THE ELIMINATOR: Daryn Pittman wins Elimination Showdown at Cedar Lake
Kerry Madsen and David Gravel each set Quick Time for Independence Day Spectacular weekend

NEW RICHMOND, WI – July 2, 2020 – Daryn Pittman outlasted three rounds of elimination in a special Feature Thursday night at Cedar Lake Speedway to earn his first win at the Wisconsin track during the Independence Day Spectacular weekend.

For the first time, the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series ran a special $3,000-to-win 23-lap Elimination Showdown at the 3/8-mile track, after running two qualifying sessions for Friday and Saturday’s programs.

In a field of 20 cars, four were eliminated every five laps until there were eight left. The final eight cars ran an eight-lap dash to determine the winner. Pittman dominated the event, leading every lap from the pole and held off a late attack by 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz.

“It’s just something totally different from what we’re used to putting on,” said Pittman, of Owasso, OK. “Obviously, just glad to be out here racing this weekend with full capacity crowd. Thanks to the fans for coming out tonight and watching us time trial and hopefully they enjoyed that. From my seat, it was fun.”

The day started with participants and the large crowd of fans entering through state-of-the-art COVID-19 screenings, which will be in place all weekend. Then two qualifying sessions for Friday and Saturday’s race programs were held. Kerry Madsen set Quick Time for Friday’s race with an 11.243 sec. lap and David Gravel set Quick Time for Saturday’s event with an 11.690 sec. lap – his fourth Quick Time award of 2020. Pittman qualified 12th for Friday and ninth for Saturday.

Friday’s qualifying session set the lineup for the Elimination Showdown with the top 16 locking into the race. With a 12-car invert, Pittman, who qualified 12th for Friday’s program, was awarded the pole position. The top four cars in the Last Chance Showdown rounded out the 20-car field.

Dominic Scelzi, Jake Blackhurst, Mason Daniel and Shane Stewart were eliminated after the first five laps. Scotty Thiel, Ian Madsen, Bill Balog and Logan Schuchart were the next four to be eliminated. And then Tim Kaeding, Kraig Kiner, Parker Price-Miller and Brad Sweet were the final four to be eliminated.

Pittman, Schatz, Sheldon Haudenschild, Carson Macedo, David Gravel, Kerry Madsen, Jacob Allen and Paul Nienhiser lined up for the final eight lap dash.

Like the restarts before, Pittman gapped second-place Schatz by about half a straightaway and was on cruise control to the win. However, with two laps to go, Nienhiser brought out a caution due to a flat right rear tire.

When the race went back green, Schatz made Pittman work for the win. He dove underneath Pittman going into the first corner and slid in front of him exiting Turn 2. His last-ditch effort to steal the win faded a few seconds later when Pittman utilized the momentum built around the top of the track to dart back by Schatz down the backstretch. Pittman went on to win his first race of 2020 with Schatz second and Haudenschild third.

While the race wasn’t for points and doesn’t count as an official World of Outlaws win, Pittman was still happy to get extra seat time in preparation for the $20,000-to-win Features on Friday and Saturday.

“Truthfully, I was really just happy to get extra track time here,” Pittman said. “This historically hasn’t been one of my best racetracks. I love coming here. I run good at places a lot like it but never had a lot of success here. We definitely got better. Obviously, our starting position made a huge difference. My Roth Motorsports guys have been working hard. We just keeping making changes and improvements to our 83 car and we’re getting better (after two podium runs at the Jackson Nationals, as well).”

Winner Logan Schuchart (Trent Gower Photo)

JACKSON BLOCKBUSTER: Logan Schuchart claims first AGCO Jackson Nationals title
The Pennsylvanian wins his first crown jewel event in a barn burner Feature with seven lead changes

JACKSON, MN – June 27, 2020 – Crown jewels dangled in front of Logan Schuchart throughout 2019 but were never close enough for him to grab.

He finished second in the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway and then finished second at the Knoxville Nationals.

On Saturday night at the Jackson Motorplex, Schuchart fended off an assault of slide jobs and dive bombs throughout the 35-lap Feature to finally grab a crown jewel. He claimed the 42nd Annual Jackson Nationals title and the $30,000 prize that came with it.

