BRIDGEPORT MOTORSPORTS PARK OPENING IS A HUGE SUCCESS
Bridgeport, NJ – It finally happened. After months of construction and preparation The Bridgeport Motorsports Park – The Kingdom of Speed – opened its gates for the delayed 2020 season opener. All three divisions – The Foley Cat Modifieds, South Jersey Overhead Door 602 Sportsman and Sunbelt Rental Street Stocks – provided plenty of side by side action, three and four abreast racing with multiple groove racing from the first green flag to the final checkered.
Doug Rose’s plan for a reconfigured, banked speedway that would be smaller than the former 5/8th mile track, received mixed reactions from fans and competitors alike but the doubts were put aside with the great racing action provided by the brand new racing surface on Sunday.
Ryan Godown took the win in the Foley Cat Modifieds, holding off the challenges of Rick Laubach and then Richie Pratt Jr. who chased Godown across the finish line. Godown and Laubach had traded the lead briefly before Godown put his Searock No. 26 out in front for good.
Trailing Godown and Pratt to the checkered were Danny Bouc in the Short Load No. 32, Laubach in the Hermann No 7 and Briggs Danner in his family owned No. 78. Billy Pauch, Jr., Ryan Watt, Craig VonDohren, Ryan Krachun and Davey Sammons completed the top ten at the end of thirty laps.
Steve Kemery picked up the win in the South Jersey Overhead Door 602 Crate Sportsman feature event, starting off the season just as he did last year by winning the opening day race. Scott Hitchens pressured Kemery throughout the race and actually took the lead just before the halfway mark. Hitchens led lap nine and ten before Kemery regained the top spot. Hitchens went on to finish second behind Kemery with Ryan Anderson finishing third. Sean Metz chose the line around the bottom of the race track and made it work for a fourth place finish ahead of Joe Toth in fifth. Tom Moore, Jr., Ricky Wegner, Jr., Brad Roberts, 2019 Champion, Matt Peck and Johnny Bangs picked up top ten finishes in the season opener.
Rich Stinson, Jr. took advantage of a lap six restart to take the lead from 2019 Champion, Tom Wills, Jr. in the Sunbelt Rentals Street Stock feature event. The top three cars – Stinson, Wills, Jr., and Lee Allen – kept it interesting through the fifteen lap event with Wills and Allen staying within striking range of Stinson. There was an ongoing battle taking place behind the leaders as Vern McLaughlin, Jeff Dirkes and Mike Hughes, Jr. battled for the fourth spot. McLaughlin won the position, taking fourth over Hughes who finished fifth. Dirkes, Tom Wills, Sr., Mick Search, Justin Nowlen and Nick Sandone III finished sixth through tenth.
Action returns to the Kingdom of speed on Sunday, July 5th for the All American 40 – a forty lap feature event for the Foley Cat Modifieds. The United Racing Club 360 Sprint Cars will be the first sprint cars to compete on the new track and will join the four division show that will also feature the South Jersey Overhead Door 602 Sportsman and Sunbelt Rental Street Stocks. Grandstand seating will be limited to tickets sold prior to the event to maintain limits set by the governor. Pit gates will open at 3pm with the grandstand gates opening at 5pm, warm-ups at 6pm and the first green flag of the night at 7pm. KYLE LARSON MAKES THE MOVE ON FREDDIE RAHMER TO WIN THE HODNETT CUP AND POCKET $10,000, RYAN WATT TOPS MODIFIEDS
BECHTELSVILLE, PA (June 30, 2020) – A late race slider led Elks Grove, California’s Kyle Larson to a $10,000 win in the Pennsylvania 410 Sprint Car Speed Week event presented by Red Robin. Ryan Watt of Boyertown, PA picked up the NASCAR 358 Modified victory and $3,000 at Grandview Speedway on Tuesday Night, as part of the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series. With scattered showers over Grandview Speedway from noon to 7 PM the track crew and staff of Thunder on the Hill was determined to get this event in the books, and they did. The win also earned Kyle Larson his place on the Greg Hodnett Cup and perpetual trophy. Hodnett, a six time Thunder Champion and nine time Thunder on the Hill feature winner was remembered Tuesday night after losing his life in a racing accident in 2018.
In the 410 Sprint Cars, Larson overtook Freddie Rahmer to win was his third Grandview win in four years after scoring the 2017 and 2018 editions of the Speed Week event.
