REBOUND RAGER: Sheldon Haudenschild Overcomes Flat Tire To Win at Huset’s
Brad Sweet extends his points lead over Logan Schuchart after wild Huset’s Speedway return

BRANDON, SD — Sept. 5, 2020 — Sheldon Haudenschild did what few have ever accomplished.

He passed Kyle Larson for the lead and drove away, putting himself on a trajectory to his fourth World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win of the season Saturday night at Huset’s Speedway.

However, with nine laps to go, his apparent victory vanished with a pop. His right rear tire let go, forcing him to get it replaced and restart 14th with nine laps left.

To his advantage, multiple other drivers suffered the same fate. Those who had yet to blow a tire knew there was a potential inevitability of it occurring on the rubbered track and tried to treat what tread they had left with care. Haudenschild no longer had to. With a fresh right rear Hoosier eager to clutch dirt, Haudenschild could run twice as hard as the cars ahead of him.

Between drivers losing tires and Haudenschild able to pass cars like he had double the horsepower, the NOS Energy Drink #17 was back on Larson’s bumper in four laps. He had a car capable of passing the Finley Farms #57 yet again, however, Larson was forced to make the pass easy on Haudenschild when he blew a tire himself.

With the lead back in his possession, Haudenschild would never relinquish it again. On the final lap, the smoke show put on by his right rear through the final turn became a display of celebration as Haudenschild claimed his fourth win of the year and this first at Huset’s Speedway.

“I knew to just go around the outside of them (the cars ahead) once I had a fresh tire on, and do it before the 2 (car of Carson Macedo) and the 83 (car of Daryn Pittman) because they were both fresh, too,” said Haudenschild, of Wooster, OH. “Just tried to get in front of them early and also save and try to make some passes there and hope you get the lap in. I don’t know how many times we probably all three passed a bunch of cars and then the lap came back (because of a caution coming out).

“Man, I can’t give it up enough for this NOS Energy Drink team. They’ve been working their asses off. They never give up and tonight was a perfect example of that.”

Larson entered the race looking for a redeeming win of his own. The last time he was at Huset’s this year, he flipped and destroyed the car he’d dominated the year with. The Silva Motorsports team unloaded as good as they ever have with Larson, setting the quickest time in Hot Laps, setting Quick Time in Qualifying and winning their Drydene Heat Race.

Jacob Allen stepped up to the plate in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash against Larson, though. He started on the pole but lost the lead to Larson on the first lap. Unwilling to let the white #57 drive away and claim another win, Allen muscled his way back by Larson to reclaim the lead the next lap. It was then his turn to drive away with the Dash win – placing him on the pole for the 35-lap Feature.

When the first World of Outlaws Feature in four years at Huset’s Speedway commenced, Larson launched around the outside of Allen to claim the lead on the first lap. Haudenschild used the top lane to his advantage, as well, powering around the outside of Allen through Turns 1 and 2 and taking second before they reached Turn 3.

Larson then became the game of Haudenschild’s hunt. His #57 car being lose off each corner didn’t help his chances. Five laps into the Feature, his car was nearly at a 90-degree angle off Turn 2. He managed to steer the car back straight and hold Haudenschild behind him. However, three laps later, Haudenschild slid to the outside of Larson in Turn 1 and then rocketed by him for the lead off Turn 2.

The race was in Haudenschild’s hand for about the next 20 laps, holding a more than two second lead over Larson. The attention was on the battle for second. Larson held it, but Allen worked him every lap with Kerry Madsen close behind, waiting for someone to slip up.

While none of the drivers slipped, signs of their tires failing came to light with 13 laps to go. Daryn Pittman – running in the top-five – was the first to blow a tire. A few laps later, Haudenschild suffered his tire failure, along with Carson Macedo.

Those three became the new class of the field once a new Hoosier sneaker adorned their right rear. They charged their way through the field with Haudenschild leading the pack.