“It’s awesome,” Schuchart said about winning the AGCO Jackson Nationals. “We’ve been so close to a couple of them (crown jewel events). It’s a huge win. Great for our team, without even thinking about the money. To win a race like this at a great facility with all of these great names here. To be able to win during these trying times in 2020 with everything that’s going on and to get a big win is great for our team.”

The win is his fourth of the season – second in a row at the 4/10-mile track – and 20th career World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win.

The Hanover, PA driver entered the night as the points leader with his Shark Racing team for the event after a fourth-place finish and a win in the preliminary races.

He finished second in the DIRTVision Fast Pass King of the Hill Dash behind winner Daryn Pittman, placing them on the front row of the 35-lap Feature.

Schuchart darted ahead of Pittman at the start of the Feature, bringing two-time and defending Jackson Nationals champion Brad Sweet and Sheldon Haudenschild along with him. The next 30 laps became a summer blockbuster worthy of an Oscar nomination.

The lead officially changed hand six times throughout the event – not counting every time Schuchart, Sweet and Haudenschild swapped the lead before crossing the finish line. Haudenschild stole the lead from Schuchart in lap traffic on Lap 10. However, a red flag for Parker Price-Miller’s flip in Turn 1 put Haudenschild and Schuchart side by side on the restart.

Unwilling to lose another crown jewel event, Schuchart timed the restart perfect and powered his way around the outside of Haudenschild to reclaim the lead. But Haudenschild, who is winless this year, was just as hungry for the victory. He charged his way back around Schuchart the next lap.

Their duel of the fates was not yet over. Schuchart threw a slide job on Haudenschild going into Turn 1 and reclaimed the lead on Lap Lap 13. And this time, he was able to pull away, running the high line. Haudenschild fell victim to Sweet, as well.

With Schuchart in the lead, Sweet second and Haudenschild third, the three drivers ran single file around the top of the track for about the next 10 laps.

Once the Feature was under 10 laps to go and Schuchart again caught slower traffic, Sweet and Haudenschild closed in.

Like fighter jets playing war games, seeing how close they can dive around each other without touching, the three drivers swapped lanes every corner to try and get an advantage on the other. Haudenschild and Sweet almost made contact exiting Turn 4, forcing Haudenschild over the cushion with eight laps to go. He faded to the clutches of Pittman, while Sweet went after Schuchart.

“The Big Cat” pounced on Schuchart and edged him for the lead on Lap 29, but Schuchart dove into Turn 1 and slid ahead of Sweet for the final time. With tires wearing down, the reigning Series champion had nothing more for Schuchart. The Drydene #1S drove away with one of the biggest wins in his career.

“It’s tough when you get guys like that, that are so good,” Schuchart said about having to race Sweet and Haudenschild for the win. “Sheldon is going to pound the top down and take his shots. He can pull a slider from way far away. And I knew Brad was going to be coming at the end. You just have to keep your composure with those guys. You just have to hit your marks and not get overly excited.”

Sweet finished on the podium all three nights of the 2020 AGCO Jackson Nationals, including a win on the first night. However, he had to settle for another runner-up finish with his Kasey Kahne Racing team.

“I went really hard there in the middle of the race and kind of used my one shot to get by Logan and didn’t make it stick,” said Sweet, of Grass Valley, CA. “He did a good job. I think he was able to set a nice pace out front and able to save his tires, while I tried to stay close.

“There’s some nights you just can’t get it done. NAPA Auto Parts guys gave me a good car. We’re working hard. It’s competitive out here right now. We’ll take a second and try to get better next week.”

Pittman was able to get around Haudenschild to finish third – his second podium finish in a row.

“We just got some work to do and got beat by, arguably, the two best cars on the tour this year,” said Pittman, of Owasso, OK. “We’re making gains.”

Haudenschild finsihed fourth in his NOS Energy Drink Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing car – his ninth top-10 finish in a row this year. David Gravel rounded out the top-five.