“Freddie (Rahmer) set such a good pace on the restarts, I’m surprised I could stay with him,” Larson said while celebrating his big payday. “At times we were good, it’s great to get a win.”
NASCAR Cup Series competitor, Christopher Bell set Fast Time and by the luck of the draw started on the pole of the 35-lap A-Main event. At the drop of the green flag, Bell pulled away to about a straightaway lead over Freddie Rahmer setting the pace for the first five circuits around the the one-third mile, Grandview high banks.
Bell’s night would come to an end quickly, after Kyle Reinhardt slowed collecting the leader, and handing the lead to Freddie Rahmer.
Rahmer hit lapped traffic on the 11th trip around the track, but that didn’t faze him, he switched lanes sliding passed cars, while Larson had his hands full battling Sammy Swindell for second position.
Larson would move into second on the 20th lap, and closed on Rahmer in lapped traffic.
A late race restart opened the door and Larson pulled a slide job on Rahmer, pulling away for the victory and the Greg Hodnett Memorial Cup.
Rahmer finished in second and Sammy Swindell rounded out the podium. Ryan Smith finished in fourth and Danny Dietrich completed the top five finishers.
There was no cruise control on the way to victory for Ryan Watt in the NASCAR 358 Modified feature event. Kevin Hirthler led the field to the green flag running side-by-side with Watt for the first 6 laps before Watt’s No. 14W machine could complete the pass.
The top five ran nose-to-tail with Watt leading the way followed by Hirthler, Craig VonDohren, Jeff Strunk and Brett Kressley. Kressley tangled with a lapped car, bringing out the first yellow flag of the night.
On the restart, the top-5 used every inch of the Grandview Speedway battling it out, with Strunk claiming the second spot.
Watt picked up the $3,000 win, Strunk settled for second, while Craig VonDohren, Kevin Hirthler, and Doug Manmiller rounded out the top five.
The NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series returns on Tuesday, August 4 with the Ken Brenn Midget Masters featuring the USAC National Midget Series and the return of the NASCAR 358 Modifieds. VON DOHREN AND BUTLER WIN SEASON OPENING POINT RACES AT GRANDVIEW, SCHAEFFER TOPS IN OUTLAW VINTAGE FEATURE
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. June 27. . . Despite rain being all around the area of the 1/3-mile Grandview Speedway clay oval, action was never interrupted as the first championship point events were run off.
Craig Von Dohren, who started deep in the pack in last Saturday’s opening night activities, had a better starting spot for the first point race of the season and it worked to his advantage in the 30-lap T.P. Trailers NASCAR Advanced Auto Parts Modified feature on Saturday night. By winning the first qualifying heat and a heads up start Von Dohren was the polesitter. Numerous competitors tried to take the lead away from the ten-time point champion on various occasions, but were unsuccessful. At the drop of the checkered Von Dohren pulled the PPB sponsored No. 1C into victory lane to begin the quest towards a possible eleventh title.
The 25-lap T.P. Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman feature was a nip and tuck battle between winner Jack Butler and runner-up Brandon Edgar. Both drivers dueled side-by-side for several laps with neither one giving up as Butler went on to take the checkered.
Scott Schaeffer won the 15-lap Outlaw Vintage Racing Series feature after he inherited the top spot when leader Jon Lines relinquished the position dropping out with mechanical problems.
Providing the feature winners met the necessary requirements, they received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Von Dohren and Butler.
At the wave of the green in the Modified feature by starter Ray Kemp, Von Dohren was on a mission trailed by Jared Umbenhauer, Ryan Higgs, Briggs Danner and Brett Kressley. Kressley was in second at the end of eight laps and in pursuit of Von Dohren. Mark Kratz stopped along the homestretch for the first caution on the ninth lap. On the restart with Von Dohren and Kressley door handle to door handle, contact was made as Von Dohren didn’t “realize” Kressley was so close to him heading out of the fourth turn heading into turn one. Kressley lost valuable positions as Von Dohren was still the leader. Battling for second through fifth were Umbenhauer, Doug Manmiller, Duane Howard and Jeff Strunk. Manmiller took over second on the 14th lap and took chase after Von Dohren, who was approaching lapped traffic by the 18th circuit. The final caution was on the 21st lap when Mike Lisowski’s car erupted with steam bellowing out of it in the four turn. Von Dohren held his spot with Manmiller in a challenging position trailed by defending point champion Howard, Strunk and Umbenhauer. With six laps to go Howard overtook second and set his sights on Von Dohren. No one was able to catch and pass Von Dohren as he pulled into the winner’s circle for his first triumph of the season. Finishing second was Howard followed by Manmiller, Strunk and Umbenhauer. Rounding out the top ten were Ryan Grim, Kressley, John Willman, Kyle Weiss and Louden Reimert.