Once Haudenschild brought the battle back to Larson, who was about coasting through the turns to save his tires, Macedo entered the fight, as well. He kept himself within striking distance as Haudenschild and Larson waged war. When Larson’s tire finally gave out and Haudenschild had to throw his car sideways in Turn 4 to avoid hitting him, Macedo pounced and darted by Haudenschild to take the lead. However, the caution came out before the lap was completed, putting Macedo back behind Haudenschild on the restart.

The race resumed for the final time with five laps to go. Haudenschild did what few have ever accomplished. He successfully rebounded from suffering a flat tire to go from the lead, to the rear and back to the lead, claiming the $10,000 top prize.

Macedo finished in the runner-up spot for the second week in a row and earned the KSE Hard Charger Award after starting the race in 14th.

“Unfortunate there, that last time Kyle blew a tire and I got under Sheldon and got to the line, but it wasn’t quite enough,” said Macedo, of Lemoore, CA. “They threw the yellow before that and it ended up reverting back to the last lap and ended up running second. Hats off to Sheldon and his team. Congrats on the win. We just got to do a better job throughout the night. Put ourselves in better positions to start up front in these Feature races.”

Pittman rounded out the podium – his first podium finish since mid-July.

“I don’t know how we ended up back here,” said Pittman, of Owasso, OK, with a smirk. “The truth is I don’t think I could have ran any harder anyway because we were a lap away, at most, from popping our second tire. Sometimes that’s just the way it goes. We’ll take this third.”

All five drivers in the top five in points blew a tire at some point during the race. Current points leader Brad Sweet managed to get back to fourth. Logan Schuchart, who is six points behind Sweet in second, finished seventh and 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz, who is now 74 points behind Sweet in third, finished sixth.

Haudenschild has moved up to fourth in points – 80 behind Sweet – and Macedo is fifth – 82 behind Sweet.

With one more round at Huset’s Speedway left, Haudenschild will again look to do what few have ever accomplished.

Rico Abreu scores $10,000 in Attica Ambush finale at Attica Raceway Park

ATTICA, Ohio (September 5, 2020) - It did not come easy, but St. Helena, California’s Rico Abreu left the home of “Ohio’s Finest Racing” on Saturday evening as an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 winner, scoring the Attica Ambush finale at Attica Raceway Park for a $10,000 payday. Abreu, who started second on the feature grid, led the final 27 circuits to nail down the five-figure winner’s share, but was forced to fend off the likes of Trey Jacobs and Aaron Reutzel along the way.

His first since cashing in for $5,000 at Muskingum County Speedway in July, Abreu is now a two-time All Star winner in 2020, bumping his career total to nine in the process.

Two-time and defending Series champion, Aaron Reutzel, finished second in the Ambush finale, followed by Cap Henry, Ian Madsen and Trey Jacobs.

“That’s an intense 40 laps here,” an elated Rico Abreu said in victory lane, driver of the Rico Abreu/Curb Agajanian Racing/Abreu Vineyards/Curb Records/Lucas Oil Products/Whistle Stop Bar and Grill/Self Made Racing/Salty’s BBQ/Dancer Logistics/J. Davidson Scrap Metals/Wiser Golf/ShopRico.com/No. 24 sprint car. “You really have to be patient and know that your car is going to keep coming to you. Wow, what a crowd. This is great for Attica.”

Although starting from the outside-pole position, it was polesitter and Wooster, Ohio-native Trey Jacobs who earned the initial jump, driving away from Abreu and Cale Thomas to lead the first circuit. A caution on lap two would freeze the running order the first time giving Abreu a second chance at snagging command. The ensuing restart would prove to do Abreu a favor, ultimately utilizing his momentum to sneak up on Jacobs and capture the lead by lap five.

Despite Abreu’s attempts in maintaining a quick pace around the outer edge of the speedway, it was Jacobs who kept his focus on the bottom and eventually tracked down the leader, first losing a drag race on the frontstretch before regaining control officially on lap 12. A caution on lap 13 would pause the race yet again giving Abreu another chance to restart on the tailtank of Jacobs. As displayed before, Abreu took advantage of the restart and worked up enough momentum to slingshot around Jacobs on lap 14.

