TYLER THOMAS FINDS SMACKDOWN REDEMPTION AT KOKOMO

Kokomo, Indiana......August 24, 2018 - "Smackdown" can find a way to toy with one's emotions from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows on occasion.
Tyler Thomas has lived on both ends of the spectrum within the last calendar year, seeing near-certain victory slip from his grasp at the last moment in 2017. But the Collinsville, Okla. native decided to place fate into his own hands Friday, leading the final half of night two of "Smackdown VII" to earn his first career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory. Meanwhile, his victory was also the first USAC score for longtime series car owner and sponsor Epperson Racing.
"I don't even know what to say; I'm kind of scatterbrained right now," a stunned T. Thomas exclaimed. "Thank you, Tony Epperson, Millie and their entire family for giving me a shot. Our first outing was Indiana Sprint Week and we kind of had a rough week. It hasn't been that easy this week either, but we sure as hell got the job done tonight."
The combination had shown speed in their limited appearances together over the last month, but luck never seemed to find its way to them until Friday where he launched his 30-lap assault from the outside of the second row.
Robert Ballou owned the first lap, riding the cushion to a 10-car-length advantage by the conclusion of lap one and would own the first half of the feature as well, occupying the top spot for the first 15 laps. Meanwhile, T. Thomas worked his way up to second on the opening lap, getting around Justin Grant and Jarett Andretti to slot into the runner-up position behind Ballou.
"I was just trying to follow Robert there for the first half of the race and maybe wait until the end to make a move," Thomas explained. "I really just wanted to finish and lock it in for tomorrow. (The track) was tricky and I about turned it over myself in (turns) one and two."
It was a true test of skill and bravery in turn two, which sucked in a number of victims throughout the night. Clinton Boyles flipped on his lid on the tenth lap. Then, just three laps later, Andretti tagged the turn two concrete while running third and began flipping wildly. Fourth-place runner Kevin Thomas, Jr. had no time to react and mashed into Andretti's ride mid-tumble and began flipping as well. Both drivers walked away unharmed. Thomas actually restarted following repairs in the work area and finished with a 14th place result.
When action resumed, Ballou appeared unfazed up front, riding by his lonesome until the 16th circuit when he too gnashed the turn two wall of voodoo and flipped. He walked away uninjured. By virtue, T. Thomas inherited the lead for the lap 16 restart, but he assumed control with none other than Tyler Courtney on his tail tank. He being the winner of the past three "Smackdown" features dating to 2017, not to mention last year's Saturday night finale in which he defeated T. Thomas for the win on the final restart.
T. Thomas' and his new Maxim chassis were determined to not let history repeat itself down the stretch as Courtney inched forward ever closer in the final laps until 2017 series Rookie of the Year Stevie Sussex became the fourth and final flipper of the feature within the confines of the turn two concrete from which he walked away.
T. Thomas was keen on making patience and focus his mantra in the latter stages, easier to say than to do in a pressurized environment, with a first victory cooling on the window sill, just within sight and with all five senses stimulated.
"For the last half, I really focused on calming down and maybe enter slower and not hit the wall as hard," T. Thomas said. "It's really hard to do when you're leading, and you haven't won yet."
On the final lap with Courtney in hot pursuit, T. Thomas banged the turn two wall on exit, thrusting his machine forward with a bit of bite down the back straightaway. However, the rubber to concrete meeting for Courtney in turn two was just a little too much, knocking his car slightly askew on exit, thus allowing T. Thomas a sliver of separation that he utilized to complete his arduous task of finally, finally breaking into victory lane in USAC National competition after numerous heartbreaks.
Coming off his victory a night earlier, Courtney was second ahead of Grant, Brady Bacon and Dave Darland.
Those five, incidentally, are also the top-five in cumulative "Smackdown VII" points, locking them into Saturday night's feature and King of the Hill Qualifying session along with K. Thomas, Chris Windom and Jason McDougal.

