SWEET, SWEET VICTORY: KOFOID WINS FIRST AT SWEET SPRINGS

Sweet Springs, Missouri (September 5, 2020).........After pounding on the door all throughout his Rookie USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget campaign, Buddy Kofoid finally bust through that door for his first career feature victory with the series on Saturday night at Missouri's Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex.
With four second-place finishes to his name in USAC National Midget competition this year, the time seemed nigh for the Penngrove, Calif. native to reach the top of the totem pole. Patience is a virtue, and the 18-year-old displayed it in droves, and was primed to strike when the opportunity arose, leading the final 12 laps en route to becoming the initial first-time series winner of the 2020 season.
"We've been working on this one for a long time," an elated Kofoid stated. "To finally be able to put a USAC win on my resume, quite a few people have done it, but not very many people have, at the same time. To finally do it, especially for this team, the most prestigious midget team in the world, is really special."
Kofoid's triumph came just one night following a rough-and-tumble opening lap that saw him barrel-roll three times down the back straightaway during the first night at Sweet Springs. After walking away dejected and dour, Kofoid looked on as his teammate, Cannon McIntosh, won KKM's first USAC race of the year, adding fuel to Kofoid's yearning for his next shot just 24 hours later.
"I knew we were fast enough last night, and we were starting in a really good position," Kofoid recalled. "It's kind of hard to say now, but yesterday, I felt like I was good enough to maybe contend for a win. I kind of got crashed on the first half-lap, which really hurt us for points, but also my pride a little bit. To come back and get redemption is really cool."
To win is to beat the best, and Kofoid endured and dodged every single arrow shot his way from the likes of his teammates to the defending series champ, all while having to start from the seventh position on the grid at the 1/6-mile dirt bullring.
As it turned out, indeed it was the defending champ, Tyler Courtney, who slung himself out to the early race lead from his outside front row starting position.
The first stoppage of the night arrived on the sixth lap and involved 14th running Andrew Felker who bounced his way through turn one before flipping over, an incident which also collected Robert Dalby and Thomas Meseraull. Meseraull was the only of the three who resumed and raced back to a 9th place result.
By lap 10, Kofoid had worked his way to 3rd and began waging war with Justin Grant for the runner-up position. The two swapped sliders for the next three circuits until the two made contact on lap 12 in turn four, which sent Grant sideways and dropped him through the pack. Meanwhile, Friday night's Sweet Springs winner Cannon McIntosh slipped by both Grant and Kofoid to take 2nd.
On the restart following Kaylee Bryson's turn one flip on the 15th lap, McIntosh surged to the lead by the time the pair hit the back straightaway, utilizing the bottom of the surface to ride past Courtney, then proceeded to open up a two second advantage out front as the race reached its halfway point.
Kofoid caught Courtney on the 28th lap through the thick of the traffic and slid by Courtney for 2nd at the exit of turn four. A moment and one lap later, 11th running Tanner Thorson was stopped backwards in turn one, bringing out the caution, thus clearing the traffic away from the leader, McIntosh, but put Kofoid right on his tail for the restart.
The chase Kofoid put on McIntosh didn't last long as Kofoid hit the bottom of turn three on the ensuing lap 29 restart and slid past McIntosh, clearing him for the number one spot at the exit of turn four.
A resurgent McIntosh returned to pose a threat to Kofoid once again for the lead on the 34th lap, setting up his slider into turn three with a full head of steam. However, instead, McIntosh clipped the turn three infield berm with left front tire, sending him sliding to a stop on the topside of turns three and four. With his bid for a repeat victory vanished, McIntosh restarted and finished 12th.
Kofoid then had to withstand multiple restarts down the stretch, the final one coming with three laps remaining with Courtney now assuming the role of the shadow in 2nd. Courtney followed Kofoid the first circuit, then found a run off of turn two coming to the white flag that allowed him to close rapidly on Kofoid, thus setting up what turned out to be his one and only, final haymaker.
