BAYSTON BUSTS THROUGH FOR FIRST USAC MIDGET WIN AT GAS CITY

Gas City, Indiana June 1, 2016 .... Flawless is the only word to describe Spencer Bayston's performance Wednesday night in the second round of the 12th annual "Indiana Midget Week" at Gas City I-69 Speedway. The Lebanon, Indiana driver quickly shot to the lead from the pole position at the drop of the green flag and ran 30 straight laps without turning a wheel wrong to earn his first career USAC National Midget victory.
Bayston, the 2015 USAC National Midget "Rookie of the Year," began the race alongside fellow front row starter Zach Daum. It was Bayston who got the better of the two as the field headed for the bottom of the racetrack in the opening laps.
By the eight circuit, Bayston moved up a lane to run the middle as Daum, Kyle Larson and Bryan Clauson gave chase. However, on lap nine, Chase Johnson barrel-rolled his machine in turn four to bring about the first stoppage of the feature.
On the ensuing restart, Daum got to the inside of Bayston for the lead, but Bayston was able to withstand the challenge, nipping Daum at the stripe at the end of lap nine.
Larson and Clauson soon swarmed Daum for the second spot, crossing the line three-wide on both lap 11 and lap 12 as Larson emerged with second in front of Clauson while Daum dropped to third.
Just before halfway, Clauson fought back to reclaim the runner-up spot from Larson as Bayston continued to lead the way with a one-and-a-half second advantage over his nearest challenger. Bayston never missed a beat as he conquered the backmarkers with ease. But with just seven laps to go, the stopped car of Tanner Thorson brought out the yellow, erasing the lengthy gap that Bayston had established.
Bayston had a combined 68 career USAC National Midget wins bearing down on him in the four spots in the immediate vicinity of his tail tank on the lap 24 restart.
When the opportunity arose, Bayston was mentally and physically prepared to meet the task at hand. Clauson, Larson, Daum and Christopher Bell could not phase Bayston on the restart as the 17-year-old kept his poise and focus on what was in front, not behind him, standing on the throttle as he exploded on the restart to lay all doubts to rest.
From that point forward, the attention turned to the battle for second between Clauson and Larson. Larson stayed on Clauson's heels, but with five to go, Larson clipped a turn four infield tire, slowing his progress as Clauson sped away into the distance, allowing him to seize an additional position that provided important points toward the 2016 "Indiana Midget Week" championship.
In the end, Bayston had the field covered, defeating Clauson by .097 seconds with Larson, Daum and Bell rounding out the top-five at the checkered flag.
For the second consecutive year, the USAC National Midget schedule opened up its season with two first-time series winners in the first three races. Kevin Thomas, Jr. and Tanner Thorson won races two and three in 2015 while Shane Golobic won the 2016 season opener at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin and now Spencer Bayston put his name in the winners' column in the third race of this season in his Keith Kunz - Curb-Agajanian Motorsports/TRD - Mobil 1/Bullet/Speedway Toyota.
"I'm speechless right now," Bayston exclaimed. "Big Al (Scroggins) had the car absolutely perfect. I could hold it to the ground and it would dig the whole way around. I was waiting for Bryan (Clauson) and Kyle (Larson) to show up, but these guys gave me a good enough race car that I could stay out front. I was getting some signals under the red from my guys about where those two were running, so I just tried to focus on my line and tried to keep making good laps. To race against these guys is special and to beat them is even more special because both of them are guys that I've looked up to my whole career."
By virtue of two straight runner-up finishes at Montpelier and Gas City, Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Indiana takes over the "Indiana Midget Week" point lead as the series resumes Thursday at Putnamville, Indiana's Lincoln Park Speedway, a race he was victorious in one year ago.
"Our car was alright tonight; we were just a little off," Clauson admitted. "We could hang; we just didn't have enough to mount anything. I pulled out everything I had to hold Kyle off. Those three points could play a big factor at the end of the week, but it's a great start to 'Indiana Midget Week' for us."
Elk Grove, California's Kyle Larson couldn't quite replicate the magic of his Montpelier performance one night ago, but would have to settle for the third spot in his final appearance in 2016 "Indiana Midget Week."
"It's always fun racing Bryan (Clauson)," Larson said. "I needed the caution, but I needed to restart in front of Bryan and, after that, I didn't really have a shot at Spencer (Bayston). He wasn't on the bottom in (turns) three and four and I could get through there pretty well. Bryan was running on the bottom in (turns) three and four too and it was enough to slow me down a little, but I had a lot of fun. It was a pretty solid weekend of racing for me, so a big thanks to Keith (Kunz) and Pete (Willoughby)."

