Lance Dewease drives by Macri and Larson to score Night Before the 50 prize at Port Royal Speedway

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (September 11, 2020) - Central Pennsylvania living legend, Lance Dewease, made the Pennsylvania Posse diehards extra proud on Friday night at Port Royal Speedway, not only defending home dirt against the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 during the annual Night Before the Tuscarora 50, but driving by, unarguably, the hottest open wheel ace on the planet, Kyle Larson, in the process. The All Star victory, the 40th of Dewease’s illustrious career and 11th at the Port Royal “Speed Palace,” secured the Fayetteville, Pennsylvania-native a $6,000 payday, as well as an automatic starting position in Saturday’s 50-lap, $53,000-to-win finale.

“I wanted to beat him pretty bad,” an elated Lance Dewease said of Kyle Larson in Port Royal Speedway victory lane. “When he beat me earlier in the year here, he waved at me when he passed me coming off of four. I didn’t wave at him when I passed him tonight. Hats off to my entire crew here. Kyle (Larson) hasn’t been passed too many times this year once he’s had the lead.”

Dewease’s march to the Port Royal Speedway victory lane platform commenced from the outside of row two, and although the lead pair, Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson and Dillsburg, Pennsylvania’s Anthony Macri, sliced and diced for much of the 30-lapper, it was a waiting game for Dewease, not taking command for the first time until lap 25. In fact, Larson, who led the first 24 circuits, exchanged the lead with Macri on at least three occasions, all of which countered by Larson before the duo made their way back to the flagstand. In the meantime, Dewease loomed in third, maintaining a straight and steady pace around Port’s notorious bottom groove.

Lap after lap, Macri pressured Larson and the Paul Silva-owned No. 57 entry, especially utilizing lapped traffic that came into play for the first time on lap 12. The momentum change due to slower cars allowed the “Concrete Kid” to slide Larson through turns three and four on lap 14, and again through turns one and two on lap 21, each negated by “Yung Money.” Banging the boards on both ends of the speedway, Macri gave it one final try on lap 25, but to his surprise, and Larson’s, it was Dewease who pulled the trigger, ultimately slipping by the lead pair with a power move through the bottom of turns three and four.

“That’s the only way we can beat these guys,” Lance Dewease continued, driver of the Kreitz Racing, Schannauer Plumbing and Heating, Hess Ornamental Iron, No. 69K sprint car. “Both of those guys are really good; Anthony (Macri) has come a long way and Kyle (Larson) is the best in the business right now. You don’t get to pass guys like that too often. We were good all night and we were good last night, too, we just had some issues under caution. I was able to keep pace tonight and I figured I would be able to keep a better pace once those guys got to traffic. Kyle really never got away from us. I knew I would get a shot at them as long as the cautions didn’t come out putting everyone back in clean air.

“A big thanks to all of the fans for coming out tonight. Thank you all for supporting us week in and week out.”

Macri, who finally worked his way around Kyle Larson on lap 29, chased Dewease to the final checkers, followed by Larson, Dylan Cisney and Rico Abreu.

‘OH MAN’: Emotional Allen Earns First World of Outlaws Victory

In seventh season, Shark Racing pilot conquers Dodge City for breakthrough win with teammate Schuchart second

by Jordan DeLucia

DODGE CITY, KS – Sept. 11, 2020 – He climbed atop his Drydene Performance Products #1a in Dodge City Raceway Park Victory Lane, the emotion already building inside of him.

At long last, Jacob Allen is a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Feature winner.

“Oh man, oh man… I’ve worked really hard,” Allen said to DIRTVision pit reporter Chase Raudman in Victory Lane, nearly overcome with emotion.

Since the trying days of his rookie year with the Outlaws back in 2014, there’s been nothing more Allen has wanted to do than be a World of Outlaws Feature winner. And now, after coming so close so many times, he’s finally done it.

Leading all 30 laps of Friday night’s Boot Hill Showdown opener, Allen was flawless throughout. But in the closing circuits, a sour memory briefly crossed his mind.

“I looked up at the [lap counter] at some point at the end there, and I saw it said three-to-go, and I was like, ‘oh man, I know what this is like, leading with about three-to-go and then breaking.’ So, I was just being cool and racing my race.”

Allen flashed back on the disappointment of his run at Stockton Dirt Track in September of last year, leading the NOS Energy Drink Showdown with under three laps remaining when an ignition box failure struck, sending him to the infield as his Shark Racing teammate Logan Schuchart zoomed on by to win $20,000.