Courtney threw his machine hard to the bottom of three before sliding up toward Kofoid up against the cushion. With no sense of rattle or hesitation, Kofoid never blinked, kept his foot on the throttle and denied Courtney the lead by racing back around on the outside of turn four. Courtney, meanwhile, banked off the turn four cushion and lost too much ground to make another run for the win on the final lap as Kofoid raced away and edged Courtney by two car lengths at the line.
After a 27-race winless drought in USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midgets for Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports was ended on Friday night by McIntosh, it took just one more night for the next victory to arrive for the Columbus, Ind. based team who made it an undefeated 4-for-4 in terms of USAC Midget feature victories at Sweet Springs after previous triumphs by Logan Seavey (2018) and Tanner Carrick (2019), and Kofoid was going to give everything and do whatever the task required to continue the winning streak.
"When we were taking the white, he threw a slider and when I saw him, I pretty much said 'I'm not lifting,'" Kofoid remembered. "I was already committed and just squeaked by. (Courtney) even said, 'I don't know how you got by.' At the end of the day, I just wanted it badly and I was going to do anything it took to do that."
Earlier, in Fatheadz Eyewear Qualifying, Kofoid's KKM teammate, Kaylee Bryson, became the first female to set fast time during a USAC National Midget event since Holly Shelton in 2018 at Solomon Valley Raceway in Beloit, Kans., also driving for KKM. Bryson later established the 12-lap USAC National Midget track record at Sweet Springs during the Indy Race Parts/Indy Metal Finishing semi-feature at 2:31.066.
Furthermore, Spencer Bayston, the 2017 USAC National Midget champion, set a new 10-lap USAC National Midget track record at Sweet Springs with a time of 2:03.300 during Simpson Race Products heat race one.

KEVIN HIRTHLER WINS MODIFIED FEATURE, TOM MILLER TOPS IN SPORTSMAN AND RYAN LILICK TAKES FIRST PLACE IN MODIFIED HARD CHARGER CHALLENGE.
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. September 6, 2020 . . . Kevin Hirthler tallied up his third 30-lap T.P. Trailers Modified NASCAR Advance Auto Parts feature win of the season on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway when he passed his father-in-law Ray Swinehart on the 21st lap and was able to hold off ten time track champion Jeff Strunk and then runner-up Dillon Steuer for the win. Even though Hirthler has won features this year he has struggled with mechanical and other issues and he assured the fans in victory lane that he has not been “sandbagging” or wrecking just to get a better starting spot.
Tom Miller has been close on numerous occasions to win a 25-lap T.P. Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman feature, but was never able to find his way to the winner’s circle for one reason or another. He finally turned the tables around and held off the challenges of Kyle Smith for the last ten laps of the event for his first win of the year.
The 22-lap Hard Charger Challenge feature, a special event for racers who had not won a Modified feature race at Grandview before or were not in the top 15 spots in the Modified point standings was won by Ryan Lilick earning the young racer $1,022. The event was put together by former car owner and driver Joe “Geezer” Fanelli. In addition to the Joey Adams custom created check Lilick was given the opportunity to start the 30-lap Modified feature in last or to try for a better spot in a heat race. Lilick, a Sportsman regular, chose to run in a qualifying heat and won giving him a better feature starting spot.
Feature winners that met the necessary requirements received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Swinehart and Scott Kohler. Kyle Smith received an extra bonus from the track for being the highest finisher with a Sportsman crate engine. Several cash and product awards went to competitors in the Challenge event courtesy of a variety of sponsors.
Ray Swinehart was the early leader in the Modified feature with grandson and already a feature winner this year Dylan Swinehart, Mike Lisowski, Kyle Weiss and Hirthler in pursuit.
The red had to be thrown on the fourth lap after Doug Manmiller tooked a violent flip along the homestretch coming to a rest on the catch fence. He was uninjured, however, the car was destroyed. Also eliminated since they were left with nowhere to go were Richie Hitzler and back-to-back feature winner Brett Kressley. When action resumed Swinehart was still first with Weiss, Hirthler, D. Swinehart and Steuer completing the order.
