Aaron Reutzel outruns Kyle Larson in Red Dirt Raceway barn burner

MEEKER, Okla. (June 5, 2020) - Less than a week after getting edged-out by Austin McCarl in an epic battle at Park Jefferson International Speedway, Clute, Texas-native Aaron Reutzel redeemed himself and gave Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 fans something even more standing ovation-worthy, this time outdueling Kyle Larson in a slider slugfest during a first-ever Series appearance at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Oklahoma.

The victory, Reutzel’s fourth of the 2020 season and the 29th of his All Star career, not only awarded a $5000 top prize, but it officially opened the 2020 edition of Cometic Gasket Thunder Through The Plains presented by Hercules Tires. Kyle Larson chased Reutzel to the final checkers, followed by Cory Eliason, Justin Peck and Danny Dietrich.

“I just want to thank the Baughman family for giving me this opportunity and taking a chance on me to come out here and race. They trust me to come in here and do my job and it feels awesome to be able to put up results like this. Curt Fischer of Fischer Body Shop is with us tonight, so we’re glad to get it done for him,” said Aaron Reutzel, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/Fischer Body Shop/Folkens Brothers Trucking/No. 87 sprint car. “Dylan, Jim Bob and I just kinda do our thing and it works really well. We certainly wouldn’t be in this position without everyone who supports this team and believes in us.”

Lining up seventh on the feature grid by way of dash result, it did not take long for Reutzel to learn his way around the Meeker quarter-mile, eventually navigating his way to third with just three laps checked off the counter. At that point, Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson was the main event leader, utilizing the outside-pole position to snag the top spot before the completion of lap one. Danny Dietrich, who started third, raced between Larson and Reutzel.

After a pair of cautions on lap nine, followed by another set of yellow flags on lap 11, a long stretch of green flag action would ensue with the top three battling under a blanket. By lap 17, Reutzel was in position to take the runner-up spot away Dietrich, this time using a slider between turns three and four to steal the position away from the Gettysburg-native. Despite the position change, Reutzel, Larson and Dietrich continued to race all within just a few car-lengths of each other, soon faced with traffic for the first time on lap 22.

Lap 23 saw the evening’s first major takeover attempt, as Reutzel dived underneath Larson to take command through turns one and two. Larson returned the favor with a slider of his own through turns three and four, regaining control of the field as the pair drag raced toward the flagstand. Now forced to deal with a gaggle of slower cars, the battle between Larson and Reutzel would only intensify.

Maintaining momentum around the speedway’s outer edge, Reutzel powered by Larson to lead the next two circuits. Staying in hot pursuit, Larson quickly retook command from the two-time All Star champion with another slider in turns three and four.

From that point forward, it was an all-out brawl for the lead, racing nose-to-tail and side-by-side for the next ten circuits, exchanging slide jobs for the top spot nearly every trip around the speedway. Despite the persistence displayed by each driver, and accidental contact on more than one occasion, Larson remained in control until lap 36.

A final slider through turns three and four on lap 36 confirmed Reutzel’s visit to victory lane. Caution flags flew for the final time the following circuit setting up a four-lap sprint to the in clean air; Reutzel prevailed.

“We were racing each other so hard that we actually had a hard time getting through traffic. I was watching lapped cars drive away from us because we were running so hard,” an elated Aaron Reutzel continued. “Obviously, I was trying to pass him and get rid of him, but (Kyle Larson) is so good. You think you have him, but then he pulls something out of his hat. There were a few times where he thought he had me because he would leave the slider lane open. I’m not even sure what lap we started all of that on.”

“That was a lot of fun. Obviously, it would have been more fun to get the win,” Kyle Larson said, driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Finley Farms/No. 57 entry. “To have a dual like that with Aaron (Reutzel), for what felt like 15 to 20 laps, is awesome. We were a little bit off there in the feature and I think Aaron was a touch better than us. But we were still able to fight with him and do what we could to get the win. The fans definitely got their money’s worth tonight.”

FIGHTING CHANCE: Brad Sweet steals Beaver Dam win on final lap
The Kasey Kahne Racing driver earns his third win at Beaver Dam Raceway and third of 2020

BEAVER DAM, WI – June 5, 2020 – With 11 laps to go, reigning champion Brad Sweet couldn’t throw a stone far enough to reach leader Sheldon Haudenschild. The next lap, he could just about reach out and touch him.