But that’s all behind him now. Shark Racing can now eat from the fruits of their labor – the labor that Allen takes so much pride in.

“So much has gone into it,” he said. “Being so close to just giving up and not wanting to do it, but just to come back this year and take a whole new look on everything and be positive and be cool about it. Finally, this has paid off, and to have Logan second is pretty badass.

“I’m just thankful to drive this #1a with Drydene on it, and Logan, and this whole team to be part of Drydene, racing and my dad… This is an honor. I’ll never forget this.”

Of course, no victory ever comes easy against the World of Outlaws, and Allen’s first was no exception. Starting from the outside pole, Allen beat polesitter Tim Kaeding into Turn 1 on the opening lap and shot out to the early lead, Schuchart right behind him.

Down the backstretch the teammates raced on Lap 2, almost completely even as they entered Turn 3. Allen was able to pull away slightly, but Schuchart came back at him on the bottom one lap later; Allen again denying him with speed down the straightaways.

A series of caution flags were thrown for debris around the halfway mark, forcing Allen to hang tough on the restarts. Which, he did. With the likes of Schuchart, Donny Schatz, David Gravel and Brad Sweet behind him, not once did the Hanover, PA-native flinch when the pressure was on.

As the laps wound down, Allen began to catch the tail of the field again. He first looked to the outside of Mason Daniel to put him a lap down but lost some speed on the top side, allowing Schuchart to close the gap.

Allen did find his way around on the inside next time around, Schuchart taking the same route with two laps remaining. But by that time, Allen had already widened the gap too far for the Drydene #1s to make up. Smooth and steady out of Turn 4 for the final time, Allen crossed the stripe for his first $10,000 victory.

He knows he’s been through a lot, but he never gave up. Allen’s unshakable determination was even tested at I-80 Speedway just two weekends ago, where he started on the pole and led the first 12 laps, battling with defending champion Brad Sweet before fading back to sixth.

But the one thing that remained with him all this time – his will to win. The never-say-die attitude carried him through the rough defeats of his past.

“Just being so close so many times and not winning… I wouldn’t show it or talk about it, and I always try to be positive. But when I’m chilling in my motorhome or just hanging out, deep down, it definitely bites at you a little bit,” Allen said.

“But you can’t give up. I’m only 26. I have a whole long racing career ahead of me, and I came about this World of Outlaws tour in a very different way. I’m proud of myself, I’m proud of my team and everybody who’s supported me and never given up on me.”

It was all smiles from the runner-up as well in Victory Lane, as Schuchart gave Allen a big hug before his post-race interview. If anyone else there knew how hard Allen has worked to earn his first win, it was him.

“Words can’t describe how happy I am for him,” Schuchart said. “Just the emotions of crossing that finish line and knowing he won. I tried my all to pass him, just like I did at Stockton and any other time he was leading a race. I’m a competitor, that’s what I do. Again, I couldn’t catch him. He was running a great race, a smart race, and I’m just so happy for him and his guys.”

Rounding out the podium with a solid run in the top-five all race was Donny Schatz. The 10-time World of Outlaws champion started third and finished there with a car he said was solid, making up four points on Brad Sweet in the championship standings.

“It was a good race. I thought we were gonna be able to get there, but just couldn’t seem to make anything happen. Some nights are like that, and tonight was one of those,” Schatz said.

ATTICA, Ohio – A few weeks ago Craig Mintz was down on himself. He had crashed at Attica Raceway Park and decided to take some time away from racing to clear his mind and get refocused. It paid off Friday, Sept. 11 as the two-time Attica track champion took the lead with just six laps to go and survived a late race caution to score his first win of the season on Kistler Racing Products/Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome Plating/American Powersports presents the Mark Keegan Classic Season Championship Night.

“We haven’t won in a couple of years and I can’t tell you the last time we won at Attica. We have been struggling. And it’s not my guys…it’s me mentally. Some nights I’m not here mentally. Tonight we had a pretty good night overall. It was fun racing with Travis (Philo) and Cale (Conley) at the end. My wife is probably mad because she wasn’t here but I love her and my son and daughter. I have to thank my dad and Rich and we threw a new guy on our team tonight…it’s amazing to be here. To be honest with you this is a 2017 GF1 (chassis) so George Fisher must have been up there looking out after us,” said Mintz beside his Real Geese Decoys, Eagle Ignition Leads, KS Sales & Service, Kistler Racing Engines, Elite Wings backed 09.