Rich Laubach slowed on the 15th lap with a flat to bring out the caution. D. Swinehart and Weiss, running second, dropped out with mechanical issues. The pacesetter continued to be Swinehart on the restart.
The lead changed for the second time on the 18th lap when Hirthler put the Dave George powered Bicknell mount, Green Lane/W Penn No. 117 at the front of the pack. Swinehart didn’t surrender easily and stayed right with Hirthler running the inside trek while Hirthler ran high.
Swinehart’s chances of winning diminished when he hit the second turn infield tire and spun on the 22nd lap. Now behind Hirthler on the restart were Steuer, current point leader Craig Von Dohren, Craig Whitmoyer, who along with the crew really had their work cut out for the night after he hit the wall with heavy impact in warmups but he returned and in a challenging spot and Duane Howard.
Louden Reimert and Carroll Hine III created the last yellow on the 23rd lap after a third turn spin. At the same time Howard relinquished fifth with a flat, but returned and finished tenth.
Hirthler continued his momentum and went on to win his 15th career feature. Steuer was second for his best finish trailed by Strunk, Von Dohren and Whitmoyer. Sixth through tenth were Mike Gular, Justin Grim, Jared Umbenhauer, Ryan Grim and Duane Howard.
Ryan Lilick, R. Swinehart, Strunk and Von Dohren won the heats. Consies were won by Ron Haring Jr. and Bobby Trapper Jr.
Scott Kohler was the early leader of the Sportsman feature in search of his second win.
Jockeying for positions were Miller, Cole Stangle, Dakota Kohler and Kyle Smith.
Just as Miller closed in on S. Kohler, D. Kohler hit the second turn equipment tire and spun on the 14th lap bunching the field together. Miller overtook S. Kohler who started to lose positions as K. Smith, Nate Brinker, Stangle and Brad Arnold got by.
The red was thrown when Mike Laise, who returned to action after an absence, hit the third turn wall with heavy impact. He was uninjured, but the car was badly damaged. Miller was still in the number one position when action went green again.
Miller kept the competition behind him and went on to post his second career victory in which he thanked his sons for all their help and commented he was going to go relax and enjoy finish. Following him across the line were K. Smith, Stangle, Brinker and Arnold. Kyle Lilick, Brian Hirthler, Ryan Beltz, Mark Kemmerer and Nathan Mohr rounded out the top ten.
Stangle, S. Kohler and Jimmy Leiby won the heats and Jesse Leiby won the consi.
In the Hard Charger Challenge Richie Hitzler set the early pace with Bobby Gunther Walsh challenging. Joe Funk III had mechanical problems and came to a stop on the homestretch bringing out the caution. On the restart Lilick jumped in front of the pack and set the pace for the balance of the 22-lap event. Hitzler held on for second followed by Dan Waisempacher, Eric Biehn and Bobby Gunther Walsh.
Saturday, September 12 will have the final NASCAR Track championship event pf the season being presented. Currently at the top of the leader board in the Modified division is ten-time champion Craig Von Dohren while former Sportsman champion Brian Hirthler leads the way in that class. The Hope Mortgage Team, which sponsors Sportsman drivers B.J. Joly and Lex Shive will present an extra $1,000 to the Modified and Sportsman feature winners. Both classes will have a Cash Dash, a Hard Charger and Hard Luck recipient with action set to get underway at 7:30 p.m. Adult admission is $15 while youngsters under 12 are admitted free.

WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Matt Bilodeau played a game of patience on Saturday, September 5, to earn his first win of the season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway and race his way into Sunday’s extravaganza. The Brandon, Vt., driver won a messy 40-lap race to take the “Win & You’re In!” guaranteed starting position in the Interstate All Battery Center Vermont 200. Bilodeau’s popular win highlighted a night that also saw Robert Bublak Jr., Josh Coonradt, Andrew FitzGerald, and Katrina Bean take feature wins.
Bilodeau survived a marathon feature race for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman division, which started off with a caution period before the first lap was completed. A seemingly endless barrage of 13 yellow flags slowed the race, drawing out the runtime to one hour and 14 minutes for 40 laps. Jeff White and Scott FitzGerald took turns leading the early laps before Austin Comes arrived.