COURTNEY CHARGES TO SMACKDOWN NIGHT 1 VICTORY AT KOKOMO

Kokomo, Indiana......August 23, 2018 - Throughout the 2018 season, it almost seems as if Tyler Courtney owns a share of land down in the infield at the start/finish line. With eight USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victories to his credit, his footprint has already been imprinted on several different victory lanes this year.
However, the one victory lane he seems to have a stranglehold of lately is Kokomo Speedway on "Smackdown" weekend.
In Thursday night's "Smackdown VII" opener, the Indianapolis, Indiana driver became the first to win three consecutive "Smackdown" features, winning the final two nights of last year's edition before capturing his latest, leading the final 11 laps after sliding past last year's opening night victor C.J. Leary on the way to his 14th career series victory, tying him with the likes of Billy Cassella, Jim Hurtubise, Lee Kunzman and Bruce Walkup on the all-time list aboard the Clauson Marshall Newman Racing/Priority Aviation - Competition Suspension, Inc./Spike/Rider Chevy.
Leary slid up to the lead on the opening lap from his pole starting position, while Courtney slotted into the fourth spot. By lap four, though, Courtney was applying the pressure on the winningest "Smackdown" driver of all-time, Dave Darland, for second. After swapping the spot with Darland multiple times, Courtney reemerged with the second position, clearing Darland off turn four.
However, Courtney immediately found himself having to overcome a substantial deficit as Leary set the tone up front. By the time Leary reached lapped traffic, Courtney remained a half-straightaway back, ripping the top along with Leary as lapped traffic tethered themselves to the bottom of the racetrack.
Little by little, Courtney found his rhythm and began to close the gap on Leary just a few ticks at a time when seventh-running Kevin Thomas, Jr. slowed to a stop in turn three with a flat right rear tire. At the time, Leary and Courtney were separated by less than a second, but those two held an advantage in excess of 7.5 seconds over third when the yellow flew.
When you're mired in lapped traffic, a yellow flag can go one of two ways: it can either clear out the traffic that's holding you up or it can clear up the traffic that your opponent could've gotten caught behind. Either way, Courtney feels like it this was his race to win.
"I didn't really need a caution," Courtney admits. "You get in a rhythm there and you don't know if you're going to be able to get back in that rhythm. You just kind of hit and miss, especially when it's tricky like it was on the top. I felt like we were better, and we could've gotten him without a caution, but the caution definitely didn't hurt, and I was able to get back into my rhythm."
On the lap 20 restart, some may have expected Courtney to deliver his slider on the entry into turn one, but instead, he waited patiently and saved his for the next go-around after he built his momentum through three and four, ultimately pulling the trigger entering turn one on the 21st circuit, sliding up the top past Leary for the race lead.
"I couldn't really get a good restart off four," Courtney explained. "I just couldn't get enough grip off the bottom and he could always pull me a little bit. I knew if I could maintain it through one and two, I was really good through three and four, so I maintained through one and two and I got a run through three and four and felt like I was going to have a good enough run to clear him by what I felt was a fair enough amount, and we did. I expected a slider; he threw one and I stayed in it and drove around him. From there, I just got to run my own race there for the last ten laps."

Nonetheless, Leary remained in hot pursuit of Courtney as he tried to get himself back in the game, but while exiting turn four, Leary's right rear tire kissed the concrete wall. As he ramped up the wall and the fence, it appeared certain he was going on his lid, but that was not the case as he miraculously landed back on all fours and kept on going, albeit two spots further behind the leader with the lap counter melting away.
Down the stretch, Courtney underwent a couple of challenges that he successfully overcame following his ricochet off the turn two wall on lap 23. From that point, he withstood a restart that saw Justin Grant and Brady Bacon enter the fray, thought they were not able to hang as Courtney who drove away for a 3.656 second margin of victory over Leary, who made a miraculous comeback to move from fourth to second in the final four laps past Grant and Bacon. Bacon was third ahead of Grant and USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car point leader Chris Windom.