“There were nights I sat home on Fridays and Saturdays and barely could watch because I wanted to be here. But I knew for the best for the team was take some time off and go build another race car and have it set up the way we wanted and come back strong rather than keep banging your head against the wall,” added Mintz about his 15th career Attica 410 victory.

Republic, Ohio’s Cap Henry racked up his first ever Attica Raceway Park track championship with his sixth place finish in a season that saw him win seven features at the track.

“My visor got so fogged up I couldn’t see those guys and I knew I should quit racing with Craig when I couldn’t find him. I just kind of backed up to make sure we could finish that thing. I can’t say enough about my team…it’s a team effort and I’m just proud of these guys. It’s incredible. We got really close last year and just couldn’t do it so to seal it off this year…it’s been a remarkable season. I haven’t won a championship in anything since I was a little kid in go-karts,” said Henry of his Lane Racing team.

Mansfield, Ohio’s Matt Irey came into championship night just 16 points behind Devin Shiels. All Irey could do was win and hope Shiels finished worst than third. Irey did his part but so did Shiels. Irey took the lead with five laps to go and drove to his second late model victory of the season at Attica and the fifth of his career. Shiels held on to finish third and claim his second track title by just two points.

“This thing has been a rocket ship all year. We broke a motor last week and we put the small motor in to come out tonight. I couldn’t do this without all my family and my wife…I got married two weeks ago. We did everything we could….just came up a little bit short,” said Irey beside his Mid-Ohio Graphics, Rod Eddleblute’s Garage, Robin Jakubick Realtor, Artisan Concrete, Flenner Water Well & Excavating, Kilgore & Harring CPA backed #36.

For Shiels, the pressure of having to finish in the top three to win the track title was pretty intense.

“I love double point nights…not. We blew the water pump off last week for our worst finish of the year. Luckily it wasn’t a point night,” said Shiels.

Fremont’s Paul Weaver put an exclamation point on his phenomenal year in the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints, dominating the 25 lap feature for his seventh win of the year and 56th of his career in the division. It wrapped up his fourth track title in the last five years.

“I have to thank B&B Drains…Pam and Steve Brown came on board last year and Dave Rice and Bob Hampshire for helping get the motor going…that’s the most expensive part. Anyone can buy a race car but the motors are out priced basically,” said Weaver of his B&B Drain Service, Hampshire Racing Engines, M&L Excavating, Seagate Sandblasting, Weaver Performance backed #1W.

Travis Philo and Ricky Peterson brought the field to green for the 30-lap 410 sprint feature with Philo grabbing the lead over Peterson with Cale Conley, Mintz, Cap Henry and Tim Shaffer battling hard for third. Mintz drove into second on lap two and closed quickly on Philo.

While the battle for the lead was entertaining so was the race for third between Conley and Henry. At the half-way point the leaders were slicing and dicing through heavy lapped traffic and Conley capitalized, taking second from Mintz on lap 17 and closed on Philo. But Mintz regrouped and retook the runner-up spot on lap 20 and four laps later drove under Philo for the lead.

The only thing that slowed Mintz’ march to the checkers was a caution with two laps to go. Mintz got a fantastic restart and drove away to the win over Conley who took second on the restart, Philo, Shaffer and Chad Kemenah.

With his fifth place finish, Kemenah has tightened the point battle with Cap Henry in the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series Presented by the Baumann Auto Group heading into the championship night Saturday at Fremont Speedway.

Nate Potts and Mike Bores brought the field to green for the 25 lap late model feature with Bores, who scored the win a week ago, taking the lead over Shiels, Larry Bellman, Potts, Ryan Missler and Irey.

Bores pulled away to a commanding lead while the action behind him was heating up. Shiels ran comfortably in second with Bellman and Irey locked in a torrid battle for third. The leaders raced into heavy lapped traffic by the 12 circuit with Bores lead beginning to evaporate as Shiels and Irey closed. Irey took second with nine laps remaining and closed to within half a car length of Bores.

The only caution flew with five laps to go and on the restart Irey drove around Bores for the lead. Bores continued to drive under Irey but could not make the winning pass as Irey took the checkers over Bores, Shiels, Missler and Gregg Haskell.

Weaver and Jim McGrath comprised the front row of the 25 lap 305 sprint A-main and when the green flew a multi-car incident brought out the red; there were no injuries. On the second attempt for green Weaver drove into the lead and pulled away while the action behind him was entertaining.

A caution with seven laps to go put Seth Schneider, Matt Foos and Jamie Miller right on Weaver’s rear bumper but the veteran was able to pull away once again. A final caution with four laps to go would not slow Weaver’s march to the win and championship. He pulled away for the victory as Miller, Schneider, Foos and Kody Brewer rounded out the top five.

