ARDC COMPETITORS PREPARE FOR CHILI BOWL COMPETITON

Area Will Be Well Represented in Tulsa, OK

As final preparations are completed and trailers are being loaded, all eyes turn to Tulsa, OK for what is frequently referred to as 'the Super Bowl' of midget racing as the 29th Annual Chili Bowl gets underway on Monday, January 12th.

The American Racing Drivers Club will be well represented in the 2015 Chili Bowl competition as fifteen drivers with ties to the organization have registered to compete in this year's event - certainly the largest presence ARDC has ever had in Tulsa. The delegation of ARDC competitors represents a broad cross section of the organization - from rookies to seasoned veterans.

John Heydenreich who hails from Bloomsburg, PA was the winner of the 1990 Chili Bowl and is a former ARDC competitor, ranking ninth on the ARDC All Time Feature Winners List. Heydenreich last competed with ARDC during the 2013 season. While the entries have reached record levels for the 2015 event, Heydenreich maintains that the competition has always been tough in Tulsa. "It's all about preparation and opportunity," Heydenreich states. "You've got to get your elbows up and be ready to take advantage of whatever opportunities come your way."

Collegeville, PA driver, Alex Bright knows all about those opportunities. Bright qualified for last year's Chili Bowl by finishing 3rd in the A Main on his qualifying night while racing for his grandfather, Joe Hemler in his Lightcap Electric #77. Racing the same car that he used in ARDC competition, Bright battled with Christopher Bell and Kevin Swindell right down to the wire in last year's event to finish fourth. This year, Bright will have a Mike Heffner owned midget at the Chili Bowl, with Sean Michael turning the wrenches. A second Heffner entry will be piloted by 8 time URC Sprint Car Champion, Curt Michael who will make his first Chili Bowl appearance.

The "Royersford Rocket", Steve Buckwalter has raced in five Chili Bowl main events. Buckwalter's best finish to date has been a ninth in the Saturday night main event along with a third place finish on his qualifying night.

Now making his home in Berks County, Danny Stratton joined the ranks of ARDC competitors this season as the driver of the Jerry & Karen Steward owned #33. Stratton has raced midgets throughout the country and boasts a fourth place finish in the 2012 Chili Bowl as his best performance to date. Stratton will field a second Andy Bondio entry at this year's Chili Bowl, joining team mate, Tim McCreadie - the winner of the 2006 event.

2014 ARDC Champion, Reading, PA driver, Steven Drevicki leads a host of ARDC competitors who return to completion in Tulsa this year. Drevicki carries the momentum to Tulsa that took him to the top of the ARDC competitors this season. Drevicki and DeGre Engineering Race Team took everything they learned the season before and rolled it into a championship season. Brenden Bright chased Drevicki throughout the season and travels to Tulsa on the heels of one of his most successful seasons in midget competition after finishing second in points. Milford, NJ driver, Nick Wean returns to Chili Bowl competition this year and looks to improve upon his 11th place finish on his qualifying night. After finishing 8th in points on the ARDC schedule, PJ Gargiulo of Morton, PA heads west and hopes to make his first A Main on his qualifying night. Shawn Jackson of Bear, DE will debut his new Elite Chassis, Esslinger powered #7 in Tulsa this week. Jackson was the first driver from the First State of Delaware to compete at the Chili Bowl. Tyler Brehm returns to compete in a second Steve Buckwalter entry. Brehm raced in Tulsa last year after only taking a few practice laps in a midget before the Chili Bowl. In 2014, Brehm raced the Jim Jackson owned #97 in ARDC competition and his headed to Tulsa with a lot more seat time and experience under his belt.

Drivers, Ryan Greth and Jim Radney, are hoping that they can convert what knowledge they gained while competing in the Tulsa Shootout just ten days before the start of the Chili Bowl as they head to Tulsa with their Hyper Racing midgets for their second Chili Bowl experience.