Montpelier, Indiana May 31, 2016 ..... These days, Kyle Larson doesn't get the chance to jump behind the wheel of a USAC Midget as often as he once did due to his NASCAR commitments to Chip Ganassi, but on Tuesday night in the 12th annual "Indiana Midget Week" opener at Montpelier Motor Speedway, Larson looked as if he never left the open wheel ranks, crafting a masterpiece of wheelmanship to take his first USAC National Midget win since 2013 in his first, as well as the series' first, visit to the quarter-mile dirt oval in Montpelier, Ind.
Larson, in one of eight Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports entries, started on a star-studded front row that included recent Indianapolis 500 starter Bryan Clauson on the outside. Larson quickly jetted out to the lead at the start, but on the second circuit, teammate Tanner Thorson threw his car to the track's edge, running down and disposing of Larson as the two reached the flagstand at the end of lap two.
On lap five, a Steve Buckwalter turn four tip-over, that also collected Dave Darland, brought out the red flag.
Thorson, who was looking to repeat his "Indiana Midget Week" opening night victory from a year ago, came under constant attack from Larson as the race neared the one-third mark. Larson threw a rapid fire succession of sliders on Thorson on the tenth lap in turns one and three, but was unable to keep the advantage after pushing the nose of his machine over the cushion. On lap 11, Larson attacked Thorson once again in the first turn with a slider, but Thorson battled back to remain up front.
Two laps later, Larson attempted yet another major slide job on Thorson for the top spot, pulling in front and almost bringing the two a halt as Thorson continued on and Clauson scooted past Larson for second.
Just before the halfway point, it was Clauson's turn to take on Thorson for the lead. Clauson's slider attempt briefly put him in front, but it was to no avail as Thorson fought his way to remain the man to beat.
After a Spencer Bayston spin on lap 18 brought out the yellow, Clauson immediately returned to the "slider-fest" on the ensuing restart, entering turn one with a full head of steam, emerging in front of Thorson at the top of turn one, but Thorson made contact with the rear bumper of Clauson's car, sending Larson slightly off the berm as Thorson sped off with the advantage as Larson moved back into second.
Thorson and Larson distanced themselves from Clauson with less than ten to go as Larson bounced off the concrete in turn four, but a Holly Shelton spin in turn four reset the lineup with just eight laps remaining.
After the restart, Larson followed Thorson on the high side for the next couple of laps, setting up his next move on Thorson. With five to go, Larson finally made the slide-job stick as the two entered one, with Larson pulling away and building a gap between him and second-running Thorson. But, once again, a yellow slowed the action, setting up a three-lap shootout between Larson, Thorson, Clauson and Bell, who charged from the tail after an opening lap incident.
Larson was able to get a huge jump on the restart as Thorson began to fade and Clauson and Bell moved past Thorson to run second and third. However, no one was in the vicinity of Kyle Larson, who pulled away at the end to take a 1.905-second victory over Clauson, Bell, Jerry Coons, Jr. and Brady Bacon.
Larson, of Elk Grove, California, picked up his 4th career "Indiana Midget Week" win and his 13th career USAC National Midget victory, tying him with Rico Abreu, Steve Knepper, Don Meacham, Ryan Newman and Stevie Reeves for 49th on the all-time list after taking the win in his Keith Kunz - Curb-Agajanian Motorsports/Parker Store - Target/Bullet/Speedway Toyota.
"That was a lot of fun." Larson exclaimed. "I didn't think the top in (turns) one and two would be that great, but Tanner was able to rip around me. I knew I was a lot better than him in (turns) three and four. I just couldn't quite figure out turn two. I was getting beat pretty bad over there. I don't know if it just got cleaned off or what, but my grip off of turn two got a little better and I could stay closer to Tanner and then, eventually, throw the slider. I had so much fun, though! Thirty laps fly by in these races. It's so enjoyable to run with Keith (Kunz) and Pete (Willoughby). They deserve all the attention that they've been getting the last few years."
Just two days after competing in his third career Indianapolis 500-mile race, Noblesville, Indiana's Bryan Clauson returned to the controls of his RKR-Dooling Racing/Cancer Treatment Centers of America - B & H Contractors/Spike/Stanton SR-11 to take second place after a furious race-long battle with Larson and Thorson.
