Aaron Reutzel leads All Stars to Williams Grove Speedway victory lane for second time of 2019

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (September 20, 2019) - Less than a month after etching his name in Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 history books by becoming the first full-time Series regular to defeat the Pennsylvania Posse at Williams Grove Speedway, Clute, Texas-native Aaron Reutzel achieved the once-elusive feat yet again, this time during Tommy Hinnershitz Memorial competition on Friday night, September 20.

Ultimately a wire-to-wire performance by the defending All Star champion, the route to Williams Grove Speedway victory lane was far from plain sailing, as Reutzel was forced to withstand continuous pressure from Kasey Kahne Racing’s James McFadden, as well as a late charge by The Grove’s all-time win leader, Lance Dewease. Impressive enough, Reutzel’s victory bumps his All Star win total to an impressive 14 in 2019, simultaneously increasing his championship point lead to 98 markers over six-time champion, Dale Blaney.

Despite a last-ditch effort to drive around Reutzel during the final two circuits, Dewease was forced to settle for second, followed by Gio Scelzi, James McFadden and Brian Montieth.

“Hats off to this crew. This was one hell of a team effort,” an elated Aaron Reutzel said in victory lane, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/Folkens Brothers Trucking/Fischer Body Shop/No. 87 sprint car. “Twenty second laps around this place is really hard. We’ve been working at trying to get better in the slick. Tonight, we basically opened our Port Royal notebook and put that in our car. It was like magic again. Our format is nice because it gives us a chance to test. It’s nice to go out in the dash and try things.”

Launching to a convincing command right from the drop of the green, Aaron Reutzel led the first handful of circuits without a hiccup keeping McFadden, Dewease and Scelzi in check as the first eight circuits checked off the counter. Just as the lead cars were about to hit slower traffic for the first time, yellow flags appeared giving Reutzel the opportunity to start fresh in clean air.

When green flag action commenced, Reutzel returned to his familiar pace, once again relying on the cushion through turns one and two and the bottom groove through turns three and four. By the time the Texan found the back of the field on lap 18, McFadden and Dewease had found Reutzel, soon creating a three-car battle for the top spot.

Lap after lap, McFadden hounded Reutzel for the lead keeping the No. 87 within a car length through lap 27. In a desperate attempt to drive around Reutzel the following circuit, McFadden charged to the top of the corner at the entrance of turn three, hoping to use the cushion as a slingshot to drive around the All Star point leader. Unfortunately for McFadden, the move to the top proved costly, eventually resulting in a pair of lost spots to Dewease and Gio Scelzi.

Now with Reutzel in clear view, Dewease attempted to chase down the front-runner during the final two circuits. Although closing in to a half second, Dewease was out of time.

“I kept watching the scoreboard and I kept seeing McFadden in second,” Reutzel continued. “When Dewease got into second, I could kinda hear someone behind me. I wanted to try and run harder, but at the same time, I didn’t want to get caught up in any of the lapped cars.”

The Tommy Hinnershitz Memorial triumph earned Reutzel $6,000.

The sixth running of the prestigious Dirt Classic at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pennsylvania, will follow Williams Grove action on Saturday, September 21. Utilizing a unique format to help determine the evening’s outcome, complete with two rounds of heat race action, the 2019 Dirt Classic champion will leave with a $20,000 winner’s share, a monster portion of the $60,000+ purse that will be handed out at the conclusion of the evening's main event. Hot laps are set to fire off at 6:30 p.m., sharp.

Aaron Reutzel leads All Stars to victory during Jack Gunn Memorial at Williams Grove Speedway; Dewease gets redemption during second 20-lapper

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (August 23, 2019) - For the first time in Series history, the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 defeated the Pennsylvania Posse at Williams Grove Speedway, doing so in dramatic fashion during the first of two Jack Gunn Memorial, 20-lap main events on Friday night, August 23.