Heats were won by Von Dohren, Umbenhauer and Danner. Clay Butler won the consi.
Brandon Edgar led four laps of the Sportsman feature before the yellow came out for a fourth turn tangle between Derrick Smith and Kyle Lilick. On the restart Butler charged into first coming off the fourth turn to become the new leader. Edgar didn’t give him any room to falter and he stuck right with Butler trying to regain control. While Butler stuck to the inside groove and Edgar on the outside jockeyed for first, Brian Hirthler and defending point champion Brad Brightbill had their own battle for third. Edgar made several runs at Butler in an attempt to regain control, but each one failed. Butler never lost the lead and went on the score his first victory of the year and his third career win. Finishing a close second was Edgar followed by Brightbill, Hirthler and Mark Kemmerer. Sixth through tenth were Brett Gilmore, Jesse Landis, Ryan Beltz, Kyle Lilick and Chris Esposito. Edgar, Butler, Nate Brinker and Hirthler were the heat winners. Consies went to Brad Arnold and Kenny Bock.
Saturday, July 4, the Sportsman will be the highlight of the night with the Firecracker 40-lap feature rewarding the winner with $2,000 along with a full show of Modifieds set to get underway at 7:30 p.m.

A star-filled night is planned for Tuesday, June 30 at the Grandview Speedway when the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presents the RED ROBIN 410 SPRINT SPEED WEEK $10,000 to win Hodnett Cup. Joining the 410 Sprints will be the 358 NASCAR Modifieds. Gates open at 5 PM with race time set for 7:30 PM Along with the rich payoff, this race is dedicated to one of the all-time great Sprint Car drivers, Greg Hodnett who lost his life in a racing accident in 2018. Hodnett is a six time Thunder Series champion and a nine time feature winner at Grandview.
Some of the top 410 Sprint Car drivers in country will be on the Hill at Grandview Tuesday night, including Lance Dewease, a ten time Thunder on the Hill feature winner, just one win behind Billy Pauch, the winningest sprint car driver at Grandview with eleven victories. Sammy Swindell is expected to be in the field and his one and only Thunder on the Hill victory came on May 29, 1996 in a World of Outlaws event. Always exciting, Rico Abreu of Rutherford, CA is coming to the Hill to chase his first Thunder win. Freddie Rahmer Jr, a one time winner at Grandview is always fast on the high-banked one-third mile oval. Danny Dietrich, Lucas Wolfe, Brent Marks, Ryan Smith, Anthony Macri and TJ Stutts are all contenders for the $10,000 Hodnett Cup prize.
Joining the high powered 410 Sprints will be the always exciting 358 NASCAR Modifieds taking part in a series of qualifying events leading up to the $3,000 to win 30 lap feature. Possible modified entries include Craig VonDohren, Duane Howard, Mike Gular, Jeff Strunk, Doug Manmiller and Ryan Watt.
Event sheets and payoff details for both the 410 Sprints and 358 Modifieds are posted on the website at www.thunderonthehillracingseries.com. Grandstand admission for this event is $30 for adults, $10 for children 6 to 11 and kids five and under will be admitted for free. The Pit fee is $40 and a license is not required.
Advance tickets for this event are available by calling 443-513-4456. Please speak clearly, provide you first and last name and the number of tickets you need. There is no need to leave your phone number. Tickets may be paid for and picked up on race night at the Will Call Window after 4:30 PM. With advance tickets, you may enter the grandstands immediately after receiving your tickets. We do ask that you please bring exact change. General admission tickets will go on sale at 5 PM.
The Thunder Series will continue on Tuesday night, August 4 when the USAC National Midgets invade the Hill for the 2nd Annual Ken Brenn Midget Masters also joined by the 358 NASCAR Modifieds with action getting underway at 7:30 PM. On Thursday night, August 27, Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions 410 sprints will bring the party to the Hill with the 358 NASCAR Modifieds being part of this double header on Levan Machine & Truck Night at Grandview.
The Thunder Series will close out 2020 with the Annual October Halloween event on Saturday night, October 17 with the Trick or Treat Triple 20’s for 358 Modifieds joined by the Sportsman with a 6 PM starting time.