Comes settled in front of the field for 15 laps, but Bilodeau was hot on his trail and made a nice move on the outside lane for the lead with six laps left. Bilodeau ran uncontested for the final circuits, and then – completely exhausted – celebrated in victory lane on the roof of his car. Bilodeau’s guaranteed starting spot for the Vermont 200 on Sunday will give him his second career start in the race.
Championship leader Johnny Bruno rebounded from two crashes to finish a tight second behind Bilodeau, while Comes slipped back to third. Larry Gallipo and Montgomery Tremont completed the top five ahead of Gary English, Mark Fewster, Mike McGinn, Alissa Cody, and Anthony Ryan. Bruno, White, and Lacey Hanson won qualifying heats with a field of 29 cars in action.
Robert Bublak Jr. won a well-driven, non-points special event for the Pepsi Sportsman Modified division, taking the 25-lap “Ron Casey Memorial” Non-Winners Shootout. The Ballston Spa, N.Y., veteran stalked early leader Derrick McGrew Jr. for the first dozen laps, then pounced at the second of three restarts to take the lead.
Bublak drove off into the sunset and scored his first win at Devil’s Bowl since July 19, 2009. Teenager Payton Talbot drove around the outside lane from his 10th starting position to finish as the runner-up in his first Devil’s Bowl appearance. Marty Kelly III was a strong third ahead of Tim LaDuc and McGrew. Jimmy Ryan was sixth, followed by Kevin Chaffee, Billy Lussier, Vince Quenneville, and Mike Fisher.
Heats were won by Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald, Walter Hammond, and Talbot, and Rob Maxon won the consolation race; the event drew 31 cars as a preliminary to Sunday’s 200-lap main event.
Josh Coonradt sealed up his first championship at Devil’s Bowl in the 25-lap Pro Stock/Super Stock feature. The West Milton, N.Y., racer drew the pole position for the start of the race and cruised to his third win in the four-race Pro Stock series. Coonradt led every circuit but was under pressure from Kim Duell the whole way; Duell finished second in both the race and the Pro Stock point standings, and Jay Fitzgerald was third in the race.
Andrew FitzGerald – no relation to Jay – crossed the finish line fourth overall and took the Super Stock win for his seventh of the year. Gary Silkey, in a Pro Stock, finished fifth overall. Josh LeClaire was sixth overall in a Super Stock, followed by fellow Super Stock drivers Matt Mosher, Josh Terry, Zach Sorrentino, and Ronnie Alger. Heats were won by Coonradt, Jim McKiernan, and Bill Duprey.
Katrina Bean was a popular first-time winner in the Mini Stock division, taking a 20-lap race with a field of 31 cars. Point leader Chris Conroy encountered mechanical problems while leading the race early, handing the top spot to rookie Griff Mahoney, who led through lap 13. Bean, of nearby Benson, Vt., drove hard on the outside lane to inch her way past Mahoney and lead the final seven circuits.
Jake Barrows made a late charge to finish just six feet short in the runner-up spot. Mahoney was third, followed by Brian Blake and Craig Kirby. The unofficial top 10 was completed in order by Josh LaPorte, Arty Heino, Jarrod Colburn, Chris Sumner, and Dick Stone. Sumner and Conroy won heats.
The Friend Construction 500cc Mini Spring division opened its two-day, two-segment feature with a 12-lap first leg. Rookie Troy Audet of Bridport, Vt., scored one segment point toward the overall tally with the win. Eleven-year-old Kaidin White finished second, followed by Austin Chaves, Samantha Mulready, and Kamden Duffy. The entire 12-car field will be inverted for the second segment on Sunday, and Audet will have to come from the back of the field in hopes of scoring the lowest combined total.
Qualifying for the Interstate All Battery Center Vermont 200 starts at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. The 200-lap main event is the biggest Sportsman Modified race in North America, paying $7,500 to the winner more than $5,500 in lap leader bonuses. The Sprint Cars of New England will also be in action along with the second segment for the 500cc Mini Sprints. Tickets are available online at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway website.