Aaron Reutzel, the defending All Star Circuit of Champions titleholder, as well as the current Series point leader and season win leader, led the charge from the pole position during the first 20-lapper at the world-famous half-mile, securing his place in Williams Grove Speedway history books by leading all 20 circuits, all while holding off the track’s all-time win leader and six-time champion, Lance Dewease. In addition, Reutzel’s $4,000 victory snapped a 35-race winless streak at The Grove for Tony Stewart’s All Stars, a stretch that dates back to 1970.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited for an All Star win,” an ecstatic Aaron Reutzel said in victory lane, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/Folkens Brothers Trucking/Fischer Body Shop/No. 87 sprint car. “I think this goes to show how tough it is here and how hard it is to win here. I said it yesterday - we beat the Posse at Grandview, but I don’t think you actually ‘beat the Posse’ until you do it at Williams Grove. It’s pretty special to come in here and do that.”

Despite starting from the pole position, it was a hard-fought 20 laps for the Clute, Texas-native, forced to battle wheel-to-wheel and wing-to-wing with Lance Dewease during much of the second-half of the main event. Things only intensified as lap traffic increased, and by the time the leaders hit halfway, the lapped cars were stacked two and three wide.

Although Dewease and Paul McMahan, who battled in the runner-up spot until Dewease drove by the Nashville-native on lap 11, kept tabs on Reutzel in traffic, it was not until lap 14 when Reutzel received his first threatening challenge.

Attempting to utilize a slider between turns one and two, Dewease did his best to take control over Reutzel, only to be denied by the defending champion a half-lap later at the exit of turn four.

Despite being out-drove during the first Jack Gunn Memorial main event at Williams Grove Speedway, it did not take long for Fayetteville’s Lance Dewease to find his way back to All Star Circuit of Champions victory lane, ultimately winning the second of two $4,000 paydays and bumping his Williams Grove Speedway win count to 97. Impressive enough, Dewease now owns 39 All Star victories, eight of which accomplished at the Cumberland County paperclip.

“We just keep plugging away with this race car,” Lance Dewease expressed, driver of the Don Kreitz, Jr.-owned/Schannauer Plumbing and Heating/Hess Iron/No. 69K sprint car. “The guys have been working hard since Knoxville. We weren’t too happy with how things ended out there, but we were pretty good all night tonight. I think I may have been a little too timid during the first feature, but I was able to be a little more aggressive during the second.”

By virtue of a six-position inversion draw, Lance Dewease started fifth on the second Jack Gunn Memorial main event grid. Although it took six circuits for Dewease to advance his first position, it was smooth sailing from that point forward. Just one circuit later, Dewease was able to drive by Adam Wilt for third, next setting aim on Ryan Smith and race-long leader, Kyle Moody.

By lap 12, Dewease was all over Smith for second, eventually taking the spot before the pair got back to the flagstand. It would only take Dewease two more laps to solidify his place at the top of the running order, the result of a massive dive into corner number three to get by Moody on lap 14.

“That’s my favorite corner around this place,” Lance Dewease said about turn three and four. “We can do that stuff pretty good when we are right.”

Ryan Smith drove by Moody to steal second before the final checkers, followed by Moody, Adam Wilt and Chad Trout.

Fans should note that the Jack Gunn Memorial will be aired on MAVTV Motorsports Network on October 20.

The ‘Fabulous’ Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pennsylvania, will have their fair share of All Star competition on Saturday evening, August 24. Similar to their visit to Grandview two nights prior, the All Stars will chase a $5,000 winner’s share in the Pigeon Hills.

Lincoln Speedway will open pit gates at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 24. Action will commence with a mandatory drivers meeting at 6 p.m., followed by hot laps at 6:45 p.m., sharp. Those seeking additional information should visit Lincoln Speedway live on the Web at www.lincolnspeedway.com.

Winner Donny Schatz (Christina Signor Photo)

20/20 at the Grove: Donny Schatz earns 20th Williams Grove victory, $20K payday
Schatz leads Outlaws top-five to claim his seventh win of the season

MECHANICSBURG, PA – July 27, 2019 – Closing in on 300 wins in his World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series career, the feeling of celebrating in Victory Lane is never lost on Donny Schatz.

However, it was starting to feel that way at Williams Grove Speedway.

The 19-time winner at the speedway had not found victory there since May of 2015. He came close to securing his 20th win several times, including earlier in the year when he finished second to Lance Dewease and Friday night’s Summer Nationals opener where he finished third.