"It became a race between me and Kyle to see who could clear Tanner first," Clauson explained. "I got a run and threw something at him and Tanner got into me when he came back across and I let Kyle get by us. We just started getting tight there at the end. It might not have made a difference because it got tough to run once the track got real curby, but second is a solid start to "Indiana Midget Week."
Norman, Oklahoma's Christopher Bell came back after getting caught up in a first-turn, first-lap scrum involving two other cars that put him near the tail of the field of the restart. Bell stormed back to the front to salvage a third in the Keith Kunz - Curb-Agajanian Motorsports/TRD - DC Solar/Bullet/Speedway Toyota.
"Staying out of trouble was huge," Bell said with a sigh of relief. "Everybody kept crashing each other and it got me on the first lap. But once I got back there, they kept running into each other and I didn't really feel like I passed a whole lot of cars. I was good at the end; it just got to be so fast around the top that you couldn't really slide anybody unless you had a big run like Kyle did. I worked around the bottom really well, so that helped, but we just needed them to bottle up on the top one more time."

TANNER TAKES "CARB NIGHT CLASSIC" AS SWANSONS RUN 1-2 AT LUCAS OIL RACEWAY
In recent years, Tanner Swanson hasn't gotten behind the wheel of a racecar as often as he once did. Despite his limited schedule of races that one could count on a single hand, the 25-year-old Kingsburg, California driver makes each and every one of those opportunities count, specifically at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Indiana where Friday night he earned his fifth victory in his last six visits to the .686-mile paved oval at the "Carb Night Classic...The Race Before the 500". In the process, he tied Mike Bliss to become the winningest driver in USAC Silver Crown competition at Lucas Oil Raceway.
To put his domination in perspective, Tanner's only defeat in the past four seasons at Lucas Oil Raceway in a Silver Crown car came after leading the opening 99 and three-quarters of a lap in a race in July 2014 before David Byrne snuck by him for the win on the final corner.
However, early on in the night, it was not a simple cakewalk for Tanner after only managing a fourth-place qualifying run in ProSource Qualifying. Up front, it was three-time Lucas Oil Raceway Silver Crown winner Bobby Santos on the pole with Tanner's brother Kody Swanson, a one-time Lucas Oil Silver Crown winner and the previous night's victor at the "Hoosier Hundred" at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, alongside.
At the drop of the green flag, the top-three consisted of highly-accomplished pavement shoe Santos in the lead with K. Swanson and T. Swanson running one, two, three. By lap three, Tanner had got around Kody for the second spot. The three followed nose-to-tail, trying to maintain a quick pace, but also conserving the tires with a full load of fuel behind them.
On lap 21, fourth-running Jerry Coons, Jr. went for a scary ride after his throttle stuck at the end of the back straightaway. With nowhere to go and no time to slow the car down, Coons pummeled the SAFER barrier, leaving a trail of rubber against the pearly white wall from the entrance of three to between turns three and four. Coons was uninjured.
Tanner would size up Santos, peeking his nose alongside Santos multiple times in a bid for the top spot through the middle portion of the 100-lap event. But luck didn't seem to be on Tanner's side as yellow flags flew on multiple occasions just as Tanner appeared ready to pounce on Santos for the lead.
By lap 70, the trio of Santos, T.Swanson and K.Swanson were all running just feet from each other in a high-stakes, high-speed game of poker as each stayed within striking distance but trying not to show their hand quite yet.
Santos was able to withstand each challenge to his perch, but on lap 81, his car quickly slowed with apparent engine trouble, giving way to Tanner Swanson for the remaining 20 circuits.
From that point forward, Tanner went relatively unchallenged, making his way with ease around a handful of backmarkers in the final few laps to take the checkered flag over Kody, Chris Windom, first-time series starter Robert Stout, Aaron Pierce. Justin Grant came home 6th in his pavement Silver Crown debut while David Byrne, Joe Axsom, Shane Cockrum and Joe Liguori rounded out the top-10.
Throughout the 56-year history of Lucas Oil Raceway, there have been distinct eras of domination in USAC competition. In the last 20 years, when one showed up to the Brownsburg, Indiana oval, for a time, it seemed no one could beat names such as the aforementioned Mike Bliss and Bobby Santos, but also Dave Steele and Tracy Hines. In the mid-2010s, the name that strikes fear into competitors signing in at the pit window at Lucas Oil belongs to Tanner Swanson, who led the remaining 20 laps of Friday night's race to take the victory in his Bowman Racing/Bowman Properties - Bowman-Elmore Racing/Beast/Kistler Chevy.
