Aaron Reutzel tracks down Cory Eliason to score Volunteer Speedway victory
BULLS GAP, Tenn. (June 27, 2020) - It took fifth-starting Aaron Reutzel 23 circuits to track down Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 championship rival Cory Eliason, but once the Clute, Texas-native secured the top spot on lap 24, the Texas Sprint Car Nationals main event on the highbanks of Volunteer Speedway was as good as complete. Although forced to endure a green-white-checkered finish, Reutzel’s dominance was clear, eventually escaping to a two-second advantage in just two trips around the speedway.
A sweet ending to a bitter night for the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports team, Reutzel was forced to change motors after his respective hot lap session, only to be caught-up in an incident during the evening’s dash. The familiar No. 87 did restart the dash, but had to settle with a fifth-place result.
The $5,000 triumph, a first-ever for Reutzel at Volunteer and a first-ever as a full-time All Star in the state of Tennessee, bumped Reutzel’s 2020 win tally to six during All Star Circuit of Champions competition, continuing his chase toward a third consecutive Series title.
Eliason, who led the first 23 laps before losing the top spot to Reutzel, held on to finish second at Volunteer on Saturday night, followed by Nashville’s Paul McMahan and three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Tony Stewart.
“Everyone always talks about how good their team is, but I have the best team in the pit area. This was definitely a tough night,” Aaron Reutzel boasted in Volunteer Speedway victory lane, backed by Folkens Brothers Trucking, Fischer Body Shop, Ti22, and Hollywood Blasting. “We had to do so much tonight, but they never gave up and continued to work hard no matter what was thrown at them. They proved why we won the championship the last two years. My team won this race tonight.”
Utilizing the outside-front row starting spot, Visalia, California’s Cory Eliason jumped to the early advantage, quickly driving away from Paul McMahan, Sye Lynch and Tony Stewart. In fact, Eliason’s only challenge during the first 15 laps of the 30-lap contest was in the form of lapped traffic, which came into play for the first time on lap nine. At the time, Reutzel was battling in the fifth position, eventually earning a spot over Stewart to claim fourth on lap 13. Two circuits later, Reutzel was on the move again, this time working by the Pete Grove-owned entry occupied by Sye Lynch.
Working the very topside of turns one and two, and sneaking through the middle and very bottom of turns three and four, Reutzel powered his way around McMahan to take second on lap 20, this time using a slide job between turns one and two to secure the position.
Despite Eliason’s attempt to escape in traffic, Reutzel’s momentum was too powerful to overcome, as the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports entry cut the near-straightaway lead to less than a car length by lap 22. One circuit later, Reutzel made his first bid for the lead, and although the slider did not stick, a slider the following lap would, driving by Eliason at the exit of turn two on lap 24.
The main event’s first and only caution appeared on lap 29 forcing the aforementioned green-white-checkered finish.
“You could only drive into the corner so hard above the cushion because you would just slide to the fence,” Reutzel continued. “There was only one piece of moisture in that whole corner and that was right along the bottom. When I went in and turned down, I could get a good run down the front stretch. I just kept digging at it and digging at it and I was able to make up some time on people. We were able to track down (Eliason) without a caution and that’s just a statement of how good we were.”
“We were good in one and two, but we struggled in three and four. That’s where Aaron (Reutzel) beat us,” Cory Eliason said, driver of Rudeen Racing No. 26. “He was able to carry momentum a lot better than I could. We are getting a lot closer to where we need to be. This kinda happened to me in Australia where I finished on the podium twelve or so times in a row before I finally won one. Sometimes finishing second can get frustrating. Hats off to my team. We were fast all night.”
As an added bonus for Reutzel, his feature performance also secured the evening’s Hercules Tires Hard Charger Award.

The Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will continue their weekend in the Volunteer State with a second consecutive appearance at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee, on Sunday, June 28. Flat Left Front Not Enough To Stop Hafertepe At I-30 Speedway With Lucas Oil ASCS

(June 27, 2020) Even with a flat left front tire over the final four laps on Saturday's SawBlade.com A-Feature, it was not enough to slow Sam Hafertepe, Jr. as the driver of the Hills Racing/Heidbreder Foundation No. 15h led start to finish with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network at I-30 Speedway.