In the meantime, Aaron Reutzel was on the move, powering his way to third from sixth by lap 15 before getting by Jacobs to take second with 25 circuits in. By lap 30, the heat was on between Abreu and Reutzel, racing nearly nose-to-tail for the next several circuits. The Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports entry showed Abreu its nose on a few occasions, and even with periods of slower traffic playing in Reutzel’s favor, Abreu never faltered. At the finish, Abreu and Reutzel were separated by a mere-1.08 seconds.

“I knew Reutzel was pressuring me, or somebody was pressuring me. You can kinda sense those things,” Rico Abreu continued. “I moved around, but I was just way too free on the bottom. I could keep my car really propped up on the top. Just hats off to my team. We enjoy coming to Attica and we’re already looking forward to coming back.”

“That was all I had,” Aaron Reutzel said after finishing second. “I didn’t realize the race was about to end when it did. I’m not sure what more I could have done. I got to where I could run the top really hard and he started to get tight. I tried to move to the bottom with the intent to get him to move to the bottom, which he did for a little bit, but I didn’t capitalize. I felt like my car was getting better and better, but it was so hard to get runs.”

Tim Shaffer scores first All Star victory of 2020 during Attica Ambush opener

ATTICA, Ohio (September 4, 2020) - A name certainly synonymous with Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 competition, but left winless with the Series since February of 2019, the “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer proved to the open wheel world that he still has what it takes to be an All Star winner, breaking through during Attica Raceway Park’s Attica Ambush opener on Friday night for a $5,000 top prize.

Resulting in the 67th All Star Circuit of Champions victory of his illustrious career, the Aliquippa, Pennsylvania-native led all 40 circuits at the Attica short track to secure his trip to victory lane, withstanding early pressure from fellow sprint car veteran, Jac Haudenschild, before holding off Shane Stewart in the closing circuits. Shaffer is now an eight-time Series winner at Attica Raceway Park, officially tied with Frankie Kerr for second on the all-time Attica All Star win list.

“It’s been a while. I haven’t run with the Series steady, but we’re just out here building a team,” Tim Shaffer said in Attica Raceway Park victory lane, driver of the Canton Erectors, Grove Racing, No. 28 sprint car. “We can only run a limited schedule so we have to make it worthwhile when we do run. Hats off to my guys. Everybody has stepped up and here we are. These kids are getting harder and harder to beat.”

Inheriting a front row starting position after a false start by Cale Conley during the initial green, Shaffer drove on to gain the early advantage, leading Jac Haudenschild and Cale Conley by the flagstand for the first time. Searching around the speedway early, Shaffer found his rhythm within the first few circuits, eventually relying on the top of turns one and two and the bottom of turns three and four. Although in control the entire distance, traffic was never a factor for the former All Star Circuit of Champions titlist, as cautions on lap 10, 21 and 36 kept Shaffer in clean air.

Despite a few early attempts by Haudenschild to work by the Grove Racing No. 28, it was Bixby, Oklahoma’s Shane Stewart who challenged Shaffer late, putting himself in view of the lead after sneaking by the “Wild Child” at the exit of turn four on lap 18.

A caution on lap 36 for a troubled Cory Eliason, who was battling for a top-five spot at the time of the incident, gave Shane Stewart one final opportunity to gain the edge over Shaffer, but the “Steel City Outlaw” proved to be too strong with a clear track ahead.

“This is Attica,” Shaffer continued. “If you don’t move around, you’re going to get it handed to you. The track definitely changes throughout the night. I was hoping I was doing the right things.”

Stewart chased Shaffer to the final checkers, followed by Cale Thomas, Cale Conley and Paul McMahan. Although missing the top-five, Rico Abreu gained 16 positions to finish sixth.

Aaron Reutzel outruns Danny Dietrich to become first repeat All Star winner at Bedford Speedway

BEDFORD, Pa. (August 30, 2020) - The first seven visits to Bedford Speedway resulted in seven different winners, but two-time and defending Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 champion, Aaron Reutzel, crossed into the mult-time threshold on Sunday night and claimed a second Bedford Speedway feature win, doing so over Central Pennsylvania rival and recent Series winner, Danny Dietrich. The All Star victory, accompanied by a $5,000 top prize, was Reutzel’s ninth of the 2020 season, well on his way to a third consecutive Series championship with 11 events remaining on the schedule.