"We were great on the long runs, but on the restarts, I was super tight all the time," Tanner recalled. "We lost our radios as soon as I went green, but I figured Kody was close and I was trying to make moves that wouldn't put us both in a bad spot. I hate to win one when the leader falls out, but I'm glad that this team and all their hard work paid off."
In the 46-year existence of USAC's Silver Crown division, Friday night's race marked just the fourth time that the series has raced on back-to-back nights. Kody Swanson once again proved to be the most versatile, following up Thursday night's "Hoosier Hundred" victory on the dirt with a second place run on the pavement one night later in the DePalma Motorsports/Radio Hospital - Champion Oil/Hampshire/Hampshire Chevy to extend his championship point lead to 24 over Chris Windom heading into June 10th's race at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
"I always say I should win every night I get in this car and I mean it," Kody declared. "Tonight was one of those nights where I thought we'd maybe be able to double up. Tanner just does a phenomenal job and I hated to see Bobby (Santos) out because he was making Tanner press awfully hard. I was just hoping to capitalize late in the race because I thought we had that good of a car. With about 30 to go, the power steering started going out, so that made it tough, but the guys gave me a car that I could still handle despite that. But we'll take second. I think it's the first time in two years I've even been able to see that #02 car (of Tanner Swanson) here, so we're looking forward to coming back in July."
Canton, Illinois driver Chris Windom collected his third top-five finish in the three series races run thus far in 2016, finishing a season-best third on Friday night in his RPM-Fred Gormly/RPM Auto Enterprise/Beast/J & D Mopar.
"The car took off really well on the restarts; that's how I got by Pierce and Wilson early on," Windom said. "We just didn't have the four-tire grip that the #63 and the #02 had, but at the end, we came on a lot stronger. We just couldn't keep up with them for that long to be there at the end."

USAC SILVER CROWN CHAMPIONSHIP RACE RESULTS: May 26, 2016 - Indianapolis, Indiana - Indiana State Fairgrounds - 62nd "Hoosier Hundred"
Two-time and defending USAC Silver Crown champion Kody Swanson has been the beacon of excellence in the series over the past two-plus seasons, but on Saturday night, the Kingsburg, California native added yet another amazing feat on his ever-growing resume by etching his name in "Hoosier Hundred" lore, earning the victory in the 62nd edition of the prestigious event at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, joining Indianapolis 500 winners Jimmy Bryan (1954-56) and Al Unser (1970-73) as the only wheelmen to claim three straight "Hoosier Hundred" victories.
Swanson stayed in the hunt all race long, but just as he did one year ago, Swanson decided it was go-time near the two-thirds mark of the 100-lap event. In 2015, Swanson took the lead from A.J. Fike with 33 laps to go. This year, Swanson took care of business one lap earlier, sailing past Cottle with 34 to go before holding off multiple challenges from Cottle down the stretch to take his 13th career series victory, surpassing three-time Silver Crown champ Jimmy Sills and placing himself 7th on the all-time win list.
In the first quarter of the race, all eyes were on the battle at the front between Jerry Coons, Jr. and Brady Bacon. At the start, pole-sitter Bacon was overtaken by Coons for the lead, before shooting back to the top spot on lap two. On the 27th circuit, just two laps after a restart, Coons squeezed between Bacon and the outside wall, outdueling Bacon for the lead in a drag race into turn one.
Meanwhile, Cottle began his charge, entering the top-five with a pass on Justin Grant in the first turn. By lap 44, Cottle had assumed second with an inside maneuver on Bacon as Coons, Cottle and Swanson ran nose-to-tail.
On lap 58, Cottle's persistence paid off as he ran down Coons for the lead with Swanson and Grant in hot pursuit, while Coons slipped to 4th.
With 35 laps to go, longtime series veteran Russ Gamester went for a wild end-over-end ride in turn two, bringing out the night's first red flag. On the ensuing restart, Swanson turned up the wick, eventually clamping down on leader Cottle using his patented patient, calculating, methodical approach, overpowering Cottle for the top spot on lap 67.
Swanson's prowess on the dirt-miles wasn't able to force Cottle into submission during the final stretch. With 15 laps remaining, Cottle flexed his muscle by attempting to split between Swanson and the lapped car of Terry James, nearly colliding with each other as the pack trekked down the front straightaway.