"I just got a little too greedy," chuckled Hafertepe over the flat front tire. "I did that with about four laps to go, and I just started being careful, so it didn't dig in."
Hafertepe's third career victory with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network at the Arkansas quarter-mile, the win is Sam's 50th overall with the National Tour since 2010.
Fending off numerous restart attempts at the lead by Mississippi's Dale Howard, the No. 15h used the final 15 lap green flag run to stretch his advantage to 2.747 seconds. Battling with Roger Crockett over the last half of the Feature, the pair went side by side several times as Howard held off the No. 11. Blake Hahn grabbed third on Lap 26 after Dale and Roger nearly made contact. Blake was able to hold on to complete the night's podium after starting seventh on the grid. Roger Crockett ended up fourth with Jordan Mallett, from 11th, taking the fifth position on the closing lap.
Moving up six positions, Missouri's Garet Williamson ended up sixth with Cody Gardner seventh. Having to race through the first BMRS B-Feature, after being disqualified during his Qualifier for rough driving, Howard Moore rebounded to eighth after starting 19th. Having fallen out the top ten late in the A-Feature, Matt Covington came back to finish ninth with Chase Randall posting his first top ten of the season against the National Tour.
The 76th event at I-30 Speedway since 1993 with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network; the Saturday showdown drew a field of 42 drivers from 10 states and three countries. SCE Gaskets Heat Races were topped by John Carney II, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Brad Bowden, Howard Moore, and Zach Pringle. Hoosier Tire Qualifiers went to Justin Sanders, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., and Roger Crockett. A pair of BMRS B-Features were topped by Tim Crawley and Dylan Westbrook. Provisional were utilized by Harli White and Robbie Price based on National Tour Owner Points. A Regional Provisional was used by Joseph Miller.

FREMONT, Ohio – Chad Kemenah was forced to adjust his line during the 410 sprint feature and he made it work to perfection, taking the lead with just two laps to go to claim the $4,000 top prize at Fremont Speedway Saturday on Willie’s Sales and Service Night.
Kemenah, a Fremont, Ohio native, battled very hard with Caleb Griffith the final eight laps, with the pair making slight contact at one point. Kemenah had actually taken the lead on lap 23 of the 30-lap feature but a caution put Griffith back to the point. On the ensuing restart Griffith went to the bottom to block but Kemenah was able to make his Liz Matus Racing machine work the middle and high line and finally got around Griffith on lap 28 and held on for his 13th career Fremont win. It was his first win at “The Track That Action Built” since defeating the World of Outlaws in 2016.

As you could see a week ago my experimenting went horribly wrong. It was the second night of the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series Presented by the Baumann Auto Group.
Leipsic, Ohio’s Chase Dunham started his sprint car racing career in the 305 division at Fremont Speedway. Those learning laps at the track paid off Saturday as he took the lead with nine laps to go and held off several challenges from veteran Tim Allison to score his first career sprint car win with the K&L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders.
“It definitely helped just having some more laps here than the other guys. This is my first win…I can’t thank my sponsors enough…William Vaughn Company, Dales Concrete, Bob Hampshire, George’s LP Gas, Precision Laser Forming, Tim Hogan’s George Dalton Carpet, Miller Construction, K&L Ready Mix, Banshee Graphics,” said Dunham in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.
Matt Foos gave his dad, Dave, a former sprint car mechanic, a great birthday present Saturday…a victory. Foos battled with Brandon Moore throughout the 25 laps of the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature before driving to his eighth career Fremont win.
It was the second night of the NAPA Auto Parts of Bryan AFCS Presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales for the 305 sprints.
“We got my dad on the wrenches. Got him out of retirement. He came with us last night (at Attica Raceway Park where he was the hard charger) and it showed. We’re a good combo. I can give him a lot of feedback,” said Foos beside his Speed Shark Graphics, 818 Club, DR’s Powerlab, CS9 Chassis, Kear’s Speed Shop and Berryman Racing Shocks backed #12.
Toledo, Ohio’s Cory McCaughey has finished second 14 times at Fremont Speedway in the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks. It took a new ride to finally put him in victory lane Saturday. McCaughey, who started 11th, took the lead from Shawn Valenti with just three laps to go and held off the veteran for his first ever Fremont Speedway win.
“Thank you Mark Kachenmeister so much for the opportunity. To beat Shawn you have to have a big ole set and drive that thing right in there,” said McCaughey beside his KC Engineering; Ron Miller Race Cars and DAS Motors.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action with a huge double-header Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5 as part of the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek. The dirt trucks will be on the racing card Saturday with the 305 sprints joining the All Stars on Sunday. Gates will open at 3 p.m. both days.