In addition to Curt Michael who makes his first Chili Bowl appearance, 2014 ARDC rookie, Tommy Kunsman of Northampton, PA will be behind the wheel of a second Rick Wean owned entry. Kunsman has been a spectator in Tulsa for the last eight years and looks forward to seeing the event from the other side of the fence. Jamie Spears of New Holland, PA will also make his Chili Bowl debut. Both rides - Kunsman's ride in the Wean #78 Spike chassis and Spear's #74 Stealth - are up for sale and looking for new owners to take possession in Tulsa!

First things first as qualifying gets underway on Tuesday night. Everyone's goal is to make the A Main on qualifying night. Qualifying takes place Tuesday through Friday with final qualifying all day Saturday before the main event.

Follow all the Chili Bowl news and ARDC results on Facebook. There will be live updates throughout the competition with daily results posted on our web site at www.ardcmidget.com.

ALEX BRIGHT IS NOMINATED BY EMPA

Bright Is Nominee for John Blewett III Young Gun Award

As Collegeville, PA driver, Alex Bright prepared to head to the 'land down under' he received word that he is one of five nominees for the John Blewett III Young Gun Award presented annually by the Eastern Motorsports Press Association (EMPA).

Bright, who races a midget with the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) has received recognition on both a national and international level during the past year.

Bright came to ARDC in 2010 as the driver of his grandfather's, Joe Hemler, Lightcap Electric #77. The new team picked up their first win the following season and have been a threat ever since.

Last January, Bright and Hemler drew national attention when Alex wheeled the #77 to a podium finish on his qualifying night for the 2014 Chili Bowl. His third place finish placed Bright in the redraw for what is often referred to as the Super Bowl of Midget racing on Saturday night. After dropping back in the early going, Bright fought his way back to battle with Christopher Bell and Kevin Swindell in the closing laps of the Chili Bowl. While Bryan Clauson raced to the checkered, Bright raced to a fourth place finish. After five days of competition and nearly three hundred competitors, Bright raced the same car that he uses in ARDC competition to achieve one of the highest finishes ever by an ARDC driver in the main event in Tulsa.

Just one year ago, Bright garnered international headlines when he captured the Magic Man 34 while racing on the Speed Car circuit in Australia. The Magic Man 34 is one of the most coveted races in Australia as it pays tribute to former Speed Car competitor, Mike Figliomeni. Bright and four time Magic Man 34 winner, Davey Ray, exchanged the lead back and forth and had the fans in the Perth Motorplex on their feet until Ray was finally sidelined seven laps from the checkered. Bright went on to take the win - certainly one of the biggest of his career.

Bright returned to Australia just a week ago to prepare to race a brand new entry for car owner, Graham Jones.

"I was really surprised to be selected as a nominee for this award," Bright related. "I had a lot of bad luck this year (motor issues) but at the same time, I made all the races I did finish count!" Bright finished fourth in the ARDC points chase for the 2014 season, collecting 5 wins, including three consecutive wins during July and August. Bright collected ten podium finishes in fifteen scheduled events.

The winner of the John Blewett III Young Gun award will be decided by members of EMPA and will be honored at the annual EMPA Convention weekend in Valley Forge on January 2-4, 2015.

BRENDEN BRIGHT CAPTURES FIRST GRANDVIEW WIN
Bright Wins First of 2014 in Exciting Grandview ARDC Feature

Brenden Bright drove to his first win of the season with the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) in the twenty-five lap feature event at the Grandview Speedway in a rare Friday night racing event.

Not only was it Bright's first win of the season but his first ever win at the Grandview Speedway - the track that is the closest to Bright's Collegeville, PA home. "We've always struggled at Grandview," Bright related. "We've been good this season on the heavy tracks or early in the night but we've struggled on the hard slick tracks."

On this race night, Bright had some help. His Presidential HVAC #92 got some help from five time ARDC winner, Alex Bright and his crew chief, Eddie Heffline who made some suggestions to improve the younger Bright's performance. He had some help from his brother in the feature line-up as well. When Alex drew the pole after winning the third heat race, he volunteered to start 12th for the twenty-five lap main - the last of the redraw positions. That moved Brenden up to a third place start. "I need all the help I can get," Brenden stated as he looked over the starting grid.