Cottle refused to go away quietly, giving it one more shot with just nine laps to go, pulling to within a tail tanks' length of Swanson as the pair stormed into turn one. Catching and passing were proven to be two completely separate scenarios, as Cottle could only reel Swanson in briefly on occasion, but Swanson was simply too strong down the stretch, pulling away for the landmark win over Cottle, Coons, Indy 500 competitor Bryan Clauson and Chris Windom, who took over the seat of scheduled driver Brian Tyler in the McQuinn no. 14 after his primary ride, the RPM/Fred Gormly no. 98 suffered mechanical issues in practice.
Swanson has made the Indiana State Fairgrounds look like his own, personal playground in the last three years and this night was no different in his DePalma Motorsports/Radio Hospital - Champion Oil/Maxim/Hampshire Chevy.
"The mile is probably my favorite (race) and I don't really know why," Swanson said. "There's just something about it. Part of it is because it's the 'Hoosier Hundred,' which is so cool, but there's a lot of challenges that the Indy Mile presents. People say it's narrow and it's hard to get a hold of and you have to be precise. For some reason, the more other people don't like race tracks, the more I like them. Getting three in a row is hard to put into word how much it means. It puts me in a category with a group of guys that I don't feel like I belong with, but it wasn't just me. Our team won this race three times; not just me. I'm just so thankful to be a part of it."
Kokomo, Indiana's Shane Cottle took second in the Curtis Williams/Roger Williams Precision Engines - QS Components/Maxim/Chevy after leading nine laps and throwing a slew of challenges to Swanson in the final run, thereby earning his best series finish since his 2007 victory in the "Ted Horn 100" at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds.
"Kody was a lot better getting into the corner and through the center, but it just came down to him conserving his tires a lot longer than I did," Cottle admitted. "He had a little more left at the end and I had to save mine after the red and that allowed him to get by me. I think we were a little faster than he was; I just couldn't ever catch him. This car is really fast and it's been good ever since I got in it. So, hopefully, our time will come soon."
Two-time "Hoosier Hundred" winner Jerry Coons, Jr. led 32 laps on his way to a third place result in the Nolen Racing/KECO - Columbus Container/Maxim/Tranter Chevy.
"I saw Bryan on the outside a couple times, but I wasn't worried about him doing something silly," Coons said. "I just needed a little bit more everywhere. I just couldn't believe the pace those guys were setting early. I got to the lead and just tried to cruise and conserve because that's what you do here, but Kody went by me with 50 to go and I couldn't believe how quick they were running. But these cars change over the years and this is our first mile with the Maxim, so we're pleased to come away with a third."

TERRE HAUTE, IN.........Robert Ballou slid his way into the record books Wednesday night, surpassing A.J. Foyt and Roger McCluskey on the all-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car win list with his 24th career series win and becoming just the third driver in the 46-year history of the "Tony Hulman Classic" to win in back-to-back years after outdueling Thomas Meseraull in a torrid race-long battle to collect the coveted rifle at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.
As the green flag flew at the start of the 30-lap feature, pole-sitter Meseraull shot out to the front of the pack. But, it was second-quickest qualifier and inside row-three starter Ballou who quickly charged to the second spot by lap two, setting the stage for an epic battle between the two for the top spot.
After a pair of cautions slowed the pace with just four laps completed, Meseraull and Ballou rode the cushion, spraying Terre Haute's newly-painted red, white, and blue wall with rooster tails through each of the four turns. On lap nine, Ballou followed Meseraull with a full head of steam into turn three, jetting to the bottom at the entrance of three and throwing a massive slider that stuck, giving him the lead as the two exited turn four.
However, the move was all for naught due to the stoppage of Landon Simon's stalled machine at the top of turns three and four, bringing out the yellow flag.
The yellow did not deter Ballou one iota. As soon as the green dropped on the ensuing restart, Ballou went to the well once again, replicating the same move he made on Meseraull just before the caution fell, diving to the inside guardrail before sliding up to the wall between turns one and two. But Meseraull didn't blink, instead, staying on the throttle with just inches to spare between Ballou's right side Hoosiers and the concrete, taking back the lead as they exited turn two.
A rejuvenated Jon Stanbrough threw his hat in the ring of contenders after slipping past Ballou for 2nd at the flag stand on lap 10. However, Ballou would reload and reclaim the second spot from Stanbrough, the 2002 "Hulman Classic" victor, one lap later and now found Meseraull clearly within sight on his radar.
