Buffalino Best After Blewett Breaks In New Egypt Koczon Classic Thriller
NEW EGYPT, NJ - Morganville, NJ’s Dominick Buffalino scored one of the richest wins in his Dirt Modified career on Saturday night at the New Egypt Speedway in the inaugural Ron John Koczon Classic. The 77-lap Modified event held in memory of the former NES Modified campaigner who lost his battle with cancer in April was worth $7,700 to Buffalino. It was Buffalino’s second win of the 2020 season at New Egypt Speedway.
“I raced with Ron John, way back at East Windsor and everywhere, he was one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. He was a good guy to race with. There are some people you like to race with and there are some you don’t. He was definitely one of the guys you liked to race,” said Buffalino post race.
Sam Martz led the 26-car Modified field to the green flag and jumped out to lead the first five circuits of the 77-lap affair. After winning his heat race earlier in the night Jimmy Blewett would take the lead from Martz and set sail insearch of the Koczon Classic victory with Dominick Buffalino in tow, both utilizing Big Block power plants under the hood. Throughout the first stretch of the event it looked like Blewett and Buffalino were the class of the field with Mike Butler utilizing his spec-358 motor in the event entering the top three on lap 21.
Blewett would continue to lead the way through the first 23 laps when the first caution flew of the race for Lee Taylor Jr. who stopped the Moran No. 61m on the frontstretch.
On the restart, Blewett would continue to lead the way with Buffalino and Butler trying to chase him down and Ryan Krachun and Dakota Kessler entering the top five.
At lap 40 the second and final caution flew of the event for a fuel stop so that the teams utilizing Methanol had a chance to complete the duration of the event.
When the race restarted Blewett continued his dominance over Buffalino, Butler and Krachun with Davey Sammons now entering the top five as the race went on.
Over the last 20 laps, Blewett and Buffalino put on a show for the ages, battling it out for the lead lap after lap side by side all while weaving their way in and out of lapped traffic.
Unfortunately, disaster would strike for Blewett as he would break a fuel pump belt while leading with just three laps remaining, handing the lead and the win over to Buffalino. Mike Butler continued his stellar 2020 season at NES with a second place finish with Ryan Krachun, Davey Sammons and New York invader Mike Mahaney completing the top five.
“We knew we had something good. He (Blewett) had me, I don't know what broke. I was trying to stay with him. I think it was a little too close because when he broke, he got hit when he checked up. I feel bad for Jimmy, He was pretty good tonight. I hate to see him break but $7,700 is pretty good. I couldn’t do this without Todd (Neiheiser), he’s been in Florida since last September. I just wanna thank him for everything he does for me.” said Buffalino after the event. Buffalino ran his car so hard trying to catch Blewett it had started to overheat to the point he had to leave it running during Victory Lane ceremonies.
The Ice Less LLC Crate Modifieds were also on the program in a 27-lap main event paying $1,000 to the winner. Johnny Bangs took the lead from race long leader Justin Grosso on the last lap to score the victory. Grosso would have his best run to date in a Crate Modified finishing second with Ryan Simmons, Dan Fleming and Ryan Heim rounding out the top five.
Mike Fox won the 17-lap 4-Cylinder event that paid $500 to win.
The night was kicked off with a very special ceremony honoring “The New Egypt Nice Guy” Ron John Koczon, every driver in the pit area came out to the frontstretch to meet with members of the Koczon family including Ron John’s dad, Ron Koczon.
New Egypt Speedway is back in action this coming Saturday night August 2nd with the 2nd Annual Double Dip for the Vahlco Wheels Modifieds. The Modifieds will compete in Twin-20 lap feature events. The Larrys Hot Rods & Harley’s Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars presented by the Meat Shoppe, Sportsman, 4-Cylinders and Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman will complete the racing card. Adult (16+) admission will be $23, Seniors (65+) are $20 with Teens (12-15) & Military w/ID being $13 to get in with Kids 11 & Under being FREE! Pit gates will open at 4pm with the grandstands opening at 5pm. Hot laps will hit the Speedway at 6pm with the first race of the night firing off at 7pm.