Ten-time Series champion and 2018 Jackson Nationals champion Donny Schatz ended the night eighth – his second top-10 finish in a row with his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team after four straight races outside the top-10.

Carson Macedo earned the KSE Racing Hard Charger award in his Kyle Larson Racing #2 car with his run from 18th to ninth. He’s now tied with Schuchart for the second most top-10 finishes, so far, this season with 14.

Now, with a crown jewel win under his beat, Schuchart said it only gives he and his team more confidence going forward this year.

Winner Logan Schuchart (Trent Gower Photo)

MARATHON MAN: Logan Schuchart ends long night at Jackson Motorplex with big win
The Shark Racing driver maintains AGCO Jackson Nationals points lead going into final night

JACKSON, MN – June 26, 2020 – Aside from the medal around his neck and a few drops of sweat sliding down his face, you’d never be able to tell Logan Schuchart just endured a six-hour marathon.

The Hanover, PA driver not only survived a double World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Feature night at the 4/10-mile Jackson Motorplex on Friday, he ended the night as the top driver.

After finishing fourth in round one of the 42nd Annual AGCO Jackson Nationals at the beginning of the night, Schuchart came back stronger in round two and won by close to five seconds. He now goes into Saturday’s AGCO Jackson Nationals $30,000-to-win finale with a 22-point lead over Daryn Pittman for the title.

“It feels good,” said Schuchart about his point lead in the crown jewel event. “With the different format you never know if you should sandbag or try to start on the pole. That’s a tough equation to figure that out. You see some cars miss it when they try and do that. We tried to go as fast as we could every time we hit the racetrack. It’s paid off for us. We’re going to be up front in this thing.”

He picked up valuable points throughout the night with runner-up finishes in his Drydene Heat Race and the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – placing him on the outside pole for the Feature.

When the green flag waved to start the 25-lap event, Schuchart got a bad start, allowing polesitter Jason Sides to pull away and Daryn Pittman to sneak underneath him. He saw an opening to charge back around both of them off Turn 2, though. While riding the high side of the track, Schuchart ran both of them down by the center of the corner. However, the opening he saw closed when Sides slid up the track and blocked his lane. Sides’ mistake allowed Pittman to dart out front.

Schuchart made his way by Sides shortly after and began to hunt Pittman down. He could inch closer to the Roth Enterprises #83 car every lap, but never enough to the point where he could make a run at Pittman. The two cars were about equal in speed.

That changed on Lap 9 when Pittman slid off Turn 2 while trying to pass a slower car and allowed Schuchart bolt by him for the lead. From then on, there was nothing Pittman could do. The Drydene #1S quickly put about a straightaway distance between them and continued to grow it every lap.

Pittman and third-place Brad Sweet, who won round one early in the day, were left to try and maintain their podium positions.

When Schuchart crossed the finish line, he had a 4.7 sec. lead over Pittman.

“I was a little worried at the beginning because Daryn is always fast here with the 83 team, where it here at Jackson or a big track or a little track. They’re always fast,” Schuchart said. “But we were able to get by there in lap traffic. It just seemed like lap cars, when I get up to them, it seemed like they were racing with each other and I was able to get by them at the right time.”

For Pittman, the runner-up finish is a welcomed solid run for he and his Roth Motorsports team, who are building momentum with a top-five at Tri-State Speedway last weekend and now a top-10 and runner-up finish at Jackson Motorplex.

“We just keep working on our car,” Pittman said. “I’m happy with the direction we’re going. Brent, Tony, Steven, they’ve been working their butts off. Not a lot of good results to show for it. Hopefully we’re turning the corner, getting a little bit better and continue to finish up front.”

Schuchart’s Shark Racing teammate Jacob Allen and 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz also had needed runs. Allen won the Last Chance Showdown and then charged from 21st to ninth. Schatz and his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team finished fifth – their first top-five and top-10 in four races.

While the first two legs of the AGCO Jackson Nationals championship marathon is over and Schuchart has a sizable lead, he knows completing the final leg on Saturday and winning his first Nationals title won’t be an easy task with Pittman 22 points back in second and reigning Jackson Nationals champion Sweet 32 points back in third.