Brett Wanner and Billy Pauch Jr. led the field to the green flag but Wanner fought for control as the rear wheel came off his #44 as the field headed into turn one. The inside row slid up for the complete restart, pitting Brenden Bright against Pauch Jr. on the front row. Pauch immediately took the lead as Brett Arndt slid under Brenden Bright to briefly take second.

Pauch had the Mike Heffner owned #27 on the bottom of the track as Brenden Bright and second year driver, Jim Radney battled for the runner-up spot. Radney like the high line around the track and took over second on lap four. Pauch led Radney, Brenden Bright, Tim Buckwalter and Brett Arndt with five complete.

Alex Bright had advanced to sixth but slid high and lost several positions. By lap seven, Radney was putting the pressure on Pauch for the lead. Radney ran the top with Pauch on the bottom as the two dueled for the top spot.

The field was three wide through turns one and two following a caution for Alex Bright just before half way.

Radney took a run on the outside of Pauch as the two drivers raced down the backstretch on lap thirteen with Radney becoming the race leader at the half way point. With ten laps to go, Radney led Pauch, Tim Buckwalter, Brenden Bright and Ryan Watt who was behind the wheel of the R/T Racing #20.

Moisture on the race track caused a tangle between Alex Bright and Bruce Buckwalter Jr. in turns one and two, bringing out what would be the race's final caution. While the field circled under caution, race leader, Jim Radney came to a stop on the homestretch with battery failure. Radney's bid for a first ARDC win would be postponed for another night. Pauch led the field back to the green flag for the final ten laps as the race leader.

Brenden Bright wasted no time taking his car to the outside to challenge Pauch for the lead on the back stretch. The race had a new leader as Brenden Bright led the way.

Watt challenged Tim Buckwalter and took over third with five laps to go. 2013 ARDC Champion, Trevor Kobylarz and Brett Arndt battled it out for fifth.

At the end of twenty-five laps, Brenden Bright headed for his first checkered flag of the season followed by Billy Pauch, Jr., Ryan Watt, Tim Buckwalter and Trevor Kobylarz.

This Friday night, ARDC heads west to race at the Path Valley Speedway Park - a return to the Central PA track after an absence of nearly twenty years.

RACE NOTES:
Billy Pauch Jr. made his first start of the season in Mike Heffner's #27 midget, wrenched by Sean Michael. Ryan Watt subbed for Carey Becker and drove Becker's #20 to a third place finish. When electrical issues sidelined point leader, Steven Drevicki's #19. DeGre Engineering car owner, Greg Fitzpatrick turned over his #28 to Drevicki for the night. The point leader raced his way to an eighth place finish at the end of twenty-five laps. Danny Stratton had the Steward #33 out in front of the first heat before rear end problems brought Stratton to a stop in turn four. Fast time of the night turned by Ryan Watt in the first qualifier when Watt turned the third mile track in 15.128 seconds.

Feature Finish (25 laps)
1. Brenden Bright 2. Billy Pauch Jr. 3. Ryan Watt 4. Tim Buckwalter 5. Trevor Kobylarz 6. Brett Arndt 7. Ryan Greth 8. Steven Drevicki 9. Kyle Lick 10. Tyler Brehm 11. Tony DiMattia 12. Bechtelsville, PA August 31, 2014 . . . Early day rain and the forecast of more rain to come has forced promoter Bruce Rogers to throw in the towel and cancel the doubleheader show of ARDC wingless midgets and Hilborn TSRS winged sprint cars scheduled for Grandview Speedway on Sunday night.

This event will kick off the big Freedom 76 Classic weekend that will include the $25,000 to win Modified race on Saturday, September 13th featuring many of the top dirt track modified racers.