DAKOTA DOMINANCE: Kyle Larson Wins At Red River Valley To Sweep North Dakota Weekend
Brad Sweet closes points gap and Jason Johnson Racing ties Shark Racing for team championship lead
WEST FARGO, ND — Aug. 22, 2020 — Kyle Larson had never raced at Red River Valley Speedway before this weekend. Never raced at River Cities Speedway. Never even raced in North Dakota.
In less than 24 hours, he picked up the win at both tracks – River Cities on Friday and Red River Valley on Saturday night – keeping fans at the edge of their seat both races.
Larson, of Elk Grove, CA, made a last corner pass on points leader Logan Schuchart Friday night to get the win and then had to hold off reigning champion Brad Sweet, Sheldon Haudenschild and Kerry Madsen to secure the win at Red River Valley.
“Once again, another great car,” Larson said. (Car owner and crew chief) Paul Silva gives me great stuff night in and night out to allow me to contend as often as we do. I couldn’t do it without him. I couldn’t do it without all of our supporters.”
Before the start of the 30-lap Feature, Haudenschild presented himself as the early favorite to run away with the win. From the pole in the six-lap DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash, the NOS Energy Drink driver rocketed to a more than four second lead ahead of Kyle Larson Racing driver Carson Macedo by the end of the Dash.
However, when the green flag dropped to commence the Feature, Macedo took advantage of the momentum built by running the top lane and launched ahead of Haudenschild down the backstretch.
While Macedo held command out front for the first 14 laps, Haudenschild, Larson and Sweet dueled for second behind him. Haudenschild tapped the front stretch wall with his right rear tire on the second lap, making an easy pass for Larson. Sweet passed Haudenschild three laps later and then soared around the top of the track to steal second from Larson two laps after that.
Larson didn’t let Sweet out of his sight, though. As the NAPA Auto Parts #49 car ran down Macedo, the Finley Farms #57 lurked behind him, waiting to strike.
Making the most of the bottom lane, Larson got a run underneath Sweet down the front stretch on Lap 13 and carried it into Turn 1 to not only move past Sweet but to power by the car he owns for the lead, as well. Sweet passed Macedo for second the next corner to setup another family feud with his brother-in-law for the win.
With 14 laps to go, Kevin Ingle spun off Turn 4, did a 360, and kept going with the two leaders entering the picture. His maneuver blocked Larson’s run down the front stretch and provided Sweet with an opening to dive under Larson going into Turn 1 and take the lead. However, Sweet’s rear end stepped out on the exit of Turn 2, not allowing him to mash the throttle as soon as he’d like. That provided Larson with the opportunity to drive back by.
Traffic continued to be an obstacle for the two drivers. With the top and bottom lanes occupied by slower cars, Larson and Sweet became more acquainted with the brake pedal every corner. Sweet did a better job of finding the openings around the lappers and got a run around the outside of Larson in Turn 1 to reclaim the lead with 11 laps to go.
The sole caution of the night came out with 10 laps to go, setting up a 10-lap brawl for the victory. Haudenschild was brought back into contend, along with Kerry Madsen, who had been on the charge from 10th.
Sweet got a solid launch on the restart, leaving Larson to fend off Haudenschild and Madsen. However, it only took a lap before Larson was back in his rhythm and hunting down “The Big Cat.” Knowing Larson had the bottom figured out, Sweet switch from the top lane to the bottom to block any potential runs by his brother-in-law.
When he went low, Larson went high. And it benefited Larson the most. While ripping the top through Turns 1 and 2 with seven laps to go, Larson blazed around the outside of Sweet. He reclaimed his crown as the leader and held on to it for the final six laps without any challenges to pick up the $10,000 check, his third World of Outlaws win in-a-row and ninth win with the Series this season.
“That was a fun race there,” Larson said. “Early, Brad was really really good. I though he was good all race. He could get the top going in (Turns) three and four really well. Anytime I go down to the bottom I’d see him blaze by me on the top. Then the caution came out and he’d seen me running the bottom a lot in (Turns) one and two. I figured I was going to have to get something going differently than him. I was able to get the top going in (Turns) one and two and able to get down the backstretch good.”
Sweet’s runner-up finished concluded a solid weekend for the defending champion, of Grass Valley, CA, who finished fifth the night before. He had dealt with bad luck the past few weeks but was able to gain points Saturday night and leaves North Dakota eight points behind leader Logan Schuchart – who finished 10th.
“Obviously, disappointed we finished second,” Sweet said. “I thought I had a better car through lap traffic. Being able to change lanes. Got the lead there with 10 to go and made a misjudgment on my end. I thought I needed to be on the bottom. I needed to react a little quicker to get to the top… Once he got around me, I was ready to change my line then. Just a split second too late.”
Haudenschild was able to hold off Madsen and round out the podium – his first podium and top-five in four races.
“I didn’t really get myself positioned too well there,” said Haudenschild, of Wooster, OH. “I got into the front stretch wall. A couple of guys got by me and had to do a little bit of work after that. But man, this NOS Energy Drink #17 was really good tonight.”
His performance helped bring him back within 100 points of the championship lead – now 92 points behind Schuchart.
Hometown favorite and 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz, of Fargo, ND, also made a small gain with his seventh-place run at Red River Valley. He is now 58 points behind Schucharts.
David Gravel, again, made big gains for Jason Johnson Racing in the team championship points. With his sixth-place finish at Red River Valley, JJR is tied with Schuchart’s Shark Racing team for the points lead with less than 20 races to go this season.