“I really can’t say enough about this team. I can’t be more proud of them,” Aaron Reutzel said, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports, Folkens Brothers Trucking, Fischer Body Shop, Hollywood Blasting and Coating, Precision Catalyst, No. 87 sprint car. “To come back after everything that’s happened, and to win like we did, I couldn’t be more proud of everyone involved. We are really proud of this one tonight.”

Despite starting from the pole position, Reutzel did not lead from start to finish. In fact, the Clute, Texas-native lost the initial battle for the top spot, allowing Dietrich, who started from the outside-pole position, to drive away and lead the first two circuits. A caution on lap three would act as Reutzel’s saving grace, giving the championship hopeful a second chance at controlling the field.

Reutzel’s ensuing restart went off without a hitch, nearly tied to the back bumper of the Gary Kauffman Racing entry as the lead duo raced by the single-file restart cone. Keeping that momentum handy, Reutzel immediately dove to the bottom of turn one and slid across the nose of Dietrich, officially capturing the lead at the exit of turn two.

Although finding a few opportunities to catch Reutzel in traffic, Danny Dietrich would have to settle for second, followed by Paul McMahan, Brent Marks and Cory Eliason.

“I knew I wanted to be right on his back bumper when we came down for the restart. The smart thing for (Dietrich) to do would have been to slide himself, but he left the door open for me and I was able to go in there and slide him,” Reutzel continued. “I knew that restart was going to mean everything because clean air was so important here tonight. Regardless, we had a phenomenal race car. I just couldn’t be more proud.”

What’s Next:
The Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will hit the road and revisit the home of “Ohio’s Finest Racing” during Labor Day weekend, setting-up shop at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday, September 4-5. The two-day Attica Ambush will award a total winner’s share equaling $15,000; $5,000 on Friday and $10,000 on Saturday. 'GOOD TO BE BACK': Brad Sweet Returns To Victory Lane At I-80 Speedway
The reigning champion is now tied with Logan Schuchart for the championship points lead

GREENWOOD, NE — Aug. 30, 2020 — With half of a lap to go before Brad Sweet could see the checkered flag at I-80 Speedway Sunday night, yellow lights flashed around the track.

An accident between two cars racing for 18th evaporated the reigning champion’s 3.8 second lead over Carson Macedo and induced flashbacks of horror.

The night prior he lost the win on the last corner of the last lap.

“I couldn’t believe, take the white flag and the caution comes out,” Sweet said. “I thought, ‘Well, maybe it’s not meant to be.’”

It had been 57 days since his seventh win of the season at Cedar Lake Speedway in early July. Since then, he’s endured multiple nights of bad luck – suffering four DNFs – and heartbreak from wins that never were.

A green-white-checkered finished extended his anxiety an extra lap, making the Feature 31 laps in total.

He didn’t let that faze him, though. When the green flag reappeared for the final time of the night, Sweet mastered his throttle better than the field behind him and launched to about a four-car-length lead ahead of Macedo. From then on, he only extended it, giving no one the opportunity for a last lap pass. He crossed the finish line with a 1.5 second lead to claim his eighth win of 2020, his first at I-80 and 58th career Series win.

“It’s been some trying times,” said Sweet, of Grass Valley, CA. “This NAPA Auto Parts team never gives up. We’ve gone through DNFs and race cars and wild crashes. You know, things that we’re not accustom to. But that’s the adversity of the World of Outlaws tour. Never giving up and trying to stay positive each and every night. We lost a heartbreaker last night, so it is really easy to get down and get frustrated. But come back here and get the car better and better all night.”

The Kasey Kahne Racing team unloaded a dominate car for Sweet Saturday night, but on Sunday at I-80 they had to work toward that. He started the night with a 12th place qualifying effort and was able to translate that into a second place run in his Drydene Heat Race. Sweet managed to find the runner-up spot, again, in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash, however Dash winner Jacob Allen showed he had a car capable of delivering him his first career win.

That thought continued in the first 12 laps of the Feature with Allen able to fend off attacks from Sweet and Macedo.