Ballou and Meseraull engaged in an exhibition of sliders on laps 17 and 18 that put the sizable Wabash Valley crowd on its feet. The two exchanged the lead on three separate occasions in that lap and a half span, as they traded slide jobs at the end of the straightaways at the entrance of turns one and three, culminating with Ballou and Meseraull banging wheels at the exit of four on lap 18 as Mesearull reemerged at the head of the field.
On lap 22, Ballou threw one last jab for good measure, executing a picture-perfect slider on Meseraull for the lead. From that point until the drop of the checkered flag, nobody was game for Ballou's presence down the stretch as the Rocklin, California driver ultimately delivered the final knockout blow, pulling away for a 4.422-second margin of victory over Meseraull, Stanbrough, Bacon, Chris Windom (from the 20th starting spot), Chase Stockon, Shane Cottle, Dave Darland, Jerry Coons, Jr. and Justin Grant.
Ballou was able to add another rifle to his growing collection of "Hulman Classic" hardware after picking up his first series victory in three months in his Ballou Motorsports/MPHG Promotions - Blakesley's Auto/Maxim/Ott. He joined Steve Butler (1987-88) and Levi Jones (2008-09) as a winner of consecutive winners of the classic event and also became just the fourth defending USAC National Sprint Car champ to win the race, adding his name to a list that includes Pancho Carter (1975), Steve Butler (1987-88) and Levi Jones (2009)
"We haven't finished as well as we'd have liked to recently," Ballou admitted. "But we've been really fast and we don't give up. We had to put a motor in this car at 1:30 this morning, and then I was late for qualifying, and it just made me furious for the rest of the night. This car keeps going up and down the road based on our winnings, so it's great that we got another one tonight. I slid Meseraull and knew I didn't have him cleared, and then the last time, we both slid the same corner and he was trying to protect himself; thankfully, we're both standing up here on the front stretch."
Meseraull, of San Jose, California, chopped two markers off of Bacon's lead in the series' standings with his second place finish in the Amati Racing/Marion Underground Construction - Zeller Construction/DRC/Dynotech, now standing just 17 points behind Bacon heading into the six-race "Eastern Storm" series that begins June 7 at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania.
"It was nice to start up front tonight," Meseraull said with relief. "(Crew chief) Donnie (Gentry) had the car awesome tonight. Him and I disagree on things sometimes, but he had it spot-on tonight and that just shows how good Robert (Ballou) was."
Avon, Indiana's Jon Stanbrough scored his first top-three USAC result in nearly a full-calendar year, a second-place at Pennsylvania's Susquehanna Speedway in June of 2015. Stanbrough returned to form in his Jon Stanbrough Racing/Woodland Auto Display - MPHG Promotions/Spike/J & D, running as high as second on the 10th lap and dropping to 4th before rallying just one lap from the finish to take third from point-leader Brady Bacon.
"Lapped traffic was a factor at the end for us, Stanbrough said." But I felt like I got better after Brady (Bacon) passed me. Then, I got back by him and, luckily, the lapped cars played into our favor at the end. To be able to pull out a 3rd is good, but we keep getting better and better every weekend. I thought we had something at (last weekend's race at) Gas City before we tipped over. All I've got to do is keep sitting up in the seat and we'll keep running up front."

USAC AMSOIL SPRINT CAR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RACE RESULTS: May 21, 2016 - Brownstown, Indiana - Brownstown Speedway
Brownstown, Indiana May 21, 2016... Just a mere month after combining forces, Kevin Thomas, Jr. and the 4J Motorsports team found USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship victory lane Saturday night at Brownstown Speedway, leading wire-to-wire in a caution-free affair at the series' first visit to the southern Indiana quarter-mile dirt oval since 2011.
Making just their third series start together, including a 3rd at Gas City (Ind.) I-69 Speedway one night prior, Thomas began the 30-lap feature from the pole position in the number 4J alongside Thomas Meseraull.
From the drop of the green flag, Thomas and his 4J Motorsports/Franklin Equipment - CEP Concrete/DRC/Chevy were a rocket ship on the cushion as the Cullman, Alabama driver rode the topside like a rail.
By lap 12, Thomas has already made his way to the backmarkers, surpassing them with ease as he built his advantage over nearest challenger, Meseraull, to a full-straightaway by the midway point.