Aaron Reutzel snaps All Star win drought with convincing victory at Plymouth Speedway
PLYMOUTH, Ind. (August 22, 2020) - Scoring his first Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 triumph since Ohio Sprint Speedweek competition at Fremont Speedway on July 5, Clute, Texas’ Aaron Reutel marched his way back to All Star victory lane on Saturday night during a visit to Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana, doing so by commanding the final 32 laps of the 35-lap contest while fending off the likes of three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer, Tony Stewart.
The $5,000 triumph, his third in a row at the northern Indiana bullring, was accomplished from the outside of row one, first surviving a slide job battle with fellow front row starter, Hunter Schuerenberg, only to find himself in a constant mix of slower traffic for the remainder of the 35-lapper.
Despite Schuerenberg’s early attempts, and some hints of pressure from Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing, Reutzel maintained in control, now on top of the 2020 All Star championship points battle by 84 markers.
Tony Stewart held on to finish second at Plymouth Speedway, followed by Hunter Schuerenberg, a hard-charging Justin Peck, and Shane Stewart.
“That was the longest I’ve ever gone without winning in the last five or so years. Someone had to draw a map for me to even get down to victory lane,” an excited Aaron Reutzel stated, driver of the Folkens Brothers Trucking/Fischer Body Shop/Hollywood Blasting & Coating/Dissolvalloy/No. 87 sprint car. “We’ve had a lot of bad luck. Some of it was self inflicted, some of it not. It’s not from a lack of effort, I can sure tell you that. We try as hard as we can every single night and I think that’s why you see us get frustrated with each other because we are trying so hard."
Despite the initial four circuits consisting of a turn-to-turn battle with pole sitter Hunter Schuerenberg, actually exchanging the lead nearly every corner with Schuerenberg leading laps one and three and Reutzel leading laps two and four, the only other sense of pressure for Reutzel came in the form of Tony Stewart.
Stewart, who started fifth on the feature grid, powered his way to second on lap four, next setting his aim on the tailtank of Aaron Reutzel. The Columbus, Indiana-native kept pace with the two-time and defending All Star champion in traffic initially, but Reutzel’s stride eventually became too much to maintain. By lap 17, Reutzel was beginning to escape through the tail of the field, first utilizing a caution flag on lap ten to build momentum through clean air.
A caution on lap 29 would give Stewart one final chance to sneak by the familiar No. 87, but it was too late.
“Tonight we came in here with some confidence, especially since we haven’t lost here as an All Star,” Reutzel continued. “This is a track that really fits my driving style. It gets wide and the harder you run through the corners, the more speed you can make up. You don’t get that with a lot of tracks. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind racetrack and I really enjoy coming (Plymouth Speedway).”

The Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will continue their 2020 campaign with a four-pack in the Keystone State, set to visit Grandview Speedway, Williams Grove Speedway, Lincoln Speedway, and Bedford Speedway on Thursday through Sunday, August 27-30, respectively. Packing a punch, the Pennsylvania quadruple will award prestige and prize money, all of which kicking-off with a $5,000-to-win showcase at Grandview on Thursday. Action will continue with a pair of $4,000-to-win main events at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday, followed by the $7,300-to-win Kramer Williamson Klash at Lincoln on Saturday. The weekend will conclude with another $5,000-to-win headliner at Bedford on Sunday.