After a restart with 18 laps to go, Sweet’s car came to life. He dove under Allen into Turn 3 and took the lead from him off Turn 4 to officially lead Lap 13. However, Allen got a run back underneath the NAPA Auto Parts #49 car and bolted back ahead of him into Turn 1.

Allen was unable to hold his car straight off the corner, allowing Sweet another run back underneath him. The two performed a ballet of slide jobs through Turns 3 and 4 with Sweet first sliding in front of Allen on the entrance of the corner to take the top lane and Allen throwing his car down into the corner before sliding back in front of Sweet on the exit of Turn 4.

Sweet cut back underneath Allen down the straightaway and rocketed ahead of him into Turn 1 to claim the lead and run away with it. Allen was then left to fend off his teammate Logan Schuchart, who had made his way from 14th to third, and Macedo in fourth.

As the laps clicked off, Allen eventually faded to sixth while Macedo fought his way back to second and Schuchart, in third, had his hands full with Sheldon Haudenschild – who worked his way up through the field from 18th.

Sweet found traffic late into the Feature and experienced little hinderance from them. Macedo cut a few tenths of a second off Sweet’s lead in the closing laps but had nothing for his fellow Californian once Sweet found clean air. The defending champion was on his way to a near four second victory.

Then, the caution came out. His apparent victory went on hold. Macedo had one last chance to get his second win of the year. However, Sweet had enough of heartbreak. He perfected the restart, picked up the $10,000 check and trophy and left Macedo to wonder, “what if.”

“I feel bad,” said Macedo, of Lemoore, CA. “My guys did a really good job. I felt like I had a car good enough to win there. I really made poor decisions on restarts I felt like… I felt like I was gaining on Brad a little bit and got into the fence over there in (Turns) three and four. I was driving super hard to try and get back by him. That’s the way it goes. He did a great job. That’s why he’s a World of Outlaws champion and I had a lot of fun racing with him.”

Schuchart was able to hold off Haudenschild – who earned the KSE Racing Hard Charger Award for coming from 18th to fourth – and finish third for the second night in a row, after having to change a motor before his Drydene Heat Race. He’s now tied with Sweet for the championship points lead.

“We had a fast race car, just some issues early in the night we had to fight through and keep on pushing,” said Schuchart, of Hanover, PA. “This is what it all come down to. You’re going to have bad nights. You’re going to face adversity and get back up there. That’s what this Drydene Performance Products race team did.”

SMACKDOWN IX IS ALL SUNSHINE FOR A 3RD TIME

Kokomo, Indiana (August 29, 2020)………Snakebitten is a word that has been used to describe Tyler Courtney’s misfortunes at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway throughout the 2020 season. It’s almost hard to imagine that fact for a driver who has become synonymous with victory lane at the track in recent years.

Courtney rediscovered the fountain of success once again Saturday night in the Sprint Car Smackdown IX finale at Kokomo, a track in which he had won at six times in his USAC National career between sprint cars and midgets, and an event in which he had hoisted the coveted champion’s belt at twice before in 2017 and 2019.

The Indianapolis, Ind. native tracked down Brady Bacon 13 laps from the conclusion to score his 28th career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature victory, equaling the total of fellow series champions Levi Jones and J.J. Yeley for 15th all-time, in his efforts worth $11,000 aboard his Clauson-Marshall-Newman Racing/NOS Turbo - CSI - ZMax - Schoenfeld/Spike/Rider Chevy.

In the process, Courtney became the second driver ever to win Smackdown three times in his career, joining the series’, and Kokomo’s, winningest sprint car driver, Dave Darland, who won three-straight in 2013-14-15.

“Dave’s a guy I grew up watching and I watched him win all three of his Smackdowns,” Courtney recalled. “To tie a guy like that here at his home track, it’s just unreal. I never would’ve thought that, when I started racing sprint cars, or started racing Smackdown nine years ago, that I’d even win one of these things, let alone three. To tie a guy like Dave Darland is something that will probably take a while to sink in.”