WINDOM WAXES FIELD IN #GYATK NIGHT AT KOKOMO

Kokomo, Indiana......August 22, 2018 - Fresh off his win at the Springfield Mile, Chris Windom turned up the wick Wednesday, leading all 27 laps to win #GYATK Night at Kokomo Speedway, the kickoff to "Sprint Car Smackdown VII."
It was the Canton, Illinois native's third career win during "Smackdown" week, following victories in 2012 and 2015. He came into the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car "Special Event" leading both the USAC and Kokomo point standings. Though USAC points were not up for grabs on this night, Windom made it a point to grab a victory as he hits his stride coming into the late-summer stretch.
Windom snagged the lead right from the start from the pole position aboard his Baldwin Brothers Racing/Fox Paving - AMSOIL/DRC/Claxton Mopar. Brady Bacon swiftly followed suit, splitting between Tyler Courtney and Justin Grant in turn three to move from fourth to second before being shuffled back to sixth.
Nearing halfway, Windom was glued to the bottom of the racing surface as he led a two-car breakaway in front of Courtney as third-place Grant and fourth-running Dave Darland challenged each other on the topside a half-straightaway back.
By the 13th lap, Windom had reached lapped traffic. However, with the lappers occupying the low line, Windom took the bull by the horns and took his orange No. 5 to the top to drive around the gridlock.
Courtney remained on the bottom and was able to pull within a wheel of Windom at the line at the conclusion of lap 14. Courtney seemed poised to rip the spot away, but snagged a hole on the bottom of turn two that disrupted his momentum and allowed Windom to break away.
Anywhere Windom saw a gap between lapped machinery, he was eager to get back to the bottom ASAP. Yet, Windom appeared comfortable running the fence as he's done so many times before at the Kokomo bullring. During the final laps, the 2017 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champ was forced to the top again as he swung around the trio of Scotty Weir, Stevie Sussex and Carson Short with relative ease.
The intense pace saw Windom lap half the field in a caution-free feature, leading all 27 circuits on his way to victory over Courtney, Grant, Darland and Bacon.
"That was a lot of fun," Windom exclaimed. "This track was so good, you could run top and bottom. I wasn't sure the top would work when I got to lapped traffic, but I was able to get it working. I saw Tyler's nose down there a few times, so I knew I had to stay up on the wheel. It's awesome to be able to win this race in honor of Bryan Clauson. I've had so many good battles with him here and I ran second to him a lot."

Speedway, Indiana......... With 86 cars entered for the September 5-6 Driven2SaveLives "BC39" presented by NOS Energy Drink at The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the prestige of winning is at a maximum and the stakes are mountainous.
As it stands now, with only a quarter of the field slotted to make Thursday night's A-Main, that essentially means the heat races, qualifiers and any race leading up to the feature will look like stacked feature events anywhere else for the USAC P1 Insurance National Midgets.
Therefore, with so much on-track action and a field laden with racing stud-status, a special format will be utilized to whittle the field down to 22 starters for the main event. You'll more than get your money's worth Wednesday.
General admission ticketholders will have first-come, first-served access to the Shaw Grandstand, the temporary grandstands built in the IMS infield, near the Dirt Track. Kids 15 & under are admitted free with paid adult ticketholders. Wednesday General Admission ticketholders can access the IMS infield and can purchase Pit Passes. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2018
The format for Wednesday's program on Sept. 5 will feature all cars hitting the track, not for qualifying as is usually done for the majority of USAC National events. Instead, all cars will draw for randomly draw for heat race positions and hot lap with their heat race. Two rounds of hot laps will be held, starting with the final heat and snaking back to conclude with the final heat.
The race for victory will certainly be one that everybody certainly has an eye on. But, the battle for passing points will be as essential, with each car gaining valuable points with each car he or she passes determining where you will start in the qualifying races come Thursday night.
One faulty move, mistake, or just being caught up in someone else's mess can derail an the entire two-days of racing for them. Drivers will have to be on their toes and on the gas to accomplish their mission. And that's only get into Thursday's 39-lap main event, which will boast more than $70,000 in purse and incentives, including a $15,000 winner's purse - the largest in Midget racing.
Heat races will be 10 laps each, with the starting lineups determined by random draw. Points for the heats will be accumulated by finishing position and total number of positions gained or lost. Cars will be positioned into qualifying races Thursday based on the points accumulated in Wednesday's heats.
The much-talked about pursuit race on Wednesday will include 24 Starters (the top-10 in qualifying points, the 10 heat race winners and 4 promoter option spots. Every four laps, USAC will throw a competition flag and cars that have been passed during that stage will be called to exit the track.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2018
All cars are eligible for Thursday's qualifying races, with up to 12 cars competing per race. Qualifying races will be 10 laps each, with top-six starting positions inverted with the top point earner from Wednesday's heat races starting sixth. Total points from the heat races and qualifying races will be added to set the feature starting lineup, along with transfers from the B-Main, C-Main and front of the D-Main races. The top 16 overall in accumulated points will start straight-up in the first eight rows of the feature.
G-Main: 10 laps. Includes cars 87th or higher in points, with the top four finishers transferring to the F-Main.
F-Main: 10 laps. Includes cars 73rd through 86th in points, plus the top four finishers from the G-Main. The top four finishers transfer to the E-Main.
E-Main: 10 laps. Includes cars 59-72 in points, plus the top four finishers from the F-Main. The top four finishers transfer to the D-Main.
D-Main: 12 laps. Includes cars 45-58 in points, plus the top four finishers from the E-Main. The top four finishers transfer to the C-Main.
C-Main: 15 laps. Includes cars 31-44 in points, plus the top four finishers from the D-Main. The top four finishers transfer to the B-Main.
B-Main (Semi-Feature): 20 laps. Includes cars ranked 17-30 in points, plus the top-four finishers from the C-Main. The top six finishers transfer to the night's A-Main feature event.
The 39-lap A-Main feature will have 22 starters, plus two USAC provisional starters (if applicable) and two IMS options.