A star-filled night is planned for Tuesday, June 30 at the Grandview Speedway when the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presents the RED ROBIN 410 SPRINT SPEED WEEK $10,000 to win Hodnett Cup. Joining the 410 Sprints will be the 358 NASCAR Modifieds. Gates open at 5 PM with race time set for 7:30 PM Along with the rich payoff, this race is dedicated to one of the all-time great Sprint Car drivers, Greg Hodnett who lost his life in a racing accident in 2018. Hodnett is a six time Thunder Series champion and a nine time feature winner at Grandview.
Some of the top 410 Sprint Car drivers in country will be on the Hill at Grandview Tuesday night, including Lance Dewease, a ten time Thunder on the Hill feature winner, just one win behind Billy Pauch, the winningest sprint car driver at Grandview with eleven victories. Sammy Swindell is expected to be in the field and his one and only Thunder on the Hill victory came on May 29, 1996 in a World of Outlaws event. Always exciting, Rico Abreu of Rutherford, CA is coming to the Hill to chase his first Thunder win. Freddie Rahmer Jr, a one time winner at Grandview is always fast on the high-banked one-third mile oval. Danny Dietrich, Lucas Wolfe, Brent Marks, Ryan Smith, Anthony Macri and TJ Stutts are all contenders for the $10,000 Hodnett Cup prize.
Joining the high powered 410 Sprints will be the always exciting 358 NASCAR Modifieds taking part in a series of qualifying events leading up to the $3,000 to win 30 lap feature. Possible modified entries include Craig VonDohren, Duane Howard, Mike Gular, Jeff Strunk, Doug Manmiller and Ryan Watt.
Event sheets and payoff details for both the 410 Sprints and 358 Modifieds are posted on the website at www.thunderonthehillracingseries.com. Grandstand admission for this event is $30 for adults, $10 for children 6 to 11 and kids five and under will be admitted for free. The Pit fee is $40 and a license is not required.
Advance tickets for this event are available by calling 443-513-4456. Please speak clearly, provide you first and last name and the number of tickets you need. There is no need to leave your phone number. Tickets may be paid for and picked up on race night at the Will Call Window after 4:30 PM. With advance tickets, you may enter the grandstands immediately after receiving your tickets. We do ask that you please bring exact change. General admission tickets will go on sale at 5 PM.
The Thunder Series will continue on Tuesday night, August 4 when the USAC National Midgets invade the Hill for the 2nd Annual Ken Brenn Midget Masters also joined by the 358 NASCAR Modifieds with action getting underway at 7:30 PM. On Thursday night, August 27, Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions 410 sprints will bring the party to the Hill with the 358 NASCAR Modifieds being part of this double header on Levan Machine & Truck Night at Grandview.
The Thunder Series will close out 2020 with the Annual October Halloween event on Saturday night, October 17 with the Trick or Treat Triple 20’s for 358 Modifieds joined by the Sportsman with a 6 PM starting time.