Back to the snakebitteness, however, the two-time USAC National champion had encountered trouble three separate times while leading or running second at the track in USAC competition this year. During Indiana Midget Week, he flipped while leading two-thirds of the way through. During Indiana Sprint Week, he clipped a turn two infield tire while leading, sending him spinning and stopping just three laps from the finish. In Thursday’s Smackdown opener, while running second, contact with a lapped car flattened Courtney’s tire, putting him out of contention for victory once again.

“I told my guys I’ll take a little bit of bad luck from the last three races if it meant I could win this one,” Courtney said. “This is one you put on the calendar, especially when we were putting our schedule together this year with us not running full-time. We had a gameplan coming into tonight and stuck to it and it worked out. We got a technical racetrack and it almost bit me a little bit, but somehow, I made it through a couple of those situations, and it worked out.”

Courtney started sixth on the grid for the 40-lap feature, and for much of the first half of the race, remained relatively stagnant, holding the fifth position nearing the midway point. Up front, however, the night’s B & W Auto Mart “King of the Hill” winner and pole sitter, Brady Bacon, was in control of the 23-car field as C.J. Leary and Kyle Cummins gave chase in second and third, respectively.

The first of two reds during the feature was displayed on the ninth lap when 19th running Carson Short rode out a flip down the front straightaway from which he walked away unscathed.

Under the ensuing stoppage, 12th running Justin Grant’s misfortune continued when his car didn’t re-fire following the red, ending his night prematurely with a 21st place finish.

When racing resumed, Cummins, who was aiming to become the first driver to win four USAC Sprint races in a row since Rick Hood in 1985, made his way to 2nd past Leary while race Rookie Buddy Kofoid, in just his 3rd career series start, flexed his muscle to take 3rd as Leary got shuffled back to 4th.

The second and final red flag period of the feature arrived on lap 15 when 14th running Clinton Boyles barrel rolled near the outside wall in turn four. The incident also collected the 15th place car of Jake Swanson who spun and stopped in the melee. Both were uninjured, but both were finished for the remainder of the evening.

On the race’s resumption on the 15th lap, Cummins showed Bacon a nose below in turn two, then did so again on the 16th lap. However, quickly shooting into the frame was Courtney, who had exploded from 5th to 3rd on the restart, then was just within arm’s reach of both Cummins in 2nd and Bacon, the race leader, as the top-three ran nose-to-tail on the topside on lap 17.

“We were getting close to halfway there and I knew I needed to start making my moves and not let Brady (Bacon) get too far out because his car was pretty good and Cummins was running 2nd, and obviously, he’s been good the first two nights,” Courtney explained. “I wanted to get by those guys and be able to run my own race. I could tell when I was running behind them that I was a lot better, so I knew if I could just get out and make some clean laps, I’d probably be all right.”

Courtney’s next move came on the 21st lap when he slid past Cummins for second in turn four, gliding from the bottom of turn three all the way up to the outside concrete at the exit of turn four to complete the pass, then, in no time, was challenging Bacon for the race lead.

Courtney hounded Bacon, the two-time USAC National Sprint Car champ, for the next several circuits, seemingly stalking his prey as he readied himself to pounce on any inkling of a misstep. That came on the 28th circuit when Bacon snagged his right rear tire on the lip exiting turn two, knocking him slightly askew as Courtney shot under to snag the lead going away. A reeling Bacon slipped back to 2nd, 3rd and 4th over the next three laps as Cummins, then a resurging Leary, slotted back into the top-three.

“Brady messed up a little bit off two, and I got by him closely, but we got by clean,” Courtney remembered. “I just put the hammer down and tried to put a gap between us because I knew my car was better.”

Courtney quickly gapped his challengers with a 3.6 sec. advantage as he worked traffic around the quarter mile with the race dwindling down to the final four laps.

With the race, and victory, seemingly in hand, Courtney had a couple “moments” down the stretch while possessing a fairly substantial gap between he and Cummins. None bigger than the one he experienced in turn one coming to the white flag as he got some airtime after hitting the cushion, and nearly knocked down the wall and dumped the No. 7BC, before gathering it up and motoring on, albeit while his heart was in the process of skipping a beat.