BOAT PAINTS IT BLACK IN BAPS PA MIDGET WEEK CLOSER

York Haven, Pennsylvania.....August 5, 2018 - Chad Boat's switch from white to black was akin to the flick of a light switch in Sunday night's USAC P1 Insurance National and Eastern "Pennsylvania Midget Week" finale at BAPS Motor Speedway.
There was no trepidation whatsoever, however. The Phoenix, Arizona driver and his team rolled the black car out of the hauler at the 3/8-mile dirt oval with a myriad of confidence after a palate of struggles plagued them in the white ride during recent trips to Mid-America and the launch of the Pennsylvania swing.
Boat led all 30 laps and was undeniably dominant from start to finish despite a lengthy open-red situation that may have seemed like a three-hour tour to him as he sat in his seat, anticipating the final six-lap stretch.
However, Boat, as he had done time and time again on each restart throughout the 30-lapper, motored away from the competition to win his eighth career series feature.
"Honestly, we've been struggling these last five races," Boat admitted. "We knew we had this car sitting here and we knew it was fast. We ran it the last race of 'Indiana Midget Week' at Kokomo in early June, so, we said 'why not?' Obviously, when you're struggling, you have to change something. We brought it out and it worked. We have a lot of confidence in our cars, so there wasn't any worry."
Boat immediately grabbed the lead on the start from his outside front row starting position, surging past point leader and pole sitter Logan Seavey on the initial lap to gain a lengthy advantage that would be the theme throughout the whole deal.
The first stoppage for a calamity occurred on the eighth lap when series Rookie and fifth-running Kyle Craker flipped between turns three and four, catching up Tyler Courtney and Spencer Bayston in the carnage as well. Miraculously, all three were able to restart.
Throughout the mid-portion, Boat partook in no less than eight starts and restarts following yellows and reds, but each time, it would play out in a similar manner with Boat running roughshod on the field and splitting away.
"I knew the start would be crucial with Logan (Seavey)," Boat recalled. "On a big track like this, clean air is huge. Not from the standpoint of changing the car setup, but just being able to run your own race and not being in traffic, being able to run anywhere you want and do whatever you want to do with the car. I knew that was going to be huge, and once I got out front, I just tried to run my race. Obviously, with the restarts, I couldn't see behind me to see how close or how far they were. I never really saw anyone, so I kind of knew I was okay. But all the restarts had me worried."