Fulper Flies To First New Egypt Victory; Housworth Hustles To Romano Memorial
NEW EGYPT, NJ - Milford, NJ’s JR Fulper picked up his first career New Egypt Speedway Modified victory on Saturday night as he held off Frank Cozze and a hard charging David VanHorn in the 30-lap main event.
“I’m so happy, when I was going to work this morning something told me that we would be here tonight. I can’t believe it. We were able to put everything together,” said Fulper post race.
Kory Fleming led the Vahlco Wheels Modified feature to the green flag and would lead the first five laps of the event before giving way to JR Fulper.
With Fulper out in front the man on the move in the early stages was Dakota Kessler racing up to second from his seventh place starting spot by lap eight.
The first yellow of the event flew on lap 11 when Eric Engstrom broke and veered into traffic, clipping Kessler severely damaging the right rear corner of his No. 449 and ending his promising night.
Fulper maintained the lead on the restart which saw Frank Cozze charge up to third from the sixth position.
The second and final caution of the event occurred on lap 12 when Ryan Krachun debuting a new Bicknell machine had trouble on the backstretch ending his event.
Fulper again shot out to the lead on the restart and this time brought Frank Cozze with him who had finally cleared Cale Ross for the runner-up position. David VanHorn entered the fray at the lap 17 mark as he was now on the charge up from his 13th starting position. At the five to go signal VanHorn had caught Cozze for second, finally getting past the No. 401 with two laps remaining.
While all of this was going on JR Fulper pulled out to over a second lead. Unfortunately for VanHorn’s sake he would run out of time as Fulper held him off for his first career Modified win.
VanHorn crossed the stripe in second with Frank Cozze third, 15th starting Billy Pauch Jr. in fourth and Davey Sammons fifth.
“We did a good job getting through lapped traffic, everything went good. We work so hard, we’re a small family team. I can’t believe we beat those guys,” said an elated Fulper in victory lane.
The Sportsman had their night in the spotlight on Saturday with the John Romano Memorial 30 lapper.
Marty Resnick used his pole position starting spot to jump out to the early lead but the caution would fly on the first lap when Matt Ellery and Joseph Brown tangled causing a pile up that also included John Scarpati and Bill Liedtka.
When green replaced yellow, Resnick continued to set the pace with John Criscione all over the back bumper of the No. 13. The second caution of the race flew when points leader David Burns spun in turns one and two.
Resnick held his ground out front before Criscione finally got the best of him on lap seven.
The caution flag came unfurled again on lap 17 for Joseph Brown who again was pointed backwards in turns three and four, this time after contact with Aaron Weaver.
Criscone would be back out front on the restart but it would be Jim Housworth leading lap 18 as he cleared Criscione for position.
The final yellow of the event flew when Jimmy Amato was found backwards in turns one and two.
Housworth continued to lead on the restart and went on to score the John Romano Memorial victory. Bob Lineman Jr. charged from his 10th place starting position to come home second with Criscione third, Burns rebounded from his spin to finish fourth and 2019 John Romano Memorial winner Will Dupree rounded out the top five.
Sammy Martz Jr. rocketed to the front of the Ice Less LLC Crate Modified main event from his 15th starting position for good on lap 15 as he took the lead from Robbie Holzwarth to pick up his second of the season at NES. Jim Housworth ran second followed by Dan Fleming, Anthony Tramontana Jr. and Vinny Troia.
Shannon Mongeau won his second Street Stock feature event of the season as he was chased by Bill Liedtka, point leader Brian Ludwig, Larry Reed and Joe Reid.
Amanda Buchel was the winner in the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman.
New Egypt Speedway will crown its 2020 Vahlco Wheels Modified champion this coming Saturday, September 12th on First Responders Night. Unofficially Danny Bouc leads Mike Butler by 18 points heading into Saturday’s point finale.
Also in competition on Saturday night will be the Larry’s Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars Presented By: The Meat Shoppe, Ice Less LLC Crate Modifieds, 4-Cylinders and the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman.