MARATHON MAN: Logan Schuchart ends long night at Jackson Motorplex with big win
The Shark Racing driver maintains AGCO Jackson Nationals points lead going into final night
JACKSON, MN – June 26, 2020 – Aside from the medal around his neck and a few drops of sweat sliding down his face, you’d never be able to tell Logan Schuchart just endured a six-hour marathon.
The Hanover, PA driver not only survived a double World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Feature night at the 4/10-mile Jackson Motorplex on Friday, he ended the night as the top driver.
After finishing fourth in round one of the 42nd Annual AGCO Jackson Nationals at the beginning of the night, Schuchart came back stronger in round two and won by close to five seconds. He now goes into Saturday’s AGCO Jackson Nationals $30,000-to-win finale with a 22-point lead over Daryn Pittman for the title.
“It feels good,” said Schuchart about his point lead in the crown jewel event. “With the different format you never know if you should sandbag or try to start on the pole. That’s a tough equation to figure that out. You see some cars miss it when they try and do that. We tried to go as fast as we could every time we hit the racetrack. It’s paid off for us. We’re going to be up front in this thing.”
He picked up valuable points throughout the night with runner-up finishes in his Drydene Heat Race and the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – placing him on the outside pole for the Feature.
When the green flag waved to start the 25-lap event, Schuchart got a bad start, allowing polesitter Jason Sides to pull away and Daryn Pittman to sneak underneath him. He saw an opening to charge back around both of them off Turn 2, though. While riding the high side of the track, Schuchart ran both of them down by the center of the corner. However, the opening he saw closed when Sides slid up the track and blocked his lane. Sides’ mistake allowed Pittman to dart out front.
Schuchart made his way by Sides shortly after and began to hunt Pittman down. He could inch closer to the Roth Enterprises #83 car every lap, but never enough to the point where he could make a run at Pittman. The two cars were about equal in speed.
That changed on Lap 9 when Pittman slid off Turn 2 while trying to pass a slower car and allowed Schuchart bolt by him for the lead. From then on, there was nothing Pittman could do. The Drydene #1S quickly put about a straightaway distance between them and continued to grow it every lap.
Pittman and third-place Brad Sweet, who won round one early in the day, were left to try and maintain their podium positions.
When Schuchart crossed the finish line, he had a 4.7 sec. lead over Pittman.
“I was a little worried at the beginning because Daryn is always fast here with the 83 team, where it here at Jackson or a big track or a little track. They’re always fast,” Schuchart said. “But we were able to get by there in lap traffic. It just seemed like lap cars, when I get up to them, it seemed like they were racing with each other and I was able to get by them at the right time.”
For Pittman, the runner-up finish is a welcomed solid run for he and his Roth Motorsports team, who are building momentum with a top-five at Tri-State Speedway last weekend and now a top-10 and runner-up finish at Jackson Motorplex.
“We just keep working on our car,” Pittman said. “I’m happy with the direction we’re going. Brent, Tony, Steven, they’ve been working their butts off. Not a lot of good results to show for it. Hopefully we’re turning the corner, getting a little bit better and continue to finish up front.”
Schuchart’s Shark Racing teammate Jacob Allen and 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz also had needed runs. Allen won the Last Chance Showdown and then charged from 21st to ninth. Schatz and his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team finished fifth – their first top-five and top-10 in four races.
While the first two legs of the AGCO Jackson Nationals championship marathon is over and Schuchart has a sizable lead, he knows completing the final leg on Saturday and winning his first Nationals title won’t be an easy task with Pittman 22 points back in second and reigning Jackson Nationals champion Sweet 32 points back in third.
“The 49 car (of reigning champion Sweet) is going to be fast tomorrow. Daryn is going to be fast,” Schuchart said. “But I think we have a fast Drydene Performance Products race car.”