WINDOM TAKES VICTORY & USAC SPRINT POINT LEAD AT BLOOMINGTON

By: Richie Murray - USAC Media

Bloomington, Indiana (September 11, 2020).........After a victory slipped through his fingertips on the final lap of a midget race last weekend, Chris Windom was determined not to play it as conservatively this time around in Friday's USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway.

"I learned that lesson last week in the midget race," Windom testified after taking the lead at Bloomington on third lap from Kyle Cummins, then held off Cummins' pesky resurgence down the stretch to claim his 27th career USAC National Sprint Car feature win, equaling him with Kevin Thomas Jr. for 18th all-time.

The triumph was Windom's second career USAC score at Bloomington, and first since the 2011 season in his Hayward Motorsports/NOS Energy Drink - OilFire - B & H Contractors/DRC/Claxton Mopar. On that occasion, Windom rolled the bottom to victory. This time, the path required a road of a different kind.

"I've always felt like I've been pretty good here; I just never got that second USAC win," Windom explained. "Notoriously, I feel like I'm better at running the bottom here, but it was cool to get a win running the top."

In the process, Windom took over the point lead in the new USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car standings, making it two different series he currently leads along with the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship.

Windom came into the night 2nd, trailing by four points to Bacon, but the beginning of the feature also saw him trailing in an unexpected way. The first two tries at the start of the feature saw both instances aborted by race officials. Windom, who was determined to have jumped both starts, was moved back a row from his 2nd place starting position to the outside of row two when the green flag finally put the race into motion.

Cummins, who had been elevated into Windom's slot on the front row, stepped out to the early lead around the outside of pole sitter Brent Beauchamp in turn three on the opening lap. As Beauchamp slid up the track on entry in the third turn, Windom ducked under to move back into 2nd with Cummins just ahead.

On the third lap, the door swung wide open for Windom as Cummins slid up the racing surface himself in turn two. Windom cut under and took off with the lead like a thief in the night.

From there forward, Windom constructed a one second lead that ultimately ballooned to two seconds as he cut through lapped traffic in the midst of the middle stages of the 30-lap main event. All the while, Windom was persuaded by his surroundings to change his exploration route, and adjusting accordingly on the fly.

"I was running the bottom early on and I felt like we had really good speed," Windom recalled. "The longer the race went on, the track started going away. It was tough to run the bottom because there was grease and it was slick. If you didn't hit it just right, you'd lose all your time in the corners. I felt like, once I got to lapped traffic, some of the lapped cars were maintaining speed up top so I thought the top was probably the better place to go. So, I moved up at the point."

Windom's multiple second lead evaporated on the 19th lap when 10th running Sterling Cling levitated over the banking between turns three and four, landing on all fours before coming to a complete stop to bring out the yellow.

That instance changed the ballgame for Windom, and for Cummins too, who now had a shot at redemption without the hindrance of traffic. Just the open road and thoughts of victory racing through his mind. Cummins took a run on the bottom of turns one and two on the lap 19 restart, pulling even alongside with Windom for the length of the back straightaway. Windom utilized the constant speed of the high line in this case and ripped around Cummins to put a lockdown on the position.

"I knew Kyle was going to be good here; he's always good here," Windom reinforced. "They can get their car really good about anywhere through the middle. He showed that on that restart where he was able to slide up next to me, but I felt that if I stayed on the top and didn't make a mistake, the momentum was going to prevail."

Three stoppages occurred in the stretch run during the final 12-lap run, including one for Shane Cottle who went up in smoke with an engine issue while running in the 5th position with five laps remaining, plus Anton Hernandez's flip over the turn three banking on lap 25. On each said restart, Windom's theory proved true, as he carried the momentum topside to establish a five-car length lead on what would be the final, lap 25 restart.

The triumph was Chris Windom's second career USAC score at Bloomington, and first since the 2011 season in his Hayward Motorsports/NOS Energy Drink - OilFire - B & H Contractors/DRC/Claxton Mopar. It was his 27th career USAC National Sprint Car feature win, equaling him with Kevin Thomas Jr. for 18th all-time.(David Nearpass Photo)

However, Cummins began to inch closer to Windom on each successive circuit, and coming to the white flag, Cummins took aim for the race lead in turn three. Nonetheless, with one shot to take and one shot only, Cummins fired that shot with an attempted slider on the bottom of the third turn that sent him sliding straight up the racetrack as Windom opened up his advantage to secure the position once and for all.