Both times, parked on the front stretch with the rest of the podium cars, he could see Victory Lane. See the confetti shooting into the sky. And see the trophy being delivered to someone other than him.

That changed Saturday night. In the seat of his Toco Warranty No. 15 car, Schatz was pushed past where the third-place car would sit, past the runner-up spot and into Victory Lane at Williams Grove for the 20th time, claiming the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals and the $20,000 payday attached to it.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been standing out here getting the trophy and the flag,” Schatz said. “Hats off to this whole Tony Stewart Racing team. They’ve been digging.”

The reigning champion from Fargo, N.D. was fast all night, but never showed a dominate hand. He qualified fourth. Then won his Drydene Heat race and went on to finished third in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash to winner Sheldon Haudenschild and runner-up Brad Sweet.

Neither Sweet or Haudenschild had ever won a World of Outlaws Feature at Williams Grove Speedway. Experience was on the 10-time Series champion’s side.

When the race went green, Sweet launched to the lead ahead of Haudenschild, but before the action went any further the red flag was thrown for Shane Stewart, who flipped down the front stretch. Stewart’s crew, along with help from others, got the car repaired in time for him to reenter the race before it went back green.

Once it did, Sweet, again, charged into turn one looking to take the lead from Haudenschild, but the young Wooster, Ohio driver was ready for Sweet this time. Haudenschild stayed side-by-side with the NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 car into turn one but got crossed up at the center of the turn, allowing Sweet to charge by the NOS Energy Drink No. 17 car.

The next corner, Schatz dove underneath Haudenschild and cleared him off turn four to take second-place. A few laps later Haudenschild powered to the inside of Schatz entering turn one, but the veteran driver had the better run on the high side of the track. He kept Haudenschild at bay and began his trek toward Sweet.

The Kasey Kahne Racing driver had already pulled away to about a four-car length lead, while riding the high side. Schatz chose the same line. It began to work in his favor.

Seven laps into the 30-lap Feature, with lap cars in sight, Schatz closed to Sweet’s bumper. A lap later, running the middle of the track, Schatz was able to hammer the throttle quicker than Sweet off turn two and sped by him down the back stretch for the lead.

Sweet wasn’t ready to let a Williams Grove victory and $20,000 slip through his fingers, though. He threw a daring slide job at Schatz through turns three and four, leaving inches between their bumper when he slid in front of him exiting turn four.

He couldn’t keep the momentum going off the corner, though. Schatz powered back underneath Sweet down the front stretch, and using a lap car as a pick, drove by him for the lead into turn one. Not long after, Haudenschild worked his way around Sweet for second, as well.

“Felt like I didn’t drive a great race in lap traffic there,” Sweet said. “Just needed to do a little bit better of a job. That’s what wins or loses these races. You’ve got to move around and get by the lap cars.”

The battle was now between Schatz and Haudenschild. Schatz raced around the bottom line, while Haudenschild powered around the outside. That put him at Schatz’s bumper with 10 laps to go.

The same scenario occurred at Cedar Lake Speedway, where Schatz rode the bottom and Haudenschild rocketed around the high side of the track and passed the Series champion for the win.

This time, though, Schatz did what he failed to do at Cedar Lake. He moved his line to the high side of turns one and two, stopping any large run by Haudenschild around the top. Doing so also gave him a good enough run off the corner to extend his lead over Haudenschild.

“Trying to figure out how to pass here is big,” Haudenschild said. “I followed Donny around there for a lot of laps. He don’t make any mistakes. He’s difficult to get around.”

Haudenschild attempted a slide job into turn one to close back on Schatz, but it back fired. He slid up the track and lost grip off the corner, allowing Schatz to further pull away and cruise to the win.

“I had to move around the race track,” Schatz said. “There were laps where I felt like I could roll the bottom and the middle better, and laps where I felt like I had to hustle the top.

"Sheldon is really good when it comes to the cushion like that. It’s tricky. And he’s only getting better. The bad part is he’s way young. There’s going to come a time when he’s going to make me obsolete. But not today.”