“The 49 car (of reigning champion Sweet) is going to be fast tomorrow. Daryn is going to be fast,” Schuchart said. “But I think we have a fast Drydene Performance Products race car.”

ROUND ONE KNOCKOUT: Brad Sweet wins first round of AGCO Jackson Nationals
Kasey Kahne Racing gets early win, but Logan Schuchart takes Jackson Nationals points lead
JACKSON, MN – June 26, 2020 – After losing a win by inches last week, reigning champion Brad Sweet dominates the first of two Features Friday night for the 42 Annual AGCO Jackson Nationals.

Sweet, the two-time and defending AGCO Jackson Nationals champion, won his fourth World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Feature at the 4/10-mile Jackson Motorplex before having to turn around and run another Feature later in the night.

“We were slow in qualifying and had to make up for it," said Sweet, of Grass Valley CA. "Luckily we got the win."

Thursday night’s program was halted by rain and pushed to Friday evening before the official second night of the AGCO Jackson Nationals kicked off.

Sweet had made his way into the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash with a second-place run in his Drydene Heat Race. He then went on to secure another runner-up finish behind winner Austin McCarl in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – placing him on the outside pole for the 25-lap Feature.

When Feature went green, after a red flag on the initial start for Mark Dobmeier flipping in Turn 2, Sweet snuck to the outside of Austin McCarl and drove around him in Turns 3 and 4 to claim the lead on the first lap. From then on, it was “The Big Cat’s” show.

Sweet pulled away to about a straightaway lead over McCarl by the second lap of the race. He hit lap traffic on Lap 6, but the slower cars didn’t faze him. While McCarl was able to knock off a tenth of a second here and there when lap cars blocked the track in front of Sweet, the NAPA Auto Parts #49 gained those tenths back and more once he found clean air.

"I've felt comfortable here," said Sweet, who's won the last three 410 Sprint Car events at the track. "We have a good package here. Hats of to my guys."

Shane Stewart had an impressive run going in his Feature debut in Guy Forbrook’s #5 car, running third for most of the race. But on Lap 13 he had an issue and had to pull off track. It was a big enough issue to end his entire night. That moved Matt Juhl, who won at Jackson Motorplex in a 360-c.i. Sprint Car the week before, into third.

Neither Juhl or McCarl had anything for Sweet in the closing laps. He pulled his Kasey Kasey Racing car into Victory Lane for the fifth time this year with the World of Outlaws.

"Hopefully we can have a good night overall and it will put us in a good spot on Saturday (for the Jackson Nationals championship $30,000-to-win finale)," Sweet said.

McCarl finished second and Juhl rounded out the podium – career best World of Outlaws runs for the two drivers.

"He (Sweet) got a good run there on the top and got by me," McCarl said. "That's why he's a World of Outlaws champion. One of the best in the world right now."

While Sweet takes home the trophy, Logan Schuchart has the early points lead for the Jackson Nationals with his fourth-place finish in the Feature and other strong performances throughout the format, such as his runner-up qualifying run. Parker Price-Miller is second and Sheldon Haudenschild is third. Sweet is currently 12th in points. He qualified 25th in round one, which put him behind in points.

Winner Carson Macedo (Trent Gower Photo)

BY INCHES: Macedo wins thriller at Haubstadt during historic broadcast
Kyle Larson Racing wins during World of Outlaws' return to live national TV on CBS Sports Network

HAUBSTADT, IN – June 20, 2020 – Carson Macedo was prepared to leave Tri-State Speedway Saturday night with either a trophy or a wrecked car.

“I wanted to win really bad,” Macedo said.

Not only where he and his Kyle Larson Racing team eager for a return to Victory Lane, Saturday night’s World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series event awarded $10,000-to-win and was broadcasted live on CBS Sports Network – the first time since 2012 that the World of Outlaws have been live on national television.

He and reigning champion Brad Sweet thrilled fans watching around the world and at the Indiana track by putting on a duel that ended with Macedo edging Sweet by 0.064 seconds at the finish line.