Pit Gates will open at 3pm, Grandstands at 4pm, with hot laps hitting the speedway at 5pm and the first green flag flying at 6pm. Adult (16+) admission will be $20, Seniors (65+) will be $18, Teens (12-15) & Military w/ID are $10 with Kids 11 & Under being FREE!.

McINTOSH THE LAST CORNER, LAST LAP HERO AT SWEET SPRINGS

Sweet Springs, Missouri (September 4, 2020).........In the moments leading up to the final lap, Cannon McIntosh figured a chance at victory was just out of the realm of possibility in Friday night's USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget feature at Missouri's Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex.
Yet, all it takes to win is to lead just one inch, a foot, a yard. A valiant effort by the 17-year-old Bixby, Okla. native saw McIntosh erase a late-race one-second lead held by Chris Windom as Windom dealt with a throng of traffic on the final lap. McIntosh ripped around the outside of turn four to nip Windom at the stripe by a half-car length for the victory - the only corner, the only lap McIntosh led throughout the evening.
"I thought when he got to traffic, I was too far out of reach," McIntosh admitted. "We got the white flag and I went into one as hard as I possibly could and kind of gained on him. He went to the bottom and followed the lapped car and I just sailed it off into three and four through the middle as hard as I could, and it was just enough to get him."
McIntosh's triumph was the second of his USAC National Midget career, and first outdoors, after winning his first contest 18 months earlier indoors at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin.
Moreover, since joining the Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports juggernaut at the beginning season, the team as a whole had yet to win a USAC race, last doing so with the series in July of 2019, 14 months ago. The victory made it three wins for the KKM team in three tries, keeping their winning tradition alive at the 1/6-mile dirt oval after previous victories with Logan Seavey in 2018 and Tanner Carrick in 2019.
"We've been winless all year with USAC, and I saw that stat today, and I was like, 'well, that's some pressure,'" McIntosh noted. "It motivated me to keep the streak going for the team. We were all wondering if we were going to get one this year. It's finally here, but I'm hoping that just opened the lid for a ton more to come. I've been striving as hard as I can to get that win and everyone on this team has been working hard to make that happen. Tonight, the cards finally laid into place."
Starting 13th in his Keith Kunz-Curb-Agajanian/TRD - Mobil1 - JBL Audio/Bullet By Spike/Speedway Toyota was McIntosh, who made his way into ninth on the opening lap, then gained one additional position per lap until reaching the top-five on lap five and the top-three on the seventh circuit.
However, in the midst of McIntosh's surge was a bit of mayhem, particularly on an opening lap tangle when contact on the back straightaway between Buddy Kofoid and Thomas Meseraull sent 6th starting Kofoid sideways in front of 9th starting Justin Grant. Grant dug in the nose and somersaulted twice before landing hard on the tail tank as Chris Windom drove underneath the airborne Grant. Meanwhile, Kofoid barrel-rolled three times after the contact. Both Grant and Kofoid were okay, but out of the race as a result.
Local talent, Clinton Boyles of Greenwood, Mo., led the opening lap from his outside front row position as he aimed to become the first Missouri-born winner with the USAC National Midgets since Steve Gennetten in 1989. Yet, reigning Sweet Springs winner Tanner Carrick rode the bottom past pole sitter Emerson Axsom and Carrick to lead the second lap.
On lap four, Boyles' bid for victory fell to the wayside as he slowed to a stop with mechanical trouble. He'd return to the lineup briefly but dropped out by lap eight after a turn four incident with Ethan Mitchell, ultimately finishing 21st.
Carrick led for much of the first half, displaying resiliency in holding off 7th starting Windom for many of those laps before Windom snagged the position with a turn one slider on the 17th lap. Carrick dropped back to 9th at the checkered but remained the only driver to lead laps and finish inside the top-ten during all three previous USAC National Midget features at Sweet Springs dating back to 2018.
The driver mimicking Windom's moves was McIntosh who repeated Windom's same turn one slider and turn three door close a lap later on the 18th go-around to slot into second and give chase to Windom.
Moments later, the second red flag of the feature occurred when series Rookie Chase Johnson, running 10th at the time, flipped at the entrance of turn three. He was okay.