Behind Schatz, Haudenschild finished second with Sweet third, Daryn Pittman fourth and David Gravel fifth – shutting out the PA Posse from the top-five at the Mechanicsburg, Pa. track.

With Sweet finishing third, Schatz also closed the points gap between them to eight points.

The Summer Nationals win was Schatz’s seventh Series victory of the year and 290th career win overall.

Victory Lane at Williams Grove Speedway was no longer a distant vision. He saw the confetti and saw the trophy being handed to him once again.

“It’s been a long time since standing here (in Victory Lane at Williams Grove Speedway), but I remember what it feels like now,” Schatz said.

Winner Tim Shaffer (Christina Signor Photo)

NEW GROOVE: Tim Shaffer wins at Williams Grove Speedway
Pennsylvania-native Shaffer holds off late race attack by David Gravel to claim second World of Outlaws win this year

Crew members from the Roth Motorsports team jumped into Tim Shaffer’s trailer and scurried to the sweat drenched driver.

With his arms out and a smile just as wide, Shaffer embraced the two crew members and thanked them for helping him get back on track.

The Aliquippa, Pa.-native had just left Victory Lane at Williams Grove Speedway for the second time in his World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series career – first time since 2001. The win was also his second Series victory of the year – the first was at Las Vegas in February.

“They’re hard to get,” Shaffer said about winning in general. “This place is really special. I hadn’t realized how long it had been since I won here. It goes back to a great car, great engine, great team. It’s funny, we struggled this year. We started good, struggled mid-season and it seems like we’re coming back to life.”

What the Roth Motorsports crew did to help Shaffer had nothing to do with car set up, the engine or tires. They simply helped him have fun again.

“Basically, they’ve been hanging out at my house and having fun,” Shaffer said. “Running go-karts and just having fun again. It’s neat to have friends like that. They enjoy racing and love it as much as you do and get to have fun with other things instead of being around racing all of the time, and we had a blast.

“You kind of loosen up. We came here already in a good mood, having fun, and it’s carrying on.”

That showed in Shaffer’s performance throughout the night. He finished second to Brad Sweet in his Drydene Heat race but tested Sweet for the lead in the early stage of the eight-lap race. Shaffer then went on the win the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash from the pole and the Feature, leading all 25 laps.

However, Watertown, Conn.-native David Gravel – who was coming off a win at Lernerville Speedway and eight top-five finishes in a row, with seven of them being podium finishes – did not let Shaffer cruise to the victory.

In the early stage of the Feature, Shaffer powered around the high side of the track with a blistering pace that left about a straightaway distance between he and second-place Freddie Rahmer. His pace also put him in lap traffic by Lap five on the half-mile speedway.

Rahmer held on to second-place for the first 11 laps before 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz dove underneath the PA Posse member in turn three and powered by him off turn four. The next corner, Gravel charged around the outside of Rahmer and stole third-place.

Gravel worked on Schatz’s bumper for the next few laps until the caution came out for Daryn Pittman having a flat right front tire.

The group of 25 cars lined back up two-by-two for the restart. Shaffer crept the field around turns three and four before mashing the throttle and launching back to the lead down the front stretch. Behind him Schatz and Gravel raced side-by-side through turns one and two – Gravel low, Schatz high. The high side had been the fastest way around all night, but Gravel made the bottom work and darted to second off the corner.

The track widened as the race progressed. Shaffer stayed high, testing the limits of the cushion. Gravel, however, was perfecting the bottom line. The Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 car worked its way to within striking distance of Shaffer and waited for an opportunity to pounce.

There were no mistakes, though. Shaffer was smooth around the top and aggressive with laps cars. If there was an opening, he threw his Rudzik Excavating No. 49x into the gap without hesitation. There was no time to be cautious. Gravel was coming, and he knew it.

“I seen the board that the 41 got by [Schatz] on that yellow,” Shaffer said. “I said ‘Oh, he’s hunting me down.’ I was just trying to make good laps and I knew we’d be hard to beat.”

With Shaffer not making any mistakes, Gravel knew he had to do something drastic if he wanted another Williams Grove victory.

