., to capture the victory in his first-ever start at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, defeating a field of 30 feature event starters and 49 total starters.

Like Perrego in the Big Block/Small Block Challenge, Root set the pace before catching lapped traffic in the final laps, allowing Demetrios Drellos to catch him in the last two circuits. Drellos, the Sunday-night point leader in the track’s weekly Pepsi Sportsman Modified division, used a three-wide move to take the lead to complete lap 39, running on the outside with Root on the bottom lane and the lapped car of Joey Scarborough in the middle. Drellos got ahead in Turn 1 on the final lap, but Root stepped on the gas and reclaimed the top spot coming to the finish line, taking the win by just 0.187-seconds.

Root was ecstatic in victory lane and celebrated on the roof of his F.X. Caprara Honda No. 34 car with his son, Nick, and then made a memorable speech during his interview that had the crowd both laughing and cheering.

Kenny Tremont Jr. continued a recent string of good finishes in third place, and Justin Comes was strong as the top Vermonter in fourth. Jack Speshock drove from 26th starting position to beat Adam Pierson for fifth place. Defending KOD champion Bobby Hackel finished seventh, ahead of rookie Justin Stone, polesitter and early leader Scott Duell, and Brian Calabrese.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway returns to action on Sunday, August 16, at 7:00 p.m., with a full card of Pepsi Sportsman Modifieds, O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsmen, Pro Stocks, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprints, as well as the Champlain Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds. Cozze Captures First New Egypt Speedway Mod Win In A Decade; Bitner Bags USAC East Main

New Egypt, NJ - Frank Cozze returned to New Egypt Speedway Modified Victory Lane for the first time in almost a decade on Saturday night aboard the Dave Renaldo owned No. 401. The two-time Modified track last graced New Egypt Speedway victory lane on September 4, 2010.

Steve Davis led the Vahlco Wheels Modified field to the green-flag but it would be Kory Fleming leading lap number one. The first yellow flag of the event flew with a lap completed for Jimmy Horton in turn number four. On the restart Cozze shot to second and began to stalk Fleming for the lead. The second caution of the event flew on lap five for Matt Stangle stopping in the short shoot heading into turn three. When green replaced yellow Cozze shot to the outside of Fleming in turn one and emerged the leader on the backstretch. Debris was the cause of caution number three on lap seven.

Cozze jumped back out to the lead with a new challenger in PJ Oliver for the lead. Once out in front Cozze would maintain the lead until the yellow flew again on lap 14, this time for Cale Ross who had spun in turn one.

Again Cozze shot out to the lead on the restart, but he would then have a new second-place man in Dakota Kessler who dove to the inside of Oliver as the field entered turn one. Kessler would remain in the runner-up spot for the next six laps as now David VanHorn entered the picture as Cozze’s latest challenger.

As the laps started to wind down, Cozze would reach lapped traffic on lap 23 with VanHorn on his horse trying to catch Cozze at a frantic pace. At the two-to-go signal VanHorn appeared to be closing in on Cozze but he would run out of time as Cozze scored his first star in the New Egypt Speedway win column since September 4, 2010 and his 27th overall at the Route 539 speed plant. VanHorn would come home second with Billy Pauch Jr., Dakota Kessler and PJ Oliver completing the top five.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been here. This has always been home, this the place I love coming to. The fans are the greatest here, I think,” said Cozze post race. “It feels good to finally have the monkey off our back. I gotta thank Dave Renaldo, we’ve had a rough couple weeks and he’s gotten us everything we need. I can’t thank the guys on my team, they all worked so hard. It was a good win tonight.

Mark Bitner led wire-to-wire in USAC East Coast Sprint Car competition but it would not come as easy as that sounded. Bitner led the field to the green but before a lap would be completed JR Berry would spin in turn number three. When the green flag flew again, Bitner jumped back out to the lead with the best battle on the speedway being for second between Kyle Lick, Ryan Watt and Chris Allen Jr. Allen would rim-ride his way to second and begin his chase of Bitner who now was roughly a half a straightaway out in front.

With Bitner now entering lapped traffic on lap 15, that allowed Allen to close up right to the tail tank of Bitner as the two weaved in and out of lapped traffic all while battling for the race lead. Entering turn three Allen threw his No. 71 machine hard into the corner trying to drive around Bitner but he was not able to make it stick and slipped up the race track allowing Bitner to pull back away. The yellow flag flew for the final time on lap 23 when David Swanson came to a stop in turns one and two setting up a green-white-checkered finish. When racing resumed Allen threw everything he had at Bitner but it would be to no avail as Bitner picked up the win at what is considered to be his “home track” Allen would be the runner-up followed by Ryan Watt, a hard charging Billy Pauch Jr. and defending USAC East Coast Sprint Car champion Steven Drevicki.