However, Brady Bacon was the man on the move, swiping the second spot from Meseraull with an inside move in the first turn 10 laps from the finish. Trying to claw his way back into the hunt after starting eighth, Bacon's only hope down the stretch was for a caution, which would help close the interval between him and leader Thomas, thereby setting up a run for the checkered.
With just a few laps to go, a body panel on the car of leader Thomas became dislodged, hanging loose and flapping in the breeze as the final laps wound down. A potential debris caution loomed if the body panel ripped loose and fell onto the track's surface, which would negate Thomas's substantial margin and, in turn, benefit Bacon.
But it was not to be as the body panel held on while Kevin Thomas, Jr. laid the lumber to the 22-car field, leading flag-to-flag to earn his first series victory in 15 months, defeating Bacon, Dave Darland, Meseraull, C.J. Leary, 2010 Brownstown USAC winner Brady Short, KSE Racing Products/B & W Auto Mart "Hard Charger" Robert Ballou, Aaron Farney, Tyler Courtney and Kyle Cummins.
Saturday night marked the first time in five years that two different teams won their first ever series features in consecutive events. Todd Keen (whose car won with Scotty Weir at Gas City on Friday) and 4J Motorsports won back-to-back this weekend. Hank Byram (with driver Hunter Schuerenberg at Gas City) and the Baldwin Brothers (with driver Chris Windom at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway) accomplished the feat in 2011.
Thomas became the ninth different driver to win a feature through 11 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car events during the 2016 season, collecting his first series victory since February of 2015 at Eastbay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Florida.
"This is the most exciting win I think I've ever had, besides my first one," Thomas exclaimed. "These guys all have day jobs and they work their butts off and tune on this car three or four hours a night, week in and week out. I'm just pumped for my team. My car owner, Jeremy (Ottinger), told me a few weeks ago that he's never been part of a USAC win; I told him, 'that's going to change.' I didn't know it was going to happen this fast, but I'm just so excited I can't even express the feelings running through my body right now. It's just a great experience and I'm so glad I could do it with this team. I've found my comfort level with this car pretty quickly. I like running the top here (at Brownstown), but I've always had trouble being able to hold it and not slip over the edge. Brownstown gave us a great track tonight and gave us a cushion with something to lean on."
Brady Bacon, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma claimed a second place finish for the second consecutive night in his Dynamics, Inc./Mean Green - Lykins Oil/Triple X/Williams Mopar, which nudged his point lead to 19 over Meseraull in the new standings as the series heads into next Wednesday's 46th "Tony Hulman Classic" at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.
"We had the best car the last half of the race, but you can't afford to start eighth with no cautions, especially with this USAC field being as tough as it is," Bacon said. "You can't just charge up through there, especially with KT having as good of a car as he had. We were catching him slowly, but surely, but we ran out of laps and he never made a mistake. Our car was good and has been night-in and night-out and we're really gaining some momentum. We've been able to go pretty good on all different kinds of tracks, so all our hard work is paying off. We're starting to stretch our legs a little bit and, hopefully, we can keep riding this high now that we're getting into the bulk of the season."
Lincoln, Indiana's Dave Darland came home third in his Jeff Walker-Curb-Agajanian Racing/Jam-It-In Storage - Hoosier Tire/Maxim/Claxton for, by far, his best finish in USAC competition at Brownstown after recording finishes of 18th, a DNQ and a 23rd in his three previous visits.
"I had a lot of fun out there tonight," Darland said. "Brownstown did a great job with the racetrack tonight."

WEIR WARMS UP TO USAC NATIONAL VICTORY #1 IN GAS CITY'S "MAY MELTDOWN"
GAS CITY, IN..............In an epic side-by-side duel for the ages that lasted the entire second half of the feature, Scotty Weir was the ultimate gunslinger, outgunning Brady Bacon in the final pair of laps to claim his long-awaited first career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory Friday night at Gas City I-69 Speedway's "May Meltdown."
Weir started the 30-lap feature from the pole position, but it was outside front row starter Bacon who jumped out to the lead on the top side at the drop of the green flag.
As Bacon distanced himself from Weir, Chase Stockon began to make a charge toward the front, getting by Weir for the second spot with a first turn pass on lap 10.
At the midway point, Stockon was able to close within striking distance of leader Bacon as the two approached the tail end of the field. Yet, Stockon was unable to take advantage after making an uncharacteristic unforced error, doing a half-spin exiting turn one and stalling his ride to bring out the night's first yellow.