SANTOS' RESILIENCE NETS NIGHT BEFORE THE 500 WIN #2

Brownsburg, Indiana (August 22, 2020).........Bobby Santos admitted that it took him a minute to get reacclimated to midget racing Saturday night at Brownsburg, Indiana's Lucas Oil Raceway.
Yet, when was all said and done, there was no evidence of rust anywhere to be found as Santos stood up in his seat to celebrate his second career Night Before the 500 victory in the USAC non-points special midget event at the .686-mile paved oval.
The victory for Santos came aboard a car prepared by an all East Coast team, one that has a heritage of success at LOR, including two victories with Ken Schrader behind the wheel of the team's Silver Crown car in 1986 and 1989.
This particular evening belonged to Santos, however, as he led the first half of the 30-lap feature, lost the lead, then regained it with 11 laps remaining to secure the monumental victory in the Seymour-West/Indy Performance Composites - DTF Performance - Seaman Mechanical/Beast/Stanton SR-11x.
"These guys are awesome," Santos said of the Seymour-West team. "They put together an unbelievable racecar, Jeff West, IPC, Matt and Bobby Seymour. I drove for them years ago, and it's pretty awesome to get back into one of their racecars, 'The Spirit of Boston.' That means a lot to be driving the 29."
The Franklin, Mass. native's first Night Before the 500 Midget victory came 14 years ago in 2006, making it the longest duration between victories in the event, surpassing the 12 years that passed between Mel Kenyon's second and third victories in the event in 1965 and 1977.
The win marked Santos' ninth overall USAC-sanctioned victory at LOR, which ranks fourth all-time in that department. Interesting enough, the battle for victory came down between he and the only other past Night Before the 500 winner in the starting field for the midget feature, 2010 victor Tanner Swanson, who owns seven USAC victories of his own at LOR, including the previous night's Silver Crown 100-lapper.
Santos broke away from his outside front row starting position to nip pole sitter Kody Swanson at the line and lead the opening lap by a single car length over the eight-time LOR USAC winner who scored an Indy Pro 2000 Series triumph at the same track just one night prior.
Stretching his lead out to 12 car lengths early on, Santos began to be reeled in ever so slightly by the suddenly surging Tanner Swanson, who cropped Santos' advantage from 1.2 sec. to around six-tenths just prior to the lap 16 yellow for 18th running Nathan Byrd who spun and smacked the turn two wall with the left side of his machine. He was okay.
Continuing his sudden surge, Tanner, wheeling the most recent Night Before the 500 winning car driven to victory by Tracy Hines 2014, dove to the inside of turn one on the ensuing restart, sliding up in front of Santos as he drifted to the outside wall. Meanwhile, Santos cut back under to ride side-by-side with Tanner momentarily before Tanner bested Santos off turn two to secure the lead for the next four circuits while third-starting Californian, Courtney Crone, impressed by moving to third as Kody Swanson began to drop out of contention, and out of the race, with a cut left rear tire, finishing 18th.

However, on the 20th lap, Santos flexed his muscle with a resilient comeback that saw him throw his machine to the bottom of turn three under Tanner. The two rode wheel-to-wheel throughout the entirety of the long sweeping corners before Santos ultimately emerged with the race lead off turn four.
Kyle Hamilton made a furious challenge for second on Tanner in the waning laps, with Tanner clamping down to retain the runner-up spot while Santos distanced himself from the herd to snag the 1.382 sec. margin of victory over Tanner Swanson, Kyle Hamilton, Thomas Meseraull and 15-year-old NEMA regular, Jake Trainor. Crone, the 2016 USAC Western States Midget Rookie of the Year, fell back to sixth at race's end.
Utilizing a Stanton SR-11x engine from Hayward Motorsports and raced by Tanner Thorson on the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget trail, Santos added onto his LOR USAC win total with his second midget score to go along with four Silver Crown and three Sprint Car wins.
In the end, it was a complete team effort and the resiliency of Santos to get up, get knocked down, then get back up again two-thirds of the way into the event to earn a race win that both team and driver will forever covet.
"At the end of the race, my guys gave me a rock solid racecar; they gave me what I needed," Santos remarked. "We took off good at the start, but he obviously did a little better job than I did getting going. I just kept my cool and knew if I continued to roll the top, we could attack him again."

Danny Dietrich certainly knows his way around the always tricky Grandview Speedway one-third mile oval. In fact, Dietrich owns one Thunder on the Hill victory. Lucas Wolfe has been a long time contender on the hill but luck has never played to the advantage of Wolfe. There is no doubt, if Lucas Wolfe is in the line-up, he’s a contender for the win. Also looking for his first Thunder win is Anthony Macri. A rising star in the 410 sprint ranks and did set fast time in a previous Thunder on the Hill event.
Aaron Reutzel has won the last two All Star events at Grandview and leads the All Star points over Cory Eliason of Valisia, CA, Paul McMahan of Nashville, TN, Zeb Wise of Angola, IN, and Josh Baughman, Odessa, TX. Some well-known home town favorites looking to chase the $5,000 first prize include Freddie Rahmer, Ryan Taylor, Alan Krimes, Brandon Rahmer, Brock Zearfoss, JJ Grasso and Kyle Reinhardt to name a few.
The thrilling 358 NASCAR Modifieds are the charm of Grandview Speedway every Saturday night. They never disappoint the fans when they are on a Thunder on the Hill Racing Series event. Very few tracks present shows with two star-studded divisions. After a series of qualifying events, the Modifieds will battle in a 30 lap feature paying $3,000 to win. The talent-filled field is expected to include Craig VonDohren, Duane Howard, Jeff Strunk, Brett Kressley, Rick Laubach, Doug Manmiller, Jared Umbenhauer, Mike Gular, Colt Harris, Kevin Hirthler and Mike Lisowski.