Howie Finch picked up his first career Sportsman win aboard his Ice Less LLC No. 4 machine and the first for a 604 Crate Motor. Finch took over the lead from race long leader Jimmy Amato and never looked back. Ryan Heim would finish second followed by Dan Fleming in third who utilized a 602 Crate, David Burns and Joseph Brown.

Shanon Mongeau was the victor in the Street Stock event, he was followed to the stripe by Bill Liedtka, Brian Ludwig, Spider Ensinger Sr. and Sean Wall.

Paul Mancini won the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman event.

BLAKE BARNEY GRABS CAREER FIRST WALL MODIFIED WIN

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Driving the bright red No. 14 for “Team 14,” one of the most famous and successful racing teams in Wall Stadium Speedway's 70 year history, Blake Barney of Jackson raced to his career first Modified stock car victory in the 40-lapper on Saturday night. Barney's victory came on the evening when the speedway's loyal followers honored the memory of photographer JJ Lane who passed away from natural causes during the off season.

Tyler Truex of Mayetta jumped to the early lead as Brick's Dom Fattaruso ran second. Barney had advanced to third by the ten lap mark and vaulted into second just past halfway. Lap 30 offered the final caution of he event when Robert French of Howell and Holmdel's Andrew Krause tangled in turn three. Lining up to the outside of Truex on the rolling restart, Barney made the outside lane work and powered to the lead for good.

Truex crossed the finish line second, but lost the position when it was found during post race inspection that his team had mistakenly bolted on a tire that was not recorded in the team's tire bank. That elevated Howell's Jimmy Blewett to second, with defending champ Steven Reed of Jackson, Fattaruso and Brick's Eddie McCarthy rounding out the top five.

“I want to thank my mother, my father and grandfather for all they have done for me,” Barney said in the winner's circle. “I knew that I was stepping into some big shoes when I started to drive this car. It is an honor to drive for a team that has had so many great drivers. The car is working real well on the outside here. I knew if I could get up to second I would have a chance.”

With just one early caution flag slowing the test, Neptune City's Bryan O'Shea used power and handling to race from an 11th starting spot to win his third straight 25-lapper for the Factory Stocks. Early race leader Kevin Flores of Brick and Howell's Brian Osborn crossed the finish line second and third but lost those spots after post-race inspections. Billy Both of Rahway and Howell's John Carpenter then wrapped up the top three, while Mike Montano of Freeport, N.Y. and Scott Riggleman on Manchester were fourth and fifth.

After suffering through bad fortunes in the first two events of the season, Jarret DiGiantomasso raced to victory in the Sportsman 25-lapper. Brick's Robert Sutphin was runner-up, with Manahawkin's Jake Nelke, Lanoka Harbor's Jonathan Laureigh and Neil Rutt III of Edison third through fifth.

Mike Alcaro took the lead on an early restart and raced on to his first Legend Cars 25-lap win of the year. Waldwick's Quinn Trimmer, Little Silver's Peter Bruno, Colin Milroy and Eugene Drew were second through fifth.

Buddy Sload won the 25-lap main event for the traveling TQ Midgets with Joey Bailey, Ryan Tidman, Kyle Taraska and Jeff Kott the remainder of the top five.

The 2020 Saturday night regular season continues this Saturday (August 15) evening with the Modifieds competing in the annual running of the 125-lap Garden State Classic. Factory Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks and Limited Late Models will also see action in 25-lap main events. The pit area will open at 12:30 p.m. Grandstands will open at 4:30 p.m., qualifying starts at 5:30 p.m. and main event action starts at 7:00 p.m.

Current plans call for Saturday night racing action to continue through early October with schedule details at www.wallspeedwayracing.com.

Wall Stadium is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number is 732-681-6400 and email address is ckmotorsports@aol.com.