2020 marks the thirty-first season of the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series at Grandview Speedway. Grandview Speedway is a one-third mile high banked dirt oval located on Passmore Road, just off Route 100 in Bechtelsville, PA.

The brainchild of Grandview Speedway owner Bruce Rogers, special events promoter Bob Miller and local driving star Dave Kelly, the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series celebrates 31 years of the most anticipated events of the racing calendar year after year. In 137 events, over $4.8 million dollars has been divvied up among the area's fastest racers. What started as a single 410 Sprint Car event in 1990 has blossomed to feature a variety of racing action including 358 Modifieds, USAC Wingless Sprints, All-Star Circuit of Champions, USAC Midgets, 360 & 410 Sprint Cars, Sportsman, Late Models, Midgets, Legend Cars, DIRTcar and ROC Modified events.

Grandview Speedway is a high-banked one-third mile clay oval, celebrating their 58th Anniversary season in 2020. Race fans may take part in the Inside/Out promotion, where you can sign up (no charge) to watch warm-ups from inside turn four. NASCAR SANCTIONED SATURDAY NIGHT STOCK CAR RACING ACTION JUNE 27 AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY, SPRINTS AND STOCKS ON TUESDAY, JUNE 30
Bechtelsville, PA June 23 . . . Fans will get a chance to see another exciting night of auto racing action at Grandview Speedway this Saturday, June 27, when a full show of T.P. Trailers Modified and T.P. Trailers Truck Equipment Sportsman is presented which will kick off the point season with the Blast From The Past Vintage Cars a part of the tripleheader show set to get underway at 7:30 p.m.
Adult admission is $15 while youngsters under 12 are admitted free. Spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m.
Fans are reminded to practice social distancing. Masks are recommended but not mandatory and if you are not feeling well please consider staying home.
The NASCAR sanction will be back in place this Saturday with Advance Auto Parts as their new national sponsor. Drivers will be required to have a NASCAR license. This provides them with the highest insurance coverage of 1 million dollars along with a full point fund for fewer races run this season. NASCAR sanctioned races have been decreased from 18 to 14. The state championship payout will remain the same with a payout of $2,000.00 for 1st, $1,000 for 2nd along with a custom driver’s suit valued at $1,200.00. The National Championship will be 4 less races. Through NASCAR the Modifieds have an $8,500 point fund, and Sportsman $3,000 for track points.
Grandview Speedway will continue to offer their own point fund making the track one of very few that reward racers with two point fund payoffs at the end of the season.
Pit crew members wishing to purchase a NASCAR license will receive the same insurance at the highest amount of $1million coverage. However, if the crew chooses not to purchase a license for the remainder of the 2020 race season they can pay an extra $5.00 for each event, but will include less insurance coverage. If a driver or crew member chooses to purchase the temporary license they will receive the full insurance coverage for the night. Temporary licenses are available for $25.00 for one night, or $50 for 3 weeks.
All licenses must be shown at the pit window or there will be an extra $5 charge for pit admission.
NASCAR licenses for Modified racers are priced at $200 for the season. Sportsman racers pay $110 and pit crew members pay $100.
Racers are reminded that T.P.Trailers/Truck Equipment decals must be displayed clearly visible on the race car in order to be eligible for their bonus awards.
In other news the Blast from the Past Vintage events will now be allowing the Outlaw class which allows anyone who is not a Blast from the Past member to race in all scheduled races this year.
Two premier divisions will come together, on the same night, at the same track and it all takes place at the Grandview Speedway as the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presents the Pennsylvania 410 Sprints and NASCAR 358 Modifieds on Tuesday night, June 30 with a 7:30 PM starting time. Gates open at 5 PM. There is no NASCAR license required.
This event is part of the Pennsylvania 410 Sprint Speed Week Series and will showcase the 35 lap $10,000 to win Hodnett Cup. Along with the rich payoff, this race is dedicated to one of the all-time great Sprint Car drivers, Greg Hodnett who lost his life in a racing accident in 2018. Hodnett is a six time Thunder Series champion and a nine time feature winner at Grandview.
Coming up on Saturday, July 4th the Sportsman racers will be in the limelight as they take part in the Firecracker 40. And the Modifieds will make up the second part of the Holiday weekend show. Sportsman will be racing for a hefty $2,000 to win. Adult admission is $22 while youngsters 6 thru 11 pay $5. Children under 6 are admitted free.