Coming to the white flag, Gravel rocketed his car underneath Shaffer into turn three – closing about a four-car length gap. The momentum slid his car up the track and he went side-by-side with Shaffer, about a foot a part, through turn four. Shaffer held his line – and his eyes closed, he said jokingly. That hindered Gravel’s charge and forced him to fall in line behind the orange and black No. 49x.

“I was close, I didn’t see him there for a second,” Gravel said. “I obviously just gave him a little bit of room to get back by me. If it was twenty or fifty grand (to win) I probably would have slid up here. But it was a good night. We were fast all night long. I feel like we were the only car to run on the bottom of the race track.”

Shaffer pulled away with the lead and the $8,000 win at the opening night of the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals doubleheader – his 27th career Series victory.

With Schatz – second in points – finishing third and Series points leader Brad Sweet finishing seventh, Gravel bested the top two in points for the second straight night and continues to inch his way into the championship battle. He is now 102 points behind Sweet and 88 points behind Schatz.

The reigning champion has also closed the gap to Sweet, now 14 points behind him.

Shaffer isn’t running for points. He’s racing to have fun. He’ll have even more fun if he can get back-to-back wins at Williams Grove Speedway and collect Saturday’s $20,000 winnings. But for now, with the support of fellow racers and friends, he’s just relishing in what he does.

“It’s just about enjoying it,” Shaffer said. “I’ve been doing this for 36 years. That’s why I don’t run a grueling schedule. I run my own grueling schedule. If I want to take a weekend off and go boating, I’m going to do it. But this is what I’ve done my whole life and I’m really enjoying it.”

TITLE MATCH AT THE GROVE
Lance Dewease out duels Donny Schatz for the Morgan Cup at Williams Grove Speedway

The battle for the Morgan Cup at Williams Grove Speedway Saturday night turned into the title match of the century between the World of Outlaws and PA Posse.

One the front row of the 30-lap World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Feature, representing the World of Outlaws was 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz and next to him, on the pole, representing the PA Posse was Lance Dewease – whose won more races than anyone at Williams Grove.

Dewease added another win to that list Saturday night, defeating Schatz to claim the Morgan Cup and his 17th career World of Outlaws victory. The Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing driver didn’t make it an easy fight, though.

Schatz got the first punch, jumping to the lead at the start of the race. From there, Schatz set a pace the No. 69K couldn’t match.

Dewease contributed that to his setup, stating it takes five or six laps for his car to get going. Because of that, he said he anticipated Schatz would get the jump on him. He knew the race he needed to run.

“The pace we were trying to run, we were going to be hard on tires at that whole 30 laps,” Dewease said about Schatz’s early run. “But hell, I wasn’t too easy with them.”

Schatz’s early lead didn’t last long, though. On Lap two, Logan Schuchart stopped on the front stretch due to an ignition box issue. The caution allowed the two front runners a quick rest to gauge their early run.

When the green flag flew again, Schatz landed another jab, jumping back to the lead. Dewease kept pace with him, though.

“I was shocked how good I hung with him there on the bottom,” Dewease said. “I thought we’d be alright if I could get by him (Schatz). He knows how to get around here when it’s slick.”

Like Dewease predicted, once he got in six consecutive laps, his car took off. While Schatz rode the high side, Dewease found enough grip on the bottom to wear out Schatz’s lead. By that time the two leaders entered lap traffic, which proved to be an advantage for Dewease.

Schatz struggled to navigate around lap traffic, allowing Dewease to plant the attack he needed on Lap 17 to charge by the No. 15 car and take the lead.

“It just came down to getting through lap traffic,” Schatz said. “I got to the 70 car and I didn’t push the issue, to go across the race car and go in front of him and I didn’t do it. It got me in a funk for a few laps and Lance got by. I got myself back going, but it was too late.”

Dewease then cruised to his second win in four days, after winning Wednesday’s night race at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa. That night he heard the chant, “Posse! Posse! Posse!” in Victory Lane. Then heard it again Saturday night as the PA Posse fans were jubilant to retain the iconic Morgan Cup.