"I actually didn't see him," Windom said, referring to Cummins on his bid for the lead. "I was focused hard on not running off the curb there. I knew he was probably close if he was hitting the bottom just right, but I was watching and waiting until I saw someone. If I had to dive down, I was going to dive down, but I felt if I kept running smooth laps up there, we were going to be okay."

Windom's margin of victory was 0.948 as his second series victory of 2020 propelled him to the point lead by 23 points over Chase Stockon. Cummins finished 2nd - his fifth consecutive top-2 finish with the series dating back to August 2. Kevin Thomas Jr. finished 3rd, his best result with the series since mid-June. Stockon was 4th after starting 13th to earn KSE Racing Products / B & W Auto Mart Hard Charger honors. Brent Beauchamp finished 5th and has top-seven results in all three of his USAC starts this season.

Kevin Thomas Jr., meanwhile, earned the 29th quick time of his USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car career during Fatheadz Qualifying Friday night at Bloomington. That puts KTJ just one behind Pancho Carter for 10th all-time in that category.

Cory Eliason earns fifth-career All Star win in Tuscarora Weekend opener

PORT ROYAL, Pa. (September 10, 2020) - For the fifth time in his career, and for the first time in Pennsylvania, Visalia, California’s Cory Eliason is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, doing so during night one of the 53rd running of the Tuscarora 50 at Port Royal Speedway. The 2019 All Star Rookie of the Year is now a three-time Series winner in 2020, accumulating all three since August 2 when the driver of the Rudeen Racing entry secured $20,000 during the Huset’s Speedway grand reopening. The Port Royal Speedway victory earned Eliason a $6,000 top prize.

“They don’t call this place the ‘Speed Palace’ no nothing,” Cory Eliason said in victory lane, driver of the Rudeen Racing/Hagar Realty/Rayce Rudeen Foundation/No. 26 sprint car. “It was a blast here tonight. Definitely a lot different than what we saw on Monday during the Labor Day Classic. The kind of track we had here tonight is kinda my forte. Hats off to this entire team. They work hard and continue to work hard day in and day out. We were fast right out of the gate tonight and it really showed. All we can do is come back tomorrow and try to do this again.”

Lining-up third on the main event grid, Eliason was an obvious threat right from the start. Although forced to withstand a pair of red flag incidents which halted action before a single lap could be completed, and fading one position to fourth when the race finally commenced, Eliason was quick on his feet, eventually regaining third from Kerry Madson on lap two, then sneaking by Brian Brown to capture second with only three laps in the books. Meanwhile, feature pole sitter Tony Stewart was the man in charge, maintaining command over the field while Eliason moved through the top five.

By lap six, Eliason was all over Tony Stewart for the race lead, actually pulling even with the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion as the pair raced into turn one to begin lap seven. Unfortunately for Eliason, caution flags would wave, negating Eliason’s bid for the lead. Eliason would be forced to restart second with Kerry Madsen and Brian Brown in tow.

Despite the ensuing restart not giving Eliason the jump that he needed, it was only a matter of time, as the 2020 All Star championship contender put himself back within striking distance by lap 12. In much similar fashion as lap seven, Eliason dove to the bottom of turn one to begin lap 13 and slid across the nose of Stewart, securing control for the California hotshoe for the first time.

Once in command, it was smooth sailing for Eiason, and although faced with a number of cautions, one of which inducing a green-white-checkered finish, and a few glimpses of slower traffic, on top of the field is where Eliason stayed. Kerry Madsen battled home to finish second, followed by Tony Stewart, Gio Scelzi and Tyler Courtney.

“We worked on a few things tonight, but nothing major,” Eliason said. “We were fortunate enough to find the curb which allowed us to make up a lot of ground in three and four. I really didn’t have to adjust my driving style much to determine how the car was going to act. I’ve always wanted to stand up here in Port Royal’s new victory lane, and now here we are. Just an awesome night all around.”

In addition, the preliminary victory secured Eliason a spot in Saturday’s 50-lap, $53,000-to-win main event.

ON THE MONEY: Kyle Larson Claims $20K With Big Huset’s Speedway Win
Brad Sweet continues to extend his points lead with top-five finish Sunday night

BRANDON, SD — Sept. 6, 2020 — Two times Kyle Larson entered Huset’s Speedway with winning potential. Two times the historic track denied him that opportunity.