The only one able to hang in Boat's neighborhood for more than a moment was Saturday night's Lanco winner Zeb Wise. On the lap 23 restart, he set up shop about four lengths from the tail of Boat, but Boat slammed that opening for opportunity and was gonzo once again.
Two laps later, the final stoppage came in the most serious accident of the night when ninth-place Kenny Miller flipped over the turn three guardrail, coming to a rest upside down nestled between the back side of the wall and the sponsor billboards. Though Miller was awake and alert when emergency personnel arrived at the scene, he was transported via ambulance for further observation.
The ensuing cleanup and the transportation of Miller led to a lengthy, 40-minute red flag period in which crews were permitted to tend to their machines to tinker and make adjustments that could alter the outcome of the race.
Boat knew what he had to do. He had to run six laps as hard as he could - six qualifying laps as he put it - to close out the contest. However, with all the talent behind the wrenches entering the fray to make their impact, it became an open invitation to get beat, as Boat points out. But, that didn't kill the vibe in the driver who's won seven of his eight career races in the month of August, three of which have come in the "Keystone State."
"I was pretty confident in what we had," Boat said. "But we made a couple changes just because Zeb was coming and, obviously, the track had changed since the beginning of the race, so we could tighten it up a little bit. The big thing was just keeping me comfortable where I could run that high line and make speed up there."
It didn't make a difference before or after the changes during the red, Boat was headed out of Pennsylvania with a fatter wallet and another trophy in his case as he once again throttled away from Wise on the restart, closing out a pretty flawless performance with a 1.812 second victory over Wise, Brady Bacon, Eastern point leader Alex Bright and Tanner Carrick.

WISE RETURNS FROM THE DL TO BECOME USAC'S YOUNGEST WINNER IN LANCO PA MIDGET WEEK OPENER

Newmanstown, Pennsylvania.....August 4, 2018 - For the past two months, Zeb Wise waited patiently on the sidelines with a broken collarbone, watching as the summer racing months passed him by without a steering wheel in his grasp.
The long-awaited return for the USAC P1 Insurance National Midget Rookie came Saturday night during the "Pennsylvania Midget Week" opener at Lanco's Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway.
To some, after a long layoff from any circumstance in life, the prevailing thought would be to ease your way back in, dip the those into the water per se, working back in at a tepid pace to get reacclimated to the setting.
No such reacclimating period existed for the young Angola, Indiana native as he slipped on his Clauson-Marshall Racing/Vision Collision - Priority Aviation/Spike/Stanton SR-11 like a comfortable pair of shoes right from the get-go, working his way past reigning series champ Spencer Bayston with 11 laps remaining to win his first career USAC feature.
"I really wasn't expecting to win tonight, to be completely honest," a humble Wise said. "I figured it would take a little time to get back used to. I've always felt comfortable at this track; I've ran a micro here. After qualifying, I thought we might have a shot and we were pretty solid in the heat race. Then, once I got into the lead in the feature, I got into a zone and didn't look back."
At the start, though, it was Kevin Thomas, Jr. racing into the lead from the outside of the front row, sliding in front of series point leader Logan Seavey to take the top spot on the opening lap. Thomas would break away for a half-straightaway lead by the third lap before the first of a brigade of stoppages put the action to a halt when Brayton Lynch and Kenney Johnson collided in turn three on the fourth lap.
Following the restart, Tyler Courtney and Brady Bacon walloped each other in turn four while battling for the fifth position, sending Courtney into a barrel roll. Not only would Courtney return the race, he would race his way back into the top-ten by the end of the 40-lap main event.
Bacon's misfortune came as part of a tumultuous event on lap 17 as Thomas worked lapped traffic, clipping Andrew Layser on the bottom of turn three and sending KTJ sideways toward the top of the track. Bacon had no room to escape the quagmire and flipped to produce another red before rejoining the fray.
That put Bayston in the lead where he would crack open a full-straightaway lead on the ensuing restart while Seavey, Wise and Grant tussled for the second, third and fourth positions as they worked to wade through the lapped traffic that formed a three-car buffer between Bayston and his nearest competition on the restart.
Wise pulled off the slider on Seavey in turn two on the 21st lap while Grant squeaked by the outside of Seavey for third exiting turn four a half-lap later. Grant's charge to the front would be stifled when the lapped car of Kevin Woody, Jr. slipped sideways in turn three. Grant tagged him, sending him into a series of flips that also collected top-five-running Timmy Buckwalter.
After a minor tangle between Chad Boat, Brenden Bright and Jason Rice between turns one and two on lap 28, finally, for Wise, the seas began to part with no lapped traffic separating he and Bayston on the restart.
"I followed Spencer for a little bit," Wise recalled. "I knew if we got into lapped traffic, I wasn't going to get by him. It was just so tight through traffic. Even if there are cars running the bottom, there's really no way to throw a slider. A slider would already be tight, let alone when there's a car on the bottom."
Wise put the full assault on Bayston, sliding him in turn three on lap 29 for the lead, momentarily. Bayston would return the favor in turn three on the following lap, however, Wise countered to the inside and recaptured the flag to secure the spot at the top of the leaderboard.