RED HOT GRANT GRABS 3RD WIN IN LAST 4 STARTS AT PLYMOUTH

Plymouth, Indiana (June 26, 2020).........Following Friday night's USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory at Plymouth Speedway, we can just about officially classify Justin Grant as "red hot."
No, we're not talking about the massive sunburn the Ione, Calif. driver was sporting following a recent five-hour kayaking adventure, but of his recent run in the sprint car that has witnessed him win three of last four series events in the month of June.
By doing so, Grant became the first driver to win three of four during a stretch of the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car season since he, himself did it toward the end of the 2018 season, when he actually won four in a five-race stretch.
For Grant, this is different, though. This is in the thick of the season, and with even bigger goals in mind as the season progresses, the confidence within Grant is at peak level every time he straps into the TOPP Motorsports/NOS Energy Drink - TOPP Industries - The Bow Foundation/Maxim/Claxton Chevy No. 4.
"The only other time I hit on a run like this was at the end of 2018," Grant recalled. "Then, the year ended. They iced us, then we weren't hot when we went back again. Honestly, I feel right now, not to sound cocky, it really feels like I can go into any racetrack and we're going to win that night. I have momentum and confidence, everything's clicking, I feel great, the car's great, the team's great and it's all really come together."
A standard winter "break" between racing seasons is nearly non-existent each year with thrashing, building and rebuilding the name of the game. But with time on their hands and playing the waiting game during the extended offseason amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Grant had the opportunity to sit down and pencil out his personal goals and what it's going to take to get there.
As a result, Grant revealed he's in the best physical shape of his life and, mentally, he's as quick as he's ever been. With team owner Kevin Birchmeier and crew chief Mark Shambarger, the team is firing on all cylinders at the moment, and lead the standings by 37 exiting Plymouth just six races into the year, all of which the team has finished in the top-five and half of which the team has enjoyed the spoils of victory.
Grant started the race from the pole position, but it was Dave Darland who gained the early lead with a strong start from the outside of the front row, ultimately leading the first two laps of the 30-lap feature. On the third lap, Grant drove his machine to the topside of the third turn, then diamonded off toward the bottom of turn four to blitz underneath Darland for the race lead at the line by a half-car length.
A half-lap later, calamity ensued as Chris Windom and Brady Bacon made contact in turn three - Windom's right front to Bacon's left rear - sending Bacon into a wild series of nose-to-tail flips while Windom slid to a stop. Incredibly, both were able to make repairs and return to action during the red flag period, then restarted from the tail with Windom getting back to 11th and Bacon, with a caved-in tail tank and all, charging back to finish 9th.
On the ensuing restart, Fatheadz Eyewear Fast Qualifier C.J. Leary was the man on the move, ripping around the outside of Darland for the second position, then was right on the back bumper of Grant for the race lead where he'd remain one-two-three car lengths behind for most of the first half of the race.
On lap 13, Grant made, arguably, his defining move of the race, splitting between the cars of Blake Vermillion and Steve Irwin entering the third turn while Leary tried to find the space to fenagle his way back to Grant, but it was to no avail for the time being as Grant cracked open an instant half-straightaway lead.
At the time of the move, Grant recalled hearing somebody in his proximity in arrears. On this night, Grant explained that all his speed was made on entry and it was the momentum that propelled him through the exit. In essence, if you entered the corner slow, you were going to be slow all through the corner, thus allowing a trailing driver a chance to eat up ground in a hurry if he were to enter the corner full steam ahead.
"I didn't know who it was, but I knew the clock was ticking on this deal; we got to get going," Grant exclaimed. "I felt like I could hear somebody. It's funny, when you do this enough, I don't know if you actually hear them or if you just start to get a feeling of how long you've been running slow laps, or what it is, but I felt like there was a right front to my left rear at one point and a little bit of a gap opened up so that a guy could shoot that hole. We blazed on through there and it worked out."
Once clear, the remainder of traffic seemingly fell into place on the bottom while Grant ripped the top, where he was now clipping, stretching his lead to 2.5 seconds by halfway and then to a full straightaway by the time there was 10 to go.
Meanwhile, further back, Tanner Thorson was making in an impressive charge in what was, believe it or not, his first career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car start. With seven laps remaining, the 2016 USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget champion and three-time winner with the series thus far this year, slide jobbed Leary for second in turn one, then proceeded to try to truncate Grant's monstrous lead as Grant navigated a swath of hefty traffic.
For Grant, it was the 19th victory of his USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car career, putting him two behind 1967 series champion Greg Weld for 29th all-time. Grant also became the first driver since Kevin Thomas Jr. in 2013 to win three of the first six USAC National Sprint Car races to begin a season.

Grant was methodical, but was wary of the consequences of impatience in traffic following trouble in last Sunday's unsanctioned Kokomo Speedway Sprint Car feature where he was battling for the lead when ran into the back of a lapped car and turned himself around, giving him pause for his air of invincibility.
"It was a really good reminder since I haven't done that in a while," Grant admitted. "It was a good reminder that, 'hey, you're not invincible.' You've got to pay attention. You can still get flustered. I was starting to think I was pretty unflusterable in lapped traffic. Tonight, I just talked myself through it, took the opportunities as they came and capitalized on them when I had them, but didn't force them, and just tried to pick my way through."
A close encounter came about when Grant scraped his front wheel on the rear bumper of series Rookie Anthony D'Alessio at the start/finish line just beneath the waving of Tom Hansing's white flag. Grant cut the inside in turn one, and from there, it was pretty much clear sailing as Grant closed out his second USAC AMSOIL National Sprint car victory at Plymouth after winning the series debut at the 3/8-mile in 2017.
Thorson was an impressive second-place, 1.191 second behind Grant at the checkered, with Leary, Chase Stockon and Darland rounding out the top-five.

Stockon made history Friday night at Plymouth, becoming the first driver to reach 300 consecutive USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature starts, a remarkable record that has spanned every series race since the beginning of the 2012 season.