“When he (Sweet) passed me on the restart, I basically said, ‘I was going to commit and either crash it or try to win,’” Macedo said while trying to catch his breath in Victory Lane. “I felt really good. When your race car is really good, it’s easy to make those kinds of decisions.”

The victory is his sixth career Series win and first of 2020. He had been building to it with three top-five finishes in the last three races, but Sweet and Jacob Allen made him work for it.

The trio turned the 40-lap Feature into an exhibition of slide jobs and close quarter racing.

Macedo, of Lemoore, CA, started on the pole due to his DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash win. Allen lined up alongside him and Sweet started fourth.

When the green flag dropped, Macedo darted ahead of Allen in the opening laps, but soon became prey to Allen’s Shark Racing #1A when he hit traffic on Lap 12. Sweet moved into third on the second lap.

Like Macedo, Allen, of Hanover, PA, was just as hungry for the win as he continues to seek his first World of Outlaws win.

The two young guns battled side by side for several laps. While Macedo ran high, Allen continuously dove underneath him into the turns but Macedo always had the better run off the turns to launch ahead of the Drydene car down the straightaways.

While they dueled, Sweet closed in. He got by Allen for second on Lap 25 and then ran down Macedo and took the lead four laps later.

However, before he could try to set his own pace out front, a caution came out that saw the end of Allen’s career best performance at the quarter-mile track.

Justin Peck spun in Turn 2, directly in Allen’s line. With nowhere to go, Allen slid into Peck and punctured his right rear tire.

Allen ended the night 13th, but the disappointing finish didn’t puncture his spirit.

“This is a track me and Logan… I’ll saw just me, have really struggled at,” Allen said after the race. “I don’t think I’ve ever made it out of the [Last Chance Showdown] or anything like that. Obviously, this is a big improvement. Just an unfortunate circumstance to get in an accident there, but I’m not mad. I was pretty happy with the race me and Macedo had going on for the lead. I thought that was a lot of fun. I hope the fans enjoyed that.”

With 11 laps to go, the field lined up two by two – a benefit for Macedo, who would restart on the outside of Sweet.

When the race resumed, Macedo continued to master the high side of the track and surprised Sweet by driving around the outside of his NAPA Auto Parts #49 and reclaimed the lead.

Macedo held command out front for the remaining laps, but Sweet found grip around the bottom in the closing laps and reeled the black #2 car in. When they drove off Turn 4 for the final time, Sweet snuck underneath Macedo and the two drivers drag raced to the finish line with Sweet inching further alongside Macedo the closer they got to the finish line.

With camera flashes lighting up the front stretch, pictures showed Macedo edging Sweet by the 0.064 sec. margin.

“He (Sweet) definitely made me earn it there,” Macedo said. “My car was incredible. I knew I was really good. I feel like at the beginning of the race I could set a really good pace. Just had a lot of balance. I think lap dirtied up my racetrack more where I was running. I was debating if I should move around or not.

“I think I got to traffic the first time by Lap 10 or 12. I started moving around. I thought maybe if I diamond off the corner it would be better, but I think I was losing ground. I started doing that at the end and Brad was able to get back to me. He’s a World of Outlaws champion for a reason and he made me earn it.”

Sweet’s runner-up finish is his third top-five in a row and helped him further extended his points lead over 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz – who finished 16th. He now leads Schatz by 66 points.

“It was nice to contend for the win,” Sweet said. “A little disappointed in myself. On that restart I knew I was going to be in a vulnerable place. I didn’t want to choose the top. I wanted to run the bottom and control my own destiny. I felt like I spun my tires a little… I think Carson, I think he really wanted that one bad and probably just laid her in there and he kind of surprised me that he made it around the outside.”

Ian Madsen, Daryn Pittman and Logan Schuchart rebounded from their Friday night performances with a top-five finish Saturday night. They finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

At the end of the night, Macedo was able to roll his car in the trailer in one piece and walk away with the trophy.

Winner Carson Short (Trent Gower Photo)

FIRST TIMER: Carson Short stands tall at Haubstadt for first win
Illinois driver holds off World of Outlaws stars for first Series win in 11 starts

HAUBSTADT, IN – June 19, 2020 – Carson Short held up the checkered flag as high as he could. Confetti rained around him. The crowd of 5,000 people sounded like 20,000 with their empathic cheers echoing around the speedway.