From the restart onward, McIntosh's pursuit of Windom proved futile as Windom opened up his lead to over a second at the drop of a hat once racing resumed with a clear track ahead, running the cushion between turns one and two and on the bottom in turns three and four.
With five to go, McIntosh had managed to knock a tenth off Windom's one second lead, but time was running short. However, lapped traffic loomed, forcing Windom to have to untangle himself from a web in order to find victory for a fourth time with the series in 2020.
On the final lap, McIntosh quickly ate up the ground between he and Windom and was just three car lengths back in turn three when Windom went to the bottom at the entry to the third turn, slotting in between the cars of Mitchell and Cole Bodine running at the tail.
McIntosh staked his car in the middle groove, unfettered without any obstruction, and admitted that he was "pretty much swinging for the fences" at that moment, gassing his machine around Windom on the outside of turn four, beating Windom to the stripe to earn the victory over Windom, Tyler Courtney, Tanner Thorson and Thomas Meseraull.

What it takes to win is to be there in the end, and ultimately lead the most important lap, the final one, even it takes 29 and three-quarters of a lap to get there. That's what counts the most in the stat sheet and in the wallet.
"I was making a run there; I made mistakes down there in one and two, then he'd pull away, I'd get him back, then he'd pull away again," McIntosh remembered. "I didn't think there was going to be a chance; the bottom was the preferred line and he moved down there and got stuck. I didn't think the middle was going to hold me, but I think it threw enough (dirt) up there to where I could get enough momentum to get around him."
Windom gained three points to up his lead to 34 in his pursuit of the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship, finishing in the runner-up position in his Tucker-Boat Motorsports/NOS Energy Drink - Pristine Auction/Spike/Speedway Toyota. However, points were not of the utmost concern to the Canton, Ill. driver in the immediate moments following the race.
"I don't even think about points after leading the whole race like that and not getting the win," Windom admitted. "I felt like we were good the whole time. I got to lapped traffic there late and wasn't really sure where to go. I hadn't run the top in three and four the whole race. I kind of got forced up there and started missing my marks in one and two. I went to the bottom on the last corner to protect and he just ran a really good lap around the top and got by us clean there. There's not much to say other than he outran me in three and four. I just kept it low and too slow just thinking we had it wrapped up there, but obviously you never do until the end."

Tim Shaffer scores first All Star victory of 2020 during Attica Ambush opener
ATTICA, Ohio (September 4, 2020) - A name certainly synonymous with Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 competition, but left winless with the Series since February of 2019, the “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer proved to the open wheel world that he still has what it takes to be an All Star winner, breaking through during Attica Raceway Park’s Attica Ambush opener on Friday night for a $5,000 top prize.
Resulting in the 67th All Star Circuit of Champions victory of his illustrious career, the Aliquippa, Pennsylvania-native led all 40 circuits at the Attica short track to secure his trip to victory lane, withstanding early pressure from fellow sprint car veteran, Jac Haudenschild, before holding off Shane Stewart in the closing circuits. Shaffer is now an eight-time Series winner at Attica Raceway Park, officially tied with Frankie Kerr for second on the all-time Attica All Star win list.
“It’s been a while. I haven’t run with the Series steady, but we’re just out here building a team,” Tim Shaffer said in Attica Raceway Park victory lane, driver of the Canton Erectors, Grove Racing, No. 28 sprint car. “We can only run a limited schedule so we have to make it worthwhile when we do run. Hats off to my guys. Everybody has stepped up and here we are. These kids are getting harder and harder to beat.”
Inheriting a front row starting position after a false start by Cale Conley during the initial green, Shaffer drove on to gain the early advantage, leading Jac Haudenschild and Cale Conley by the flagstand for the first time. Searching around the speedway early, Shaffer found his rhythm within the first few circuits, eventually relying on the top of turns one and two and the bottom of turns three and four. Although in control the entire distance, traffic was never a factor for the former All Star Circuit of Champions titlist, as cautions on lap 10, 21 and 36 kept Shaffer in clean air.