Yet, at a place like this, there's no time to rest on your laurels, set the dials on cruise control and let it ride. Lanco is basically a dirt track jungle with rabid, ravenous racecar drivers salivating at the opportunity to eat you alive if given the opportunity.
Everybody and everything is in play at all times on this 1/8-mile speed bowl. Case in point: Courtney, Bacon and Grant are among the three drivers who flipped during the feature who recovered to finish in the top-ten, perhaps the only occasion of that occurring in USAC history. Courtney finished 10th. Bacon, who flipped on lap 16, finished 5th and Grant, who flipped on the 25th lap, came home with a 7th place finish.
"Anywhere we go with the USAC Midgets, there's no time to rest, especially with a veteran like Spencer," Wise said. "He's a great racecar driver. I knew he'd be there the whole time and, as soon as I passed him, he wanted it back. I think that goes for any racecar driver."
Bayston began reeling Wise in as the laps wore down to two to go, searching high low and middle as the leaders encroached constant traffic. Bayston peeked to the outside on the back straight while Wise refused to relinquish a single grain of sand, trying to split that grain between the two lappers, tapping Kenny Miller around who, in turn, collected Bayston.
Meanwhile, in one of the most amazing, unspeakable moments that you'll ever see, outside of a Travis Pastrana, Evel Knievel, Joie Chitwood or Tommy Bartlett show, occurred when Seavey put "four on the fence" and literally drove on the chain link, completely horizontal, between turns three and four to avoid the carnage unscathed.
On the final restart, Wise had clamped down the lead with vise grips as he drove to a one-second win over hard-charging USAC Eastern Midget point leader Alex Bright and USAC National Midget point leader Logan Seavey, followed by a career-best result for Adam Pierson while Brady Bacon rounded out the top-five.
The victory for Wise was also monumental in the realm of auto racing history as no driver that young has ever won a National Series feature under the USAC banner. At 15 years, 8 months and 21 days old, Wise surpasses the former record held by the late Bryan Clauson, who won his first in a USAC Midget at the age of 16 years, 3 months and 23 days on October 8, 2005 at Ohio's Columbus Motor Speedway.
Wise accomplished the feat in none other than the No. 39BC, the same number that was synonymous with Bryan, sports his initials and is owned by Bryan's father, Tim.
"I'm kind of speechless," Wise acknowledged. "I didn't even know Bryan had that record before me. To do it in the 39BC is very cool. He's the one who picked me, so I'm glad to get a win for him. I know he's watching up there and I'm sure he's happy. Thank you, Bryan, for everything you did for me."