KODY SWANSON REDEEMS WITH NIGHT BEFORE THE 500 SPRINT WIN

Brownsburg, Indiana (August 22, 2020).........Following a discouraging conclusion to a superb first half performance in Friday night's USAC Silver Crown event at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Ind., Kody Swanson and Nolen Racing were opted to claim a sense of redemption in Saturday night's Night Before the 500 USAC Sprint Car non-points special event.
Swanson, the Silver Crown point leader, led the first 40 laps of Friday's main event before a rear brake caliper failed on his car, relegating him out of contention for a win. Come Saturday, Swanson and the Nolen team weren't keen on having their winning plans thwarted once again, which they demonstrated by completing a night's sweep as fast qualifier and feature winner, leading all 40 laps in wire-to-wire fashion to claim the $10,000 top prize.
After Friday's whirlwind, the lost opportunity ate at Swanson, and he along with the Greenwood, Ind. based team weren't going to let opportunity slip through their fingers when they rolled their car onto LOR's pit lane bright and early on Saturday morning for the Sprint Car debut at the 70th Night Before the 500.
"It was actually pretty rough, I tell you," Swanson admitted of his two-race losing "'streak.'" Last night was actually tough because we put so much into the Silver Crown series and the effort there. We had one whale of a racecar last night."
Well, they had one whale of racecar on this night as well by any measure. Kody was Saturday's fastest qualifier in both the midget and sprint car divisions, which set him up for a spot on the pole in both of the night's features with the races lining up "straight up" based on qualifying time.
A win this past June at LOR in Must See Racing Sprint Car competition came with the team's trusty V6 engine. This time, the otherwise traditional V8 was under the hood of the Nolen Racing/KECO Coatings - Goodridge - K & N Filters/Beast/Tranter Chevy.
"It's the first time we've had this engine in this racecar," Swanson revealed. "We're a V6 team but we didn't know if we'd be able to hold everybody off here in a big race like this with it."
Right off the bat, the first lap spelled doom for eighth starting Nick Hamilton and fifth starting Ken Schrader, who was making his first Sprint Car start at LOR in his long, illustrious career. Both drivers and their cars wound up against the SAFER barrier in turn two, putting a sudden conclusion to each of their nights.
Early on, outside front row starter Aaron Pierce presented a steady challenge to Swanson as he kept pace to the inside of Swanson throughout the duration of the opening circuit. Swanson reached the start/finish line first at the end of lap one by a mere nose over Pierce, who promptly fell into line behind Swanson and gave chase to the five-time Silver Crown titlist.
Throughout the middle stages, Swanson's main culprit was the slew of traffic that lie ahead of him. As Swanson darted around and in-between the cars at the tail end of the lead lap, second-running Pierce inched his way closer to Swanson to within a couple car lengths away from the lead.
By lap 25, Swanson was in the clear as he ripped by the last remaining tail-end lead lap car, for the time being, that stood in his path to victory. Once clear, Swanson's field of vision only involved one car within his sight that shared the same straightaway as himself, providing him ample time to open his lead back up and distance himself from Pierce.
Kody Swanson and Nolen Racing completed a night's sweep as fast qualifier and feature winner, leading all 40 laps, wire-to-wire, to claim the $10,000 top prize.

It was easy-peasy from that point forward as Swanson was switching to glide to lead the remainder, and the entirety, of the feature event for his second LOR win in the past two nights, and third of the year. It was a more-than-welcome sight for the Kingsburg, Calif. native after the wrinkle that dogged the team the night before in the Silver Crown race.
"Today, they rallied and gave us a great sprint car," Swanson remarked. "I appreciate the effort of everyone that's a part of this Nolen Racing team. We do this in memory of Gene (Nolen), and I'm so thankful for his son, Greg, who's carrying the torch for us and doing a great job of running a race team. These guys are first class and I'm thankful to be racing for them."
Pierce finished 2nd to a Swanson for the second consecutive night at LOR. Friday night, it was Tanner, and on Saturday, the culprit was Kody keeping Pierce at Bay. Kyle Hamilton recorded a pair of third-place results on Saturday in both the midget and the sprint car feature. Tyler Roahrig (Mishawaka, Ind.) took 4th in the final tally while Tanner Swanson finished 5th on the heels of a Silver Crown victory the night before. Bobby Santos, meanwhile, scored a 6th after winning the Midget feature earlier in the evening.