Despite a few early attempts by Haudenschild to work by the Grove Racing No. 28, it was Bixby, Oklahoma’s Shane Stewart who challenged Shaffer late, putting himself in view of the lead after sneaking by the “Wild Child” at the exit of turn four on lap 18.
A caution on lap 36 for a troubled Cory Eliason, who was battling for a top-five spot at the time of the incident, gave Shane Stewart one final opportunity to gain the edge over Shaffer, but the “Steel City Outlaw” proved to be too strong with a clear track ahead.
“This is Attica,” Shaffer continued. “If you don’t move around, you’re going to get it handed to you. The track definitely changes throughout the night. I was hoping I was doing the right things.”
Stewart chased Shaffer to the final checkers, followed by Cale Thomas, Cale Conley and Paul McMahan. Although missing the top-five, Rico Abreu gained 16 positions to finish sixth.

SPORTSMAN AND MODIFIEDS RACING FOR BIG BUCKS, REALLY BIG BUCKS, IN 50TH ANNUAL FREEDOM 76 WEEKEND ACTION AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
SPORTSMAN RACE FOR $3,550 TO WIN IN FREEDOM 38 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH
MODIFIEDS RACE FOR $35,550 TO WIN IN 50TH ANNUAL FREEDOM 76 SATURDAY, SEPT. 19
BECHTELSVILLE, PA September 2, 2020 . . . The big news is out. Grandview Speedway is offering big bucks, really big bucks, for their Freedom 76 weekend of stock car racing coming up on September 18-19. The excitement is continuing to build for two big nights of auto racing action at the popular banked clay oval topped by the 50th Annual Freedom 76 Modified Classic that rewards the winner with $35,550 plus lap money on Saturday night. This race is expected to attract many of the top names in dirt track Modified racing.
The weekend kicks off with the action packed Freedom 38 for Sportsman stock cars paying the winner of the 38-lapper $3,550. This race is also expected to attract many visitors to test their skills.
Also on Friday night, action starting at 7:30 p.m., the Modified racers planning to participate in the Freedom 76 will be given practice time during the evening’s events.
Pits open at 3 p.m. and main grandstand gates open at 5:30 p.m.
Adult admission is $15 with youngsters 6 through 11 paying $5 and kids under 6 admitted free. Pit admission for Friday is $35 and there is no license required.
Tickets for the Freedom 76 will sell for $40. Youngsters, 6 through 11, on Saturday will pay $10 while kids under 6 are admitted free. Pit admission will be $45 with no license required. There are no advance tickets being offered.
Saturday will see pit gates open at 9 a.m. Ticket windows open at 3:00 p.m. Fans will be able to enter the speedway at the first turn and fourth turn spectator gates to reserve seats with blankets.
On track action will get started at 7 p.m. as top Modified racing talents participate in qualifying events, the $1,000 to win Kirsten Snyder Web Design & Photography Cash Dash, the Schaffer Racing Minuteman 20 and top it all off with the 50th edition of the Freedom 76, “The Granddaddy of Modified Stock Car Classics”.
A large amount of lap money will be divided amongst lap leaders during the big race and the racer gaining the most positions during the 76 laps will receive $500 from Bobby Gunther Walsh and his sponsors as the Hardcharger.
Bob Hilbert Sportswear will present a jacket to the winner of the Freedom 76.
Heading up the Modified action will a number of visiting talents along with others taking on last year’s winner Mike Gular, Grandview champion Duane Howard who is a five time winner, another five time winner Craig Von Dohren, Jeff Strunk (a seven time winner), former winner Ray Swinehart, John Willman, Doug Manmiller, Jared Umbenhauer, Brett Kressley, Kevin Hirthler, Bobby Gunther Walsh, Ryan Lilick, and so many more. And as always there will be a number of last minute surprise entries.
Rain date for the Freedom 76 is September 26th. There is no rain date for the Friday night events.

Those planning to camp at the track are reminded that move-in day is Thursday, September 17 and that campers must be removed from Speedway grounds no later than the day following the Freedom 76.