“This rivalry is pretty intense,” Dewease said. “It goes back a long way. We’re some of the few areas that can consistently win against these (Outlaws) guys. We were very fortunate to get it done tonight and keep the cup for another year. Beating Donny is always special because he gets around this place so good.”

While Schatz accepted his defeat, having to settle for second, he laid down a further challenge for the PA Posse fans.

“I hear all of that Posse chant, and I love that,” Schatz said. “Come August, I’m pretty sure he’s (Dewease) going to win the money to go to the Knoxville Nationals, so there’s going to be no damn reason every person in this place isn’t at the Knoxville Nationals watching it.”

While Schatz and Dewease put on a show at the front of the field, California-native Giovanni Scelzi was the show of the race behind them.

Scelzi won the C-Main, transferring to the rear of the 12-car Last Chance Showdown. He then made his way to fourth in the Showdown, transferring to the rear of the Feature. After starting 24th, he charged his way to a seventh-place finish in the Feature, earning the KSE Hard Charger award.

“Just qualified bad, and when you do that it puts you behind the eight-ball,” Scelzi said. “We just kept trucking in the Feature and kept going and going and going. I wish we had a yellow. I think we had something to get back in the top-five.”

Scelzi won his first Series victory at Williams Grove last year, becoming the youngest ever World of Outlaws winner at 16 years old. However, he’s not sure why he meshes with the Pennsylvania track so well.

“I just seem to have some natural speed,” Scelzi said, “I don’t know where it comes from. Seems to be a place I’m comfortable at.”

Both Schatz and Dewease – who credited each other as being exceptional drivers – said they’ve found the set up their comfortable with, leading to another potential title match when the Series returns to Williams Grove Speedway in July.

David Gravel rides low line to Morgan Cup first round win

MECHANICSBURG, PA – May 17, 2019 – A simple point of the finger by Jason Sides gave David Gravel the assistance he needed to go on and win his third World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series race this season.

Gravel lost the lead to Daryn Pittman at the start of the 25-lap Williams Grove Speedway Feature and 10 laps later lost second to Pennsylvanian Danny Dietrich. It looked like Gravel may have to settle for his second third-place finish in-a-row, but everything changed with 13 laps to go.

Dietrich and Gravel were nose to tail heading down the front stretch with the lap car of Sides in front of them.

“Going into (turn) one, Sides pointed low and I think Dietrich thought he pointed low like he was going to go low and Dietrich was going to go high, but he actually pointed low to pass him down low,” Gravel said. “Dietrich followed him in the corner, and I went low. So, I’m glad it worked out for me and not for him.”

That move allowed Gravel to slide back into second-place, while Dietrich fell several car lengths behind him after having to lift out of the throttle due to Sides blocking his line. Dietrich cited getting caught behind Sides was the one mistake that kept him from a potential win Friday night.

“That was the race I think for me,” Dietrich said.

With Dietrich far behind, Gravel had breathing room to try and run Pittman back down. And he didn’t waste any time. Two laps after passing Dietrich, he was on Pittman’s bumper. Gravel stuck to the low line most of the race, while Pittman stayed high. But with 12 laps to go, the two swapped lanes in turns three and four. The advantage went to Gravel.

On Pittman’s tail, he dove underneath the No. 83 Roth Motorsports car in turn one and charged his way back to the lead.

After the disappointment of losing a potential win at Lincoln Speedway Wednesday night, Gravel was not going to let another win slip through his fingers.

He prepared himself for the Feature throughout the night, studying how his car worked in different lanes. While he won his Drydene Heat race and the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash by riding the high line, he tested the bottom during the Dash.

“I was just trying it (different lines) out all night,” Gravel said. “Luckily things worked out the way they did, and I found something better than they did.”

Once he cleared Pittman and began to pull away with the lead, Dietrich wasn’t letting him out of his sight. The blue No. 48 also got by Pittman and made his own charge for the lead. At times a blanket could be thrown over the top three.

Dietrich continued to run the high side, while Gravel stayed low. At times he would close on the No. 41 Jason Johnson Racing car, but Gravel could always out power him out of the turn, leading to his 42nd career World of Outlaws victory – and fifth Series win at Williams Grove Speedway.