DEFENDING GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY CHAMPIONS, HOWARD AND BRIGHTBILL, EARN NASCAR ADVANCE AUTO PARTS WEEKLY SERIES WINS ON SATURDAY NIGHT

BECHTELSVILLE, PA. August 9, 2020 . . . Duane Howard, the defending Grandview Speedway NASCAR T.P.Trailers Modified point champion, sidelined early in the Forrest Rogers Memorial race the previous Saturday night with shock problems, was back with a vengeance this time and became the seventh different feature winner this season by taking home the checkered in the 30-lap T.P. Trailers NASCAR Modified Advance Auto Parts feature. It was Howard’s first win of the year at the 1/3-mile oval moving his career win total to 78.

Another defending point champion struggling had been Brad Brightbill. He finally had a change of luck to become the seventh different 25-lap T.P. Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman feature winner which was also his first win of the season and 11th career triumph.

Providing the feature winners met the necessary requirements, they received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Howard and Brightbill. Decker Swinehart earned an extra $100 bonus from the track for being the highest crate engine Sportsman racer to finish.

Polesitter and rookie Darrin Schuler set the pace for seven laps while Mark Kratz, Kenny and Brett Gilmore and Ron Haring Jr. juggled positions behind him. Howard joined the mix with five laps in the books as he advanced from 12th to fifth.

Ron Myers brought out the seventh lap caution when he slowed in the second turn. On the restart Howard, who by this time was running second, put the Norm Hansell owned No. 357 at the head of the pack.

Swapping paint behind him were Doug Manmiller, Craig Von Dohren, Schuler and K. Gilmore which allowed him to open some daylight.

The pack regrouped on the 14th lap when Jared Umbenhauer and Mike Lisowski tangled in the second turn as a result of the cars ahead of them dicing for positions giving no margin to error creating the situation. Despite Manmiller’s attempts to overtake Howard on the restart Howard was still in front.

Mike Gular, on the move from his 21st starting grid after winning the consi and running fifth, brought out the caution. Sparks were coming from his car previously bringing him to a stop in turn two and the yellow to be thrown. As action resumed Howard was off and running with Manmiller, Von Dohren, Briggs Danner and Kevin Hirthler right behind waiting for a Howard false move in hopes of advancement.

Brett Kressley, last week’s feature winner, set up a one lap shoot out when he stopped in the first turn with mechanical problems. Kressley, who went pit side earlier in the event, one of the previous caution periods and rejoined the pack in last, was running a solid fifth when misfortune struck. That didn’t deter Howard as he kept the momentum going and went on to the winner’s circle. Chasing him across the line were Manmiller, Von Dohren, Danner and Ryan Grim. Sixth through tenth were Hirthler, who was the Hard Charger coming from 22nd; K. Gilmore, Umbenhauer, Dillon Steuer, a rookie racer in his first outing; and Justin Grim.

Ray Swinehart, Schuler, Haring Jr. and Eric Biehn won the heats. The consies went to Gular and Hirthler.

Sportsman action saw B.J. Joly finally have a change of luck and show the way for two laps before Brad Arnold spun in the fourth turn for the yellow. Decker Swinehart became the new leader on the restart while Joly, Mike Mammana, Jesse Landis and Brid Brightbill tousled for positions.

By the 11th lap Brightbill advanced to second in pursuit of getting past Swinehart for first.

The red was thrown on the 13th lap after Mark Gaugler rode the second turn wall. When action went green again Brightbill shot past Swinehart on the outside and into the lead.

The battle for second through fifth was now between Swinehart, Mammana, Joly and Jack Butler.

On the 14th lap Mark Kemmerer got into Joly, had him sideways, but Joly somehow saved the car and kept going without an accident, but it cost him several positions as the field went by without incident on their part.

Butler took over second on the 16th lap and set his sights on Brightbill, but his quest ended on the 23rd lap when he pulled into the infield out of competition.

Brightbill never faltered and went on to score the win. Finishing second was Mammana followed by Kemmerer, Swinehart and Brian Hirthler. Rounding out the top ten were Landis, Kyle Smith, Cole Stangle, Joly and Nate Brinker.

Heats were won by Tom Miller, Landis and Nate Mohr. Brinker won the consi.

The 3-lap Diamond Disposal Cash Dash sponsored by Sportsman driver John Mc Govern worth $100 to the winner went to Ryan Beltz. Kemmerer received $75 with Brad Arnold getting $50. Rather than it being heat winners, it was the sixth place finishers competing. Scott Kohler actually finished sixth in the third heat, but opted out which put Kemmerer in the field.

Coming up on Saturday, August 15th, is a tripleheader show featuring the T.P.Trailers NASCAR Modifieds, T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman and Blast From the Past Vintage racers.