"If you only go to one race this weekend the ARDC / TSRS show at Gransview this Sunday is the show not to miss. They put on a great show. You will not be disappointed. Check out the video of the closing laps of the TSRS feature the last time they were at Grandview; and the ARDC feature is always worth the price of admission." .... WheelsofSpeed

FINAL OPEN WHEEL SPECTACULAR OF THE 2014 SEASON SET FOR GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY SUNDAY

BECHTELSVILLE, PA August 25, 2014 . . . The third and final Open Wheel Spectacular of the season is on tap at the Grandview Speedway this Sunday evening as the Hilborn Tri-State Race Saver Sprint Cars (TSRS) and the wingless midgets of the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) return to the high banks of the Grandview Speedway for another double header of open cockpit competition.

Only one driver - Adam Carberry of Bensalem, PA - has been able to claim repeat wins in TSRS action this season. Carberry was the race winner of the first Open Wheel Spectacular in June and recently picked up his second win of 2014 at the Bridgeport Speedway. Karl Freyer, Mike Haggenbottom, Kyle Reinhardt, Dave Brown, Kyle Purks and the winner of the July Open Wheel Spectacular, Jeff Geiges - are all looking to make a return trip to Victory Lane. Carberry raced Tim Tanner for the win in June. Geiges won a three way battle when he took the lead from Haggenbottom with two laps to go. Purks, Haggenbottom and Geiges swapped the positions throughout the final six laps in a race that came right down to the checkered flag at the end of twenty-five laps.

Steve Buckwalter has won both of the ARDC Midget Sunday night feature events. However, it has been the Collegeville, PA driver, "The Phenom" Alex Bright who has been on a streak in recent ARDC action. Bright leads the midget field with five wins, including wins in four of the last five ARDC events. Steve Buckwalter has three wins while Steven Drevicki continues to lead the points in ARDC action with his pair of wins. PJ Gargiulo and Tim Buckwalter each have one win a piece this season.

Both feature events promise twenty-five laps of open wheel action from the green to the checkered and feature the top performers from a series of qualifying events for both divisions of competition.

Fans will have a chance to meet with several competitors before the racing action gets underway on Sunday. The team from Low, Down and Dirty internet radio will present a Meet & Greet to begin at five o'clock near the entrance to the grandstand. Eddie Wagnner and his #70 and Stephanie Stevens and her #20 will be on hand to represent TSRS while 2013 ARDC Champion, Trevor Kobylarz and the R/T Racing #1 and Danny Stratton with the Steward #33 will be on hand to represent ARDC. These drivers will pose for pictures, sign autographs and be available to answer questions before they head back to the pits to prepare for the night's racing action.

Racing will get the green flag at 7:30 p.m. Adult admission is just $15 while youngsters 6 through 12 pay $5 and kids under 6 are admitted free.

It's the night before the Labor Day Holiday and a great time to come out and experience the action that everyone is talking about - the Open Wheel Spectacular at the Grandview Speedway.

Filling out the Labor Day weekend at Grandview is the Saturday night tripleheader sponsored by Bernheisel Racing Components and will see the BRC Late Models run in a special 30-lap feature with more than $5,000 worth of special products being shared by all Late Model racers that carry the BRC decals on both sides of the car. The NASCAR 358 Modifieds and Sportsman will also be in action. Just two point events remain in the season before the huge Freedom 76 Classic takes place on Saturday, September 13 and that one pays $25,000 to win and features the best dirt track modified racing talents in the area.

The Saturday night action gets the green at 7:30 p.m. with adults admitted for just $15 while youngsters 12 and under are admitted free.

Additional information on racing at Grandview is available at 610.754.7688 or check in at www.grandviewspeedway.com and Facebook.

STEVE BUCKWALTER AND JEFF GEIGES WIN OPEN WHEEL SPECTACULAR FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY ON SUNDAY NIGHT

BECHTELSVILLE, PA July 21, 2014. . . The results of the second Open Wheel Spectacular at Grandview Speedway have been written in the record books. While that chapter may be closed, it is not likely that the talk about this racing event will end any time soon.