The ability of the No. 41 car to drive hard through the turn without any issues has Pittman scratching his head on how he can get his car to do the same.

“We didn’t get from the center off very good,” Pittman said. “My car would drop too far and not drive down the straightaway. I think the 41 drivers really hard, a lot harder than mine and we’ve got to figure out why that is. I just start spinning way too easy.”

Gravel and his new Jason Johnson Racing team have found the level of consistency they were hoping to find at the start of the year. He’s finished in the top-five in the last four races – three of those finishes being on the podium. And with three wins now, Gravel is the winningest driver, so far, this season.

“Man, we’re trying all sorts of stuff,” Gravel said. “Every night I don’t think we run the same bar combination. Philip (Dietz, JJR crew chief) is always working, trying to make the car better. It works nine times out of 10. Hopefully we jot down the things that work really well and continue to grow as a team and keep winning races.”

His Williams Grove win has propelled the Watertown, Conn.-native to be tied for third in the Series’ points standings with Pittman – 64 points behind leader Donny Schatz, who only has a two-point lead over Brad Sweet.

With three wins in the early stage of the season, the championship isn’t on Gravel’s mind, yet. He’s focused on staying consistent and winning races.

“The past couple of races have been really good,” Gravel said. “We’re qualifying well consistently now, which is a huge part of this. If we keep that up good things will happen. Where we end up in the points is where we end up. I just want to keep winning races and try to be as consistent as we can.”

A simple point of the finger to the sky in Victory Lane Friday night made that clear.

In an effort to advance the sport of sprint car racing, constituents from across the country representing sanctioning bodies, tracks, car owners, chassis builders and drivers have announced the formation of a sprint car council. It is believed to be the first of its kind in the sprint car industry.

The intent and purpose of the council is to improve communication among all constituents in the sprint car industry. The council will work together, focusing on car and track safety initiatives, improving consistency in rules, maintaining costs, enforcing suspensions across all tracks and series, and advancing the holistic improvement of sprint car racing for drivers, team owners, series, tracks and fans.

The council will not act as a governing body. The decision to adjust rules, adapt safety measures, enforce suspensions or otherwise will ultimately be decided at the respective series, track and car owner level.

“Many people in the industry are aware that we had a vision and goal to assemble a council when we met in August during the Knoxville Nationals,” said Tony Stewart, who represents the All Star Circuit of Champions as a series owner. “I am extremely excited about the enthusiasm and participation from our members. This is a great opportunity for all of us to improve sprint car racing for years to come.”

The council will represent individuals from tracks and series representing all geographical areas of the United States. Such individuals will actively participate in sub-councils which will focus on the following disciplines: track safety, car/chassis safety, aerodynamics and forward-looking rules changes.

“Since 1978, the World of Outlaws has been a leader in sprint car racing, and we are pleased to expand on that role with the sprint car council,” said World of Outlaws CEO Brian Carter. “Going back 10 years with our stakeholders group, the World of Outlaws has strived to bring the industry closer and to strengthen the foundation of sprint car racing while keeping an eye toward the future. We hope through the sprint car council all the parties can learn from each other to continue enhancing the sport we all love.”

The council will meet four times per year, at a minimum, with to-be-determined dates in February, August, November and December.

Participating members of the council include: All Star Circuit of Champions, American Sprint Car Series (ASCS), Attica Raceway Park, BAPS Motor Speedway, Barry Jackson (crew chief CJB Motorsports and chassis builder), Daryn Pittman (driver), Empire Super Sprints (ESS), IRA Sprints, Jackson Motorplex, John Darby (consultant), Kevin Nouse (PA 358 Sprints), Knoxville Raceway, Lincoln (PA) Speedway, Mark Chevalier (team owner and engineer), Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA), National Sprint League (NSL), Ryan Hand (former crew chief), Paul McMahan (driver), Port Royal Speedway, POWRi, POWRi WAR Sprint Car League, Skagit Speedway, Upper Midwest Sprint Series (UMSS), United States Auto Club (USAC), WI MSA 360 sprints, World Of Outlaws and Williams Grove Speedway.
