Tribute to the #28

Posted by: | Comments (0)

How sad it is that the #28 car will not be racing this weekend at Martinsville and, in fact, has suspended operations indefinitely until a sponsor can be found for the car. The team had been a staple of the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit for decades but eventually lost prominence in the mid- and late-90s and never really regained competitiveness in the 2000's. After the recent Ford engines merger between Jack Roush and Robert Yates, the team was pretty much relegated to back-marker status and hasn't recovered since.

But, we still have our memories. Cale Yarborough of course made the #28 famous with back-to-back Daytona 500 wins in 1983 and 1984 driving for Harry Ranier. Later, Davey Allison picked up the ride in 1987 with Texaco-Havoline sponsorship and a year after that Robert Yates bought the team.

Here's a look back at Davey's first win during his rookie season in the 1987 Winston 500 at Talladega (AL) Superspeedway. During a late-race caution that injured driver Ken Ragan -- father of Roush-Fenway driver David Ragan -- NASCAR officials decided to cut the race ten laps short due to darkness. The race had been delayed over two and a half hours after Davey's father Bobby tore a hole in the catch fence on lap 22.

So here are the final 10 laps... Davey's first win and the last race with unrestricted engines. Bob Jenkins and Larry Nuber call the race for ESPN.

Al Unser Jr. and Chip Ganassi are injured in an accident in the 1984 Michigan 500 at Michigan Int'l Speedway. The accident occurred just past halfway in the race when Ganassi lost control of his car exiting turn two, collecting Unser Jr. and taking both drivers into the inside guardrail.

Paul Page and Bobby Unser with the call.

Here are the last ten laps of the March 11, 2001 Cracker Barrel 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The final laps featured a five-car battle for the win between Jerry Nadeau (25), Dale Jarrett (88), Kevin Harvick (29), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (8) and Jeff Gordon (24) and resulted in one of NASCAR's most memorable photo finishes.

Just a month after Dale Earnhardt's death, Harvick had stepped into the Goodwrench Chevrolet -- repainted to white with the number changed to 29 -- as the team's new driver. Here he is making only his third Winston Cup start.

Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip, and Larry McReynolds with the call for FOX.

Save of the Race: Jamie McMurray

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Jamie McMurray wins the "Save of the Race" Award for managing to keep his sliding car from hitting the wall or spinning out in Sunday's Shelby 427 at Las Vegas. Joey Logano washed up the track and made contact with McMurray's left rear, pitting him sideways. McMurray slid sideways all through turn two at 150 mph without losing control.

How'd he do that?

Racing Replay: 1984 Busch Clash

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Here's a look back at Ricky Rudd's violent crash in the Busch Clash of '84 all-star event at Daytona Int'l Speedway. He was running fifth and coming off of turn 4 when he was tapped by Jody Ridley, sending his Ford Thunderbird flying towards that dangerous inside wall (which has since been removed).

Rudd picked up some injuries in this crash but went on to compete in the Daytona 500 the following week and finished a remarkable 7th place. He had to tape his eyelids open since the swelling was blocking his vision. He then went on to win the race at Richmond the week after that.

Ken Squier and Ned Jarrett with the call for CBS.