As the sprinkles continued to fall from the sky, the ensuing restart was short-lived with Jon Stanbrough, Gas City's winningest USAC Sprint Car driver with six wins, bouncing between turns three and four before getting upside-down to bring out the red flag on lap 16.
On the restart, it was nearly an exact replica of last year's "May Meltdown" clash between the Hoffman Racing no. 69 running first and the Todd Keen-owned no. 18x in second. One year ago, the same two cars battled it out in the final laps with Brady Bacon in the Hoffman car denying Thomas Meseraull in the Keen machine in what would've been his first career series win at the time. This time, it was down to Bacon and Weir, who's long come close to scoring his initial victory.
Weir went to the bottom of the racetrack while Bacon remained at the top. Bacon led lap 16, but the hard-charging Weir used the slow and steady line around the infield tires to pull even with Bacon one lap later, eventually able to nip Bacon at the line to take the lead on the 17th lap.
The side-by-side battle between the two continued lap-after-lap without either able to make any headway. Tyler Courtney followed Weir on the bottom to briefly make it a three-way battle with just 10 laps to go as Bacon retook the lead, edging Weir at the stripe on lap 21.
Bacon used every single inch of the high line on the quarter-mile surface he possibly could to stave off Weir, teetering off the edge of the backstretch on multiple occasions while maintaining and extending his lead as he encountered lapped traffic with three laps remaining.
Brady Bacon came upon the car of Dallas Hewitt, who was also running the high line just in front of Bacon. Bacon quickly moved to the middle, attempting to overtake Hewitt, which slowed him down just enough to allow Weir to rapidly close while utilizing the inside line he never wavered from, making the winning pass on Bacon with two laps to and pulling away to gain his first career series victory over Bacon, Kevin Thomas, Jr., Max McGhee, Courtney, Colten Cottle, Kyle Cummins, C.J. Leary, Chris Windom and Dave Darland.
Until tonight, Weir had been unable to crack the top-two in each of his 115 USAC National Sprint Car feature starts dating back to his first series appearance in 2003. In fact, three of his now six podium finishes have come on the Gas City dirt. It was a long time coming, but the Marion, Indiana driver was finally able to break through to become the AMSOIL National Sprint Car division's first first-time winner of the 2016 season after taking the win in his Todd Keen/AAA - Carts & Parts/DRC/Claxton.
"I think I might cry," Weir admitted. "I've been trying to do this for forever it seems like. I wasn't going to catch Brady (Bacon). We were about equal it seemed like, but we started catching him and I just told myself, 'Okay, just slow down.' I figured as long as I didn't hit the last infield tire, we'd be okay. I told (car owner) Todd (Keen) before the race that the top was going to slow down eventually and the bottom would be where we wanted to be and, thankfully, it worked out in our favor."
Brady Bacon, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, was attempting to repeat as the winner of the "May Meltdown," but came up just a bit short at the checkered after leading 24 of the 30 laps in his Dynamics, Inc./Mean Green - Lykins Oil/Triple X/Williams Mopar. He did, however, surpass Thomas Meseraull in the series point standings and will carry a 14-point lead into Saturday night's race at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway.
"We got to that lapped car that was running the cushion and that just killed me." Bacon said. "I think I moved up to the top right about the time I needed to because we were fading pretty fast on the bottom and got the top cleaned off just enough to really get going. But, the lapped car just really hurt us. Scotty was there to capitalize, though, so congrats to those guys to get a big win like this. On our end, the last four or five nights, we've been really, really good and that's all you can ask for. Sometimes you sneak one in and sometimes one sneaks past you, so we'll just regroup and try to get one tomorrow."
Cullman, Alabama's Kevin Thomas, Jr. certainly was one who snuck through the field during the feature, emerging with a third-place finish after starting 14th, earning himself and his team the KSE Racing Products "Hard Charger" Award in his 4J Motorsports/Franklin Equipment - CEP Concrete/DRC/Chevy.
"The cautions and reds really helped us," Thomas agreed. "I got to tune on the shocks a little bit and the top just got to be too far around. I'm not really known for just creeping around the tires, but these guys gave me a great car that allowed me to be patient and just click laps off at the end. It wasn't spectacular by any means, but we got a podium finish from 14th, so it was a good run for all of us. We've kind of gotten on a roll here, so hopefully, we can keep it going."