A slip up in Turn 4 at Beaver Dam Raceway Friday night by Haudenschild allowed Sweet to grab hold and never let go. He went wherever the NOS Energy Drink #17 wasn’t, looking for an opening to victory.

He found it around the outside of Haudenschild with the white flag in the air. And once he found it, the reigning champion charged his way to his third World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win of 2020 and third at Beaver Dam Raceway – also his second in a row at the 1/3-mile track.

“I tried to drive it as hard as I could to get to him (Haudenschild),” said Sweet as he tried to catch his breath in Victory Lane. “It’s hard sometimes to know where to go in lap traffic. Hats off to the team. They had a really good race car tonight. But the NAPA Auto Parts guys keep digging. Last weekend was a tough weekend on us, but we still came out with two decent finishes. It’s nice to be back on top. That’s where this team belongs.”

Sweet showcased the poise of a champion last weekend at Lake Ozark Speedway after he got put into the wall and flipped. If there was any stress, he didn’t show it. He had to use a rare provisional to start the Feature and charged from 25th to eighth. The next night, he finished third. He and his Kasey Kahne Racing team carried that momentum into the doubleheader weekend at Beaver Dam.

The Grass Valley, CA driver won the first Team Drydene Heat Race of the night and then went on to start third in the 30-lap Feature.

Haudenschild took the lead on the first lap, leaving Shane Stewart in second and Sweet in third. His Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing car was in a different league than everyone else. Even with having to wrestle lap traffic, Haudenschild had about a straightaway lead by Lap 10.

Sweet moved by Stewart on Lap 11 for second and then looked to run down Haudenschild. His NAPA Auto Parts #49 cut into Haudenschild’s lead a little every lap but never enough to put him on a trajectory toward victory. That didn’t stop him from trying, though.

Haudenschild ran the bottom, making consistent and smooth laps. However, with 11 laps to go, he got sideways in Turn 4, almost coming to a stop. By the time to straightened out his car and made it to the front stretch, Sweet was on his bumper.

The two battled side by side in the closing laps until Sweet built a strong enough run to launch around the outside of Haudenschild off Turn 4 with the white flag in front of them. With another clean lap around the top of the track and a little help from a lap car blocking Haudenschild’s lane, Sweet drove away with the win.

“Sometimes we set these cars up to be fast for the last 10 laps and you have to try and maintain the first 10,” Sweet said. “We were probably a little too tight in the first 10, but it did come to life there. Never give up. I didn’t think for one second I wasn’t going to win. At least didn’t stop trying and settle for second. You never know what can happen in racing… Anyway, we’re happy to get the win and happy to be racing in front of fans.”

Haudenschild had to settle for a runner-up finish – his third top-five of the year – but was motivated by the car his team gave him.

“Ah, man, definitely a really good race car,” said Haudenschild, of Wooster, OH. “Kyle, Nicholas, Drew, they’ve been working their butts off to give me great race cars and getting me starting up front. Putting me in position to battle for these wins. I feel like I ran a good race. Just should have moved around a little bit.”

Rounding out the podium was current points leader Logan Schuchart, of Hanover, PA – his eighth top-five finish in nine starts this year (the most of all drivers). He now has a six-point lead over Sweet and a 30-point lead over third-place 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz, who finished fourth.

UP NEXT

Sweet will attempt to sweep the weekend and win three races in a row at Beaver Dam Raceway when the Series returns to the track on Sat., June 6 for the $10,000-to-win event. Tickets are sold out, but you can watch all of the action live on DIRTVision.

ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, June 5, 2020) - Fremont, Ohio's Stuart Brubaker ventured west a few weeks ago to race his 410 sprint car because Ohio's rules would not let tracks open. While he didn't bring home a victory, he did bring back knowledge to help him go faster. It paid off in a big way Friday, June 5 as Attica Raceway Park opened for the 2020 season to a packed pits but no fans. Brubaker, the track's 2018 champion, held off several challenges early from Caleb Griffith late in the race from Trey Jacobs to score his eighth career victory on Integrity Auto and Truck Sales Night.