Race fans saw Steve Buckwalter set a blistering pace on his way to his second consecutive win in American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) action on the high banks of the Grandview Speedway Sunday night. The Tri-State Race Savers (TSRS) Sprint Car feature saw three different leaders during the final six laps with multiple lead changes on several laps before Jeff Geiges took command and the win.

Current ARDC point leader, Steven Drevicki and Alex Bright led the field of wingless midgets to the green flag with Bright using the outside line to take the lead on lap one. Bright ran and hid from the field as he extended his lead lap after lap. Bright was already reeling in the back of the field by lap eight as Drevicki, Brenden Bright, Tim Buckwalter and Ryan Watt raced in the top five.

But disaster would strike for the young Collegeville, PA driver on lap eleven. Bright was preparing to negotiate his way through lapped traffic when contact was made between the Lightcap Electric #77 and the car driven by Eric Heydenreich. Bright took a wild ride in turn two before coming to rest on the inside of the track. Bright exited the car uninjured but his bid for his third ARDC win of the season ended before the half way mark.

Drevicki took the lead on the restart as Brenden Bright and Tim Buckwalter battled for second in front of Watt. Tim Buckwalter took over second when the pair raced through turn three. Steve Buckwalter slid into third before the half way mark. After a two lap battle with Tim Buckwalter, Steve Buckwalter moved up to second. The caution waved for Tyler Brehm who sat on the infield just off of turn four.

Drevicki now had Steve Buckwalter on his back bumper for the single file restart. Drevicki led through lap fifteen but Buckwalter took the lead for good on the next go round.

Drevicki held off Tim Buckwalter's challenges to finish second. Brenden Bright followed S. Buckwalter, Drevicki and T. Buckwalter across the finish line with Kyle Lick completing the top five at the checkered.

Jeff Geiges passes Mike Haggenbottom for the win (WoS photo)

Kyle Purks and Rick Stief paced the field of TSRS Sprint Cars to the green flag with Purks quickly exerting his muscle to take the lead.

A red flag brought the racing to a half on the first lap as Scott Frack made hard contact with the wall coming out of turn two before going over. Frack escaped injury but his race ended prematurely on this night. Adam Carberry, the feature winner in the first Sunday night Open Wheel Spectacular, exited the race as a result of wing damage incurred in the same incident. Tim Tanner, who was the TSRS point leader coming into this race, exited under the lap one stop with motor issues.

Purks went into the lead on the complete restart and caught the rear of the field on lap six. Even with lapped traffic to hinder his progress, Purks continued to pull away. With ten laps complete, Jeff Gieges ran in second and began to close the gap on Purks while two time TSRS Champion, Mike Haggenbottom raced in third.

Stef Palmai drew a caution when she ran into problems with seventeen laps complete, setting up a single file restart with just eight laps left to run.

Purks had Geiges, Haggenbottom, Tom Carberry Jr. and Ryan Stillwaggon lined up nose to tail right behind him as he led the field back to green flag racing.

And then things got interesting. Purks led lap eighteen as Geiges took a look to the inside. Haggenbottom took his car to the outside, passed Geiges for second and then took the lead from Purks to lead lap nineteen. Purks came right back to take the lead as the field exited turn two. Haggenbottom was back in front as he and Purks crossed the line on the next lap but the lead changed hands around the speedway. Haggenbottom was scored as the race leader on laps twenty-one through lap twenty-three when Jeff Geiges overtook Purks for second and then passed Haggenbottom for the lead. Haggenbottom fought back and regained the lead momentarily before Geiges took the lead and led the way to the checkered flag.

It was Geiges for the win followed by Haggenbottom, T. Carberry, Purks and Brennflect.

The third Open Wheel Spectacular of the season is set for Sunday, August 31st again featuring the TSRS Sprints and ARDC Midgets. Racing will start at 7:30 p.m.

This Saturday, July 26th, 7:30 p.m. Atlas Paving Corporation of Wayne, NJ will sponsor the night which will feature the Pepsi-Bashore Challenge One-on-One Modified Challenge races along with a full card of NASCAR 358 Modifieds, BRC Late Models and Sportsman stock cars.