During a race at the track in August, Larson flipped early in the night and destroyed the car he had been dominating the year with. Then, Saturday night, during the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series’ first return to the track in four years, Larson blew a tire while leading and suffered enough damage that he was unable to continue.

However, Sunday night, with $20,000-to-win on the line, Larson was unwilling to be denied his chance at a Huset’s Speedway win with the World of Outlaws. Keeping his car on all four wheels and tread on his tires, Larson methodically worked his way through the field to claim his first win at the South Dakota track, his 10th Series win this season and 18th career win overall.

“It’s definitely cool to get a win here (at Huset's Speedway),” said Larson, of Elk Grove, CA. “I love bull rings. It had a big curb there. A lot of fun. Really tricky.”

He started the night by earning Quick Time for the second night in a row – third time in three races at Huset’s Speedway – and then went on to win the third Drydene Heat Race of the night.

Gio Scelzi emerged as an early contender. He passed David Gravel for the lead on the first lap of the fourth Drydene Heat Race and went on to win it. He then gave Gravel déjà vu by passing him for the lead on the first lap of the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash and went on to win that, as well – claiming the pole for the 35-lap Feature. Larson finished fourth in the Dash.

At the start of the Feature, Scelzi was able to pull ahead of Gravel with ease and claim the early lead. Behind him, a war brewed for the runner-up spot between Gravel, Larson, Kerry Madsen and Carson Macedo.

Madsen made early attempts at stealing the spot from Gravel but failed. Macedo was successful in doing so for a few laps before falling victim again to Gravel after a failed attempt of trying to take the lead from Scelzi.

Macedo’s fortune continued to turn for the worse with 15 laps to go. Jason Sides spun in front of him, causing the two to collide. Macedo tried to spin his car back around straight but ended up colliding with Saturday night’s winner Sheldon Haudenschild. Macedo was able to continue and finish 15th, while Haudenschild suffered too much damage and had to retire – finishing 20th.

On the following restart, Larson, now in third, had enough of watching others battle for second. He darted pasted Gravel for the position on the entry to Turn 1.

The runner-up spot was his and the lead was now within reach. The familiar scent of victory teased his senses.

Like the Larson of races past, he ripped the top of the track, pushing his car to its limits. Doing so helped him gain on Scelzi but also caused him to lose ground when he hit the cushion the wrong way. He didn’t have to work too hard to get back close to Scelzi, though. A caution did that for him.

Scelzi chose the top lane, giving Larson the bottom for the restart with 11 laps to go. The advantage went to Larson. Scelzi accelerated and slid sideways through Turn 4 while Larson had a straight shot off the corner. By the time they reached the flag stand, Larson was four car lengths ahead of Scelzi.

From then on, Larson looked like he had just been playing with everyone. He pulled away to about a three second lead in five laps.

A caution with three laps to go set the stage for Larson to potentially lose another race at Huset’s. But this time, no one, and nothing, was going to stop him. He jetted away from the field on the restart and pulled away to the win – finally conquering the historic track.

“The restarts weren’t working out for me early and I made a couple mistakes on some of the restarts,” Larson said. “We were on it pretty good those last few restarts. I was able to get by Gravel and Gio (Scelzi) shocked me when he took the top. I felt like that was a really smart move to take the top because we’re starting to get good runs on the restarts starting up there. I think it was just his first time up there and spun his tires a little bit and I was able to get a good run down here in the moisture and get clear and lead the rest of the way.”

James McFadden surprised many with his showstopping late race charge. He muscled his way to the runner-up spot by the end of the race after having started 11th.

“Just dialed the restarts there in the last couple,” said McFadden, of Warrnambool, VIC, Australia. “Good to get a runner-up. Would be good to race [Larson]. We just need to start further up toward the front.”

Gravel rounded out the podium, collecting valuable points for Jason Johnson Racing, who is now 14 points behind Kasey Kahne Racing for the team championship – tied with Shark Racing for the runner-up spot.

“I think we had a good enough car to win, just so many restarts I would lose a spot or lose track time about every single time,” said Gravel, of Watertown, CT. “Gio had a really slow pace (on restarts) and our car did not like that. We have to do our homework and fix that up.”

Scelzi ended the night fourth after leading the first 24 laps and Brad Sweet had a solid night with a fifth-place finish. That helped the reigning champion extend his points lead for the second night in a row – now 14 points ahead of second-place Logan Schuchart, who finished ninth. Ten-time Series champion Donny Schatz remains third – now 80 points back – but managed to earn the KSE Racing Hard Charger Award with his march from 20th to eighth.