"Lapped traffic was difficult. We had this thing full of fuel and it would get into the corner and dirty air and it wanted to shove across. I saw Caleb coming and I had to sit back up in the seat and work. I have to thank Chad and Ron and my girlfriend Teresa and Benji and all these guys and all my sponsors. We went out west and didn't have a bad showing but we definitely learned a lot on the car and came back here and applied that and here we are," said Brubaker beside his Dave Story Equipment, SRM Construction, KS Sales and Service, Pit Stop Convenience Stores, Gary Holland Trucking, Phillips Electric, Gressman Powersports, Speedways Bar and Grill backed #35.

It was "checkers or wreckers" for Logan Arntz in the late model feature. The Vestaburg, Mich. driver battled with former Attica champion Matt Irey the last half of the feature and the two were door to door coming to the checkers with Arntz claiming his first career track feature win by .049 seconds.

"I saw the number 36 behind me on the scoreboard on that second restart (with five laps to go) and I knew I would have my hands full. We don't get to race here much but I always enjoy the competition here. This is just awesome to get my first win at Attica," said Artnz beside his Nickerson Trucking, Jimmy Shock, Vic Hill Racing Engines, No Limit Karts and Parts, Accu Force Dynos and Testers, Fisk Trucking, Mid States Hydrolics and Equipment backed 21N.

Fremont Ohio's Seth Schneider avoided near disaster to score his first ever 305 sprint feature win at Attica, leading all 25 laps.

"We finally got the monkey off our backs. The track was difficult...you had to pick your line carefully. It about bit me in turn two and I had to adjust. Scott Gressman builds a hell of a motor and we switched to Mach 1 Chassis and it has made a world of difference," said Schneider beside his Commercial Glazing Systems, Professional Grooming, Patriot Pet Supply, Steam Solutions Carpet Cleaning, CA Kustoms, Slade Shocks backed #36.

Dylan Kingan and Brubaker brought the field to green for the 30 lap Callies Performance Center 410 Sprint A-main with Brubaker gaining the advantage over Griffith, Kingan, Ryan Ruhl and Buddy Kofoid. Brubaker quickly found the tail of the field by lap eight and Griffith pounced, sliding into the lead on lap nine with Brubaker returning the favor a lap later as the duo sliced through lapped cars. A caution on lap 11 gave Brubaker a clear track and he was able to pull away slightly as Griffith now had his hands full with eighth starter Trey Jacobs. Jacobs took the runner up spot on lap 15 just as lapped traffic would come into play again.

Another caution on lap 23 allowed Brubaker to maintain his slight advantage as he executed perfect restarts. With four laps to go Brubaker pulled away as Jacobs tried to hold off Griffith. The battle for second was swapped several times over the last four laps. Brubaker pulled away for the win over Jacobs, Griffith, Kofoid and Brandon Spithaler.

In the 25 lap Propane.com/Dirt Nerds Podcast Late Model feature, pole-sitter Mike Bores jumped into the early lead over Brett Bee, fifth starter Arntz and Eric Spangler. Bee went to the pits with issues on lap three, handing second to Arntz who immediately closed on Bores, grabbing the lead on lap five. By lap 11 the leaders were in heavy lapped traffic and Irey, who started ninth, quickly closed while Travis Stemler moved into fourth.

A rash of cautions with five laps to go bunched up the field. Irey was able to lead at the white flag by a nose only to see Arntz fight back and take the narrow win. Stemler, Doug Drown and Devin Shiels would round out the top five.

Schneider and defending track champion Jamie Miller brought the field to green for the 25 lap Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature. Schneider pulled away in the early laps as Miller had to battle Paul Weaver and Kyle Peters to maintain second. However, Weaver would soon retire to the pits as Schneider raced into lapped traffic by lap eight. Disaster nearly struck for Miller on lap 13 as he made heavy contact with infield tires but he was able to keep rolling.

A rash of race stoppages came at the half way mark, keeping Schneider in clean air. MIller's night came to a halt on lap 15 as he caught a rut and took a tumble. That moved Jimmy McGrath Jr. into second with a charging Steve Rando in third. Schneider was able to avoid issues and drove to an easy win over McGrath, Steve Rando, Peters and Luke Griffith.

It is not sure if Attica Raceway Park will abe in action on June 12 but fans are encouraged to keep an eye on the track's social media pages and at www.atticaracewaypark.com for developing news and information.