“That was wild,” Courtney exclaimed. “I got in, biked and got tight up on the wall and thought, ‘Oh my god, you’re really going to throw it away with three laps to go. Come on.’ Luckily, I got down off that and made a couple clean laps at the end. I love Kokomo. I love Smackdown. It was a really, really cool night.”

That “really, really cool night” concluded with Courtney taking a 3.699 sec. margin of victory in the end over Cummins, Leary, Bacon and Kofoid. For Courtney, it was his seventh career USAC National victory at Kokomo, and his five career USAC National Sprint Car feature wins at the track have him third on the all-time list, trailing only the two greatest masters in Kokomo Speedway history, Dave Darland (9) and Tony Elliott (8).

Earlier in the evening, Bacon became the first three-time B & W Auto Mart King of the Hill champion in a series of two-car, three-lap elimination races to determine the starting field. Bacon (Broken Arrow, Okla.) defeated Leary in the final round to win the pole, after previously doing so in both 2014-15.

Meanwhile, a big shuffle in the points saw Grant fall from first to third while Bacon shot from third to first. In fact, the top-four in the standings are only separated by a mere 18 points with Bacon leading Chris Windom (-4), Grant (-7) and Chase Stockon (-18).

Spencer Bayston goes wire-to-wire at Lincoln Speedway for Kramer Klash victory

ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. (August 29, 2020) - Forced to fend off a few of Central Pennsylvania’s elite, as well as the two-time and defending Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 champion, Lebanon, Indiana’s Spencer Bayston cruised into Pennsylvania Posse Country on Saturday night and left a winner, scoring the inaugural Kramer Klash at the “Fabulous” Lincoln Speedway for a $7,300 payday. The wire-to-wire victory, leading all 35 circuits in the Pigeon Hills, pushed Bayston’s All Star win total to three, his first since dominating an Ohio Sprint Speedweek program at Muskingum County Speedway on June 22, 2017.

Clute, Texas’ Aaron Reutzel battled ahead from sixth to finish second, followed by Brian Montieth, Tim Wagaman and a hard-charging Cory Eliason, who worked his way forward from 15th.

“I’m going to have to go back and watch this one again, because I feel like I was pretty ugly in traffic,” Spencer Bayston said jokingly in Lincoln Speedway victory lane, driver of the Swindell Speedlab, Bear Archery, John Christner Trucking, No. 39 sprint car. “I kept hearing guys behind me, but I just tried to keep my eyes ahead and stay focused. I don’t have enough laps yet to have enough confidence to drive through traffic as hard as I should. But man, this car; every time I had the chance to drive it, we had speed. We had speed right out of the gate tonight.”

It was Aaron Reutzel who applied the pressure during the final 14 circuits of the 35-lap contest, but it was Gettysburg’s Danny Dietrich who applied the pressure during the first 21 circuits, utilizing the outside-pole position to power into second right from the drop of the green flag. Using every inch of Lincoln’s configuration, Dietrich did everything he could to track down the Swindell Speedlab entry, eventually reaching the back bumper of the well-known No. 39 in traffic with 12 laps clicked off the counter.

By lap 17, the top three were battling under a blanket, now including Aaron Reutzel, who dived below multi-time track champion, Brian Montieth, to claim third just two laps prior.

Banging the topside of the speedway, the frontrunners continued their nose-to-tail battle for several circuits, that until Dietrich set-up, and partially executed, his first, true takeover attempt on lap 22. As the lead pair were entering turn one, Bayston stayed high, ultimately opening the bottom lane for Dietrich. The former Lincoln Speedway track champion took advantage and pulled off a perfect slider to get by Bayston, but to Dietrich’s demise, a lapped car was blocking his path causing the familiar No. 48 to spin. The 360-degree spin forced Dietrich to retire to the tail of the field. Reutzel inherited second with Montieth following suit; that is where they stayed.

“I know they were close there a few times,” Bayston continued. “Those cautions really did fall in our favor. Having a little luck on our side isn’t a bad thing. I’m very lucky and I’m proud to be a part of this team. To leave here tonight on top after watching these guys race all year is just incredible. I’m so happy right now.”