If you asked Short, he just won the Knoxville Nationals. Or at least that’s what it felt like to the Marion, IL driver.

After fending off slide job attacks by Sheldon Haudenschild, Short went on to win his first career World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win Friday night at Tri-State Speedway.

“It feels great,” Short said getting his first Series win. “Especially here. It’s where I won my first USAC race, too. It’s a great track. Everyone says it’s a different track. It’s technical. I felt like tonight was up top, running the cushion. It just feels great.”

Short led all 30 laps to claim the win in his 11th World of Outlaws start, driving for his grandfather, Richard Short’s small underfunded team. He also became the first first-time winner in more than a year for the Series.

Before the night, Short had two top-10 finishes with the Series – the first coming at Tri-State Speedway. While he only has a handful of starts in a winged Sprint Car, he has several laps around the quarter-mile track. With it being about an hour and a half from his Illinois home, Tri-State became a home track for Short. And the fans treated him as a hometown driver all night long.

“You don’t get any better than the fans here at Haubstadt,” Short said. “They’re just down home ready to watch some Sprint Car racing. They love it. It’s just the atmosphere. Winning at Haubstadt, I feel like it’s the small track of the Knoxville Nationals, if you will, with the fans. Those guys are crazy.”

Short earned the pole position for the 30-lap Feature with his win in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash. He took the lead from Haudenschild on the first lap and never looked back.

The same happened at the start of the Feature. However, Haudenschild didn’t let Short get away.

On Lap 7, Short got sideways off Turn 2, allowing Haudenschild to plan an attack to pass for the next turn. Before he could, Jeff Swindell flipped in Turn 2, bringing out the red flag.

When the race resumed, Short maintained about a two-car length distance on the NOS Energy Drink #17 car. Even when he had to wrangle his way through lap traffic, Short looked like a veteran slicing through traffic with ease.

With five laps to go, Haudenschild threw a Hail Mary slide job underneath Short’s #21 car going into Turn 3. He took the lead, but Short was able to cross underneath him and bolt back ahead of him down the straightaway. From then on, Haudenschild couldn’t get close enough again to attempt another slider. He had to settle for the runner-up finish.

“Hats off to Carson, he did a phenomenal job,” said Haudenschild, of Wooster, OH. “I was waiting on him to make a mistake and he didn’t do it. Then, I was waiting on traffic and he got through there really well. Congrats to him. I love seeing first time winners. Congrats to him. I’m happy with a second.

“We’ve been really good here. Just keep this momentum rolling. I keep telling my guys, if we keep being in this top-five we’re going to win races. We’re just working for that.”

His second-place finish was his second in a row at the track and his sixth top-five finish in the last seven races, which helped move him up to fourth in the championship standings – 124 points behind leader Brad Sweet.

David Gravel, of Watertown, CT, rounded out the podium. His third-place finish is a welcomed rebound from his 19th-place finish at Knoxville Raceway last weekend.

Behind him in fourth was Carson Macedo, of Lemoore, CA – his third fourth-place finish in a row.

Fellow Californian and reigning champion Brad Sweet, of Grass Valley, CA, finished fifth, extending his points lead over 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz – who finished 11th for the second race in a row – to 38 points.

Sweet swept the weekend at Beaver Dam Raceway and then the next weekend at Knoxville Raceway was swept by Kyle Larson.

Will Short be next in line to sweep the World of Outlaws’ first doubleheader weekend at Tri-State Speedway during the live broadcast on CBS Sports Network Saturday night?

“God, I hope so,” Short said with a chuckle and smile on his face. “Yeah, the car is on rails. I don’t think the track is going to change any. It (the #21 car) would go anywhere I wanted it to go. Even when (Haudenschild) showed me the nose with his slide job, I could cross underneath. It just had speed everywhere. Yeah, I feel like we can back it up tomorrow night and get another win.”