DARLAND DOES IT AGAIN AT HAUBSTADT; WINDOM WEARS ISW CROWN

Haubstadt, Indiana......July 28, 2018 - For Dave Darland, there aren't many things that one could say would surprise him. After all, the man's seen it all and done it all in USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car racing throughout his storied career.
However, Saturday night in the NOS Energy Drink "Indiana Sprint Week" finale, "The People's Champ" did something that surprised even himself - winning at Tri-State Speedway - a track that has proven to be a bugaboo in his craw over the past three decades.
Meanwhile, the driver Darland passed to score Saturday's 20th career ISW victory was none other than Chris Windom, who came into the feature cradling a 15-point lead over reigning champ Kevin Thomas, Jr., meaning a fifth-place finish or better would secure the ISW title regardless of what KTJ did, no questions asked, no fuss, no muss.
Windom held the exclamation point for the bulk of the 30-lap main event from his outside front row starting spot. For a driver who astonishingly hasn't won an ISW race or title since 2011, what better way to plant the flag of punctuational nomenclature than by winning the feature and being fitted for the crown on the same night.
Chase Stockon dogged Windom like a Baskerville Hound as the two pounced toward lapped traffic by lap 10, Stockon did his dirty work through the middle while Windom scraped the lower groove in his Baldwin Brothers Racing/Fox Paving - AMSOIL/DRC/Claxton Mopar. Stockon was taking a peek around the outside of Windom when the first yellow flag fell for the stopped car of Daron Clayton in turn four.
A restart near midway saw Windom and Stockon separated by the lapped car of Mario Clouser, one who had the speed to run the quickest lap of the race at the time and was able to race wheel-to-wheel with Windom until clearing the scene and gaining his lap back.
A handful of laps later, Kokomo ISW winner Thomas Meseraull flipped nose-to-tail off turn four into the catch fencing while running ninth. He was okay, but not his car nor was Ballou's ride, which experienced severe trauma on the front end.
On the ensuing lap 19 restart, Darland surged from third to second past Stockon with a turn one slider. The race was on and here came pride up the backstretch in the form of the Goodnight Racing-Curb-Agajanian/Curb Records - The Pallet Builder/Maxim/Claxton Chevy.
Darland sheared into Windom's lead each trip around the quarter-mile dirt oval and, on lap 24, sharpened his blades and made the attack on Windom with a slider in turn one to snag the lead.
"I hadn't thought much about Chris running for the championship, but I knew he was" Darland admitted. "I didn't want to screw him, obviously. I gave him a clean slider. There's good sliders and there's bad. If you give the guy the option of either lifting or cutting down or fill the gap, that's the only thing you can do."
"I honestly wasn't expecting that big of a slider," Windom recalled. "The track started moving around a bit. I started running the bottom in the first half and I felt like it was slowing down quite a bit. It's tough leading here because you don't really know where to go. I tried to get to the top, but Dave got by us and his car was really hooked up tonight. It was going to be tough to run him down and I don't think I really had anything for him unless I really wanted to start pressuring him. I was looking at the big picture there and thought I was in a really good spot in second behind him. I just rode it out after I didn't think I had anything for him.
One lap later, on lap 25, Clouser's car was found spun backwards close to the outside wall between turns one and two, just in front of the leaders. Windom had to take evasive action, but escaped without any harm.
If being passed for the lead in the closing laps wasn't enough of a Pepto moment for Windom, surely the final five laps following the restart would need a little relief. However, Windom had his CPU set on Expert Mode and remained in check, unfazed as he locked up the second spot with KTJ in fourth, enough of a point cushion to add Indiana Sprint Week titlist to his ever-growing resume.
All the while, up front, Darland was putting the hurtin' on the field, locking up his second victory in a three-day span for his record-extending 62nd career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature win. Windom finished second ahead of Stockon, K. Thomas and C.J. Leary.
"I just won at Haubstadt," Darland exclaimed. "It's unbelievable! I never thought I'd say that. It's a great feeling to win here, let alone anywhere. Haubstadt is an exceptionally good feeling for me because we usually suck here. I had a great racecar and had to take advantage of it. You don't get a chance to win here very often. I just wanted to win, man, like Jason Johnson's famous line from Knoxville a couple years ago."
Windom followed up June's "Eastern Storm" title with a NOS Energy Drink "Indiana Sprint Week" championship in a little in over a span of a month to become just the third driver to accomplish both tasks in a single season (Bryan Clauson in 2013 and Robert Ballou in 2015). Windom was rewarded with a $5000 first-place prize check for winning ISW, plus his second custom, hand-made Bridgeport Rocker courtesy of John and Terri Youngs of Vincennes, Indiana.
"It's so special to do this again with (team owners) Kenny and Margo Baldwin" Windom beamed. "We really wanted to come out and win this race tonight, but looking at the big picture, we wanted another Sprint Week title. It took a huge effort from everybody this week to have the finishes we did. (Crew Chief) Derek Claxton had this thing great all week. It never had any failures. That's what it takes to come out here and win these titles. Everybody else on the team, and all our sponsors, we couldn't do it without all them. We're just really consistent right now. That's what it takes."