Winner Kyle Larson (Trent Gower Photo)

DOUBLE TAP: Kyle Larson sweeps Knoxville doubleheader for $20K payday
Brownells Big Guns Bash weekend dominated by Larson; Sweet rebounds and extends points lead

KNOXVILLE, IA – June 13, 2020 – Kyle Larson’s head fell from the weight of disappointment after looking at the small wooden ball for his pill draw.

He drew pill 56, putting him out third to last for qualifying.

Six hours later, he stood atop the wing of Paul Silva’s #57 Sprint Car in World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Victory Lane Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway for the second night in a row – picking up $20,000 in winnings between the two nights.

“Thanks to everyone on this car,” said an elated Larson. “Everybody who has helped me out. It just means a lot to be out here having fun, challenging for wins every night.”

He bested the past two Series champions to the sweep the Brownells Big Guns Bash weekend, beating 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz the first night and reigning champion Brad Sweet the next.

The win was not only the Elk Grove, CA native’s third World of Outlaws win this season – the first time he’s won more than two Series races in a year – but his fifth Sprint Car win in six days. No one and nothing have been able to get in the way of his trophy hunting path.

His pill draw that left him walking away with his head down earlier in the day proved to be a misleading obstacle. Larson qualified second in his Flight and then went on to win the fourth Drydene Heat Race of the night. Larson looked poised early on to back up his dominating performance from Friday.

However, Daryn Pittman stepped up in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash. He took the lead on the first lap and beat Sweet, by two seconds.

When the 30-lap Feature commenced, Pittman made the rest of the field look like they were down a cylinder. He had close to a three second lead by the third lap.

That ended six laps later. While trying to lap David Gravel in Turn 2, Pittman and he touched wheels, spinning each other. Both continued, but never recovered from their starting spots at the back of the field, finishing 18th and 19th, respectively.

Pittman’s misfortune handed the lead to Larson, who only held it for a lap before reigning Knoxville Raceway track champion Brian Brown took it from him on Lap 11. Larson then had to fend off his brother-in-law Sweet to hold second.

“I took a glance at the board on the restart and saw that he (Brown) was right on me,” Larson said. “I knew he was right on me. I knew he was going to run the top in (turns) three and four and thought if I could get a good three and four, he might not slide me the next end. But I didn’t get through there like I needed to, and he got the run and got by me. I knew my car was really good, so I just stayed patient behind him. Then Brad, he got to my inside and I cleared him off of (turn) two, otherwise that could have been the deciding factor of the race.”

Larson’s battle with Sweet showed him there was grip around the bottom of the half-mile track, which led him back to Brown’s bumper.

Larson reclaimed the lead with 17 laps to go. Sweet followed him by Brown for second, setting up the third duel this year between family members. However, Sweet’s Kasey Kahne Racing NAPA Auto Parts #49 couldn’t contend with the Finley Farms #57. Even through lap traffic, Larson maintained about a three second lead of Sweet.

“He (Larson) did a really good job,” Sweet, of Grass Valley, CA, said. “He was driving really hard. He’s a great race car driver. He runs the car on the ragged edge and makes it work and gets by lap cars. We had a great race car tonight compared to last night. A lot of great notes moving forward here. Big gains.”

Sweet’s second-place finish was an improved from his 12th-place run Friday night – the first time he finished outside the top-10 in 2020. With Schatz finishing 11th, Sweet extended his points lead over the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing to a 26-point gap.

Logan Schuchart remains third, 40 points behind Sweet, but also had a needed rebound Saturday night after two straight finishes outside the top-20. He drove his Drydene #1A from eighth to third.

“We had a night without struggles,” Schuchart, of Hanover, PA, said. “We’ll take some notes and see if we can qualify a little bit better. Seems like we have the racing thing down, just need to qualify better to put ourselves in better positions.”

Carson Macedo, who drivers for Kyle Larson’s Sprint Car team, brought his Tarlton & Son #2 home fourth for the second night in a row. His strong runs helped propelled him to fourth in points.

At the end of the day, there was nothing for Larson to hang his head about.

“Another good car,” Larson said. “Just sweet to have five in a row in a Sprint Car now. It feels pretty awesome. In front of a great crowd, too. It makes it feel even better.”
